West Orange Warriors Ready For “War” This Season
Page 2 Florida Sporting News •8/25/18 - 9/7/18
Dr. Phillips High School/Edgewater High School I have had the privilege to watch several Dr. Phillips practices with my father. He told me that if I wanted to really learn how the game of football is played, watch these guys! My father taught me that football is like a game of chess. Only you get to knock down your opponent every chance you can. It’s a game of inches and intense strategy. Head football Rodney Wells (8th year, 80-14), knows how to play the game. Before we traveled to Kissimmee to watch the Kickoff Classic between Osceola and Dr. Phillips, I told my father that Dr. Phillips was going to win. My father turned to me, smiled and said, “I guarantee Coach Wells will not show any of his good stuff. He’ll keep his starters on the bench for as long as he can. This game does not count.” I thought my father had lost it. Then again, he’s been around football all his life. Huh, maybe he knew something I didn’t. He was right! DP Football hosted Osceola at the new Austin Tindall Stadium in Kissimmee and while the Kowboys dealt the Panthers a 21-3 defeat, the experience highlighted some positives to build on and areas that will need to improve as the season progresses. DP’s defense will certainly be formidable and the starting unit that played in the first half proved just as much, limiting the Kowboys to just seven points, courtesy of a Kowboys’ scoring drive that began at the DP 20. Offensively, DP drove into the Osceola red zone several times throughout the contest but a 32-yard first quarter field goal by junior Riley Stephens was all they had to show for it as an experienced Osceola defense stifled the Panthers at opportune times, including twice inside the ten yard line. Individually, senior captain Jaquarri Powell recovered two fumbles and collected three tackles in just over two quarters of work while junior linebacker Stephen Dix racked up seven tackles in the same span. While the offense struggled to find its rhythm, the Panthers saw seven receivers catch at least one pass with senior Devon Buckhanon and junior Jacquez Jones leading the way with three apiece. Junior Nivon Holland led the return game with two kickoff returns for 42 yards. Dr. Phillips has several Game-changers in CB Bryan Bell-Anderson (Sr., 5-10, 175); WR Devon Buckhanon (Sr., 6-3, 180); ATH Jaquarri Powell (Sr. 5-9, 200); ATH Japerri Powell (Sr., 5-9, 190); LB Cameron Williams (Sr., 5-10, 215). Edgewater High - Coach: Cameron Duke (2nd year, 9-3). ORLANDO – The Proud Edgewater Eagles will be soaring on the field with several team leaders like QB R.J. Harvey, DE Nate White, S Jahsimeon Campblin, DB Malik Prioleau, and RB Isaiah Connelly that are returning to continue to prove that the Eagles are triumphant. Eight starters returning to the offensive line are QB RJ Harvey, HB Rashad Bouie, RB Isaiah Connelly, LT David Anderton, LG Jalen Early, C Devin Hevener, RG James Brown and WR Coby Stribling. Seven starters returning to the defensive line are DE Nate White, LB DJ Hampton, LB Hudson Driggers, and DB Sharry Jefferson, Kyan Graham, Malik Prioleau, alongside S Jahsimeon Campblin. Amongst the starters, be on the lookout for top new comers like WR Tommi Hill who is a sophomore from Evans, S Eric Doctor who is a junior from Evans and LB Kenneth Brown, sophomore, also from Evans. Other key returners to the ball are DE Antwun Gordon, who is a senior this year; Daniel Green, junior, who plays O-line and D-line and senior athlete Abdul Harmon. Remember, the squad went winless in 2016 to claiming a district title under Head Coach Cameron Duke in his first season. Coach Duke has such a contagious energy that the team gravitates to and produces on the field as well as in the classroom. With high energy music blasting from the sound system, position coaches going over drills and Head Coach Duke running everywhere on the field correcting while encouraging the players to trust the process and believe in each other, makes this coming season one to remember. Their season kick off game is the classic Battle of College Park game against Bishop Moore on August 24th at 7 pm. Coach Duke has great confidence in his staff and players that they will execute and dominant this season.

