Spartans Return Talent in Tough B North

A NEW ERA FOR NINE PROGRAMS IN THE SHORE

The Ocean Township football program has a long and proud history which will no doubt continue with head coach Don Klein at the helm. Going into his ninth season running this proud and productive program, this season is full of promise and optimism with a load of talented players returning. Coach Klein has a career record of 48 wins and 35 losses and 1 tie in the very tough Class B North division, where every game is critical for a successful season. Coach Klein said, "I am pleased with how hard the whole team is working and if we can continue to improve and stay healthy we have the opportunity to put ourselves in a position to compete at a very high level this season."

With the 2015 High school football season ABOUT to begin, there brings a renewed optimism to players and spectators alike, though usually for different reasons. For some, it could be a fresh start, to forget about the previous year. For others, it could be to build on the previous season’s success. This year when the shore conference football season begins there will be nine new head coaches. For Asbury Park, Brick Township, Mater Dei Prep, Keansburg, Saint John Vianney, Colts Neck, Holmdel, Howell and Freehold Township the coaches will either be focused on a rebuilding program or on the continued success that the program has developed.

By Michael Rogers

The experienced players the Big Red have returning this season will go a long way determining in how successful this year's team will be. Ocean is coming off of a season where they advanced to the semi finals of the Central Jersey Group III playoffs by defeating Howell (the #1 seed) by a score of 19-14. The Big Red eventually would lose to future champion in Central Jersey Group III in Matawan by the score of 23 to 20. Coach Klein said ,"Our kids played their hearts out in that game and even though we came up short on the scoreboard the players gained valuable experience that will go a long way in helping our team achieve our goals for this season." Ocean returns some key offensive weapons that should make this an explosive offense this season. Senior Tyler Thompson returns as running back and he has been working extremely hard in the off-season. His 6'1', 200-pound frame is even bigger and faster than last season. Tyler will be looking to add to his already 3200 yards gained and the 32 touchdowns he has scored in his first three years at Ocean. Also returning is experienced quarterback Junior Kenny Pickett who at 6'2" and 185 pounds has also been working very hard in the off-season, working to improve upon his already impressive sophomore performance throwing for 1400 yards and 16 touchdown passes. Another experienced returning player

is senior running back Raquan Dean who last year rushed for 400 yards as a junior, and who is considered key player on the defense for Ocean, being Coach Klein’s best cover cornerback and a very solid tackler. When Pickett throws the football he will have junior Joey Aldearelli who, at 6'2" and 200 pounds, returns after catching 39 passes last season. Coach Klein had this to say about his offense, "The kids have been working very hard in the weight room and doing what's needed to prepare for a long season. We will score some points with this talented and experienced group of players." The Big Red's defense is also solid and returns a talented, tested, strong and experienced group led by senior linebacker T.J. Saldutti, who at 6'1" and 195 pounds, will anchor the defense. Last season as a Junior Saldutti recorded over 100 tackles, making his presence felt all over the field. Coach Klein said, "In this division defense is a must and our front seven have been improving. We work on technique and tackling every single day and only when we start playing games will we see how much our hard work has helped us." Another aspect of success with any football team is if they stay healthy and coach Klein knows that all too well, saying "So far we have stayed healthy this season but if someone should get hurt we have a ‘next man up’ mentality on this team so someone will step up and step in wherever is needed. We are excited to get this season started and, as a team, we know the schedule is tough and every other team is working hard as well so we will see how much our off-season and preseason work helps us this season. We are healthy, prepared, and hungry so let the season begin." Ocean opens the season with three division games, the first one being on September 11th at Neptune High School in an early key division game before their home opener the following week on September 18th at home against Wall High School, then Red Bank Regional visits on September 25th.

Five of these coaches, Lenny Zdanowicz from Brick Township, John Bird from Keansburg, Tim Fosque from Asbury Park, Shannon Hoadley from Mater Dei Prep and Darien Barnes from Colts Neck are first time head football coaches. Corey Davies from Freehold Township, Derek Sininsky from Saint John Vianney, Greg Lavaca from Holmdel, and Luke Sinkhorn from Howell will be returning to the sidelines as a head football coaches, but at a new schools. During Media Day for the Jersey Sporting News, I had a chance to sit down with a few of these coaches to get an understanding of the challenges involved when taking over an existing program. While talking to each coach, it becomes clear that each job holds different challenges. The biggest off-season goals were getting the strength and conditioning program going, especially for the coaches that were hired later in the off-season, and putting together a staff. Luckily for them, most had a lot of qualified coaches that were very interested in coming on board. Brick’s new head coach Lenny Zdanowicz stated that becoming the new mentor for the Brick Township Green Dragons “was a dream come true, I came up through the Brick football ranks being coached himself, by the legendary Warren Wolf, Tim Osborne, Kevin Campbell, and countless others. I am excited to continue what Brick foot-

ball has established the last two years (two championships) and build up the youth levels.” Asbury Park’s Tim Fosque was able to bring back a majority of the coaching staff with a couple new additions. Coach Fosque shared that he feels his players deal with a lot of adversity off of the field so he has implemented some programs to assist the student-athletes successfully meet those challenges, involving them in community service which he hopes will aid in developing team building skills. Coach Fosque’s goal is to instill a “Pay it Forward” philosophy in his players to help foster team building and community spirit and involvement. Cory Davies sees a lot of similarities to when he first took over the Howell Rebel’s Football Program. He feels that Freehold Township has had a lot of success in the other boys’ sports programs. He is very enthusiastic that Freehold Township has 95 upperclassmen out for the football program. The biggest mindset he wants to establish is for the players to work hard to improve each day. For Shannon Hoadley of Mater Dei Prep and John Bird of Keansburg, their appointments came very late in the off-season. On the plus side, they were both staff the previous few years as the team’s defensive coordinators. Shannon Hoadley stated that things are looking good at Mater Dei and their numbers are up (40 players). Mater Dei has a new superintendent, Mr. James Hauenstein who is very supportive of the Athletic programs. John Bird feels his team was competitive in many games last year and wants to see the team be able to play hard for a full 48 minutes.

RUMSON FAIR-HAVEN QUIETLY CONFIDENT OF CHANCES FOR THREE-PEAT By Mike Ready

RUMSON – Last season the Bulldogs won their second straight state title and third since 2010 giving the school its first back-to-back state championships in program history. All-State running back Charlie Volker was the driving force behind both championship runs as he torched the opposition for an eyepopping 2,108 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns in 2013 while being named the Shore Conference Player of the Year. A year later, despite playing on a bad ankle the entire year and missing time, he shredded his way to 1,441 yards and 18 touchdowns, including 160 yards and a 48-yard touchdown run in the championship.

yards on four touches. Hull will line up at wide receiver this season as well. Sophomore Gavin Pomphrey is waiting in the wings. Besides Hull, who caught five balls for 50 yards last season, the receiving corps be manned by newcomers. However, 6-foot-6 sophomore Elijah McAllister has been a revelation after an excellent preseason showing and has the potential to become a big-time receiving threat in the mold of former Giant Plaxico Buress. He was the first man off the bench as a freshman center on the Bulldogs

Most have assumed that without Volker this will be a down year for the Bulldogs, but that couldn’t be any further from the truth. Year-after-year from topto-bottom this is a program that continues to feed quality student athletes into all levels of the program without missing a beat and this year is no different.

“Ruane had a tremendous year last season we expect even more this year, ”He put on 20 pounds of muscle and can dead lift over 500 pounds – he’s incredibly strong. He’s definitely a scholarship player.

“People might think I’m a little crazy,” head Coach Bryan Batchler (3rd season 20-4) said. “But even without Charlie I think we could be better team than last year and quite possibly better than the 2013 team.” Dual-threat junior quarterback Michael O’Connor will do his best to help soften the blow of losing Volker after putting together a solid 2014 season when he ran for 912 yards with 11 touchdowns while passing for another 485 yards and seven touchdowns. “We’ll be throwing the ball more this season,” O’Connor said. “But we’ve got three great backs that I have total confidence in.”

O’Connor is referring to juniors Matt Veccharelli and Bryan Hess and senior Lachlan Hull. Veccharelli appears to have won the starting job and has the most game-time experience of the three. Veccharelli stepped in for the injured Volker against St. John Vianney gaining 138 yards on 19 carries so he’s no stranger to pressure situations. Hess had six carries for 27 yards while Hull picked up 23

Past Bulldogs defenses have the reputation as being rugged, hardnosed and physical units that never stop coming at you. This year’s defense returns eight starters from a group that gave up a mere 13.6 points a game last season and fits that same mold. Rumson brings back all three starting linebackers that are the backbone of the defense in their 4-3 scheme. Middle linebacker Mike Ruane had a breakout sophomore season which saw him record 102 tackles en route to being named All-Division for his efforts. At strong side linebacker is senior captain Maxx Pfrang who managed to make 75 tackles despite an injury plagued season. But once he was healthy at the end of the year he was “killer” according to Batchler. James Melia well man the weak side after chipping in with 52 tackles last season as a sophomore.

Volker is now at Princeton University and for the first time in three years the Bulldogs will be chasing their third straight title without their star back.

