Authentic Antique Posters

Picture Perfect I’m a sucker for photos of beautiful rooms and gardens. My shelves are packed with years-old copies of dog-eared decorating and landscape magazines, and tables throughout my home are stacked with image-laden design books. If you’re similarly obsessed with dazzling design, the talented pros who create it and the photos that capture it, let the page-turning begin. They’re packed inside this debut issue of Florida Style & Design, which is published by Boca magazine and included in its content three times a year. The following pages offer more than eye candy; they are invitations to step into the featured rooms and landscapes, a chance to try them on for size. You can snoop, savor and imagine yourself living inside the images all from the comfort of your sofa. And you can come and go as you please. Call it a free trial of sorts. I promise, you’ll come away inspired, armed with a refreshed vision of the look and feel you want for your own rooms and how you would like to live in them. Step inside. You’re welcome to stay as long as you’d like.

ARCHITECTURE

“If you don’t have good architecture, you don’t have a room,” says Gil Walsh, principal of Gil Walsh Interiors. She transformed the plain living/ dining space with a handsome coffered ceiling, classic moldings and integrated drapery pockets that house woven blinds and drapery panels.

Walsh satisfied her clients’ craving for color by featuring their favorites, celadon green and coral, paired with hits of blue. She strategically repeated the colors to create visual rhythm and blended many shades rather than sticking to a one-note palette of matching hues. “It’s all about balance,” she says.

Beginning with strong architecture, Walsh layered the room with carefully considered elements. From textural grasscloth wall coverings to boldly patterned rugs, sculptural coffee table bases to finely tailored sofas, each piece holds its own style-wise but also adds a layer of detail contributing to the overall design.

Walsh chose pieces that allow natural light to flow freely and visually expand the space. Open-back rattan wing chairs, a vintage palm-leaf chandelier, glass-topped coffee tables, leggy bamboo stools, a wall mirror and an acrylic side table all deliver sculptural forms without adding bulky, lightblocking forms.

DISH

EASY PICKINGS Offer your guests a bite of abundance, peace, wisdom and purity. In other words, an olive. Olives are an ancient species—the tree had its origins some 20 to 40 million years ago— and have been eaten by humans for, say, 6,000 years, give or take. It’s not surprising so much symbolism has become attached to them. Part of almost every cocktail party menu, they can also provide a conversation starter. At such occasions, just Google “olive.” “Hey, did you know that olives were the source of the Minoans’ wealth?” you might ask casually. Or, “By the way, an olive tree in Croatia is 1,600 years old and still bears edible olives!” OK, maybe it’s just best to chat about the weather. Know enough to put together an interesting selection. Most grocery stores feature an olive bar, and naturally, South Florida’s specialty gourmet stores have great selections and knowledgeable salespeople.

26

Royal Herculean These great big olives from Arcadia are unpasteurized, so they retain more tannins than many other olives.

Lucques Lucques is a cultivar of olives grown primarily in Languedoc in France. It is primarily used as a green table olive with a bright, tart flavor.

Alfonso Alfonso olives are considered Chilean, though they’re influenced by Peruvian culture. Huge, purple and brine-cured, then macerated in red wine.

Arbequina Little rosy-brown olives, often found with stems attached, and highly aromatic. Mostly grown in Catalonia, Spain, also found in Aragon and Andalusia, as well as California, Argentina and Chile.

Tournante Dark olives simply cured for several months in sea salt brine for a purely fruity olive flavor.

Kalamata Everybody’s favorite Greek olives, used in salads, cheeses and all kinds of cooked dishes. Usually preserved in red wine vinegar and olive oil, they have a beautiful purple skin.

Entertaining season calls for simple pantry-to-party snacks. Let’s talk olives.

Decide on the size of your panel to help determine the length of molding pieces needed. Consider the wall covering you’ll enclose inside the frame as well as the amount of empty wall space you would like to surround it.

2

Select and purchase stock molding from a lumber or home improvement store. For a more decorative or fancy frame, choose picture-frame molding from your local framing shop. Have pieces cut to your finished measurements.

3

Using a pencil and level, draw an outline on your wall where you want the frame positioned.

