THANKSGIVING DAY MATCHUP

Wall Aims to Even Series with Manasquan By Ted Kaiser

WALL TOWNSHIP— After a 21-14 victory last season pulled the Wall Township football team to within one game of evening the all-time Thanksgiving Day series, the Crimson Knights want nothing more than to tie it up this year. Manasquan holds an 8-7 edge, but heads into the game with a four-game losing streak. Wall senses an opportunity to take advantage of a down year for the Warriors. The Crimson Knights are only 3-6 overall themselves, but they a fresh off a 45-21 confidence building win over Somerville. Most of Wall’s losses have come to playoff teams, some of which are still alive fighting for a sectional title. To underrate the Knights would be a mistake. They have a

pretty balanced attack offensively with quarterback Eddie Scott at the helm. He has two passing touchdowns, one to received RJ Janeczek and one to Sean Larkin. Larkin is also the team’s leading rusher and has found the end zone twice on the ground. Shane Richey, Chevesse Covin, and Bill Schneider also see carries and each have two scores as well. Wall has struggled defensively and given up a lot of points this year. Shane McClelland is the leading tackler and Janeczek has an interception and fumble recovery to his credit. Manasquan is also 3-6 overall, but they have not won since October 10th when they defeated Barnegat. However, two of their four losses during the streak have been by only three points. Running back Parker Day leads the Warriors with four touchdowns. Quarterback Liam Grieb has one score and his top receiving target is Damaso Jaime. This is a pretty even match-up of two programs who are used to having better seasons, but find themselves in somewhat of a down year. This Thanksgiving Day game looks very similar to last season with a close battle to be expected.

Mustangs Reach CJ Group IV Final By Michael Rogers

The Brick Memorial football team (8 wins and 2 losses) have had successful seasons three years in a row only to lose in the first round of the playoffs. This year’s closely knit group was not going to let that happen, and as the number one seed in CJ Group IV the Mustangs took on a tough Allentown team (6 wins and 4 losses and the #5 seed) in the semifinals of CJ Group IV.

The Redbirds were coming off a first round win over Freehold Boro by the score of 10 to 7. For the season, Allentown is led by quarterback Jordan Winston who has rushed for 1568 yards and scored 17 touchdowns and running back Joe Maninno running for 1049 yards and 10 touchdowns this season. Allentown got the start to the game they were looking for, as in the first quarter they drove

55 yards on 14 plays and took a 7 to 0 lead on Rick Mottram’s 3 yard touchdown run. Brick Memorial answered the Allentown score by scoring 28 unanswered points after the first quarter to secure the victory and a chance to play for a sectional title. Head coach Walt Currie said: “Allentown has a heck of a quarterback, and they pushed us hard on that scoring drive, but our kids responded when we had to and our defense was relentless.” The Mustangs first score came after frustrating drives that ended just short of the Allentown goal line, but after the defense forced another punt, giving the offense a short field, the offense went to work. From the Allentown 44 yard line running back Tony Thorpe (24 carries for 169 yards in the game) went 34 yards on second down tying the score at 7 to 7. On the ensuing kickoff, Allentown mishandled the ball and Brick Memorials Victor Gomez

jumped on the fumble in the end zone; making the score 14 to 7 after the Matt Cuppari extra point. On the last play of the first half, the Mustangs would strike again - as with time expiring, quarterback Tim Santiago threw a 23 yard touchdown pass to Elie Lavarin as time expired in the half making the score 21 to 7 at halftime. With Brick Memorial’s defense shutting down the Allentown offense the rest of the game, the Mustangs added one more score in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Santiago who rushed for 136 yards on 17 carries in the game scored on a 3 yard touchdown run making the final score 28 to 7 after another Cuppari extra point. The win moves Brick Memorial into the final of the CJ Group IV Section and will face the winner of the other semifinal matchup between Jackson Memorial and Steinert which will be played in two weeks at Rutgers High Point Stadium.

THANKSGIVING DAY MATCHUP

Ocean Looks to Extend Turkey Day Success By Michael Ward

Ocean Township and Monmouth Regional have one of the longer Thanksgiving Day Rivalries in the shore conference. But the Spartans have almost gotten the matchup down to a science over the past 20 years. With a record of 18-2 on Thanksgiving Day against their non-conference rivals, Ocean Township has turned the game into a high point every year for their season regardless of their regular season and tournament performance. After an incredible 8-2 season that showed that they were a contender in a crowded Conference, Ocean was narrowly squeezed out of their sectional