“We’re impressed with Michal’s leadership and have very high expectations for him” Batchler said. “He has a lot of experience and has had a tremendous off-season, not only in the weight room where he put on 15 pounds of muscle, but in camps making himself a legitimate 1A prospect.

basketball team last season and his agility and athleticism has translated well onto the football field. Senior John Kingdon and 6-foot-4 junior Tyler Pierson have performed well and are in the mix for a starting job while seniors Noah Stoudemire and A.J. Bruno will back up. The offensive line returns two starters and one with starting experience. As a unit they are big and strong and should develop into a cohesive unit sooner than later. Senior tackle James Oncea (6-foot3, 245 lbs.) and junior guard Tim Leonard (6-foot-3, 280 lbs.) are both returning starters while senior A.J. Kelly (6-foot-1, 260 lbs.) has two starts under his belt at center. Sophomore Nate Raphan (6-foot-

The defensive line is anchored by senior Butchy Clark at one defensive tackle spot. Clark – undersized for a tackle – is a tough as they come. He’s relentless in his pursuit with a motor that stops lead to 9.5 sacks last season – good for seventh in the Shore. Junior Liam Adams (6-foot-0, 265 lbs.) will line up at starting tackle next to Clark and comes with high expectations. Senior Matt Waters is back at defensive end after a solid season that saw him force a fumble and recover for a touchdown in the championship. Junior Jack Woods (6-foot-2, 210 lbs.) moves over from offensive tackle and will start opposite Waters on the other side at end. Senior Ian Clark will be in the rotation as well. Senior cornerbacks Griffin Schultz and Mike Carusso and junior strong safety Mike Murdock combined for seven interceptions last season with Carusso picking off a team-high three balls. Junior Emmit Jennings gets the nod at starting free safety. Juniors Pat Russo and Jake Giannotto will see time as well in the backfield. “You don’t replace a Charlie Volker – he’s the best running back in school history. Batchler said. We’ve changed our offense from the I formation to the shotgun to take advantage of our strengths. We’ll throw the ball more this year but we do have quality people at running back that will get plenty of touches.”

Shore Conference Preview DIVISION PREDICTONS: CLASS A NORTH

1) MIDDLETOWN SOUTH 2) MANALAPAN 3) MIDDLETOWN NORTH 4) FREEHOLD 5) FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP 6) HOWELL TOWNSHIP 7) MARLBORO

Middletown South is the clear-cut favorite and one of the top teams in the state. See my 2015 Middletown South preview in this issue for an in-depth analysis of the Eagles. Manalapan won their first state title in program history last season when with the CJGV title. This season they must replenish most of their skill players, including second team All-Shore quarterback Dan Anerella and first team All-Shore running back Imamu Mayfield. However, upfront on the offensive line the Braves will boast one, if not the best lines in the state. AllShore selections Joe Sellmeyer and Reily Radosevich return to anchor a line that also brings back Anthony Tardogno, Jake Levin and Mitchell Trabb. The game is won in the trenches and the Braves will be leaning heavily on their line as a new crop of skill players gain experience and begin to make names for themselves. The talent pool Manalapan has to choose from year-in and year-out is bottomless, which affording the Braves the luxury of plugging in new faces without facing any dramatic drop-off in talent from one year to the next. Mayfield’s brother Naim and returning senior Marcus Salinas (24-206 TD) will get first crack at replacing Imamu. Senior Anthony Bassani in the secondary, senior Lee Maksimik at linebacker and Radosevich on the line return to lead the defensive unit. Senior Anthony Sciarappa, junior Cody Weiner and RBC transfer Luke Corcione are in a battle for the starting quarterback spot. Middletown North should make the state playoffs for the third year in a row and hopes are high for a chance at the division title. Junior quarterback Donald Glenn returns with higher expectations heaped upon him now in his third year as a starter after passing for 1278 yards and 16 touchdowns but also tossing 10 interceptions. Second team All-Shore running back Chad Freshnock is back after going for 1,185 yards on the ground with 14 touchdowns and is one of the division’s top outside linebackers with 43 tackles, 4 TFL and 3 sacks. Junior Nick Kish is back on the edge at linebacker where he registered 106 tackles, 4 TFL, 2 sacks and one Int. Senior Matt Dembrowski (27 tackles, 7 TFL, 2 sacks) anchors the defensive line along with junior Dwight Wilkerson (44 tackles, TFL, Int.) Senior Josh Gomez is back at safety where he had 40 tackles last season and will be a top receiving threat. Senior Patrick McGowan and junior Jake Goldfarb are back on the offensive line and will be doing double duty on the defensive line as well. Freehold won seven games last season, but are now faced with the daunting task of replacing second team All-Shore running back Josh Dixon’s 1,407 yards on the ground and 16 touchdowns. Senior dual-threat quarterback Jake Curry will be counted on heavily to pick up the slack after a productive 2014 season which saw him rush for 649 yards and five touchdowns and pass for an additional 358

yards and three touchdowns. Sophomore Asante Worthy (26-145 2 TD, 76 yards rec.) showed a great deal of potential last season which resulted in him getting the job of filling Dixon’ s shoes. Seniors Matt Curcio and Jamel Smith-Rush return at wide receiver. Junior Xavier Madera had a breakout year at linebacker last year and will be counted on heavily to provide leadership this season. Freehold To w n s h i p ’ s new head c o a c h Cory Davis, who engineered Howell’s high-powered spread offense will be instrumental in improving on last season’s 4-6 record with the maturation of senior quarterback Jack O’Brien (76-178 1,247 9 TD). Junior Anthony Lotti will be O’Brien’s top target at wide receiver as well as starting at safety. Senior linebackers Quin Cleary (93 tackles) and Nick Galanti are expected to lead the defense. Marlboro is fortunate to have a substantial number of players with starting experience returning this year to make them at least competitive. Returners such as junior quarterback Michael Wolfe, senior Tyler Tanen (WR/DB), senior Shane Mullen (WR/DB), senior Jake Weiner (OL/DL), senior Bhanu Chadalawada (OL/DL), and junior Nnamdi Unachukwi (DE) are talented players that give the Mustangs the potential for a two-plus win season after a winless 2014.

CLASS A CENTRAL

1) SAINT JOHN VIANNEY 2) MATAWAN 3) RUMSON FAIR-HAVEN 4) RARITAN 5) MANASQUAN 6) MONMOUTH 7) HOLMDEL It’s a three-team race in the Class A Central between SJV, Matawan and RFH all capable of taking division. After a record-setting 2014 season which saw the Saint John Vianney win a school-record 10 games, a Class A Central division title and a trip to the NJSIAA Non-Public Group III semifinals, the last thing you would expect is a coaching change. But that is exactly what occurred to the utter shock of most supporters surrounding the Lancers program. Mark Ciccotelli is out and Derek Sininsky is in. To the players credit they seem to have taken things in stride and the transition has been relatively smooth thus far with the focus on football and winning a state championship this season after coming up just short of one last season. The talent runs deep on this year’s team as its No.16 ranking in the Star Ledger’s preseason top 20 will attest. Senior quarterback and Boston College commit heads the list of returners after a spectacular breakout junior season that saw him selected All-Shore first team after throwing for 2,198 yards and 25 touchdowns while also rushing for an additional 805 yards and nine touchdowns. Khalil Haskins – one of the most exciting players in the state and a first team All-Shore pick at cornerback (62 tackles, 6 Int.) – will be Brown’s go-to guy after grabbing 25 balls for 398 yards and two TD’s while rushing for 566 yards and six TD’s and returning a punt for a TD. Junior All-Division OT Micah Clark will anchor the line, while on defense second team All-Shore linebacker Calvin Beaty (88 tackles,

6.5 sacks) and All-Division linebacker Tyler Tedeschi (72 tackles, 8.5 sacks) head up the unit. The Matawan Huskies will battle for the title and will make a strong run for their second consecutive state title. See my full 2015 Matawan preview in this issue for an in-depth analysis of the Huskies. Rumson Fair-Haven will be in the mix for the title and has the returning talent to take a stab at their third state title in a row. Gone is All-State running back Charlie Volker (Princeton University) and with his departure comes a switch to the spread offense and a plan to throw the ball more and utilize the talents of returning dual-threat quarterback Michael O’Connor (912 rush 11 TD’s, 485 pass 7 TD’s). Senior Lachlan Hull returns at wide receiver and will be joined by 6-foot-6 junior Elijah McAllister, senior Jon Kingdon and 6-foot-4 junior tyler Pierson. Junior Matt Vecharelli gets his start in the backfield after seeing limited time last season including a 138-yard rushing performance filling in for an injured Volker. Junior All-Division linebacker Mike Ruane, senior linebacker Max Pfrang and senior defensive tackle Butchy Clark head up the defensive unit with senior James Oncea anchoring the offensive line. Raritan should be solid again and continue to take the next step after improving to 5-5 last season after going 0-10 in 2012 and 3-7 in 2013. Senior running back Derek Ernst will be leaned on heavily this season after running for 1,505 yards and being named third team All-Shore. Senior Sean Ennis will see action in the backfield as well as linebacker, where he’s a three-year starter. Senior left tackle Bo Bentley is the returning leader on the offensive line with seniors Jahciere Jones, Jordan Smith and Mason Sheehan at wide receiver. Senior defensive lineman Mike Gillen anchors the defense with Ennis. With their lowest win total in 26 year’s last season, there’s nowhere to go but up for Manasquan. A complete overhaul of the program commenced immediately following their loss to Wall on Thanksgiving. They’ll continue to run a multiple offense that will feature Toms River North junior transfer Parker Day, senior Paul Krueger (back from a torn ACL suffered five days before the opener) and sophomore Connor M o r g a n . Returning starter Liam Grieb appears to have won the quarterback battle and will be throwing to Shane Flannagan, Kyle LaBlanc and Damasco Jamie. The offensive line returns three senior starters including Matt McGrady, Dan Mopsick and Rob Hart. McGrady and Hart headline the defensive line with Meyer, Day and Kruegar manning the linebacker spot. Despite losing their star quarterback and wide receiver, Monmouth Regional feels they’ll be a stronger and deeper team this season. Seniors Ely Velez (RB/LB), Matt Mooney (TE/DL), Tyler Gallagher (C/DT), Malik Wiggins (RB/DB), Jodel Bonhometre (OT/DT), Justin Trapp (WR/DB) and Christian Boujaure (WR/DB) with juniors Casey Pachucki (RB/LB), Steward Omar (SS/ WR) and Frank Ashe (RB/DB) all returning with starting and valuable playing time experience. Holmdel has a new coach in former Colts Neck head coach Greg LaCava and new attitude surrounds the program. It may take a little time but LaCava – who turned a 2-8 Colts Neck program into a 10-win program that played in the school’s first ever state final – will turn around the Hornets. This season’s success will rest on the

arm of returning junior quarterback Aneesh Agrawal who had a breakout sophomore season, passing for 1,611 yards and 13 touchdowns. All-Division wide receiver Pete Savrides transferred to IMG Academy leaving seniors Steven Wailer and Will Van Name as Agrawal’s main targets. Senior Matt Nuzzi will start in the backfield and head the linebacking corp and senior Christian Tascione will anchor the offensive line.

