BARNEGAT SENIORS EAGER TO END STATE PLAYOFF DROUGHT By Mike Ready
BARNEGAT - It’s been four years – 2014 to be exact when the Bengals lost to Buena in the South Jersey Group II first round – that Barnegat football has qualified for the state playoffs.
TFL, one sack, a fumble recovery and five quarterback pressures, while Pannone recorded 40 tackles, one sack, six TFL and five quarterback pressures. “Defense is definitely a big part of my game, said Morris, who will play tight end at Holy Cross. “I love to bring the intensity on the defensive side as well as the offensive side. I’ll do anything to help out my team whether it’s offense, defense or special teams.
They’ve been close – recording consecutive 5-5 seasons the last two years, but just missing the cut. And it certainly isn’t due to any lack of effort, preparation or desire to succeed on the players’ part, as they are an extension of their head coach Rob Davis – a demanding, laborious leader, who is one of the most respected head coaches in the Shore Conference.
Jackstadt and Lauer are the backups at end while 5-foot-9, 175-pound junior Dominic Aneses and 5-foot-9, 210-pound senior Noah Mattiello will spell at tackle.
If you do your math correctly, however, you’ll find that none of the current 18 seniors on the team has ever experienced a playoff football game in their high school careers – a streak that this year’s group feels confident they can put an end to – for good reason. “It’s definitely exciting; we’ve been looking forward to this year since sophomore year when we all started playing varsity, said senior tight end Sean Morris. With all our guys coming back we’re looking forward to having a good season. In our time at Barnegat we have not gone to the playoffs and that’s always on our mind, but it starts with winning each individual game, winning the division and then moving onward after that. The Bengals return nine starters on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball this season and you can make a good argument that the Bengals will not only qualify for the state playoffs, but they’ll win their first playoff game since the 2013 team that went 10-2 and advanced to the South Jersey Group III final. Senior quarterback Brian Finucan is back behind center after a solid junior campaign – his first as a starter. The 6-foot2 signal caller is a pocket passer who is athletic enough to avoid the pass rush and take off when nothings there. Finucan went 58-of-106 in pass attempts for 1010 yards and eight touchdowns with six interceptions. You can expect those numbers to improve as he continues to mature as a quarterback and better defines his role as a leader.
All-B South selection Ewan is back in the middle at linebacker; Cotton moves to linebacker from the safety where he was All-Division a year ago and Godfrey will man the “WILL spot, giving the Bengals a formidable starting trio of linebackers. Juniors Rashidi Alleyne, Schafer and Aaron Osborn will back those three up. Ewan led the team with 83 tackles including 11 TFL, one sack and an interception.
BARNEGAT “We’re definitely clicking a lot better than we were last year, Finucan said of the offense. “We all know our stuff and are ready to go. We’re really ready; we think we’ve got a shot to really make some noise this year. We’re a threat both on the ground and in the air. Morris is Finucan’s main target – for good reason. The 6-foot-3, 228-pound Holy Cross University commit was a first-team All-Shore selection a year ago when he hauled in 38 Finucan passes for 671 yards and eight touchdowns. Morris is big and strong and is an exceptional blocking tight end as well as receiver. The Finucan-toMorris connection has the potential to be one of the most dangerous in the Shore. Wide receiver is the least experienced position group returning for the Bengals but they feel they have a trio of receivers that can draw some of the attention away from Morris by opening things up down field. Junior Devyn DeFilipo (6-foot-2, 175 pounds) is the only starter back from a year ago and he assumed that role for
only four games, catching just four balls for 163 yards but one of those was an 80yard touchdown. Juniors Dominique Dorphin and Caleb Schafer step into starting roles this season with Schafer having seen limited action in nine games a year ago with one catch.
left tackle Griffin Jackstadt, 6-foot-1, 268-pound center Tim Lauterbach, and 6-foot, 244-pound senior right guard Joe Lauer. Six-foot senior Eric Feroldi gets the starting assignment at left guard with 6-foot, 278-pound senior Anthony Grimes, 6-foot-3, 229-pound sophomore T.J. Stokes and 5-foot-9, 220- pound senior John Pannone the primary backups.
At running back, workhorse Charlie Cotton is back after carrying the ball 208 times last season for 1016 yards (4.9 yards per carry) and 10 touchdowns and catching seven passes out of the backfield for 85 yards. The 5-foot-10, 205-pound Cotton is blessed with a combination of power and speed giving him ability to run over or outrun would-be tacklers. Senior Mike Godfrey – a starting linebacker – will back up Cotton and 5-foot-11, 219-pound Brian Ewan, who is the starting middle linebacker, is back at fullback.