4

Give the molding pieces a couple of coats of paint before applying them to the wall.

5

Beginning with a side piece, apply the molding strip to the wall with a small amount of adhesive. Secure it with small nails (in the thickest part of the wood piece to prevent splitting).

6

Fill the nail holes with wood filler or spackle. Sand them for a smooth finish and caulk along edges to eliminate gaps, if needed. Touch up with paint, as necessary.

SPOTLIGHT ON:

The Fine Art of Kitchens and Baths

Barbara Geller, ACSD, PKBD The Place For Kitchens and Baths 561.338.7171 • Theplaceforkitchensandbaths.com “It’s not enough to have a kitchen or bath just look good. If they don’t function, they have no purpose in the home,” explains Barbara Geller, president of The Place for Kitchens and Baths. Her undergraduate and graduate education in Fine Arts provided her the aesthetic foundation to visualize the potential beauty in her clients’ spaces. Her decades of expertise as a Certified Kitchen and Bath Designer has enabled her to meticulously decipher every detail of how she is going to use that space. “In these changing times, kitchens have evolved from a gathering place for meals into a home office and often a classroom. When I go to the client’s job site I am focused first on delivering a functional floorplan for the lifestyle they lead now—and will—in the future of the home. Then, the style choices come into play, from modern clean lines to the gold tone hardware and faucets that are making a comeback. “The same applies to bath design: function first. I want my client to be able to reach the on and off controls in the shower without having to get wet. With a movement toward free standing tubs, I often have to design a deck so they can enjoy the ambiance without mobility issues. After all functionality considerations are mastered, the beauty evolves from my arsenal of endless design possibilities,” Barbara explains. “My work is very gratifying. Making my clients happy is what I love to do.”

Turning Homes Into Gorgeous Galleries

Born in Haifa, Israel to artistic parents, Orna Amrani has gained recognition for her innovative, three-dimensional original creations which are exhibited all over the U.S. and in galleries abroad. Traditional Jewish motifs appear in all of her works, hinting at the country of her birth and the holy city of Jerusalem. Her methods involve a mixture of clay, metal powders, and gold leaf, overlaid with handmade parchment and baked at a high temperature. Every project is customized according to clients’ tastes, style, and needs. She turns a house into a home that reflects her clients’ specific tastes in art and decor.

HIT REPEAT

Using repetition is an easy way to create cohesiveness among multiple arrangements. Identical flowers, similar colors or like vases can make multiple arrangements unite as one. Here, small bowls and deep purple figs add dimension and expand the simple, single-hued display.

STEP IT UP

Use a piece of stone, wood or stack of books to add height and dimension to a group of similar containers. By elevating one of the arrangements, you also elevate the entire presentation’s interest. Here, a vase filled with maidenhair fern is staged on a stone block. Below, two thick-stemmed peonies contrast with the ferns’ delicate sprigs. The display is simple yet stunning.

BLOOMS

BUILD BEYOND BLOOMS

Look past flowers to create an eyecatching display. Unexpected pheasant feathers, dried mushrooms, cacti and golden owl accents join more traditional flame calla lilies, football mums, dahlias and a cymbidium orchid to shape this unique arrangement. A gold tray and stack of books anchor the individual pieces and unite them into a cohesive collection.

FRESH PICKED

Small vases with huge appeal

Cubist Alabaster Vases, $480/ set of three, Elegant Strand, Boca Raton, elegantstrand.com

Evelyn Small Vase, $20, Crate & Barrel, Boca Raton, crateandbarrel.com

CREATE CONTRAST

Capitalize on contrast by pairing disparate colors and styles. A trio of elegant, cut-crystal vases showcase different flowers—hanging amaranthus, white calla lilies and a single chocolate sunflower with delightful results. The flowers’ masculine hues and rich textures make the crystal look less formal and add a sense of surprise.

Bel Air Mini Scoop Vase, $98, Jonathan Adler, Miami, jonathanadler.com

MIX IT UP

Inspired by the tones of an antique hydrangea bloom, this grouping of two soft green stoneware vases and a green bottle anchors the individual arrangements of hanging millet, wheat and a single leafy branch. The height and lightness of the branch balances the visual weight of the large-scale hydrangea bloom.