Apopka Football: Once Again in the Hunt for the BEST TEAM IN ORANGE COUNTY By: Micheal Attardi What can a sports writer say about a program that lives by the motto, “Sixty brothers. One mission. One heartbeat.” That is Apopka Football and how Coach Darlington roles with his team. Darlington is a man of a few words, but when he speaks about football, he lights up like one of his players on a big Friday night lights game. I’ve been around many coaches during my amateur and professional career as a player. I find it exciting to discover a coach who still has a passion for the game during his 17th year as a head coach. Darlington is the ͞real deal.͟Just the other day, I went over to see the team practice. The session started with a team building skill that only true football players would understand. We used to call it the ͞trench games.͟ You line up two players opposite with the same height and weight and both need to control the other as they explode off the line. Teammates are cheering and egos are put back in place depending on your outcome. Not one player complained nor let down until the whistle blew, a true testament of respect that his players are accustomed to. The Apopka Blue Darters once again, will be the team that everyone wants and needs to beat for State playoff points. Imagine being a dart board and every team in Orange County are throwing darts at you. It’s a tough place to start, but Darlington shows a 15943 record and continues his winning tradition. Some of the Blue Darters who will keep their successful program moving forward are OL Jake Caughell (Sr., 6-0, 240); RB Cornelius Williams (Sr., 5-8, 161); DT Curtis Williams (Sr., 5-11, 250); RB Jecoryan Davis-Hamilton (Jr., 6-2, 170); TE/DT Jalen Carter (Jr., 6-4, 260) and junior QB/RB Jackson Darlington. A deep junior class is expected to build on experience of region semifinal season in 2017 as eight starters return on offense, including QB/RB Jackson Darlington (Jr., 6-0, 195). ... RB/WR Eric Wright (Soph., 5-8, 150). These two are playmakers with breakout potential. As I left that practice field, I realized that I too, love this game after thirty long years later.
West Orange High School Ready for “War” this Season ORLANDO - West Orange are a team who truly need no introduction. From their offense to their defense, the Warriors have shown that they are a team who plays to win every time they step onto the field. Last year, the Warriors went (7-4), ending a good season on a decent note. This year, they will strive for more. They have several key returners and will of course be joined by Head Coach Bob Head once again, who has proved vital at the role for the Warriors. With last season’s departing senior class gone, including then senior kicker Andrew Brickweg, it will be on the younger players to step up and fill the shoes of the upperclassmen they looked up to last season. Having won the first game of the season against neighbor and rival Windermere High, they will no doubt be looking to the next round of Friday Night lights to start their official season with a win.

Ocoee’s New Head Football Coach is Ready for the Challenge By: Zackary Everidge OCOEE - The Gold and Black Ocoee Knights return this year with a new Coach named Aaron Sheppard. Sheppard is the fourth coach in five years for the Ocoee Knights, who return seven starters on offense to a team that will rely on overall team speed to turn things around. Hopefully this year, The Ocoee Knights can turn around the hardship they had faced last year by using their new coach Sheppard’s leadership. In 2017, the Knights went 1-3 for home games, 0-2 for away games, and 0-4 for neutral games. Ocoee’s expectations this year are to do better than the previous 3 coaches’ seasons. The Knights kickoff game this season will be against the Apopka Blue Darters on August 24thatApopka High School. This will be one of their toughest opponents this season. Their second game will be on Aug. 31st against the Olympia Titans. Olympia is also a tough team and will give Ocoee a great game. Some key players who will help the Knights throughout the season are Senior Offensive and Defensive Tackle Matt Hogan (6-5, 295); Senior Wide Receiver and Defensive Back Jeremiah Fails (5-11, 180); Senior Wide Receiver and Defensive Back Kendall Bohler (5-11, 155); Senior Defensive End and Outside Line Backer Chester Geffrard who is 6-4 and 220 pound. Junior Wide Receiver and Defensive back Lovie Jenkins, who is 6-1 and 180 pounds. In total Ocoee has quite many returning starter players.Another very important player, Junior Defensive Back and Wide Receiver Dexter Rentz, standing at 5-11, 170 pounds, tied a state record with five interceptions in one game in 2017. According to Ocoee’s 2017 stats, their toughest team this season will be East Ridge High School because they were the most unforgiving team last season.
