ASSET & LAWSUIT PROTECTION 8 Ways to Protect Everything You Own – From Everyone, Every Time! Hillel L. Presser, Esq., MBA Lawsuits have become big business, especially since the economic downturn. They’re a cheap way for people to make lots of money, often with an investment of just a few hours’ time. Consider -- a plaintiff may never even have to prove a thing; the prospect of spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal bills can scare a defendant into opting for a settlement without ever putting up a fight. Even if he did nothing wrong. More than 100 million lawsuits are filed each year; one in three people will be sued in the next 12 months. No one’s immune, but people with a lot of assets showing are especially vulnerable. If someone thinks you’ve got a lot to lose – and thus, they’ve got a lot to gain – you become a choice target. People who are less affluent are vulnerable in a different way: If a person with $100,000 in assets gets sued for $1 million, they’ll be wiped out, whereas the person with $5 million can survive a $1 million lawsuit. The time to protect your assets is before you get sued; it’s much more enforceable, costs less and you’ll have more options available. Here are some tips to help guide you: 1. Inventory your wealth. Most people have a lot more than they think. Take stock of valuable domain names, telephone numbers, intellectual property, potential inheritances, and other liquid and non-liquid assets. 2. Convert non-exempt assets into exempt assets. State laws protect some personal assets from lawsuits and creditors. Those assets typically include your primary residence; personal items such as furniture and clothing; pensions and retirement funds; and life insurance. Find out the exemptions for your state and convert non-exempt assets (i.e. cash) into exempt assets (i.e. life insurance). 3. Don’t rely solely on liability insurance. Buy as much insurance as you can; it’s cheap and it helps you sleep at night. But realize that 70 percent of claims are not covered. Your coverage may be inadequate for a particular suit; your insurance company may go bankrupt. Having insurance and an asset protection plan is the belt and suspenders approach to hanging onto your pants. 4. Don’t title your assets solely to your spouse or to “straw men.” They may have more financial problems than you. 5. Protect your assets with liens. What is a $100,000 car worth if you owe $95,000? What is a $1 million house worth if you owe $950,000? Take out lines of credit. Record mortgages against your property. Make all of your assets valueless. Become an unattractive candidate for a lawsuit. 6. Transfer your assets to a protective entity. The key to asset protection is to own nothing while controlling everything. Transfer any nonexempt assets out of your name to protective entities such as trusts, LLC’s (limited liability companies), limited partnerships, etc. 7. Utilize international asset protection. Enjoy an even greater degree of privacy and debtor protection with the many additional legal and procedural obstacles that creditors have to face in international jurisdictions. 8. Keep your plan up to date. Laws change every year. Have your plan reviewed yearly. Dressing the part

 Real shoes may only be worn Monday through Friday; flip-flops will be your new footwear. They even make a version that has its own built-in bottle opener, which none of us finds unusual.  haTs and sunglasses are now mandatory, and in addition to the standard beach accessories, we recommend a handy battery-operated blender.  you may neveR have to park your own car again. From the mall to the movies, valet parking is everywhere in Boca Raton, even when there is ample garage space and parking lots right around the corner.  ocTobeR 15 will become your version of Bastille Day, Cinco de Mayo and Fourth of July. That is when stone crab season officially starts; you will partake of the food of the gods all winter long.  you will leaRn that summer in Boca means turtles, and instead of watching Leno, you will find yourself on a turtle walk to spot nesting loggerheads.  you will need a biggeR house. Moving to Boca Raton automatically comes with the baggage of additional company—all year long. Once they find out you have moved here, get ready; you will never be lonely again.

You’ve planned your vacation activities and experiences down to a T. Now comes the important question: What are you going to wear? Luckily, the Boca Raton Resort & Club has your every wardrobe whim covered. Check out the Logo, Golf and Tennis shops for all of your active wear needs. With brands like Nike, Polo/Ralph Lauren, Bugatchi and Burberry, you’ll look great, no matter what the activity. Spending the day at the beach or by the pool? Then stop by Boca Breeze and the Resort Shop. With ladies’ apparel, swimwear for women and children and top-of-the-line handbags, sunglasses, and accessories, a trip to either of these stores will leave you looking like a Florida native. What about dressing for a special day or evening? Just take a trip to Alene Too; the Resort’s only boutique is equipped with designer fashions and all of the trendy tools needed to leave you looking fabulous.

What a racket

The tennis pros at the Resort not only have your back(hand), but they can also help you commission a tennis racket that is custom-made for you—and your game. Because every tennis player is unique, with his or her own specific abilities and techniques, it makes sense to use a racket that maximizes strengths. Rackets are designed based on varying frame lengths and stiffness, handle shapes and sizes, weight and balance. The Vantagedesigned rackets start at $220—let our tennis pros get you started.

