LETTER FROM THE TOP

WELCOME

WELCOME TO the Boca Raton Resort & Club! Our celebrated Resort was founded by architect Addison Mizner in 1926, the visionary behind the modern resort experience. Boca Raton Resort & Club abides by Mizner’s vision to this day: We are devoted to imbuing the member and guest experience with a sense of personal engagement that goes deeper than the typical weekend or vacation getaway. Our goal is to give you a truly transformational luxury experience—to help you create resonant, lasting memories. Our Resort offers plentiful opportunities for personal development, curated adventure and pure enjoyment. Examples include the Beach Club’s elevated “Sea Level” program, worldclass dining at 13 restaurants, landmark golf courses, and the Waldorf Astoria Spa. At The Yacht Club, our newly reimagined waterfront hotel, guests enjoy magnificent views from private balconies and receive special attention from personal concierges. The Resort is further characterized by its graceful architecture, verdant beauty and unique access to both a pristine ocean coastline and the Intracoastal Waterway. Fishing boats, charter watercraft and luxury yachts are docked just yards from our many guest rooms. To encourage our guests to return time and time again, we are continually introducing new programming. Our popular Artist-in-Residence series offers members and guests indepth experiences featuring luminaries in the worlds of music, haute cuisine, fine wine and the visual arts. Our monthly calendar offers something for all ages and interests—we have featured everything from Maserati driving experiences to beach yoga to bocce tournaments and much, much more. We hope you will immerse yourself in the special kind of luxury our Resort is known for— luxury based on exemplary service, unique experiences and the promise of personal fulfillment. We are delighted to be your destination of choice, and thank you for your time with us. Sincerely,

John Tolbert President and Managing Director

The Resort’s KarmaVibes events, held on select weekends, are yoga sessions on the croquet lawn that celebrate mindfulness and rhythm, with proceeds benefiting local charities. Chase Rice

ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE THE BOCA RESORT, already known for its artist-in-residence program, assumed a musical edge this summer with two innovative immersion experiences for vacation guests seeking more than beach time. Country megastar Chase Rice, Broken Bow Records’ Platinum-certified artist, in partnership with Jack Daniels’ Tennessee Fire, performed at the Resort’s special vacation experience, which included a meet-and-greet on a yacht sail, followed by a waterfront concert at the Resort’s Garden Pool. Later this summer, the Resort hosted its second singer-songwriter event, “The New Sounds of Nashville,” which brought Nashville songwriters, many in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, together with guests for what was described as a “bespoke and interactive journey of the songwriting experience,” from the initial writing stages to creating a smash hit. The weeklong event, curated by Broadcast Music Inc. (BMI), included social events such as a Bourbon Social, intimate concerts, a sunset sail, Lobsterfest and more—in an up-close-and-personal format with some of Nashville’s most respected songwriters and singers.

PAWS IN PARADISE THE RESORT MAY be an international icon, but it has not forgotten its four-legged friends. The new Paws in Paradise program invites guests to experience first-class luxury service with their pups in tow. “Since adopting Hays, the resort’s ‘canine director’ and puppyin-training as part of the Assistance Dogs of Hawaii Program, we were inspired to a launch a pet-friendly program that speaks to the luxury of the Resort,” said John Tolbert, president and managing director of Boca Raton Resort & Club. “Hays also served as an inspiration for the launch of the Resort’s fundraising efforts for service dogs, and we could not be more excited to find additional ways to give back to our community and to all of our canine guests.” In fact, Hays himself will greet his colleagues at check-in, who will receive a welcome letter, water and food bowls, a luxury dog bed, and access to the dog park at the Bungalows. The Resort also provides dog sitting and walking, “Nanny Cams” and resort-branded wardrobe accessories. In partnership with Chateau Poochie, a local, full-service luxury canine hotel, pampered grooming and pet spa treatments are also available. Naturally, the Chateau Poochie limo offers both pickup and drop-off for its canine guests.

GOLF REIMAGINED FOR CLOSE TO A CENTURY, golfers from around the world have come to play the revered course at the Boca Raton Resort & Club, which was once played by some of the game’s greatest legends, like Tommy Armour and Sam Snead, and which recently underwent a massive renovation. Resort guests and club members have two courses to choose from: the Resort course and the Country Club course, plus two golf schools. Dave Pelz is golf’s go-to instructor for all things short game. His school at the Country Club course offers oneday clinics, two- and three-day golf schools and private group lessons. The Kellie Stenzel Golf Academy also calls the Boca Raton Resort & Club home. Golf magazine rates Stenzel as a “Top 100 Teacher” in the country, and she has recorded several years as a professional player. Between private lessons, clinics and the option of a full-day school with on-course instruction, there’s something for all ages and levels of experience at Stenzel’s academy. CORKS & CONVERSATIONS

BOCAROONS…

THE RESORT’S ARTIST in Residence program features a very popular interactive series featuring a gourmet dinner paired with special wines from visiting world-renowned winemakers. “We are thrilled to offer our guests and club members a wine experience of this caliber,” said John Tolbert, president and managing director of the Boca Raton Resort & Club. “Our guests and members have either a long-held taste for wine or are developing one now, and this series offers the opportunity to refine their taste buds, sharpen their knowledge and discover the different flavors of worldclass vineyards,” added Tolbert. This series is limited to Resort guests and members, and includes the wine dinner of choice for two guests, luxurious accommodations, daily breakfast in Palm Court and a gourmet welcome amenity. ADDISON MIZNER IS the iconic architect of Boca Raton and Palm Beach, and it is his vision that defined the Boca Raton Resort & Club in the early years of the Florida land boom. Aside from his legendary architecture, Addison Mizner is also known for his love of exotic pets, specifically a spider monkey named Johnnie Brown. Legend has it that Mizner—clad in silk pajamas, with Johnnie Brown on one shoulder and a macaw or a toucan on the other—would wake the hotel’s chef late at night for a midnight snack he invented, the “Bocaroon”— a chocolate, orange and coconut macaroon. Mizner ate the chocolate himself, gave the monkey the orange and shared the coconut with his bird. Today, Johnnie Brown is buried in Palm Beach— one of only two graves on the island. He was laid to rest in the courtyard of Via Mizner, Addison Mizner’s selfstyled home off Worth Avenue. His epitaph reads: “Johnnie Brown, the human monkey.” And the Bocaroon? Guests can order theirs in advance.

