A Reimagined Beachfront Escape

ONE OF MY FAVORITE PARTS about my role at The Boca Raton is the opportunity—oftentimes impromptu—to speak with Club members and resort guests about their experiences at our iconic property. I relish these talks. It is an opportunity to learn what piques their interests, as well as gain insights on why they choose to spend their adventures with us and how we can continue enlivening their experiences at The Boca Raton.

In the coming months, I look forward to seeing how members and guests will react to our latest reveals, which include the reopening of Beach Club. It’s one of our greatest endeavors yet, a $120 million reimagination of a hotel and oceanfront destination that has long been a strong part of our property’s identity. Taking cues from the majesty of the French Riviera, the transformed Beach Club will represent a new way to celebrate a joie de vivre, complete with 210 redesigned guest rooms and suites that connect the indoors with the outdoors, plus exciting programming that includes morning rituals, VesBars and the brand-new dining venue Onda. Our beloved Marisol restaurant will be completely refreshed in a new indoor-outdoor space, with an exciting new twist. You can read more about the new Beach Club on page 30.

Another addition to our upcoming season is Artisans of Wine & Food, a multiday experience celebrating bold flavors, incredible wines, and unforgettable moments. It’s a first-of-its-kind event for The Boca Raton, presented in partnership with the esteemed Napa Valley Vintners, bringing together more than 75 winemakers, celebrated chefs (including our very own), and immersive programming for a celebration of fine wine and food that promises to become a coveted annual tradition. The premiere event takes place on our property from Jan. 17-19, 2025.

Speaking of great food, in this issue we delve into the finer and—dare we say—unexpected delights that make the cuisine and beverages across our 15 culinary outlets one of the best, most varied in the nation. The feature story “Dining at The Boca Raton, from A to Z” spotlights 26 dishes, drinks and experiences, along with the nuances that make them special. Even for the most seasoned of diners at The Boca Raton, some tidbits might even surprise you.

We’re also excited to present updates on our Racquet Club, which now includes 12 pickleball courts and the brand-new Racquet Bar. Set to be a new hub for our Racquet Club players to convene at and bring friends, Racquet Bar is sure to be a smash. Read more on page 40.

Thank you for taking the time to be with us, either as a guest or member. We could not be more grateful that you choose to spend your days, evenings and special occasions with us.

Escape to Beach Club

The Florida Riviera is on the horizon as the new Beach Club debuts this season. The remarkable reimagination represents the culmination of a years-long drive into innovative design that brings a vibrant, sophisticated atmosphere into the forefront—all with The Boca Raton member a nd hotel guest in mind.

The $120 million reimagination of the Forbes Five-Star Beach Club will seamlessly connect to its golden beach backdrop through a stunning redesign and c urated experiences. With three glistening pools, a half-mile stretch of beach, dozens of water sports activities, and a bounty of programming, there will be no shortage

of activities that give not just a sense of place, but a sense of untapped joie de vivre. Here, vibrancy will live in the many conversations that will be amplified by the serenity of the warm air and sun.

“Members and hotel guests will have new robust options to enjoy the day,” says Daniel Hostettler, president and CEO of The Boca Raton. “Every visit to Beach Club could be an entirely different experience from the previous one, allowing us to redefine how paradise can be relished.”

The fully renovated Beach Club will include transformed guest rooms that showcase natural textures and open, light-filled spaces, including several new suites that flow into expansive poolside outdoor living spaces. Discover a new fitness facility, refreshed meeting spaces, and a redesigned member a rrival experience. Serving as an idyllic private beachfront setting, the brandnew Surfside event lawn is the perfect space to host a wedding or other special occasion, either within an open-air or tented environment.

Beachside dining includes Marisol, the popular Mediterranean-inspired restaurant, in its new indoor-outdoor locale w ith an extended poolside terrace, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner just steps from the ocean. Inspired by iconic coastal destinations, Onda is a new sand-side restaurant where diners will be captivated by global culinary talents and sweeping ocean views. In addition, Living Room lounge will showcase elegant aperitifs and great social vibes in the evening. And in the daytime, Living Room’s café will serve house-made pastries and coffee in a light-filled space where you can start your day or simply recharge throughout it. When it’s time for a lazy afternoon, relax on new chaise loungers at the three upgraded pools. At the beach, curated new experiences and reinvented programming will debut, representing beachside r ituals that are authentic, fresh, and meaningful. Exclusive poolside cabanas are in partnership with St. Tropez swimwear brand Vilebrequin. After all, life’s a b each, and we couldn’t imagine a better way to enjoy it than at Beach Club.

