THE INVINCIBLE SQUAD

By Chris Melvin, Recruiting Analyst The Jersey Shore has proven to be one of the most productive areas in the state when it comes to college football recruiting. When you mutter the names Shilique Calhoun, Vinny Curry, Neal Sterling, Ryan Malleck, Bennett Jackson, Scott Simonson, Clark Harris, Ryan Spadola, you quickly realize the abundance of talent that currently represents the Jersey Shore in the NFL. Throw in the likes of Mike Gesicki, Garrett Sickles, Quenton Nelson, Saeed Blacknall, Anthony Brown, Sadiq Palmer, Chapelle Cook, Keith Kirkwood, and Brad Henson, and you will realize that the area's current collegiate talent at the Football Bowl Subdivision is something considered beyond impressive. This Shore Conference's Class of 2017 recruiting class can possibly be
the most balanced of all-time. No matter where you look, you are destined to find in-depth talent and prime-time recruits at just about every position. What makes these players so special? The players featured on the cover and center spread of this year’s preview include: * Players with major talent and Ivy League grades.
* Multiple athletes whom possess skills that can allow them to play on either side of ball at the Division 1 level.
* Receivers with skills, speed, hands, size and talent that makes them impossible to cover.
* Defensive backs that have shutdown cover skills along with relentless tackling abilities.
* Quarterbacks that include one of the nation's best and other signal callers that can cause havoc running with the ball just as much as they can throwing.
* A group of fierce linebackers who can hit, run and cover.
* Two siblings on the same high school team headed to the same Division a program on football scholarships. * Proven running backs that have ridiculous speed, quickness, vision, and top-notch agility skills. I describe this group as Invincible, an adjective defined as incapable of being conquered, defeated, or subdued in combat. May I introduce to you

Mater Dei Turns New Leaf, Looks Ahead To Upcoming Season By Michael Ward
The Mater Dei Seraphs haven’t been a significant threat in the football world in recent years. But that might all change, as many important pieces are starting to fall into place for the New Monmouth school that could translate into a successful season.
Lacey Looks to Be Factor In Upcoming Season By Michael Ward
Starting at the very top, Mater Dei has hired an expert in the truest sense of the term in the form of new Head Coach Dino Mangiero. Mangiero, a Staten Island native, found success on the defensive line as a Rutgers University Scarlet Knight from 1976 to 1979. After college he turned pro, playing in the NFL for six seasons for various teams until his retirement in 1987. The depth of knowledge at the helm of the Seraphs will help the team shift into high gear, as they attempt to take the Non-Public Group 2 Division for their own.
Lacey is looking forward in a big way heading into the 2016 Season.
this season as a cornerback, marking his third year on the team.
With a dismal 3-7 2015 now behind them, Lacey is expecting to be in the running for a championship with a retooled offense and a refreshed focus headed into this year’s matchups.
Lacey will have some formidable competition in their division, sharing the Friday Night Lights with the likes of Lakewood and Barnegat, two teams who can be hard to contain from an offensive perspective.
At the center of Lacey’s ground game will be Jason Giresi, who will be making the most of his senior year as the team’s starting running back. The team will also prove to be difficult to score against, with some of the best defensive players in Ocean County playing defense for the Lions.
The Lions will start their season away, playing Toms River South and Point Pleasant Borough to start their season. Then they’ll come home to play Pinelands and open up October with a game against Jackson Liberty.
Matt Milden will be a present force on the D-Line, as well as Chase Stephensen playing a significant role in the backfield as a defensive end, effectively concluding his role as a situational quarterback earlier in his career. John Grosjean will also be returning
As for the pieces on the field, Mater Dei has found themselves in the midst of one of the most talented classes in their history. Quarter-
Their first four opponents will be a good sampling of what’s to come throughout the rest of the season, allowing spectators to evaluate how the team will fare throughout the rest of the season. If all goes according to plan however, Lacey should be in for very strong season.
back George Pearson will be given the task to lead the offense on the gridiron. Along with him will be wide receiver Eddie Lewis and linebacker Marvin Pierre, both of whom are destined for Division 1 schools after the 2016 season. After finishing the 2015 season with a record of 3-7, Mater Dei is easily projected to soar past their output of last season and put together a season with more wins than losses. Making things twice as nice for the Seraphs, their schedule is of a more forgiving nature this year, giving a team in the right condition the ability to open up with some big wins against some of their opponents. Their season will kick off against Keansburg at home, then Mater Dei will hit the road and play Dunellen, Keyport and Highland Park to round out the first month of play. Mater Dei may not be on everyone’s football radar currently, but after this season if all the right elements work together, that could easily change.

New Season, New Coaches For 7 Shore Conference Football Teams By Lindsey Ward
Football may be extremely competitive amongst all of the teams in the Shore Conference, but all of the coaches share similarities -- coaching their players to be the best on and off the field, and a passion for football. Central Regional Central Regional High School has welcomed a new head football coach to their program. Justin Fumando, going into his 12th year of coaching, is Central Regional’s new head coach. Fumando started his coaching career at the age of 23. Before making the move to coach at Central, Fumando had great experience coaching at all levels. From 2005-2007, he was the Defensive Line coach at Kean University. Fumando bounced to Manalapan in 2008 – 2009 as the Defensive Coordinator, and went to Saint John Vianney in 2010. He then went back to Manalapan as the Defensive Coordinator in 2011-2015, where he had tremendous success. Going into the 2016 season, Coach Fumando stated a few of his expectations for his young team were “to be competitive, and to be a blue collar team.” The Central Regional football program has moved this season from the B-South Division to the A-South Division, which is a challenge for both the coaching staff and the players. Fumando expressed, “that moving up from B-South to A-South will be more competitive, expectations will be higher, and we are preparing to play each game like it’s our last.” Fumando could not be happier with how his group of seniors are performing thus far, especially, Michael Bickford, Denis Corbin, Anthony Holloway, and Alex Maj. Central’s football team has a goal of treating each week like a one-game season. Fumando voiced, “I am in a great place, working with a wonderful group of young men and a great administration team who are extremely supportive, and plan on making great strides with this program.” Donovan Catholic This season Donovan Catholic welcomed new head coach Tom Tarver to their football program. Coach Tarver previously coached and taught at Manalapan High School for eight years, when he decided to leave in 2004. Leaving the football program at that time for Tarver was the best decision for him and his family. He went on to be an administrator in the Jackson school district. Once the head coaching position opened 12 years after leaving Manalapan, Tarver couldn’t turn it down; being on the football field is a huge part of his
life. Tarver is now the head of the Donovan Catholic football program, while still being an administrator in Jackson. With the season just around the corner, when Tarver was asked about how the team is looking, he expressed, “we have had a great offensive line during the pre-season. The offensive line is a great group of players who are giving them a chance to run the ball, and stop the run.” Whether coaches like to admit it or not, they encounter obstacles throughout the season. Coach Tarver disclosed, “When it comes to challenges, you have to make sure you work enough, watch enough film, prepare, and know how to handle the challenges correctly.” Coach Tarver and his coaching staff plan on setting the “bar as high as they can” for the players this season and set realist goals such as winning the Conference. Now that the season is approaching, Coach Tarver is looking forward to the first game. “Since being away so long, I always said I missed walking up and down the sideline, wearing the headset and the whole atmosphere of being on the football field.” On September 9, Tarver will have the moment he has been missing -- coaching Donovan Catholic in their first game of the 2016 football season vs. Barnegat.
tant coach at Indiana University and Wagner College. Mangiero’s goal for the season is to take it one day at a time. “All of the players are showing great progress and improve every day,” he said. Coach Mangiero sees a bright future for Mater Dei Prep’s football program.