MONKEY SEE, MONKEY PLAY THE MONKEY BAR is serving up a little bocce with its handcrafted cocktails these days. The adjacent Har-Tru bocce court nestled next to the croquet lawn is a playful diversion and is on the house until 5 p.m. After that, it’s $30 an hour (or complimentary with a $100 minimum bar tab). Italian lessons not included.

BOCA RATON RESORT & CLUB: HISTORICAL TIMELINE 1926: On Feb. 6, 1926, the Cloister Inn, modeled after a Spanish castle by architect Addison Mizner, opens as the most expensive 100-room hotel of its day at $1.25 million. 1928: The Inn is purchased by Philadelphia utility magnate Clarence Geist and expands to include more guestrooms, the former Cabana Club and a new golf course.

1930: The Cloister Inn reopens after $8 million in renovations as the Boca Raton Club. It runs as a private club, open seasonally from January to March until Geist’s death in 1938.

1940: U.S. Army Air Corps trainees occupy the Resort during World War II and remain for four years. They call the property “the most elegant barracks in history.” 44

1944: Real estate and theater entrepreneur J. Myer Schine buys the club for a paltry $3 million and reopens it as the Boca Raton Hotel and Club.

1956: Arthur Vining Davis, former Alcoa CEO, buys the hotel and surrounding property for $22.5 million. Davis later forms Arvida Corp., which owns and operates the hotel for about 27 years. 1969: Arvida begins a $14 million expansion program, including the 27-story Tower and golf villas. In addition, a conference center gives the hotel a balance of leisure and business. 1980: The Boca Beach Club replaces the old Cabana Club as a $20 million addition with 214 rooms, eight suites, a halfmile of private Atlantic beach and two restaurants.

1983: The Boca Raton Hotel and Club is sold to the Boca Raton Hotel & Club Limited Partnership and VMS Realty Corp. 1988: The property becomes known as the Boca Raton Resort & Club and acquires the Boca Country Club on Congress Avenue, about seven miles from the Cloister. It features luxury homes and condominiums, a championship 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, a fitness center and dining facilities for hotel guests, club members and property residents.

1991: The Boca Raton Resort & Club undergoes an $11 million renovation, bringing the total refurbishing

expenditures to $55 million since 1983. 1993: The Boca Raton Management Company replaces VMS Realty Corp. as the general partner for the Boca Raton Hotel & Club Limited Partnership. 1996: Guest rooms and suites in the Cloister and Tower undergo renovation, and a $10 million tennis and fitness center opens as construction begins on Mizner Center, a $40 million meeting and catering facility. 1997: H. Wayne Huizenga and Florida Panther Holdings Inc. purchases resort for $325 million; Gene Bates completes $6.5 million redesign of the

GREEN IS THE NEW BLACK THE RESORT HAS long embraced sustainable values; even in its early days it was known for its lush and extensive herb garden, which the chef has always used religiously. Today the Resort is on the forefront of the green movement, thanks to partnerships with local chefs, fishermen and a beekeeper, for starters. The Resort also provides paper straws and keeps a butterfly garden on the top level of the Great Hall. It has a dunes restoration project at Boca Beach Club and a golf course certified as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. The Resort even holds two sea turtle hatchling release events on the beach in September in partnership with Boca’s Gumbo Limbo Nature Center.

SEASIDE LUXE & FUN

IMAGINE THE pampering perks of a highend resort’s concierge or club level, but instead of lounging in a room with a view, you get to gaze on a private half-mile stretch of beach along the Atlantic Ocean. Your floor is the sand between your toes. And your walls? There are none. You’re enjoying the freedom of a warm, light breeze, while sipping a cold, fresh drink and getting a foot massage. This is Sea Level, with its zero-gravity lounge chair or king-sized daybed, surrounded by fluffy pillows and soft linens. And its on-call reflexologist (hand and foot massage) on weekends or specially crafted menu of services (skin-soothing aloe shots— cooling mist or oshibori— with a hint of lavender, lemon or cucumber scent, anyone?). The beach never felt so good.

BETWEEN SOARING ABOVE the Intracoastal and indulging in first-class service on the beach, the Resort offers its guests a wide spectrum of water sports and beach fun. The best option, of course, is its “Sea Level” experience—which is Resort code for A-level when it comes to pampering, starting with your own king-sized day bed—replete with luxurious pillows and linens— right on the beach. Queen-sized day beds are also available, as well as upgrades such as oversized Bliss Lounge chairs, clamshell chaise lounges and umbrellas. While soaking up the sun and the sea breezes, you’ll enjoy first-class service from head to toe (literally), including a personal beach attendant to grant your every wish and complimentary hand and foot massages from a reflexologist (on weekends) and phone-charging equipment. In short, The Sea Level experience offers guests a truly indulgent way to enjoy South Florida’s aquamarine waters and its pristine sandy beaches—the ultimate outpost for sun lovers between strolling on the beach or taking a dip in one of the Beach Club’s three swimming pools.

F LO W H O USE Budding Kelly Slaters will not want to miss the Flow House, destination central for surfing at the Resort, through the California beach-themed Shaka Bar & Grill and the dual-sided FLOWRIDER® stationary wave. This attraction allows for flow-surfing and body-boarding for the ultimate “surf-on-turf” experience. Special events throughout the year feature competitive surfer meet-and-greets and special FLOW Tour competitions. From sea to shore, the Resort has thought of every detail to make your waterfront experience an unforgettable one. All you need to do is dive in.

WAT E R SP O RTS From surfing to snorkeling offshore on a reef to flyboarding, Costa del Este offers a variety of lessons that allow guests to learn from some of the best in the business. From non-motorized water sports like paddleboards and sailing to motorized sports like WaveRunners and banana boats, the Costa del Este team is ready to get wet and wild with guests. By adding a Watersports Membership to their Boca Raton Resort & Club Membership, members have full access to nonmotorized water sports equipment (paddleboards, kayaks, surfboards, sailboats, tubes and body boards), receive discounts for accompanying guests, and have access to monthly paddle, kayak and surf clinics.

M OTO R AWAY While not included in the Watersports Membership, Costa del Este offers plenty of motor-filled fun for guests and members. One of the most popular attractions are the banana boat rides, an activity popular with children and perfect for the whole family and the daring flyboarding, a popular new sport where participants can literally fly above the water through the power of a Jet Ski. v

From Sea Level pampering to Flowriding to flyboarding, the Resort offers all manner of coastal fun.

An Affair To Remember The Resort offers the perfect venue for any occasion—weddings to weekends with the girls— and the planners to help make it happen.