On With the Show

Be wowed by the new Valencia Theater, a reconceived gathering spot within Cloister presenting memorable arts and culture moments. The elegant space features c urated programming, including films, comedy shows, lectures, and live music performances, in the historic space that once held The Boca Raton’s indoor pool.

Shop Time

A new way to shop debuts at The Boca Raton. Cloister’s latest retail experience will be a specially curated corner helmed by the fashion and lifestyle magazine Palmer, featuring a rotation of luxury brands throughout the year. The ever-changing sartorial groupings bring style and intrigue as Palmer reveals its selections in grand fashion.

Rain on Me

Keeping 18 holes of golf—plus driving and putting ranges—adequately watered in Florida’s sunshine is no easy task to complete, especially in a sustainable manner. But at The Boca Raton, eco-friendly solutions are at the forefront. The golf maintenance team, led by course superintendent Eric Harchuska, manages a system where rainwater is collected in t he ponds and used to irrigate the golf course. That, along with the City of Boca Raton’s reclaimed water, is used to maintain a beautiful c ourse in the most sustainable way possible.

Family First

There’s something for everyone at The Boca Raton, including our youngest guests and members. Refreshed programming with robust activities will debut at the kids club, Banyan Bunch, for youths ages 4 to 10, and at The Break, the hideaway for those ages 9 to 15. And for the especially adventurous, there’s FlowRider, a surf wave simulator at Harborside Pool Club. Everyone can get in on the action with fun competitions like Best Wipeout and more.

Helping Hands

Volunteerism is at the center of The Boca Raton’s commitment to local communities, and one of the nonprofit organizations dearest to the property’s heart is Boca Helping Hands. The resort team regularly works with the nonprofit, which provides food, job training, access to health care and financial assistance, and packages and distributes healthy boxed meals directly to residents in need. The result? Each associate at The Boca Raton is able to volunteer their time, in which 1,500 meals are packaged in an hour. Those numbers will increase during the course of our partnership.

Such Great Heights

Pieces of world history come alive at The Boca Raton. Four “big-eye” binoculars have been lovingly restored, reproduced, or replicated by Luxxoptica, a Palm Beachbased antique retailer, to give a glimpse into yesteryear—such as the binoculars from the USS Nassau, commissioned in 1979, that Luxxoptica restored and are now found in Top of the Tower. And Yacht Club’s two binoculars, one a reproduction of pairs used by the Japanese Imperial Navy and the other a restored German flak big-eye binocular. See the binoculars for yourself at The Boca Raton.

Toasting to New Memories

The Boca Raton continues to make its global mark this season with the inaugural Artisans of Wine & Food, an extraordinary weekend event that welcomes bold f lavors and unforgettable moments from the vineyards of Napa Valley to South Florida’s Atlantic coast. The best part? It all takes place here, within our 200-acre coastal paradise.

The first-of-its-kind event unfolds Jan. 17 to 19, 2025 and is a much-anticipated partnership with the esteemed Napa

Valley Vintners. The weekend will bring together more than 75 winemakers and celebrated chefs, as well as immersive programming, for a celebration of fine wine and food that promises to become a coveted annual tradition.

“Never has there been such a large gathering of Napa Valley Vintners outside of Napa Valley itself,” says Daniel A. Hostettler, president and CEO of The Boca Raton. “We are honored to bring vintners from the finest winemaking re

gion in the world to the East Coast, paired with some of the world’s most celebrated chefs, to raise a glass for a good cause.”

The multiday experience will be orchestrated by some of the world’s most renowned culinary minds, such as chef Todd E nglish and chef and restaurateur Mario Carbone, and a dinner curated by an allfemale lineup of top chefs matched with female-owned wineries/winemakers.

It all comes to a crescendo at a gala where guests will revel in a four-course dinner artistically directed by Fabio Trabocchi, Michelin-starred chef and restaurateur of Washington D.C.’s Fiola and Boca R aton’s Fiolina Ristorante. An auction hosted by international auctioneer Jacqueline Towers-Perkins will invite attendees

t o bid on fine wines, luxury experiences, and bespoke getaways, such as a weeklong excursion to the South of France.