CLASS A SOUTH

1) TOMS RIVER NORTH 2) JACKSON MEMORIAL 3) BRICK TOWNSHIP 4) BRICK MEMORIAL 5) TOMS RIVER SOUTH 6) SOUTHERN 7) LACEY 8) TOMS RIVER EAST It is always a heated battle for the top spot and this year will be no different with as many as three legitimate contenders for the division title. See my in-depth preview of the 2015 Toms River North Indians inside this issue. Jackson Memorial won its first state title since 2005 last season but must reload at a number of crucial areas including quarterback, and the interior offensive and defensive lines. But the good news for the Jaguars is that they return two of most talented running backs in the Shore Conference and new starting quarterback Dan Barker has looked outstanding in 7-on-7 summer tournaments and preseason scrimmages. Third team All-Shore running back Vinny Lee (1,025 yards 15 touchdowns) and All-Division back Mike Gawlick (1,165 yards, 7.5 yds/carry, 21 TD’s) form the beat tandem in the Shore and the Jaguars will no doubt lean on them heavily until Barker adjusts to the starting role. Senior WR/DB Kyle Johnson is back after a productive 2014 season on both sides of the ball and is expected to be Barker’s main down-field threat. Returning starting right tackle Dyan Smith (6-foot-3, 290 lbs.) anchors the offensive line while Adante Davis (78 tackles) at linebacker and Austin Ostrander (45 tackles, 5TFL, 3 sacks) and Tyler Towns (65 tackles, 3 TFL, 5 sacks) head up the defensive unit. Brick Township has a new coach in Lenny Zdanowicz who played for legendary Brick coach Warren Wolfe and was an assistant at Brick for 12 years. His first order of business will be replacing star quarterback Carmen Scalfini but fortunately, the Dragons return one of the strongest offensive lines in the Shore where three-year starters Alex Trapasso and Anthony Rusignuolo will anchor a massive offensive line. Junior Jay Obenauer and Joe Scalfini will carry the rock as well as line up at linebacker where Obenauer recorded 38 tackles and 3 TFL last season. Senior Cory Wilson returns to call defensive signals at middle linebacker where he recorded 110 tackles, 14 TFL and 4 sacks last season and should be attracting the attention he was not afforded last season. Another senior who had a tremendous 2014 is Jordan Keefe as hybrid DE/OLB who had 85 tackles, 12 TFL and 5 sacks. Ja’Sir Taylor is back at wide receiver where he was an All-Division pick last season after a 41 catch, 569 yard, 5 TD season. AllDivision senior defensive lineman Dan Finelli (97 tackles, 25 TFL, 10 sacks) is back to lead the defense. Brick Memorial had six wins and a trip to the state playoffs last season and hope to build on that this year. Senior dual-threat quarterback Tim Santiago should take the next step up after a solid 2014 season when he passed for 469 yards and four TD’s and rushed for 791 yards and 13 TD’s in the Mustangs triple option offense. Senior Mike Craft will be his main target and also man the free safety spot where he recorded 62 tackles last season. Senior Elie Lavarin is back at running back with Kishaun Carter. Second team All-Shore defensive tackle Mike Nobile returns to anchor both the offensive and defensive

lines along with his brother Anthony. Toms River South returns All-Division running back/defensive back Khaleel Green after a stellar 2014 season where he ran for 908 yards on only 125 carries for a 7.3 average while registering 83 tackles and three interceptions. Green is a difference maker on both sides of the ball. Senior middle linebacker Jaden Kosh leads the defense after a 2014 season which saw him record 101 tackles. Kosh has thus far been largely underrated but will undoubtedly get more recognition this season. Southern Regional has always been viewed as tough and that perception won’t be changing this year, with six starters returning on the defensive side of the ball led by All-Division middle linebacker Patrick Walker who checked in with 65 tackles, 4 TFL and a sack while also rushing for 673 yards and 8 TD’s and grabbed 16 balls for 200 yards and 2 TD’s. He’s a tremendous two-way player and leader that Southern can build a team around. Sophomore Joe Miele is also back after an impressive freshman campaign, with a recorded 80 tackles, 5 TFL and 4 sacks. Senior Anthony Gagliardi returns to safety after a registered 25 tackles and 5 TFL and will be at one wide receiver spot as well. Senior Doug VandeVelde will anchor the offensive line in his third year as a starter. After a three-win season, Lacy must replace star quarterback Connor Davies who threw for 1,636 yards and 16 TD’s and ran for 344 yards and 2 TD’s last season, for any marked improvement to be seen. Junior Connor Wilson (48120, 2 TD) returns at running back with senior Aaron Boos. Junior Chase Stephensen is back at free safety where he had 71 tackles and is getting looked at for quarterback. Senior Jacob Post returns on the defensive line where he recorded 57 tackles and 7 TFL and could potentially see time as fullback as well. Senior Tarique is back at guard and defensive tackle after registering 33 tackles, 2 TFL and a sack. Toms River East returns two running backs, senior Nick Grande (77-384 yards) and sophomore Tommy Ferrante (53-249 rush) who play free safety and MLB respectively as well. Senior Dylan Savulich will line up behind center and at free safety.

CLASS B NORTH

1) RED BANK CATHOLIC 2) OCEAN TOWNSHIP 3) RED BANK REGIONAL 4) WALL TOWNSHIP 5) LONG BRANCH 6) COLTS NECK 7) NEPTUNE In their second season as a member of Class B North, Red Bank Catholic is again favored to take the division. For an in-depth analysis of the 2015 Caseys see my preview inside this issue. Ocean Township came on strong at the end of last season, going 4-2 down the stretch including a first round upset of No.1 seed Hopewell Valley in the CJGIII playoffs. The 2015 edition of the Spartans will feature one of the most explosive offenses in the Shore Conference both in the air and on the ground. Third team All-Shore senior running back Tyler Thompson is back after gaining 808 yards on the ground with four TD’s

9/8/15 - 9/21/15

even as he fought off injuries the majority of the season. Now healthy, look for Thompson to have a huge year as he returns to form. Junior quarterback Kenny Pickett is back behind center after a breakout sophomore campaign when he threw for 1,438 yards and 14 touchdowns. One of his main targets from a year ago, junior Joey Aldarelli, returns hoping to pick up where he left off when he grabbed 35 balls for 294 yards and two touchdowns. Seniors Quadratuluah Qadri and Grayson Stoothoff will also be targets at wide receiver for Pinkett. The defense will be in good hands with senior linebackers Thomas Saldutti and Tyler Rossback, the two combined for 192 tackles in 2014. The defensive line will be anchored by Chris Vivian and Anthony Tedesco, who recorded 4.5 sacks last season. Vivian, Tedesco and Salduiti will man the offensive line to form the core of the unit. The disappointment Red Bank Regional players felt after missing the state playoffs by four power points last season is still fresh in their minds as enter the 2015 season. This season though, the Bucs look to have enough armor to secure a playoff spot safely before the final cutoff. Syracuse commit Sadiq Palmer is back to make sure of that after making first team All-Shore wide receiver last season with 748 yards on 36 receptions and seven TD’s. He’ll also start at free safety when the Bucs line up on defense. His quarterback, Jack Navitsky also returns after a solid junior season that saw him throw for 1,114 yards and 11 TD’s. Matt Reardon will also be targeted by Navitsky as well as returning to safety where he had 45 tackles and an interception. Seniors Ricky Naiman (50 tackles, 6 sacks) and Rick Wild will anchor both lines of scrimmage and senior Alim Godsey returns at running back and cornerback. With a strong junior class combined with a talented group of seniors, Wall Township hopes to build on the positives of last season – beating Brick Township for one – and keep moving forward. The offense will be led by returning AllDivision quarterback Matt Cluley. As a junior, the senior signal caller passed for 1,080 yards and seven touchdowns and also rushed for 621 yards and nine touchdowns. Senior Sean Larkin is back at running back after missing extended time with a broken collarbone. A trio of wide receivers return including seniors R.J. Janeczek (20-276 TD), Bobby Fletcher (11-202, TD) and junior Shane Richey. Junior Darryl Valme returns to anchor the offensive line. Junior linebacker Matt McKenzie returns to lead the defense after recording five sacks last season. After a 0-8 start last season, Colts Neck made a change and named Darian Barnes interim head coach. Barnes was given the job post season and succeeded in pointing the Cougars in the right direction. Last season ended on a high note – a 28-0 win over Hightstown for their only win of the season – and the Cougars hope to build on that win as they enter the 2015 season. Senior quarterback Max Mullaney is back at t h e helm and hopes to take the next step after a solid season last year when he threw for 846 yards with four TD’s and ran for 486 yards and six touchdowns. Junior running back Carmen Catena returns with a year of experience under his belt, a year in which he ran for 237 yards and a touchdown. Junior Steve Barsky will be in the running back mix and is the front runner for the third linebacker spot after making 25 tackles with one TFL last season. Brothers Nick (114 tackles, 5 sacks) and Vincent Gargiulo (68 tackles, 1 sack) return to head up the linebacking corp and senior Mike Post will anchor the defensive line where he had 14 tackles and two sacks last season. Long Branch is faced with replacing the Shore Conference Player of the Year