Boca Raton Resort & Club: HistoRiCal timeline 1926:

On Feb. 6, the Cloister Inn, modeled by architect Addison Mizner after a Spanish castle, opens as the most expensive 100-room hotel of its day at $1.25 million.

1928: The inn is pur-

chased by Philadelphia utility magnate Clarence Geist and expands to include more guest rooms, the former Cabana Club and a new golf course.

1930: The Cloister Inn

reopens after $8 million in renovations as the Boca Raton Club and is run as a private club open seasonally from January to March until Geist’s death in 1938.

1940:

U.S. Army Air Corps trainees occupy the Resort during World War II, remaining for four years and terming the property “the most elegant barracks in history.”

1944:

Real estate and theater entrepreneur J. Myer Schine buys the club for a paltry $3 million and reopens it as the Boca Raton Hotel and Club.

New at the beach So much for the simple reclining lawn chair and cheap mystery novel. The Beach Club offers year-round diversions, from walking on water to dreamy massages. Discover how life is a beach at the Resort this year. Try the Cabana Massage from Spa Palazzo’s new poolside spa services, available in the privacy of your own cabana. Guests can choose from the chair (15 minutes), Swedish (50 minutes or 80 minutes) or deep-tissue (50 minutes or 80 minutes) massages. Go fly a kite with tips from Randy Lowe, the Boca Beach Club’s kite concierge (weekends, 3 p.m., weather permitting). Get some wheels with a Beach Cruiser, available to rent from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The rates are $15 per bike

per hour, $45 for a half-day (four hours) or $75 for a full day (eight hours). Kids of all ages can enjoy “Walking on Water” in the exciting air-filled water balls at the Cabana Pool (weekends, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.). Have a little cold something from the shaved ice cart, with 50 flavors for adults, including alcohol and gummy bears and other fun toppings—plus the Chocolate Monkey for kids. Guests also can opt for TCBY yogurt with a choice of 24 toppings at Snack. On holiday weekends, discover down-to earth sculptures by Pat Harsch, a top competitive sand sculptor from Team SandTastic. And all you have to do is watch from the comfort of your oh-so-comfy beach chair.

Make your own ice cream sandwich Sometimes doing it yourself is the best way to get it done right—and nowhere is that more true than when it comes to dessert. Serendipity now lets guests make their own ice cream sandwiches starting with a scoop of your favorite ice cream—vanilla, chocolate, cookie dough, strawberry, mint chocolate chip or coffee—to squish between your choice of cookie. And we mean real cookies: chocolate chip, double chocolate chip, sprinkled sugar or oatmeal raisin. Then you get to drizzle the whole thing with any or all of the following: chocolate syrup, caramel, strawberry, raspberry, marshmallow and butterscotch. Who needs lunch with a dessert like that?

1956: On March 1, 1956, 1969: Arvida begins Arthur Vining Davis, former Alcoa CEO, buys the property for $22.5 million. Davis later forms his namesake company, Arvida Corp., which owns and operates the hotel for 27 years.

54

mizner’s dream

a $14 million expansion program, including the 27-story tower and golf villas. In addition, a conference center gives the hotel a balance of leisure and business.

1980: The Boca Beach

Club replaces the old Cabana Club, a $20 million addition with 214 rooms, eight suites, a half-mile of private Atlantic beach and two restaurants.

The Ultimate Golfing Tradition

For almost 80 years, golfers from around the world have been coming here to play a course that was once the domain of golf legends like Tommy Armour and Sam Snead. Opened in 1926, the majestic 6,253-yard, par-71 course has legendary holes and eye-catching beauty. There are few holes anywhere like the Resort’s 13th, where a waterfall serves as the backdrop for tees and a stream winds its way toward the challenging green. Also available to hotel guests and club members is the new Golf Fitness program, intended to assist golfers looking to lower their handicap and improve their game. For information about Golf Fitness and more, call 800/833-7370.

1983: The Boca Raton

Hotel and Club is sold to the Boca Raton Hotel & Club Limited Partnership and VMS Realty Corp.

1988: The property

becomes the Boca Raton Resort & Club and acquires the Boca Country Club, featuring an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, a fitness center and dining facilities.

Monkey Man

DID you knoW?  Florida has more golf courses than any other state in the country.  Palm Beach County has the most golf courses of any county in the state of Florida.  Boca’s original town hall, the F.E.C. railroad and two streamline rail cars are on the National Register of Historic Places.

