Welcome to the 2015 edition of Explore with The National Trust for Jersey. PHOTOGRAPHY
Thank you David Ogilvie, John Lord, Julian Hart, Matt Porteous, Trevor Biddle and Traces of War Jersey.
It tells you what we have to offer both visitors and Islanders. Whether your interest is our lovely lanes and woodlands, cliff walks or built heritage there will be something here for you. If you have young children or grandchildren can we recommend our Tots’ Tales, Bug Safaris or Rock Pool Rambles. We want you to come along as well; adults enjoy themselves as much as the children! For more fun family activities please see our ‘Top Ten Things To Do for Kids’ on page 22. If you are looking for somewhere to visit we have five properties that are open to the public whilst our lands are freely accessible for everyone to enjoy. My personal favourite is the new Wetlands Centre overlooking St Ouen’s Pond, our bird watching and interpretation centre. When in town, why not go to the Georgian House at 16 New Street where our resident cook will have some period delicacies for you to taste by the open fire. Or why not attend one of our special events including Music by Candlelight, a lecture on Fabergé eggs and by no means least, Father
Christmas who will be in attendance in December, to help everyone to revel in the magical festive atmosphere. Undoubtedly the events which attract the highest numbers are our wonderful Sunset Concerts, held in June and generously sponsored by Ashburton. This June you can dust off your cowboy boots and ten gallon hat, ‘cause this year we goin’ Country’, yeehaw! It is open to y’all, friends and family welcome, and don’t forget your picnic, Western themed of course! We have some wonderful new walks and workshops for 2015, from Pruning & Grafting Apple Trees, to our weekend art workshops with a wonderful London based artist! Finally we would like to draw your attention to the brand new ‘Channel Islands Heritage Festival’, where the National Trust will be putting on special events such as pop-up art exhibitions and a vintage coach tour with our very knowledgeable guide Bob Le Sueur. Our role is to help you enjoy our gloriously beautiful Island. If you like what we do then please consider joining The National Trust for Jersey. We need your support! All good wishes. Grève de Lecq BARRACKS & SHOP
Grève de Lecq Barracks are the only surviving barracks left on the north coast of the Island, and are an excellent example of a self-contained military unit retaining many original features, including two prison cells and the ablutions block. Constructed in 1810 against the threat of Napoleonic invasion, visitors can learn about the living conditions of the soldiers and officers, defences of the Island and the beginning of tourism in Jersey. The Barracks are located in Grève de Lecq Bay, St Mary. The parade ground serves as the on-site car park and the majority of the site has disabled access provided by wheelchair ramps. Feel free to wander around and discover the site wherever a door is open! 4

To walk through the front door of 16 New Street is to step back in time and experience life in Regency Jersey. With evocative sights, sounds and smells you will be transported to a time of elegance where gentlemen smoked clay pipes, ladies drank priceless tea and the threat of French invasion was always a hot topic of conversation. Let your imagination wander as you ascend to the top of the house where you may be surprised to discover a spirit of the past where you would least expect it. The resident cook is always keen to impart her recipes and tempt you with a taste!

Dating back to the 15th century, the house and farm buildings are brought to life with characters from the Island’s past. The Hamptonne farm complex comprises of three houses, a colombier, several outbuildings and an orchard. Each of the three houses dates from a different century, reflecting the changing architectural styles of Jersey over time. During the summer, visitors can meet the Hamptonne pigs (arriving in June) in the traditional pigsty with outdoor yard and mud bath and see Jersey cows graze in the fields at Hamptonne. Special events will take place throughout the year for all the family to enjoy, including the annual Faîs’sie d’Cidre. ST OUEN’S BAY
ACTIVITIES & EVENTS FOR EVERYONE ALL YEAR ROUND!
THE NATIONAL TRUST FOR JERSEY
Wetland Centre The Trust invites you to its exciting new bird hide and wetland interpretation centre located in the heart of St Ouen’s Bay. Perfectly situated overlooking St Ouen’s Pond, the Wetland Centre gives you and your family an opportunity to not only view the interesting and diverse birdlife found at La Mare au Seigneur, but to also learn about the reserve’s wildlife and rich history, safeguarded by the National Trust for Jersey since 1975. The new centre is accessed by a tunnel, which takes visitors through a dune mound and opens out to give panoramic views of the reed bed and pond. This offers a unique perspective for budding birdwatchers without disturbing the waders, waterfowl and magnificent Marsh Harriers from doing what they do.
THE WETLAND CENTRE ALSO PROVIDES: • A visitor controlled pan, tilt, zoom mounted
camera to allow an interactive and entirely new perspective to the pond's feathered visitors and residents. • Reed bed cam to give visitors a previously
unseen insight into the reed’s secretive occupants such as Marsh Harrier’s nests and the enchanting Bearded Tit. • Modern and interactive interpretation panels
to educate and inform visitors, which include beautiful bird identification panels painted by local artist Anna Le Moine Gray. • A converted German personnel bunker to be
used for an educational space and facility. • A green roof that provides habitat for plants,
small mammals, amphibians and reptiles like the Green Lizard.

The Officers’ Quarters offer a unique opportunity to experience living in a 19th century barracks situated on Jersey’s beautiful north coast. Located at Grève de Lecq, the accommodation has a sea view and is within two minutes walking distance of a golden sandy beach, stunning north coastal walks, and a number of local pubs and excellent beach cafés. Handsomely refurbished by The National Trust for Jersey in 2000, this high quality, centrally heated accommodation has been carefully created within the Officers’ Quarters, whilst still retaining the historic fabric, including features such as the original fireplaces. There is spacious and modern accommodation for up to six people. During the summer season, the rest of the Barracks is open to the public, with special events being held on a very occasional basis during the evening.
History greets you at every turn in this 18th century guardhouse, situated high on the eastern cliffs that dominate Grève de Lecq Bay. Although it was initially built to protect the Island from invasion, it has now become the perfect spot for a peaceful and tranquil break. Surrounded by stunning views and a refreshing sea breeze, this site is an ideal base for beach activities, exploring Grève de Lecq Bay, or just relaxing around a BBQ with friends and family.
Known colloquially as the ‘White House’ due to its distinctive whitewashed exterior, this 18th century building was used as a powder magazine up until the end of the Napoleonic wars. After the wars, with no further need to defend the Island, the property was converted into a simple cottage. Today its basic facilities perfectly lend itself to use as a stone tent in one of the most beautiful coastal locations on the Island. An ideal venue to get away from it all. Despite the simplicity of this accommodation, the location of the building, as well as its attractive and quirky facade, makes it a superb and exciting place to stay for a few days.
With a grassy front lawn, stunning views and a beautiful heritage building to enjoy, Le Câtel Fort is a picture perfect location to enjoy a short break with friends and family.
Weekly hire fees range from £800 up to £1,300 during peak season. Children are very welcome, but unfortunately no pets are allowed. For further details please call Macole’s 488121 or Freedom Holidays 725259.