After finishing in the lower half in scoring defense (21.6 ppg) a year ago, the Bengals feel confident that with nine returning starters back they’ll improve that number dramatically. The line returns three of four starters including: Morris and Pannone at defensive end and Grimes, who was an All-Division selection, at tackle. Six-foot-2, 195-pound sophomore Robert Armstrong Jr. worked his way into the fourth starting spot at tackle after shining in preseason.
Four out of five starters are back on the offensive line including: 6-foot-2, 276-pound right senior right tackle Philip Gogarty, 6-foot-3, 238-pound junior
Morris collected 41 tackles, 3.5 sacks, two interceptions and team highs in TFL (15) and quarterback pressures (14) from his end spot. Grimes added 39 tackles, four
In the secondary, three starters are back including: junior Matt Scott, who started three games at strong safety last season, senior Sean Madej at free safety and senior Tristan Porcelli at cornerback. The 6-foot-2 DeFilipo gets the nod at the cornerback spot opposite Porcelli. Madej was third on the team with 64 tackles and had a team-high four passes defended with one interception while Porcelli recorded 33 tackles and three TFL. “Defense is a big thing for us in Barnegat and we always hone in on that, Ewan said. “Our defensive coaches always do a good job with that and we’re just really excited to have nine seniors coming back – it’s very big for us. We’re looking awesome right now in practice, everyone’s doing their job. If everyone continues to do their jobs, there’s no reason this team can’t make the playoffs and get that first playoff win since 2013, and from there, who knows how far they can go.

Brick Football Hopes Depth Propels Them in 2018 By John Sorce
BRICK TOWNSHIP – Thirty-one. That is the number of players that missed time last season for the Brick Township football team due to various injuries. Despite this crazy number of setbacks, the Dragons still managed to finish 2017 with a winning record of 6-5. “We hit a little bit of a rough patch in the middle of the season, then we got some guys back toward the end and we started to play like we know we can,” fourth year head coach Len Zdanowicz said. “We did get some younger kids some experience last year, which should help us going forward. I think we have a little more depth this year than we had in the past.”
they’ve put on pads. They’re very good linebackers and very good leaders. They read defenses and offenses well and they’re two great kids.” Zdanowicz has known Cole Groschel ever since he was born, having been friends with his father when they were in high school at Brick. “He’s always been a three-sport athlete,” Zdanowicz said. “He’s always had a ball in his hand since he was little. He loves playing sports and you can see his love for the game of football really shows out there.” Zdanowicz has known a lot of these kids for years, and to be able to coach them at the high school level is special for him.
Two key linebackers this year for Brick will be Joe Carchio and Richie Tallmadge, while Cory Englehardt and Christian Malta will line up on the defensive line for Brick. Tallmade and Malta are two-way players, also serving as running backs.
“I’ve coached a lot of these kids from when they first put on pads when they were playing in youth leagues,” Zdanowicz said. “It’s been great for me to watch these guys as they’ve grown as football players and as young men.”
“Those kids have been tough since they were playing as sophomores weighing about 185 lbs.,” Zdanowicz said. “Now, they are both upwards of 220. It’s nice to get the size with them. They are two totally different players. Corey is 6’4,” 230 and Christian is like 5’9,” 220, but they both get the job done. Joe and Richie have been tough football players since the first time
When it comes to younger players fighting for spots on the varsity roster, it comes down to competition for Zdanowicz. “We just want to see competition,” Zdanowicz said. “Right now, we have some competition at some spots with some younger kids, especially on the offensive

BRICK line. We graduated most of our players last year who were offensive linemen, so that’s where we have the most competition and we have some kids that are really working hard and you can see it. Hopefully, that drives us to have a successful offensive line this year.” The quarterback battle for Brick is going to come down to senior Jimmy Leblo and junior Anthony Prato, and there’s a chance both will see time under center this season. The team will utilize a multiple style offense, depending who is lining up at quarterback. Brick will be competing in the Colonial Division this season, and have key matchups against Saint John
Vianney, Rumson-Fair Haven and in-town rival Brick Memorial, against whom they will open the season on the road on Sept. 8. “Playing them in the first game every year really drives what we do in the offseason,” Zdanowicz said. “We have a countdown in our weight room and that game drives our offseason every year. They lost a talented group of players to graduation, but they have their quarterback back and some nice looking players coming up. Our kids are focused on them right now and we’re going to have to worry about them come Sept. 8th.”
Please note that JSN does not pick any of the athletes shown in our preview issue. All of the athletes that attended the photo shoot were selected by their schools. Every school in the Shore Conference is invited to participate in our annual football photo shoot. We regret that some players were cut from this year’s issue due to either no photo or no stats provided to us. Every school and their athletes are important to us and we wish we could get everyone in. If you feel that your athlete/team should have been included, please contact your school to address the issue.

