LOADED RED BANK CATHOLIC SHOULD DO SOME DAMAGE IN SHORE CONFERENCE by Mike Ready
RED BANK – Red Bank Catholic –ranked No. 11 in the NJ.com preseason top 20 and No. 2 in the Shore –enters the 2016 season as the odds on favorite to win the Shore Conference Class B North title in a battle with Colts Neck, Wall and Ocean. They are one of only two or three teams that have an outside shot at challenging Christian Brothers Academy as the No. 1 team in the Shore Conference. The Caseys return six position starters with a ton of speed and power and three senior pitchers who combined logged 127.4 innings pitched and recorded a collective 2.82 ERA with a 14-6 record. A year ago Red Bank Catholic went 20-9 reaching the Shore Conference Tournament final losing 4-0 to CBA. They lost an extra-inning game to Manalapan in the quarterfinals of the Monmouth County Tournament and had a disappointing 5-1 loss to No. 6 seed Bishop Eustace in the South, Non-Public A state quarterfinals as the threeseed. “We haven’t won anything in the past two years,” senior Evan Madigan said. “We’ve lost two years in a row to CBA in the SCT final and it would be nice to beat our rivals.” Greener pastures lay ahead for this ultra-talented Casey ball club this season as its core of returning starters should take them to new heights. In the infield the Caseys return four of five starters and are moving a fifth of those five to the outfield. Madigan, who leads off and plays shortstop, is a first team All-Shore pick and prototype leadoff hitter. The Bucknell University commit banged out 46 hits a year ago –good for second in the Shore– and his .451 batting average led all Caseys hitters. He had an OBP .504 with eight doubles, three triples and 31 runs scored –fifth in the Shore. Returning centerfielder Dom Carabollo is penciled in at the No. 2 spot in the order and is coming off a season which saw him hit .338 with a .430 OBP along with 13 runs scored, eight stolen bases and 14 RBI’s. Batting third is junior Aaron Ahn who is making the switch from third to
his more natural position second base this year after hitting .405 with a .505 OBP and 1.163 OPS while scoring 27 runs and driving in 27. In the cleanup spot and catching is senior Doug Facendo, one of the more talented defensive catchers in the Shore, as well as top threat at the plate. Facendo hit .286 last season with six doubles, four triples and 23 RBI’s. Junior third baseman Anthony DeRosa comes over from first base this year and will bat fifth in the lineup after a breakout sophomore year at the plate which saw him hit .438 with a .515 OBP and team-leading 1.168 OPS while knocking in 23 runs, with six double, four triples and one home run. Senior Mike Spinelli moves to right field from second base this season where he’ll highlight his defense and arm in the outfield and bats sixth.
Spinelli averaged .342 at the plate while scoring 17 runs and driving in 16 with six stolen bases. Junior Mike Veit takes over at first base and will bat seventh after seeing limited playing time a year ago while firstyear starting seniors Suli Abas and Frank Buono will be in left field and bat eighth and at designated hitter and bat ninth respectively. Seniors Connor Caizza (OF), Pat Leonard (OF), Kevin Freibott (OF) and juniors Steve Turk (2B/3B), Brian Sheehy (1B), Aiden Supp (2B/ SS) and Eddie Barnwell (C) will provide depth off the bench with an occasional start. The trio of returning senior pitchers headline the Caseys rotation including righty John Poccia (49.2 IP, 50 H, 13 BB, 31 K, 1.55 ERA, 5-2), righty Jack Ipsen (36.1 IP, 40 H, 14 BB, 35 K, 3.28 ERA, 4-2) and lefty Justin Liggett (42.1 IP, 46 H, 28 BB, 35 K, 3.64 ERA, 5-2). Although none of the three could be classified as overwhelming power pitchers, all three have big-game experience, throw strikes, are smart and know how to get hitters out. Possessing a wicked sidearm delivery, Ipsen may move to the bullpen as the top man. Casey head coach Buddy Hausmann likes the idea of giving hitters a different look when Ipsen enters the game with his sidearm motion. Senior Jack Smith (8 2/3 shutout innings a year ago) and sophomore Austin Nappi look to have the front track when it comes to replacing Ipsen in the starting rotation if in fact he does move to the pen. Two more sophomores, Jake Birnbaum and Blaise Panzini are varsity ready if called on. If the Caseys can avoid any significant injuries to their starters and get the anticipated production out of their top guns in the lineup, the sky’s the limit for this very gifted and skilled baseball team. “I feel like we have some good team chemistry, everyone loves being around each other,” Facendo said. “We’re a lot closer this year with everyone back so I think we’re in good shape for this year. Hitting against the top pitchers in the Shore this year is going to be key for us.”