Captain Jay Hanson “is the vocal leader of the team, and will be a 4th year starter this season,” said Graham. When it comes to the team’s young talent, the two sophomore running backs are showing promise -- Shykim Treadwell and Devin Wollner. Graham disclosed his goals for his team as, “continuing to work harder each day and to make it to the post season.” “I could not be happier coming back with the coaching staff I have surrounding me and the knowledge and dedication
Keyport The Keyport football program has hired somebody extremely close to their program. Jay Graham, who has been coaching for 20 years, was announced as the head coach for the 2016 season. Ever since Graham was young, he was always part of the Shore Conference. Graham, a 1990 graduate of Keyport, played on the football team when they won the State Championship in 1987 and 1988. Before becoming the head coach, he was the assistant coach. While the assistant coach in 2002, Keyport won the State Championship. Going into the season, Graham expects his players and coaching staff to be extremely competitive. He stated, “We plan on doing well if we all stay healthy throughout season.” On the Keyport team, Graham mentioned a few who have all played together since Pop Warner. That group of seniors includes, Erik Nellis, Cody Young, Zachary Frick, and Chris Hogrefe. Christian Smith is a player showing great promise this season; he made 22 out of 23 extra points last season, and “is looking great,” according to Graham. Junior
they have to the program,” said Graham. Now that the offseason has come and gone, the team is looking forward to their first game against Point Pleasant Beach on September 9. Mater Dei Prep Mater Dei Prep has brought in new head coach Dino Mangiero to bring light to their program. Since retiring from the NLF, Mangiero has been coaching football for the past 25 years, but this is his first position in the Shore Conference. Mangiero’s experience includes head coach at Brooklyn’s Poly Prep and assis-
Point Pleasant Boro The head coaching position may be new to Coach Matt Cilento, but the Point Pleasant Boro football program is not. He will be going into his eighth year coaching and teaching. Before obtaining the head coaching position, Cilento, was the assistant coach for the past seven years, and out of those seven, he was the defensive coordinator for four years. He had the pleasure of coaching under Sean Henry for five years. When Henry decided to leave the program, the administration, and community trusted Cilento to take over the team. Point Pleasant Boro ended their 2015 season with an overall record of 8-2. Going into the 2016 season the team is very young, due to losing eight starters on both sides of the ball. “The young men are stepping up to the opportunity, and giving it all they have,” stated Cilento. Losing a majority of your starters is challenging in itself. Every team faces their obstacles throughout the season, and learns to overcome them as the season goes on. “They learn through the fire and experience of playing,” Cilento said of his young squad. When asked if any players are showing great promise thus far, he said, “Senior wide receiver Hayden Frey has been starting at Point Boro for the last three years and doing great. Frey has also been getting looked at by Ivy League and Patriot schools in hopes of continuing to play.” The goal for Coach Cilento and his team this season is to be in the top three in the B-South Division, as well as show that they are competitive, wise, and bring a lot to the table. Coach Cilento and his team are looking forward to every game, but two in particular -- the first being against Lacey, on September 16, who is in the tough A-South Division, and secondly against Lakewood on October 14th, “who is always a top competitor,” stated Cilento. Rumson-Fair Haven Rumson-Fair Haven has now one of the most decorated head coaches in Jerry Schulte. He has been coaching football for 42 years, and has coached previously at two other Shore Conference schools. Schulte was the head
football coach at Mater Dei Prep for five years, and their wrestling coach for 10. After Mater Dei, Schulte went to Wall, where he coached football for 10 years and wresting for three. Once leaving Wall, Schulte found his home on the coaching staff of Rumson-Fair Haven as the defensive coordinator. Now going into his twelfth year at RFH, he is head coach. “Rumson is a great place to be,” exclaimed Schulte. Looking forward into the season the Rumson football program has a lot of returning players. “Not one player stands out more then the other, everyone is very excited and are doing extremely well,” said Schulte. His goal for the season is “to keep the program going strong like it has for the past decade.” The RumsonFair Haven football team “doesn’t let one game get a head of another,” expressed Coach Schulte, in hopes of a successful 2016 season. Toms River East Toms River East has named one of their own, Kyle Sandberg, as the new head football coach. Coach Sandberg is a 2005 graduate of Toms River East, and has been an assistant coach for the past six years. “Being announced as head coach was a dream come true of mine since ‘05 when I left,” he said. A new head coach typically has goals in mind for the upcoming season. That goals for Coach Sandberg is for his seniors to “have an unforgettable season, and to change the culture of East football.” Toms River East’s seniors have gone 0-27 throughout their high school careers. Sandberg wants nothing more than to bring light back to East football, and for his seniors to win, and wear their jerseys with pride. Going into the 2016 season, Toms River East team had lost a number of players from the previous year. Of the returning players, Sandberg noted Jake Gilligan, Tommy Ferrante, Lou Gallo, Evan Otten, and Jake Goodball, as players showing great promise thus far. Over the course of Coach Sandberg’s first season, when asked about what challenges he may face he stated, “We are already in the challenging A-South division. I want the players to believe, though they may have been in the dark for a long time, they need to believe, we are in a different time now, believing is everything!” The Toms River East football team and senior class are hungry for their first win of the season. They will play Central Regional, who is new to the A-South division, on September 9. Toms River East football is in Coach Kyle Sandberg’s blood; he is all in with making East football strive for success.
Rockets Set For Launch in 2016 Season By Michael Ward
When the beginning of the 2015 football season rolled around, Raritan was largely written off as a team with some bright spots, but as a squad that would ultimately be defeated in the playoffs by a more established school. The only thing that was established was Hazlet’s dominance over all of Group 3, squeaking out a few unprecedented wins in the early rounds then showing impressive heart and creativity in the championship game. The game against the Lincoln Lions of Jersey City was the most thrilling in the state by any standard. Reporters from all outlets who were stationed at Rutgers University to cover other championship games, were huddled around laptops, watching the livestream of the scrappy team from Hazlet pull out all the stops to defeat a determined opponent at Kean University.
After an unprecedented amount of successful onside kick returns and creative use of RB Derick Ernst’s speed and QB Marc Carnivale’s arm, the Raritan Rockets were victorious with a 28-26 win no one saw coming. This year, Head Coach Anthony Petruzzi looks to keep his team on top, as the Rockets have an excellent crop of rising seniors to mold into yet another winning team. Marc Carnivale will return as starting quarterback to kick off the 2016 season. Carnivale’s arm is one of the best in the region, with 1,598 passing yards under his belt and threw 16 completions for touchdowns. His accuracy and consistency will be key for the Rockets to stay on the top of Group 3. Another player to watch will be Ryan Dickens, an effective LB with 127 tackles under his belt who recently committed to UConn for football.
Matt Thompson will also be a player opposing O-Line and quarterbacks will have to look out for throughout the season. This D-Liner boasts of seven sacks through last season, giving Raritan’s defense an effective bite. The schedule for Raritan will test their abilities throughout the season, but a challenge is nothing new to this organization, as they masterfully proved last season. Raritan will kick off their season on September 9 with their opening game against Rumson-Fair Haven. After that, they’ll face local rival Saint John Vianney, Wall and Donovan Catholic to round out September. It will only be a matter of days before we find out if the Raritan Rockets reach the stars for a second season in a row, or burn out on the launch pad.
OCEAN TOWNSHIP’S PICKETT HAS ONE GOAL IN MIND; A SPARTAN CHAMPIONSHIP By Mike Ready
OCEAN TOWNSHIP - The Spartans (9-2, 5-1) lost two games last season with both losses to Red Bank Regional coming in close games that could’ve easily gone either way. Unfortunately for Ocean Township, their second loss to the Bucs came in the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III semifinals eliminating them in the state semifinals for the second year in a row.
guard. The tackles will be manned by senior Chris Vivian (6-1, 230) and junior Lawrence Bettan (6-4, 260) with the former being a two-year starter. Three of the offensive linemen will play both ways and start on the defensive line as well. Mazza and Worthington will be at tackle with Vivian at end. Junior Anthony Russomano (6-0, 220) at the other end spot. Wilson and Bettan will be in the defensive line rotation as well.
“This team is definitely good enough to take the next step in the playoffs and win a championship,” said senior quarterback Kenny Pickett, lamenting the reality of their consecutive semifinal losses. “It seems like my whole high school career has ended in the semifinals; we’re tired of it. Our goal as a team is to bring a state title back to Ocean Township.”
Tedesco moves off the defensive line this season and will start at middle linebacker and call signals with Levy, Moran and junior Ryan Jenks (5-11, 200) battling for the two linebacker spots. Pickett will be back at cornerback this season with Aldarelli back at safety where he picked off two passes a year ago. Pena, Krug and Alex Bryant will fill the other spots in the secondary.
Pickett (6-2, 190) is a three-year starter and University of Pittsburgh commit who was a third team All-Shore selection last season after passing for 1,797 yards and 19 touchdowns and picking up another 336 yards on the ground with five TDs. For his career, Pickett has a 60 percent completion rate with 3,075 passing yards and 30 TD passes.
“I think we’re going to be very good this year,” Tedesco said. “We have a lot of experience on both sides of the ball and we have a good mixture of young guys with experience that we expect to step up and have a good season.”
Despite the loss of first team All-Shore RB/DB Tyler Thompson to graduation, Pickett is excited about his offense’s potential to light up the score board. “We’re looking really good,” Pickett said of his offense. “We have a lot of weapons that I can spread the ball to. We have a lot of good running backs and our line has been protecting well and run blocking well, so we’re heading in the right direction right now.” Pickett’s main weapon is senior wide receiver Joey Aldarelli (6-2, 200) another three-year starter. He’s a big target with great hands that can stretch a defense long and is also a super route runner out of the slot. Aldarelli caught 33 Pickett passes a year ago for 440 yards and seven touchdowns. The Spartans’ offense will primarily break the huddle in a four receiver spread offensive set. Along with Aldarelli, senior Mike Krug, freshman Sean Rossback and Cam Thompson look to be the starters. Pickett is fired
up about the potential Rossback - the younger brother of graduated AllDivision pick Tyler Rossback - has shown. Junior Jasher Pena (5-8, 165), sophomore Billy Levy (6-0, 175) and senior Anthony Tedesco (6-0, 225) will be the running backs by committee with Tedesco lining up at tight end along with sophomore Ryan Moran , a stud wrestler for the Spartans in the winter.
It doesn’t get any easier within the division this season for the Spartans as the Class B North has gone through a transition. Colts Neck, Neptune and Red Bank have been replaced by Middletown South (the NJ.com preseason No.1 team), Middletown North (who lost to Middletown South in the N2, G4 semifinal last season and brings back a ton of talent) and a vastly improved Manasquan team.
Up front, Ocean Township returns two starters along with two players who were in the offensive line rotation last season.
“We know it’s going to be even tougher with Middletown South and North in the division,” Head Coach Don Klein said. “We’ve been using our scrimmages to get ready for the B North schedule and working hard. We have a lot of veterans who have played in big games before and we’ll be counting on the young guys stepping up, but we’ll be leaning on our core players to set the tone and show what it takes to play football the Ocean Township way.”
Junior Andrew Worthington (5-10, 220) gets the start at center with senior Anthony Mazza (5-10,230) and junior Christian Wilson (5-11, 210) at
The Spartans began their quest for their first state title since 2005 on Friday, September 2 at home versus Monmouth Regional.