Dahmiere Willis and his Shore Conference record 2,544 yards and 27 TD’s. The Green Wave must replace most of their skill players including their quarterback, wide receivers and running backs. They do return three offensive line starters in seniors Joe Jasio and Cameron Hill at guard and Nick Stoia at tackle. Senior Jamar Foster returns at wide receiver after missing all of last year with a knee injury. Junior tailback Keith Cooper has looked good in camp and gets the start at tailback. Senior middle linebacker Brandon Lane returns to lead the defense after recording 94 tackles and three interceptions. He will be joined at linebacker by Stoia who plays on both sides of the ball. Jasio will anchor the defensive line. Neptune returns only three starters in all and looks to be facing a rebuilding year. Three-year starter Isaiah Calhoun returns at wide receiver and defensive back and will provide leadership as well as numbers. Senior King Pugh is back and will start on the defensive line and tight end. Junior Isaiah Mooney will get the bulk of the carries at running back.

Marssaro (23 tackles, 5 sacks). Juniors Toby Alade (24 tackles), Jawan Mitchell (43 tackles, 5 TFL) and Lubintos (94 tackles, 9TFL, Int. All-Division) head up the linebackers, while Lewis will lead in the secondary. The strength of this year ‘s Point Beach team is the offensive line that returns five players who either started or saw extended playing time last season, led by seniors John Wagner, Kevin Barry and Forest Garner and juniors Matt Zuhowski and Cade Watkins. Most the skill positions will see new faces this season including sophomores Luke Frauenheim (QB/RB), John Nista (QB/ RB) and junior running back Declan Conway. Junior Connor Kells will step in at wide receiver. All-Division defensive end Tanner Smith (67 tackles, 6 sacks) returns as the unit leader with Zuhowski and senior Forest Gardner on the line expected to lead as well. Keyport returns a senior core which should bode well for this year’s team, who are hoping to build on last season’s 3-7 record. Senior running back K y ’ S u n Pryor rushed for 614 yards

CLASS B CENTRAL 1) SHORE REGIONAL 2) MATER DEI 3) POINT BEACH 4) KEYPORT 5) ASBURY PARK 6) KEANSBURG

In their third consecutive state final appearance last season Shore Regional finally took home the trophy for their first state championship since 2010 and sixth in program history. The Blue Devils return nine starters on a defense that led the Shore Conference in points allowed with an astonishing 4.3 points per game. They registered six shutouts, including four consecutive blankings during a four-game stretch midseason. They do lose first team AllState linebacker James Bedell’s 146 tackles but return enough to compensate. Senior Doug Goldsmith – in and out of the lineup last season with a knee injury – heads up a vicious linebacking corp along with seniors Devin McLaughlin and All-Division pick Alex Johnson to form the best trio of linebackers in the division. All-Division safety Matt Pennell returns to lead the secondary along with Tyreek McCain while two-way linemen Eric Graham (6-foot-2, 240 lbs.) and Steve Fiiumefreddo (6-foot-0, 285 lbs.) anchor the defensive line. Pennell will take over the quarterback chores this season guiding the always powerful Blue Devil ground assault. Both Goldsmith (806 yards, 8 TD) and McCain (573 yards, 7 TD) were named All-Division running backs last season and will be joined in the backfield by McLaughlin, who filled in for Goldsmith last season, and Johnson, who picked up 318 yards with six touchdowns a year ago. Graham and Fiumefreddo solidify the offensive line. Expect the Blue Devils to go undefeated in division play and make a serious run at another state title. Mater Dei had one of the best seasons in program history last year before a tumultuous off-season that included the real possibility of the school being shuttered and a unexpected coaching change. The school survived and new head coach Shannon Hoadley – a Mater Dei graduate and associate head coach last season – has righted the ship. The biggest obstacle facing the Seraphs this season is replacing the best player in Mater Dei history, Christian Palmer. Sophomore Kyle Devaney gets the nod at starting quarterback this season and so far it’s been a smooth transition. Helping the young quarterback get adjusted will be one of the top deep receiving threats in the Shore, All-Division pick junior Eddie Lewis who hauled in 47 balls for 873 yards and 10 TD’. Sophomore Ryan Mandelbaum will be targeted by Devaney and junior John Lubentos – a fullback last season – is in line for the most carries out of the backfield. The offense and defensive line return ample experience led by junior Shane Mastro and senior Nick

and 7 TD’s last season and is expected to be a work horse this season. Seniors Devon Keegan and Travis Alvarez will anchor the offensive line while senior Desmond Underwood and 6-foot-3 Zach Ochs will be the top receiving threats. Underwood and Ochs will head up the secondary with Pryor, sophomore Jay Hansen and senior Evan Smutz at linebacker. Asbury Park has its fourth head coach in four years in Tim Fosque who is familiar with the program and hopes to finally stabilize things at the school. He’ll be counting on All-Division wide receiver/ safety Jaedon Stephens (35 catches for 690 yards, 7 TD’s), All-Division G/DT Calvin Simmons-Carter and QB/LB Davon Thompson (554 yards passing with 5 TD’s) to lead the team on-andoff the field as players such as seniors RB/DB Trevor Saunders and WR/LB Prince Young and sophomore WR/DB Donte Abrams step up in their roles as well. John Bird takes over the head job at Keansburg this season with high expectations. Senior Arkeyel Brown will start at halfback after making his mark there in the final game of the 2014 season when he gained 101 yards on just three carries including a 75-yard jaunt. Senior Ian Terry is back under center where he passed for 450 yards and three touchdowns last season. The offensive and defensive lines – comprised mostly of the same players – have experience led by senior Dan Bauman and junior Richie Squeo. Sophomore Joey Osterbye will anchor the linebackers and Brown and Danny Vital will head up the secondary.

CLASS B SOUTH

1) CENTRAL REGIONAL 2) BARNEGAT 3) POINT BORO 4) LAKEWOOD 5) JACKSON LIBERTY 6) MANCHESTER 7) DONOVAN CATHOLIC 8) PINELANDS

• Jersey Sporting News

Central Regional put together their best season since 1994 last year tying for the division title and making their first appearance in the state semifinals since that same year. This season they’d like win back-to-back division titles for the first time since their 1970-71 seasons and their first-ever state championship. The Golden Eagles return first team AllShore running back Mike Bickford who came out of nowhere to have one of the best sophomore seasons ever in the Shore Conference when he rushed for an incredible 2,052 yards and 25 touchdowns. Senior All-Division quarterback Mike Miserendino is also back after passing for 780 yards and eight touchdowns while rushing for another 693 yards and seven scores. Seniors Isiah Turner and Matthew Aires appear to be Miserendino’s main targets at wide receiver. All-Division offensive tackle Darius Marrow will anchor the line with juniors Alex Maj and Jonathan Matuska stepping into starting spots this season on the line. Junior Dennis Corbin will block for Bickford again from his fullback spot while leading the defense from his defensive end position opposite Matuska who starts at the other end spot. Bickford lines up at middle linebacker again this season after making 65 tackles and returning an interception for a touchdown. Miserendino is also an outstanding safety who loves to hit after registering 66 tackles last season. Barnegat graduated a strong senior class including two FBS players in Manny Bowen (Penn State) and Sam Madden (Georgia) and quarterback Cinjun Erskine (Bucknell) but still feel they can compete for the division title this season. Despite the losses the Bengals return a core of very talented players and a host of underclassmen ready to step in and contribute. Senior Paul Wickwire – the Ocean County 100-and-200 meter champion – returns and will split his time between running back and wide receiver and according to coach Rob Davis he’s the most explosive kid he’s ever coached. Senior Josh Bowen is a top receiving threat from his tight end spot as well as being a vicious blocker. Senior Nick Camarato will be joined by juniors Jacques Picault and Hunter Mauro at wide receiver. Junior Joe Monaco takes over for Erskine already showing a strong arm and poise in the pocket. Senior Danny Dugan is back to anchor the offensive line from his left tackle position. Five starters return on defense including Dugan, and seniors Joe Scaglione and Greg Schmalz on the defensive line. Bowen is back at linebacker in the middle while Wickwire and Camarato govern the secondary. Jackson Liberty finished 5-5 last season and returns its starting quarterback senior Ryan VanWickle after a solid junior year when he passed for 981 yards and 11 touchdowns. However, it must replace star wide receiver Brett Ribellino. Look for Ken Pommerenke to pick the slack at wide receiver after an excellent year at free safety that saw him record 71 tackles. The defense as a whole must tighten up after giving up 248 points last season. Steven Schuster returns in the secondary where he registered 60 tackles.

