Legend In The Park: Spandau Ballet Last year’s Legend in the Park event saw the formidable Sir Tom Jones wow the audience at Howard Davis Park and this year, the Legend in the Park event is set to really shine; gold! Spandau Ballet are one of Britain’s great iconic bands having sold over 25 million records, scored numerous multi-platinum albums and amassed 23 hit singles, since their humble beginnings as a group of friends with dreams of stardom in the late 1970s. It wasn’t long before they became fully-fledged members of the Blitz Club scene and established themselves as one of the super-groups of the 80s.
Returning to touring for the first time since their 2009 Reformation tour which saw the band finally reunited, after some two decades, they are once again the hottest band in the UK and Jersey will be welcoming them on Saturday 4th July to perform in the beautiful, unique setting of Howard Davis Park. Back in 2009, Spandau Ballet tickets for London’s O2 Arena sold out in just 20 minutes! The six year gap since then, has meant that the eagerly anticipated return of the UKs pioneering New Romantics band means added dates and sell out shows across Britain starting this Spring.
With the recent release of ‘The Story, The Very Best of Spandau Ballet’ featuring all of the greatest hits plus three new songs produced by legendary record producer Trevor Horn including the radio smash ‘This Is The Love’ and the forthcoming single ‘Steal’ the band will be bringing all of those mega hits to life at Legend in the Park. We are certain that it will be a night to remember! For more information go to The Big Gig’s new website or check out their Facebook page. www.biggigjersey.com
Les Quennevais Students Win Competition For ‘Extraordinary’ Work A musical instrument made from driftwood and scallop shells, a poem comparing education to a trip to Mars and an anti-pollution beach geology project have won top prize for Les Quennevais students in an international competition designed to showcase ‘extraordinary work’ by schools.
7 students who had just started at Les Quennevais, beat competition from schools around the world, including the US and Australia as well as exceptional schools in the UK.
Seven projects were entered by teacher Peter Jones, who is head of Key Stage 3, into a competition organised by the Innovation Unit, The winning projects, some by Year an internationally-renowned inde-

Work To Start On New Hospital Theatres Island Games Sports Teams Supported By Waitrose Initiative Islanders in Jersey can support their local sports teams due to compete in the 2015 NatWest Island Games through Waitrose’s Community Matters scheme.
Every month each Waitrose shop donates £1000 to three local good causes. Customers vote for the share each charity or project receives using green tokens. Throughout March all three branches will have a different sport represented in one of the boxes. The value of the tokens in each box will decide their share.
Duncan Langston, manager of Waitrose St Saviour, said: “Waitrose is hugely supportive of the NatWest Island Games and this is a fantastic opportunity to help provide for our local teams who will be competing in what hopes to be the biggest Island Games yet. “The green token scheme is an excellent way for our customers to choose how they want us to contribute to the local community so we ask everyone to support local sport with their green token.”
A project to construct two new temporary theatres at Jersey General Hospital will start this month. This follows the appointment of a local contractor by Jersey Property Holdings, who will oversee the project on behalf of the Health and Social Services Department. This first phase of the project is scheduled to be completed in early 2016. A second phase of work, which will refurbish the current four theatres and increase capacity to six theatres overall, including the Maternity Theatre, will begin later in 2016. The development follows the issuing of a planning permit to provide temporary facilities for a period of up to ten years until the anticipated major project for a new hospital facility is realised. The new facility, containing two operating theatres, will be sited in the Gloucester Street car park and attached to the hospital's main theatre suite, enabling the existing theatres to be refurbished.

Motorists Asked To Look Out For Agile Frogs Motorists are being urged to look out for agile frogs on the roads, particularly in the Ouaisne area, over the next few weeks and while the roads are wet.
Outstanding Success For Liberation Group The Liberation Group is raising a celebratory glass to its brewery team after enjoying outstanding success at this year’s International Brewing Awards. The frogs migrate to their breeding ponds at this time of year and one of the biggest concerns is that the female frogs will be run over before they make it to the ponds. Let’s Keep Jersey Clean I’d like to think that this summer something will be done to stop people leaving their rubbish behind after they’ve been to the beach. The beach at West Mount is terrible during the Summer with pieces of broken glass, rubbish bags and empty cans covering the slabs. This is a favourite spot for families with young children and dog walkers so shouldn’t be left messy and unsafe. #JustSayin’
Less for cash! A 20p increase in fare if you are paying cash?!? If you have an Avanchi card the fare is reducing, of course with the exception of some journeys where it will also increase. Are you confused yet? Since when were cash payers penalised so? And on that note when did Cash payment over card become a currency exchange at such high rates? #JustSayin’