Addison Mizner is the iconic architect of Boca Raton and Palm Beach, and it is his vision that defined the Boca Raton Resort & Club in the early years of the Florida land boom. Aside from his legendary architecture, Addison Mizner is also known for his love of exotic pets, specifically a spider monkey named Johnnie Brown. Legend has it that Mizner—clad in silk pajamas, with Johnnie Brown on one shoulder and a macaw or a toucan on the other—would wake the hotel’s chef late at night for a midnight snack he invented, the “Bocaroon”—a chocolate, orange and coconut macaroon. Mizner ate the chocolate himself, gave the monkey the orange and shared the coconut with his bird. Today, Johnnie Brown is buried in Palm Beach—one of only two graves on the island. He was laid to rest in the courtyard of Via Mizner, Addison Mizner’s self-styled home off Worth Avenue. His epitaph reads: “Johnnie Brown, the human monkey.”

1991: The Boca

Raton Resort & Club undergoes an $11 million renovation, bringing the total refurbishing expenditures to $55 million since 1983.

 No matter where you are in Florida, you’re never more than 65 miles from the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico.  Palm Beach County is Florida’s largest county, at 2,578 square miles— bigger than Rhode Island or Delaware.  The largest lake in Florida is Lake Okeechobee, about an hour north of Boca Raton.

 In 1987 the Florida legislature designated the American alligator the official state reptile. The alligator originally symbolized Florida’s extensive untamed wilderness and swamps.  The Count de Hoernle Amphitheater in Boca’s Mizner Park, a state-of-the-art outdoor amphitheater, has entertained more than 1 million people over the past 10 years.

Boca takes date night to new heights

This year’s opening of iPic Theaters at Mizner Park officially makes Boca South Florida’s epicenter for cinematic comfort. Premier Club at Cinemark Palace and Living Room Theaters already offer in-theater dining, but iPic steps it up a notch with reclining seats, large but intimate movie theaters, pillows and blankets, an in-house gourmet restaurant and the ambience of a luxury hotel. Boca knows how to do the movies.

1993: The Boca Raton

Management Company replaces VMS Realty Corp. as the general partner for the Boca Raton Hotel & Club Limited Partnership.

1996:

Guest rooms in the Cloister and Tower undergo renovation, and a $10 million tennis and fitness center opens as construction begins on Mizner Center, a $40 million meeting facility.

1997: H. Wayne Huiz-

enga and Florida Panther Holdings Inc., now Boca Resorts Inc., purchases the resort for $325 million, and Gene Bates completes a $6.5 million redesign of the Resort Golf Course.

1998: Mizner Center

opens as a comprehensive meeting and conference facility, featuring four unique ballrooms and 80,000 square feet of flexible function space.

New at Camp BoCa:

Dr. Seuss comes to the Resort

The Boca Beach Club refuses to grow up. In fact, it has partnered with Random House Children’s Books to create a Random House kids’ library for guests at the hotel’s Camp Boca. The custom-made, Dr. Seuss-inspired library officially launched last summer with more than 100 titles, including books from the Dr. Seuss and Stepping Stones collections and other souvenirs. The books cater to kids ages 3 to 12. Families also can borrow these books at no cost during their stay at the Resort. The Boca Beach Club also will introduce a “Story Time Corner” hosted by its team of experienced and animated Camp Boca counselors, dressed in popular character accessories. Boca Beach Club will also feature appearances by Random House authors, as well as additional character appearances from the famed Dr. Seuss collection. “We’re honored to partner with Random House to introduce such an exciting new program for our guests,” said Sean Clancy, general manager of Boca Beach Club. “The library and character appearances will become a new centerpiece for families at the Resort this year.” Camp Boca at Boca Beach Club is a year-round, supervised daily service and recreational program for hotel guests geared to three distinct age groups: Boca Tots (ages 3-5), Boca Bunch (ages 6-8) and Boca Beach Combers (ages 9-12). It is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with half-day and full-day sessions available for guests. Along with structured age-specific programming, Camp Boca offers junior golf and tennis clinics, sand castle building, kite flying on the beach, beach volleyball, fishing on the docks, croquet, culinary creations and piñata parties, plus water sports, winter bonfires and s’mores.

T

here are many ways to dine out on the world’s great cuisines. You could travel country to country, sampling as you go. But that means airlines. Airports. Security. Fees. Delays. Stress. You could go to any big city and hit one restaurant after another. But that means traffic. Traffic jams. Parking. Reservations. Hassles. More stress. You could spend thousands of dollars on cooking classes and ingredients and equipment and prepare your meals yourself. But that means, well, thousands of dollars. And time, effort, travel, scorched pots. Big messes. More hassles. Even more stress. Or you could sit 24 floors up enjoying spectacular city and ocean views, looking out onto a pristine beach or verdant, manicured golf course, relaxing in the rustic-elegant setting that calls to mind a Tuscan ristorante or reveling in the exquisite creations of one of the world’s most innovative and celebrated chefs. No airlines, no airports. No traffic jams. No hassles. No stress. Just great food and fine wine from the world over. Which of those sounds better to you? At the Boca Raton Resort & Club you’ll find restaurants from cutting-edge contemporary to casual and comforting, serving cuisine inspired by the best of Italy, Japan, Latin America, the Caribbean and our own modern and traditional cookery, all within a short walk or a few minutes’ drive.