hopes in a close game with Red Bank Regional last Friday. The 21-14 loss was a well-played game by both sides, with Red Bank’s QB Jack Navitsky throwing for 104 yards and finding a receiver in the end zone. Ocean overshadowed Red Bank in passing despite the loss, with Kenny Pickett throwing for 268 yards and completing 20 of his 29 passing attempts. In the Thanksgiving Day Showdown, expect Joey Aldarelli to be a major factor in bringing down passes throughout the course of the game. In their last game, Aldarelli made 10 receptions and drove the ball 182 yards with one drive ending in a touchdown. Tyler Thompson will be a factor for Ocean in the rushing department. Over the course of the season he’s rushed for over 1,300 yards, averaging out to about 135.3 yards per game. Despite their losing record on Thanksgiving Day, Monmouth may make sure that this game doesn’t necessarily go as planned for Ocean. Monmouth Regional, despite not clinching a bracket spot in this year’s playoffs have been on a hot streak in their last couple of games. After eat-

ing a loss to SJV on Halloween, Monmouth turned it around in November winning a close battle with Raritan and annihilating Ewing with a 35-6 win. The two wins improved their record to 5-4. Monmouth hasn’t had a steady quarterback for most of the season, but as of late has been giving the ball to Casey Pachucki. In the role of QB, he’s completed 10 of his 15 passes, 2 of which he threw for touchdowns. The 10 passes resulted in 132 yards. Pachucki is usually on the other end of handoffs as a running back. Over the course of the season he’s picked up 560 yards and has run the ball in for touchdowns 9 times. Regardless of the outcome, the Thanksgiving Day Game will be meaningful to all involved and will set the stage for next year’s contest.

THANKSGIVING DAY MATCHUP Second Longest Thanksgiving Day Football Rivalry Enters its 93 Straight Year By Michael Rogers

With many high school Thanksgiving Day rivalry football games being switched to earlier in the year or not played at all due to changes in the qualifications for playoffs, it's nice to see some schools still following in these great traditions. Long Branch and Red Bank Regional are two schools that are continuing one of the longest Thanksgiving Day rivalries in Monmouth County as the two schools will play each other on Thanksgiving for the 93rd straight year with Long Branch holding a 60 win to 29 loss and 3 tie record in the rivalry all time. Last year’s game Red Bank Regional was an improving team but Long Branch had Senior Daireere Willis, who not only rushed for 295

yards and 3 touchdowns in last year’s 28 to 14 victory by the Green Wave, he also broke the Shore Conferences single season rushing mark with his 2589 yards rushing in his high school career. This year Red Bank will be looking to continue its fantastic season as the Buccaneers are undefeated with 10 wins and no losses and are also 5 and 0 in the B North Division where they won't their first conference championship in many years. Red Bank is led by a high scoring offense led by quarterback Jack Navitsky who has completed 53 of 91 passes for 761 yards and 7 touchdown passes with his favorite target being receiver Sadiq Palmer who has 33 catches for 438 yards and 6 touchdown catches. Palmer has also rushed for 238 yards on 38 carries and has 6 rushing touchdowns. Also rushing the ball for the Buccs is Alim

Godsey who has rushed for 653 yards on 102 carries and 8 touchdowns. For Long Branch, their defense is going to have to slow down the potent Red Bank offense and create some offense of their own. They have running back Keith Cooper, who has rushed for 900 yards this season on 150 carries and has scored 8 touchdowns. Brandon Lee has also rushed for 195 yards on 58 carries and scored 3 touchdowns this year. At quarterback, Long Branch has had success with both Brandon Williams, who has completed 20 of 40 passes for 279 yards and 2 touchdown

passes. Juwan Wilkins has also completed 19 of 32 passes for 238 yards and 4 touchdown passes this season. Red Bank Regional has a chance for their first sectional title as they reached the Finals of the Central Jersey Group III playoffs by defeating Ocean, by the score of 21 to 14, and will play another familiar team in Rumson Fair Haven on December 3rd. It is the Buccaneers first final since 2003. For Long Branch their season is over after the Thanksgiving Day game so they will be giving their all to extend their lead in this great high school rivalry game.

THANKSGIVING DAY MATCHUP Lakewood - Toms River South Tussle for 96th Time By Ted Kaiser

LAKEWOOD— The oldest Thanksgiving Day rivalry in the Shore Conference resumes for the 96th edition this Thursday. Lakewood and Toms River South have kept the tradition of their clash on Thanksgiving Day despite many schools moving their rivalry games due to the state playoffs. Few games mean as much as this one does to their communities. The Indians hold the series edge with a 54-37-4 record and are coming off a thrilling 30-26 win in last year’s meeting. The Piners enter this contest with a 6-3 record as they try to halt a two-game losing streak. They lost a one-point battle to Point Boro in the regular season and fell to Seneca in the state playoffs. Lakewood’s other loss came earlier in the sea-

son to a very strong Rumson-Fair Haven squad. They tied with Point Boro for the Class B South Division crown. The offense revolves around running back Amir Tyler, who is likely to surpass 1,000 rushing yards this season. He has 17 touchdowns. Zyheir Jones is the quarterback and has scored both through the air and on the ground this season. His top receiving target is Adaim Palmer, who has double-digit receptions. Defensively, the Piners have given up some points to good offenses, but they can forced some turnovers. Tyler has two interception returns for touchdowns.