Jersey Coast Academy is JUCO Program on the Rise
Jersey Coast Academy was established in 2011, and had their first game in 2012 as a JUCO (Junior College) sports program. The program is currently led by well-known coach Calvin Thompson, who lead Point Boro to a New Jersey state title in 2005 and multiple conference championships and three State finals in his four-year tenure with the Panthers.
they love, at an affordable price in a great state and at the Jersey Shore," added Thompson. "This is quite attractable to students and their families."
And Thompson has had the support of many board members and coaches with the same goal of making the program and its student athletes positively noticed by all.
Now Thompson's goal is to make the JCA Jaguars program (which is based out in Toms River) one of the top JUCO programs in the country. Since JCA's inaugural season, the Jaguars have garnered the respect of their competitors including Navy, Army, Wagner, and Division III powerhouse Wesley College of Delaware, allowing them to form into a competitive and respectable program on the Junior College level. Thompson's coaching staff includes assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Norman King, running backs coach L. Marty Johnson, offensive line coach Norris Daus, linebackers coach Kyle Coleman, defensive line coach Mark Deppen, as well as recruiting coordinator Chris Melvin. Some of JCA's top players include many familiar local names, as well as players from across the region. These include current players -- 2015 All State defensive lineman Dashon Copes (Toms River North), defensive-back Dion Williams (Long Branch), athlete Javion Harris (Brick Township), Deion Miller (Sayreville HS/Lincoln University), lineman Alec Mahon
"Our motto at JCA is ‘No Student-Athlete Left Behind,’" said Monwell Brown, the Prgram’s Athletic Director.

"Our goal is transitioning student-athletes into leaders and champions, while simultaneously empowering

men and women to be successful within competitive environments while in college and throughout their lives," said Thompson. "Each student-athlete that comes through our doors is given an opportunity to start a new chapter in their life. Earning an education, playing the sport
Brick Memorial over the past couple of seasons has been a strong, competitive school, making wins over the Mustangs come at a high premium. But Brick Memorial’s football team has largely been overshadowed due to in large part an excellent and crowded A-South Division. While finishing the season 9-3 and making it all the way to Central Jersey Group 4 Finals, the Mustangs haven’t found themselves at the center of the universe of Ocean County Football. But they are inching ever closer to being one of the top, well-respected teams in their division. One reason for this is that when the Mustangs are at their best, they’re nearly unstoppable. In most of their 2015 wins, the scores for those games saw huge double digit differentials.
"Jersey Coast Academy Football intends to aid in the development of its student-athletes to win in the classroom, football field and in the community. Our young men will earn an associate's degree; improve their overall athletic abilities while learning valuable life lessons. Our program will act as a gateway for their betterment. Our end goal is to help each student-athlete secure an athletic scholarship to a four-year college/university, which best suits their needs, in order for them to continue their academic and athletic endeavors," added Brown. "It's all about our students elevation and success in becoming what they want become and reaching their goals." Jersey Coast Academy has agreed to a broadcasting partnership with the JUCO Sports Network. JUCO Sports Network will be live broadcasting all JCA home and away football games and events (www.jucosportnetwok.com).
Take three consecutive games from September and October as evidence of how Brick Memorial can decimate their opposition: 52-20 against Toms River North; 48-0 against Lacey; 44-6 against Toms River East. The list goes on. Brick Memorial’s offense comes in to make their opponents look as if they can’t catch water falling out of a boat; their defense has stopped everything in its path while the coaching staff has seemingly broke it all down to a science. If Brick Memorial can continue their success on both sides of the football and keep the pressure on during clutch situations, there’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that the Mustangs can continue to pummel opponents, find their way into the playoffs in great position and possibly get a rematch with Jackson Memorial who got them best of them in their season-ending game.

RUMSON-FAIR HAVEN’S PURSUIT OF FOURTH STRAIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP HARD TO BE IGNORED By Mike Ready
RUMSON – Last season Rumson-Fair Haven won their third consecutive state sectional title beating then undefeated and Red Bank Regional, 21-0, in the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III final.
Second team All-Shore dual threat quarterback and Colgate University commit Mike O’Connor (6-2, 185) is back for his senior year after being behind center since his freshman year and all three championships. Last season, O’Connor ran for 1,063 yards (88.6 yards/game) and nine touchdowns and passed for an additional 674 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Spanning those three championship seasons, the Bulldogs have accumulated a very impressive 30-6 record on the way to winning those three titles. Now, with the upcoming season rapidly approaching, Rumson knows it has the opportunity to become the first Shore Conference team to win four state titles in a row since Middletown South won an unprecedented four straight from 20032006. The Shore Conference record for consecutive state titles belongs to Manalapan which won five in a row under late Head Coach Vic Kubu between 1998 and 2002. “We’re going to do what we’ve always done every year, and that’s play Rumson football,” firstyear Head Coach Jerry Schulte said. “Teams know what to expect when they come in here. We don’t care who we’re playing, we’re going to come out and play physical football. That’s what our seniors have always been taught and that mentality has always been passed down to our sophomores and juniors.” Rumson is also looking to win their first divisional championship since 2011 when they won the Class A Central before losing to Matawan, 3-0, in the CJGII final. The Bulldogs bring back 11 starters, including seven on defense, and appear to have enough talent on both sides of the ball this season to contend for a fourth title. But as it is for most high school football programs, there are some key pieces gone to graduation that need to be addressed. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs were also dealt a couple of crushing blows before the season even got under way when 6-6, 215 pound WR/DE Elijiah McAllister tore his ACL at a basketball camp this summer and is gone for the season. McAllister had already accumulated numerous FBS offers and was expected to explode on both sides of the ball this season. And senior running back Bryan Hess, who rushed for 831 yards and scored nine TDs including two in last year’s state final, is out due to a lacrosse injury. The good news for the Bulldogs is that middle linebacker Mike Ruane – arguably one of the top de-
“We might try to throw the ball a little more this year,” O’Connor said. “But whatever is working, that’s what we’ll go with.” The Bulldogs’ top two running backs from last season are back and along with O’Connor will have the ability to run opposing teams out of the stadium. Senior Matt Veccharelli (5-11, 190) led the team in rushing attempts with 153 for 756 yards and seven touchdowns. Juniors Pete Lucas and Gavin Pomphrey will fight for time in the backfield as well.
fensive players in the state – returns for his senior season after leading the state in tackles with 153 along with six sacks, two interceptions, two fumble recoveries and a defensive touchdown. He was a unanimous first team All-State selection a year ago and this season was named to the USA Today’s first team All-USA preseason team and has already committed to the University of Massachusetts. “My goal is for us to win four straight,” Ruane said. “All that individual stuff comes after that.” Ruane (6-1, 220) is the only returning starting linebacker in the Bulldogs’ 4-3 defensive scheme but the Bulldogs will be breaking in a pair of sophomore linebackers on the outside in Keegan Woods and Chris Lanzalotto (6-2, 190) that have impressed in preseason scrimmages. The defensive line will have two starters back and has the potential to be dominant. Senior Liam Adams (6-0,265) returns at tackle after leading the team with eight sacks a year ago, with 41 tackles and a fumble recovery. “Liam is a one tough kid,” Ruane said. “He’s everywhere on the field.”
Senior James Rue steps in at the other tackle spot as a first-year starter with junior Chase Pfrang backat defensive end. Pfrang recorded 23 tackles a year ago including a huge sack in the state final. Senior Jack Woods gets the opportunity to start at the other end position and is big and fast at 6-foot-2, 240 pounds. First team All-Shore strong safety senior Mike Murdock (5-10, 195), who had a monster year in 2015 with 114 tackles, two interceptions, a sack and a forced fumble, will again be the field-general in a secondary that returns two starters and another with a ton of experience. “Mike hits like a truck,” Ruane said. “He’s the best. The kid is way too good not to have an offer (college) yet.” Senior James Melia (5-11, 200) returns at free safety following a solid junior campaign which saw him record 20 tackles with two sacks, while senior Pat Russo (5-10,180) is back at cornerback after registering 41 tackles and an interception; big things are expected of Russo this season. Senior Ryan Tuorto (5-10, 165) steps into the other corner spot in his first year as a starter.
The wide receiver spot needs to be restocked and it starts with senior Tyler Pierson (6-5, 200) who saw limited action a year ago. His length and athletic ability – he started on the Bulldogs basketball team last season – has O’Connor excited about Pierson’s potential. “Tyler’s a big target with great hands,” O’Connor said. “We have a lot of guys that are ready to step up.” Seniors Trevor Caruso and Jack Oberlie (6-0, 182) are in the mix for starting spots at wideout and senior Colin Pavluk looks to have secured the starting tight end spot. O’Connor will have three of his starting offensive linemen back including massive second team AllShore guard Tim Leonard (6-4, 285), junior guard Justin Johnson (6-2, 220) and junior tackle Nate Raphan, a 6-foot-3, 320 pound road grader. Sophomore Ryan McCann (6-3, 190) and Ethan Ardolino are both looking good in scrimmages and fighting for the final starting spot at tackle. Leonard will also see spot duty on the defensive line especially in goal line and short-yardage situations. The Bulldogs will open their title defense on Friday, September 9 at home versus Raritan with a 7:00 p.m. scheduled kickoff. “That would be crazy to win four in a row,” O’Connor said. “This is our last year together and we’re all just trying to go out winning one more.”

