Life’ s Reflections eflections
On Sunday, December 12, 2021, Lela Thompson Garrett passed away peacefully at the age of 84. She was a loving sister and aunt (Tee Tee) and a loving friend, mentor, and teacher to many.
On January 15, 1937, Lela was born in Gulfport, MS, to Ms. Luella Brown (Barnes) and Sidney Thompson. She graduated from 33rd High School, Gulfport, MS, received a bachelor’s degree in education from Rust College, Holly Springs, MS, and a master’s degree in education from Arkansas State University, Jonesboro, AR. Lela taught in the Memphis City School System for many years and continued to befriend, mentor, and teach and demonstrate life lessons to many of her prior students long after she retired from teaching. She was highly active in church and served tirelessly as a Sunday school teacher, prayer warrior, and spiritual leader to so many and was often sought out as a speechwriter, guest speaker, and guest teacher at churches all over Memphis. Lela loved gardening, keeping her yard immaculate, and always painted her own house until she was physically unable to do so. Lela was preceded in death by her father and mother and is survived by her sister Ethel Maston, niece Tonia Williams, nephew Eric Guyot and his wife Gail (Lela’s primary caregiver), and several grand nieces and nephews. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