Danielle Olsen is the head coach of the Toms River East Raiders softball team. Last season was Coach Olsen’s first year being a head coach to these ladies. The Raiders ended the 2015 season with a record of 6-16. When Coach Olsen was asked her thought about last season she stated: “It was a transition year. It was my first year coaching. I was also the third head coach over a 3-year span, so for most of these ladies, they have experienced a lot of change during their years playing in high school.” Looking back on the 2015 season, one game stood out the most to Coach Olsen, that was the game vs. Jackson Liberty. It was one of the last games for The Raiders, and they came out with the win 5-1. Coach Olsen’s thoughts on the win were, “Jackson Liberty was ranked high, and beating them towards the end of the season showed that we have improved, and we as a team should be taken as a team to beat!” Now that the 2016 season has officially begun, there is always something teams could improve on. For Toms River East softball team, there has been a lot of change over the past few years, which is challenging in itself. Not only has there been coaching changes happening, but also position changes. Coach Olsen expressed, “There is always something to improve on in all different areas. Out of all of the ladies that make up the team, only three of them are in the same position as last year.” The team’s goals for the season are to be competitors in the A South Division, and to excel in the Shore Conference Tournament. When asked if there is a specific game the team is looking forward to Coach Olsen revealed, “we look forward to play every single game, we are always excited to play each game.” The Raiders started the 2016 season in the best way with a win vs. Southern 1-0 on April 1st. Senior, and third basemen Samantha Lanzano’s goal is to continue playing softball at Ocean County College next season. Fellow Senior, and catcher Kyleigh Norris, has decided to take her softball career to the next level, and committed to play at Wagner College next year.