In the spirit of giving back, proceeds from the gala will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County and Napa Valley. This philanthropic endeavor underscores The Boca Raton’s commitment to supporting local communities and e mpowering the next generation through education and enrichment. Cheers to that!

A slate of hard-court pickleball courts double the action at Racquet Club—and the fun

THERE’S SOMETHING NEW in the air at Racquet Club, and all bets are saying it’s going to be a smash. This season, The Boca Raton is unveiling 12 total hard court pickleball courts, doubling its previous footprint in the ever-growing sport.

It’s all part of the property’s recognition of the importance of the sport to both Club members and resort guests, which Director of Racquet Sports Lauren Levine says has risen in recent years.

“We’re seeing incredible demand to play pickleball,” Levine says. “Before we added courts, players oftentimes waited for a court to open. Now with the additional courts, the wait time will lessen, giving our players more opportunities to play the sport that they love.”

Invented by three dads in 1965 who wanted to find a way to keep family members of a ll ages engaged and active, pickleball has recently experienced a meteoric rise. Last year, 13.6 million people picked up a pickleball paddle in the U.S., a 65% rise from 2022, which saw 8.9 million people play the racquet sport.

At The Boca Raton, the flood of new and seasoned players has made Racquet Club a go-to spot to dink and dig. With the variety of players now entering the facilities, Racquet Club is unveiling new programming that accommodates various experience levels, as well as specialty c linics to fine-tune parts of the game. Specified lessons on areas of the game include focuses on dink and drop shots, and s erving. Racquet Club will have various lessons based off skill levels, too, including beginning classes and lessons for the more advanced players, plus a junior division for the sport’s youngest players.

And for the social pickleball players? The Racquet Club has thought about them as well, as additional happy hour play and mixers will also be on the docket.

“This sport is so dynamic and attracts so many players from various backgrounds, so it was important to us to ensure we create programming and a space where each player feels comfortable and welcome,” says Levine. If that’s the case, then game on at Racquet Club.

Smash & Grab

This fall, The Boca Raton introduces a dedicated café and bar at Racquet Club. The brandnew Racquet Bar will become an outdoor center for both tennis and pickleball players, and everyone in between. Racquet Bar will serve flavored water, pickle juice, and energy drinks, and become an ideal post-game space for players, as well as a place to power up before a match.

“Racquet Club now has a place to be social without leaving our facilities,” says Lauren Levine, the Director of Racquet Sports.

“Having Racquet Bar within our club allows us to have a more cohesive sports experience for pre- and post-match connections, as well as just being the overall social hub of Racquet Club.”

Making Moves

Meet two members of The Boca Raton Club who took to the dance floor for a good cause

Al

Goldberg

Member since 2020

IT ALL BEGAN WITH A simple reaction:

“Why not?”

That’s how Al Goldberg responded when Timothy Snow, president of the George Snow Scholarship Fund, asked the longtime supporter to participate in the popular fundraising event Boca’s Ballroom Battle on Sept. 4, 2024 at The Boca Raton. After all, the retired chef and co-founder of Gourmet Adventures Catering, and his wife, Joni, had thought of venturing in ballroom dancing on their own, but to do it for a beloved nonprofit and educational mission was enough to send Al forward.

A complete beginner at the start of his Ballroom Battle training, Al has taken his new hobby s eriously, training three times a week with his partner, Sayra, at Fred Astaire Dance Studios (or martial arts “dojo,” as he jokingly calls the dance studio that helped whip him into shape). In addition, Al began taking lessons with his wife another three times a week. “I’ve got more rhythm i n my step than ever before,” Al exclaims.

Though he may be a novice in ballroom dance, Al has been a dedicated community member since moving to Boca Raton 34 years ago. The Philadelphia native and his wife have supported charitable events through their catering company, oftentimes underwriting much of the dining expenses at fundraisers. In addition, Al is a dedicated member of Men Giving Back, and Joni has been a leader at the Junior League of Boca Raton.

These days, when he’s not dancing, Al says he’s enjoying the retired life, spending days on his boat, The Holly Jack Attack , and attending live concerts, like the recent Sammy Hagar and Red Hot Chili Peppers shows. As for his recent tango routine at the 2024 Boca’s Ballroom Battle, Al said it was intimidating at first, but he eventually found his groove. We’ll gladly cross-step to that.