THE SUMMER 2019 wedding of Jesse and Amanda Rack at the Boca Raton Resort & Club was a true fullcircle moment—just like the ring on her finger. A year prior—exactly to the day—Jesse proposed to his girlfriend while they were spending time together at the Resort. The property was a special place for the Boca Raton residents: Amanda vacationed there with family as a child, and the couple celebrated its one-year dating anniversary onsite. It was truly meant to be. Amanda, who works in sales, first met Jesse, who runs an electrical contracting business with his father, at Florida Atlantic University. Both lifelong athletes, they often bumped into each other in the campus athletic building. Romance soon bloomed. Fast-forward five years, and they decided on the Resort for the wedding, working with Deanna DeCraepeo, a wedding specialist and senior wedding catering sales manager, and Carlos Marquez of Boca by Design, the property’s onsite special events planner.

The couple’s goal was an event that was elegant but understated; reflective of their personalities; and welcoming for their 180 guests, many of whom traveled from the Northeast. Because they’re such outdoorsy people, Amanda says, she had always envisioned an outdoor wedding: “But since the date of the wedding had significance, we went with an indoor wedding due to the heat.” They chose the Cathedral Ballroom in the Cloister for the ceremony and reception, with the cocktail hour in the Palm Court. They weren’t disappointed. “The Cathedral Ballroom is named that because it actually does look like a cathedral,” Amanda says. “We’re both Catholic. So, not having a church wedding, it still felt like we were in a church because the room is so grand with high ceilings, columns. The room is so beautiful.” Amanda envisioned the florals being organic, elegant and simple, with natural hues of white and green. “Our flowers were beautiful. We did it with Boca By

Design. Carlos nailed it,” she says. “My favorite part was we actually decorated the center chandelier with greenery and some flowers hanging down from it. It was the centerpiece of the dance floor, and that really made everything come together.” DeCraepeo agrees that the venue turned out wonderfully: “They wanted something very elegant, not too overdone to complement the room, which is so gorgeous. I think they achieved their dream. When they had that first look, their breaths were clearly taken away.” Next, since the couple wanted the wedding to be “an entire weekend party,” DeCraepeo says, a lot of thought and consideration was put into the cocktail hour and reception, which featured a DJ from Vision DJs. “For the cocktail hour, we had a bunch of passed hors d’oeuvres ranging from steak, fish, mushroom truffle bites,” Amanda says. “Station-wise, we had a shrimp scampi station, a risotto station and a cheese display. Our whole family is Italian, so when it comes to cocktail hour, we like to do it big.” Although some grooms let their brides do all the planning, Jesse definitely had his own ideas, DeCraepeo says, including what spirits would be served at the premium bar. After a dinner with chicken and fish options, the wedding cake was a show-stopper. Made by the Resort’s Pastry Chef Steve Day, it contained layers of traditional white cake with cannoli filling and chocolate chips, chocolate cake with chocolate mousse and raspberries, and more white cake. Handmade gold eucalyptus leaves added visual interest. The cannoli

was the couple’s way of “bringing a little bit of Italian flair into the cake,” DeCraepeo says. Guests who stayed to party were in for a special treat: The couple arranged for a late-night snack of McDonalds, including 100 burgers, 100 orders of chicken nuggets and 100 orders of French fries. “The guests were obsessed,” Amanda says. “I’m pretty sure everything was gone in five minutes.” Looking back on her special day—which was nearly a year in the making, in terms of planning— Amanda couldn’t have been happier. “It was a dream,” she says. “Everything came together so perfectly, and it was gorgeous. Deanna was amazing, and so was Carlos—all the vendors. People are still calling me up saying how awesome it was.” She says she wouldn’t hesitate to work with Deanna and the Resort team again for other special events. “They were very accommodating and always there if I was freaking out and needed to call or email,” she says. “They were always very responsive. They knew exactly what we wanted and did everything perfectly.” DeCraepeo felt likewise, she says, as she truly enjoyed working with Jesse and Amanda. “They just had a great energy to them,” she says. “I’ve been doing this 10 years and have worked with incredible couples, but just how welcoming they always were—from the very first meeting— made this so special. I felt like I was doing this event for my friends.” v

Jesse and Amanda Rack had their dream wedding at the Resort.

Fresh & Clean

Culinary trends at the Resort reflect the overall movement toward fresh, sustainable and healthy—but no one’s leaving flavor behind.

ONE OF THIS SEASON’S notable trends is to reflect a sense of place—a regional identity—in the menus chefs create. According to Chef Andrew Roenbeck, executive chef at the Waldorf Astoria’s Boca Raton Resort & Club, who oversees 13 property restaurants plus hundreds of events and banquets, the desire to establish a sense of place takes the popular farm-totable trend to a whole new level. Instead of simply incorporating locally produced ingredients, Roenbeck says restaurants are crafting menus that highlight the region’s most notable products, whether it’s the Florida orange or hearts of palm. As he sees it, it allows diners to more fully experience where they are, a chance to realize that, yes, they are dining in the Sunshine State, with all its eccentric tropical glory. For example, at a recent corporate event hosted at the Resort, the elegant sunset barbecue had all the traditional dishes and fixings—with one notable addition: alligator ribs. “I remember watching people from afar to get their reactions,” Roenbeck says. “We had a sign noting the

plate had alligator ribs. Two people walked up and said to each other, ‘Does this sign say alligator?’ One of them said, ‘Ew’ which is the last thing as a chef you want to hear, and the other said, ‘It tastes like chicken.’ Either way, we created a conversation in which maybe one of them will go back home to their friends and family and say they tried alligator ribs in Boca Raton.” Alligator meat aside, Roenbeck says he wants guests and members—whether they are traveling from afar or locally—to leave with a certain memory of the Resort and its locality. That includes fresh fish caught in local waters just hours before it’s served at the restaurants. The Resort works with six local fishermen, many of whom will text Roenbeck as they dock at the Boca Inlet to announce what the exact haul is for the day. The importance of locality is not lost on the guest. In fact, it’s appreciated, with fresh, locally caught fish the top-selling item on the property. Oftentimes, the wait staff will communicate to diners specific details about the fish, including the name of the captain who

caught it, the name of his or her boat, and the exact location it was caught. “It screams ‘sense of place,’” Roenbeck says. “It’s important that we understand the culture and food diversity around the globe, but we want our guests to have a memory and a sense of place here in Boca. We can take global ingredients, and make them relevant to our property. We constantly ask ourselves: ‘How do we create that touch of Boca in our cuisine?’” He credits the guests, whose well-traveled, well-educated palates push his culinary team to think outside of the traditional restaurant box. “Our guests have lifestyles that are high, their travel is first class, and they stay in fabulous places around the world when they travel,” Roenbeck says. “They can quickly discern a restaurant for its value. It’s that type of client that you want. They continue to push and develop our industry. What’s dangerous is when you don’t have that type of client and instead have one that continues to accept mediocrity.” For Chef Adam Pile, executive chef of the Tuscan-