REASONS 4G Is On Its Way! www.jerseypages.info
Electronic Music & Arts Festival Continued from page 1...
“The plan is to make this a yearly event, with a view to attracting tourism from the UK and further afield, by booking a combination of Internationally renowned & local artists and showcasing the beauty of the park and the outlying areas. Whilst the advantages to Jersey’s economy and cultural significance of hosting another event of this nature are obvious, as with any event in a public space, it is clear that there may be an impact on nearby residents. As party of the event planning and sign off process we have implemented rigorous controls, to minimise the effects of noise pollution, traffic congestion and public disturbance. We have worked alongside the Bailiff advisory panel, as well as the Parish of St Lawrence, to ensure that any impact is minimised and dealt with correctly. There are very
specific guidelines surrounding noise levels, security and waste management, all of which will be closely adhered. Part of our planning process includes engaging a firm of UK consultants, Ground Control Uk Ltd, with a huge amount of experience of organising events of this nature, in sensitive areas throughout the UK and Europe. Please visit their website www.groundcontrol.co.uk to gain an understanding of their past projects and see some of the awards they have won over the past few years. Whilst we are confident that adequate measures have been put in place to ensure this is an event that can be enjoyed by many, we welcome the input of local residents. We look forward to seeing many of you on July 11.” Ben Newman Festival Director
ALFIE BUOY The art of luxury
You will probably have heard people talking about 4G: basically, it’s a phone network that’s faster than 3G and is mostly used for data. Mobile data is used to download apps, browse the web, stream TV and movies and more. It's sometimes called LTE, which stands for Long Term Evolution. Sure is building a brand new 4G network on the island, and is replacing the existing 2G and 3G networks too. 3G networks mean you can use the internet quickly and easily where connection speeds allow. 2G is slower, so it isn't as good for going online...but it's fine for calls and texts.
While this major project is under way, you may experience some occasional disruption to the Sure network as engineers have to turn sites off to install new equipment; but will we promise it will be worth it...your service will be better and faster! What do I need to get 4G? You will need a compatible 4G phone – many smartphones are now 4G ready and you will see “4G ready” labels appearing in stores and online soon. Sure will be introducing new plans

for 4G and we will announce those a little nearer to launch. You will want to think about handsets too: it is important to be aware that some manufacturers (Apple, Samsung and LG) require mobile networks to be approved by them before they will release software that enables their phones to access 4G networks. This combination of network testing by the manufacturer, and the requirement for new manufacturer software, means that we cannot say when some phones will be able to access 4G. What we can be sure of is that all of our customers will see a significant improvement in 3G as soon as the new network goes live so, no matter which smartphone you have, things are going to get better!
to agree the process and timing for this launch. Excellent progress has been made and we expect that we will be able to complete the work by Easter at the latest. Sites will be upgraded and switched on area by area and we will keep you informed as we progress. We will regularly publish the details of the scheduled engineering works when we start, and which areas of the island may be affected, on our Sure Jersey Facebook page and on our website.
When is 4G launching? The regulator, CIRCA, has announced that Sure's application for a 4G licence in Jersey has been successful and we are now working closely together with the telecoms regulator Sunset Cruises are available with unlimited champagne and a delicious selection of canapes for up to 13 people and costs £1300. Half day charter (4 hrs) at a cost of £2000 or full day (8 hrs) at a cost of £4000 are also available. These packages give you complete freedom of the boat, you can even pick the destination. Many clients choose to go for a BBQ at Les Minquiers or just to anchor in St.Brelades bay for a day of watersports, which we provide free of charge, or to simply relax. Over night stays are also possible as well as special packages for hen parties, stag do’s and birthdays. This is a bespoke service so please do not hesitate to contact us by email admin@alfiebuoy.com or call 07797742111 with any queries or requests. www.alfiebuoy.com