AFTER BREAKOUT 2015 SEASON, MATAWAN SOFTBALL EXPECTS EVEN BIGGER THINGS THIS SEASON by Mike Ready
MATAWAN – After completing the softball programs’ most successful season since 2005: winning 21 games, capturing the programs first division title since 2006, making it to the semifinals of the Monmouth County Tournament, and final of the Shore Conference Tournament the Matawan Huskies are looking for bigger and better things this season. The Huskies, who finished ranking sixth in the Shore Conference, also made an amazing run to the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group II final as the No. 8 seed. They beat No. 1 seed Johnson 2-0 in the quarterfinals before losing a 3-2 heartbreaker to No. 2 seed Robbinsville (25-4) - ranked No. 10 in the final NJ.com top 20 in the final. “Last year gave us a lot of confidence and put Matawan on the map a little bit,” Matawan head coach Bob Dubina said. “I think the kids embraced it but they also understand that there’s some unfinished business. They got the tease and now they want to get back there.” In the state final game, Matawan came back from a 2-0 deficit with one run in the sixth and one in the seventh to tie it before losing it in the 10th inning. Unfortunately for Matawan, they lost star shortstop Lauren Conroy early in the game with an injury, but the first-team All-Shore and second team All-Group II selection is back for her junior year hoping to lead the Huskies to new heights. “We’re going to be really good this year, really tough,” Conroy said. “Our lineup is setup really good. We already have the mindset that we want to go back to the state final and win. We finished short in every tournament we played last year so we want to win them this year.” Conroy heads a group of seven returning starters for the Huskies plus a number of experienced underclassmen that return and will play bigger roles this season. During her emerging season, Conroy was flirting with a triple crown for most the year. She led the Shore Conference in home runs (12), was second in batting average (.592), but slipped to fourth in RBI’s with 37. Conroy missed most of Matawan’s preseason trip to Florida after suffering a concussion in the second game of the road trip. She may still miss opening day. But according to Dubina, she’s progressing well and should only miss a game or two
at the most. The Huskies went 6-3 on the trip against competition from Chicago, Minnesota, New York, Ohio and New Jersey. Matawan’s biggest obstacle this season will be replacing AllClass B North pitcher Erin Powers. She won 18 games for the Huskies a year ago while also being one of the teams most clutch hitters. Dubina will go with a two-girl rotation with returning starter junior Jessica Veary and newcomer Megan Rush, a junior – taking the ball. Veary went 3-1 last season with 23 strikeouts in 25-in-
nings pitched with only five earned runs allowed. At the plate she hit .277 with a home run, four doubles and 11 RBI with 16 runs scored. Both have looked good according to Dubina, “They both look pretty good but they’ve had their ups and downs. They don’t throw the ball as hard as Erin but they really move the ball around enough that we should be fine.” Sam Buchman will lead off and play centerfield after a junior campaign that saw her hit .357 with four home runs, two triples, a double with 12 RBI. Batting second and in right field is senior Tracey Brereton who averaged .347 a year ago with 26 hits and 22 runs scored. Conroy bats third followed by cleanup hitter Hadassah Curry, who moves from third to first base this season. She was eighth in the Shore Conference with 32 RBI as a junior last year when she had three home runs and seven doubles while hitting .410. “Those two (Conroy and Curry) had great years in the middle of our lineup last season,” Dubina said. “Hopefully we can get the same kind of production from them this year. Those two and Veary in the middle of the lineup will be our run production.” Veary is slotted into the fifth spot in the batting order followed by junior second baseman Jen Lloyd who averaged .301 with 25 hits, 14 runs scored and 11 RBI. Newcomer Olivia Caponegro will bat seventh and play third base followed by senior Sami Boyne who is back in left field after hitting .299 with 16 RBI with four doubles and a triple. Sophomore Amanda Hunter gets the start behind the plate and bats ninth after earning the starting role late in the season a year ago. Coming off the bench will be junior Megan Donovan and sophomore Gabby Menzella. When asked what had to happen for his team to take the next step, Dubina said, “We’re not extremely deep, so we have to stay healthy. I think the girls have confidence because they got there last year and I think the big key is going to be our pitching. They have to keep us competitive. They don’t have to do it themselves. We’ll score some runs for them. They just need to keep the ball in the park and keep us in games.” Matawan is ranked No. 7 in the Asbury Park Press preseason top 10.

HITTING 500 WITH TH By Micheal Attardi This is the 500th issue of the Jersey Sporting News. What an accomplishment by anyone’s standards. We say this with a humble, but proud voice. Our loyal advertisers are the ones who should be celebrated. Our publication has been such an asset to local high school sporting programs and our advertisers should be rewarded. Our staff has always seen our work here at our paper as a community service and support group for high school sports. Our mission, crafted over 21 years ago, was to help local student athletes receive more college athletic scholarships. We have achieved this goal and during these years with the help from parents, educators and coaches, we have increased college scholarship offers by 73%. This 500th issue is a true testament that our readers, staff and advertisers have been working together on making a difference in our local communities. When we started JSN, we never knew the impact we would have on local sports. It was a dream of ours to produce a positive and respected paper that every parent, coach, athletic director, educator and advertiser would embrace. We are honored that larger publications, like the Asbury Park Press and similar start-ups were influenced by our model of service. They caught on to the pulse of the people and made sports coverage in Monmouth and Ocean counties real news. As we celebrate the 500th issue, we only hope that you have seen the Attardi family as friends to high school sports. We started this paper for all the right reasons and we know that our schools appreciate us and our efforts for over 21 years. The Attardi family has been ingrained and a permanent fixture here on the Jersey shore since 1931. With three generations of athletes and educators, we are humbled and proud to be part of our local sports history.

