LETTER FROM THE TOP
WELCOME
WELCOME TO the Boca Raton Resort & Club. We are a legacy Resort celebrating our 90th anniversary this year—a testament to the vision of original architect Addison Mizner, who essentially invented the modern Resort experience. We continue to abide by Mizner’s vision today: We are committed not only to providing you with luxury amenities, but also to giving you a sense of personal engagement that transcends the notion of a long weekend or vacation. Our goal is to give you a truly transformational experience, whether through our artist-in-residence program or via our many opportunities for personal development and curated adventure. The Resort’s special character is evident in its seemingly endless array of features and amenities. Examples include the Beach Club’s elevated “Sea Level” program, the Yacht Club’s personal concierge services, the historic Cloister building, world-class dining at 13 restaurants, landmark golf courses, and the Waldorf Astoria Spa, voted No. 1 Spa in the World by Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards. The Resort is further defined by its graceful architecture, tropical
beauty and rare access to both a pristine Atlantic Ocean coastline and the Intracoastal Waterway. Fishing boats, charters, and even the 165-foot yacht Moonraker are docked just steps from our many guest rooms. Our mission is to provide visitors with rich, lasting memories. To encourage our guests to return time and time again, we are continually introducing interesting new programs—such as Maserati and Lamborghini driving experiences, international wine dinners, and special arts series—as well as improving our facilities. Two years ago, the Resort completed a $1.3 million renovation of the health club and debuted Flow House Boca, which features a dual-sided FlowRider wave simulator. We’re currently investing $3 million in our golf courses – upgrading the greens and fairways and adding playful tee boxes where parents can play barefoot golf in the late afternoon with their kids. We hope you will immerse yourself in the special kind of luxury our Resort is known for—luxury based on exemplary service, imaginative experiences, and an emphasis on personal fulfillment. We are delighted to be your destination of choice, and we look forward to transforming your vacation into a personal adventure. Sincerely,
John Tolbert President and Managing Director

SMOOTH SAILING THE RESORT now offers guests a special Yacht Club Executive Experience, which begins before they even arrive. A Resort concierge will make a personal phone call to guests to coordinate exclusive services. Upon entering the Resort, guests are ushered to the private Yacht Club check-in and are then escorted to their spacious luxury guest room or suite where they are welcomed with a Champagne toast and a customized snack. Yacht Club guest accommodations include views of the marina and Lake Boca, and most have views of the Atlantic Ocean beyond. Guests enjoy special access to the Commodore Executive Lounge with its four distinct food and beverage experiences. There are priority dining reservations, access to the Waldorf Astoria Spa pool and twice daily housekeeping service, which includes unpacking assistance and garment pressing for two items. The Yacht Club experience is the vacation equivalent of first-class passage; we say go for it—and bon voyage.
BOCA RATON RESORT & CLUB: HISTORICAL TIMELINE 1926: On Feb. 6, 1926, the Cloister Inn, modeled by architect Addison Mizner after a Spanish castle, opens as the most expensive 100-room hotel of its day at $1.25 million.
1944: Real estate and theater entrepreneur J. Myer Schine buys the club for a paltry $3 million and reopens it as the Boca Raton Hotel and Club.

HAPPY 90 YEARS YOUNG
IT WAS 90 years ago that Addison Mizner put Boca on the maps with what would become the Boca Raton Resort & Club. For almost a century, the Resort has been linked with the development and aesthetics of the city itself. • The only part of the Resort that Mizner designed is the easternmost wing. The lobby was designed by Schultze and Weaver, two society architects who built the Breakers in Palm Beach. • Legend says Mizner painted the Resort pink because it was the color of the dawn. However, Mr. Schine (its second owner) painted it pink, a color that ultimately influenced all of Boca’s downtown. • During World War II, the hotel was the headquarters for the Boca Raton Army Airfield for two years— the most glamorous barracks in all of the U.S.A. • Famous golf pros associated with the hotel include Sam Snead and Tommy Armour.

reconstructed TifEagle putting surfaces, a new putting practice green behind the clubhouse and larger tees to accommodate increased rounds. The course was regrassed with modern turf grass to improve playing conditions, and several bunkers were reshaped or removed to ramp up course aesthetics and playability. The result is a return to the course’s classic beauty and a more modern, accessible golf experience. After all, for close to a century, golfers from around the world have come to play the revered course at the Boca Raton Resort & Club, which was once played by some of the game’s greatest legends, like Tommy Armour and Sam Snead. Resort guests and club members have two courses to choose from, the Resort Course and the Country Club Course, plus two golf schools. Dave
Pelz is golf’s go-to instructor for all things short game. A school at the Country Club Course offers oneday clinics, two- and three-day golf schools and private group lessons. The Kellie Stenzel Golf Academy also calls the Boca Raton Resort & Club home. Golf magazine rates Stenzel as a Top 100 Teacher in the country, and she has recorded several years as a professional player. With private lessons, clinics and the option of a full-day school with on-course instruction, there is something for all ages and levels of experience at Stenzel’s Academy. The FlowRider is open Tuesdays-Sundays in the morning and afternoon, with stand-up surfing and bodysurfing offered at separate times. Surfing clinics, classes and private lessons are offered at the Beach Club.
MONKEY SEE, MONKEY PLAY BOCCE HAS just arrived at the iconic Monkey Bar, with a new adjacent Har-Tru court nestled next to the croquet lawn (above, right and left.) A playful complement to Monkey’s wine tastings, its handcrafted cocktails add an overall whimsical vibe. Bocce is on the house until 5 p.m. and after that, it’s $30 an hour (or complimentary with at least a $100 bar tab). Italian lessons not included.
THE QUEST CONTINUES MIZNER’S QUEST—the self-guided family Resort tour (a scavenger hunt, 2017-style) —has gone digital. After purchasing a new Resort Passport, guests will receive the password to accept the Mizner’s Quest challenge with more than 40 clues to points of interest, including history, architecture, nature, wildlife, recreation areas, restaurants, lounges and
lots more. The Quest can be sorted by “category”—family, kids or adult-only. Users can view other Quest participants in real time and compare success rates, and there is even a GPS map function to assist guests lost in Resort Land. One thing that’s stayed the same: The Quest still includes a trip to Serendipity for a scoop of complimentary ice cream.