Isle Be Waiting Italy’s Aeolians, an archipelago of seven small islands north of Sicily and south of the Amalfi Coast, deserve a spot on your list of dreamy, must-visit destinations. BY BR AD MEE

W

hile most of us aren’t jetting to distant lands and indulging in farflung vacations, we can still dream about travel. Let’s fantasize about exotic getaways, learn about those that intrigue us, and plan so that we’re prepared to journey when the time is right. With that idea in mind, I offer a glimpse into one of the most dream-worthy destinations I know: Italy’s Aeolian Islands scattered off the coast of northeastern Sicily. Last summer, I visited two of this archipelago’s seven UNESCOprotected isles. Turn the page and dive right in. This short chronicle may inspire you to make them part of your travel future, as well.

Jagged micro isles rise from the Tyrrhenian sea near the small Aeolian island of Panarea.

S

ai guidare un motoscafo?” the Italian dock master asks. Can you drive a boat? “Si,” I respond. “Perfetto!” he exclaims, before he hands me the key and turns away. Off we go, partner Don and I, departing the port of Panarea, the smallest of the seven Aeolian islands. We motor around an outcrop of rocky monoliths jutting from the Tyrrhenian Sea before circling the island’s rugged coastline, occasionally dropping anchor to swim and explore secluded coves and black-pebbled beaches. A few miles away, the island of Stromboli huffs and puffs, sending billows of steam into the cloudless sky. We had hoped to hike the smoldering volcano, but an ongoing eruption closed it to visitors. No problem. We’ll watch the fireworks as we stroll aimlessly through Panarea’s sleepy town, indulge in lazy lunches and savor late dinners in open-sky cafes plying us with Aperol spritzes, seafood pastas and grilled octopus drenched in lemon juice. On our last day, we tackle an ambitious hike around and over the island. A stone path begins past a limoncello-colored chapel where a young woman carries armloads of fragrant lilies inside for a fairytale wedding. The cobblestone footpath turns into a rocky trail climbing through primitive, cacti-laden terrain and along the basalt cliffs plunging into the rolling sea below. Hours later, the panoramic trek ends with re-entry into the town’s winding streets bordered by

Hotel Raya’s Greek-style architecture climbs the steep hillside overlooking Panarea. Aperol spritzes and traditional Sicilian fare savored on the terrace during Raya’s happy hour. Rocky trails traverse Panarea’s volcanic landscape, offering views of beaches and secluded coves. Stromboli lets off some steam during a period of active eruptions. On Salina, sea air, volcanic soil and caper bushes flavor Malvasia grapes grown at Capofaro. Surrounded by vineyards, Capofaro’s pool and restaurant overlook the deep blue Tyrrhenian sea and neighboring islands.

whitewashed cottages and terraced gardens. Notably absent are cars, 6 street lights and designer shops, but don’t let that fool you. This place can swing. In July and August, Panarea is the Mediterranean’s magnet for international jet-setters who relish the island’s anti-scene allure as they party on their yachts and dance the nights away on Hotel Raya’s seaside terrace. We visited in early September to avoid the crush. The following day, a ferry whisks us away to Salina, the second largest and greenest of the islands. It’s rich with olive groves, vineyards, citrus orchards and roads lined with robust caper bushes. We head to Capofaro, a resort that does chic, well-chilled. The low-key retreat is part of a working vineyard where rows of Malvasia grapes stretch from the hillside to the sea’s edge. I amuse laborers with my rough Italian and an offer to help as they harvest the crop by hand. The day closes with a wine tasting and a late-night dinner in Capofaro’s celebrated restaurant. Next on the agenda: a stop at Lingua, a rustic beach club where chaises and colorful umbrellas clutter a deck perched on rocks above the water’s edge. A waterfront path leads to da Alfredo, a casual cafe famous for its granitas. Fig, almond, lemon—who can decide? The evening ends in the main port town of Santa Marina Salina, with a slow-paced passeggiata and dinner at Casa Lo Schiavo, serving local dishes riddled with capers and mint. Of course, no trip to Salina would be complete without a sunset dinner in the remote village of Pollara, made famous by the movie “Il Postino.” As with all magical getaways, the trip to Panarea and Salina ended far too soon. But with five of the Aeolian Islands yet to explore, I know I’ll be back.