Saint John Vianney Football Looking for Depth to Live up to High Expectations By John Sorce
HOLMDEL – Expectations are always high on the gridiron at Saint John Vianney. After going an undefeated 10-0 in the regular season, the Lancers fell to top-seeded and eventual state champion DePaul Catholic in the Non-Public, Group 3 semifinal.
year. This will give some younger kids opportunity early on in the season to get some game experience. One of the returning seniors is CJ Hanson, who is committed to Rutgers as an offensive lineman. But he plays both sides of the ball at SJV.
This year, the Lancers will be led by first year head coach Joe Martucci, who comes to Holmdel after serving on the coaching staff at Kean University for the last six years. Prior to that, he was the head coach at Matawan for 28 years from 1984-2011.
“CJ has been a real good leader for us,” Martucci said. “He’s taken on a leadership role and the kids rally around him. We expect him to be an outstanding player for us this year on both sides of the ball.”
The Lancers graduated 18 seniors off its roster from last season, and will have just nine this
In addition to Hanson, Paul Liseno returns to the Lancers’ offensive line. He was a first-team

Junior CJ Duell, who transferred from St. Joe’s Prep in Philadelphia, will be the quarterback for the Lancers this season. “CJ has done a great job so far,” Martucci said. “He’s worked extremely hard to learn all the terminology and try to pick up the offense. You can see his development since the day we started as to where he is right now. He understands all the things we’re asking him to do at this point.” Kavon Chambers is another junior transfer, and will be the top running back this season for Saint John Vianney. He transferred from Central Regional. “We were extremely fortunate to be able to have a kid of Kavon’s caliber transfer to Saint John Vianney,” Martucci said. “He’s been working hard and is a very nice kid just getting to know him and the type of person that he is has been a pleasure. He’s done everything we’ve asked him and you can see him improving each day as far as learning the plays and the footwork when it comes to blocking in our pass game. He’s also a threat to catch a pass, so he’s a triple threat on offense in terms of he can run, block and catch.” A key freshman to watch this season for the Lancers is wide receiver Jaden Bellamy, who is the son of Jay Bellamy. Jay played for Martucci at Matawan, went on to play at Rutgers and had a 14-year NFL career with the Seattle Seahawks and New Orleans Saints as a safety. He is also the team’s defensive coordinator. “Jaden is an outstanding athlete who is only going to get better and better as time goes on,” Martucci said. Another transfer, Damon Washington, will be one of the Lancers top defensive backs this season. He transferred from Don Bosco and is entering his senior year. “Damon is an outstanding one-on-one cover guy and is a very hard worker,” Martucci said. “He already has some college offers and with Jay’s tutelage, he’ll have more opportunities pop up and he’ll have a big year.” Andrew McGimpsey returns at tight end and defensive end, and Martucci expects him to be more involved in the passing game this season.

With just nine seniors, it is going to be important to keep those guys healthy throughout the season if Saint John Vianney wants to live up to their lofty expectations. Martucci hopes to find some younger guys they can use to rotate those guys into game situations and give their seniors breaks when they need them. “We need to find some young guys early on in the season that can give some of these veteran players some rest,” Martucci said. “I think that’s going to be important in keeping these guys healthy throughout the entire season.”

LONG BRANCH NOT RESTING ON LAURELS AS THEY FOCUS ON 2018 SEASON By Mike Ready
LONG BRANCH – Coming off its first championship season since 1999 when they won the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV title, Long Branch is ready for another run at a championship after waiting 18 years to bring home the program’s second sectional title.
on the right side of the line at tackle and guard, respectively, with starting defensive tackle Imir Durant also in the offensive line mix. “Returning three starters on the line is huge,” Cerruti said. “Everyone who is playing on the line this year saw snaps last year, so there really aren’t any adjustments there.”
Although some of the vital pieces from last year’s championship run have moved on, including current University of Pittsburg freshman tight end Kaymar Mimes, Monmouth University freshman wide receiver T.J. Fosque and Susquehana University freshman quarterback Juwan Wilkins, the Green Wave do bring back six starters on offense and eight on defense and should be considered one of the preseason favorites in Central Jersey Group III.
On defense, Long Branch returns eight starters, including all three of their linebackers in their 4-3 look. Second-team All-Shore linebacker Luke Arnold will again man the middle where he was third in the Shore Conference with 131 tackles a year ago. Morris and Gordon will flank Arnold on the outside forming one of – if not the best – trios of linebackers in the Shore.
With Wilkins gone, Long Branch will need to replace not only his 2000-plus yards-passing and 22 touchdowns, but his on-field leadership as well.