inspired restaurant Lucca, locality is not only reserved for food; it’s about drinks as well. He says the Resort is collaborating with Boca Raton-based brewery Barrel of Monks Brewing to produce a 1926 Wit beer exclusively for the Resort. “It’s another way to give diners a chance to connect a little bit to the area,” he says. Another food trend Resort chefs are seeing is a movement toward healthy and environmentally friendly dining, especially plant-based dining. From 2014 to 2017, those who considered themselves vegan rose 600 percent, according to the research firm GlobalData. In addition, analytics company Nielson reported that 39 percent of people who don’t consider themselves vegan are actively trying to incorporate plant-based foods into their diets. According to a 2016 study by research group NPD Group, consumers aged 40 and under have increased their fresh vegetable intake by 52 percent over the last decade. “I actually don’t see it as a trend but more of a lifestyle,” Roenbeck says. “It’ll stick with us for quite awhile, because it’s not just about being healthy; it’s about sustainability, what are we doing to the Earth, how we’re raising cattle and what environmentally friendly decisions we as consumers can make.” Lucca’s Pile says the Italian restaurant is also not only responding and reacting to the health-conscious trend; it’s also taking strong initiatives with it. Over the years, Lucca has incorporated whole wheat and whole grain pastas into the menu. Pile says there’s also a popular dish with roasted squash, maple vinaigrette and feta. “But we could take the cheese off, and it’s vegan,” he says. In addition, Pile and his team have created glutenfree dishes for the gluten-sensitive diner. “We always try to make people happy,” he says. “We’ve sourced a great gluten-free pasta from Italy that’s an organic

BOCA RESORT’S RESTAURANTS rice flour. Most people are amazed that it has similar texture and feel as traditional pasta.” Chef Jordan Lerman of the Beach Club has also noticed diners’ interest in healthy choices, which propelled his team to incorporate more vegetableforward dishes on its menus. He also credits a rising interest in sampling global cuisines and flavors that culturally and historically are more plant-based. “I’ve seen an uptick in South Asian cuisine, like Indian food,” he says. “We recently unveiled a menu with a whole section that’s devoted to vegetables, including a popular crispy cauliflower with Vadouvan sauce, which is an Indo-French blend.” Roenbeck adds that the increasing openness and interest in ethnic foods has completely changed the restaurant landscape in South Florida. “Things that didn’t have legs five years ago are getting more acceptable,” he says. “A few years ago, it was rare to have shawarma spice in a dish in South Florida. Now, we’re seeing it more often.” Roenbeck says diners are becoming more educated about balance, realizing they don’t need to be vegans or vegetarians to incorporate a plant-based dish into their everyday diet. “For the traveler who comes to the resort on vacation, they may want to relax and eat the béarnaise and heavy creams,” he says. “But they also want to be healthier. They are realizing they can have a steak or a great pasta dish, but they are finding a greater understanding of balance, and our restaurants are providing them with those options.” v

Legends in the Making BOCA RATON HISTORICAL SOCIETY & MUSEUM

Facts and fiction are intertwined in the Resort’s long history

COLORFUL CHARACTERS, both human and animal, have built, owned and wandered the halls of the Boca Raton Resort & Club since its 1926 inception. And with so many larger-than-life figures responsible for the hotel’s growth—among them pioneering starchitect Addison Mizner and original owner Clarence Geist, not to mention the millionaires, politicians, celebrities and, for a spell, the contingent of U.S. servicemen that trained on its grounds—myths and legends were bound to take root. Some have their basis in certifiable truth; others spread with the unchecked fervor of clandestine gossip; still others were constructed out of whole cloth, just for jollies. Together, they contribute to the singular mystique that has helped make the Resort one of the most storied hotels in America.

FAVO R ITE H AUN T

Above, the Resort ca. 1927; left, Ettore Pellagatta’s “Slave Girl” statue at the Resort’s entrance

As legend has it, of all of Addison Mizner’s associates in his guest relations department during his time working on the Resort, no one was closer to the great architect than one Esmeralda. She served an audience of one—Mr. Mizner himself—and as his chambermaid of choice, she arranged the flowers in his suite, prepared hors d’oeuvres for Mizner and his guests, and fed his menagerie of exotic animals—the raccoons, macaws, monkeys and anteaters he kept around for company. Naturally, she was a looker, and was said to possess “jade green eyes enhanced by midnight-black eyelashes.” One night in 1926, after a hard day’s work, she returned home to her residence in Old Floresta, Mizner’s

staff housing development, and looked forward to a quiet night with reading materials and her favorite tea, black currant. Esmeralda eventually fell into a deep slumber in her rocking chair, not realizing she had left her stovetop on. It was a particularly breezy evening in Boca Raton. The wind blew her curtains so much that they grazed her stove, starting a conflagration that spread throughout her apartment. She was unable to escape. “History tells us that her spirit returned to being the ultimate host at the hotel and continues to be hospitable at the resort today—in her own special way,” reads a Boca Resort document about Esmeralda, provided to guests in the 1980s. It’s a compelling story of a tragic beauty taken too soon, and it even made it into a 2005 book, Florida’s Ghostly Legends and Folklore. But it’s most likely hokum, with no evidence to back up Esmeralda’s existence, or of any signs she has communicated to guests from beyond the grave. But it did help sell a guest activity: According to the same historic document, the Resort once offered a selfguided “Esmeralda’s Halloween Hunt” throughout the month of October, inviting participants to discover the places she most frequented.

U NDER T HE T US CAN S U N The iconic “slave girl” sculpture positioned in the main courtyard of the hotel has its own nifty, if wholly invented, origin myth. According to a document released by the Resort, Mizner discovered the statue in a small village in Tuscany during a scouting expedition

for unique objects d’art with which to decorate his hotel. To Mizner, the figure depicted in the sculpture was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen—and she also happened to be a likeness of the village mayor’s wife. The mayor refused to sell the statue to the eccentric architect, even after Mizner made him an offer he “couldn’t refuse.” So Mizner invited the man to his home for a drink to discuss matters further, assuming—correctly, as it turns out—that he could drink the mayor under the table. Once his quarry was sufficiently shnockered from Mizner’s potent potables, the architect literally stole off with his prize. If you believe that story, we have some swampland here in Florida that’s ripe for the taking: The sculpture was the work of famed artist Ettore Pellagatta, and was commissioned by the hotel’s owner, Clarence Geist, around 1929. Mizner likely never even saw the statue.