Blue fans take note: The proverbial cool color is getting a verdant update. Teal to peacock, aqua to turquoise, today’s blues are getting a little warmer, a little brighter, a little fresher—that is to say a little greener. Ready to give these lively shades a go? BY BRAD MEE

The latest way to satisfy your craving for last year’s basic blue is to treat your décor to this year’s “it color,” teal (and kindred blue-greens). Like ubiquitous blue, teal is cool and comforting, but its green cast makes it more nurturing, invigorating and exotic. With shades ranging from deep aqua to bright peacock, teal pairs well with white and cream for a serene, soothing effect. It also harmonizes beautifully with terra-cotta and browns, and gets all moody when married to rich emerald and dark navy. Add a shot of hot pink, sunny yellow or vivid lime, and this all-the-rage color instantly turns playful and ready for poolside. We turned to the design world for inspiring ways to decorate with teal, and we received scores of colorful ideas.

“When you look at the Caribbean from the air above, you see millions of shades of blue. This is an awe-inspiring experience for your soul,” says Andres Silva, senior designer with Sklar Furnishings. “I try to share that experience in interior spaces by bringing subliminal combinations of blues, teals and neutral colors.” He did exactly that in this Fort Lauderdale Ritz-Carlton Residence by infusing the light-filled living room with vivid hues pulled from the ocean views and using them to enrich shapely furniture, glass sculptures and a wave-patterned rug—all set on a backdrop of white. “Teal really pops when you pair it with neutral tones, and it creates a calm, relaxing space with good energy,” Silva explains.

“Teal bridges blues and greens, has a young feel and is slightly nuanced,” says interior designer Kristin Rocke. ”To me, teal references modern, whereas blue leans more traditional.” In a Delray Beach home, Rocke used vivid shades of teal in a light-filled gallery hall. “It was a natural choice to complement and calm the exuberant rainbow of colors captured in the kid’s artwork,” she explains. “Teal is forever agreeable,” Rocke adds. She loves using it with other variations of blue and green, like aqua and chartreuse. Rocke also pairs it with oranges, maroons and pinks. “Off colors keep good company with teal,” she explains.

Fran Brady, interior designer with Clive Daniel Home, used a stunning teal-toned agate wall covering to dress a study’s feature wall in a Plantation Acres home. Concealed lighting illuminates the entire wall, accentuating the wall covering’s vivid colors and gleaming finish. Color repeats with a teal hair-onhide rug, adding to the decor’s unexpected design details.

“Every color is neutral to me,” says Gil Walsh, principal of Gil Walsh Interiors. Her projects’ palettes frequently showcase her fearless use of color. In a Florida home’s formal foyer, the rich teal tones of her client’s prized oriental rug inspired the color of the space’s furnishings and accents.

“The blue-green colorway can be used in any room,” says interior designer Susan Lachance, who paired blues with greens in a Boca Raton game room using art and accents. She also featured the colorway in the patterned carpet. “It ties the design together while grounding the space,” Lachance says. The designer explains that blue—the most popular color on the wheel—connotes the ocean and exudes a calm and serene atmosphere. Green, on the other hand, connects with the outdoors and nature, while creating positive energy. “The blue-green colorway is great because it is both welcoming and harmonious,” Lachance says. “The key is to not use too much of this colorway and to add touches of it throughout.”

“Teal always feels fresh,” says Erin Pitts, principal of Erin Paige Pitts Interiors. “It’s its own color family, really—not blue and not green.” And because it has a lot of depth and vibrance, she explains, it can hold its own in any environment. In the entry of an oceanfront home, she wanted to “bring the water inside,” so she added furnishings and accessories dressed in teal and various blues that pop against a backdrop of classic white. “Teal and blues play well together, so it’s fun to mix them,” she says.

Teal always feels fresh.”