TR South also finds themselves on a losing streak heading into Thanksgiving Day. The Indians have lost four straight and hold a 4-5 record after falling to Hammonton last week. However, all of their losses have been to strong playoff teams including TR North, Jackson Memorial, Brick Memorial, and Brick Township. After losing star quarterback Tymere Berry to graduation, TJ Scuderi has stepped into the role and done a solid job. He has thrown for one touchdown and rushed for three while the Indians have mainly focused on the ground game. Dyshaun Alexander is the team’s leading rusher with over 600 yards. Jaden

Kosh is second in rush yards but leads the offense with five touchdowns. The defense has struggled against some of the top offenses, however, they do have three shutouts to their credit in 2015. Look for Lakewood coach LJ Clark to use a heavy dose of Amir Tyler on the TR South defense. Tyler could break out into a big game, and at the very least if he does not break the big runs, the Piners should control the time of possession with their running game. The Indians will have to avoid turnovers and hope for a low-scoring affair because any offensive fireworks favor Lakewood. Holding Tyler under 100 yards is a tall task and Lakewood seems poised to avenge last season’s Thanksgiving Day defeat.

THANKSGIVING DAY MATCHUP

BLUE DEVILS AND BULLDOGS ON THANKSGIVING By Michael Rogers

As the high school football playoff format changed a few years ago, so did some of the long time Thanksgiving Day rivalry games. Some for the better and one of those was the new matchup between two very close schools who already have rivalries in many other sports as Rumson Fair Haven and Shore Regional agreed two years ago to start playing each other on Thanksgiving. Shore, who had recently tried playing Point Beach on Thanksgiving, had not really had a big rivalry game while the Bulldogs from Rumson had the fourth longest rivalry playing against Red Bank Catholic for the last 61 years. The Casey's held a slight 31 wins to 24 losses to 6 ties lead in the rivalry but Rumson felt it was time for a change and Shore Regional was a natural opponent.

Both teams are successful each year in their respected divisions with Shore Regional competing and winning in the Class C Central Division and the Central Jersey Group I playoffs. They are the defending champion playing in the final again this year and their fifth time in the last six years. Rumson has also had success in the Class A Central Division as well as the CJ Group III Championship where the Bulldogs are the returning champions and playing in the final again this year. Last year’s game was a hard fought defensive battle that Shore Regional was able to win by the score of 13 to 0 and this year’s games looks to be more of the same as both teams have extraordinary defenses with the Blue Devils only giving up 5 points per game and the Bulldogs defense only giving up 7.2 points per game. Some statistics on these teams have the Bulldogs led on defense by Mike Ruane's 114 tackles, Max Pfrang's 71 tackles, and Mike Murdock's 81 tackles. They also have 23 sacks this season and have 12 interceptions to go along with only giving up 7.2 points per game. On offense, Rumson quarterback Michael O'Connor has thrown for 400 yards on completing 38 of 58 attempts and 10 touchdown passes. Running the ball the Bulldogs turn to three different runners. Mike O'Connor has rushed for 785 yards on 100 carries and 8 touchdowns while Bryan Hess has rushed for 652 yards on 95 carries and 7 touchdowns and Mike Vaccarelli has rushed for 623 yards on 115 carries and 7 touchdowns.

For the Blue Devils their defense has been dominant all season long giving up only 5 points per game with 7 sacks and 5 interceptions. On offense, their quarterback Matt Pennell has completed 20 of 36 passes for 412 yards and 7 touchdown passes. He can throw to Connor Rempel who has 5 catches for 100 yards and 3 touchdowns or Duke Russo who has 7 catches for 112 yards and 5 touchdowns. The Blue Devils rushing game is their strength, and they have Doug Goldsmith with 114 carries for 660 yards and 9 touchdowns while Jack Britton has rushed for 688 yards on 51 carries and 12 touchdowns; and Alex Johnson has added 300 yards on 38 carries with 5 touchdowns. This year’s Thanksgiving Day game should be a hard fought defensive game with both teams wanting local bragging rights but keeping in mind both teams play the following week for another sectional title.