HE ATTARDI FAMILY If our father was still alive, he would be still delivering our paper. He was so proud of the paper and what it stood for. He would still be beaming over how Long Branch High School won the State Championship in football his senior year. He would also tell you how proud he was when his son received a full athletic scholarship to college. These are the moments in one’s life that you never forget. We at JSN are so happy to be a major part of those precious memories with you. Last year, we we launched Florida Sporting News (FSN) down in Orlando. It has been an amazing success and the athletes, parents and athletic directors are pleased to have the paper there to showcase their scholar athletes. One of our favorite moments happened just months after we started FSN. Francesca received a call from former Athletic Director of Brick Memorial High School Bill Bruno while he was in Florida. He walked into a store and saw something that looked just like JSN. It was one of our very first issues of FSN. He called to say, “There is a paper that looks just like JSN in a store I was just in.” Fran laughed and said, “Oh Bill; that is our paper FSN. We just started publishing it in Fla. about a month ago.” I only hope that one day we will be celebrating FSN 500th issue in the future. The Attardi family would like to thank everyone who has contributed to our dream. With much respect and love, Michael and Francesca Attardi Founders and Publisher

MIDDLETOWN NORTH LOOKS TO BUILD OFF OF LAST SEASON’S SUCCESS by Mike Ready
MIDDLETOWN – The Middletown North softball program made huge strides during the 2015 season, winning its first Shore Conference Tournament title since 1974, beating No. 3 seed Middletown South 1-0 as the No. 9 seed. They put an end to the Eagles 15-game winning streak in the process. It was their second straight win of the season against their cross-town rivals after a loss in their first meeting. However, that win came after a disappointing 4-3 loss to No. 3 seed Steinert as the No. 2 seed in the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III quarterfinals. The Lions rebounded nicely after that loss and no team had a better finish to the season without winning a state title. In their final three games, the Lions beat Saint John Vianney, Donovan Catholic and Middletown South to win the SCT title. Saint John Vianney was ranked No. 1 in the Shore Conference, Middletown South No. 3 and Donovan Catholic No. 5. “That run was unbelievable,” Lions second-year head coach Marc Rosner said. “The fight that our girls had was unbelievable. The team never gave up, and always stuck together and that gave us opportunities to win. When we played Saint John Vianney the day after the Steinert loss, we just felt very loose going there and I think we came out more together than them with more urgency– and on that day –we were the better team. That win was huge for our confidence, and it built the rest of the tournament and into this season.” The good news for the Lions is that they accomplished all this with only one senior in the starting lineup, along with two juniors, four sophomores and two freshmen. That bodes well for the 2016 team that returns eight of nine starters from last year’s squad, including first team All-State outfielder Kayla Gallo, second team All-State first baseman Christine Gebhardt and first team All-Shore pitcher Riley Kernan. Gallo –a Florida International University commit –who will be in right field, hit for power and average batting .565 with
11 home runs and 55 RBI’s. He also accumulated 47 hits, 23 of those for extra bases. The Mannhattan College-bound Gebhardt averaged .521 with 44 RBI’s and will be back at first base this season with University of Rhode Island commit Riley Kernan returning to the mound where she went 21-6 with 3.18 ERA while batting .441 as a sophomore. The Lions will need to replace second team All-Shore shortstop Nikki Alfano, the teams leadoff hitter and table setter from a year ago who made things happen hitting .545 with league-leading 48 runs scored. Sophomore Milena Wilton will lead off this season and play third base, but no one player is expected to fill Alfano’s shoes. “It’s not so much Milena taking Nikki’s spot,” Rosner said. “It’s everybody getting a little bit better and doing their part to give us the best chance to win. So it’s not necessarily Milena having to duplicate what Nikki did last year, but it’s more Milena doing her part and everyone else doing their part and building off of last season’s success.” Junior Liz Dorsa (.297, 24 RBI) returns at second base. Alyssa Vetrano is at shortstop after playing third as a freshman last season. Junior Ryan Rasmussen will be back behind the plate. Centerfielder Payleigh Behan (.395, 25 runs) also returns while junior Emily Kernan takes over in left field as the only newcomer to the lineup. Sophomore pitcher Adrianna Noterile has looked good in preseason scrimmages and Rosner feels she can be used on the mound to spell Kernan when needed. Sophomore Adrianna Cerbo will be the first player off the bench in the outfield, catching or at third base. “This is our last season in Class A North and the idea is to take our little goals. Then those will lead up to the big goals,” Cerbo said. “It all starts with winning the A North championship, then winning 20 games again. We want to be a top 10 team in the state at the end of the season and we want to make deep runs in the county and state tournaments.”
After last season’s success, the Lions won’t be able to sneak up on anyone and the days of being overlooked on anyone’s schedule are long gone. “I think the team is ready to welcome the target on our backs,” Kernan said. “I’m used to playing with that pressure and so are my teammates. I think we play better under pressure, and it should help us have a very good season.”