To turn the dining room from dim to delightful, Pitts white-washed the dark knotty pine paneling and treated the space to driftwoodfinished furnishings, richly trimmed draperies and a surprising white chandelier. “I love white fixtures in breakfast rooms,” she says. “They don’t compete with views.” Drapery trim by Holland & Sherry; Penelope chandelier by Made Goods.

“Layering and texture add so much to a space,” says Pitts, who generously treated the living room to both. “My favorite houses let you see through to the water,” says interior designer Erin Paige Pitts, who specializes in coastal properties from Miami to Maine. With offices in Delray Beach, Florida, and Annapolis, Maryland, Pitts has a portfolio that covers plenty of coastline. Front-row seats to spectacular water views aren’t all these projects have in common. They also share the at-ease elegance she creates and her clients covet. You can count the owners of this Gibson Island home among them. The house, built in the ‘40s, featured a traditional décor that, coincidentally, Pitts had created years ago for previous owners. Her new clients craved something fresher and more upbeat for their waterfront weekend retreat. They also wanted something special. “These clients love and embrace design,” Pitts says. “They appreciate the details.” As a result, engaging textures, patterns, colors and treatments permeate the interior, shaping an effortless style so skillfully crafted that it actually belies the effort it took to create it. “The homeowner told me that he wanted to wear flip-flops throughout the house and feel completely at ease,” Pitts says. She responded by flooding

In a main-level hallway, Pitts concealed a washer and dryer behind sliding doors and created built-in storage around a large window. the home with relaxed-yet-chic furnishings, natural materials and a palette of brilliant blues frolicking on white. “It’s a cheerful mix that makes the entire house smile,” Pitts explains. In the living room, the designer floated two cozy sitting areas beneath the original beamed ceiling. She filled them with a spirited mix of furnishings, patterns and finishes that give the space a welcoming, put-your-feet-up style. Above, she hung two oversized, woven-wicker pendants to help define the separate gathering spaces, while adding natural texture and surprisingly bold scale. “Playing with large scale instantly updates a room,” she explains. So too does savvy layering, so Pitts laid unmatched flat weave rugs atop a larger sisal to further define the conversa-

tion spaces while delivering texture and pattern. Blue embroidered trim does the same to draperies, one of many small but powerful details that elevates the design. To update the room’s original brown-brick fireplace, Pitts refaced it with white-painted millwork, shimmering blue tile and a brass firescreen. “When a mix is good, the elements play off each other,” Pitts explains. To that end, the designer used a fresh white wash to turn the oppressive dining room’s dark knotty pine walls into a cerused and lightened backdrop for cut velvet-trimmed draperies and a surprising white chandelier. “Because it’s white, it doesn’t feel too grand, and it visually melts away as you look past to enjoy the views,” Pitts explains. ings foster a casual vibe, as do a rustic mirror and nubby, blue-and-white rug. “Lighter tones remove any formality,” Pitts says. Blue and white serves as a thread that unites the décor throughout. In the master bedroom, the colors link and temper a playful mix of patterns. Pitts draped a white canopy bed with wide-striped C&C Milano fabric panels and fashioned its bedding from a lively Schumacher damask. Below, a graphic flat weave rug finishes the bold combination. The color pairing reappears in bathrooms as lively patterned wallpapers, repeats on the sunroom’s graphic throw pillows, and performs an encore on upholstered furnishings, inside and out. One of Pitts’s fortes is an eye for color. Across the board, she rejected a one-note palette of matching blues and whites, instead favoring a range of hues. Azure, admiral, sky, cerulean—the list is long. “A mix of shades adds soul and depth to a décor,” she explains. Thanks to her enthusiastic and engaged clients, Pitts considers this project one of her most enjoyable. “It was fun because the clients were fun. They wanted something special and trusted me to create it,” she explains. “That combination always delivers amazing results.”

Ortiz and Lee oriented the grain of the fireplace’s marble slabs horizontally to create a more modern look for the main living room. A ribbon fire feature does the same. A uniquely tiered cocktail table delivers architectural dimension to the fireplace-focused sitting area. BOTTOM: Varied wood tones— from dark brown to mid-tone and bleached—prevent a one-note décor defined by predictable finishes. “The assorted wood tones add softness and warmth to the interior,” Lee says.