LuCCa The flavors of Italy, from Campania to Tuscany to Lombardy, traditional and with a few contemporary tweaks of his own, are all colors on chef Adam Pile’s culinary palette. The 33-year-old chef of Lucca revels in the pure, elemental beauty of Italian cuisine. “It’s not too flashy,” he says. “It’s simple, using what’s on hand, seasonal.” Though Italian by choice rather than heritage, he says growing up in western Pennsylvania gave him an inadvertent peek into the very essence of Italian cuisine. “My parents instilled [in me] a love and respect for food. We raised animals, we had a vegetable garden, fruit

dish trees, picked wild berries. At the time I didn’t know it but we were practicing what is now a huge food trend in farm-to-table and seasonality.” To that end he serves up a classic caprese salad with heirloom tomatoes, house-made mozzarella and 12-year-old balsamic vinegar; veal osso buco—a Milanese specialty—with risotto infused with saffron and bone marrow; and an inventive play on traditional piccata, with plump scallops substituting for veal in a lemon-sage brown butter tweaked with capers and sultanas. And it’s not just Pile’s cooking that reflects essential Italian sensibilities, it’s the restaurant itself. From its warm, soothing earth tones and softly burnished dark wood to the open kitchen framed by hanging pots and pans beneath a huge, vibrantly colorful mural, it renders flash a mere spectator to the timelessness of Italian cuisine.

Cielo

If the dictionary illustrated the world “multicultural,” it would probably be with a photograph of Nader Jaouhar. The chef de cuisine of Cielo, the view-rich restaurant on the 27th floor of The Tower, was born in Senegal to a Lebanese mother and French father, grew up mostly in Paris, then moved to the U.S. at age 21, where he worked at such notable South Florida restaurants as Sunfish Grill and Pascal Oudin’s Pascal’s on Ponce. That background helps make Cielo’s coastal Mediterranean cuisine truly representative of all the countries around the Mediterranean Sea, not just Italy with occasional nods at Greece. The pungent seasonings of Morocco, Turkey, Syria, West Africa and more bring their exciting, exhilarating presence to Jaouhar’s dishes, leavened by the chef’s careful sense of balance and almost surgical classic French technique. “The food we do is fun and innovative,” he says. “It’s my personal interpretation of traditional and classic dishes.” His take on branzino, for example, the hugely popular Mediterranean sea bass, was inspired by a traditional Moroccan dish, except “lightened and brightened” to give it a more contemporary edge and expose diners to the quintessentially Moroccan flavors of saffron, preserved lemon and chermoula (an olive oil-bound paste of herbs, spices and lemon). It’s dishes like that—“simple but with complex technique behind them”— which define the chef’s culinary philosophy. Although Cielo may be flying high, 27 floors up, its food is very well grounded. “Cooking,” Jaouhar says, “doesn’t have to be fancy.”

MoriMoto Heading up the kitchen at a restaurant with Masaharu Morimoto’s name over the door is like building a sports car for Enzo Ferrari or stitching a suit for Giorgio Armani. That Takao Soejima has held that position since Morimoto opened in the Resort some four years ago is a testament to his skill and ability to live up to the Iron Chef’s exacting standards. Soejima’s culinary education began at his mother’s side at age 8, preparing rice and miso soup. After leaving his native Japan, he worked in sushi restaurants in Florida and California before taking a job at Morimoto’s Philadelphia restaurant, where he earned the title of head sushi chef. At Morimoto here, as at all the Iron Chef’s restaurants, there’s no compromising the rigorous Japanese culinary aesthetic, which Soejima sums up as, “If it’s not perfect, it does not go out.” That perfection comes at a price of both time and money. “Our seaweed is top-of-the-brand Morimoto original roast,” he says. “It costs four or five times more than the one used by ordinary sushi places.” Soy sauce is carefully calibrated to match Morimoto’s pristinely fresh fish, most of which is flown in from Japan twice weekly. Of one of Soejima’s original dishes, crispy Kobe-style minced beef, he says, “My cook is crying because it takes so much prep time. But even Chef Morimoto was pleased. Trust me, it is so hard to make an Iron Chef say, ‘Umai’ (‘It is tasty’).”