IT MAKES sense, when you think about it logically. Why wouldn’t you grab the fish straight out of the water, walk it down to the kitchen and plop it straight into the hands of waiting chefs? Especially at the Boca Raton Resort & Club, a nationally renowned resort that has been making, er, waves lately for its farm-to-table cuisine. I mean, we’re talking about the Resort that has its own garden. The Resort that brings in its own honeybees, if you want to be super precise. But the Resort, on its own half-mile of private beach, is particularly suited for connecting seafood to guests. Especially with such spectacular restaurants like blue, Morimoto and the SeaGrille— restaurants that depend on achingly fresh seafood with little manipulation from the chef. So Executive Chef Andrew Roenbeck did what he always does: He figured out a way to make it happen. To be fair, it was
an idea that came from Chef Roenbeck’s own chefs—chefs who are avid fishermen that routinely go fishing on their days off, casting lines on friends’ boats. With a little bit of connecting, Chef Roenbeck was soon hooked up with four local fishmongers who would start texting him with the day’s catch and thus began the negotiations. “The same fish was going past me, then going to the market at Palm Beach and then coming back to me 4 to 5 days later, all because cash is king. So we eliminated that, and now we’re the first stop,” Roenbeck says. “The other thing the fishmongers were worried about was that we’d take too much fish,” Roenbeck adds. “Our volume is always high. So they told us we can’t buy every single fish from them. They said they were afraid of putting all their eggs in our basket. So they try and balance that with me as well.” The fishmongers regularly catch tuna, swordfish, grouper, snapper, yellowfin, mutton snapper, wahoo, cobia and barrelfish. Some days Chef Roenbeck gets a text saying they have 150 pounds of mutton snapper, and he responds, “I’ll take it all.” “It’s a balance,” he says. The program began in October 2015, and the

SUSTAINAB L E SE A FO O D AT TH E BOCA RESO RT We all know what farm-to-table
means, but as far as the concept of sustainability goes, it generally falls into
grayer, more confusing shades. In general, we know we should be consum-
ing seafood that’s sustainable. But drill down a bit, and it’s harder to pinpoint. Sustainable seafood, a designation
only coined in the ‘90s, refers to sea-
food that is collected or harvested in a
manner that ensures long-term viability, both for the communities that farm the
seafood and for the ocean’s health. The
Boca Resort is doing its part by working with local fishmongers to buy some of its seafood directly from them.
Gonzalo Rivera, executive chef of
SeaGrille, thinks about sustainability every day, as the oceanfront views are his constant companion.
“For me, sustainability is harvesting
with your own hands and not a massive machine,” he says. “It’s not consuming
the population of some species. There
are so many snappers out there that you can get. But everyone tends to stick to the ones that are more popular, more

“safe” for the consumer. [Here,] some
stuff is line-caught because it’s so deep.” Rivera visits the dock each day to see
what the boat captains have brought
him, then turns around, cooks up the fish and serves it to the guests that
night. That’s pretty remarkable when you really analyze it. And rare.
Lucca’s restaurant chef, Adam Pile,
appreciates being able to do his part
as well, particularly as a large consumer and large resort.
“Sustainability to me is making sure
that it’s going to be there in the future— not overfishing,” Pile says. “We’ve gotten lionfish from Eric (one of the boat
captains) that supports healthy reefs. For us to be able to do that and give it to
the guests says we’re doing our part, we are being responsible. We’re a big-time
consumer. We’re a big resort. To be able to offer the lionfish? We’re doing our responsibility.”
Rivera echoes his sentiment: “Sus-
tainability is helping out with Mother
Earth. You’re not buying something that is aggressively overharvested.”
SeaGrille is a prime example of how the Resort is able to weave together a narrative of the program for the guests. Since the menu changes every day and includes six to seven rotating fish, the restaurant is able to share intricate details about the daily catch with guests: the kind of fish, the name of the captain, the name of the boat that caught it and where exactly it was fished. It all tells a story, and each server is able to go out and tell that story. The result? Fish sales have gone up by 20 percent. And those sales have now become 50 percent of the overall sale of the nightly menu. The Resort pays slightly more for fish straight off the docks because they’ve eliminated the middleman—but in exchange, they’re rewarded with freshness and availability. “And the story supersedes. I’m willing to pay a little bit more to

Shellfish raw bar at the blue, Chef Roenbeck and Chef Scott Manocchio with the daily bounty
provide that experience,” Roenbeck says. Before transitioning to local fishermen, Alaskan black cod used to be the No. 1 best-seller on the menu at the SeaGrille. Now it’s dropped to No. 5 or 6 in sales. And while every single restaurant is able to access the fresh fish and use it on its menu (Chef Roenbeck emails all his chefs about what’s coming in each day, and everyone meets on the loading dock between 2:30 and 4 p.m.), the program is reaching beyond restaurants. For example, the Resort was able to incorporate the freshly caught fish into a wedding recently. Three to four days out, staff worked with the fishermen to see what was running and were able to provide fresh queen snapper. “We’re able to work with all those fishmongers and get in something as specific as that? It’s crazy,” Roenbeck says. But they did it: 196 pounds of fresh queen snapper arrived the day before the wedding. Chef Roenbeck hopes to add more fishmongers to his crew. “What’s difficult here at the Resort is we’re talking about volume,” he says. “How can we optimize consistent quality that’s unique and local with a sense of place? Everyone talks about farmto-table, farm-to-table, farm-to-table. It’s great that it’s raised an awareness, but it’s hard with a place like us with the volume.” The excitement translates to each restaurant—to each chef that gets to use the fresh fish in his or her dishes. “It’s totally different,” says Gonzalo Rivera, executive chef of the SeaGrille. “It’s a beautiful thing, eating a fish that just came out of the water. It tastes so briny, so sweet. The natural flavor is so fresh. And when you cook it, the presentation is totally different, too.” Chef Roenbeck hears it from his chefs every day. “As a chef, you can feel the quality difference the minute you start to fabricate the dish,” he says. “It’s a textural difference in the dish—there’s definitely a color. The fish is almost translucent. The fish coming 4 to 5 days later is going to start to become a little cloudy. The sweet flavor of a fresh fish is indescribable.” v

DAY TO NIGHT DRINKS The new trend in mixology is seasonal cocktails—with a grown-up twist after dark.
A WELL-DONE cocktail is a thing of wonder: perfectly balanced, glidingly smooth, just the right amount of kick. (Did we mention perfectly balanced?) It shouldn’t get you too drunk too fast, it shouldn’t leave you wondering if you ordered a virgin cocktail by mistake. Each flavor should meld into the next effortlessly and yet, at the same time, the cocktail must fit the
occasion. One doesn’t order an Old Fashioned with breakfast. There is a time and a place for everything. We challenged the bartenders at the Boca Resort to present us with the perfect drink for imbibing during the day and just the right cocktail for drinking when the sun sets. And, of course, they knew just how to steer us.
“For every seasonal change we make, it’s always about keying into the best that the season has to offer as far as produce or different ingredients, then creating cocktails that let those ingredients speak for themselves. I try to get unique, seasonal ingredients that can shine on their own. With a little bit of help, we can make it into a great cocktail.” — ERIC HAMMER Bartender/Beverage Director, Bar Luna

We boil [it] with water and turn into simple syrup. We add dark rum into an oak barrel for four weeks. The drink is served straight from the barrel over a large ice cube. Garnish with a cinnamon stick over one large cube. The building of the drink is done before you are served.”

ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? Interact with celebrity chefs, DJs, fashionistas and more at the Boca Raton Resort & Club.
THE OLD days of taking a vacation for R&R, a few days off the grid and a get-away-from-it-all escape may not be enough anymore. These days, people are seeking out experiences when they travel, oneof-a-kind moments that transcend great beach days and sumptuous meals. Travel newsletter Skift described the trend this way: “The world of travel is being completely upended by intense global demand for travel experiences that resonate on a deeper emotional level. Travel brands are responding by developing services that are more adventurous, more personalized, and more attuned to local culture, inspiring consumers toward a path of self-discovery.” None of this is lost on Boca Raton Resort & Club president and managing director John Tolbert,

who has introduced an artist-in-residence program that gives members and guests privileged access to a variety of artists, culinary gourmands, music performers and fashion icons. Through exclusive dinners, classes, concerts and other activities, guests can turn an ordinary vacation into once-ina-lifetime moments. “During their travels, people want to accomplish some kind of transformational experience,” he says, “and they expect the Club and Resort to integrate that into its offerings.” The artist-in-residence concept is simply the next generation of what Tolbert calls the “travel adventure” the Resort has always capitalized on, from its commitment to “preserve the integrity of Addison Mizner’s dream for the world’s greatest playground”—to enhancing that experience through amenities like a world-class spa and marina, or the elevated Sea Level program at the Beach Club. Tolbert sees the opportunity for a transformational vacation inherent in the Resort’s day-to-day amenities and offerings. “It could be

a moment or a class with a yoga instructor here, or a spiritual advisor, even one of our 12 personal fitness instructors,” he says. “Or it could be the Waldorf driving experience through our partnership with Lamborghini and Maserati.” Tolbert says the new program is a natural extension of this initiative. “We are simply curating the Resort experience even more eloquently through a wide range of artists in residence,” he says. Tolbert says these new experiences reflect guests’ lifestyles, create memories, fulfill bucket lists and elevate what might have been an ordinary vacation into a sense of self-discovery. The artists the Resort is hosting this year typically will stay for a week and interact with patrons regularly. The Boca Resort has finalized a diverse assortment of visiting artists for its artist-inresidence program, which began in November 2016 and ends in March 2017. “Members and guests staying with us, wealthy and otherwise, have either a long-held taste for food, fashion, music and the arts or are developing one,” says Tolbert. “We’re thrilled to be able to integrate these exciting initiatives into our resort programming.” Here’s a preview of a few of the unique experiences that are lined up for this year. More special artists in residence—including fashion designers with jewelry and trunk shows—will be announced throughout the season.

BAKER SPONDER GALLERY Since 2009, the Baker Sponder Gallery has been in residence at the Boca Resort and the Boca Beach Club. Throughout the Resort’s 356 acres, the $8 million sculpture project stands ready and waiting for guests who want to learn more. “Through our partnership with the Boca Resort, we’re able to expand the context of contemporary sculpture beyond the traditional confines of a gallery or museum,” says Deborah Sponder, of the Baker Sponder Gallery. “We believe in the importance of sculpture in public places and how it has the ability to transform spaces in which we live, inspire creative thinking and engage people in art experiences.” The gallery offers sculpture tours. Guests and members may also explore at their own pace through a self-guided tour.
CELEBRITY CHEFS So far, Chef Graham Elliot of “MasterChef” and Chef Jason Santos of “Hell’s Kitchen” have signed on to the artist-in-residence program at the Boca Resort. Chef Graham Elliot is best known for being a judge during six seasons of the hit television series, “MasterChef.” He was a judge for five seasons of “MasterChef Jr,” and was a contestant on “Iron Chef America.” In 2012, he opened his own restaurant, Graham Elliot Bistro, in Chicago, Il. His cookbook, Cooking Like a Master Chef was published in October 2015. Chef Elliot is the Culinary Director for Lollapalooza, and recently joined the Food Network. In January 2017, Chef Elliot will be at the Boca Resort. During his stay, he will interact with guests and members in a few ways. First, he will give signings for his cookbook. He will also host a seato-table fishing experience. Lastly, Chef Elliot will prepare a greatest hits menu to be featured at 501 East Kitchen & Bar on the Resort premises. Chef and restaurateur Jason Santos will be at the Resort in February 2017. At 19, Chef Santos graduated from the culinary arts program at Newbury College in Newton, Mass. He went on to work at a couple restaurants and moved his way up the ranks. Eventually, Chef Santos became the runner-up on season 7 of “Hell’s Kitchen” with Chef Gordon Ramsey. Since then, he opened two restaurants in Boston: Abby Lane and Back Bay

While at the Resort, Chef Santos will host a cooking demonstration on appetizers to make for the Super Bowl. In addition, he will hold a Valentine’s Day cooking class for couples and “A Nitro to Remember” dinner and nitrogen cocktail demonstration.
CORKS & CONVERSATIONS On November 3, the Resort launched an interactive wine dinner series called Corks & Conversations. The dinners give attendees an opportunity to not only try quality wines and delicious, epicurean meal pairings, but it allows them to connect with winemakers, too. “We are thrilled to offer our guests and club members a wine experience of this caliber,” says Tolbert. “Today’s traveler seeks the experiential, the über memorable, and, wealthy and otherwise, our guests and members have either a long-held taste for wine or are developing one now.” Several brands and winemakers are confirmed for the dinners, which run through April 2017. They include Justin Baldwin, founder of Justin Vineyards & Winery and Daou Vineyards with proprietor Daniel Daou. Wine dinners start at $80 per person and can be upgraded into a Corks & Conversations package. Call 888/543-1277 for more details or to book a dinner. The new Sea Level program involves day beds, concierge service and complete pampering by the ocean.
IMAGINE THE pampering perks of a high-end resort’s concierge or club level, but instead of lounging in a room with a view, you get to gaze on a private half-mile stretch of beach along the Atlantic Ocean. Your floor is the sand between your toes. And your walls? There are none. You’re enjoying the freedom of a warm, light breeze, while sipping a cold, fresh drink and getting a foot massage. Where are you? You’re at Sea Level, a new and unprecedented level of exclusivity at the Boca Beach Club, where summer warmth is year-round. John Tolbert, president and managing director of the Boca Raton Resort & Club, describes Sea Level as a “curated, luxuriating experience at the beach. Sea Level, to us, is addressing an ongoing effort by the Resort to provide the highest level of experience and offerings. Typically, you think of those in terms of rooms or the Spa, but we look for ways to enhance the overall beach experience, as well.” Launched in 2016, Sea Level
captures the essence of the Beach Club’s location, which hugs one of the most beautiful beaches in South Florida. It starts simply, as you collapse into a zero-gravity lounge chair or become enveloped in a luxurious queen- or king-sized daybed, surrounded by fluffy pillows and soft linens. The breeze and freedom of being outside, along with the magical sounds of the ocean gently rolling to shore, help even type-A personalities surrender to the calm and begin to release all that everyday stress. You can lounge on a daybed, wade in the warm shallows or look for shells along the tideline. Or you can just watch the light change. But it gets even better. A reflexologist arrives to deliver a transformative and soothing hand and foot massage. Or maybe you have your sunglasses cleaned, or your iPad charged (we say you can leave that in your room, though). Or maybe you want to indulge in Sea Level’s specially crafted menu of services designed to complement the serene surroundings. One option is a refreshing tropical start with coconut water or watermelon juice. To balance the midday sun’s effects, skin-soothing aloe shots may be in order. And as the sun begins to dip, your everpresent personal beach attendant is likely to offer a cooling mist or oshibori with a hint of lavender, lemon or cucumber scent. An afternoon selection of frozen and liqueurinfused fruit is a satisfying end to this magical day.