Page 9

Point Boro improved by leaps-andbounds last season after winning only one game in 2013 and the Panthers hope to take the next step this season after a five win season a year ago. Point Boro returns eight starters to a defensive unit that allowed only 13.6 points per game. Junior Aiden Connolly and seniors Gavin Hunes and Dom Infante return to anchor the defensive line. Seniors Nate Husak and Jack Cawley are back at linebacker. Seniors Gene Franceschini and Austin Drucquer return in the hybrid linebacker/ safety position. Mike Waddleton is a returning starter at cornerback. The offense returns seven starters including the entire backfield in their flexbone offense formation. Husak is back as the “A” back and Connolly and Franceschini as the slot backs. Noah Husak gets the start at quarterback and will start at safety as well. The offensive line returns two starters in Doug Meslar at left tackle and senior Dominic Infante at center. Waddleton and junior Hayden Frey will man the wide receiver posts. Lakewood took a step back last season posting a disappointing 4-6 record and need to replace quarterback Chappelle Cook, who is now at Temple University. The Piners will lean heavily on returning All-Division RB/DB Amir Tyler, who rushed 816 yards with 11 touchdowns while recording 84 tackles as the leader in the secondary. Tyler has offers from Temple, Syracuse and Pittsburgh as well as multiple FCS schools. Lakewood’s strength appears to be in the trenches where a host of players return on both the offensive and defensive lines including All-Division two-way lineman Elijah Gill (6-foot-3, 270 lbs.) and sophomore Josh Lezin (6-foot-1, 250 lbs.). Tyler is back at free safety and Gill at defensive tackle together they head up the defense that returns six starters with Isiah Calhoun and Adi Palmer back at linebacker. After a one-win season a year ago, Manchester hopes to add a few more wins, but with only seven seniors returning it may be easier said than done. Sophomore Jerry Blackburn is back under center after a year that can only be described as a learning experience. He should be more settled at quarterback, especially with WR/DB Roy Dudley and Luis Perez back as his prime targets and 6-foot-4 Israel Almestica returning at tight end. Senior Mike Rosario returns as starter at running back and two-way lineman Phillip Pender will anchor the offensive line. Almestica at defensive end, Pender at tackle, Rosario at cornerback and Daniel Hourigan in the secondary all return as starters to lead the defense. When you have a winless season there’s only one way to go – up, and Donovan Catholic has plans on doing just that. The team that was young and inexperienced is now much better prepared to compete at the next level. Returning senior David Calderon (RB/DB) is the team leader and will be joined by senior starting quartertback Teddy Golubowski (QB) and Kenny Cushman (LB), Dezmond Hunter (RB/LB), Alex Rosario at slot reciever, Tyler McShea (TE/DL) and Gian Carlo Stigliano ( K / P ) and Dillon Paprota, the lone returner on the offensive line. Pinelands lost most of its skill players and faces a rebuilding year after winning two games in 2014. Senior Will Jenkins (RB/ WR/FS) and juniors David Inman (RB/LB) and David Fairi (RB/ LB) will lead the Wildcats this season.

MANALAPAN BRAVES BUILDING A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE By Tom Malek

The Manalapan Braves enter the 2015 shore conference football season having won five straight division titles, while also reaching the state finals four straight years. Last year, the Braves culminated this stretch by finishing 11-1 and winning the state sectional title against South Brunswick 21-7. Manalapan has won 29 straight conference games, spanning 6 years, the 2009 season in the old American Division being the year of Manalapan’s last loss against Southern Regional. Since 2010 Manalapan over-all record is 51-8. In fact, the last loss for the Manalapan Braves in conference play, current head coach Ed Gurrieri was an assistant under previous head coach Tom Gallahue.

ing able to build an experienced offensive line that averages 6’2” and 260 pounds. Returning at left tackle is senior Jake Levine

pound junior Christian Isabella and 5’10” 215-pound Sophomore Chris Maksimak. At wide receiver senior 6’1” 190 pound Pat-

With all this consistent success over the last five years and with the graduation of Quarterback Dan Anerrella (Pace University) and Running Back Imamu Mayfield, with his close to 2,000 yards rushing and 31 Touchdowns, which lead the state, and having fourteen new starters, the obvious question is can Manalapan continue their tradition of excellence? At Manalapan, they believe that setting high goals should be the standard. When asked, Coach Gurrieri said “Their goals are the same (as in previous years).” Gurrieri believes the strength of this year’s team will be their senior offensive line, which returns four starters and a fifth lineman who started a handful of games last year. His hope is that his veteran linemen will help the learning curve of his youthful and inexperienced players. The Braves are excited with the sophomore class. The Braves offensively will continue with their Pro-I offense, which has produced some explosive offensive numbers over the last five years. The offensive Coordinator Dan Davanzo (2nd Year) is fortunate in be-

(6’4” 270), left guard senior Mitch Trabb (6’1” 225), center senior Anthony Tardgno (6’1” 270), right guard senior Joe Sellmeyer (6’2” 275) and right tackle senior Riley Radosevich (6’4” 260). Hoping to replace Mayfield in the backfield, and find a lot of holes to run through behind that mammoth experienced offensive line will be Senior Marcus Salinus (5’9”175) who saw quite a bit of action last year for the Braves. The quarterback position is a hotly contested battle between three boys Senior Anthony Schirappa, Junior Cody Weiner, and Sophomore Luke Corcione. The Tight End looks to be Sonny Hussein a 6’2” 230-pound senior. The Fullback has two boys 5’9” 195

rick Swaney and senior 5’11” 190-pound Anthony Basanni will be taking the field. The Manalapan Braves behind the playcalling of Dan Davanzo averaged 37.2 points a game during their 2014 A-North and State Sectional Title run. The Braves will continue to run their 3-4 defense behind defensive coordinator Justin Fumando (5 years). The Braves have the reputation of being a physical unit, a view that was supported during their championship run last year that didn’t change as the Braves gave up only 12.5 points a game. Coach Fumando has to replace 8 starters from last year’s team. On the de-

fensive line the Braves will be counting on 5’10”, 260-pound junior Mike Cardinal to man the nose tackle position. The Defensive Ends will be Riley Radosevich and 6’0” 215-pound senior Mark Figueroa. The braves will man one inside linebacker spot with 5’10” 215-pound senior Lee Maksimak. The other inside linebacker will be a battle between 5’9” 185 pound senior Dan Park and Christian Isabella. The outside linebackers will have a two way battle at one spot with senior 5’10” 195-pound Connor Flynn and 6’4” 200-pound L.J. Holder. The other outside linebacker should be junior 6’3” 200-pound John Pimengel. The four deep secondary positions will be filled by 5’8” 160-pound senior Dave Bloomberg and 6’0” senior T.J. Oricco at the corners. At safety Senior Anthony Basanni will man one safety spot and the other safety spot will be a battle between seniors Chris Carnesi and Cody Weiner. The special teams coordinated by Coach Dom Lapore (former Head Coach Freehold Township) will consist of Cody Wiener and sophomore Dave Gelb competing for the kicking and punting duties. Both boys have a very strong leg and hope to aid the offense and defense by setting up field position. Coach Gurrieri team opens up their schedule with a much-improved Marlboro squad. Coach Gurrieri hopes when the year ends their high expectations will be met, and feels that A-North will be a tough division considering you have one of the best teams in the shore, Middletown South and a team with possibly the best two players in the division on one team Middletown North along with Freehold Boro on their conference schedule. All the off-season work is done and now it’s time to see what the 2015 season will have in store for the Manalapan Braves.

BRICK GREEN DRAGONS LOOKING TO CONTINUE THE TRADITION By Tom Malek

A new era has dawned for the Brick Township Green under head Coach Lenny Zdanowicz. Brick has put itself back on the shore conference radar over the last two years winning an A-South title last year and a state sectional title in 2013. Coach Zdanowicz is only the fourth head football coach in Brick Green Dragons history, which dates back to 1958. Coach Zdanowicz hopes to keep the success going. Zdanowicz, a longtime assistant for many of those years at Brick, then at Jackson Liberty and last year Lakewood High School, hopes to keep that success going. He spent many of those years under legendary head coach Warren Wolf. Coach Zdanowicz came through the Brick program and, as he stated, being coached by and with Coach Wolf, Coach Tim Osborne, Coach Kevin Campbell and countless others he is thrilled and privileged to be appointed head coach – his dream job come true. Brick comes off a season where they finished 9-2, winning the A-South title and reaching the state sectional final. Coach Zdanowicz was not appointed the head coaching job until May 30th, but he feels he has put together a quality staff. The offensive coordinator will be the longtime head coach Fred Sprengel, who’s last job was at rival Brick Memorial where his multi-I offenses were consistently one of the hardest to defend, and now takes over an offense that averages 35 points a game last year. He will have the task of replacing two very key ingredients to the Brick offensive success in Quarterback Carmen Scalfani and Running Back Ray Fattaruso.