501 East A self-described “working class kind of guy” with skills honed at the nation’s finest culinary school and a half-dozen different positions at the Resort, John Rudolph could hardly be a better choice to be in charge of the kitchen at 501 East Kitchen & Bar, where all-American cookery gets buffed to a high shine and paired not just with a roster of boutique domestic wines, but a selection of craft beers. For Rudolph, who studied at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park before fleeing the brutal winters of western New York for the balmier climes of South Florida, it’s all about “letting the food speak for itself.” So his Kobe burger with wild mushrooms and truffle aioli says blue jeans luxury with a kick in the seat from horseradish-inflamed cheddar, and the restaurant’s most popular dish, red wine-braised short rib with “killer mac-n-cheese,” says forktender beef with rich, creamy, cheesy pasta “just can’t be beat.” The Resort’s resident beer expert, Rudolph says his wine appreciation classes at CIA actually gave him a “keener taste for beer.” Wine is a bit “too hoity-toity” for this “not hoity-toity” chef, who loves beer’s ability to play well with “almost any type of food,” like fruit cobbler with a lusty chocolate stout, the kind of thing he hopes to show off to diners with a special beer-food dinner. Which, of course, would be neither hoity nor toity.

SeaGrille

Chefs Donna Wynter and Isaias Pardon; SeaGrille’s shrimp potstickers

AAron Bristol

You can trace the background and experience of Donna Wynter through her menu. The executive chef of the Beach Club’s seafood-oriented SeaGrille was born in Jamaica, earned a culinary degree in New York City, studied Thai cuisine in Bangkok, French cuisine in Paris, Chinese cuisine in Beijing and spent years immersed in the Latin-influenced food scene in Miami. So on the menu of the stylish yet comfortable restaurant overlooking the Atlantic Ocean you might find Bahamian-style conch chowder or shrimp potstickers with plum dipping sauce, pan-seared grouper with lobster butter sauce or Caribbean fish tacos, miso-glazed black cod baked in a banana leaf and filet mignon with housemade steak sauce. Her mantra about the caliber of the fish and shellfish that make up the almost two-dozen species on her weekly changing menu is simple and direct: “Whatever is local and fresh. We make sure we get the best quality.” Her conviction on how those species should be prepared is equally succinct: “We don’t do heavy sauces and complicate the dish. We try to be very light and fresh.” It’s an approach that’s proved popular with SeaGrille’s diners, just as it has with the celebrities she’s cooked for over her career, heavy hitters with names like Bill Clinton, Margaret Thatcher, Martin Short, Robert Redford, Bill Cosby, Will Smith and Bill Murray, the last of whom she calls “a true gentleman.” You might not agree with their politics or enjoy their movies, but you have to admire their taste.

Serendipity

AAron Bristol

Walk through the Resort’s lobby, make a quick turn and you’re standing in the middle of a cool, sweet taste of gastronomic Americana. It’s Serendipity, the South Florida outpost of the Big Apple boutique of the same name, pleasing sweet teeth young and old for more than 60 years. Founded for $300 by a trio of New Yorkers and named after a word coined by English writer Sir Horace Walpole about three mythical Sri Lankan princes, it’s attracted everyone from big-eyed tourists to big-name celebrities. Andy Warhol used to pay his tab with drawings. Marilyn Monroe was a frequent visitor, as was Jackie Onassis. It was even the inspiration for the 2001 movie “Serendipity,” starring Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack. The Resort’s Serendipity pays homage to its New York parent with its profusion of Tiffany lamps, marble-topped tables and whimsical decor, not to mention its signature Frrrozen Hot Chocolate, everyone’s favorite cold weather restorative reborn as a cool, creamy antidote to summer. The other signature of Serendipity pastry chef Jean Spielmann and crew is the Golden Opulence sundae, an extravagant mélange of 50 scoops of ice cream with a handmade chocolate spire, imported chocolate truffles and 24-karat gold leaf, with an equally extravagant $1,000 price tag. There’s more than just sweet stuff: soups and salads, sandwiches and burgers, and a foot-long New York hot dog. But if your sweet tooth starts to tingle as you walk past, well ... just call it serendipity.

ver the years, the Boca Raton Resort & Club has seen its share of over-the-top weddings, from events with endless guest lists and elaborate details to lavish multicourse feasts and custom add-ons. But, recently, the Resort hosted a wedding that truly raised the bar when it comes to exotic. Bride and groom Ruchi Gupta and Manish Kumar wanted to stay true to their roots with a traditional Indian wedding. Ruchi (a Boca resident working with a startup company) and Manish (a Colorado-born foreign service officer for the United States Agency for International Development) turned to the bride’s family for guidance and inspiration, especially since two of her sisters had married in South Florida within the last five years. Then, working with wedding expert and catering sales manager Jillian Stevens—as well as the Resort’s stellar team of wedding specialists—the