MORE RE SORT M AG IC AT TH E MARINA Whether it’s to cruise for miles up and down
the Intracoastal Waterway or to sail to distant places off the Atlantic coastline, the Boca Raton Resort & Club’s luxury marina is a
sought-after destination for South Florida-style fishing, sailing and yachting.
The 32-slip marina offers half- and full-
day deep-sea fishing excursions. Under the
guidance of highly experienced boat captains, you’ll discover Atlantic waters near the Gulf Stream. For pleasure cruising, groups of
members and guests can ride a Sea Ray for hours in the azure South Florida water. For larger luxury charters, consider a 48-foot
motor yacht, which is ideal for a local fishing
adventure or cruising and sightseeing along the mansion-lined waterways.
If cruising or sailing are more your speed,
the Resort offers the spacious, air-conditioned cruiser, Mizner’s Dream. True sailing, for the
full- or half-day, with a licensed captain is yet
another luxury option from the famous Resort, on a 40-foot-plus sailing yacht. Sailors can
choose a Resort-based 55-foot catamaran with captain and crew, which accommodates up
to 49 guests and sets sail for snorkeling and other adventures.
Speed-seekers can take race boat thrill
rides for a poker run, pub crawl and other charters. Or maybe zipping around the
spectacular South Florida waters on a rental WaveRunner is your idea of satisfying your need for speed and exploration.
To reserve a boat or request more
information about the Resort’s marina, call the
marina office at 561/447-FISH (561/447-3474).

“Sea Level, to us, is addressing an ongoing effort by the Resort to provide the highest level of experience and offerings.” — JOHN TOLBERT President and Managing Director, Boca Raton Resort & Club
A STONE’S THROW FROM THE ACTION If you decide you’ve been mesmerized long enough by the South Florida seascape, you can dive into some of the water sports at the Beach Club. It’s all there: schools and clinics dedicated to surfing, sailing, paddleboarding, Jet Skis and more. Although Sea Level is the “club level” for the beach, Tolbert says there’s a world of outdoor and indoor activities happening daily at the larger Boca Raton Resort & Club. The ability to provide more than 60 classes weekly and other schools and programs 365 days a year is possible when you have a private club and Resort combined. “It allows us to provide much
more dynamic, rich offerings and experiences,” he says. “At the Beach Club [we] have everything from surf school offerings to yoga offerings.” The recreational amenities at the Boca Beach Club start with an oceanfront bar, cabanas and an oasis of pools, including the Tower Pool with 42 poolside and waterfront cabanas and personal butlers. The Spa Pool is a more serene environment surrounded by tropical gardens and terraces, while the Boca Bungalow Pool at the Beach Club provides an intimate setting, with cushy lounge chairs and more. Feel like getting more physical? The Atlantic Ocean’s gentle rolling waves and offshore breezes make perfect outdoor studios for the Resort’s surf and sailing schools. The onsite surf school offers water sports galore, including paddleboarding, Jet Skiing, catamarans and skim boarding. And the Resort has more than direct access to the ocean—it can also take advantage of the calmer Intracoastal Waterway, which may be better suited to novice paddlers and sailors. The Resort’s Flow House offers another level of water fun—a ride on the FlowRider, a spectacular wave simulator that brings big waves to life, allowing most ages to enjoy the thrill of surfing without the danger.
FROM WATER TO LAND For landlubbers, the choices are wide-ranging, with a broad array of fitness and health programs, from high-intensity boot camps to beachside yoga, world-renowned golf, tennis and much more. Condé Nast Traveler, Golf magazine, Golf Digest and more have paid tribute to the Boca Raton Resort & Club’s exclusive golf courses. Home to two of South Florida’s finest courses, the Resort features experiences you won’t find elsewhere, including exclusive golf lessons with professional instructor Dave Pelz, who has coached the likes of Phil Mickelson. The Resort’s world-class tennis facility, named fifth among “The 50 Greatest Tennis Resorts in the United States” by Tennis magazine, features 12 Har-Tru and 18 Hydro-Grid courts. Guests and
members can take private lessons or join camps and events, including daily clinics. It’s not often that you get to play golf or tennis with a big-name sports celebrity. Well, here’s your chance: The Resort’s Boca Tennis Academy has joined forces with tennis legend Jimmy Connors as its new resident tennis professional. Still another way to work out in style and under the air is in the Resort’s three onsite stateof-the-art health clubs. The Boca Beach Club Health Club offers spectacular ocean views and the latest in exercise technology— from high-tech resistance training with the Kinesis Wall to advanced cardio and strength-training systems. Personal wireless entertainment centers help take the edge off hard workouts. And personal trainers and fitness classes help keep members and guests motivated and focused. The Cloister Health Club in the main hotel and the Country Club fitness facility, which offers the Hydra-Fitness Circuit workout and heated outdoor lap pool, round out the extensive network of Resort fitness centers. “We look to lead our guests in terms of providing the experiences they may have only read or heard about. And they can come here, where it’s one of the few places in the world where they can actually experience them,” Tolbert says. v Note: Sea Level is limited to 100 loungers and 30 daybeds. For more information on Sea Level, visit bocabeachclub.com or call 561/447-3272.