C

Calm and contemporary, luxe and livable, this South Florida home boasts elements of each. It is the choreography of these seemingly disparate qualities that gives the oceanfront residence a compelling character its designers envisioned from the beginning. “We wanted something that feels elegant and luxurious, but still inviting and comfortable,” says designer Rachel Ortiz, who teamed with fellow designer Jessica Lee—both with Marc-Michaels Interior Design—to create engaging interiors for this new family home. The 12,000-square-foot house, designed by Affinity Architects and constructed by Mark Timothy Homes, rises above its beachfront property overlooking the Atlantic. Its modern form boasts two stories with expansive windows opening to magnificent water views and glorious natural light. The latter generously illuminates the edited palette and sophisticated style the designers collaborated closely to create. To begin, Ortiz and Lee established a neutral palette of soothing white walls, honed limestone and European white oak floors punched with eye-catching state-

The designers created an oversized wood surround to frame in the sleek range hood and marble backsplash. “It adds an element of warmth while supporting the kitchen’s modern aesthetic,” Ortiz explains. ments of pattern-rich marble. To this they introduced a mix of pale and deep-hued woods, metals, textiles and tile. The resulting dance of light and dark is more than enough to animate and unify the décor, but the diverse ways in which the designers paired and prioritized the contrasting elements from space to space truly elevate their engaging design. Two adjoining areas—the large entry and spacious great room—introduce the changing orchestration of dark and light from the get-go. In the foyer, a canvas of pale walls and limestone floors accentuate the dramatically darker tones of two wood-slat columns that rise to pierce a ceiling partially clad in planks of bleached European White Oak. In the living area, polished beige marble forms a monolithic fireplace framed with floating wood shelves that match the dark-stained entry pillars. The living room’s ecru rug creates a stage for light-toned seating and dark-asnight tables. It’s a tone-driven flip-flop. “The variation prevents predictability and makes each space look and feel unique,” Ortiz explains. While distinct, the rooms share elements that help to unify them. “This is especially important when spaces open to one another as they do in this home,”

Anchored by a boldly striped rug, the loggia was designed to be a comfortable indoor/ outdoor space that can be completely open to the pool and patio or closed off and airconditioned during the warmer months. OPPOSITE (CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT): The L-shaped pool features a sunken Jacuzzi and raised sun platform. “The bright blue mosaic waterline tile speaks to the colors of the ocean just beyond,” Ortiz explains. A shimmering chandelier hangs above a conversation area composed of low-profile furnishings that allow jaw-dropping ocean views to flow unobstructed throughout the living room area. An inset hair-on-hide area rug and fringed leather lounge chairs counterbalance the office’s sleek, lacquered desk and built-in cabinets. Expansive ocean views fill the corner of a handsome TV room. Wave-patterned inset draperies, an oversized sectional and geometric-pattered wood ceiling detail create a relaxed, put-your-feet-up vibe.

Lee explains. The staggered-plank ceiling detail in the foyer, for example, repeats in the dining room and again in the men’s bathroom—in varied wood tones, of course. Similarly, high-gloss lacquered cabinetry replays in the kitchen, office and multiple bathrooms throughout. Water-inspired blues enliven countless accents, from plush rug and frame art to custom pillows and woven draperies. “With the views this home has, using ocean colors creates the perfect balance to blur the line between indoors and out,” says Marc Thee, principal. Materials similarly repeat. Marble appears on the kitchen counters, fireplace and bathroom vanities, gleaming polished nickel sparkles on faucetry as well as many jaw-dropping light fixtures, and dark-bronze window frames run throughout. “Repetition unites the décor and creates a rhythm that enables the design to flow effortlessly from space to space,” Ortiz says.

The designers similarly enlisted texture to create continuity and advance the interest established by contrast. Plush chenilles, patterned wovens and buttery leathers dress deep-seated sofas, shapely armchairs and sleek benches. Refined woods, natural stones and mixed-metal hardware enrich tables and consoles. Many are topped with distinct accents, from organically shaped vases to hammered metal bowls, and small objects clustered on trays. These accessories add a finishing touch that helps bring it all together. In the end, the designers’ desire for a sophisticated, inviting interior in which homeowners could gather with family and friends in comfort and style was satisfied and surpassed. For Ortiz and Lee, it’s a balancing act, but when all the elements come together in just the right way, the results can be spectacular. And in this oceanfront retreat, they did exactly that.