JAGUARS SWING FOR FENCES IN 2016 By Michael Ward
Jackson Memorial has a baseball program that is one of the best in the region when it comes to being a proving ground for future talent and results on the diamond. But last year’s upsetting finish to Red Bank Catholic in the prequel game to Shore Conference Final led more to be desired. The 4-1 score didn’t reflect Jackson’s tenacity and ability to overcome the odds. This year, they’re coming back for more. Jackson stood as one of the top contenders in the Shore Conference last year, standing tall with an impressive 22-7 record. This year, they hope to refine their skills and improve their record so they can go all the way and capture a Championship. To do this, the Jaguars will have to mix and match their varying degrees of experience on a high school baseball level to overpower their opponents. Leading the team with the closest graduation dates looming, is Catcher Dallas Sheard, Outfielder Mike Christie, Shortstop Kyle Johnson, Centerfielder Kyle Lona, Pitcher Tim Beck and
Pitcher/First Baseman Chris Hawryluk.

These seniors will form the backbone of Jackson’s 2016 Season as they go up against tough Shore Conference opponents. While the rest of the roster is comprised of 2 Sophomores and 9 Juniors, Freshman and Left Handed Pitcher Alex Iadisernia may prove to be a challenge to hitter’s who are accustomed to seeing the ball from the other hand.

Jackson has gotten their season off to a great start with Chris Hawrlyk’s complete game on the mound leading the Jaguars to a 4-3 win over Toms River South. The schedule coming up leads Jackson Memorial to Middletown North, Toms River North, Southern Regional, Freehold Township, Lacey and Brick Township. Jackson Memorial is expected to perform very well this season with the strong mix of talent they have on staff. Time will tell if it will be enough to secure them the Championship they’ve been in the running for over the past couple of seasons.

Rinaldi are all vying for playing time in the infield. Senior Anthony Falconite and switch hitting junior Evan Menendez look to have the inside track in the outfield alongside Porter while senior Brenden Galvin returns as DH/C after hitting .276 a year ago with double and four RBI’s. Although CBA lost some starting talent, the Colts pitching depth and the return of two first team preseason All-Americans makes them the preseason favorites as the No. 1 team in the Shore Conference. Playing in the Class A North – which looks like the toughest division in the Shore Conference this season – will be a good barometer of just how good this team is come tournament time. “Losing those seniors is going to be tough for us, it’s never easy to lose six guys out of the lineup who were senior leaders,” Dalatri said. “But it’s our turn to be seniors and lead the team and groom the young guys we have in the program to just follow in their footsteps. “It’s not just me, just not Luca, it’s all these guys,” Martorano added. “The rest of the seniors are a big part of the team. It’s really not just a one-man, two-man thing, it’s one of us wouldn’t good without the other, it’s a real team thing.” CBA is the preseason pick as the No. 1 team in the NJ.com top 10 and the Shore Conference top 10.