couple planned out the 150-person event to the last detail, honoring Indian wedding customs wherever possible. “In the Waldorf fashion of service, the Resort allows the bride to keep true to her heritage and tradition while experiencing the grandeur of the Boca Raton Resort & Club,” says Stevens, who has hosted events for the likes of Matt Damon, Richard Gere, former president Bill Clinton and the president of Ireland. On a balmy day in June, the elaborate event began with the baraat, during which the groom—riding a mare, no less—and his family proceeded to the venue, the historic Cathedral Ballroom in the Cloisters, one of the property’s most popular locations. Once the two families met, the milni took place, where the bride was formally presented to the groom. The Cathedral Ballroom was the perfect backdrop for the ceremony (typically lasting two to three hours in Indian culture), which was held

2013 Wedding Trends

Wedding specialist Jillian stevens sounds off on what’s hot—and what’s not—in weddings today. “What’s fashionable is the opulence of the Gatsby era—the Roaring ’20s.” Think flapper dresses, jazz bands, mint juleps and Studebakers, she says. “Gone are the days of ’60s ‘Mad Men’ style and vintage ‘do it yourself’ country styles.” “Although DIY projects are still popular, the new trend is to include homestyle-type elements to the special day,” she says. Examples include food trucks for late-night snacks, individual cobbler desserts in ramekins, mismatched vintage china and gospel or high school choir performances.

under a mandap, a structure comprising four pillars and a canopy, followed by a two-hour cocktail reception. While Ruchi and Manish changed outfits (the bride modified her hair and makeup, too), guests enjoyed a two-hour cocktail reception, featuring traditional vegetarian Indian cuisine, in the nearby Palm Court. Next, the reception, held in the Cathedral Ballroom, included the traditional introductions of the bride and groom and their families, as well as the first dance and toasts. Famous Indian comedian Rajiv Satyal presided over the festivities as guests enjoyed Chef Young’s decadent four-course vegetarian meal. Highlights included a salad of fire-roasted heirloom peppers, toasted pumpkin seeds, dried cranberries, quinoa, mixed greens and cilantro; Tuscan eggplant rollatini; a grilled garden vegetable stack; and spinach ricotta ravioli. Everyone enjoyed a traditional white cake with dark-chocolate mousse and buttercream icing, and split vanilla bean ice cream. Guests danced and celebrated into the night, and it was certainly an event to be remembered. “Ruchi’s vision was inspired by her individual heritage and the Resort’s heritage,” Stevens says. “By blending the two, she created a one-of-a-kind style that did not go unnoticed. Many of the wedding guests commented on how they had never attended such an elegant affair and that the combination of the Indian cultural touches enhanced the beauty of the Cathedral Ballroom.”

SOMETHING FOR EVERYBODY Indeed, the Gupta-Kumar wedding is a perfect example of how the Resort and its experienced team create one-of-a-kind events to suit any style, size or budget. From small, intimate spaces to sprawling ballrooms in a variety of styles, as well as outdoor options, the Resort has the venue for any wedding’s ceremony, reception, rehearsal dinner and other related events, all set amid acres of manicured gardens, a half-mile stretch of private beach and stunning historical architecture. Stevens recommends the following combination: a ceremony in one of the lush gardens throughout the Resort’s grounds, paired with a cocktail reception at the rooftop lounge. CapaCity: private dining room, 40 guests; full restaurant, 100 guests

the recently renovated Beach Club, which has a sleek, contemporary aesthetic, or the elegant, Venetian-inspired Yacht Club. No matter which individual venues the bride and groom choose, they can be assured that the event will be planned for ease of use—meaning that nobody will be trekking across the property just to get to the reception. When it comes to the menu for the big day, the options are truly limitless. Guests can choose from more than 12 served dinner menus and five buffets for luncheons, cocktail receptions and dinners, with add-on choices like the Gold Coast Seafood Bar, a Serendipity Sundae Station, a New American Foam Bar and a Morimoto Japanese Sushi Bar elevating things to the next level. The centerpiece of it all—the wedding cake—couldn’t be in better hands than with the team of executive pastry chef Jean Spielmann and master cake artist Stephen Day. From cake flavors, fillings and frostings to colors, shapes and adornments, they’ll customize a creation to the couple’s every whim. Furthermore, the Resort’s all-inclusive services extend to flowers and decor as well, with the weddings company Boca by Design on the property. From the flatware and table linens to the lighting and the band, all the details and decisions can be made at this one-stop shop. And that’s essentially the message that the Resort wants to send: Stevens and her team can handle anything and everything related to the wedding— overall, a hassle-free experience that truly makes for happily ever after.

spa Palazzo debuts an exclusive brand, a revamped menu and an energizing new take on the spa experience.