G O NDOLAS IN BOCA? Mizner originally had grander plans for the Boca Resort than would materialize in the form of the Cloister Inn. In 1925, he unveiled sketches for a proposed 1,000-room pleasure palace on the Boca Raton beachfront. Dubbing it Castillo Del Rey, Mizner billed it as “the world’s most complete and artistic hostelry.” The board of his development corporation consisted of a who’s-who of the era’s moneyed class, among them T. Coleman du Pont, Harold Vanderbilt, Paris Singer, Irving Berlin and opera star Frances Alda. It was to house Donald Ross-constructed golf courses, a casino, a polo field, a Venetian lake complete with gondolas, an airport, a Spanish-style village and a cabaret

Some of the Cloister Inn’s earliest guests included Charles Ritz, Clarence Darrow, Sergeant Alvin York, John Ringling and Marie Dressler. v

v

In 1945, a “comfortable” corner suite for two at the Resort went for $85 a night, and a cabana cost $75 a week.

programmed by Berlin. Architecturally, the complex would, in part, resemble a 12th century castle. The first lots of Castillo Del Ray sold for more than $2 million a piece on the first day they went on sale, though Mizner’s exorbitant Xanadu was never constructed, owing to the climate, regional overcrowding and a real estate bust—issues that were outside Mizner’s control. It wasn’t until the Resort’s beach club opened decades later that Mizner achieved his posthumous dream of a beachfront resort in Boca.

PRINT T HE L E GE N D Clarence H. Geist, a utility magnate from Philadelphia, became the owner of the Cloister Inn, later to become the Boca Resort, in 1928. It didn’t take long for rumors to spread about his actions and his demeanor, painting him as a mad tyrant. According to magazine articles by the influential Florida journalist Theodore Pratt, Geist ruled over the place “like a Russian czar.” He was said to parade around the lobby in nothing but a bathrobe, force the elevator operator to take him up to his sixth-floor residence without stopping for other passengers, and force projectionists not to start movies until he arrived, which was often extremely late. He moved around the club surrounded by machine gun-carrying guards, and changed rooms every night, for fear of being kidnapped. According to Donald Curl’s extensive history of the Resort, Mizner’s Inn, “there is no evidence that he changed from room to room,” and that “[Geist’s] nephew suggests that all these tales are part of a mythology developed to make Geist seem more interesting to Pratt’s readers.”

The presidential suite, on the 25th and 26th stories of the pink tower, opened with massive Mediterranean inlays of gold and turquoise. The Indian silk draperies in the living room were so heavy they required a onehorsepower motor to be moved. A marble staircase or private elevator connected the two floors. It cost $750 per night when it opened in 1969.

Bill Clinton gave his first speaking engagement since leaving the presidency at the Resort, earning $100,000 for it. v

v

v

When the Mizner Center opened in 1998 for conferences, one early attendee—Bill Gates—was so impressed with the facilities that he raised his stake in Boca Resorts, Inc. to two million shares.

MONKEY BUSINESS

Addison Mizner continues to be associated with the Resort’s signature pink hue, and it’s been suggested that he painted the Cloister Inn pink because it reflected “the color of the dawn.” Poetic, but false: Mizner was not especially fond of pink. He specified only one of the seven villas in his earlier Everglades Club, in Palm Beach, to be painted a low-key, pastel pink. The property’s third owners, the Schine family, are responsible for providing its rosy sheen. The color certainly caught on, and is now inextricably linked to the Resort. In 2001, in honor of the Resort’s 75th birthday, 2,000 guests donned various shades of pink, drank 45 cases of pink champagne and 20 cases of white zinfandel, and ate “Boca pink” M&Ms and a 25-foot pink wedding cake—all of it broadcast to the world on the fledgling internet.

Spider monkey Johnnie Brown was among the most prized animals in Mizner’s personal zoo. During his time at the Cloister Inn, it was common to see Mizner stride around the property with Johnnie Brown on one shoulder and a macaw on the other. Johnnie had a mischievous, outsized personality. When he wasn’t tethered in the mornings, he would shadow the milkman on his delivery route, popping the caps off the bottles and sticking his thumbs into the liquid. Apparently, Johnnie was so well known outside of Boca Raton that he was actually invited to attend the Scopes Monkey Trial: Talk about a courtroom circus! Mizner also owned pet monkeys named Ethel and Deuteronomy, but Johnnie’s legend is the sturdiest of all of Mizner’s animals: A bustling bar in neighboring Delray Beach bears his name, and his grave is in the courtyard of a pizza restaurant in Palm Beach, where his tombstone reads “Johnnie Brown/The Human Monkey/Died April 30, 1927”. But wait, there’s more: In a controversial revision of history, news recently broke that “Johnnie Brown” was, in fact, a misnomer. Mizner had actually named his monkey “Johnnie Mizner,” suggesting that the great architect really did value his simian as he would his own child. v

S O LD IE R ING O N In the early 1940s, the U.S. Air Force requisitioned the Boca Raton Club, as the Resort was then known, as part of its efforts to establish a radar training program. Club Manager Harold Turner, worried about the “army occupation” ruining the “first-class atmosphere,” tried to conserve its most expensive décor, removing the resort’s most valuable antiques, paintings, furnishings and tapestries. Some of the lavish furniture was replaced with army cots, four to a room. The precaution, perhaps, was warranted; Turner claimed some of the men dug foxholes on the golf courses. Nonetheless, though it was one of several South Florida hotels the military “commandeered” for the war, few troop barracks were considered more luxurious, and the R&R opportunities for the servicemen were second to none. Photos from the period reveal shirtless soldiers with putters, practicing their short games on the hotel lawn; and leaping into the Resort’s elegant pool, many of them fully clothed, for water training.