Going into last year’s Non-Public Final at Rutgers University, nothing could stop the Saint John Vianney Lancers. The team out of Holmdel was one of the few undefeated schools going into their final game. For 11 games straight, the Lancers shut down every opponent that they faced. Unfortunately, their hopes of a championship and a perfect season were dashed when they met DePaul of Wayne on the gridiron in Piscataway. The Lancers found themselves outmuscled and overmatched in a game that could have been played better from the perspective of SJV. This year, the Lancers look to focus on establishing the same dominance over their regular season competition as they did throughout the 2015 season and push through the playoffs and championship game to give them a football season they won’t soon forget. Saint John Vianney going into the 2016 season will trust their offense to the first-year Varsity starter Matthew

DeGennaro. The move up to Varsity and filling one of the big voids left in the wake of departing seniors will be a definite test for DeGennaro, who himself will now be a senior. Micah Clark and Jamaal Beaty will be forces to deal with on the offensive line. The stand out offensive tackle and offensive guard will be tasked with protecting their quarterback against tough opposing defenses and carving a lane for the Lancers to drive the ball on the ground. For the early part of their season, the Lancers will be playing rivals close to home, as they’ll face off against the Matawan Huskies, Raritan Rockets and then face Red Bank Regional for what will be a competitive battle. SJV will end their first month of play with a matchup at Brick Township. With enough focus, drive and determination, Saint John Vianney might repeat their perfect regular season and take the Group Championship with unmatched authority.

JACKSON MEMORIAL HOPES TO RIDE GAWLICK TO THIRD STRAIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP By Mike Ready
JACKSON – After winning their first three games last season by a combined score of 124-10 and coming off a state championship season in 2014, Jackson Memorial lost four of their next six games entering the playoffs. Included in that string of games was a 28-7 pasting at the hands of Class A South rival Brick Memorial in the sixth game of the season and a 21-10 loss to Red Bank Catholic in the final game of the regular season. Those mounting losses cast a pall over the Jaguars’ chances of repeating as CJGIV champions and becoming the program’s first team to win back-to-back championships since the 2000-2001 seasons. Nonetheless, the Jaguars never doubted themselves and embarked on one of the most unforeseen and unforgettable playoff runs in program history. It ended with a 4214 beat down of Brick Memorial in the CJGIV final that not only avenged their earlier loss to the Mustangs, but gave them the coveted consecutive state titles they had worked so hard for as well as the program’s fifth overall sectional title. When asked about his team’s chances of getting that third title in a row, Head Coach Walt Krystopik said, “I think just getting ready for the Class A South is enough of a challenge. They know about the level of competition week in and week out in the A South, and it’s how they deal with it, that will determine how well they do in the Central Jersey.” Luckily for the Jaguars, one of the best allaround players in the state and the player most responsible for their epic playoff run, running back/safety Mike Gawlick, is back for his senior season.
Gawlick (5-8, 165) was a one-man wrecking crew in the playoffs, rushing for 590 yards and seven touchdowns. In the championship game, Gawlick accounted for 365 allpurpose yards and four touchdowns with 210 yards rushing and three scores, a 49-yard touchdown pass, a 58-yard reception and a 50-yard kick return. For the season Gawlick was a first team AllShore pick finishing the season with 1,562 yards rushing and 17 touchdowns on an average of 7.3 yards per carry. He was also selected to the NJ.com first team All-State defensive team after recording 65 tackles at safety. “Mike’s looking good,” Krystopik said. “Now it’s just a matter of getting into shape going two ways. He needs to get those back-toback carries to get into game shape.” Juniors Justin Martin-Culet (5-7, 185) and Tom Pallone (5-6, 185) will back up Gawlick. Senior Dan Barker (6-1, 200) is back at quarterback after he went down with an injury midway through last season and has looked excellent in preseason scrimmages. With his experience from a year ago and his knowledge of the system on another level, Krystopik’s confidence in Barker is steadily climbing. “Dan’s in a leadership role,” Krystopik said. “He knows what to expect now. He’s adjusted to the speed of varsity football and that should take him to the next level.” Barker and Gawlick will also benefit from having four returning starters on the offensive line including All-Division tackle Joe Hurle, a 6-2, 255 pounder who excels at both opening holes and protecting the pocket. Seniors Larry Richardson (6-0, 225) at left guard, Sean Martin at right guard and
Mitch Mills (6-3, 260) at left tackle all started last season, while senior Magnus McCaleb (6-1,205) and Devin Martinez (5-11,270) are competing for a starting assignment at center. “I love blocking for Mikey,” Richardson said. “It’s the best thing in the world. And Dan did a great job for us last season and he’s doing exponentially better this year.” The wide receivers coming back all have game experience but will be first-time starters this season. Senior speedster Jordan Caldwell (5-6, 140) is a star on the track team and is a legitimate deep threat that will keep defenses from stacking the box. Senior Trevor Louro (6-0, 175) and junior Devynn Lee are the most likely candidates to start at wideout with junior Brandan Hurch (6-0, 200) leading a group of candidates for the starting tight end spot. Defensively, the line returns three players with starting experience. Both Richardson and Martin are returning starters on the defensive line as well as the offensive line with Richardson lining up at the week-side end spot and Martin at strong-side tackle. Senior Jimmy Zapata (5-8, 274) is a returning starter at tackle spot and senior Philip Jenkins gets the start strong-side end. “We’re bringing back the majority of both lines,” Richardson said. “And it all starts up front.” The linebacking crew must replace last season’s top two tacklers, Adante Davis and Nick Papandrea, but bring back All-Division strong-side linebacker Zack Lubertazzi to soften the blow. Lubertazzi is a highly underrated player that had a monster season a year ago when he recorded 93 tackles, 13.5
TFL, 5.5 sacks, one interception and a forced fumble. He’ll be joined by two first-year starters at linebacker who do have some game experience. Martin-Culet will start on the week-side and Pallone in the middle. “We got great junior linebackers stepping in to replace those guys,” Richardson said. “They rotated last season and got varsity experience in state championship games. I’m very confident in them being able to step in and fill it up.” Obviously, Gawlick is the leader in the secondary that will bring in three new starters
in Louro at safety and Lee at one corner and junior A.J.Tolmachewich at the other corner spot. The Jaguars begin their quest to become the first team in program history to win three state titles in row on Friday, September 9 at Jackson Liberty with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m. “My expectations for this year are just the same as last year,” Richardson said. “Do it again. There’s a lot of confidence and leadership on this team. We’re moving forward, the team’s morale has been great and we’re all working hard.”
TOMS RIVER NORTH IS THE REAL DEAL BUT TEAM’S NOT TAKING ANYTHING FOR GRANTED By Mike Ready
TOMS RIVER – Three years ago (2013) Toms River North went 1-9 when the bulk of this year’s team were just freshmen. In 2014 they improved to 6-5 and last season they captured the school’s sixth state championship and first since 2007, recording an impressive 11-1 record.
said. “So that’s going to be pretty difficult to do. It benefits me because when I’m outside of the pocket I have the option of running or throwing the ball so defenses have to key on that not knowing what I’m going to do. ” “It’s amazing to play with a dual quarterback like Mike,” Carrington said. “He opens up so many lanes for us to run. Once you open up the run, defenses have to keep people in the box leaving cover three up top with Bryce and me in single coverage and it spreads it out for Mike. We’ve both been starting since we were freshmen so our chemistry is there.”
After absorbing a head-scratching 52-20 loss to Class A South rival Brick Memorial in the second game of the season a year ago, the Mariners reeled off 10 straight wins to grab a piece of the Class A South title before defeating Williamstown, 14-7, for the NJSIAA South Jersey Group V title.
Defensively, the Mariners are led by All-Division linebacker Pete LaQuaglia (6-0, 205) who led the team with 110 tackles including 13 TFL and four sacks and a fumble return for a touchdown. Blackwell (40 tackles, six TFL and a sack) will join him at linebacker in the Mariners 5-2-4 scheme. Day will see time at linebacker as well.
They completed their epic season ranked third in the Shore Conference and No.15 in the state in both season-ending polls. This season, with seven returning starters on both sides of the ball, Toms River North is not only primed to repeat as state champions but has the chance to become the first team in program history to win back-to-back state titles.
“We’re just looking to keep that fire that we had last year,” LaQuaglia said. “Bring it back to some of these young guys and show them how we play defense at North. After last year, we just need to humble ourselves and just come out and play ball.”
Second team All-Shore quarterback Mike Husni is back behind center after a spectacular junior season which saw him throw for 1,368 yards and 13 touchdowns while rushing for an additional 1,267 yards and 18 touchdowns. “Last year is in the past so this year we haven’t proved anything yet,” Husni said. “So we’re just going to go week-by-week and try to go 1-0 every week, try to conquer A South, and hopefully get into the tournament.” The dual-threat quarterback is blessed with a number of dynamic skill-position players returning and an experienced offensive line that returns four starters and five seniors that are not only massive, but physical and mean. Will Sagarese (6-1, 260), a three-year starter, returns at center to anchor the offensive line and call the signals while Esiah Santamria (6-0, 280) is back at guard with Chris Renda (6-2,265) stepping in at the opposite guard spot in place of graduated first team All-Shore guard Luke Butera. Tackle Matt Melamed (6-5, 290), a two-year starter, is a road grader that the Mariners will rely on to pave the way for their running game along with returner Dan Benisti (6-1, 280) at the other tackle spot. Juniors Bill Dowd (6-3, 295) and Bryan Schlesinger (5-11,255) are in the running for playing time as well. The Mariners will need to replace graduated second team All-Shore running back Asante Moorer’s 1584 yards and 17 touchdowns but feel they have the weapons to do so.