A Step-By-Step Guide To Buying Property By Indigo Estates Buying property can be a complicated process. This step-by-step guide has been designed to walk you through the process of buying property.
ligations for yourself or the seller until contracts are signed (please note: whilst making an offer on share transfer properties, this can become a legal binding contract)
Step1 - Arrange your finance Step 5 - Offer accepted! Before you begin your property search, it is advisable to arrange an appointment with your bank or with a mortgage broker to arrange your finances and, if possible have a mortgage agreed in principle. This will confirm how much money you will have to fund the purchase, which will ultimately influence your property search. Step 2 - Register your interest The first step to finding the right property is to register with us either by calling us on 639955 or by visiting us at our offices in Hill Street where you can discuss your property requirements with one of our experienced property negotiators. If you are pushed for time you can register your interest with us online. Step 3 - Find the right property Once we have a clear understanding of your requirements you will receive a selection of properties that match your criteria. We can also keep you constantly up-to-date via email and/or SMS alerts when the latest properties become available. Once you have shortlisted the properties that you would like to view, call us or email us and we will endeavour to arrange a viewing at a time that suits you. If you have difficulty in getting yourself to any viewings, please let us know and we will, when we can, come and collect you! Step 4 - Make an offer Once you have identified a suitable property we will put your offer forward to the seller both verbally and in writing stating any special conditions of the offer. You may need to demonstrate, if requested, that you are able to proceed (e.g. provide evidence of your mortgage agreed in principle). There are no legal ob-
Once your offer is accepted we will commence with the following: • Write to both parties to confirm the agreed price and proposed completion date. •Ask you to confirm your lawyers and mortgage providers details (see Step 6). •Ask to see a copy of your registration card and a copy of your identification •Write to both parties lawyers advising them of the agreed sale and to give them all the information they need to commence with the sales process. Step 6 - Instruct a Lawyer The successful purchase of a property can be reliant on the instruction of an efficient and experienced lawyer. It is a good idea to use an experienced lawyer and one who specialises in conveyancing. You can now obtain a quote from lawyers on their fees for the purchase of your home, however from experience we recommend that the cheapest quote is not always the best quote, it is advisable to choose a law firm with a sound and proved reputation.
As part of the conveyancing process your lawyers will do the following: •Raise any enquiries on receipt of the draft contract from the seller's lawyers •Request their own searches •Agree on a date for exchange of contracts We will assist your lawyers and negotiate throughout the process, keeping you informed every step of the way. Step 7 - Survey Once you have advised your mortgage lenders that your offer has been accepted a survey of the property will be booked by a surveyor on behalf of the mortgage lender to identify any structural problems and advise on the property's value. There are different levels of survey reports, your lenders will discuss these options with you as they can vary in cost. Step 8 - Completion Completion for Freehold and flying freehold property in Jersey is taken place in the Royal Court on a Friday afternoon, Share transfer properties can complete any working day as contracts are signed in lawyers offices. We will release the keys of your new property to your Lawyers once completion has taken place. Congratulations, you are now the legal owner of your new home!

Consultation: Civil Penalties The Jersey Financial Services Commission (JFSC) has issued a Consultation Paper setting out the principles it will apply and the decision-making processes it will follow under the new civil financial penalties regime.
This new regime will give the JFSC the power to impose civil financial penalties on regulated businesses that seriously contravene regulatory requirements set by the JFSC in Codes of Practice. The consultation sets out the principles that the JFSC will apply when determining whether to impose a financial penalty and, if so, in what amount. The principles will require the JFSC to consider, amongst other things, how serious the alleged contravention was, what aggravating or mitigating actions had been taken by the regulated business, and the
ability of the regulated business to bear a financial penalty. The consultation also sets out the processes that the JFSC will follow when a regulated business is accused of having seriously contravened a Code of Practice and, as a result, the JFSC is considering the imposition of a financial penalty as the most appropriate regulatory sanction. The processes are designed to ensure that the regulated business is given a proper opportunity to see the evidence against it and to make representations to the JFSC, and for those representations to be considered fully and fairly. The Consultation Paper can be viewed on the JFSC’s website. Hard copies of the Consultation Paper are available upon request. Responses to the consultation are requested by Monday 16 March 2015

Baker & Partners’ William Business News Redgrave Receives Prestigious RBC Wealth Management ACTAPS Membership Recognised For Private Baker & Partners are happy to announce Jersey Advocate and English Barrister William Redgrave’s acceptance into membership of ACTAPS (Association of Contentious Trusts and Probate Specialists). ACTAPS is well respected amongst Contentious Trusts practitioners and has strict criteria for membership, with additional requirements for barristers. William had to demonstrate extensive relevant experience in breach of trust claims and dispute resolution in relation to trusts.
Before moving to Jersey in 2008, William practised at the English Bar for 13 years. He was appointed as a Crown Advocate in 2012. William has appeared in many notable recent civil decisions in Jersey. He appeared for the successful plaintiff in a recent case in which an overseas judgment debtor denied for two years that he was beneficially interested in assets held within a complex structure headed by a Jersey foundation. The case concluded with a capitulation by the defendant.
Stephen Baker, Senior Partner at Baker & Partners, commented: “William is an outstanding barrister and advocate, and the recent confirmation of his membership of ACTAPS, particularly given the additional stringencies for barristers, is testament to this.” William Redgrave added: “I’m delighted to have received confirmation of my membership of ACTAPS and look forward to the continuing development of my Jersey legal career.”