“It was a true jungle,” says landscape architect Fernando Wong, who transformed the estate’s neglected gardens from feral to formal. As seen from the home’s broad loggia, a landmark kapok tree and refurbished pool anchor the breathtaking arcade, lush gardens and manicured grounds. “The property is vast, but the design makes it feel intimate,” Wong explains. 2020-2021 | FLORIDA STYLE AND DESIGN

What’s a ceiling like you doing in a home like this? Dressed in 17 coats of lacquer, the dazzling overhead surface delights all who enter the entry of this recently refurbished Palm Beach home. Mind you, it’s not just any home, but a landmark 1930s residence designed and built by society architect John Volk. And while the lustrous ceiling is astonishing, it’s just one of many bespoke design elements that help make this restored residence so remarkable. “We were all excited to bring something so beautiful back to life” says interior designer Scott Sanders, referring to the

celebrated Palm Beach estate. He collaborated with an A-list team—Harold Smith of Smith & Moore Architects, interiors architect Angelo Davila, landscape architect Fernando Wong and John Rogers of Rogers General Contracting—not only to reinstate the property’s original grandeur, but also to elevate the home’s livability for the 21st century. Initially, these pros found the estate abandoned and in disrepair. The neoclassical Adam-style home had been badly neglected, its structure swallowed by vines and its landscape overgrown. While the residence was redecorated in the ‘90s

Sanders segmented the large living room into zones to make it more inviting and intimate. “This isn’t a roped-off room used twice a year,” he says. Multiple seating areas, a window-front desk and new built-in bookcases are unified by a rich palette of whites and creams, exquisite moldings and an informal mix of new, vintage and antique furnishings. A combination of skirted and exposed legged furnishings allows light to move freely throughout and prevents the room from appearing stuffy. “Too many skirted and heavy pieces would make it feel dated,” Sanders says. ABOVE RIGHT: Sanders elevated the style of the understated entry with a ceiling cloaked in 17 coats of gleaming lacquer and a surprising wall color. “The twist here is gray,” he says. “You don’t see it much in Palm Beach and it works beautifully with the black-and-white floor, polished nickle and ebonized furniture.” The benches are by Holly Hunt. BOTTOM RIGHT: The living room’s original fireplace showcases the balance, symmetry and ornamental details characteristic of neoclassic Adam-style interiors.

A spectacularly framed mirror designed by architect Angelo Davila reflects the original grand staircase. Sanders transformed a vintage Italian chandelier by removing glass globes and replating the brass fixture in polished nickle. “The space needed something special,” he says. OPPOSITE: “Our clients wanted additional bookcases in the office,” says Davila, so he and the team crafted more and added a secret door that opens to the loggia.

Designer Scott Sanders specializes in bespoke residential interiors and is based in Palm Beach and New York.

by renowned interior designer Mark Hampton, the house had since been irregularly occupied and neglected. Fortunately, the new owners recognized the estate’s underlying beauty and its enormous potential to become a modern-day family home, so they enlisted their “dream team” to restore it and make it even better than before. The iconic home’s landmark status restricted alterations of the house’s footprint, so to provide more livable space as desired by the new owners, the team added a guest house and created a second pavilion-type structure replicating an existing pool house across the pool. Today, one serves as a gym and the other as a nautical-themed game room. Inside the main residence, the team had to renovate all the operating systems and bring them up to code—an extensive undertaking, to be sure. The renovation also included new windows, modernized bathrooms and kitchen, and repaired structural elements; the list was long. The team gutted a staff wing and ditched antiquated service areas to accommodate new living space, including a spectacular dining room, combined kitchen and family room, an additional second-floor bedroom and an expanded master suite. All the while, the home’s authentic character prevailed. “Throughout, our goal was to convert the old house while retaining the integrity of the original architecture,” Smith says. “This is one of Volk’s masterpieces, beautifully proportioned with details that are incredible yet refined,” Sanders says. “I didn’t want our design to overshadow the architecture, but rather embrace it and make it more prevalent.” To that end, Sanders set out