On offense the Dragons have two three year starters returning on the offensive line in senior Alex Trapasso, who will handle the center position and senior Tyler Colonno will be one of the offensive tackles. Another lineman who saw some playing time last year will be senior guard Anthony Rusignnuolo. At running back, the Brick Green Dragons will have senior Jay Obenaeur and Junior Rahsond McCall fighting for playing time. Returning starter Junior Jasir Taylor, who is getting contacted by some division I schools, will fill the position on wide receiver. The other two receivers in Brick’s plans are seniors Javon Harris and Mat Schliefer. The Quarterback position is a battle between senior Tom Zbranak and junior John Prato. Javon Harris will be handling the place-kicking duties for the team. Defensively, Brick will continue the 4-3 defense that they have run under defensive coordinator Brian McNamara. Last year under McNamara, Brick gave up 14.6 points per game. Coach McNamara defensive units are always physical and well-disciplined. On the defensive line they will be anchored by Defensive end Senior Jordan Keefe who is getting some interest from some FCS colleges. Three year starter, senior Dan Finelli, will man one defensive tackle position and his brother Jack Finelli, a junior, will handle the other. At middle linebacker, returning starter Senior Cory Wilson will lead the unit. The outside linebackers will be Junior Dean Helstowski and Senior Tom Koepplinger. The secondary will be an entirely new unit from last year’s. John Prato will be one safety. Senior Octavian Battle will man the other safety posi-

tion. The corners will be Mat Schliefer at one spot, while Jasir Taylor and Javon Harris will compete for playing time at the other corner spot. Javon Harris will be handling the punting duties. Coach Zdanowicz feels the strength of his team will be with his strong senior class, of which there are 22

players. He also feels his experience in the offensive and defensive lines will help lead a team that returns 12 starters. Returning to coach on the Brick sidelines, Zdanowicz hopes to build up the youth levels and create as much opportunity for playing time as possible for the 68 boys out from 10th -12th grades and the 37 freshman on the team.

THIRD YEAR MAY BE THE CHARM FOR STACKED TOMS RIVER NORTH By Mike Ready

TOMS RIVER – After a one-win season in head coach Dave Oizerowitz’s first year at the helm at Toms River North in 2013, the Mariners improved to 6-5 last season, including a trip to the NJSIAA South Jersey Group V playoffs which saw them defeat No.1 seed Lenape in the first round before bowing out in the semifinals.

There’s a battle for the third wide receiver spot between junior Kenny Cook – the fastest of the three – and sophomore Andrew Daniluk, another speedster who has looked awfully good. Senior Ricky Carberry is considered a jack of all trades. He’s a return specialist but will see time at wide out as well; he’s one of the fastest guys in the county according to Oizerowitz.

This season the Mariners appear primed to make another significant leap, but this time as one of the Shore Conference elite teams.

When the Mariners do lineup in a tight end formation it will be seniors Quintin Manning and inside linebacker/ TE Calvin Jackson.

“Our expectations are pretty high,” Oizerowitz said. “We’d like to get back into the mix of contending for a division title and getting back into the tournament; those are our goals right now.” They return most of their offense that produced over 4,200 yards of total offense last season, including an AllShore quarterback that was one of only three Shore Conference QB’s to throw and run for over a thousand yards, huge offensive linemen that are not only strong as bulls but also extremely athletically gifted and an assortment of skill players that have the ability to take over games. Gifted junior quarterback Mike Husni - a second team All-Shore selection – returns after throwing for 1,289 yards and 12 touchdowns while running for

an additional 1,387 with 12 TD’s. With the weapon’s Husni has at his disposal, his off-season workout ethic and his maturation process, the sky is the limit for this ultra-talented young signal caller. “Mike exceeded our expectations last year,” Oizerowitz said. “He’s a dynamic force with the football in his hands. In our spread he’s our point guard who distributes the football but he also has to make the plays when the plays are

there and he’s able to do that for us. He’s as competitive a guy that I’ve ever been around.” Senior RB/DB/SB Asante Moorer was a third team All-Shore performer last season after rushing for 1,064 yards and scoring nine touchdowns while gaining 284 yards on 16 receptions out of the slot receiver spot with three touchdowns and is expected to carry the load at running back. Sophomore RB/OLB Daryn Blackwell will be the first

option out of the backfield after Moorer and has impressed in preseason. Husni has a couple of options at wide receiver that return with significant playing experience. Juniors Bryce Watts (24-284 2 TD, 106 yds. rush, TD) and Darron Carrington (16-284 2 TD) will be Husni’s main targets. Oizerowitz is expecting them to be the best two playmakers on the perimeter in the division, if not the Shore this season.

The offensive line is the heart-andsoul of the team according to Oizerowitz, who feels the offensive line is the strength of the team. Seniors Luke Butera (6-foot-3, 265 lb.) at guard and Tim Peterson (6-foot-1, 250 lb.) at tackle along with juniors Esiah Santamia (6-foot, 260 lb.) at guard, Cole LaBatch (6-foot-3, 280 lb.) tackle and Will Sagarese (5-foot11, 200 lb.) at center will all be up front. Junior Matt Melamed (6-foot-4, 260 lb.) has played well in preseason and is fighting for playing time. Senior defensive tackle Da’Shon Copes is the defensive leader after a season which saw him garner one award after another, including first team All-Shore selections from the Asbury Park Press, Shore Sports Network and Star Ledger. He recorded 91 tackles/ 22 for a loss while registering 12 sacks – third in the Shore Conference. “Our defense is built around Copes,” Oizerowitz said. “He’s a three year starter and fantastic football player that dominates in the middle.”

Copes will anchor a defensive line on the week side and opposite him on the strong side will be LaBatch (36 tackles, 3 TFL, 2 sacks). At nose tackle there’s a battle between junior Joe Nardoza (6-foot,260 lb.) and sophomore Shane Carney (5-foot10, 280 lb.) with both showing promising signs. The line backing corps is headed by All-Division strong side outside linebacker Christian Lynch. The senior returns to his starting role after recording 62 tackles with 12.5 tackle for a loss. Opposite Lynch on the weak side there’s competition between seniors Tom Donovan and Anthony Storino. Back at inside linebacker is senior Calvin Jackson (6-foot-0, 225 lb.) who stabilized the position after gaining the start there at midseason. Next to Jackson it’s between senior Michael Cangialosi (23 tackles), junior Pete Laquaglia and senior Rich Roma. Senior Matt Tomaschek returns to head up a secondary loaded with talent infused with a ton of pure athletic ability as well as experience. Tomaschek registered 53 tackles from his safety spot along with five passes defended and one interception. Watts (19 tackles) and Carrington (12 tackles, Int.) are back at cornerback and Moorer will do double duty at safety – a position he’s come to love. Daniluk, Janaire Bradley and Kayin Dacruz are pushing for time as well. “Watts is big and fast,” Oizerowitz said. “I think he’s one of the best corners in the Shore Conference. He plays the run, he plays man, he plays zone; we really like him there.” The Shore Conference Class A South title is up for grabs this season – there is no definitive favorite. If the Mariners can play consistent football, meaning, they win the games they’re supposed to win and play up to their capabilities against the likes of Brick Township and Jackson Memorial they have a realistic chance of not only winning the division title but finishing as a top five team in the Shore Conference. “We try to create the environment that will allow them to be successful,” Oizerowitz said. “But ultimately they will determine it. We try to shape it and nurture it but they have to determine it.”

AS USUAL, RED BANK CATHOLIC LOOKS TO BE THE CLASS OF THE SHORE By Mike Ready

RED BANK – Last year’s Casey team accomplished what no other Red Bank Catholic team had been able to pull off in an exasperating 38-year span. You could even say that the monkey was finally ripped off their backs, as the Caseys brought home the program’s first state championship since 1976. However, there’s no time to rest on its laurels for this program as the Caseys prepare for the upcoming season with a bit of a chip on its shoulder and something still to prove. For the first time since the 2010 season the Caseys were not voted the No.1 team in the Shore Conference’s final top ten rankings. Their loss to Jackson Memorial a month earlier had snapped their 40-game Shore Conference winning streak while also propelling the Jaguars to a state title of their own and the eventual No.1 spot. “A day doesn’t go by that we don’t remember that game,” first team All-Shore offensive tackle and Duke University commit Liam Smith said. “We’re not the No.1 team in the Shore Conference and we’re not happy about that. We’re determined not to let that happen this year.” The Caseys can take matters into their own hands with Jackson Memorial traveling to Count Basie Field for the final game of the regular season. A lot can happen between now and then, but the game has the potential for major implications not only as a revenge factor but in rankings and playoff positioning.

As senior quarterback Eddie Hahn goes, the Caseys go. Hahn – a University of Connecticut commit - had a season for the ages last year as he was named Shore Conference Player of the Year and first team All-State by the Star Ledger as well as first team All-Shore by the Asbury Park Press. He’s a dual threat sensation that passed for 1,485 yards and 20 touchdowns while rushing for an additional 531 yards 12 touchdowns. In the Caseys championship win, he was 9-of-10 for 234 yards with a 52yard scoring strike while rushing for an additional 47 yards including a 15-yard touchdown scamper.

outstanding returners in left tackle Liam Smith (6-foot-5, 285 lb.) and left guard Ryan Oneidas (6-foot-4, 280 lb.). At center will be Tommy Clark (6-foot-1, 255 lb.), senior Charlie Gargiulo (6-foot-3, 215 lb.) gets the nod at right tackle and junior Connor Moore (6-foot-3, 235 lb.) and sophomore’s Bren-

Wide receiver is another position where there will be a lot of new faces. However, if there’s one thing the Casey program has always been able to do successfully year-afteryear is reload. Their depth has always been outstanding that allows them to plug in one player after another with positive results.