THANKSGIVING DAY MATCHUP BARNEGAT - PINELANDS THANKSGIVING GAME STEADLY GROWING INTO A RIVALRY By Mike Ready

Coming off a three year playoff run which saw Barnegat reach the 2013 NJSIAA South Jersey Group III final and capture the Shore Conference Class B South title in 2013 and 2014, it’s been a downward spiral for the Bengals in 2015 as their 1-7 record will attest. After a disappointing first-round exit in last year’s state playoffs the Bengals were hit hard by graduation this season. However, seniors Paul Wickwire, Nick Camarato, Josh Bowen, Joe Scaglione and Danny Dugan have done a good job leading the inexperienced Bengals all year and you can expect big games out of all of them on Thanksgiving Eve as they attempt to end their high school careers on a winning note. Wickwire has accounted for 633 total yards including 236 rushing, 210-yard receiving with two touchdowns and 187 yards on kickoffs. He’s contributed 34 total tackles in the defensive backfield while also providing excellent downfield coverage as well as supporting the run.

BARNEGAT – As the number of traditional Shore Conference Thanksgiving games continues to dwindle in numbers as more and more schools drop the game in support of a more favorable state playoff schedule, the Barnegat versus Pinelands Thanksgiving game – still in its infant stages – is just heating up. The two schools, separated by Route 72 to the north and south and only 15 miles in distance played their first-ever game against each other in 2006 before it was decided to make the yearly divisional game their annual Thanksgiving contest in 2010. It was a perfect fit and a natural rivalry since most of the players have known each other and played against each other since middle school and regularly bump into each other in the shopping center’s and movie theater’s along Route 72 and up-and-down the beaches of Long Beach Island during the summer months.

Another top two-way performer for the Bengals, Bowen leads the team in rushing with 286 yards on 69 carries and two touchdowns. On defense the talented linebacker has been credited with 72 tackles including 36 solo stops, eight tackles for a loss and a sack. Dugan has 11 quarterback hurries playing on the defensive line along with 39 tackles and nine tackles for a loss and along with Scaglione anchors the offensive line. At defensive tackle, Scaglione has recorded 18 tackles, two tackles for a loss and a forced fumble and recovery. Camarato leads the team in tackles and receiving yards commanding presence on both sides of the ball. His 16 receptions for 280 yards averages an impressive 17.5 yards per catch with three touchdowns. On the other side of the ball from his safety spot he’s been in on 72 tackles including 36 solo, five tackles for a loss and an interception. Junior Joe Monaco will be behind center where he’s passed for 557 yards on 47-of83 attempts with five touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Focus Focuson onyour your family familyand andwe’ll we’ll focus focuson onyour your future. future.

Since the games inception in 2010, the Bengals have beaten the Wildcats five straight times, including last year’s 16-8 squeaker in which Pinelands held a 8-0 lead through the first half before two late thirdquarter scores put Barnegat on top for good. The Bengals hold an overall 7-2 advantage in games played against each other since they first met in 2006 – Barnegat’s first year of varsity football.

The Wildcats (2-7, 1-5) have won two games in each of the last two seasons and have not had a winning record since the 2004 season when they went 6-5 before losing in the first round of state playoffs. However, the program is definitely heading in the right direction under head coach Brian

Wilkerson and a win on Thanksgiving would be a huge boast to the Wildcat program. On offense Pinelands runs out of a double wing-T set that has produced a very respectable 1,981 yards on the ground this season averaging 6.2 yards per carry as a team. Sophomore Brennan Richardson leads the team with 672 yards on 96 touches for a seven yard average and two touchdowns. Junior’s Justin Kirkpatrick (343 yards, 7.8 average, 3 TD) and David Fairl (259 yards, 5.4 average, TD) along with senior’s Dean Disanzo (280 yards, 7.2 average, 3 TD) and Will Jenkins (285 yards, 4.8 average, 3 TD) are all dangerous runners that have the potential to make a long night for the Bengals. The defense is led by sophomore middle linebacker Robert Eagle, Fairl at outside linebacker, Richardson a free safety, Jenkins at cornerback and senior outside linebacker Jordan Gomez. The two teams are tied for sixth place in the eight team Class B south with 1-5 records, one game ahead of Manchester Township (0-6) in the cellar. Pinelands is salivating for a taste of its first Thanksgiving game win against rival Pinelands, so I expect the Wildcats to come out sky-high for this one and take home the trophy in a close game, 20-17.

years of the JSN family covering local High School Varsity Sports (and as a former varsity high school football cheerleader I felt inspired to recognize and honor these hardworking cheerleading athletes. Knowing personally how much they sacrifice to their football program, it was obvious to us that we needed to showcase these amazing young women. Many schools responded hallenge to support their cheerleaders by liking or sharing a video of their favorite squad on JSN’s Facebook Page. Many schools nd shared their squads with as much intensity as the girls bring to the field. With many schools competing for this honor, I am proud Ocean Township Cheerleaders have surpassed all other schools with a video reach of over 20,000 and 9,000 views; the highest SN history! SJV UNLOADS ON RBC, ADVANCES TO NON-PUBLIC GROUP 3 FINALS By Michael Ward