A Rebuilding Year is Just What the Ducks Ordered! By: Mikey Attardi Orlando - The Corner Stone Charter Ducks are ready to compete this season. It has been a rebuilding year for this well-disciplined team. The school is constantly trying to recruit within their own school. The Ducks did a great job off season to increase their team numbers from only 20 years last season to 35 players this year. Coach Jim Pusateri is the reason why this football program is turning around for the positive. One of the hurdles is that coach only has 5 starters returning from last season. This means that 30 new players need to learn a system, as if they never played football before. This could be their biggest hurdle entering this season. The good news, is that Coach Pusateri and his staff are friendly and patient. A much needed combination if you want to encourage new players to engage. The 5 returning game changers are RB/LB Angel De La Rosa (Sr., 5-10, 185); DE/FB Jacob Rabaja (Sr., 6-2, 195); DL Richard Carosone (Sr., 5-10, 240); TE/DL Jayden Valentine (Sr., 6-3, 240), WR/ DB Richard Movida (Sr., 5-11, 185). RB Angel De La Rosa; FB Jacob Rabaja; TE Jayden Valentine will be leading the offense while returning defensive starters, DE Jacob Rabaja; DL Richard Carosone will rally the new defensive assault. Other key returners are LB Ian Tirado-Montes (Fr., 6-1; 190); WR Skyler Persaud (Sr., 5-10; 165) DB Casey Rashko (Jr., 5-8, 160); OL Yesh Patel (Jr., 6-2, 235); C Gavin Melton (Sr., 6-0, 180); QB/DB Nicolas Stutchman (Soph., 6-0, 165). Top newcomer players to watch are OL Isaiah Beato (Jr.); OL Houston Humphrey (Soph.); OL Jackson Maldonado (Jr.); DL Justin Russell (Sr.); QB/ LB Dominic Lobozzo (Sr.); WR/ DB Richard Movida (Sr.); DB Zach Saint-Fleur (Jr.); WR Noah WINTER GARDEN Washick (Sr.); LB Lance Sanantenio (Soph.). We all know that 3310 Daniels Rd last season was hard for Corner Stone to endure. This year shows Winter Garden, FL a lot of hope and desire to win. We expect the Ducks to fly into victory this season.

Wekiva is our Number One Pick for a Reason By: Micheal Attardi
Wekiva - Most people who watch high school football think that winning teams are built overnight. The Wekiva football team has been in the making for the past 3 years. That is when Coach Rich Bedesem joined the school as the head football coach. Coach Bedesem, like West Orange Coach, Bob Head, Apopka Coach, Rick Darlington and Rodney Wells from Dr. Phillips all have something in common. These winning coaches work directly with their Pop Warner programs and help build tradition and pride within their own communities. This is why, Wakiva is the team to beat this season. It’s not because of luck. It’s not because of recruiting. It’s all because of the strong football staff that Wwkiva has on and off the football field that has inspired their players to achieve to the highest level. Are they talented? No doubt about it! Are they ready? More ready than most of their opponents. If this team stays focused and stops reading what the media is saying about them, they will be a championship team. If they get stuck reading those number one headlines and not deliver on the field, we will see another team that could have been the best. FSN and other major publications have picked them to be number one. The pressure of being the best team in Orange County should not effect this well disciplined team. The Game-changers are LB Rian Davis (Sr., 6-4, 225); DT Tyler Davis (Sr., 6-2, 290); CB Renardo Green (Sr., 6-1, 185); DB Brandon Hill (Sr., 6-0, 205); DE Norell Pollard (Sr., 6-4, 275). Returning offensive starters are OL Zyire Willett (Sr., 6-2, 320); OL JaJuan Gordon (Sr., 6-0, 290); RB Solomon Edgerton (Sr., 5-9, 200); WR Terrence Moore (Sr., 5-10, 180); TE/WR Jalen Williams (Jr., 6-7, 200); FB Steven Pierre (Sr., 5-9, 225). Returning defensive starters are DT Tyler Davis;DE Norell Pollard; DE Erion Lowe (Sr., 6-2, 235); CB Renardo Green; S Brandon Hill; DT Trevor Barfield (6-4, 225). Top newcomers are LB Rian Davis (from Clear Lake, Texas); LB James Lynch Jr. (Sr., 6-3, 235; from Olympia); S Malik Dixon (Sr., 6-2, 190; from Lake Highland); LB Teddy Adkins (Sr., 6-3, 185; from Ocoee); WR Malik Tolbert (Sr., 6-4, 180; from Winter Park); OT Gunter Williams (Soph., 6-5, 290). This is a team stocked with seniors, including 10 starters on defense. Many of them have college offers from major programs, including LB James Lynch Jr. (Sr., 6-3, 235). ... Malik Tolbert (Sr., 6-4, 180) and Terrence Moore (Sr., 5-10, 180) are key weapons in the passing game. If Wekiva is not the top seed in off run, we will be shocked. They have one of the toughest schedules in the state.