WELL-BEING, BOCA STYLE
The Resort’s health and wellness program brings new meaning to the idea of a life well-lived.
THE BOCA Raton Resort & Club may be better known as an international luxurious getaway. But that sense of deliverance now extends to guests on a personal, holistic level. These days, the Resort is about more than fun, sun and pampering. It’s also about wellness—a playground for body and mind nurturing, strength building, skill honing and complete and utter relaxation. The possibilities here range from sports to individual programs. Guests can opt for one-on-one conditioning for a better golf swing with a Titleist Performance Institute-certified personal trainer or slip into a late-night session of full-moon yoga, with a backdrop of gentle waves rolling in off the

ocean. There is fitness and massage, healthy meals and long walks on the beach. There is a way here for everyone to arrive—and feel better—within hours.
LET’S GET PHYSICAL Jodi Sullivan, senior director of fitness and wellness at the Boca Raton Resort & Club, says the Resort is home to an elite group of personal trainers who specialize in sports-specific training and conditioning and individualized health assessments. They help people of all fitness levels achieve personal goals, including weight loss. “If you are a baseball player and you need more rotational or functional movements tailored to your sport, [we have a personal trainer who can help],” Sullivan says. The same goes for professional and amateur athletes who want to work on a range of other sports, from passing a football to perfecting a tennis swing.

Indoor training isn’t too shabby, either. Even working out alone in one of the Resort’s health clubs is an experience. Discerning gym rats are likely to be impressed by the assortment of highend exercise options, such as an on-site Kinesis Wall, array of Life Fitness equipment with personal viewing screens for tracking workouts, industryleading functional training equipment, battle ropes, a heavy bag for boxing, kettlebells, TRX equipment and much more.
PERSONALIZED SERVICE Your Resort stay or club membership can be the beginning of your wellness journey, starting with a fitness assessment by one of the Resort’s personal trainers. The trainers are experts at assessing fitness levels by asking the right questions and observing clients perform a range of movements and exercises. Based on their clients’ wellness goals and objectives, Resort trainers recommend custom wellness plans, which include treatment and exercise recommendations and specifics for reaching your wellness goals. Or you might be a lifelong wellness devotee who embraces all the Resort has to offer. Hard-core adult and youth athletes can hone their skills and maintain peak fitness levels at the Resort. The beauty is that anyone, at any fitness level, can find true wellness at the Boca Raton Resort & Club, Sullivan says.
IT’S A JOURNEY Fitness and wellness don’t happen in isolation, with a single class or workout. It’s a journey, Sullivan says. “If you’re joining us as a guest of the Resort or are a club member, we want to assist you with your wellness journey,” she says. To some, that might mean arriving for a few days of business meetings after a long flight and needing a one-on-one stretching session or the Resort’s Jet Lag massage. Personal training sessions

The Resort’s schedule of nearly 60 weekly fitness classes is anything but mundane. Whether your preference is high-energy kickboxing, mixed martial arts or boot camp training; specialty barre, Kinesis classes, Zumba, or highintensity strength conditioning; or something along the lines of more traditional yoga or Pilates, the Boca Raton Resort & Club offers opportunities for cardio, slimming down, building muscle and flexibility and much more. Exercising inside the Resort’s state-of-the-art health clubs is always an option. But to work out under the sun or moon—surrounded by the Resort’s gardens, pool areas and alongside one of the world’s most beautiful beaches— can take exercising to another level. “Because this is such an amazing Resort, we take advantage of the many acres that we have,” Sullivan says. Yoga classes at the Boca Beach Club on the beach—at times with candles and tiki torches—are as much an experience as a workout, Sullivan says. “We also offer yoga in the Spa Garden. There’s an amazing pool, a waterfall, some greenery, and we set up candlelight yoga there. It’s after hours, so the only people in that space are those experiencing candlelight yoga,” Sullivan says. For those who prefer aqua training combined with land exercises, there’s a seasonal Land and Sea class at the Resort’s Tower Pool, which combines low-impact stretching and body weight training.

Clockwise from top, the legendary Resort golf course, biking the expansive grounds, fitness with a view, the sumptuous spa and a day poolside— everything the doctor ordered.
aimed at relieving stress and physical trouble spots could be the perfect refreshers before big meetings. Resort guests who are vacationing can continue their healthy lifestyles or start one, with a comprehensive health assessment at the Resort. Part of the journey is unwinding. And the Resort’s award-winning Spa Palazzo is just the place. A three-time winner of Forbes’ Four Star Award, the spa’s menu of treatments targets tight pre-workout muscles and sore post-workout muscles, while other treatments are designed solely to relax the body and mind. And to nourish the body, wellness-minded guests and members can choose healthy menu items at Resort restaurants that help them stay focused on their well-being, Sullivan says. “We have a full-service salon where, after all is said and done, you can go for a blowout; you can have your nails done. Or you can head over to the beach or relax at the pool as part of this entire journey. Everything is here, and it’s an experience—an amazing experience,” Sullivan says. v

ON TREND The Resort offers the latest innovative celebration and wedding ideas.
CAN A resort venue morph from a traditional backdrop to a contemporary oasis and then back again? Can it be all things to all different types of brides? In the case of the Boca Raton Resort & Club, it certainly can. Built more than 90 years ago, the Resort remains equal parts modern (case in point: its sleek Beach Club) and classical (with its multitudes of romantic indoor and outdoor settings). Its chameleon-like abilities to seamlessly transform from one matrimonial motif to another all within the same space make it one of South Florida’s most popular venues. In the past six years, more than 400 weddings, 200 bachelor and bachelorette weekends, and
100 bridal showers have been held at the Resort. And the best part? Each event was as unique as its honored guests. “We are so fortunate that our founder and past architects have designed such a stunning backdrop for all our brides and clients,” says Jillian Stevens, the Resort’s wedding specialist. “They get to host their event in such beautiful surroundings. Over the years, we’ve had many owners and developers morph the Resort into a new, contemporary setting without changing the style of Addison Mizner. Any bride, whether she’s contemporary or traditional or both, is able to find a backdrop that fits her style.” As classic as the Resort may seem, it’s also been at the forefront of wedding trends that have swept the nation. With a dedicated wedding team, from its in-house floral design professionals to wedding and catering specialists, it’s no wonder the Resort has been called a dream location by so many brides. Here, we examine how recent trends made popular by celebrities have been perfected at the Resort.