Arnold will also be replacing Mimes as the starting tight end this season and with his size and toughness you can expect him to flourish there. Seniors Lucas Telles (6-foot-3, 215 pounds) and Niles Montgomery (6-foot-2, 215 pounds) will also line up at tight end, as well as both doubling at defensive end in the Green Wave’s deep rotation of defensive linemen.
Luckily for the Green Wave, they believe they’ve found the right man in senior Marc Dennis, who was the starting safety and the backup quarterback on last year’s team after splitting time under center with Wilkins in 2016. Dennis started one game a year ago at quarterback so he knows the system s and has stood out this summer in preseason camp. Dennis was one of the leaders on defense last season and has shown those same leadership qualities at the quarterback spot this summer drawing rave reviews from both coaches and players for his work ethic and on-field demeanor. He has adequate arm strength, reads the field well and is a dangerous runner – something Long Branch plans to capitalize on. “I’ve been really comfortable back there,” Dennis said of his new-found role. “I played one full game (last season) at quarterback and felt pretty comfortable. It’s not anything too new for me and Juwan (Wilkins) still helps me out. “Juwan was more of a passer but I bring more of a running aspect to the game. I think I will give the defense another thing to watch out for, so I like bringing that added dimension to our offense. I have some big shoes to fill, but I like the pressure.” Starting wide receiver Matt Clarke, who had 27 catches for 349 yards and two scores, including one TD in the final, has been impressed with Dennis’ play so far in camp. “I like Marc at quarterback; I’ve been playing with him since AYF and he’s a great athlete,” said Clarke. “It’s good because he can run, throw on the run or find me from inside the pocket. It’s been really fun watching him play.” Long Branch will probably turn to second-team All-
Cerrutti, who has been unstoppable in preseason scrimmages, will man one defensive end spot with Torres at the other. Metzler and Durant are the starting tackles with Taylor Jr. also in the rotation. All five starting offensive linemen will likely see snaps on the defensive line as well as junior Beyon Jennings.
LONG BRANCH Shore running back Jermain Corbett in an even greater capacity early in the season while Dennis gets his feet wet – but that’s a good thing. All the 5-foot-9, 180-pounds Corbett did during his breakout sophomore campaign was rush for 1,418 yards –sixth in the Shore Conference – on 263 carries (5.4 yards per carry) while scoring a team-high 14 touchdowns, including running for 152 yards and scoring two touchdowns in the Green Wave’s 43-42 overtime win over Freehold in the championship game. Several players are battling it out for the backup running back spot, including seniors Qua’zahum Dennis, Devyn Blount and junior Jah’ Kwan Gordon. Senior Fullback La’Qym Morris also returns to the backfield. The 5-foot-8, 200-pound Morris is a devastating blocker as well as punishing runner when called on, especially in goal-line situations where he scored five touchdowns a year ago. Starting sophomore linebacker Bobby Lawrence will also see time at fullback spelling Morris. The wide receiver spot took the hardest hit from graduation with Long Branch having to replace Fosque’s 704 receiving yards and seven touchdowns, Pasa Fields’
611 yards and six touchdowns and Mimes’ 178 yards and four touchdowns. Look for the 6-foot-4 Clarke to up his game a notch this season as he takes on the No. 1 role. He has the potential to be one of the top receivers in the Shore Conference this fall and, with his familiarity with Dennis, could lead to one of the better quarterback-wide receiver combinations in the Shore. Sophomore Jaylon Farrar has had an excellent summer camp and, according to head coach Dan George, he has been one of the most impressive players in camp. Farrar looks to have locked up the No. 2 spot at wide receiver with Junior J.J. Sherin, Blount and senior Zahdierr Blueford in the wide receiver mix as well. The offensive line returns the left side of the line and center with first-team All-Shore left tackle Kevin Cerruti leading the way. Cerruti is a 6-foot-3, 285-pound road grader who has received an offer from Monmouth University. At left guard, 6-foot, 240-pound Hunter Metzler returns along with 6-foot, 225-pound senior Tracy Taylor Jr. who is back to anchor the line at center. Seniors Jaheir Smith-Taylor and 5-foot-11, 245-pound starting defensive end Vic Torres get the starting nods
“Our front seven is really deep and we have great chemistry,” Cerritti said. “Everyone is connected and we know how to play together.” Morris will also line up at the “Rover” positon covering open space depending on the defensive look. Dennis at safety and Corbett at cornerback return as starters with Blount, Ferrara, junior J.J. Sherin and seniors JaQue Coleman, Latrell Bennett, Tyrone Hastings and Billy Levy all in the secondary mix. “The defense is looking really good this year; everyone’s just playing balls to the wall,” said Arnold. “I feel the defense is the strength of the team right now, we’re just so deep with everyone back.” Long Branch is one of the preseason favorites to capture the Central Jersey Group IV title again this season and if they can avoid some of the usual pitfalls that accompany a championship, they should be able to make another run at a title. “That’s really just in the back of our minds, we’re just focusing on game-to-game,” Arnold said when asked about the chances of repeating. “Last year’s in the past and we don’t really feed off of that. But, yea, the goal is definitely back-to-back.”