Real Florida is out there; you just have to find it

FROM THE SHIMMERING Miami skyline to the iconic pink tower at the Boca Resort, South Florida’s image most often revolves around beaches and fast boats, beautiful people, a culture bubbling with diversity and dreams and the drama of America’s crazy island in the sun. But this is only part of the Florida story. Miles inland, and away from the nightglow of cities, is the vast dark Everglades, a swamp adrift in islands and hardwood hammocks, cypress domes and tangled marsh prairies. It is both inhospitable and lovely, mysterious yet familiar. The northernmost remnant of the Everglades, The Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge is maybe 30 minutes from the resort and covers 221 miles of marsh prairies, hardwood hammocks, canoe trails and levees. This wild natural refuge provides habitat for millions of birds, more than 70 endangered species and thousands of native plants and animals. Guests can interact with exhibits in the Visitors Center and can also observe Loxahatchee’s year-round inhabitants such as Florida alligators during a stroll on the Cypress Boardwalk or Marsh Trail. Winter visitors might enjoy bobcat sight-

ings, early morning otter and grey fox sightings as well as hundreds of birds such as woodstorks, great blue herons, limpets, hawks, snowy egrets annd more during migratory season. The Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge is on Lee Road off U.S. 441/State Road 7, and is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day of the year. The visitor’s center is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week. Still, the Loxahatchee Refuge just brushes the edge of the Everglades experience; to get the whole picture, it’s best to travel a couple of hours south/southwest and see the country yourself. Comprised of 1.5 million acres throughout MiamiDade, Collier and Monroe counties, the park is part of the largest subtropical wilderness in the U.S., a network of wetlands and forests that supports a diversity of plant and animal species found nowhere else, including some federally listed endangered species— the Florida panther, American crocodile, West Indian manatee and turtles including the Atlantic Ridley, leatherback, green and hawksbill.

The other part of the real South Florida experience is water. With the Atlantic on one side, the Gulf of Mexico on the other, and miles of canals and streams and marshes, fishing and diving and water sports are all ways to explore the single aspect of Florida that most dramatically defines it. The Gulf Stream, flowing from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean, comes closest to our shores, bringing spectacular fish migrations with it. These include sailfish, mahi mahi and wahoo, among many other species. Reefs running parallel to shore provide habitat for hundreds of other species of marine life, attracting big deep-water fish that swim in for a meal. Area charters cater not only to experienced anglers, but also to beginners and families. “There’s no better way to ensure the future of fishing than to teach a child how to fish,” says Mike Busse, captain and owner of Reel Dusky Fishing Charters, on his website. Charter captains are happy to tailor their clients’

experiences by offering fishing, of course, as well as cruising, snorkeling and other activities. Fishing charters can be at night or day, and include deep-sea, reef and bottom fishing. These captains love their work and want to share their passion, so don’t hesitate to ask lots of questions. In addition to the proximity from shore to prime fishing grounds, South Florida offers a variety of diving and snorkeling experiences—from reefs to wrecks to right-off-the-beach. This is the way that visitors to South Florida may best understand all that Florida has to offer—like a tremendous diversity in marine life—from small, multicolored tropical fish to the Volkswagen-sized goliath grouper, as well as eels, turtles, an occasional manta ray or whale shark, and a host of invertebrates and crustaceans including the delicious Florida lobster. The Southeast Florida Reef Tract, comprised of two or three linear reefs running parallel to the beach, contribute to this biodiversity. Extending from Miami-Dade County to Palm Beach County, it’s one of the longest continuous reef structures in the Western Atlantic. Popular diving spots have nicknames often based on reef characteristics, like The Chimney, with a hole in the top of the reef big enough for two divers to swim through; English Muffin, named for the nooks and crannies that are home to invertebrates, soft corals and

Originally named the Golden Venture, the 147-foot cargo ship was used by smugglers attempting to bring 286 Chinese migrants to the United States in 1993 when it ran aground on Rockaway Beach in Queens, New York. Ten people drowned as they tried to escape the stranded ship. Later sold and renamed, the United Caribbean was used as a legitimate cargo vessel and later sold to Palm Beach County for use in its artificial reef program. • The Ancient Mariner. Commissioned in 1934 as the Coast Guard cutter Nemises, this ship chased German submarines, escorted U.S. convoys and rescued survivors from torpedoed tankers during World War II. Decommissioned in 1964, Nemises’ glory days were over. The ship changed hands many times and ultimately was bought by the South Florida Divers Club of Hollywood, which donated it to Broward County’s artificial reef program. v

Balancing Act

It’s one thing to reach physical training milestones; it’s another to achieve inner peace and a sense of holistic wellness.

THE BOCA RATON RESORT & CLUB added the concept of overall wellness to its portfolio of amenities years ago; the notion of a mind-body balance has become central to its profile. In addition to its virtues as a vacation escape, here are a few ways it is helping members and guests enrich their mental well-being in addition to their physical bodies.

front-row views of the Atlantic Ocean, Power Yoga and Yoga for the Heart, as well as Vinyasa and Restorative Yoga alternatives. Members and guests can choose among numerous classes in the Cloister and Beach Club. In addition to those, the Resort offers mind, body and soul-satisfying experiences that take wellness to the next level.

SPAAAAAA-ING

RE- CONNECT ING

The journey starts at the Waldorf Astoria Spa on the Resort’s grounds—a peaceful environment with lush, tranquil gardens, palatial architecture, quiet terraces. This sanctuary offers a menu of spa options as well as its signature KarmaVibes Candlelight Yoga in the Spa Garden, designed to stretch the body, calm the mind and soothe the soul. This mini retreat—in the context of night sky and the sweet scent of aromatherapy—offers a gentle yoga practice customized for individuals with guided meditation and healing breath work. The Resort’s wellness staff offers a variety of yoga options, including beach yoga classes that capture

Tia Crystal, a self-described healer and artist, has for many years helped Resort members and guests find inner peace through her jewelry, art and aura readings. Crystal says her jewelry helps people who wear it feel peaceful and at ease. “I’ve been an energy healer all my life,” she says. “I create that in jewelry. And when people come to me, they feel that.” Physical fitness is only part of true wellness, she says. One can live a healthy life, by eating right and exercising plenty. “But if you’re not living in a healthy way in your

mind, you’re actually not allowing yourself to create wellness in your life,” Crystal says, which “begins and ends with love.” “If you take a piece of jewelry that someone has so much passion about creating, taking time and energy and thought, you expand that love and put it out there. And that person who is in search of that is drawn to it. Like a magnet. That is what I’m dedicated to doing,” she says. Crystal also teaches at mind, body and soul retreats in France; she says she has found the mind to be the

most powerful part of the anatomy. “When you feel safe; when you feel supported; you can climb a mountain. When you feel love, there’s nothing that will hold you back,” she says. Crystal helps people achieve that inner growth through intuitive aura readings—which focus on the present, as opposed to the past or future, and encourage the mind and heart to connect. This can ease the path for people working their way through trauma, stress or sadness. “I can help you awaken what’s within you because you are that powerful,” she says. “If you don’t get to the core essence of the trauma that you’ve experienced, everything else becomes the icing on the cake no matter what you do. You can do yoga or juicing or meditation. But if you don’t get into a place of releasing the trauma and the anger and the blame and the guilt, you’ll be on a merry-go-round that never will stop,” Crystal says. “That’s the work I love to do—to help you believe in the possibilities of a brighter way.”