Gina Harrow

Member since 2021

GINA HARROW KNEW THAT IF change was going to happen, it would start with her. Like when she witnessed the profound effects that a life-changing wartime injury had on her husband, Army Capt. Ben Harrow. After several overseas deployments, everything changed for the Harrow family in 2012. On May 15, during a deployment in Afghanistan where Harrow led a team of Green Berets on an anti-terrorism mission, he stepped on an improvised explosive device, losing both legs above the knee, two fingers, and a large portion of his right forearm. Somehow, the Harrow family managed to move forward with their lives, and Gina credits the immeasurable amount of support they had to complement Ben’s superhuman strength and perseverance. Inspired by the support, Gina says it is now her turn to give back.

Today, she serves as the executive director of the Yellow Ribbon Fund, an organization that provides critical support to injured service members, their families and caregivers. “We were very, very blessed, and I will never forget that, and that feeling pushed me to help others,” Gina says of beginning a career in charitable giving.

As one of the 2024 dancers at Boca’s Ballroom Battle for the George Snow Scholarship Fund, Gina hopes her leaps of faith—both as a newfound ballroom dancer and steward for philanthropy—will inspire others to find meaning in their everyday pursuits.

“Similar to the dynamic at the Yellow Ribbon Fund, the George Snow Scholarship Fund creates that family support, in this case specifically around these kids that don’t have financial support,” Gina says. “And if you know me, you know that there’s nothing I love more than the military and kids.”

Let’s Face It

Can a facial ease stress levels?

You bet it can. And there’s even science to back it up.

AMONG THOSE WHO VISIT The Boca Raton, a common feeling exists: To enter Spa Palmera is to reemerge transformed and indulged. And that is no more true than after receiving any of the Natura Bissé facials offered at Spa Palmera. I would know, having just experienced one of the most decadent skin-care treatments of my life.

Nestled among towering palm trees and tropical flora, the awardwinning Spa Palmera is a 50,000-square-foot oasis of wellness that is continually recognized with Five Stars by Forbes Travel Guide. Inside the palatial setting with its hand-painted tiles (modeled after the Alhambra Palace in Spain) lies an experience that truly melts away

BUBBLE UP

A pop-up event like no other

This season, don’t be surprised if you see something new popping up at Spa Palmera. The Natura Bissé Pure Air Bubble is a traveling spa that allows visitors to breathe 99.99% pure air. The state-of-the-art space is free of contaminating particles, allowing guests to enjoy a distinct facial treatment that rejuvenates the skin and promotes overall well-being. Dates to book your Pure Air Bubble experience will be announced soon.

any woe, stress or concern. (In my case, a home renovation. Le sigh.)

It was a different situation for a couple of spa-goers I met inside the spa’s Great Hall as we lounged before our services, between a picturesque fireplace and the two-story-high arched windows. Instead of alleviating a stressful situation, they were preparing for a joyous one: Their visit was prompted by a desire to freshen up for upcoming nuptials, and they were already smiling and exuberant. It turns out, a facial is easily one of the best pre-wedding treatments to receive that effervescent, straight-from-a-beautyshoot glow.

As with all things in life, not all facials are equal. The opportunity to deep-clean your skin with radiant results comes with its fair share of options on the market, but the ones developed by Natura Bissé may be some of the most blissful available. It doesn’t hurt that they have been tested in conjunction with comprehensive neuroscientific studies, which state that the treatments can improve well-being by nearly 70% as well as boost self esteem.

Founded by a husband-and-wife team in Barcelona in 1979, Natura Bissé has a deep history in blending high concentrations of active ingredients with the power of touch and deep emotional sensitivity. Its skin care products are created with high levels of innovative ingredients and important sensorial textures that help transform the skin and awaken the senses—which, admittedly, I loved during my facial experience.