RED BANK CATHOLIC FOCUSED ON ONE GOAL – STATE CHAMPIONSHIP By Mike Ready
the defensive line a year ago as a freshman. Sophomore guard Luke Guidetti, who was a varsity call-up at the end of last season, and freshman Matt Cody are in the O-line mix as well.
RED BANK – It’s been three years since Red Bank Catholic last won a playoff game when they beat Pope John, 21-14, in a 2015 Non-Public Group III firstround game before falling to Saint John Vianney in the semifinal round.
Defensively, the Caseys look to improve on the 21.3 points per game they surrendered last season. Up front, Smith and Louro will start at tackle with Bauman and senior Gino Tartamella, who stated at linebacker a year ago, at the defensive end spots. Tartamella is coming off a standout junior season which saw him record 84 tackles, five TFL, two forced fumbles and a sack. Mansfield, Richards and J.J. Lodato will be in the D-line rotation as well.
This year’s group of seniors, who were only freshmen at the time, are not only eager to break their playoff losing streak, but hungry to bring Red Bank Catholic its first state title since 2014 when that team won the program’s first championship in 38 years and second in program history. “Of course it’s our goal to win a playoff game, but it’s a state championship all the way,” said senior dualthreat quarterback Steve Lubischer. “That’s our goal; it’s always been our goal.” Lubischer, who has already committed to Boston College, returns under center where he was a third-team All-Shore selection a year ago after a breakout junior campaign. He threw for 1,810 yards and 18 touchdowns with only five interceptions while rushing for 496 yards and seven touchdowns for an average of 9.9 yards per carry. The multi-dimensional Lubischer has the ability to take over games with his arm or his legs. He guided an offense that averaged 39.8 points per game and 427 yards per game a year ago and with his blossoming talent and the weapons he has at his disposal, there’s reason to believe that this year’s offense will surpass those numbers – a scary thought for the rest of the Shore Conference. And the fact that the 6-foot-3 Lubischer grew two inches and added muscle to his frame over the offseason should keep opposing coaches up at night. “We’ve had a pretty good camp so far and we’re working really hard,” Lubischer said. “Now we’re anxious for our first game. It’s just really exciting having a lot of people back. We’ve got a great group.” That first game is shaping up to be a doozy, pitting the Caseys against Saint John Vianney – the Shore Conference preseason No. 1 and No. 2 ranked teams, respectively, entering the season – on Friday, Aug. 31 in Holmdel. In the NJ.com preseason Top 20, Red Bank Catholic is ranked 15th and the Lancers one spot back at No. 16. If that’s not enough fanfare for you, the game gives Red Bank Catholic an early opportunity to avenge last year’s 35-17 loss to the Lancers in week seven. Lubischer did lose his top receiver from last season, Brandon Lombana, now a freshman receiver at Stonehill College, but the Caseys have an ace in the hole in senior wide receiver Jaden Key.
The back seven returns six starters. Columbia (91 T, 3 TFL, 5 SK, 11 QP, FF) was an All-Division linebacker last season and he returns in the middle with Cmielewski as the weakside linebacker. Gordinier, who had a breakout sophomore campaign is back as strongside linebacker after posting excellent numbers (69 T, 1.5 SKS, 2 INT, 4 PD, 2 TFL) in his first year as a starter. Seniors Steve Smielewski and Jack Zenkert (27 T, 3 TFL, SK, FR) will be in the linebacker rotation as well.
RED BANK CATHOLIC The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Key finished second on the team in receiving with 19 catches for 512 yards and five touchdowns and you can expect those numbers to go way up this season. “We’ve had a strong connection for a couple of years now and it’s only grown bigger,” Lubischer said of his familiarity with Key. Junior M.J. Wright, who caught a touchdown pass in the Caseys playoff loss, is back as a returning starter and senior starting free safety Anthony Romano will slide over to offense at wide receiver this year when the Caseys have the ball, transferring his ball-hawking skills on defense over to offense with junior Kevin Degnan is another option at wide receiver. Second-team All-Shore tight end Kevin Bauman, one of the top juniors in the state, returns and will be another big target Lubischer will benefit from. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound Notre Dame commit recorded 19 catches for 380 yards and five touchdowns last season and with his size and strength at times can be unstoppable – picture the Patriots’ Rob Gronkowski. Also at tight end is 6-foot-5, 225-pounder Charlie Gordinier, giving the Caseys a pair of bookend tight ends that most teams won’t be able to match-up physically with, whether on the line of scrimmage or in open space.