T

he purpose of a spa is to rejuvenate and refresh its guests, so it only makes sense that a spa should periodically rejuvenate and refresh its offerings—and that is just what Spa Palazzo at the Boca Raton Resort & Club has done over recent months. In an effort to stay ahead of the curve and offer a highly specialized pampering experience, spa director Cindi Moreno and her team have replaced all of the spa’s treatment lines with one world-class brand: Natura Bissé. The 34-year-old line was founded in Barcelona, Spain, based on pioneering research aimed at hydrolyzing collagen, elastin and keratin proteins into readily absorbable forms. Its continually groundbreaking research has yielded a wide-ranging line of highly effective face and body treatments, comprising more than 150 products. “They’re always creating new products that can do anything for anyone, no matter what your age is,” Moreno says. “It is a higher-end line, which is just perfect for our discerning clientele.” She says that spas and retailers often compete to be able to offer this highly exclusive brand, and Spa Palazzo is proud to announce that it is one of only a few spas in the United States to carry Natura Bissé. “We’re really excited about that,” she says. “A lot of their treatments are

something new and different that have never been seen here before or in the area, so we think our clients will be excited, too.” One of the Natura Bissé lines that the spa now carries is the Diamond Collection, an antiaging line that includes “an exclusive and innovative Global [antiaging] treatment with extraordinary lifting effects,” according to the brand. The ultrarich products provide a boost for even the most time-worn skin. These products are featured in such treatments as the Diamond Sublime, during which the aesthetician balances the guest’s chakras with gems before applying a luminous mud with diamond dust. “You get a magnetic massage, and that helps to energize the body and relieve tension,” Moreno says. “And then we take a magnet at the end and actually remove all of the magnetic particles off the body.” According to the brand, the magnetic ritual helps “eliminate the effects of the electromagnetic pollution or the stress caused by our daily life.” The treatment also includes “the exclusive DNA Facial, created with the cuttingedge ATP technology and frozen DNA,” it says. Another advanced Natura Bissé line at Spa Palazzo is the Inhibit Collection, which targets fine lines and wrinkles as effectively as injections, Moreno says. “So instead of Botox or fillers, this line now can help to fill those fine lines and wrinkles in our face noninvasively,” she says.

Make the Most of Your spa experience Before treatment: arrive early. Dedicate yourself to wellness fully by giving yourself time to settle in before treatment and time to take advantage of Spa Palazzo’s famous Bath ritual, a sevenpart series of hot and cool pools, baths and showers that detox the skin, relax the body and prepare you for treatment. During treatment: Discuss specific issues with your therapist. maximize the benefits you get from treatment, whether it’s a facial or a massage, by mentioning your skin and muscle problem areas and what you’re hoping to achieve with treatment. Customization is a key component in Spa Palazzo’s mission to provide a better spa experience. after treatment: Don’t reserve healthy living for spa days alone. ask your aesthetician or therapist what you can do at home to keep up healthy habits that will help maintain your results and possibly improve your quality of life. Sometimes simply drinking extra water, meditating and/or using a specific product can make a difference.

Natura Bissé’s La Alternativa facial

mizner’s dream

Spa director Cindi Moreno

S pa pa l a z z o

A treatment based on that collection is La Alternativa, a facial that reduces expression lines and wrinkles (using a Lipofiller complex), smoothes skin and makes one look more rejuvenated. Furthermore, using the brand’s own groundbreaking Octamioxyl ingredient, the treatment helps prevent further facial contractions. “Because, of course, no matter how old we are, all of our emotions are always right on our face,” Moreno says. “It helps with those marionette lines along the mouth and those deep lines on the forehead. It really helps to smooth those out.” Those looking to repair their skin after a day in the South Florida sun will appreciate the Citrus Drench, a body wrap that energizes and moisturizes the skin with crystallized honey, shea butter, ascorbic acid and orange juice. “It’s great for anyone who has experienced sun damage or just free radicals from the environment,” Moreno says. “It helps to restore the elasticity and firmness of the skin and is very hydrating.” Furthermore, Zones treatments target specific trouble areas like tired legs or hands and feet—perfect for those who have been hitting the links or the tennis court all day. The former starts with a light exfoliation, after which a botanicalpacked gel is applied via a massage to boost circulation. The overall effect is a sensation of lightness, coolness and comfort for those aching legs and swollen ankles. The all-new spa menu also comprises massages, lip and eye treatments, scrubs and baths. And the adjacent Salon Palazzo also offers manicures and pedicures incorporating Natura Bissé products. (Spa Palazzo loyalists needn’t fear: The much beloved Water Ritual is still a mainstay.) Moreno believes that carrying one brand throughout the spa will help make the overall experience more cohesive and seamless. Plus, Natura Bissé’s Spanish history is a natural fit for the architecture and ambience of the spa itself, which was based upon the Alhambra Palace in Spain. “They really go hand in hand,” Moreno says. Indeed, history is something that Moreno and her staff are keeping in mind as the spa moves forward into this exciting new chapter of its existence. “Natura Bissé is a more contemporary line, and the Resort is a place of deep tradition, so we’re trying to bridge the generations,” she says. “If your parents and grandparents have been coming here all their lives, we want to stay cutting-edge so you’ll also come and bring your kids as well. That way, we can continue the tradition of the Boca Raton Resort & Club.” Whether guests come to the spa to relax in solitude, rejuvenate their bodies with a healthy massage or visit with family and friends, the staff hopes to customize the experience to suit the expectations of each person who walks through the door. “If you want to have a social time and connect with your family and create memories, we’ll help you create those memories so you’ll remember us, and we become a part of the tradition going forward,” she says. In fact, Moreno says that the “paradigm of spa is shifting,” with an emphasis on providing not only physical benefits but psychological ones as well. Essentially, Spa Palazzo seeks to make the spa experience more than just skin deep. “Whatever your reason for coming to Spa Palazzo, by the time you leave, we want you to feel better not just physically but emotionally.”