The Importance of Networking by Claire Boscq-Scott #TheBQB
“It’s about connecting with people and building relationships. It’s about building your tribe.”
Build Your Tribe When I first set up my business, six years ago, I went to a speed networking event organised by Jersey Enterprise at the Hotel de France. The place was packed and it was great to connect with so many people in such a short time. After this, I decided that networking was going to be the key to marketing my business and myself; I attended every event I possibly could. Jersey was the perfect place for networking; you could be at one event for breakfast, a second or lunch and third for dinner all in a single day.
or recommendation, and count on those people for their generosity. In your tribe you will need connectors, mentors, company and industry experts and peers.
But what is networking? Is it about making a sales pitch or collecting the most business cards in the room? No, networking is about people; it’s about connecting with people and building relationships. Networking is about building your tribe. What I mean by tribe are the people in your network of contacts that you can go to for a favour, such as a referral
I believe that “givers” will “gain” for their efforts in many different ways. The person you help may connect you with someone who can help you or plug you into an opportunity that is just right for you and your businesses. Your generous act will enable someone else to be generous and, in turn,
Have you heard about “givers gain?” It’s the principle that when people help others, they gain more out of the experience than the person they are helping. It’s based on the notion that generosity breeds generosity. People who are generous attract people who are also generous.
enables someone else to be generous. By acting generously you will establish a reputation as being someone who helps other people. People who are generous attract people who are also generous. These people are willing to share their network, their knowledge and their business, which can develop into new opportunities for you. You will feel awesome; nothing feels better than knowing you made a major impact on someone’s career, business or life. Before going to a networking event, you have to be ready; you must have a good understanding of what you wish to get out of the event and how you are going to go about achieving this. Use your network to help you develop strategic relationships. If you believe

you are really bad at marketing, hate to sell yourself and your services, prepare yourself adequately. Being good at what you do is simply not enough; you must be able to talk about yourself and what it is you do in a compelling way. A couple of years ago I attended an engaging presentation by inspirational speaker Paul Dunn who mentioned Simon Sinek in his speech. Sinek is the author of the book called “Start With Why” and for me it was a revelation. I loved the simplest, but most powerful model for inspirational leadership, which all started with “The Golden Circle” of human motivation. It is based on the principle that the most effective leaders know the recipe for success is “why” you do what you do, “how” you do it and finally “what” you actually do. Sounds simple, but what Sinek found is that most companies do their marketing backwards. They start with their "what" and then move to the "how" of what they do. Many of these companies neglect to even mention “why” they do “what” they do. Even more alarmingly, many of them don't even know “why” they do ”what” they do. One thing is for certain people will do business with those in their tribe; the people they trust. If nothing else, make sure you use networking to connect, develop relationships and build a strong tribe around you. www.thebusyqueenbee.com

Spotlight Interview With... ...Tupper Loan Co Who and what is Tupper Loan Co? Tupper Loan Company (TLC) is a recently set up company consisting of two local individuals (David Tupper & Steve Moore) with over 45 years combined lending experience in Jersey. We believe that we are worth talking to about virtually any type of finance/loan including Marine, Vehicle, Office financing, property, plant, and Invoice financing that may be required locally. ‘TLC’ aims to give honest, independent, accurate, straight forward but tailored advice as well as sourcing any finance/loan required at competitive rates and terms. Our office is small but has a big heart with a great coffee machine overlooking the Marina with nearby parking available. Why did you decide to start TLC? (David) I thought I had retired from lending a couple of years ago, however I seemed to still enjoy advising and meeting up with long standing customers in coffee bars. In short I realised I was missing the industry and its customers so I set up the company. I did not initially actively seek out business until Steve Moore approached me with a view to setting up an office and providing a more professional and integrated service, but still without the need to wear a suit!
How does TLC differ from other loan companies? What are your USP’s? I believe we differ from most other companies with the range of loan products we have access to, the overall breadth of knowledge, the uniquely flexible solutions we can offer and the general customer care (I am not just referring to the fine fresh coffee available). Where do you see the company in 5 years? In five years time we would aim to be a slightly larger company (perhaps five staff ) but still maintaining the personal touch. This increase in size would, I believe, enable us to introduce new sources of competitive lending and different products not currently available on the Island. What advice would you give to somebody setting up in business? When you start a company you need to be aware that whilst you may know your trade/ industry well there are invariably many other considerations to take into account which may require outside advice but will undoubtedly cost money. For example office fit out (carpets/broadband/furniture/electricity/cabling etc), computer software/hardware, company set up costs, local employment legislation
requirements, other legislative requirements (Data protection etc), advertising, marketing etc. All this also requires your time and can irritatingly divert you from what you are best at, however in this day and age it is essential that you get to grips with these issues. On the plus side I am now almost useful with DIY around the house, for example, my wife was very pleased with the way I put up the Xmas tree (which I also personally cut down) last year!