The Lancers have yet to be stopped. After a full nine game regular season and two sectional bracket games, SJV was yet to be defeated going into Friday night’s face-off with former Group 3 Champion Red Bank Catholic. The trend of winning for SJV didn’t just continue, but marched forward with an exclamation point as the Lancers cruised past the Caseys for a 49-6 win. SJV’s offense was on full display and was a threat from anywhere on the field, as they’ve showed all season. Anthony Brown, quarterback for SJV, threw for 165 yards and three touchdowns while the rushing offense for the team as a whole racked up over 250 yards and added 3 touchdowns. A notable contributor was Chris Chukwuneke, who ran in 2 of those TD’s and claimed 51 yards. SJV receiver Jeff Sheard saw better success being handed the ball, rushing for 101 yards over just two plays as

opposed to catching 2 passes for 17 yards, one short pass ending finding the end zone. The real star of the show was SJV’s defense. They choked off RBC Quarterback Ed Hahn by applying ample pressure in the pocket. Hahn, who’s been stellar all season, only completed 11 of his 33 attempts and threw for 84 yards on the night. Hahn was lucky to accumulate what he did against the powerful Lancer Defense. He was chased out of the pocket on almost every pass play and was sacked 4 times over the course of the game. The Lancers were masters of making sure passes did not end up in the hands of their intended receivers all night as well. Hahn ended up throwing 3 interceptions over the course of the game. SJV goes onto Rutgers University in their Non-public Group 3 Sectional Final to play 7th seeded Depaul from Wayne. DePaul has recorded a 5-6 record so far this year. The game will be held on December 5th at 10am.

CLASS A NORTH TITLE UP FOR GRABS ON THANKSGIVING IN MIDDLETOWN 1409 Wickapecko Drive, Wanam By Mike Ready

MIDDLETOWN – In this year’s annual Thanksgiving rivalry game between Middletown South and Middletown North, there’s a little added significance to the game as the two cross-town rivals meet with the Shore Conference Class A North overall divisional title on the line.

coach Steve Bush. Last year was its first winning season since 2000 and their seven wins this season is the most since going 9-2 in 1996, when they won their last state championship.

Lions junior quarterback Donald Glenn has made steady progress since starting as a freshman in 2013 and is zeroing in on 2000-yard passing yards this season with 1,873 yards passing on 117-of-194 attempts with 16 touchdowns and seven interceptions. His go-to-man has been junior Brendan Kube who has hauled in 58 passes for 1,003 yards and five touchdowns. Senior tight end Josh Gomez (15-236, TD), junior Dwight Wilkerson (22-243, 4 TD) and sophomore Connor Welsh (9-147, 3 TD) are all reliable targets for Glenn.

After missing five games with an injury, starting running back Chad Freshnock – a 2014 second-team All-Shore selection - is back in the lineup rushing for 439 yards on 81 carries and four touchdowns including 167 yards on 29 carries and a touchdown in the Lions 31-6 first-round win over Sayreville. In his absence, sophomore running

The Eagles trio of linebackers including junior Kevin Higgins, senior Dylan Rogers, and McCarthy are one of the top linebacking corps in the state and make it impossible to run on their defense while consistently pressuring the quarterback on the blitz. The defensive line, with senior Donald Jack Urhig, junior Will Gullick and sophomore Jake Krelin set the tone up front while senior’s Tom Coffey and Tom Marron and juniors Max Imsho and Ian Porter clean up in the backfield.

The Eagles (10-0, 5-0) have already clinched a tie for the divisional championship, however, a win would hand them their first outright divisional title since 2009, while Middletown North (7-3, 4-1) will be attempting to hammer out a tie for the divisional championship, which would be its first divisional title since 1983. However, that’s easier said than done for the Lions. Middletown South is currently ranked No.1 in the state by the Star Ledger, No.1 in the Shore Conference by the Asbury Park Press and No.2 in the MSG Tri-State top 25 and have beaten Middletown North 15 straight games dating back to the 2000 season, including Friday night’s 41-14 win in the North Jersey Section II, Group IV semifinal. Last season’s Thanksgiving game was a classic as the Lions almost pulled off the upset coming back from a 10-0 halftime deficit to take a 13-10 third quarter lead on the strength of quarterback Donald Glenn’s two touchdown passes. South tied the game with a field goal before Cole Rogers gave the lead back to the Eagles with a 64-yard run with 6:13 left in the game. It looked as though the Lions would be getting the ball back with a chance to tie with 2:27 left in the game and the Eagles facing a fourth-and-2 from their own 23, but a gutsy fake punt resulted in a first down and the Eagles ran out the clock. Middletown North has made tremendous strides as a program the last three seasons under the direction of head

passing for 1,222 yards on 71-for-126 attempts with 16 touchdowns and six interceptions. Junior’s Samson Dube (15-285, 4 TD) and Jeff Lewandowski (9-182, 3TD) with senior Tom Coffey (11-210, 4 TD) are Mosquera’s main targets.