LONG-SLEEVED LACE WEDDING GOWNS Thanks to the recent nuptials of musician Jason Aldean to Brittany Kerr, full-sleeved lace wedding dresses have replaced strapless gowns as the “it dress” for any season—even during Florida summers. “The reality is that most of our summer weddings take place indoors anyways, so having a sleeve isn’t a bother for most brides,” Stevens says. Romantic and reverent, longsleeved lace gowns may be an ode to yesteryear, but with so many current fashion designers modernizing the cut, styling and silhouette, today’s lace gowns are anything but old-fashioned. Top designers Monique Lhuillier and Vera Wang have championed a modern cut with their recent collections, while designers such as Temperley and Elie Saab have incorporated plunging necklines or open backs to add daring touches. As Stevens says, “That style of gown, with its romantic long sleeves, is a perfect complement
to the Resort’s long history and architectural influence. You couldn’t ask for a more elegant setting than the Resort, especially allowing for the ability to blend a conservative but sexy style.” Grace Kelly would definitely approve.
LONG ROYAL TABLES Looking through any Pinterest board, brides are overwhelmed with images of long, rectangular royal tables that seat not only the wedding party during dinner but the entire guest list. Previously reserved for only the bride, groom and their wedding party, royal tables have recently been incorporated into Lady Charlotte Wellesley and Alejandro Santo Domingo’s Spanish wedding, giving their guests a visual “wow” with elegantly decorated long tables complete with a tablescape of taper candles and gold accents. Wedding couples and their guests don’t need a plane ticket to Spain to experience the royal treatment or find the ideal setting for this trend. Inside the Boca Raton Resort & Club is its Spa Palazzo, a 50,000-square-foot oasis built to resemble the historic Alhambra Palace, complete with Moorish arches, elegant marble and intricate mosaics. Thinking outside the proverbial box, brides are using the nontraditional spa setting to host their receptions, noting the grand and transformative nature of the environment. “If you look back in history, specifically European history, you hear of these long, elegant royal tables,” Stevens says. “When you marry that with a setting as esteemed as the Alhambra Palace

When singer Ciara married NFL quarterback Russell Wilson last summer, all eyes were on the beautiful couple. But for more intuitive onlookers, they couldn’t help but notice how natural the floral arrangements looked against the picturesque English setting. The decision to select flowers and foliage that complement the wedding venue, as if they naturally grow there, has fast become a trend in the wedding world. With an in-house floral design team, the Resort has this trend covered. “If you look at the landscape of the Resort, it just speaks to natural abundance—and our floral design team is highly knowledgeable about this,” says Stevens, who notes that some rustic-chic brides even select potted herbs to accompany floral arrangements. “The foliage is outstanding and the garden is impeccable, so you’ll see that natural elegance throughout the property. These natural accents will pop in one’s photos.” She credits the Resort’s floral design team and landscaping staff for making every floral arrangement and every inch of lawn space as picturesque as possible. Members of the floral design team have been working with Resort brides for decades, and there’s even one staffer who has been on board for nearly 50 years. “They know this place like the back of their hands, and they haven’t disappointed a bride yet,” Stevens says. v

ORCHID ENVY
There are few flowers that inspire the proprietary zeal common to orchid growers. Here are three Florida people who go blooming crazy over this iconic tropical plant.
MYSTERIOUS, EXOTIC and sensuous, orchids have represented passion and desire for eons. Millions of years before they adorned debutantes’ wrists and best-selling book jackets, orchids were coveted by their pollinators, according to fossil evidence. Some 15 to 20 mil-
lion years ago, a member of a nowextinct species of stingless bee was trapped forever in amber, its wings dusted with orchid pollen. At least the hapless insect died happy, or so we’d like to think. Humans have found orchids no less captivating. Here are some of their stories.

ANTONIO ROMANI remembers the orchid that changed his life. A 10th-grade dropout, Romani made his living finishing furniture. He was selling his products at a Mounts Botanical Garden plant sale when he saw it: a big blue vanda. Romani shelled out $50 for the plant, “a lot of money for something you don’t even know if you’re going to kill,” he says. His only gardening experience had been with strawberries he purchased from a catalogue and killed after planting them upside-down. He planned to give the orchid to his girlfriend as a “take-me-back gift” after an argument. Before he could give it to her, “I fell in love with it,” he says. “It was kismet.” When he got it home, a neighbor told him to enjoy the blooms now, because they’d probably be the last. Romani would show that guy. About three weeks later, Romani noticed a little green spike emerging from the plant. His vanda was going to bloom again.
Romani’s girlfriend never received the orchid, but she did take him back. They’re married now and have four children. And his furniture finishing days are long past. He’s known as The Vanda Man at the West Palm Beach GreenMarket, and his R&R Orchids has four greenhouses in Loxahatchee Groves. His orchids adorn corporate campuses and wealthy estates. But Romani’s also given them away. “When I see someone who’s having a bad day and I give ‘em an orchid, their face just lights up.”
ORCH ID BASICS • Light—Give orchids as much light as they will take without burning, says the American Orchid Society. Too little light, indicated by dark green foliage, will hinder blooming.
• Ventilation—Orchids require gentle airflow and potting media with exceptionally good drainage.
• Water—Orchids should be watered just as they dry out. Water
copiously to soak potting medium and flush naturally accumulating salts. Allow water to flow out through drainage holes.
• Fertilizer—Water plant before applying balanced fertilizer (such as 20-
20-20) typically once a week during summer and every two weeks in fall and winter.
Check the American Orchid Society’s website (aos.org) for more details. Good Facebook sources include Florida Orchid Growing and Newbie Florida Orchid Growers.

ROBERT FUCHS’ grandfather used to take him on Everglades orchid hunts with a rope tied to his belt to keep the little boy from getting lost or falling into a gator hole. As a teen, Robert spent summers on orchid-collecting expeditions led by his father in South and Central America. Collecting orchids like this is banned now, but back then, they just needed a simple permit—and, on one occasion, a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken as an impromptu peace offering for the heavily armed soldiers who greeted their plane in Santo Domingo. Fuchs, who founded R.F. Orchids on the site of his grandfather’s nursery in Homestead, says one adventure stands out among the others. Walking through a Nicaraguan jungle, he spotted a mass of lavender amid some boulders. He realized this was a natural hybrid, unique in the world, with characteristics of two different orchid species growing nearby. It would’ve required unusually ideal conditions for its seeds to germinate and several decades to grow to its size of about 5 feet around.
He carefully removed some divisions of the plant to bring back to South Florida, leaving the original orchid in place. On a return trip to Nicaragua a couple of years later, Fuchs looked for that orchid, but the jungle had been cleared for farming. “Here was a plant that had been there over 50 years, and now it was gone forever,” he says—except for the specimens of Schombolaelia fuchsii that thrived at his nursery. Fuchs is legendary in the orchid world. His orchids have won more American Orchid Society Awards than any others. He’s exhibited at the Chelsea Flower Show, where he met the royal family. Yet those days in the jungle remain precious. “Those were some of the greatest times of my life.”