CELEBRITY COACHING FROM THE CELEBRITIES THEMSELVES Former professional basketball player, Nike Master Trainer and celebrity trainer and author Holly Rilinger was searching for the optimal training method for her own life when she developed her signature workout LIFTED. “It combines meditation with movement—typically high-intensity interval training. It brings together two seemingly different parts of wellness for a holistic ap-

proach to wellness in a one-hour class,” says Rilinger, who was featured on a Bravo reality series and is filming a television fitness-themed pilot for ABC. Rilinger travels from her home in New York City to the Resort during the year to teach LIFTED to guests and members of the world-class property. As an athlete, Rilinger learned mental and physical preparation for a game go hand-in-hand. The same is true in everyday life, she says. “If I’m physically fit and not mentally fit or I don’t have a peaceful, sound mind, I’m not going to have an optimal experience in life. I’m not going to be well-rounded. I’m not going to feel balanced,” she says. “So … that’s the way LIFTED was born.” Rilinger authored the book LIFTED, a 28-day approach to wellness through mind, body and spirit. The book, she says, is an extension of the LIFTED class and addresses nutrition and goal setting, an introduction to meditation and a 28-day workout plan.

THE ORANGE ZONE, RESORT STYLE Boca Beach Club is home to the world’s first Orangetheory pop-up. Kevin Keith, chief brand officer at Boca Raton-based Orangetheory Fitness, says opening the resort facility started as an experiment for the worldwide brand and has proven to be a winning combination for Resort members and guests. Orangetheory’s members have said they want Orangetheory to be where they are—including when they go on vacations. Boca Beach Club, in the Orangetheory global headquarters’ “backyard,” seemed the perfect place for an elevated Orangetheory experience. “[Resort members and guests] experience our very latest in technology and innovation in that studio. We actually put OTConnect fitness technology in that studio before we had it in many of our other studios,” Keith says. The setting itself is extraordinary. And the Orangetheory pop-up is a draw for some of the brand’s best coaches, who do their residencies at the Resort, according to Keith. “So, it’s different, but still the very core is the same Orangetheory workout you get anywhere in the world,” he says. Orangetheory is a one-hour coach-inspired group workout based on high-intensity interval training principles and science, Keith says. The science is this: The Orange Zone is 84 percent to 91 percent of one’s maximum heart rate. “If you can do that from 12 to 20 minutes in a onehour period, it produces what we call the EPOC, excess post-exercise oxygen consumption, effect,” Keith

says. The EPOC effect lasts long after the workout by burning extra calories and boosting metabolism. Genesis Martinez, lead resident coach of the Resort’s Orangetheory studio, says Orangetheory’s purpose is to help people live a longer, more vibrant life. “I channel that every day I step into the Resort’s Orangetheory studio to coach members and resort guests. I try to show them that the 60 minutes they are working with me in class will give them more energy, more drive, more health to do the things they love outside of the studio during the other 23 hours of their day,” Martinez says. “The classes are always packed with encouragement, motivation and a ton of fun!” v

Crystal Clear

Glitz, spirituality and rebellion coexist in Metis Atash’s sparkling sculptures

AT FIRST BLUSH, Metis Atash’s career appears to have swung from one end of the spectrum to the other. She forged her career in finance, working in private equity for 15 years, mostly in her native Germany. It was exhausting, right-brain labor—consulting, preparing documents, filing annual reports—and it consumed her for up to 80 hours a week. While traveling during a yearlong sabbatical from her job in 2004, Atash experienced something like an epiphany. “I stayed six months in Bali and met my business partner,” she recalls. “We became friends, not really thinking much, just realizing there was more to my life than what I’ve lived.” Her future business partner was a furniture exporter, and Atash began to create art on his inventory, applying paint, lacquer and Swarovski crystals. Around the same time, Atash, a practicing Buddhist, imported Balinese Buddha heads, and painted and crystallized those as well. These formative experiments became the preamble to Atash’s signature series, the PunkBuddha, which she developed in 2013 from an 18-inch clay Buddha mold she designed. She painted the sculpture in various colors, created a yin/yang symbol on its back, then applied a layer of more than 20,000 individual Swarovski crystals. Lastly, she added “spikes” to its head, simulating a mohawk haircut—the “punk” part of the PunkBuddha. For Atash, crystals have spiritual resonance, representing light and self-reflection. They are also attentiongrabbers, gleaming from across a crowded gallery, and within a month she sold her first three PunkBuddhas. Today, she runs a motley production line of PunkBuddhas, which now come in six sizes, and she has expanded it to include painted, crystallized elephants,

skulls and Buddhist deities as well. With a team of 22 artisans in New York and 10 at her Miami studio, Atash produces 450 pieces a year, each one handpainted and emblazoned with art-historical tributes— she pays homage to artists from Seurat to Warhol to Banksy on the Buddhas’ backs—or spiritual symbolism or fashion references. At Art Miami in December 2019, she’ll debut her largest PunkBuddha yet, a 6-foot giant studded with half a million crystals.

Atash, whose sculptures are on display at the Beach Club as well as the Sponder Gallery in the Boca Resort’s Cloister lobby, may have transitioned into a full-time artist, but as she explains to Mizner’s Dream, lessons from her corporate life are still paying off: the business yin to her creative yang. How does punk rock influence your work? I used to be punk rock when I was a teenager. Every generation has its own music direction, its own vibe, and for me it was punk rock in the early ‘90s. That’s what I grew up with—Misfits, Sex Pistols, Ramones. The PunkBuddha is the freedom seeker, the rebel part, the one that wants to believe in everything that is pure and good and grounded, but at the same time is his own rebellious, selfish little person that believes it’s important for oneself to be happy first before we can make other people happy. At first glance, the punk movement and Buddhism seem like opposites, but it sounds like you’re tapping into connections between them. Punk rock for me has a lot to do with going against society. Does this imply that there’s a freedom-seeking, rebellious standing for what I believe? I would say so, but it’s always