“Eddie had improved greatly,” head coach Jim Portella said. “His arm strength has always been good but it’s gotten a lot stronger. His confidence level with our offense is off the charts and it has allowed us to install a lot more. He’s going to have an excellent year.” Unfortunately, Hahn was injured in the Caseys first scrimmage and underwent a minor procedure for a torn meniscus. He’s not expected to miss more than a couple games and should be as good as new when he does return. To protect Hahn, the Caseys must replace three starters on the offensive line to complement their two

tailback this season and he’ll team with senior Mike Wilen (6-foot-2, 215 lb.) who picked up 193 yards and two touchdowns last season. These are two big, strong backs that can run over you as well as around you with deceptive speed. Sophomore Zack Blair and Nick Brusca along with senior Anthony Purge will back up. Blair is a Holmdel transfer so he’ll sit out 30 days.

don Dente (6-foot-2, 255 lb.) and Alex Sargis (6-foot-3, 280 lb.) are in a battle for the right guard spot. “The line is starting to jell, we’re looking better every week,” Smith said. “Everyone’s learning their assignments and doing it with the tenacity and aggressiveness we like to do.” Senior Dylan Murphy (6-foot-0, 210 lb.) moves from fullback to

“This team had a lot of potential,” head coach Jim Portela said. “We’ve always been a deep program and this year is no different. With the schedule we play year-in-and year-out, we need to go two or three deep.” Seniors Mike Balzofiore, Dan Lukawski, and junior Matt Hazard will be the starters with sophomore Matt Ansell – who’s looking good in practice – getting plenty of playing time. Sophomore Connor Smith (6-foot-4, 220 lb.) will be a big target for Hahn at tight end.

Defensively, the Caseys have the potential to be fearsome. The defensive front is big, strong and mean. Smith and Oneidas will be at tackle with Gargiulo at one end spot and junior Nasir Darnell (6-foot-4, 235 lb.) on the opposite side at end. Senior Christian Foley at end, Strugis, Clark, Dente and sophomore Michael Griggs (6-foot-3, 250 lb.) will all be in the defensive line rotation. Murphy returns at linebacker where he was a third team AllShore selection after recording a whopping 110 tackles, 2 TFL, 3 sacks. Wilen also returns at linebacker where he registered 44 tackles and a sack. Senior Joey Hagan will man the middle after seeing limited time last season and senior Liam McArdle is in the mix as well. The secondary is solid with Hahn and senior Colin Shaughnessy both back at safety. Hahn had 2 Int., 32 tackles, 12 PD and 2 TFL while Shaughnessy recorded 23 tackles and 2 Int. Balzofiore and Lukawski will line up at the cornerback spots with plenty of experience under their belts. Lukawski had 16 tackles and an Int. while Balzofiore defended 7 passes with 14 tackles. “Heading into this season is no different just because we won last year,” Portella said. “Every season is a season in of itself. We think we have the right pieces, we just got to figure out where they go.”

Blue Devils Look To Repeat as State Champions By Michael Rogers

The Shore Regional High School football team has a long history of being a hard working well coached football team. After reaching the NJSIAA Group I State Title two years in a row (2012 and 2013) and coming up short in the finals, last season the Blue Devils defeated South Hunterdon 42-12 in the group I final earning Head Coach Mark Costantino's third state final and the school its sixth. Over the last three seasons Shore has a record of 30 wins and only 6 losses. After an 11 win and 1 loss season in 2014, this year they will be looking for a repeat of their successes. Coach Costantino has a career record of 178 wins and only 94 losses in his 23 years as head coach of the Blue Devils. He was also recently inducted into the Shore Football Coaches Foundation hall of fame at this season’s Gridiron Classic for his 27 years of coaching (he was an assistant for four years before becoming head coach at Shore Regional). Last season ended with a dominating fashion with a 42 to 14 championship win and this year’s team, with five returning starters on offense and nine on defense, is working hard toward accepting nothing less than another championship state title. During the course of a conversation with Costantino, the coach said that "the players are continuing to work hard and doing the work necessary in the off season such as lifting and conditioning to put themselves in a position to compete for another title." With a solid core of players returning on both sides of the ball and the addition of some new talent the Blue Devils are very focused on winning back to back titles. The defense last season was tremendous, only giving up 5.08 points per game – the best in the whole state of New Jersey and that defense returns nine players to this year’s team. The defense also posted six shutouts last season. Starting with the defensive line is 6'2" and 240 pound senior captain Erik Graham and 6'0" 285 pound Senior Steve Feumefreddo along with senior Jeremy Radielli (5'10" and 205 pounds) at defensive end and Senior Kyle Grogan at defensive tackle – forming a very solid front four. Junior Mike Devine will also rotate at defensive tackle. Despite losing James Bedell, Shore does return senior linebacker captain Doug Goldsmith, senior captain Connor Rempel at inside linebacker, and senior Alex Johnson and senior Devin McGlaughlin as outside linebackers. The secondary returns senior Jack Britton (3 Ints.

POWERFUL MATAWAN HAS THE TALENT TO COMPETE FOR SECOND STRAIGHT TITLE By Mike Ready MATAWAN – After losing their first two games of the season last year by a combined score of 62-20, the Matawan Huskies won eight of their next 10 games including a five game season-ending run that led them to the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III championship.

Lancers Have New Coach to Continue Success By Michael Rogers

MIDDLETOWN SOUTH HOPES TO END CHAMPIONSHIP DROUGHT IN 2015 By Mike Ready

MIDDLETOWN – Middletown South has won nine state titles – second in the Shore Conference history. They’ve been to the state playoffs 25 times in program history – making a remarkable 19 trips the finals. They are considered one of the elite football programs in the state and year-in-and-year-out are ranked in the top ten of the Shore Conference, which coincidently swept all five NJSIAA Central Jersey groups in last year’s state playoffs. However, the Eagles have hit a little bit of a bump in the road since their last state title in 2006 – their third-ofthree consecutive championships. Although they’ve been to the playoffs every year since 2006 and have made the finals in five of those years, they just haven’t been able to “finish the job” as head coach Steve Antonucci likes to describe it. Of those five losses in the finals, four have come by seven points or less but none have been more agonizing than last season’s last second loss to Jackson Memorial when they came all the way back from a 18-point deficit and had the ball with a chance to win it.

The St John Vianney High School football team is coming off of a very successful season winning 10 games while only losing one and reaching the NJSIAA Non Public Group III semi-finals to Delbarton by a score of 38 to 26. With a lot of talent coming back to the Lancers they will also have a new head-coach in Derek Sininsky, who has coached at Raritan High School and Monmouth Regional High School. Sininsky comes in the wake of Mark Ciccotelli stepping down from the head coaching job after just one season. The transition was made smoother than it could have been due to the fact that some of the coaches on Ciccotelli's staff stayed on Sininsky's staff. Offensive Coordinator Jim Reid and Defensive Coordinator Mike Tedwschi stayed on as well as Special Teams coach Eddie Hernandez. Sininsky had this to say of the transition, "We are taking things day by day and trying to take steps forward every single day. This is a very talented group and I can see we are becoming more and more of a team every single day in practice." On offense there is a lot of talent returning starting with quarterback Senior Anthony Brown who was selected on the All Shore first team last season (and is a Boston College recruit this season), after throwing for 2000 yards last season and 26 touchdown passes. Brown also rushed for 800 yards and ran for another 9 touchdowns. The offense last season averaged 43 points per game and when asked about the upcoming season Brown said, "We are more mature as a group this season. Everyone is focused on winning without letting individual accomplishments distract us from what we want to accomplish as a team." One of Brown's favorite targets when he throws the ball this season will be Junior Khaul Haskins, who at 6'2", caught 26 passes for 400 yards with two touchdowns last season. Haskins also rushed for 556 yards and scored another 6 touchdowns rushing the football. The dynamic player also returns punts and kicks, scoring two touchdowns in the return game last season. Brown will have two other receivers at his disposal in 6'6" Mike Stappert who returns as a nice big target to throw to and 6'6" transfer (from Neptune) Marque Ellington who will

JACKSON MEMORIAL IN A RUSH FOR TITLE REPEAT By Mike Ready

JACKSON - Jackson Memorial captured its first state title since 2005 last season and the Jaguars feel they have enough left in the tank to make another run. As is the case most years in high school football there are significant holes the Jaguars must fill if they plan on making a second straight run at the state title. They must replace All-Division quarterback Joe DeMaio, most the offensive line, their interior defensive line and a couple of starting linebackers. They do return five high-end starters on both sides of the ball with most expected to

no doubt contribute right off the bat. Jeff Heard also returns as the slot receiver for St. John Vianney. The defense also retained some very talented players and will be returning to a more conventional 4-3-4 defense alignment replacing the 3-35 stack defense the Lancers ran last season when they only gave up 16.4 points per game. Coach Sininsky said this about his defense, "We are very fast defensively and we are also very big up front so as a team we are looking to be very good defensively this season. We are always looking to improve on fundamentals, skills, and tackling." The defensive line is very strong and very big with All Division lineman Micah Clark who returns along with Jamaal Beaty, Matt Bordfeld and Mike McGimpsey. The linebackers will be another strength for the defense as Calvin Beaty, the All Shore Second team selection last season returns, while recording 6.5 sacks along with a lot of tackles. Along with Beaty is linebacker Tyler Tedeschi who recorded 8.5 sacks last season. Another linebacker returning is Jeff Sheard who is coming off an excellent season last year. The secondary is also fast and strong and are led by Haskins who recorded 6 interceptions last season. Chris Chuckwuneke transferred from J.P. Stevens where he played safety (he was also a 1000 yard rusher while playing for J.P. Stevens last season). The kicking game is also experienced as Senior Joe Rice returns after scoring 73 points last season on making 61 of 65 extra points and 4 of 7 field goals with a long field goal of 41 yards. Overall, the Lancers are a talented, experienced and hungry team that is looking to have another successful season and new head-coach Derek Sininsky sees his team’s potential and said, "Day by day we are making steps forward. This is a very talented group and we are becoming more and more of a team everyday." The Lancers open the season with two division games, the first at Matawan High School before opening up their home season with Holmdel High School in game number two.

go both ways this season, and a nucleus of young talent that includes players off their J.V. teams that have had back-to-back 9-0 seasons. However, for the 2015 Jaguars it’s not who they don’t have, but what who do have. And who they do have is the best running back tandem in the Shore Conference.