Spa Palmera offers four Natura Bissé facials that have each been designed to target different skin care goals. The Red Carpet Facial is that go-to treatment to boost your anti-aging regimen. Your skin receives a heavy dose of hydration that’s aided by an oxygenating exfoliation to remove the skin’s superficial layer that’s full of dull cells. Ingredients like lactic acid, known to exfoliate while improving moisture levels, and glycolic acid, which helps remove impurities, are the main characters in this act. Even more, the 90-minute facial is lauded for its ability to lift, fill and firm facial lines. An aesthetician applies an advance serum with anti-aging ingredients such as neuropeptides, collagen and triple hyaluronic acid to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and expression lines. Basically Botox in a bottle, right? And it’s not just the serum that helps, but the actual application, which the aesthetician applies with careful modalities that include cupping and brushing to help with circulation, which will result in a better penetration of the ingredients. The other signature facial is the Diamond Luminous Facial, which is that surefire option to get you looking your best for an upcoming event. Brides and celebration-goers have flocked to this treatment to receive that im-

mediate clean glow, which includes customized exfoliation that helps clear the skin with minimal inflammation. Available as 60- or 90-minute treatments, the Diamond Luminous Facial includes a three-step peel process to revitalize and rejuvenate the skin. The brand’s Diamond Perfecting Luminous Glowing Mask is applied, which helps reveal exceptionally dewy skin. In addition, the aesthetician applies Natura Bissé’s Diamond Luminous Perfecting Serum, which features a high-performance cocktail of ingredients to help minimize uneven pigmentation. And the best part? You are now makeup-ready with no downtime at all. There are also Just for Gents and Custom Tailored facials at Spa Palmera, both of which bring a personalized touch to your skin care service (and a nice head and neck massage, too!).

After my own facial, I emerged feeling like my face glowed not just with high-quality products, but with happiness. The stress of my house renovation had been shed, and in its place stood a rejuvenated radiance. As I departed Spa Palmera’s women’s lounge, I looked in the mirror one last time, and couldn’t help telling the fellow guests, “Wow, the lighting in here really accentuates my facial treatment.” No, they told me—it’s actually just my skin.

Glossary of Skin Care Terms

Because we could all use a refresher

Collagen: A protein that your body naturally makes but decreases in production at a certain age. Collagen can help prevent skin from sagging, giving a plump, youthful look.

Glycolic acid: A potent ingredient that can help promote cellular turnover to improve the look of fine lines, skin texture, tone and radiance.

Lactic acid: A chemical exfoliant that can benefit the skin by removing dead skin cells and helping fade dark spots and soften fine lines.

Neuropeptides: Often referred to as “Botox in a bottle,” neuropeptide creams are topical formulas that combat signs of aging by targeting receptors that modulate production of inflammatory processes in the skin. They can also slow the release of neurotransmitters that are used in facial muscle contractions that cause wrinkles.

THE BOCA RATON’S RICH HISTORY

I

T HAPPENS WITHOUT FAIL . No matter how many times Club members and resort guests step into The Boca Raton, a feeling envelops them. Even staff members who walk the halls on a daily basis say the same thing: There’s a charm that exists, a beauty that feels tangible, and an illustrious past that still reverberates today.

Leo Lentelli called "Salome."

A historic property, when it truly embraces the past and present, is the epitome of a melting pot. Different eras that can coexist in harmony and—dare I go there—embrace their differences in a new, exciting style for today and tomorrow’s guests is what most historic properties strive to become. It’s a melding of design, architecture and a je ne sais quoi that leaves everyone who visits with a feeling of wonder.

But how can you describe that feeling? How does one define that charm? I sought to find the answers myself on a recent visit to The Boca Raton.

Alongside half a dozen other history buffs who also strapped on their sneakers, I took one of the regularly scheduled walking tours of the resort led by the Boca Raton Historical Society’s Susan Gillis, the organization’s chief curator and author of several local history books. We walked throughout (and up and down, outside and inside) what’s now referred to as Cloister, where Gillis pointed out (with her trademark humor and delivery) design artifacts that add allure and intention to today’s resort and club.

I learned more than my fair share of details about the original founder, the well-known architect Addison Mizner, who opened the Ritz-Carlton Cloister Inn in 1926 and whose preference for Mediterranean Revival style lives today in the balconies, arched windows, wrought-iron details and barrel-roof tiles that are still on display. Taking his lead, subsequent architects and designers—notably, the design firm Schultze & Weaver—added to the property as it expanded.

If you’re like me and curious about the design details that have made The Boca Raton a storied property for nearly 100 years, read on. And, if curiosity has bitten you further, attend a walking tour with the Boca Raton Historical Society. You won’t be disappointed.