In a quirk of scheduling, the Eagles and Lions met for the first time ever in the playoffs Friday night at ‘The Swamp’ in the second round of the NJSIAA North II Group IV playoffs and will meet again on Thanksgiving.

back Connor Welsh was outstanding rushing for 739 yards on 131 carries and nine touchdowns counting last week’s 73-yards on four carries, three touchdown performance. Wilkerson has chipped in with 188 yards on just 33 carries. Defensively, junior linebacker Nick Kish leads the Lions with 110 tackles (10th in the state), eight tackles for a loss (TFL), and two sacks while senior defensive end Matt Dombrowski has been in on 70 tackles including 38 solo, 12 TFL, nine sacks, 17 quarterback hurries and one interception. Kube (48 T, 2 Int), Gomez (50 T) and Wilkerson (67 T) provide excellent coverage and run support in the backfield. Junior linebacker Brock Zecker averages 9.6 tackles a game with a sack and two interceptions while another junior linebacker, Thomas Anderson has recorded 64 tackles. Middletown South is led by senior running back Cole Rogers who has rushed for 1,332 on 139 carries in nine games for an impressive 9.6 yards per carry average and 19 touchdowns. Rogers was a second-team All-Shore pick a year ago when scored 27 touchdowns while averaging 7.7 yards per carry on his way to 1,858 yards rushing on 241 carries. Junior James McCarthy, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound battering ram, compliments Rogers fluid running style with shear brute force. He averages a whopping 10.9 yards per carry on 53 touches for 578 yards and 15 touchdowns. Senior quarterback Matt Mosquera - one of the top kickers in the state – has had a solid season managing the offense

In the Eagles 41-14 win over the Lions in Friday night’s sectional semifinal, Rogers exploded for 242 yards rushing on 22 carries and four touchdowns while his quarterback passed for 176 yards and two touchdowns going 10-of-11 in the process. Senior wideout Spencer Pereless returned from an injury with a vengeance catching five ball for 116 yards and a touchdown. The Glenn-to-Kube connection was on fire but wasn’t enough to dethrone the Eagles. Glenn went 22-of-31 for 281 yards with 222 of those yards going to Kube on 13 catches, including a 55-yard touchdown strike from Glenn.

THANKSGIVING DAY MATCHUP

Raritan/Holmdel Thanksgiving Rivalry Continues By Michael Ward

It’s safe to say that the game means more to Holmdel than usual. The Hornets have been struggling all season with an abysmal record of 1-7. Winning the Thanksgiving Day Game could end the season on a high note and bring them closer to evening the score with their neighbor to the north. As Hazlet’s Raritan High School is preparing to play in their Group x Sectional final against the Lincoln Lions of Jersey City, they return to familiar turf at Holmdel High School to face off against their Thanksgiving Rivals. With a 5-1 record on Thanksgiving against the Hornets, the Rockets are looking to extend their winning record and go onto their finals game at Kean University on December 5th with another notch in their belt. The two adjacent towns haven’t played each other this season, but the edge is with Raritan to win and win big.

Just in their Finals bracket alone, as the 6th seeded team they managed to overpower 2nd seeded Point Boro with a 17-7 win and then opened up on 2nd seeded Delaware Valley with a 42-13 finish. The game today will be a chance for Raritan to solidify what they’ve done right so far in the playoffs and work out any kinks in their system. They’ll need it going into their game for the Group 2 Championship Round. Raritan will go on to face 1st seeded Lincoln at Kean University on December 5th.

Hazlet’s Rockets haven’t had a flawless season but have won where it’s counted. The 5-5 team had time to focus on the State Finals after not seeing daylight in the Shore Conference Finals. The Rockets have especially been good at upsetting in games where they were not favored, driving them further into post season than most observers expected. A big part of Raritan’s offense throughout the season has been Senior Derek Ernst. He’s rushed for 1,059 yards on the season and has run in 13 touchdowns. He’ll be a threat against the Holmdel Defense throughout the course of the Thanksgiving Day Game.

THANKSGIVING DAY MATCHUP Long Thanksgiving Tradition Continues as 88th Meeting with Neptune vs Asbury Park By Michael Rogers

The high schools from Neptune and Asbury Park will meet on the football field for the 88th time when the two schools continue one of the longest Thanksgiving Day rivalries in all of high school football. Neptune leads the series with a record of 46 wins and 37 losses with 4 ties along the way. Neptune won last year’s game by the score of 44 to 15 a week after they lost in the NJSIAA Group III Semifinals.

place behind undefeated Shore Regional (10 wins and 0 losses) in the B Central division, and they lost their first round playoff game to Keyport by the score of 28 to 21. For Neptune, the Fliers have a 3 win and 6 loss record in the very tough B North Division that was win by Red Bank Regional and their undefeated season (10 wins and 0 losses).