The Truth About Recruitment: Part Two By Marie-Clara Thaureux
jobs are unadvertised; you won’t find them on LinkedIn, in the JEP on a job board or on the page adjacent to this article. The recruiter is the gatekeeper for the client’s vacancies, if you want the client (any client in fact) to see your CV go through the recruiter, this is the best advice I can give alongside going through the right recruiter. Every recruiter will occasionally advertise positions, if you are worried that the advertised vacancy you are interested in is a phishing expedition then before you send in your CV call the recruiter, they will be more than happy to discuss the vacancy in detail with you (if you are advised just to forward your CV and wait to hear, don’t bother).
“60% of all jobs are unadvertised; you won’t find them on LinkedIn, in the JEP or on a job board” A while back I wrote a post entitled ‘The Truth about Recruitment and how it can work for you’. The article examined how to select a recruitment consultant, it laid bare once and for all who the consultant is working for and I didn’t mince my words when explaining the types of candidates I will (and wont) work with. Little under a year has passed since I wrote the above, following a long reflection and an interesting business year I am back to re-visit the subject in a little more depth. Anyone interested in reading the first article can find it on www.issuu.com/jerseypages RECRUITMENT IS DYSFUNCTIONAL AT BEST Anyone who types ‘Recruitment Truth’ into google will come across a multitude of articles, some are good, and some cause me physical and mental pain to read. It is no secret that the recruitment industry is tainted,
“It is no secret the recruitment industry is tainted”
the basic model of re-active, match-making recruitment is dysfunctional at best, I am not trying to do myself out of a career but I pride myself on honesty and an industry that has become so commercialised, that anyone can be a part of it, is the very same one I love and protect, I despise the scatter gun approach that is slowly killing our industry. So here is some advice on the do’s and don’ts and the good vs the bad. GOOD CONSULTANT Vs BAD CONSULTANT There are many reasons that recruitment has a bad name, inexperienced consultants, lack of industry knowledge, laziness, arrogance we have all met one! The truth is we now live in a digital age where anyone who has had a less than satisfactory experience with a consultant can throw it onto the Internet for the world to see regardless of whether the consultant was genuinely at fault. Recently a graduate applied for a Director Level position, I did not submit their CV to my client for what should be obvious reasons. I did call the candidate, explain, offer some assistance in the research stage to identify suitable level positions and hopefully helped the candidate. There was no gain on my part here, but, I did it anyway because I cared enough to and the truth is that is the main difference between a good and a bad consultant. Communication!
because the consultant has an exclusive candidate to work on (by the way, this applies to clients and jobs too!). WE’RE BACK TO GOOD VS BAD AND IT’S ALL ABOUT CHEMISTRY! My final piece of advice is on how to choose a recruiter, and you do need to choose, one, two at the most. Don’t randomly pick a name from the 1st page of google, do your research, look up recruiter profiles on LinkedIn, it’s a working copy of our CV, recommendations, endorsements and a live testimonial to our experience, education and network. (My link is below by the way!) Then meet with a few to establish who you would like to work with and which recruiters would like to work with you.
After all, like any relationship it comes down to Chemistry, Honesty and Trust. HELPING US TO HELP YOU.... There are still many good recruiters out there, experienced, caring and passionate uk.linkedin.com/in/MCThaureux but if you are not honest with us we cannot help you. The internet holds a host of articles that advise candidates to withhold information from consultants, withholding or exaggerating employment details, references or refusing to tell us where you ‘ve interviewed makes it impossible to work with you. Honesty is important; it is the first step to trust and the first building block of a productive relationship.
IT’S A RAT RACE… I’ve met a fair few people in my time in recruitment and there are always some that think it’s clever to register with every agency (by the way that’s some 20 odd just in Jersey) and incite some competition, it’s not, it only ever results in one of two things a) A rat race – who can get there IF YOU ARE TOLD TO FORWARD first or B) Nothing YOUR CV, JUST DON’T…. Remember, research suggests that 60% of all