First Academy Football: Specialty Positions Will Lead the Royals to Victory this Season By: Mikey Attardi
Orlando -Last year the First Academy Royals achieved many goals, as well as making it all the way to the State playoffs. Although they have a young team, they are looking to be very competitive this season due to their strong offense. The Royals have been known for their speed and endurance. Coach Kinard always seems to attract top talents and this year is no different. They will be looking for their upperclassman to lead the charge this season. One of the key returning players is RB Rolous Frazier III (Sr., 5-8, 175). Frazier is back after leading the team with 1,039 yards and 18 TDs. Not bad for a junior. We are expecting Frazier to surpass 1,000 yards this season once again. Joining him out of the backfield is Owen Pifer (Sr., 5-10, 175) who ran 553 yards. Pifer is also a running threat and will be a huge force on the offense. Other game changers are DB Nate Edwards (Sr., 6-1, 175), Lake Ellis (Jr. 5-11, 165), QB Matt Edwards (Sr., 6-1, 180) OT/DT Robert Smith (Jr., 6-3, 305). In all there are 5 returning offense and 5 returning defense team members. As we know, there are not too many returning players from last season and Coach Kinard confirmed that. ͞I have a young new team this season and I think it will be a year of learning for them.͟ Said Kinard. Coach Kinard also said that he thinks OCP will be his hardest game this season. The next game that the Royals will be playing is on August 24 against West Oaks. The Royals are running a Wing T offense this year, which is hard to defend. With talented running backs like Frazier and Pifer, now we understand why they are running the ͞Delaware T.͟We expect many of their games as wins and hopefully the Royals will have a great season like last year.

Windermere Prep are Looking Forward to another Record Breaking Year By: Greyson Everidge
WINDERMERE – Everyone in the state knew who Windermere Prep football last season were. After a good 2016-year, Head Coach Jacob Doss took things to unprecedented levels as he helped lead his team to a 10-1 undefeated regular season, falling just short of a State Championship. Despite the loss, they managed to win the Bay Coral Division Championship in addition to catching the eyes of college coaches and fans alike. Going into this season, things are looking equally as promising for the Lakers. They are returning a number of college prospects, including OLB/WR Khadry Jackson. Jackson, who is committed to play at Pittsburgh, earned himself over 20 Division One offers. Following suit is Mason Russel, a senior TE who had a number of Ivy League offers but will instead choose to play Division One baseball at Duke University. Russel also has a 4.0 GPA. Kai Patterson (2x All State Selection QB), Jared Blount (OL/DL), Najji Allen (DB/WR), Matthew Kane, (OLB/TE) Seth Daniels (RB/DB) and Ross Fournet (RB/DB) are all key players till year who will add both size, strength and experience to an already well seasoned team. Windermere also added a trasfer to their ranks from nearby school West Orange, whom Coach Doss believes will make an immediate impact for Windermere Prep. Najji Allen, the aforementioned transfer, is a kick return specialist who will fill a piece of the puzzle for Doss’s team.
The Lions are Looking to have Another Strong Season this Year By: Valencia Axson
Winter Garden- The Foundation Academy football season is kicking off, with the Lions first game away against Cambridge Christian. The Lions have seven returning starters on offense and seven starters on defense. On the offensive side of the ball returning quarterback senior, Henry Austad, will be leading the Lions fast tempo offense. In the previous 2017 season, Austad passed for 1081 yards and 9 touchdowns. The dual-threat quarterback also ran 435 yards and 7 touchdowns last year. Keep an eye out for senior Grayson Wagner, who tied for the state lead in 2A with 7 interception’s last year, to have a great deal of touchdown passes this season. Senior’s Tanner Hammond, Joey Fragoso, alongside with up and coming freshman Bryan Thomas will share defensive duties in the backfield. Foundation’s powerful offensive line is led this year by third team all-state center Josh Taylor. Led by first team all-state defensive end, Warren Sapp II, the Lions will be putting immense pressure on opposing quarterbacks and backfields. “Everybody knows the game starts up-front and if we can attack early, Warren puts us in a great position to do so” stated defensive coordinator, Coach Walker. Foundation’s seven on defense are well experienced, having many achievements in the past. Sophomore Danny Stutsman, juniors Michael Lemieux-Bott, Ethan Terrell and senior Andrew Johns exert strength on the field and are also extremely skillful. Lineman Dylan Parker and safety/ slot receiver Max Klein are tranfers that will immediately begin being hard impact-hitting players. “If we get better every practice and tackle, block, execute and take care of the ball, this team could make a deep run in 2A” stated Coach Lord. Be sure to be on guard for the Foundation Academy Lions in this 2018 season. This is Coach Lord’s 10th season with the Lions. His teams have had playoff appearances in 2008, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. Last season the Lions went 7-3.