Salome statue outside

The Boca Raton Cloister entrance

If this sculpture could talk, what would she say? In her nearly century of existence, the statue has welcomed countless Club members, resort guests, dignitaries and socialites. She even watched over cadets who stayed at the property to train during World War II during the Army’s two-year residency at the property. Commissioned in 1929, Italian sculptor Leo Lentelli crafted a sculpture that rose from the fountain to stand at the entrance of the Boca Raton Club. Named The Slave Girl, the statue (oftentimes mistakenly credited to sculptor Ettore Pellegatta, who may have done the stonework) is believed to take inspiration from the biblical figure of Salome, daughter of King Herod. She still stands

today, towering over the head of John the Baptist, in one of the first images visitors and members see as they enter Harborside. And what a sight it is.

Entrance door of the original Cloister Inn

At Sadelle’s main entrance, several pieces of history live. Just in front of the upscale delicatessen’s hostess stand lies the original lobby to Cloister Inn, the first iteration of what is now known as The Boca Raton. The inn’s massive original dark wood doors remain for today’s visitors to see. Modeled in the fashion of the entrance to the University of Salamanca, the doors have hints of ancient Spain all over them. At the top of the door are emblems of Queen Isabella’s shield on

one side and King Ferdinand’s on the other, otherwise known as the Flag of Castile and León, whose origins date back to the 15th century. Mizner Industries constructed the cast stone that surrounds the door. It had two columns that supported a pediment and a molded coat of arms, and a pecky cypress balcony is supported by narrow beams on two sides on the second floor. When addressing the public, Mizner bent the truth, boasting that the doors came from the University of Salamanca and were 400 years old.

Guest register of the opening of the Cloister Inn, located on the second floor of Cloister

When the Cloister Inn opened in 1926, a grand ball on February 6 reflected an opening ceremony of sorts. Invitees signed the bound leather guest book, one that upon reflection rivaled “the social registers of two continents,” according to the late Florida historian Donald Curl.

Today, the guestbook is encased behind glass on the second floor of Cloister, above Sadelle’s. According to Gillis, the register is another one of Mizner’s clever ruses to elicit a feeling of Old World Europe. Mizner repurposed a contemporary songbook of Gregorian hymns and pressed parchment paper on the book pages, whereupon guests would sign their names. Appearing weathered and antiqued, the songbookturned-guest book gave visitors a feeling that even this detail was from the Old World.

The guest book is available for all to see. Take a peek at the book and see if you can spot the signature of Mizner’s brother, Henry, on the page.

This page, from left to right: Outside of Sadelle’s main entrance lies the original lobby of the Cloister Inn (inset photo shows a historic photo of the same lobby); a tome of signatures, which is on display on the second floor of Cloister, represent the guest registry at the opening of the original Cloister Inn in 1926.

Gargoyles on the columns of Cloister

All eyes just might be on you during your walk toward Tower—gargoyle and creature eyes, that is. At Cloister between Principessa Ristorante and Tower, just off Lake Boca Raton, more than a dozen columns hold up the arched windows that lead to a courtyard. Upon closer inspection, these aren’t just any columns; they are decorated with capitals oftentimes filled with the countenances and silhouettes of mythical creatures, open-mouthed and ready to protect the property. Next time you’re in that walkway, count how many eyes are following you along the way. You might be surprised at the quantity.

Original Cloister lobby ceiling

Inside Cloister, just before you reach Japanese Bocce Club and just past Spa Palmera, a piece of living history is on display. All you have to do is look up.

Inside the alcove before the elevator is a piece of original lobby ceiling from the Boca Raton Club, designed by Schultze & Weaver. The coffered ceiling with salmon pink outlines is a pop of color that leads

to either the stairs or elevator. More importantly, it’s a display of history that remains intact, waiting for generations to come admire it.

Arched windows at the south end of Cloister and stained-glass at Palm Court

Mizner was no stranger to decorative touches, especially if it provided a nod to Old World Europe. In two specific locations at The Boca Raton, his original works still see the light of day. Literally.

Two separate stained-glass windows adorn the halls today, providing a peek at the past while enhancing today’s more modern interior design. The first is at one of the original stairways at Cloister, toward the south end of the building. There, arched stained-glass windows with panels of green and blue hexagonal shapes are framed by cast stone and look out toward Harborside Pool Club. For nearly 100 years, the windows have stood the tests of time to remain intact.