“GROWING ORCHIDS is addictive,” says Doris Happel. “I have more than 600.” Now serving as president of the Orchid Society of the Palm Beaches, Happel had always enjoyed gardening in her native New Jersey. After retiring and moving with her husband to South Florida, her passion primarily was begonias. She was also busy landscaping their acre lot in Palm Springs. But three different friends moved away and left her their orchid collections. Happel took master gardener classes and joined orchid societies and a couple of Facebook groups dedicated to orchid growing. She coveted those gorgeous flowers she saw online. After learning more about the proper conditions needed—light, water and a regular balanced fertilizer—she saw the fruits of her labors. One thing led to another. Happel maintains a spreadsheet to keep track of her orchids, including their names, locations in her garden, when they bloomed, etc. She keeps another document with their photos. She still has those begonias—they’re the Vanda Orchid
understory. Her orchids are in the trees. And she even has Phalaenopsis orchid “trees.” She buys the Phalaenopsis by the dozen, attaches them to 6-foot (or longer) sections of buttonwood that a landscaper-neighbor gives her, and secures them upright in the garden. The blooms are long-lived and spectacular. Happel’s husband does not share her passion, but that’s OK. He has a sailboat. “The best thing for an orchid addict is to have a spouse who has a sailboat, because you can never spend as much as he does on the boat. But what does it matter as long as there’s food on the table?” v

Built in 1929, the Biltmore has hosted presidents, business titans and celebrities. Ronald and Nancy Reagan celebrated their honeymoon at the resort, and every president from Herbert Hoover through George W. Bush has been a guest there. Marilyn Monroe reportedly claimed the hotel’s original Catalina Pool as her favorite, and composer Irving Berlin penned many classic songs poolside, including “White Christmas.” Today’s VIP guests include families, wedding parties and even pets, which receive their own menu that includes a dish designed to help them adjust to altitude and jet lag. Famed architect Wright consulted on the Biltmore design, collaborating with a former student, Albert Chase McArthur. But Wright’s influence is evident throughout the property, particularly in the decorative “Biltmore Block,” a variation on a textile block he used in private homes. The blocks were constructed of desert sand onsite and molded in 34 geometric patterns inspired by the trunks of palm trees. Wright’s “Sprite” statues inspired the sculptures that grace the property. One of them was cast from Wright’s “Solemn Sprite,” and the others were commissioned and gifted to the hotel in 1985. The iconic hotel has undergone expansions and renovations over the years, but many say its design is more “Wrightian” than ever before. A recent multimillion-dollar redesign preserves the architectural history and integrity while offering modern and refined updates.

Accommodations include guest rooms and suites with an array of modern amenities, elegant furnishings and spectacular mountain, city or garden views. The Biltmore provides private cottages with terraces or patios, direct garden access and even fire pits. Spacious villas include one or two bedrooms and fully functional kitchens with beautiful indoor and outdoor dining areas that are ideal for friends and families. And finally, the Biltmore’s ultra-luxurious Ocatilla, considered a hotel within a hotel, features a dedicated concierge to attend to each guest’s personal needs, a private pool and a lounge offering a daily showcase of culinary delights. The Biltmore’s architects are celebrated as namesakes of restaurants Wright’s at the Biltmore, Frank and Albert’s and The Wright Bar. Wright’s at the Biltmore celebrates the Arizona desert with offerings featuring Native American indigenous ingredients as well as those introduced by early settlers, plus a tasting menu each evening featuring chef de cuisine Brian Peterson’s latest creations. Frank and Albert’s provides contemporary American cuisine in a comfortable setting. After dinner, the Wright Bar, legendary birthplace of the tequila sunrise, features craft cocktails, live piano music and spectacular city views from the terrace. There’s no shortage of activities to enjoy at the Biltmore, including two PGA 18-hole golf courses—the Adobe and the Links—offering rolling fairways, lakes and mountain views, as well as challenging play for even the most demanding golfers. The Biltmore’s eight pools are sparkling oases offering different
amenities. The Paradise Pool boasts a 92-foot water slide, swim-up pool bar and poolside cabanas with elegant furnishings, flat-screen TVs, private bathrooms, mini-refrigerators, Wi-Fi, private concierges and drink servers. The Bougainvillea is designed for families, while the Terrace Court and Saguaro pools are more secluded and intimate. A kids’ program gives little ones a vacation tailored specifically for their fun and adventure. Tennis, balloon rides, Grand Canyon tours, botanical tours, mountain biking, desert Jeep tours and hiking round out the ever-expanding array of other activities available to Biltmore guests.

WALDORF ASTORIA Hotels & Resorts adds a new gem to its portfolio of iconic properties this year with the opening of Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills, which represents the brand’s first new resort on the West Coast. The gleaming 12-story hotel is at the gateway to Beverly Hills, adjacent to The Beverly Hilton at the corner of Wilshire and Santa Monica boulevards. It offers guests the same unparalleled service,
luxurious accommodations and inspired cuisine they’ve come to expect from Waldorf Astoria. Like each of its sister hotels, the Beverly Hills property is distinctive in its own right, blending the Hollywood glamour and effortless luxury synonymous with the California lifestyle. “Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills will be one of the most luxurious urban hotels in the country,” says Beny Alagem, chairman of Alagem Capital Group, which owns the property with clients of Guggenheim Partners. “From the world-class design to the exclusive services, every detail is designed to create an unprecedented hospitality experience that doesn’t exist today.” As guests enter the triple-height lobby with its contemporary Art Deco design, they’ll be dazzled by hand-painted murals of California landscapes and custom chandeliers. They also might notice a familiar sight—the signature Waldorf Astoria clock. Floor-to-ceiling windows in each of the 170 guest rooms afford spectacular views and open onto oversized private balconies that beckon guests to relax in a comfy chaise, sip something cool and partake in a little California dreamin.’ Spacious Villa Suites on the third floor feature private manicured garden terraces. With such accommodations, guests may not want to venture beyond their rooms or suites. And they needn’t; room service, after all, was literally invented by the original Waldorf Astoria New York in the 1930s. But famed restaurateur Jean-Georges Vongerichten provides more than scrumptious fare. The Michelin star-rated chef creates sophisticated culinary experiences. Vongerichten is known for his involvement in every aspect of his restaurants in New York and around the globe—from concept to menu to restaurant design, as well as staff selection and training—and for constantly developing new ideas based on his world travels. In his West Coast debut at the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills, Vongerichten employs his imagination while taking advantage of California’s rich abundance of fresh organic treasures sourced from independent farmers and fishmongers. Guests may choose indoor or outdoor dining options either at the signature Jean-Georges restaurant or poolside on the rooftop deck. The pool deck is the largest of its kind in Beverly Hills, and features VIP cabanas, lounge areas and a private pool situated amid lush landscaping. The Waldorf Astoria property also offers select retailers including Graff Diamonds, and a worldclass 5,000-square-foot spa and 6,300 square feet of meeting and special events space. v

