Dear Friends2015 was our strongest year yet! It is definitely a year of gratitude. With the new building in place, consistent wonderful fruit from our growers, our incredible, knowledgeable, friendly hospitality staff and a top notch production team, we have laid out all of our cards to provide you with the very best experience possible. So thank you to all who had a glass, a bottle, time in our tasting room, enjoyed a wine club shipment or attended one of our many events around the country this year. We are humbled to have the very best customer base ever! It so happens that gratitude is the theme of this year’s Pascal’s Corner. He is getting older and more appreciative of the continuation of his Dad’s legacy. He is also very grateful to be a sophomore at UC Santa Cruz where he is studying both Creative Writing and Sustainable Agriculture. With the holidays forthcoming, we created some elegant and affordable gift options featuring our classics as well as some very limited production wines. All gifts include free ground shipping and the DVD American Wine Story. We wish you the warmest of holiday greetings and we hope to see or hear from you soon. In deep gratitude, Janie, Chris and the Brooks Team

Pascal’s Corner I love the winery and the people involved, and have started to see it far beyond the bounds of the normalcy I considered it constrained within before. I am in love with the people. Plenty of times in my life I was very quick to shirk off what other’s said; compliments, praise, little quips repeated to say ‘thank you’ or that I am doing great work. I was happy to see them, happy to talk as I have, but I got tired of the thanks directed towards me. I don’t deserve them, I have the namesake and the INCREDIBLE good fortune to have the father I did and community to be affiliated with, but the praise isn’t mine. I want to make that point, mine is only good fortune. I live my life as everyone else lives theirs, but mine is not the one that is given to Brooks for everything it is now…. I believe the thanks Working in the Biodynamic gardens are owed to Janie and Chris—as well as the rest of the team—the two who have been there from the start, the two that continued through it all. They appear inhuman, in a world all their own; keepers of an intense and incredible secret, of stress owed to work, of production, and continuation…and in all honesty, I don’t know why they continue it. Weaker people…would be quick to run, but not they, or the plenty of others that have entered the business, or the many that came in to help the two, that perhaps started out to remember my father, but stoked the coals far enough to produce a separate entity all it’s own. This is not my world, not my present one. People continue the business because they want to and it is an incredible mark of pride to see it, knowing full well this is not my doing, but an intense debt with want to repay. This business…founded now in a more permanent and tailored place, was not built for me…but was continued because the people who run it did what they wanted to the fullest extent of their being, and made what you enjoy. This was my huge realization for
Proudly holding his dad’s first vintage of Willamette Valley Riesling, 1998. Still a beautiful wine.
this year. People do it for themselves…they do it because it’s an outlet for what they’re good at…. They’re making the wine they want to make. They want to sell the wine they enjoy. I think everyone in the business is honest. No one works for a “thank you,” they work for an industry that seems only to enlist from passionate people, with a clear and present ‘in’ and ‘out’…. It seems an industry that’s good at settling out those that can’t make it, and gives the fix for those that have an obsessive trait in their beings, like that of my father. The industry follows the same cycle year in and year out, knowing…the same and different struggles Making ceviche with friend Tad Seestedt of Ransom Wine and Spirits lead to absolution and the path they have taken for better or worse. It is a business of tailored people, where only the most human manage to survive, where the struggle seems real and demanding, where the finished product is crafted rather than made. For all of those that have made their dreams, sacrificed their lives, ruined sweatshirts…smelled fermented grapes…this is for you, not me. Let’s raise our glasses for that warm cheeked and hidden humility. Cheers— Pascal

Brooks Featured on Fox! Earlier this year, Fox Business Network has launched its first reality show and Brooks is proud to be part of it! How did it come about? In May of 2014, Janie received an email from a researcher at Tower Productions based in Chicago. They had been hired by Fox Business News to produce a documentary series about interesting, unusual or unique inheritances. She had come across our story and was hoping it could be part of the show. After a phone interview, Fox decided the Brooks story fit the description of what they were looking for. Filming took place at the new winery in September 2014, and after fact checking with Janie and making final cuts, the show finally aired on February 3, 2015.
Janie and Strange Inheritance Host, Jamie Colby.
Our episode told the story of Jimi’s life and the legacy he left behind. Pascal, Chris and Janie are interviewed throughout the episode. Clearly the highlight is seeing how poised and mature a then 18-year-old Pascal really is! He truly did receive a Strange Inheritance, and we are so glad he did. Reaching a national audience had quite the impact. Since the show aired, we have had over 1,500 people reach out and ask us where they can find our wine. In addition, we can attribute many online orders, club sign-ups, and visitors directly from Strange Inheritance. Jimi was an incredible person and we are Jamie Colby interviewing Chris. glad that his story is being told. Our winemaker, Chris Williams, and the whole team at Brooks are extremely talented. We will forever be grateful to the teams at Tower Productions and Fox for beautifully and accurately telling our story. American Wine Story A Feature Documentary That Tells The Story of Brooks Three Crows Media, an Oregon based film production company, filmed the documentary American Wine Story. The film shows winemakers ranging from luminaries to newcomers and is an inspiring feature documentary about those who chase their dreams with a bottle in one hand and a corkscrew in the other. They approached Brooks to be featured in the film. After meeting with them and hearing their plans, Janie decided it could be a beautiful tribute to Jimi and a great way to share our story, while blending it with other tales of risk and reinvention for many producers across the country. Pascal, Chris, Janie, and David were all interviewed many times. The crew went up to Oregon to get footage of harvest, bottling and the vineyard. When asked if there were others to interview about our story, we sent them to our extended Oregon wine “family.” They collected photos and videos along with memories, and were immersed in the influence Jimi’s life has had in the Oregon wine world. American Wine Story is available on DVD and Amazon Prime to watch in the comfort of your own home, ideally with friends and a glass of Brooks wine in your hand. American Wine Story will always be a part of our family and our winery. Over TEN years after Jimi’s passing, his story is still being told and influencing others. It’s a remarkable story and this movie gives a good look at just what a remarkable person Jimi Brooks was. For more information on American Wine Story visit the American Wine Story page on the Brooks website. www.brookswine.com/About-Us/American-Wine-Story American Wine Story producer, David Baker, recently published his first book this fall, Vintage, an adventurous tale in the world of wine. It is a great book that will make a great gift this holiday season. Vintage is available in our tasting room.

About Brooks For those who are new to our circle ... and may not know our story: FOUNDED in 1998, Brooks is a reflection of the visionary Portland native, Jimi Brooks. His reverence for the land and vines made him a practitioner of organic and biodynamic farming. The great respect for vineyard individuality and mastery of blending, allowed his wines to achieve the greatest depth, flavors and balance. While Jimi is no longer with us, his dynamic spirit lives on through his wines, family and friends. With the outpouring of generosity and friendship by the Oregon wine community, we are delighted to share that Brooks Wines continues and is stronger than ever. Jimi’s son Pascal, who was the ultimate source of his passion for life, is the sole owner of the winery (at age 19, he’s the youngest winery owner in the world) and sister Janie Brooks Heuck has remarkably volunteered to lead it. Since 2005, Chris Williams, who learned how to make wine from Jimi, has continued the winemaking practices consistent with Jimi’s philosophy: hand crafting terroir-driven Pinot Noir and Riesling.