The second colored window divides Palm Court from the hall leading toward Principessa Ristorante. There, panels of stained glass in oblong hexagonal shapes are tinted in a rosy orange and soft blues and greens. Today, they offer slight privacy to the daily festivities occurring at Palm Court, which serves as a lively gathering spot for cocktails and bites at the heart of the property.

These stained-glass pieces are just two of the few original items remaining in the hotel, providing a bridge to the past for members and resort guests.

Original stained glass windows from Addison Mizner's Cloister Inn still stand proudly at The Boca Raton. One is located at the south end of Cloister, and the other is at Palm Court.

Play On

For this newly minted Florida couple, it was all about fun and games during their weekendlong celebration in paradise.

WHEN IT CAME TIME to celebrate their springtime nuptials, Molly Esbenshade and Tommy Shaughnessy had one overlapping request throughout the celebratory weekend: to play.

A s ense of play dotted the love-filled weekend at The Boca Raton, beginning with greeting the bridal party with a pickleball tournament at Racquet Club, a light and lively welcome party at Harbor House, and the upbeat wedding that included the bride and groom launching fake dollar bills during the wedding after-party.

“We wanted it to be a good, fun weekend for everyone, and the wedding would simply be the cherry on top,” Esbenshade says.

After dating for four years, traveling the world together, and moving from the northeast to West Palm Beach in 2023, the couple decided they wanted to start the rest of their lives together with a ceremony at The Boca Raton. Despite Esbenshade’s quiet and unassuming nature, she wanted their weekend celebration to reflect Shaughnessy’s best personality traits, some of which made her fall in love with him.

“He’s very energetic and very loving, and always in a good mood,” Esbenshade says, a sentiment that could have extended to the wedding itself.

A fter getting engaged on a whirlwind trip to Kyoto, Japan, cossetted by towering bamboo trees, the couple got to work planning their wedding. Both originally from out of state (Esbenshade from West Virginia and Shaughnessy f rom New Jersey), the couple leaned toward a tropical venue to best reflect their new Florida lives, giving their out-of-town guests a strong sense of place. Plus, with guests spanning from young nieces and nephews to seniors, the pair felt The Boca Raton offered spectacular amenities that all ages could enjoy—from Harborside Pool Club to the portfolio of restaurants.

The Boca Raton matched everything they had desired, including organizing a pickleball

tournament for the 40-member bridal party who arrived the Friday of the wedding. Hosted at Racquet Club, the casual competition featured custom hats and paraphernalia, and it was an ideal way to kick off the fun, thanks to The Boca Raton team that handled all the details.

“I was just able to let go and not have to worry about anything,” Esbenshade says.

Later that day, in lieu of a traditional rehearsal dinner, the bride and groom welcomed their 200 guests to a Friday evening party at Harbor House. Chosen because of its proximity to the water and its easygoing yet upscale atmosphere, Harbor House was the ideal venue to continue setting the tone for a festive, Florida-inspired affair. Guests feasted on a buffet-style dinner and tasted three refreshing, signature cocktails while overlooking the serene waters of Lake Boca Raton. Light music from a live band carried out through the indoor-outdoor space, as did the waft of celebratory cigars from a dedicated cigar bar.

Not surprisingly, the theme of play carried over to the wedding day. As the bride got ready with her bridal party, her three older sisters presented the die-hard Blue Devil fan with a custom Duke University basketball jersey with

the number “25” embroidered, a number that signified the date of her wedding.

The wedding day featured a range of emotions—not to mention an array of weather conditions. As an inclement forecast loomed over their pl anned outdoor venue at Harborside Lawn, Esbenshade and Shaughnessy made the decision to move the ceremony indoors to the intimate Mizner Room, a move that the couple says gave their ceremony an extra ounce of extraordinary.

“Leading up to Mizner Room, there are these beautiful double staircases that just made everything feel more special,” Esbenshade says.

A t the conclusion of the ceremony, which saw Shaughnessy surprise Esbenshade by reciting a heartfelt poem, the entire wedding knew it was time to celebrate in grand style inside the Cathedral ballroom. Surrounded by a sea of white roses, including a grand arrangement that cascaded down from the chandelier above the dance floor, the two danced their first dance—a choreographed set filled with swings and tricks—