Windermere High/Bishop Moore Coach: Fred Priest (1st year, 0-0). WINDERMERE – Being excited to start the second year of the football season at Windermere High, a new level of expectation and focus has been in the fore front of the program, staff and players. Coach Fred Priest has transitioned from the athletic director role he held for the 2017-2018 year at Windermere High over to the Head Coach position with determination to lay a solid foundation for the school football program as a whole. This is a history making year! The very first senior players to hit the field and leave a legacy have created an even more electrifying atmosphere with the student body. Last year on August the 25th of 2017, the Windermere Wolverines went head-to-head with Cypress Creek Bears and experienced a loss of 34 to 3, but this season, they’re looking forward to August 24th againstCypress Creek for their first game. Keep an eye out for these game changers and top players: C Gabe Deneen (Sr, 6-3, 305); LB Amer Amer (Soph., 6-0, 195); DL/OL Judah Martin (Sr., 6-0, 305); DE/TE Rodney Green (Sr., 6-4, 240); DB/RB Dylan Palmer (Jr.; 6-3, 185); RB Austin Hatcher (Sr.); QB Isaiah Jackson (Sr., 6-2, 198); FB Michael Richardson (Jr., 6-0, 205); LB/OL Matthew Messner; LB Jason Rehberg; DL/FB Joshua Curry. Don’t discount the other players because they all have the new attitude of being a “foundation builder.” The Wolverines, Navy and Green, along with Coach Priest and staff will play three of first four games at home at a new stadium located two miles from campus. They are prepared for this fall season and ready to make a mark.
ORLANDO- Bishop Moore High School are expecting greatness this coming season of 2018. Last year and for 16 other years, Matt Hedrick mostly delivered what was expected of his team, the Hornets. Last year the Bishop Moore Hornets went 4-0 for home games, 4-2 for away games, and 1-1 for neutral games putting them at 9-3 overall. The Hornets are returning 13 starters, including six on an offense that is projected to be strong along the offensive line and at wide receiver. The linebacker and defensive back groups, including Senior FS Channing Stotts who is 5-10 and 185 pounds, account for all returning starters on defense. The top newcomers coming to Bishop Moore are Junior TE Caleb Perez from Mount Dora Christian and Senior SS Caleb Blake from Timber Creek. Bishop Moore have six returning offensive line starters and seven returning defensive line starters. Of those six returning starters on the offensive line are RB Jake Kiefer, WR Dylan Brazil, OT Andrew Butler, Senior OT Arthur Ray, Senior OG Mark Fromang, Senior TE Christian Fries. Olympia Football is Ready to Make Some Moves this Season By: Chris Mayer
Travis Gabriel became the fifth head coach in Olympia High’s storied football history when the school announced his hiring in late February. Gabriel’s coaching predecessor at Olympia was Kyle Hayes, who directed the Titans to 19 victories and a pair of Class 8A playoff appearances in three seasons. Gabriel made his Olympia coaching debut during the spring against a familiar opponent in the Boone Braves – he served as Boone’s defensive coordination for the previous four seasons – and last week marked the Titans’ preseason Kickoff Classic against visiting Lake Nona. Olympia dropped a 3826 decision to Lake Nona despite having a 13-point lead late in the first half, but the potential clearly exists for the Titans to have a successful 2018 campaign.Olympia kicks off the regular season Friday, Aug. 24, at home against DzBackyard Bowldz rival West Orange. The Titans defeated West Orange in Week 1 last year and received a total of 48 playoff points, the most they earned against any of their 10 regular-season opponents in 2017.DzIt’s going be fun. One of my best friends is the offensive coordinator at West Orange – Vernon Mitchell – and I’ll see him on Friday,dz Gabriel said. DzAnd we’ll just go out there as a team and do what we can. We’re not going to watch the scoreboard. We’re just going to play until the end and until that final whistle blows and give it