When All-Shore running back Zach Bair went down with an injury towards the end of last season, junior Billy Guidetti stepped in and burst on the scene rushing for 579 yards and seven touchdowns on 66 carries for an 8.8 yards per carry average. The relatively unknown Guidetti should be even more dangerous this year as he takes his game to the next level and establishes himself as one of the top backs in the Shore. Junior Elijah Jules is another name to keep an eye on at running back behind Guidetti. RBC boast two veteran fullbacks in senior John Columbia – one of the top returning linebackers in the Shore (85 tackles, 3 sacks, 3 TFL, FF), and senior Steve Cmielewski, who started there a year ago before breaking his ankle in week one knocking him out for the season. Senior offensive lineman Tommy Smith – a 6-foot-2, 285-pound three-year starter – is the lone returner on the offensive line, but the Caseys always have a stable of big-bodied offensive linemen in waiting and they just plug them in and never seem to miss a beat. This year’s crop of road graders vying for starting jobs include: seniors Ian Sullivan (6-foot-1, 225 pounds), Nate Mansfield (6-foot-1, 235 pounds) and Ambrose Richards (wrestled at 195 pounds) and 5-foot-11, 225-pound sophomore Jake Louro, who saw time on
Key, Wright and Romano will spearhead the secondary for the Caseys. Key is a shutdown corner while Romano is a ball-hawking free safety that can really lay the wood. Key was a first-team All-Shore selection after leading the Shore conference with 13 pass breakups while Romano tied for the team lead with three interceptions and had five pass breakups with 66 tackles. Key and Wright will start at cornerback with Romano at free safety. Junior Kevin Degnan and sophomore Anthony Borriello are in competition for the starting strong safety position. All-Division pick, Ryan O’Hara, will handle the kicking and punting chores again this season giving the special teams a big boost.
UPDATE: No. 1 Red Bank Catholic 41, No. 2 Saint John Vianney 14
Lubischer completed 9-of-12 passes for 140 yards and a touchdown and also ran for 64 yards on 10 carries and two scores as the Caseys bolted out to a 27-0 third-quarter lead and never let up. Cmielewski, Guidetti and Degnan each scored rushing touchdowns and Wright hauled in a 9-yard scoring strike from Lubischer. Bauman caught four passes for 50 yards, Wright three for 35 yards and TD and Key two for 23 yards. Guidetti carried the 16 times picking up 79 yards and a score. The defense recorded five sacks, including three from senior Adam Demurjian and one each from Smith and Tartamella. With the win, the Caseys snapped the Lancers’ 38-game Shore Conference winning streak.

Donovan Catholic Football A Work in Progress, But on the Rise By John Sorce
TOMS RIVER – Coming off a 4-6 season, the Donovan Catholic football team is hoping to take the next step in 2018. Second year head coach Dan Curcione is returning many starters from last year’s squad, including his quarterback, junior Ryan Clark. “Ryan is our returning quarterback and he was a 1,000-yard passer last year and almost rushed for 1,000 yards as well,” Curcione said. “We’re a quarterback centered offense, so he’s certainly a big part of the deal. He’s a very good player and he’s doing a good job of showing leadership skills this year and just maturity level of where he was last year to this year, I’m impressed with so far.” Andre Laney returns for his junior year. He plays receiver and also plays corner back for the Griffins and totaled an impressive 724 receiving yards as a sophomore.
“Andre was a two-way starter for us last year at corner and wide receiver. He was up there for receiving yards in the Shore Conference,” Curcione said. “We look for big things from Andre all the time.”
Dominick Nocero also played at linebacker as a freshman and returns as a sophomore. Donovan has a lot of younger players, but Curcione does not use that as an excuse.
Another junior, Damian Johnson, returns at running back. He was Donovan’s leading rusher a season ago at the position.
“We have some young guys that we will be playing, but that’s no excuse,” Curcione said. “We have high expectations for them.”
Quamire Green started last season as a freshman at middle linebacker, and he returns for his sophomore campaign. Curcione has high expectations for him as he looks to take the next step.
Nick Kenmure is one of Donovan’s seniors and plays both ways on the offensive and defensive line. He is one of their leaders and Curcione mentioned he has shown a lot of improvement in camp at defensive end.
“Quamire started for us at middle linebacker last year as a freshman and led our team in tackles,” Curcione said. “Not too many freshmen play middle linebacker. Not only did he play, he made all the checks, he called the defense, and that’s pretty impressive for a freshman. We’re looking for him to get better.”