“To be honest, we haven’t brought it up,” Antonucci said. “We’re focused on what’s in front of us and ready to take the next step.” Returning eight starters both on offense and defense should go a long way in taking the next step. That, and a group of talented young players waiting in the wings as the “next man up” to fill some holes should help their chances of getting over the hump. Depth has never been an issue for the Eagles, who yearafter-year possess the uncanny ability to replace graduated seniors from a stockpile of underclassmen that never seem to miss a beat. A sophomore class that went undefeated and unscored upon last season as freshman is a prime example and many from that class will see extended playing time at the varsity level this season. The Eagles offense will again feature second team AllShore running back Cole Rogers who ran over-andaround opposing defenses last season when he picked up a 1,867 yards on the ground (7.8 yds. / carry) while scoring 27 touchdowns – good for second in the Shore Conference. He’ll be joined in the backfield again this season by junior James McCarthy, who rushed for 351 yards (5.5 yds. / carry) and five touchdowns. Senior Eddie Pinto and junior Joe Pignataro will get some work spelling the starters after seeing limited time in the backfield last season. Junior Kevin Higgins gets the nod as starting fullback. Matt Mosquera returns as starting quarterback after a solid junior campaign where he effectively managed the game and became a more productive passer as the season wore on. He did throw for 1,240 yards on 100of-186 passing but his touchdowns-to-interception ratio needs to improve after throwing for five touchdowns while tossing seven interceptions. Mosquera, who also handled the kicking duties last season, was named first team All-Shore is considered one of the top kicking specialist in the state. “I feel we’re further along this year than last year at this time because we’ve got so many guys back,” Mosquera said. “We already have knowledge of the playbook and we’re looking real good so far. We had a young receiving

very good 7-on-7 season this summer and needs to take the next step now with live competition. We need him to take care of the football and limit mistakes. He does have a very strong arm and outside the numbers he throws the ball downfield very well. He needs to continue to show progress and be smart with the football.”

Back is third team All-Shore selection Vinny Lee who ran for 1,025 yards and 15 TD’s and his running mate Mike Gawlik. Gawlik – an All-Division pick had a tremendous sophomore season which saw him torch opposing defenses to the tune of 1,165 yards and 21 TD’s. In the Jaguars championship win against Middletown South Gawlik ran for a game-high 159 yards, including a 55-yard touchdown run.

Senior quarterback Dan Barker steps in for DeMaio and so far it’s been a smooth transition. “Right now all Dan needs to do is manage the team,” Krystopik said. “He had a

Junior quarterback Brendan Donlon has looked good in preseason and will back up Mosquera. Back at wide receiver are seniors Tom Coffey, Spencer Peerless and Tom Marron. Coffey led the trio with 21 catches for 389 yards and three touchdowns while Peerless had 18 receptions for 185 yards and Marron chipped in with 213 receiving yards on 13 catches. Juniors Maxx Imsho and Jeff Lewandowski will be the first two off the bench with juniors Brian Higgins and Danny Diodato pressing for playing time. Unfortunately, Pereless injured his clavicle in a scrimmage Friday and could be lost for six to eight weeks but the Eagles are deep enough at the position where they should be fine until Pereless returns. The offensive line brings back three starters from last year’s stellar line who paved the way for Roger’s breakout year. Senior center Joe Rutkowski (6-foot-3, 270 lbs.), junior Mike Wilson (6-foot-4, 285 lbs.) and senior tackle Tom Lopez (6-foot-5, 280 lbs.) will anchor a line that will also start junior Will Gulick (6foot-1, 230 lbs.) and senior Drew Chatfield (6-foot-4, 250 lbs.) at guard. Junior Mike Walsh (6-foot1, 245 lbs.) and sophomore’s Frankie Settembrino (5-foot-10, 235 lbs.) and Adam Markman (6-foot-0, 220 lbs.) are all expected to see ample playing time. Defensively, the linebackers are the heart-and-soul of a defensive unit that broke a school record last season by shutting out six different opponents while giving up only an average of 8.3 points a game. Back are second team All-Shore linebackers Dylan Rogers in the middle and James McCarthy on the outside as a rover. Rogers was seventh in the Shore Conference with 122 tackles, including 23 tackles in the championship game when he played like a man possessed. McCarthy checked in with 66 tackles and four sacks. Junior Kevin Higgins also returns as a starter with experienced senior Rob Hulse and sophomore Jake Krellin pushing for playing time. The defensive line must replace two All-Division players in Pat Crowe and Dan Servidio but they do return All-Division pick Will Gulick at tackle. Juniors Bobby Burke (6foot-1, 240 lbs.) and Ethan D’Arcy (6-foot-4, 195 lbs.), seniors Donald jack Urhig (5-foot-10, 200 lbs.) and Kyle Cuccia (5-foot-11, 220 lbs.) and sophomores Joe Raim (6-foot-2, 195 lbs.) and Markmann are fighting for starting spots in the defensive line rotation. Pereless will be missed in the defensive secondary as well but Cole Rogers will be back at one cornerback spot with Coffey at the other. Imsho gets the start at safety and it now looks like juniors Samson Dube and Lewandowski will battle for Pereless’ spot. Pignataro, Higgins, Marron and Matt Salico are in the mix as well. On paper Middletown South is in the top three of the Shore Conference and a top 25 team in the state. Now it’s time to prove it.

“Kyle’s a vertical threat on every play,” Krystopik said. “That’s key for us having Kyle on the outside with teams will having to respect him and double up on him. They won’t be able to load the box on us to stop the run. If we get a one-on-one on Kyle we’ll take a shot downfield to get teams to play us honest. We’ll be leaning him and the two running backs to take some of the pressure of Barker.” Returning starting right tackle Dylan Smith (6-foot-3, 290 lb.) will anchor the offensive line and he’ll be joined by junior Sean Martin at right guard, senior Austin Ostrander (5-foot-9,230) at center, junior Larry Richardson (6-foot0, 225 lb.) at left guard and junior Mills (6-foot-2, 240 lb.) at left tackle. Senior Chris Mondello (6-foot-1, 250 lb.) is out with a dislocated knee but is expected back and will be in the offensive line mix along with 6-foot-1, 230 lb. sophomore guard Joe Hurle and 5-foot-11, 270 lb. sophomore Devin Martinez.

It’s a two-headed monster no team in the Shore Conference is going to want to face. They both have the ability to break it from anywhere on the field and they just wear opponents down. They’re fast, strong and tough as nails and a nightmare for opposing teams. “We’re going to be leaning heavily on those guys,” 2014 Shore Conference Coach of the Year Walk Krystopik said. “They’re both tremendous backs that have the ability to take over a game.”

corp last year and their all back and are good receiving threats so we plan on passing more this year.”

Barker’s main target will be downfield threat Kyle Johnson, who hauled in 16 balls for 364 yards and two touchdowns last season as a junior. Seniors Jared Calhoun and Kyle Lona will be Barker’s second and third options in their first year as starters. Senior Tyler Towns, a two way starter, gets the nod at tight end when he’s not manning his defensive end position.

Townes and Smith at defensive tackle anchor the defensive line which will include senior Nick D’Amore opposite Townes at the other end position and Ostrander at tackle next to Smith to complete a very formidable defensive front. Mondello will be in the rotation once he healthy. Last season, Townes registered 65 tackles, three TFL and five sacks while Ostrander recorded 45 tackles, five TFL and three sacks. Asante Davis returns to lead the line backing corps after a stellar junior campaign which

saw him collect 78 total tackles and two TFL. Senior Nick Papandrea and junior Zack Lubertazzi get the start next to Davis after seeing considerable playing time last season as backups. Papandrea had 24 tackles, 2 TFL and a caused fumble to his credit while Lubertazzi recorded 32 tackle, 3 TFL and a sack. Senior Connor Testa will back up the starters. The defensive backfield may be one of the best in the Shore Conference with both Gawlik and Johnson back at safety. Gawlik had an eye-popping 106 tackles and 3 TFL from strong safety last season while Johnson recorded 47 tackles with two interceptions from free safety. Lee gets the start at one cornerback spot after seeing limited time there last season and Calhoun gets the start at corner opposite Lee. Lona will fill in at both safety and cornerback. The offensive line has looked solid in preseason and is beginning to jell. If Barker can keep defenses honest by throwing the ball down field preventing teams from putting eight in the box to stop Gawlik and Lee the offense may be unstoppable. The defense is already one of the top in A South and will just keep getting better. Combine the two and you have a recipe for repeat. “We need a day-in-and-day-out effort to get better for us to have any chance to repeat,” Krystopik said. “We know the challenge we have in front of us competing in A South. Every week we’re going to face a quality opponent and outside our division we have RBC. We know week-in-and-week-out the team has to come and compete.”