everything we’ve got. I tell the kids when you give everything you’ve got, let the scoreboard take care of itself.dzSome of the keys to unlocking Olympia’s potential include: avoiding too many injuries, playing as a team and maintaining focus for a full 48 minutes. The Titans are relatively young and do not possess a lot of starting experience at the varsity level, but they had impressive stretches against a talented Lake Nona squad that controlled the second half with its pass-heavy offense.DzOur kids have to understand that they have to get better when it comes to endurance,dz Gabriel said. DzWe’ve got to get back in the practice mode of running and running because it gets no easier. West Orange is a high-power team, so we’ve just got to get better.dzUniversity of Michigan signee Joe Milton passed for 1,317 yards and 10 touchdowns during his senior year at Olympia. The duties of quarterbacking the offense now rest with junior Garrett Velin (6-3, 190), who will be helped by athletic skill-position players and a promising offensive line that includes seniors Bryan Donald and Jakari Ross.Senior running back Taelson Jean, who had a 75-yard touchdown run against Lake Nona, and junior Donrick Means are strong playmakers. The passing game will alsofeature wide receivers Djim Rene and Maurice Booker, both of whom had touchdown catches in the Kickoff Classic. The defensive backfield was hampered by injuries against Lake Nona. But the hopeis it will develop into a strength behind seniors Amari Kindred, Jamari Kindred, and Dante Clarke; junior Bryant Casteel and sophomore O.J. Havens.DzOur cornerbacks played pretty well, and as a defense we ran to the football a lot and got some turnovers,dz Gabriel said after the Kickoff Classic. DzWe know we’re going to try and not give up the deep routes, and Lake Nona was an east-west offense and they had speed and they had size. But it was a great test for the defense.dzOlympia’s 2018 regular-season schedule once again includes Class 8A District 5games against crosstown rival Dr. Phillips (Oct. 19), Cypress Creek (Sept. 14), Freedom (Sept. 28) and Oak Ridge (Oct. 25).The Titans, who will receive 21 bonus points this year for playing schools that reached the playoffs in 2015 or 2016, posted a 36.60 playoff-point average lastseason. Lake Highland Ready Themselve for Another Great Season By: Zackary Everidge
ORLANDO- Lake Highland’s returning Coach Ben Bullock had a great first season in 2017 while going 3-1 on home games, 2-1 on away games, and 1-2 on neutral games, ending in a positive winning season of 6-4. Their first game of the 2018 season will be against the Kingdom Prep Royals on Aug. 24th at Kingdom Prep. The follow game will be on Aug. 31st at Ocala Trinity Catholic against the Trinity Catholics Celtics. The returning starting offensive players from last season are Quarter Back Tom Furry; Center Luke Hudson; Wide Receiver Darreyl Williams; Wide Receiver Jefferson Walls; Offensive Line Sophomore Francisco Tobar. The returning defensive starters are Defensive Back Darreyl Williams; Senior Defensive Line Sam Audie (5-8, 185); Junior Line Backer Jack Kalicak. The Highlanders have gotten younger across the board in the second season under Bullock. Four of the five starters returning on offense are seniors. The three returnees on defense include Williams, who is relied upon on both sides of the ball. Out of the entire team some key players are Senior Quarter Back Tom Furry (6-2, 180); Senior Wide Receiver and defensive back Jefferson Walls (6-0, 175); Senior Wide Receiver Defensive Back Darreyl Williams is 5-10 and 170 pounds, Senior Offensive Line Backer Carson Rigby should be giving the opposition a big problem standing at 6-4 and 190 pounds. Senior Center Luke Hudson is also a very big target and should be hard to take down at 6-2, 230 pounds. Some of the team’s expectations are to go positive on wins once again this season. They have many returning starters coming back. Lake Highland also believes that their toughest team will be Avon Park because they dealt the most damage against the Highlanders last season.