Another senior, Bobo Aluko, also plays both ways on the lines and he has impressed Curcione in the weight room this offseason. “Bobo is another two-way guy on both lines, playing guard and is part of our rotation on the defensive line, where we rotate a lot of guys,” Curcione said. “He’s a great leader, a great kid, and a great student. He was awesome in the weight room this offseason, getting up to about 280, 285 right now. He looks like he’s in good shape.” James Bivins is a slot receiver and will be a sophomore this year. He also runs track, so he adds a little “giddy up” to the offense, as Curcione referenced. He also plays corner back, where he’s starting to take some strides and play more physical. Ethan Capone started as a freshman at tight end and is a kid who has grown over the last year. Curcione said they are looking for big things from him this year. Donovan runs a spread offense and a 3-4 multiple defense. After winning just four games last season, Curcione looks for an improvement this season, and looks at the season with a one game at a time approach. “We don’t want to go 4-6 again and we want to take the next step,” Curcione said. “My mindset as the coach is I prefer to win one game at a time and win them all.” There is a lot more competition for playing time this year and Curcione hopes that sparks some players to compete, or they will lose playing time. But the depth for the team is only a good thing.
DONOVAN CATHOLIC
“We have a lot more competition this year,” Curcione said. “Practice is fun because it’s competitive. The kids are fighting for positions and they know if they don’t play well, somebody else is and is going to take their spot.”

Mater Dei Prep Football Looks to Continue Winning Tradition

MIDDLETOWN – It is no secret that there are high expectations each year on the Mater Dei football program. After coming off a season that saw them go 8-2 and fall short to St. Joseph Hammonton in the Non-Public Group 2 state title game, the Seraphs are looking to end their season with a win. Gunny Bloodgood, Izaiah Henderson, Shittah Sillah, Russell Ferrisi, and Nolan Aloia are going to be the main seniors for Mater Dei this season. Bloodgood is their top receiver, while Henderson (defensive line), Sillah (linebacker), Ferrisi (linebacker) and Aloia will primarily be impacting the defensive side of the ball. Sincere Saunders, another senior, will also play a key role on defense as a safety this season. Third year head coach Dino Mangiero came into the program when this group of seniors were sophomores, so it took a little time for them to adjust to a new coaching staff. But everyone is certainly on the same page now.
junior in Clarence Lewis is going to be a key member for Mater Dei in their secondary. With the high expectations set by Seraph teams in recent years, the team knows what is expected of them. But at the same time, they have instilled a one day at a time mentality that should get them to where they want to be at the end of the season, which is back in the postseason. “I think we have a lot of momentum right now,” Bloodgood said. “We know what our end goal is. We know our talent level and we know where we belong. But we just need to take it week by week and prepare for each team. You can’t look past any opponent.” Mater Dei opens the season with a pair of home games against Pinelands in Week Zero on Aug. 30 and follow that up with a Week One matchup against Matawan on Sept. 8.

“When you bring in a new coach, nobody really knows the culture and how you do things,” Mangiero said. “After a couple years, these kids know how we run things. We really have great kids and they understand what we expect. We expect them to have great character, to work very hard in the classroom and we expect them to do their best on the field. We call that the Mater Dei Way: character, education, and work ethic.” Mater Dei will feature a spread offense once again this year. But after having George Pearson under center the last two years, who is now playing FBS football at Central Michigan University, senior quarterback Rob McCoy will be under center this year for the Seraphs, who is a transfer from Camden Catholic. “He’s very smart and athletic. He’s a great kid and we’re looking for big things from Rob,” Mangiero said. A pair of juniors in Malik Ingram and Isiah Noguera will be the primary running backs for Mater Dei. Both saw action last year as sophomores. Another

RUMSON-FAIR HAVEN HOPES TO RECLAIM STATE TITLE BEHIND VAUNTED DEFEENSE By Mike Ready
Heading into the season it appears senior Tim Kelly will get the start at center and 6-foot-5, 250-pound Spencer Short will take over the right tackle job.
RUMSON – With 3:13 left in last year’s NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III final against Somerville, the Bulldogs took a two-point lead and it appeared their dream of winning a Shore Conference record-tying fifth-straight sectional title in a row would become a reality – especially with a program that lives and dies with its defense.
Senior fullback Alex Maldjian – a three-year starter – steps in as the marquee back this season after having a secondary role to first-team All-Shore running back Peter Lucas a year ago while still rushing for 605 yards on 73 attempts.
Well, sometimes things just don’t work out the way they’re supposed to.
Maldjian is a power-back that runs through tacklers but once in the open field he can take it to the house from anywhere on the field as his 10 touchdowns last season suggest. He also caught seven passes out of the backfield for 161 yards and two touchdowns and should be more of a threat there after working on his speed this offseason.