Daryn Blackwell will be counted on in the backfield to pick up most of the slack after a solid sophomore season which saw him pick up 284 yards on the ground with a six-yard per carry average while scoring four touchdowns. He’s a 6-2, 245 pound downhill bruiser that will simply run over would-be tacklers. He’ll be joined in the backfield by Manasquan transfer Parker Day, who had 125-yards rushing and a 78-yard kickoff return against Barnegat last season. Day (5-10,195) is fast and powerful and will be used out of the slot position. Others in the running back mix include junior Mickey Maldonado and freshman Nasir Calhoun. Husni will have plenty of options at wide receiver including six-foot-three, 170-pound second team All-Shore pick Darrion Carrington (35 receptions for 672 yards, 5 TDs) and six-foot-one, 170-pound All-Division selection Bryce Watts (21 receptions for 287 yards, 3 TDs) - the deep threat on the team. Seniors Kenny Cook (five receptions for 133, 2 TDs) and Jaden Rhoden along with juniors Andrew Daniluk and Anthony Urso will all be vying for playing time. Senior Dan Madsen will be at tight end and will see time at running back as well. “Teams are going to have to stop our running and passing game,” Husni
Senior stalwart Joe Nardoza (61 tackles, four TFL) moves to nose tackle and will attempt to fill the void left by All-Stater Dashon Copes. He’ll be joined on the line by senior Cole LaBatch (6-2, 270) who had three sacks in three games a year ago before going out for the year with an injury. Senior Joe Bisogno (6-1, 180) and juniors Dowd and Erik Kelly (6-2, 235) complete the defensive line. Schlesinger, Madsen and Renda could see action on the line also. The defensive backfield is stacked with speed and power. Watts – a Rutgers University commit at cornerback – Carrington (14 tackles, three INTs) and Maldonado (45 tackles, INT) are all returning starters that are only going to get better while giving opposing quarterbacks nightmares. Depending on how things shake out, Husni will be in the backfield as well with Daniluk, Cook, Urso and junior Bishop Curry in the mix. Senior Kyle Bayha is back to take on the punting and kickoff responsibilities this fall. “Our first goal is to win the A South,” Husni said. “Every week the target on our back is going to get bigger and we know that. So we’re just going to go out and play our brand of football.” The Mariners open at home versus Southern on Friday, September 9 at 7:00 p.m.

baltowski make up the defensive line and will be in the offensive line mix as well.
TEAMS LISTED IN ORDER OF PREDICTED FINISH
HOWELL: Versatile junior Eddie Morales gets the starting nod at quarterback this season after splitting time at the position last season when he passed for 560 yards and six TDs. Senior Mekai Gandy is back and healthy after rushing for 231 yards on 31 attempts before getting hurt. He gets the start with senior Colin McGrath and Bobby Cavallero also getting touches. Three-year captain and starter Dan Cacciature (12-135, TD) heads a group of wideouts battling for jobs including seniors Dan McAleavey, Joe Pepe, athletic 6-2 junior Nasiem Brentley plus Pat Handy who handles the kicking as well.
CLASS A NORTH OUT: Middletown South, Middletown North IN: Neptune, Colts Neck MANALAPAN: Seniors Mike Cardinale (5-11,280) and Joe Sicolo (5-10, 225) and junior Trevor Radosevich (6-2, 250) will be counted on to anchor the offensive line. Junior Naim Mayfield (22 carries for 162 yards, 500 all-purpose yards, 6 TDs) will get the bulk of the carries and is ready for a break out this season. Battering ram Chris Maksimik (510, 220) returns at fullback after rushing for 122 yards and eight TDs in short-yardage and goal-line situations while catching 10 balls for 122 yards and two TDs out of the backfield. Junior QB Luke Coricione is back behind center after sitting out the first four games last season after transferring from RBC. Coricione threw for 589 yards and six TDs in five games, passing for over 100 yards in four starts. Temple commit L.J. Holder (22-391-4 TDs), 6-4 senior Scott Scherzer (10-232) and junior Symir Blacknall (4-27) give Coricione a trio of receivers ready to explode. Defensively, Cardinale (33 tackles, 5 TFL, 2 sacks) returns on the line with Sicolo and Radosevich doing double-duty as well. Senior Joe Pimentel (49 tackles, 8 TFL, INT), junior Sal Tardogno (49 tackles, 4 TFL, INT) and sophomore Tommy Pearce (33 tackles in four games) are back at linebacker while seniors Cody Wiener (33 tackles) and Sean Kiniburgh (32 tackles, INT, 7 PD) return as starters in the secondary. NEPTUNE: Senior All-Division performers WR/CB Kahmer Rice and RB/FS Marvin Morgan headline what could be a very explosive offense. Rice (62, 185) had 16 receptions for 532 yards and five TDs for an eye-popping 33.25 yards/catch average and along with seniors Fabrice Banbaata (6-4, 200) and Jules Calhoun, Jr. (6-2, 2-0) gives senior QB Chase Fairbanks three tall, fast and athletic targets. Morgan runs 10.87 100-yard dash and will be in the backfield mix with seniors Isaih Mooney and Jemauri James with Bryce Bradford at fullback and linebacker. Seniors Gary Hoover (6-3, 294), Damien Valentine (6-2, 225), Naji Jordan and Keven Jean (6-5, 230) will play on both sides of the ball on the offensive and defensive lines. Valentine recorded a team-high nine sacks at end last season and you can expect him to wreak havoc on opposing QBs this season. Seniors Leon Hughes (60, 185), David Seth Harrington and Benjamin Morales (5-11, 205) will be at linebacker with Rice and Morgan and Mooney heading up the secondary. FREEHOLD: Junior Matt Desilva looks to have the edge in the quarterback battle but whoever does wins the job will have 6-3 sophomore Matt Kraus (15-281-4 TDs) and 6-2 senior Markee Gill (10151) to throw to. Freehold brings back established players in key spots on both sides of the ball led by junior RB/FS Ashante Worthy. Worthy was a third team All-Shore pick after rushing for 1,308 yards and 12 TDs and 272 receiving yards averaging 7.9 yards rushing and 19.1 yards per catch. He was just as good on defense recording 35 tackles, four sacks, three FFs, and two INTs). FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP: Senior Charles Sabbagh is the likely candidate to replace last year’s senior QB Jack O’Brien after getting some playing time last season going 11-of-21 for 116 yards and two scores. The Patriots bring back a host of receiving threats including All-Division junior WR/S Anthony Lotti ( 25-313, 4 TDs receiving and 29-258-3 TDs rushing) and fellow juniors Tyrique Hall (22-265, 2 TDs) and Adrian Rybaltowski (44-523-5 TDs). Junior running back Max Nowak is back after grabbing 23 balls through the air for 281 yards and a TD and rushing for 271 yards on 58 carries and two TDs with Mike Canname getting some carries as well. Seniors Matt Cruz (6-3, 265) and Jon Lucas (6-3, 245) return on the offensive line with Jake White, Andrew Higgins and Zach Gonzalez in the OL mix as well. On defense, seniors Riley Cowley and Jordan Jones, along with juniors E r i c Quartey and Damian Ry-
MARLBORO: Senior running back Cameron Caorsi rushed for 1,036 yards and eight touchdowns a year ago and Marlboro brings back a veteran offensive line to pave the way for Caorsi. Senior center Riley Keating (6-2, 300) and junior tackle Chris Manginelli (6-5, 240) will anchor the offensive line that will also open holes for junior running back Johnny Helff who had 174 yards rushing and four TDs a year ago. Senior fullback Ryan Cassidy will supply blocking as well as tough yardage as the Mustangs search for a starting quarterback that looks to be between seniors Jared Wright and Andrew Abelow. Whoever ends up starting will have 6-5 junior wide receiver Justin Marcus (18215, TD) to throw to. COLTS NECK: The Cougars bring back their leading rusher, senior Carmen Catena (112-534), and quarterback Hayden Volk, who split time there last season, going 37-of-101 for 466 yards and three TDs. Senior wide receivers Matt Volk (16-248-2 TDs) and Bryce Campbell (12-185) return providing Volk with two dependable options at wideout. Junior Evan Imbesi and senior Vincent Gargiulo anchor the offensive line. The linebacking crew will be a strong point of the defense with last season’s second leading tackler, senior Steven Barsky, back in the middle after recording 92 tackles, 9 TFL, one sack and an interception. Gargiulo is also back at linebacker after a stellar junior season which saw him register 73 tackles, 18 TFL, eight sacks, seven hurries and three FF. Junior Justin Fruscione will anchor the defensive line follow a 2015 campaign where he had 13 tackles, two sacks, two TFL and FF. CLASS A CENTRAL OUT: Manasquan IN: Red Bank RUMSON-FAIR HAVEN: *Please check out the Bulldogs preview article inside the paper for a full analysis of this year’s team. SAINT JOHN VIANNEY: The Lancers installed a new offensive system this season to better fit this year’s talent and it will look a lot different with either senior Matt Degennaro or Edison transfer junior Haaziq Daniels taking over for Brown at quarterback. They will look to establish a ground game first featuring senior running back and Villanova commit Chris Chukwuneke. An All-Division pick, Chukwuneke rushed for 574 yards with a whopping 9.9 yards/carry average and 10 touchdowns. He’ll benefit from a massive offensive line that returns four of five starter including Rutgers commits Micah Clarke and Jamal Beaty. If teams load the box on the Lancers, both quarterbacks are capable of going over the top with senior slotback Zyaire Sterling (9-175-TD receiving and 7-84-2 TDs rushing) and junior wide receiver Sam East being the top targets. Clarke, Beaty and junior defensive end Nick Densieski (15 tackles, 4 TFL, 2 sacks) will anchor the defensive line and should be dominant which will help a young group of linebackers to develop. In the secondary, Chukweneke at free safety (19 tackles, 2 TFL), Sterling and East provide experience, speed and athleticism. MATAWAN: Senior Jake Burlew will start and has experience after filling in for Pearson for the first three games of the season a year ago and did an admirable job going 23-of-37 for 226 yards and rushed for a pair of TDs in their Week 1 30-21 loss to Saint John Vianney. He’ll have the luxury of returning offensive line starters Mike McHugh (6-4, 255), All-Division Andrew Conzo (5-10, 215) and