Sanders layered ocean-inspired shades of blue to define the dining room’s sophisticated-yet-striking décor. Seventeen coats of lustrous lacquer cloak walls embellished with classic moldings. A custom white-and-blue mohair rug mimics the “variations of water,” while tailored silk draperies from Holland & Sherry introduce floor-to-ceiling swathes of deep blue. Radiant brass dazzles the eye, as captured by custom lantern chandeliers, a glass-topped table and shapely accents.

The team removed a wall between the original kitchen and dining room to create a combined kitchen and family room space. “This was an important move to bring this house into current day,” Sanders says. Designed by Davila, the refurbished kitchen boasts a coffered ceiling, double islands and elegant cabinetry. Sanders chose modern lantern chandeliers to counterbalance the room’s weighty moldings. ABOVE LEFT: Adam style symmetry defines the off-the-kitchen breakfast terrace, where outdoor furnishings by McKinnon and Harris deliver shots of bright blue to the casual space. BOTTOM RIGHT: Sanders created a fun, nauticalthemed game room inside a new poolside building. “I wanted it to feel like a ship,” says Sanders, who bedecked the light-filled space with terrazzo floors, navy fabrics and a tray ceiling filled with varnished wood. A reflective pool table base and floating benches help to visually expand the compact space.

to design interiors at once both current and in keeping with the home’s original Adam style aesthetic: symmetrical, balanced and rife with arresting architectural details. Inside the understated entry, for example, the designer retained the original door, but he replated its brass hardware with polished nickle. He saved the traditional black-and-white stone floor, but he offset it with a ceiling freshly painted in gleaming lacquer that creates a mirror-like finish. A similar treatment dresses the dining room walls embellished with exquisite molding masterfully crafted by Davila, who created, repaired and replaced striking architectural details throughout the home.

Below the two brass lantern chandeliers, classic upholstered chairs surround a glamorous glass-topped dining table. “This pairing nods to the past but is not stuck in time,” says Sanders, describing a quality that infuses every room. One of Sanders’ fortes is layering rooms with distinctive details as well as luxurious comfort, and this home was no exception. In the light-filled living room where multiple seating areas instill a sense of intimacy and ease, multiple shades of cream and white provide a sumptuous backdrop for intricate moldings, dark mahogany tables, brass accents and a mix of modern, vintage and antique furnishings. “Pieces from the past help

warm a room,” he says. Similarly layered elements flourish throughout the house. In the main hallway, white Elkins Loop chairs and a vintage Italian chandelier—replated in polished nickle—mix it up with the original wood floors and grand staircase. In the open kitchen designed by Davila, gleaming lantern chandeliers drop from a stately coffered ceiling, and in the serene master bedroom cloaked in blue upholstered walls, hand-embroidered tape trims the skirts of white lounge chairs, and modern crystal vases gather atop a classic mantel. “Layering is very important because it prevents a room from looking like its furnishings were purchased all at once,” Sanders explains. The designer’s bespoke mix of current and classic, elegant and edgy thwarted any hint of a tired, outdated estate.“We wanted to restore the property to its original glory, while adding the comforts of today,” he explains. Fortunately for his clients, that’s exactly what he and the talented team of pros created.

90

Views of sky and water fill most windows, so Sanders included blue in his palette of whites and grays. Because serenity rules in the master bedroom, the designer chose calm blues for luxuriously upholstered walls, relaxed furnishings and a variegated silk rug. Gold tones accentuate the lines of eye-catching accents and lighting, while adding warmth to the cool space. OPPOSITE (CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT): Light blue stone and a wall of curved glass enclose the master bathroom’s shower. Modern crystal vases gather atop the master bedroom’s intricately detailed fireplace. Generous moldings, a patterned wall of mosaic tile and a surprising chandelier animate the elegant master bathroom. “This is a modern take on a crystal chandelier,” says Sanders, describing the dazzling ceiling fixture.