Somerville drove 66 yards in eight plays to score the game-winning touchdown with 53 seconds remaining, ruining the Bulldogs chance at making history. “It was tough, just a last-second situation,” said senior defensive tackle Henry Sullivan. “But we’re coming back this year. Our goal every year is to be 1-0 in December – that’s all we look forward to. The past is the past.”
“That was a tough loss last year and I definitely haven’t forgotten about it, it’s always on our minds,” Maldjian said of their loss to Somerville. “It’s definitely motivating me for my senior year. In talking with guys who left last year, you don’t want to go out on a loss.”
Eight defensive starters from that game return this year from a group that finished fifth in the Shore in scoring defense at 13.8 points per game, and you can be sure that last Somerville drive is still fresh in the minds of every single one of them and that’s a good thing. A little extra motivation never hurt anyone.
Senior Tommy Solano, junior Pete Crowley and sophomore John Volker are all in the running back mix, but Bulldogs head coach Jerry Schulte is excited about all three.
“The motivation is definitely there for the defense,” said senior linebacker Chris Lanzalotto. “In giving up that game-winning drive in the last minute in the state championship we feel like it was on us, the returning starters. There’s a lot of motivation to improve.” The Bulldogs bring back their entire defensive front four led by the 6-foot-4, 250-pound Sullivan who will be anchoring the line after being named secondteam All-Shore a year ago when he posted 95 tackles and seven sacks. Sullivan has all the physical tools. He can beat you with his speed as an edge rusher, use his brute strength to get into the backfield as a bull rusher or clog the lanes in the running to make the stop. Senior Joe Afflito (5-foot-10, 220 pounds) is back at tackle next to Sullivan after registering 58 tackles and four sacks a year ago. Isaac Vernon (6-foot-2, 225 pounds) returns at defensive end where he posted 22 tackles and three sacks last season and junior Gordon Forsyth (6-foot-2, 210 pounds) will line up opposite Vernon at the other end spot. Forsyth had a breakout sophomore campaign racking up 78 tackles and two sacks and should elevate his game even more in his junior year. Newcomers Kenny Rainey and Von Factor are options in the defensive line rotation as well.
RUMSON-FAIR HAVEN The Bulldogs return two of the top linebackers in the Shore Conference in seniors Keegan Woods and Chris Lanzalotto. Together they combined for a whopping 250 tackles with Woods easily leading the Shore Conference with 155 tackles along with four sacks. Woods was a first-team All-Group III selection as well as first-team All-Shore. Lanzalotto racked up 95 tackles on the way to being named third-team All-Group III and All-Division. Junior Liam Horan has looked solid in camp and will help with the linebacker depth. The secondary was hit hard by graduation, but Rumson does have 6-foot-2, 190-pound junior cornerback Drew Frankle returning following a breakout sophomore campaign when he recorded 38 tackles with one interception. Senior Michael Lizotte will switch to strong safety after a stint at linebacker last season where he had a solid
season with 28 tackles, one sack and pick-six for a touchdown. With his speed, athleticism and toughness, it should be a smooth transition and you can expect him to excel there. Frankle and Lizotte will be asked to help navigate the way for sophomore Ryan Ruane and seniors Ryan Dupree and Brooks Brennan until the secondary takes on its own identity. Offensively, it appears that junior Colin Coles, who backed up starter Dan Harby last season, has won the starting quarterback job after gaining the confidence of his coach with solid summer camp. He’ll have three starting offensive lineman back to help him adjust as a starter, including All-Division tackle Ryan McCann. The 6-foot-4, 260-pound senior left tackle will anchor the line with the help of returning senior guards Evan Davis (5-11, 240 pounds) and Ethan Ardalino (6-2, 220 pounds).
Third-team All-Shore tight end Ian O’Connor returns and will be asked to take on an even bigger role this season with the lack of experience coming in at wide receiver. O’Connor uses his 6-foot-4, 215-pound frame as a standout receiver (34-484-4) and productive blocker which accounts for the interest he’s getting from both FBC and FCS schools. Senior basketball standout Jackson McCarthy decided to give football a shot this fall and has flashed bigtime potential at the wide receiver spot during summer camp. At 6-foot-5, 210 pounds with soft hands, he’ll be another big target for Coles to go to. Senior Andrew Lawless looks to have the starting slot receiver job sewn up while senior Matt Caldwell is penciled in as the No. 2 receiver with juniors Patrick Jamin and Owen McLaughlin and senior Skylar Smith in the mix as well. The Bulldogs will host division rival Saint John Vianney on opening night, Sept. 7. The Lancers will have already opened the season a week earlier in a nondivisional game against Red Bank Catholic. “We have a lot of seniors on this team,” Sullivan said. “We don’t want to go out the way we felt last year. Our goal is to win another championship.”