versity commit had a .422 OBP, scored 29 times, hit .333 and drove in 21 runs. The pitching staff is undoubtedly the strength of the team. It’s deep and talented with a number of arms behind Dalatri and Campbell that contributed significant innings down the stretch as juniors. Juniors Mason O’Mara, Joe Gargana, Sal Morreale and Ronnie Meehan, as well as, sophomore Nick Hohenstein give long-time CBA head coach Marty Kenney plenty of options both starting and out of the pen. O’Mara has starting experience going 2-1 in with a 0.00 ERA, striking out 11 batters in 17 innings pitched while Gargana recorded a 2.69 ERA in 11 IP out of the pen. Gargana closed out the Shore Conference Tournament semifinal coming in relief of Campbell, tossing two innings of shutout ball allowing one hit and one walk then in the sectional semifinal he entered the game in the sixth with one out before getting out of inning on two pitches with the help of an inning ending double play ball. Senior Luke Chece returns to the pitching mix after an injury-shortened junior year and he and Hohenstein will be battling for infield spots as well. Sophomore shortstop Jake Harnish, sophomore third baseman Andrea Dalarti, and juniors Brian Golden and Sal

er run a state title is not out of the question. CBA enters the season ranked No. 1 in the NJ.com preseason top 20. “It’s definitely going to be tough to top last year,” Dalatri said. “We have a good group of young kids and us seniors are going to lead the way. We’re counting on a lot of young guys this year to fill some spots that we lost last year but we’re really looking forward to it. All of us have put last season behind us and it’s not a focal point for us anymore; we’re getting better and better each day.” Porter was a big reason why CBA was able to score 214 runs in 2015. eye-popping 1.366 OPS. The power-hitting catcher’s two-run, two-out home run in the top of the first inning in the state final gave the Colts an early 2-0 lead and they never looked back as Dalatri hurled a four-hit shutout, struck out 12 and walked only one batter. Dalatri – the 2015 NJ Gatorade Player of the Year - went 9-0 last season with 0.89 ERA and 0.80 WHIP with 122 strikeouts in 71 innings pitched. At the plate, he hit .402 with nine home runs and 44 RBI’s with a .839 slugging percentage and .480 OBP for a sizzling 1.319 OPS. In the state final, he added a solo shot in top of the fifth that pushed the score to 5-0. Dalatri and Martorano were both named to the Louisville Slugger preseason AllAmerican first team. Campbell won his last three starts a year ago, including five innings of two-hit shutout work to earn the decision in a 4-0 win over Red Bank Catholic in the Shore Conference Tournament final. He went 5-2 as a junior with a 2.03 ERA and looks to be penciled in as the No.2 starter behind Dalatri this season, as well as playing somewhere in the infield. Graduation did hit the Colts hard as they lost six players who started in the state final and their No.2 pitcher, Mike Garvey. But with the return of Dalatri, Martorano, and starting centerfielder Cid Porter along with the influx of some very talented underclassmen, anoth-

LINCROFT – Last season, Christian Brothers Academy became only the second team in Shore Conference history to win all five possible championships availed to them. The Colts won the Class A North championship, the Monmouth and Shore Conference Tournament titles and the South Jersey NonPublic A title. They then wrapped up a 27-5 campaign with a 7-0 shutout of No. 1 Don Bosco for the Non-Public A championship and supplanted the Ironmen as the No. 1 team in New Jersey in the NJ.com final top 20. The Colts won their final 14 games of the season after an inconsistent start left them with five losses halfway through the season, including being shutout twice by Freehold’s Steve Rullo. Following a 9-5 loss to Middletown South on May 4th when starting pitcher Kenny Campbell was chased in the fifth inning, the Colts suddenly became unbeatable. Led by first team All-State selections and University of North Carolina comitts Luca Dalarti and Brandon Martorano – both returning seniors, CBA embarked on magical run to the state title. Martorano raised his batting average by 89 points to .444 during those final 14 games, hit eight of his Shore-Conference-leading 11 home runs and drove in 19 of his 31 RBI’s. He also had three walk-off hits during that stretch and led the Shore Conference in hits (48) and slugging percentage (.870) with an