This year, the regular seasons have not gone as well as anticipated and both teams are out of playoff contention leading up to this game, which will only intensify this long rivalry as all the players know this is the last time many of them will play competitive football. This season for Asbury Park, the Blue Bishops have a 6 win and 3 record finishing in second

Individually for Asbury Park, they will look to their quarterback to lead the offense as he has all season in Davon Thompson who has thrown for 1008 yards on 52 of 118 completions and he has thrown 16 touchdown passes. He also leads the team in rushing with 526 yards on 86 carries and another 4 touchdowns. When Thompson doesn't

have the ball the Blue Bishops will look to Charlie Sanders who has rushed for 279 yards on 52 carries and 4 touchdowns and Trevor Saunders who has rushed for 309 yards on 22 carries and 4 touchdowns this season. Catching the ball, Asbury Park has Jordan Stephens who has 29 catches for 614 yards and 11 touchdowns this season. On the defensive side of the ball, Asbury Park has Charles Sanders leading the way with 55 tackles this season while Nymeir Aglogos has 52 tackles this season. For Neptune, the Fliers are led on offense by their quarterback Chase Fairbanks

who has completed 22 of 53 passes for 402 yards and has thrown 2 touchdown passes. His leading receivers are David Harrington who has 9 catches for 79 yards and Marvin Morgan who has 2 catches for 102 yards and 2 touchdowns. Kahmar Rice also has 3 catches for 146 yards and a touchdown. Rasheed Martin leads the running backs with 147 yards on 35 carries and he has scored 2 touchdowns. All of the statistics are thrown out the window when two longtime rivals meet in such a meaningful game just like the Neptune versus Asbury Park Thanksgiving Day game that will be played for the 88th time on Thursday November 26th at 10:00 AM at Asbury Park.

RED BANK BEATS OCEAN TO KEEP UNBEATEN SEASON AND TITLE HOPES ALIVE By Mike Ready

OCEAN TOWNSHIP – A decisive fourth-quarter interception, two late-game defensive stands and three touchdowns by Syracuse-bound running Sadiq Palmer helped third-seeded Red Bank Regional secure a 21-14 win over second-seeded Ocean Township at Carelli Field Friday night to reach their first NJSIAA final since 2003. Red Bank junior defensive back Jalen Willis snuffed-out a screen pass intended for Ocean junior wide receiver Joey Aldarelli intercepting the ball at the Ocean 35-yard line and returning it to the 16 with 10:36 left in the game and the score knotted at 14-14.

“I think we just come up big, when the spotlights on we come up big,” Willis said. “We’ve been practicing that play a whole bunch. We’ve been watching film of the play and running it and running and drilling it in practice. I was on it from the beginning because they had run it a couple of times and made sure I was there each time. The first time he (Ocean quarterback Kenny Pickett) saw me and stopped, this time he threw it and I just caught the ball.” Three plays after the interception, Syracuse-bound running back Sadiq Palmer fought off a host of would-be

tacklers to find his way into the end zone for a 21-14 lead with 9:24 left in the game. It was Palmer’s third touchdown of the game which saw him pick up 53 hard-fought yards on 11 carries while also catching three balls for 60 yards. On defense, Palmer helped the Bucs take a step closer to their first sectional title since 1995 recording at least 12 tackles and a red zone interception in the monumental win. “We’re going to the championship and that hasn’t been done in years,” Palmer said. “Whatever we got to do for the team that’s what we’re going to do, each and every one of us. If we all play together we’ll see the right outcome. Ocean was hard competition and I’m just glad we won.” On the Spartans (8-2, 5-1) ensuing possession following the interception they drove to the Red Bank 46-yard line before a third-and-three incompletion forced a punt with 6:21 remaining in the game. Red Bank (10-0, 5-0)then ran close to four minutes off the clock and appeared to driving for the clinching touchdown when a holding penalty on a Palmer 25-yard run to 18 derailed the drive pushing the Bucs all the way back to their own 48-yard line. A double reverse on a third-and-15 netted two yards and Red Bank was forced to punt the ball back to Ocean giving them one last shot to tie with 2:08 left in the game.