peaceful. Punk rock is not a music that ever claimed for violence or for war. It was always a get-together, and a celebration. I think it goes exactly into what Buddhism is about now. I think the misconception about Buddhism is that it’s a religion, and everything that is religious ought to be within a structure, within the conservative view. But when you study Buddhism and when you go on this path and meet true Buddhists that have embraced that way of living their whole life, then you realize there are no rules, there is no judgment, there is no living in the past. There is just the moment, and it’s the joy and the happiness. I don’t see anything that would go against the punk rock movement. With so many assistants working under you, what do you still do in terms of the hands-on creation of your work? I design the molds. The first step is always the clay mold. Once it goes into production, it’s being taken over by other hands. Then the pieces arrive, and I paint everything, together with two assistants here. Every piece is hand-painted. I taught everybody how to do the crystallization, but they do 90 percent of it. At the end of the day it’s me, myself and I. If I have to survive on my own again, I’ll do everything on my own. If for some reason the world changes into a direction where the luxury business is not that successful anymore, and I only sell two Buddhas a month, then I will be able to do these two Buddhas myself. They must be expensive to produce, given that each of them has tens of thousands of Swarovski crystals. They are. People and galleries often forget that when you deal with sculptures, you deal with somebody who has put a lot of money into their

118

|

MIZNER’S DREAM

11/14/19 3:28 PM

creations before a cent is turned over. It’s not like a photographer that takes a picture, the piece is done, and you give it to the framer. The process of creation, and the time you invest in it—and time is money, at the end of the day—is expensive, but what benefits me is that I come from a finance world. I know how these companies are structured, and I know what I have to do in order to bring an idea to a business. That helped me in the development more than anything. Yes, you have to be creative, and always push the envelope, and come up with something that has not been done. But at the same time, if the process is not in place, if the right people are not in place, if it doesn’t come together based on steps that are defined in order to grow a business, then it is not sustainable. You pay homage to Warhol in some of your sculptures. Can we read a Warhol influence in the production of the Punkbuddha series, given that the Buddhas begin with an identical base, like a lot of Warhol’s silkscreens began with an identical image, and then differentiate themselves from there? Once I started painting Warhol, I realized what a genius he was. I don’t think when people see the cans, the portraits, the flowers, they see what he has created and revolutionized. Basquiat is very in right now, but street art in general has a huge influence as well, but Warhol in himself is the most unique Pop artist. Do your works comment on things like materialism and branding? As far as materialism goes, I believe money is just energy. To some people it might sound arrogant, but I never paid attention to money. I never had a longing for money. But money was always there, because I always worked, and always believed that what I wanted I could have, because I believe in the power of thoughts, and the law of attraction. Money does not have the meaning that most people would think when they see the pieces. It’s about being able to look within the material world, and enjoy the material world without becoming dependent on the material world.

S C U L PT U RE TO U RS A N D M O R E In addition to visiting Sponder Gallery in the Resort lobby,

guests and members can enjoy a self-guided sculpture tour, where works by artists including Manolo Valdes, Boaz Vaadia, Bernar Venet, Mauro Perucchetti, Ernest Trova and others tower like

sentinels throughout the property. These tours are supplemented

with a text panel at each sculpture, and guided tours are available by appointment for collectors.

For still more artistic nourishment, Resort guests are invited to

visit Sponder Gallery’s flagship location at 413 E. Palmetto Park

Road—walking distance from the main Resort. As an extension of its exhibition program, Sponder Gallery participates in major art

fairs throughout the country. For complimentary VIP passes, email info@spondergallery.com or call 561/350-0004.

about. You can look at everything through two lenses—happy/sad, good/bad, ugliness/beauty. It’s all about the feeling. So is there value if someone wants to buy your work just because it will look pretty on a shelf? Here’s the thing with the law of attraction. It says to maneuver your thoughts into whatever makes you happy, because happy attracts happy attracts happy. It’s cause and effect. If you buy a Buddha, and this Buddha makes you smile, or makes you feel that you achieved something in life, or you like it as a totem that stands for something else, that’s wonderful. Whatever the reason is for them is good for me. v

You could look at the sculptures through two different lenses. The crystals have spiritual resonance for you, but for some people, they can just be bling. It ties into everything we do in life. It’s a matter of perspective. You can decide to go with the left end of the stick or the right end of the stick. That’s what life is

EVENTS

The Concours This highly anticipated automotive event returns again to the Boca Resort

THE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED 14th-annual Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance, presented by Mercedes-Benz and AutoNation, is back again at the Resort this year. on February 7-9, 2020. The headliner will be comedian Billy Gardell, and auto enthusiasts will celebrate with Marque of the Year, the Duesenberg Straight Eight Model A, on its 100-year anniversary. The Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance is the world’s largest Concours owned by a charity, founded and directed by Rita and Rick Case of The Rick Case Automotive Group and fully benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County. The Boys & Girls Club serves more than 12,300 at-risk youth.

Rick and Rita Case have been devoted to this organization for years; in fact, this year they were honored for this work and all their charitable endeavors with the Legends of Auto Award sponsored by Auto News, which celebrated the award’s 10-year anniversary at the Legends of Auto Gala during Monterey Week and the 69th-annual Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance. This year’s Boca Concours is just an extension of their longtime commitment to the Boys & Girls Clubs and their charitable work throughout South Florida. “The Concours team is comprised of more than 300 volunteers who donate their time to the planning and execution of the event,” says Brian Quail, President/

The excitement continues on Saturday with the Grand Gala Dinner, Live Auction & Show. Prior to dinner, guests enjoy a cocktail reception and have the opportunity to bid on a unique array of items at the silent auction. Immediately following the cocktail reception, guests are served a gourmet dinner during which they have the chance to bid on one-of-a-kind trips and exotic vacation packages. The evening’s grand finale features a stellar performance by top comedian Billy Gardell, who played Chicago police officer Mike Biggs on “Mike & Molly.” He also had a recurring role as Billy Colivida on “Yes, Dear” and appeared

in a dozen episodes of “My Name Is Earl” as a police officer, among other roles. The gala will also feature the induction of Colin Brown, Chairman of the Board of JM Family Enterprises, into the Dream Makers Society—honoring individuals who have established a long-term commitment to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County for at least 10 years with a significant impact on the success of the organization, including more than $1 million in contributed funds. The “official automotive artist” of the Boca Concours event and founder of the Automotive Fine Arts Society is Ken Eberts, a car artist whose work has been exhibited throughout the United States. Through his artwork he communicates the history, excitement, aesthetics, nostalgia and his love of automobiles, in a way that can be understood and appreciated by car and art enthusiasts alike. His paintings are often recognizable for the wealth of architectural details in their settings. Eberts began his career as a car designer for Ford Motor Company.