Mike Karaycinski (5-11, 215) protecting the pocket as well as opening holes for senior running back Derrick Wiley (36-249-2 TDs) junior Devonte Spann (17-70). Junior fullback Ryan Rodriguez will help with blocking as well getting the rock in shortyardage and goal-line situations. Senior Joe Beukers (6-4, 185) saw limited time at wide receiver last season and looks to be Burlew’s main target with senior Ray Belony, Royce Tucker and Jacob Signorile vying for playing time at wideout. McHugh Conzo and Karaycinski will see double duty on the defensive line with junior Alex Calo getting the nod at defensive end in the four-man front after recording 17 tackles a year ago. Sophomore linebacker Devin Williams will ease the loss of Aliem Shaw and Isaiah Phillips after a sensational freshman season which saw him record 90 tackles, five sacks and an interception. RARITAN: Senior quarterback Marc Carnivale returns after a solid junior season when he went 107of-174 passing for 1,598 yards and 16 TDs and ran for another 135 yards. Senior Vito Aleo will be taking the majority of carries this fall for the Rockets after starting in the secondary last season. Four-year starter Matt Thompson (6-1, 235) will anchor the offensive line with seniors Alex Dalman (6-0, 215), Paul Bavaro (5-11, 245) and Sean Geaves (6-4, 270). Jordan Smith and Nick Pasquin must be replaced at wide receiver and they feel Sean Agar and Rory Sullivan can step up. Thompson, Dalman, Bavaro and Alex Garcia will man the defensive line while University of Connecticut commit Ryan Dickens (6-2,220), who recorded 127 tackles last season, is back ready for a huge senior season at middle linebacker with Brian Pasquin set for a breakout year on the outside. Aleo, a wrestler in the winter, can lay the wood from his safety spot and along with Sullivan, the secondary is in good hands. RED BANK: Last season, the Bucs won their first divisional title since 1977 in claiming the Class B North championship and posted their best season since 2003.They entered the CJGIII final undefeated before their magical season came to a crashing halt with a 21-0 loss to Rumson-Fair Haven in the final. Unfortunately for the Bucs, most of that team has graduated including first team All-Shore pick Shadiq Palmer (now playing at the University of Massachusetts), All-Division RB/CB Alim Godsey, first team All-Shore DE Sean Naiman, second team All-Shore WR/SS Matt Reardon, third team All-Shore pick QB Jack Navitsky and the list goes on. On the positive side, second team All-Shore linebacker Chris Outterbridge returns to lead the defense with seniors Jack Haytaian at defensive end; Tyrese Morris is back at linebacker plus senior safety Jalen Willis as well. Most spots are still to be determined but expect the Bucs to ride the historic momentum of last season into this year and lean on their defense for respectability. MONMOUTH: Dual-threat senior quarterback Casey Pachucki is back after a breakout junior campaign which saw him rush for 747 yards and 10 touchdowns and go 15-of-31 for 179 yards and two touchdowns after taking over at QB. He’s a stud linebacker as well, recording 56 tackles, nine TFL, six sacks and two FF. To say the Falcons will be leaning heavily on him is an understatement. Seniors Tyler Rebmann (67, 230) and Brandon Mejia (5-11, 210) will anchor both lines of scrimmage and seniors Jay Eustace (6-2, 180) and Elijah Walker (6-0, 185) will line up at wide receiver and in the secondary. HOLMDEL: The Hornets have five players on each side of the ball with some experience and will be relying heavily on junior Johnny O’Beirne at both running back and at linebacker to not only excel on the field as he did as a junior but provide leadership. Matt Brady (Sr. OL/DL 6-1, 200), Vincent Vitello (Sr. WR/DB 5-11, 175), David Noor (Sr. RB/ DB 5-9, 155), Seamus Wood (Sr. OL/DL 6-0, 210), Tristan Wong (Sr. RB/LB 5-10, 195) and Scott Dupont (Jr. WR/DB 5-11, 160) all return with some degree of on-field experience. BRICK TOWNSHIP: Brick returns five starters on both sides of the ball including Temple University commit Ja’Sir Taylor. Taylor (6-1, 185) is an allaround back with game-breaking abilities who can hurt you from anywhere on the field. Taylor accounted for 1,105 all-purpose yards as a junior and scored 15 touchdowns. He caught 15 passes for 411 yards (27.4 yards/catch) and five scores, had a team-high seven rushing touchdowns either out of the backfield or on a jet sweep and scored on a 47-yard punt return as well as being a lockdown cornerback on defense. Senior John Prato will get the start at wideout and is a nice compliment to Taylor. Senior Anthony Constanza took over at quarterback late last season and should be the starter this season. Seniors Jay Obenauer (345 yards, 3 TDs) and Rahson McCall (393 yards, 4 TDs) will be in the backfield and should both take their play to another level this season. Senior Liam Poland (5-11, 255), who recorded 15 pancake blocks a year ago, and senior Jack Finelli (6-1,270) will anchor the offensive line. Finelli (58 tackles, 23 TFL, 5 sacks) will also set the tone on a rebuilding defensive line and senior Dan Helstowski (5-10, 185) is back at linebacker after a breakout junior campaign which saw him record 78 tackles (19 for loss) and seven sacks. CENTRAL: Second team All-Shore RB/MLB Mike Bickford is back after a monster junior season on both sides of the ball. The 6-0, 190-pound dynamo rushed for 1,582 yards and 21 touchdowns with 8.4 yards/carry average and has a chance to become Central Regional’s all-time leading rusher this season. All-Division fullback/defensive end Dennis Corbin (6-2, 235) is back at fullback to help Bickford get the record with crunching blocks at the point of attack as well getting the rock in shortyardage and goal-line situations. He’s another impact player on both sides of the ball for the Golden Eagles. Junior Eli Allen (6-1, 190) will get the first shot at replacing quarterback Mike Miserendino, but sophomore Jay Fowler has looked good and is in the mix as well. Juniors Brandon Voss (6-1, 280) and Blake Horgan (6-3, 240) plus seniors Jon Matuska (6-1, 210), Waylon Speers (6-2, 215) and Alex Maj (5-11, 215) are all in the mix on both sides of the ball on the line with Corbin starting at one DE spot. Seniors Anthony Holloway (5-9, 160) and Brandon Mickins (5-11, 160) plus junior Neil Harrington (5-10, 170) will be counted on both as wide receivers and in the secondary. Allen and junior Lino Delgiudice man the linebacker spot with a number of underclassmen vying for playing time. BRICK MEMORIAL: * Please see the Brick Memorial preview article inside the paper for a full analysis of this year’s team. SOUTHERN: Junior Joe Miele, senior Dane Walker and host of underclassmen are in the running back mix with junior Robby Gagliardi and senior Matt Bleicher (5-11, 170) joining Donahower at wideout. Senior Joe Poling anchors the offensive line while Dylan Lane is back at defensive end (13 tackles, 2 TFL, sack). The linebacking corp is in good hands with Joe Miele (5-10,210) back in the middle after recording 29 tackles, six TFL and a sack last season and his brother Vin (26 tackles, 4TFL) on the outside. Senior Jesse Amir (27 tackles, 3TFL) is also back at linebacker which forms a very solid group. Amir (62, 225) will line up at tight end as well. Bleicher heads up the secondary where he recorded two interceptions from his free safety spot a year ago with Chris Citarella getting the nod at strong safety. TOMS RIVER SOUTH: Three seniors are fighting for the starting QB job with Dominic O’Brien, T.J. Rockhill and Drew Laing comp e t i n g. O’Brien was the backup last season while Rockhill and Laing are converted slot backs. Copper Guzzi and David Hibbert are battling for the starting running back position along with a few other underclassmen. Seniors Mike Faone and Jake Iadevaia (6-0, 250) will anchor the defensive line at the end positions while linebackers Todd Stueber in the middle and Nick Page on the outside will be counted on heavily after two-year starter and captain Jaden Kosh graduated. Senior Jeremy Lonergan will step in on outside as well pro-

viding the Indians with a trio of solid linebackers. Guzzi and Rockhill have the most experience in the secondary that will include Laing, Hibbert and O’Brien as well. Stuber and Paige will also be seeing double-duty on the offensive line. TOMS RIVER EAST: It’s a new era at TRE with new head coach Kyle Sandberg taking over the struggling program. The Raiders must first overcome the loss of four All-Division players including OL Brandon Burge, LB Avery DelValle, DB Pat Saunders and RB/S Nick Grande; a tall order for a firstyear coach. The Raiders will be counting on these returning players and key newcomers: Sr. Jake Gilligan FB/ LB, Jr. Tommy Ferrante FB/ LB, Sr. Landon Zagacki TE/DE, Sr. Nick Fairfield OL/DL, Sr. Nick Hough RB/DB, Sr. Chris Ortiz QB/DB, Sr. Dylan Rainieri RB/LB, Jr. Nick Silvia WR/ DB, Sr. Kyle Blue WR/DB, Jr. Sean Tursi WR/DB, Sr. Roberto Artiles RB/DB, and Sr. Jake Campbell TE/LB. CLASS B NORTH IN: Middletown South, Middletown North and Manasquan OUT: Colts Neck, Neptune and Red Bank MIDDLETOWN SOUTH: *Please check out the Eagles preview article inside the paper for a full analysis of this year’s team. MIDDLETOWN NORTH: In Steve Bush’ first year as head coach at Middletown North four years ago he took a gamble starting a freshman at quarterback. Now a senior, Donald Glenn has made Bush look like a genius. Bush and Glenn have successfully teamed up to turn the struggling program around after years of dismal football. In Glenn’s three years at quarterback the Lions have gone 10-8 in the brutal