RBR’S # 6 SADIQ PALMER MAKES AN AMAZING CATCH FOR THE 1ST DOWN to the Red Bank 45-yard line. However, intense pressure by the Bucs defensive line - led by senior end Sean Naiman (1 sack) – forced Pickett into three straight incompletions before Palmer and junior defensive back Matt Reardon knocked Aldarelli out of bounds four-yards short of the first down marker on fourth down to seal the win. Adarelli had a magnificent game with 10 catches for 182 yards and a touchdown as Ocean outgained the Bucs (349-241), but Red Bank won the turnover battle and made the crucial plays when they had to be made. Pickett finished the night 20-of-29 for 270 yards and a touchdown but his three interceptions were drive killers that turned the game in Red Bank’s favor. His interception on fourth-and-seven from the 11-yard line with 2:36 remaining in the half wiped out a chance to go into halftime tied and with momentum on their side. To his credit, Pickett took his team 58 yards in seven plays to forge a 14-14 tie to open the second half hitting Adarelli in stride as he crossed the goal line for a 30-yard scoring strike for their final points of the game. Navitsky was picked off on the Bucs first two possessions of the second half with Spartan defensive back Greyson Stoothoff getting both picks, but Ocean turned the ball over on downs after the first pick when Naiman stopped Thompson for no gain on fourth-and-one from the 50 and then the Willis interception on their next set of downs. The Bucs defense bent, but did not break and came up big in one spot after another to preserve the win. Junior linebacker Chris Outterbridge was again sensational in racking up double-digit tackles including a sack of Pickett. Red Bank never trailed in the game scoring on their second possession after getting excellent field position when they pinned Ocean back at their own one on their first possession of the game and forced them to punt from the end zone after a Naiman sevenyard sack. Then on fourth-and-nine from the 33yard line, senior quarterback Jack Navitsky found Palmer at the hash marks around the 20-yard line and the elusive back did the rest to give Red Bank an early 7-0 lead. Ocean responded on their next possession with a Pickett to Adarelli 56-yard completion setting up a Palmer 11-yard touchdown run to take the lead back. Red Bank answered right back with a quick 53-yard, five play drive highlighted by a 40-yard pass from Navitsky to Reardon that set up a Palmer three-yard touchdown run with 30 seconds left in a wild first quarter of end-to-end action. Navitsky was solid and did a nice job managing the game against an exceptional defense going 6-of13 for 103 and a touchdown but more importantly avoided one sack another with his legs to keep drives moving in a positive direction. “From the beginning of the season people doubted us,” Navitsky said. “They doubted we were going to beat RBC, and then they said we couldn’t beat this Ocean team twice. Our mindset every week is that we have something to prove.”

Red Bank will play longtime rival Long Branch on Thanksgiving with a chance to clinch the outright Shore Conference Class B North title after already being assured of at least a tie for its first divisional crown since winning Class C in 1977 under current Lacy coach Lou Vircillo. Following that, it’s the ‘Battle of Ridge Road’ as the Bucs will face No.1 seeded Rumson-Fair Haven for a shot at their first state title in forty years. “We’re going to take it one game at a time,” Palmer said. “We got Long Branch next so we’re worried about Long Branch. Then when it’s time for RFH comes we’re going to work even harder so we can get the win.” No team in Red Bank history has gone 12-0, which is two wins away and another shot at making program history for this very likeable team. The Bucs are currently ranked third in the Shore Conference, No. 15 in the state and No.21 in the MSG Tri-State rankings.

“This is uncharted territory but I’m loving the ride,” Bucs head coach Nick Giglio said. “We talk about being hungry and humble all the time and not let those stats go to our head. Right now we’re just worried about Long Branch.”

JACKSON MEMORIAL UNLOADS, ADVANCES TO GROUP 4 FINALS By Michael Ward

Jackson Memorial wanted to go to Rutgers on Dec. 5th. As the 7th seeded team in their Group 4 bracket, they wanted to show 6th seeded Steinert that they wanted it more. And that’s exactly what they did. They showed that desire on Saturday by serving up a 56-10 blowout that had the Mercer County hopefuls struggling all game against an unrelenting offense. Jackson was quick on their feet all game, racking up over 300 yards in rushing alone. Running back Mike Gawlik was the biggest contributor on the squad, individually responsible for 158 yards and reaching the end zone twice. Former wide receiver Kyle Johnson fell into his new quarterback role well. The way he was playing anyone would have thought he used to be a running back, taking the ball for 112 yards himself on the ground and recording a touchdown.

Connor Testa made the most of his two attempts at running the ball and went for 89 yards, scoring a touchdown on a blocked kick attempt from Steinert. Steinert had an issue with their quarterback all game, or rather ‘who’ they wanted as their quarterback. Over the course of the game 4 different players were put in the position of QB and all saw limited success. They were collectively picked off 4 times and only passed the ball for a total of 58 yards. Jackson Memorial will face Brick Memorial in their Sectional Final. This could mean retribution for Jackson as their Shore Conference title hopes were dashed earlier this year with a loss to Brick Memorial. Jackson was seeded 7th in the bracket with Brick Memorial being the 1st seed.