OUT WITH THE OLD Amid a changing art market, Baker Sponder Gallery searches new horizons.
THE PAST year has been one of change for the artwork at the Boca Raton Resort & Club, a fact that’s most visible before you enter the main lobby. Boaz Vaadia’s “The Family,” the earthen bronze sculpture of mother, father and child that has greeted visitors to the pink paradise for so many years it had become a fixture on the property, is gone. The “Family” relocated to a sculpture park in Ohio. Their replacement, thankfully, is no less formidable. It’s a pair of black-and-white heads from worldrenowned Japanese ceramicist Jun 126
|
Kaneko, which seem to be conversing at the Resort’s entrance. “That’s the whole idea of a sculpture project, not to become stagnant,” says Deborah Sponder, co-president of the Resort’s Baker Sponder Gallery. “[Management] likes the idea of a change.” Sponder is no stranger to adjusting to a fluid artistic landscape. This summer, she shuttered her flagship gallery in Boca’s once-thriving Gallery Center after 28 years, citing an art market now dominated by fairs and e-commerce instead of physical galleries. The successful premiere, in March 2016, of the Art Boca Raton fair at Florida Atlantic University has helped fill the void. Sponder is now a board member of the fair, and she expects the Resort to play a role in its expanded 2017 edi-

tion March 15-19, including hosting events at the Resort and providing lodging for visiting artists. “I moved to Miami thinking that Boca had its heyday here many years ago,” she says. “And then I see such a resurgence here. And I saw that from Art Boca. I think that’s going to change the face of Boca, the whole feeling that Boca doesn’t have what Palm Beach or Miami has.” Part of that sense of renewal is already evident inside the Resort, a longtime bastion for monumental sculpture that is now exhibiting wall art for the first time since Sponder’s gallery moved in. This includes the bold abstract sculpture of Bernar Venet that hangs in the Cathedral Room and the “Book128

who has enjoyed a meteoric rise after being contracted to install giant sculptures at One World Trade Center. She’s also thrilled to present up-and-coming environmental artist William Rosewood, whose sculpture collection is titled “The Richness of the Nature We Destroy.” He re-creates skulls of extinct and endangered animals— rhinos, mountain gorilla, Siberian tigers—and smothers them in gold. “Japanese have this method, if there’s damage to a piece, to put gold in it to highlight the damage and show the imperfections,” Sponder says. “They don’t discard it. That’s part of his whole concept. It’s something that is not just pretty to look at. It has a story behind it, and it’s educational when people take the sculpture tours. It’s always nice to have a connection beyond the visceral—that’s what we look for.” Artists like these might not have graced the Resort’s walls and floors a few years ago, but Sponder says President John Tolbert has brought a different sensibility to the institution’s art collection.

“He has a more contemporary outlook [than past presidents],” Sponder says. “He’s a very savvy collector himself. We haven’t seen that before. He attends art fairs—Art Basel, Art Southampton. And he follows the trends. So he knows, and he’s more open to seeing what is on the horizon. And that’s very exciting, because that’s where the art world is.” v

EACH FEBRUARY, the Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance dazzles with a three-day series of extravagant events hosted at the Boca Raton Resort & Club. Founded by Rita and Rick Case of Rick Case Automotive Group and under the direction of Founding Event Chair James E. The 11th annual Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance presented by MercedesBenz and AutoNation will celebrate Auburn, Cord and Duesenberg as the Marques of the Year and the 50th anniversary of 1967 Pony Cars. “The entire Concours team is comprised of a group of about 300 volunteers who dedicate their personal time to the planning and execution of the event,” says Brian Quail, president and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County. “In 2015, the event atMIZNER’S DREAM

ASSET & LAWSUIT PROTECTION to Protect Everything You Own From Everyone, Every Time! Lawsuits have become big business, especially since the economic downturn. They’re a cheap way for people to make lots of money, often with an investment
5
of just a few hours’ time. Consider -- the plaintiff may never even have to prove a thing; the prospect of spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal bills can scare a defendant into opting for a settlement without ever putting up a fight. Even if he did nothing wrong. No one’s immune from lawsuits, but people with a lot of assets showing are especially vulnerable. If someone thinks you’ve got a lot to lose – and thus, they’ve got a lot to gain – you become a choice target. People who are less affluent are vulnerable in a different way: If a person with $100,000 in assets gets sued for $1 million, they’ll be wiped out, whereas the person with $5 million can survive a $1 million lawsuit.
1 2 3 4
Inventory your wealth. Most people have a lot more than they think. Take stock of valuable domain names, telephone numbers, intellectual property, potential inheritances, and other liquid and non-liquid assets. Convert non-exempt assets into exempt assets. State laws protect some personal assets from lawsuits and creditors. Those assets typically include your primary residence; personal items such as furniture and clothing; pensions and retirement funds; and life insurance. Find out the exemptions for your state and convert non-exempt assets (i.e. cash) into exempt assets (i.e. life insurance). Don’t rely solely on liability insurance. Buy as much insurance as you can; it’s cheap and it helps you sleep at night. But realize that 70 percent of claims are not covered. Your coverage may be inadequate for a particular suit; your insurance company may go bankrupt. Having insurance and an asset protection plan is the belt and suspenders approach to hanging onto your pants. Don’t title your assets solely to your spouse or to “straw men.” They may have more financial problems than you.
6 7 8
Hillel L. Presser, Esq., MBA
Protect your assets with liens. What is a $100,000 car worth if you owe $95,000? What is a $1 million house worth if you owe $950,000? Take out lines of credit. Record mortgages against your property. Make all of your assets valueless. Become an unattractive candidate for a lawsuit. Transfer your assets to a protective entity. The key to asset protection is to own nothing while controlling everything. Transfer any non-exempt assets out of your name to protective entities such as trusts, LLC’s (limited liability companies), limited partnerships, etc. Utilize International asset protection. Enjoy an even greater degree of privacy and debtor protection with the many additional legal and procedural obstacles that creditors have to face in International jurisdictions. Keep your plan up to date. Laws change every year. Have your plan reviewed yearly.
Hillel L. Presser, Esq., MBA represents individuals and businesses in connection with the establishment of comprehensive asset protection plans that incorporate both domestic and international components. Hillel Presser has been featured in numerous newspapers and magazines, among them Forbes, Sports Illustrated, the Robb Report, the Houston Chronicle, and the Los Angeles Times. He has also appeared on several radio and television networks such as FOX, BRAVO, NBC, ABC, and CBS and has been profiled in the international press in Canada, Germany, Greece, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. He has represented some of today’s most well-known business owners, celebrities and professional athletes. Hillel Presser has authored several books and articles on Asset Protection and Law including Financial Self – Defense, The Lawyers Law of Attraction, Asset Protection Secrets, Financial Self – Defense (Revised Edition), Asset Protection in Financially Unsafe Times (foreword), and Captive Insurance Companies (foreword) just to name a few.