Class A North and last season went 7-4 overall – their most victories since 2000 - and 4-2 in the division. Their two divisional losses both came against Middletown South, with the second loss coming in the North 2, Group 4 semifinals. By the way, Middletown South went undefeated and ended the season ranked No.1 in New Jersey. Unfortunately, the Lions will still have to deal with the Eagles – ranked No.1 in the states preseason polls - both in the division and playoffs again this season. The Wagner-bound Glenn – a third team All-Shore selection – threw for 1,982 yards and 17 touchdowns in leading the Lions to their third straight playoff appearance a year ago and for his career has thrown for 4,865 yards and 48 touchdowns. In all, the Lions bring back 11 starters (six on offense, seven on defense) including Glenn’s favorite target senior Brendan Kube – a first team All-Shore pick. Kube had 63 catches a year ago for 1,066 yards and seven touchdowns. Senior Dwight Wilkerson – another four-year starter – had 27 receptions for 285 yards and four touchdowns and junior running back Connor Welch grabbed nine balls for 147 yards and three touchdowns out of the backfield. Welch stepped in for standout running back Chad Freshnock – now at Bucknell – for much of last season after an injury plagued season for Freshnock and rushed for 746 yards and seven touchdowns. Wilkerson also picked 194 yards on the ground on 25 carries primarily on jet sweeps. Senior Marc Cerbo will see action at wide receiver this season while continuing his stellar play in the secondary and lanky junior Paul Dunleavy (6-2, 180) hopes to break into the wideout rotation. OCEAN TOWNSHIP: *Please check out the Spartans preview article inside the paper for a full analysis of this year’s team. RED BANK CATHOLIC: The Caseys’ roster has undergone a significant turnover from a year ago and this season just may be a rebuilding year for the Caseys and new head coach Frank Edgery – back for his second stint as Casey head coach after seven years as an assistant coach in the NFL. However, rebuilding at Red Bank Catholic is like fishing from a lake that has just been stocked with trout. Last year’s quarterback, Eddie Hahn, is now at the University of Connecticut and his replacement is yet to be determined with juniors Tommy Lang and Kyle Moore, along with sophomore Steve Lubischer competing for the starting job. Juniors Zack Bair (28 carries for 110 yards, one TD) - the top returning running back on the roster – and Nick Brusca will carry most the workload in the backfield. Senior Alex Sargiss (6-3, 280)
and juniors Michael Griggs (6-4, 274) and Rich Christie (6-3, 250) will anchor the offensive line. The most productive offensive weapon returning for the Caseys is Max Hazzard, a senior wide receiver who caught 16 passes for 262 yards and two touchdowns last season.
nior Jake Clement looks to have a bigger role after gaining 135 yards on the ground on just 13 carries for 10 yard/carry average. The offensive line is headed by seniors Cade Watkins (6-2,235), Jon Ricardi and Matt Zuhowski along with junior Cody Liquori (6-3, 200).
LONG BRANCH: The Green Wave won 24 games from 2012-2014 with three consecutive trips to the state playoffs including trips to the CJGIII semifinals in 2012 and 2014 before taking a step back last season falling to 3-7 and only 1-5 within the division. Unfortunately for Long Branch it’s not going to get any easier with Middletown South, Middletown North and Manasquan now competing in Class A North.
SHORE REGIONAL: The Blue Devils won their second consecutive CJGI title last season but face huge uphill battle replacing four running backs that combined accounted for a whopping 2,940 yards and 34 touchdowns. They do return starting quarterback Matt Pennell, who ran for 175 yards on 30 carries with five touchdowns and went 25-of-44 for 461 yards and seven touchdowns through the air. But unfortunately, their top four pass receivers are gone as well. Also graduated are first and second team All-Shore offensive linemen Erik Graham and Steve Fiumefreddo, respectively and All-Division lineman Casey Rogers. It doesn’t get much better defensively, where first team All-Shore linebacker Doug Goldsmith recorded 140 tackles and four sacks. Junior defensive end Mike Rosati returns after leading the team with six sacks and he’ll have to take charge of a defense that needs to carry the team this season.
First of all, the Wave will need to replace second team All-Shore offensive/defensive lineman Joe Jasio and third team All-Linebacker Brandon Lane which will be no easy task. Junior Juwan Wilkins gets the start at quarterback after splitting time there last season and will head up the secondary after leading the team with six interceptions a year ago. Running back Keith Cooper returns after leading the team in rushing last season with 961 yards and eight touchdowns while performing as a shutdown cornerback as well. Wilkins’ two main targets are back in tight end Kaymarr Mines and T.J. Fosque at wide receiver. Mines (6-5, 220) is also a force to be reckoned with at his defensive end spot and Fosque will be back in the secondary. Frankie Ganzalez (5-9, 295) will anchor the interior of both the offensive and defensive lines. WALL: The Knights were plagued with injuries a year ago and finished a disappointing 4-6 and 2-4 in the division. Starting quarterback Matt Cluley was hurt in the first game of the season and lost for the year. The positive side of that is that junior starting quarterback Eddie Scott has a year of experience under his belt after stepping in for Cluley last season. Senior Sean Larkin is back at running back and safety after being selected All-Division last season and will be a leader on both sides of the ball. MANASQUAN: With seven returning starters on defense the Warriors feel confident can help them get over the hump and lead them back into the win column after two uncharacteristic 3-7 seasons in a row. Senior Adam Schreck (6-5, 220) is a force as an edge rusher at defensive end and with Sr. Dylan Pacetii (6-2,230), S r . Nick Pierro (6-3, 285), Sr. Ben Barry (6-3, 260), Sr. Joe LaRosa (6-3, 250) and Jr. Evan Hilla (510, 200) all in the D-line rotation, the Warriors present a very formidable front line. Seniors Tom Meyer (5-11, 190) and Jack Mallet (6-0, 190) along with junior Connor Morgan (5-9, 190) will be backing the defensive line up at linebacker. Seniors Kyle LeBlanc (6-3, 185) and Damaso Jaime (5-10, 174), along with junior Tom Antonucci (5-8, 170) will head up the secondary. Most the defensive linemen will do double duty on the offensive line with Schreck at tight end. Manasquan must replace Liam Graves at quarterback with Senior Jerry Maher, sophomores James Pendergast and Ryan O’Leary and Antonucci competing for the starting spot. Antonucci is also a valuable asset at wide receiver with the lanky LeBlanc, 6-2 James Mele and Damaso Jamie all reliable targets for whoever wins the quarterback job. CLASS B CENTRAL MATER DEI: *Please check out the Seraphs preview article inside the paper for a full analysis of this year’s team. POINT PLEASANT BEACH: The Garnet Gulls look to improve on their 5-5 record from a year ago and take a step further in the state playoffs after losing in the CJGI first round last season. Junior Luke Frauenheim returns as starting quarterback after sharing the spot a year ago with junior John Nista, who moves over to tight end in the Gulls Wing-T Offense. Senior Connor Kells (6-1, 195) is a returning starter at wide receive r where he led the team with 19 catches for 493 yards and seven touchdowns and junior Josh Yates will be a target of Frauenheim as well. The Gulls return almost their entire backfield with Frauenheim, who led the team in rushing with 766 yards on 135 carries, leading the way. Junior fullback Chris Weber (60,200) returns from an injury but still picked up 476 yards on the ground on 66 carries – second on the team – and three touchdowns last season, while se-
KEYPORT: Quarterback Chris Hogrefe returns and will be an important cog in the secondary as well. Junior Jay Hansen (6-2, 220) is back at fullback and linebacker along with seniors Rayquan Brown (WR/DB) and Cody Young (WR/RB/ DB). Sophomore Shykim Tr e a d w e l l will have a bigger role at both running back and linebacker along with Christian Smith (WR/DB) and Zachary Frick (TE/DL). ASBURY PARK: All-Division selections cornerback/ slotback Donte Abrams and offensive/defensive lineman Calvin SimmonsCarter (42 tackles, four sacks) return as well as outside linebacker/ w i d e r e ceiver Namir Argilagos, who recorded 57 tackles, two FR, four sacks and 2 FF. Cishiume Simmons (6-3,210) returns at defensive end/linebacker after recording 54 tackles a year ago and Dyquan Young will be at outside linebacker and wideout. Junior Nasir Jones (62, 185) will be back at defensive end and senior Paul Reed is a versatile player with experience at running back/wide receiver/defensive back. KEANSBURG: The Titans are coming off three consecutive 1-9 seasons but feel they return enough talent to break the cycle and turn the page. TOP RETURNERS: Richie Squeo (Sr. OL/ DL), Dylan Ryan (Sr. OL/DL), Jared Bell (Sr. OL/DL), Paul Liseno (So. OL/DL), Daniel Vital (Jr. QB/FS), Miguel Crespo (Jr. WR/LB), Steven McCoy (Sr. WR/FS), Nick Rizzi (Sr. DL), Justin Alessi (Jr. DB/RB) Joe Oserbye (Jr. LB/RB). CLASS B SOUTH IN: Lacey OUT: Central LAKEWOOD: Junior Zyheir Jones is back at quarterback and his twin brother Jyheir returns at wide receiver so look for the Piners to throw the ball more this season out of their Shotgun Wing-T formation. Jyheir has the speed to stretch the defense and with 6-3, 225-pound Adi Palmer (17-295-2 TDs) also back at wideout, that’s one more reason to go through the air. Senior Honore Richardson, who backed up Tyler at wingback, will assume some of the load in the backfield. Upfront there’s plenty of beef with junior J.P. Rodriguez (6-5,275) anchoring the offensive line with senior Isiah Francis (6-0, 200) and newcomers Tye Pierce (5-9, 250), Javier Rangel (5-10, 245). All-Division defensive end Josh Lezin should be a force on the line this season and impossible to handle. The 6-1, 260-pound junior piled 61 tackles with 11 sacks a year ago coming off the weakside and is a knock-down fullback as well. LACEY: *Please check out the Lions preview article inside the paper for a full analysis of this year’s team. JACKSON LIBERTY: All-Division inside linebacker Steve Schuster returns to lead the defense after recording 89 tackles last season and senior defensive end Javier Duran (6-3, 250) is also back and will be a force to reckon with coming off the edge. On offense, the Lions will need to find a replacement for All-Division quarterback Ryan VanWinkle and will count on senior Brendan McKelvey (42178-2 TDs) in the backfield as well as all-purpose speedster Ryan Downer, who averaged 11.5 yards/carry and had 17 receptions for 153 yards and one touchdown. Duran, Jake Stilwell (5-10, 225), and Nick Johnson (6-2, 200) will anchor both lines up front. Seniors Jake Stevens and Derek Carlton head up the linebacker and Schuster, Downer and McKelvey lead the secondary. POINT PLEASANT BORO: The Panthers shared a piece of the Class B South title and were seeded third in the CJGII playoffs before bowing out in the first round. However, only seven starters return from that team and they must replace All-Division quarterback Noah Husak, leaving first-year head coach Matt Cilento and the Panthers facing a rebuilding year. BARNEGAT: The Bengals won only two games last season and graduated their top two running backs and wide receivers who were also the leaders of the defensive unit as well. TOP RETURNERS: Connor Lustenberger (Sr. QB/DB/K), Joe Monaco (Sr. QB/DB), Jake Schmitz (Sr. RB/DB), Jacques Picault (Sr. WR/DB) PINELANDS: The Wildcats look to be vastly improved this season and look to have their first .500 or better record since 2010. Pinelands returns starting quarterback senior Nick Rex to run the offense and three of their top four running backs from a year ago including junior Brennan Richardson, who rushed for 912 yards on a 120 carries for a 7.6 yards/carry average and five touchdowns. The All-Division running back will be joined in the backfield by junior Justin Kirkpatrick (32-312-3 TDs, 9.8 yards/carry) and senior David Fairl (59-311-TD) forming a legitimate threeheaded monster. MANCHESTER: The Hawks should take a step towards respectability this season returning eight starters on offense and nine on defense. TOP RETURNERS: Jalen Glenn (Jr. RB), Alex Lunn (Sr. RB/ WR), Jake Lloyd (Sr. OL/DL 6-0,260), Dylan Cervenak (Sr. OL/LB 6-0, 190), Chris Blaine (Sr. LB/TE 6-3, 212), Bobby Hart (Sr. WR/DB 6-0, 185), Dan Morales (Jr. OL/DL), Tariq Ali (Sr. RB/WR/DB), Jsan Santos (Sr. DL/RB 5-10,185). DONOVAN CATHOLIC: The Griffins improved to 4-6 last season after coming off a 0-10 season but have their work cut out for them for them to take the next step. Many of their top players from a year ago are gone including All-Division performers Donald Rappochio (DL/OL), David Calderon (RB/DB) and Alex Rosario (all-purpose).

WITH HISTORIC SEASON BEHIND THEM, MIDDLETOWN SOUTH KNOWS REPEAT WON’T COME EASY By Mike Ready
MIDDLETOWN – Entering last season it had been eight long years (2006) since Middletown South had won their last state sectional title; an eternity for a storied program such as Middletown South.
The linebacking corps boasts two All-Shore picks in second team All-Shore inside linebacker senior Kevin Higgins (6-1, 223) who registered 58 tackles, eight TFL and two sacks as a member of the best linebacking unit in the state. Third team All-Shore selection Jake Krellin moves to linebacker this season after staring on the defensive line a year ago when he recorded 69 tackles, 22 TFL and six sacks.
Nonetheless, the Eagles, who had won nine sectional championships in 20 final appearances going into last season, not only broke their title drought but did it in spectacular fashion. Facing perennial New Jersey power Phillipsburg in the state final, they annihilated the Liners, 35-7, to win the North 2, Group IV championship. They went undefeated (12-0) and were voted the No.1 team in the state in the NJ.com final top 20 rankings.
“Obviousley James (McCarthy) is out and that’s a key loss for us,” Higgins said. We just have to step it up. Jake’s looking fast, strong at linebacker and he’s a real smart player. I trust him on my backside and he trusts me.”
“We’re still hungry to win another championship, that’s the bottom line here,” Head Coach Steve Antonucci said. “We talked about it all offseason and these kids have done a tremendous job preparing for this season. We’re a good football team that’s going to have an opportunity to hopefully get back to that game. We don’t have a lot of depth; we have to stay healthy, play well and do all the little things.” Coming into this season, the Eagles knew they had their work cut out for them having to replace first team All-State linebacker Dylan Rogers and second team All-State running back Cole Rogers, but what they didn’t know was that they were going to be dealt a crushing blow when first team All-State LB/RB James McCarthy would tear his ACL at a football camp at Syracuse University just prior to preseason camp and is out for the year. “Losing James was huge loss for us and we’re working through it,” Antonucci said. “But you’re never going to be able to replace a guy like that. We’re still trying to find the right mix of guys to give us what we’re looking for. Our defense was kind of built around him, so we’ve had to change our philosophies a little bit and tweak some things.” Still, even without McCarthy, the Eagles bring back more than enough talent to compete for another state title and come into the season ranked No.1 in the NJ.com preseason top 20. Holmdel transfer, senior quarterback Aneesh Agrawal (6-1, 175), and last season’s backup quarterback, senior Brendan Donlon, are battling for the starting spot and both have played well in preseason scrimmages. Agrawal put up some pretty solid numbers on a struggling Holmdel team a year ago while averaging 145 yards passing per game and he won the Shore Sports Zone week seven top performer of the week award when he threw for two TDs and rushed for another. The way things have shaken out so far this preseason the battle for the starting position most likely will go down to the wire. “Everyone’s been very welcoming,” Agrawal said. “I’ve gotten a lot of support around me which has been nice and Coach Antonucci had been great to me;
Sophomore Matt Tardy and Porter look to have nailed down the other two linebacker spots with both having game experience. Tardy could line up at tight end as well.
so it’s been a smooth transition. Everyone’s on the same mindset here, all are tremendous athletes and all have the same goal. Everyone knows what’s going on so everything just moves smooth.”
The defensive backfield has the potential to be one of the best in the Shore Conference. Imsho is back at strong safety where he led the Shore Conference with seven interceptions. Being a ballhawk is only one aspect of his game as he’s a savage tackler and had 46 tackles a year ago along with two defensive touchdowns.
It will be running back by committee with seniors Samson Dube (5-11, 190) and Maxx Imsho (5-11,190) getting the bulk of the carries with junior Chaz Alessi (5-10, 190) also in the mix after rushing for 140 yards on 22 carries a year ago.
Dube (one INT) gets the start at free safety after a strong 2015 season while Joyce, and seniors Ryan Ruzieki and Connor O’Gurk get the bulk of work at the cornerback spots.
Depending on the formation, Dube and Imsho will line up at wide receiver as well, with returner Jeff Lewandowdki getting a starting nod after hauling in three TDs last season averaging 20.2 yards per reception. Seniors Jeremy Joyce and Ian Porter will see time at wideout as well. The offensive line returns three starters that game-in-and-game-out display brute strength both creating space in the running lanes and protecting the pocket. Third team All-Shore selection senior Bobby Burke (6-2, 260) returns at left guard while junior Adam Markman (6-1, 235) is back at center and will call the line signals. Massive senior tackle Mike Wilson (6-4,285) is a two-year starter and senior Mike Walsh (6-1, 245) gets the start opposite Wilson at the other tackle spot. Senior Will Gullick (6-1, 240) will start at right guard playing on both sides of the ball this season.

Middletown South moves to the very competitive Class B North this season and is facing a brutal schedule. Cross-town rival Middletown North – who the Eagles beat in the state semifinals last season and will battle for the title this season – and a vastly improved Manasquan team also made the shift. Then there’s Red Bank Catholic, Ocean Township, Long Branch and Wall to contend with, in addition to a ridiculous non-division schedule of Toms River North, Rumson-Fair Haven (both state champs) and Saint John Vianney – who lost in the Non-Public Group III final.
The Eagles return four All-Shore selections on defense. Gulick – a second team All-Shore pick – is back to anchor the defensive line after recording 46 tackles, 18 TFL and four sacks. He’ll be joined by Markmann and Burke on the line.
“I love the move, I love the challenge,” Antonucci said. “I’m looking forward to the RBC, Ocean, Long Branch, playing at Manasquan; all those games. And our non-conference schedule is as good as anybody’s, so I’m excited about it. It will challenge our kids, it will challenge us and it’s a great opportunity for us.”
“Those are some pretty big boys,” Higgins said. “Will’s doing a great job holding it down.”
The Eagles will open their title defense on Friday, September 9 at Red Bank Catholic with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
SPECIAL THANKS Chris Melvin
“The defensive backs are unbelievable with Maxx and Samson having great experience,” Higgins said. “And right now all our cornerbacks are all looking real good.”