Denise Vitello Her background: This past fall, the resort’s spacious Spa Palazzo relaunched with an all-new skin-care line: natura bissé, bringing with it 34 years of dermal rejuvenation originating from barcelona. as the company’s corporate national sales manager, denise Vitello has spearheaded the resort’s transition into what she considers “the best brand that’s out there, because it’s all about integrity. It’s a luxurious company that has so much heart behind it.” Vitello’s résumé includes 17 years running spas, most recently at the Mandarin oriental in new York. InSIder’S TIPS: “There’s a misconception that if you just go to a spa once in a while and get a facial, you’re taking care of your skin. What we try and educate our consumers to understand is that the skin is your largest organ in the body. Just like anything else, you need to work it regularly. You need to have a home regimen in addition to going out and receiving a professional treatment for your skin. “and we are very big into sun protection. even walking outside, you need to have protection every single day, and you need to cleanse every night, and not leave makeup on before you go to bed. and stay hydrated. Water is what our body is mostly made of, so we encourage lots of fresh water going into the system.” beST ParT abouT THe reSorT: “They have an amazing membership base, and they have a real sense of community. The thing that I love about the resort and Spa Palazzo is the fact that they’re encouraging this communal sense, and that they have partnered with natura bissé in order to provide members with the extreme luxury and quality they’ve anticipated over the years.”

The resort can help you hit the top of your game, from tennis and golf to flying a kite.

e

xperts, pundits, specialists, connoisseurs—the Boca Raton Resort & Club is chockablock with professionals in every area of expertise, from beer to beauty. Each of these talented individuals is dedicated to providing guests and members with the grade-A service they’ve come to expect from the Resort. Here’s a look at five of them— who they are, how they tick and some of their best memories over their years at the Resort.

Mike Trinley his background: In another life, Mike Trinley was a Florida State University graduate with a degree in advertising whose first job out of college was working on an unsuccessful state

senate campaign. By the time he was looking for his next job, the golf bug had bitten him. Trinley knew some friends working at the Resort, and he started out as a bellman. Eventually, he climbed through the exhaustive ranks to become head golf professional, a post he has occupied for eight years. He has presided over course visits from Bill Clinton and General Electric president Jeffrey Immelt, and back when the Resort’s par-71 course was the home site of the ADT Skills Challenge, he welcomed Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and other world-class golfers to Boca. besT MeMory froM his Job: “In the last year of the Skills Challenge, we had Dan Marino and Jerry Rice here. On our 12th fairway, we got to see Dan Marino throw a 40-yard pass to Jerry Rice. It was one of the coolest things I’ve seen.”

insider’s Tips: “As a beginning golfer, you want to work with your grip, posture and alignment; it goes back to these three fundamentals. Everybody has an idea of how you should move the club head through the ball and propel it, but there’s a proper way to put your hands on the club. As far as posture, a lot of people stand too tall or hunch over too much. You want to find that nice, athletic position.” favoriTe club: “My putter. A lot of the people who are very good at this game can hit the ball long, but if you’re a good putter and hit every green in regulation, and you twoputt every hole, that’s 36 strokes, or half of par. Fifty percent of your shots are coming from one club. It’s important, and not enough people practice it enough.”

candy man Jean Spielmann HiS background: Born in Switzerland, Spielmann cut his culinary teeth in the confectionary boot camp of France. His journey continued in Canada, where he worked at a Four Seasons hotel, then Bermuda, and it concluded at the Boca Raton Resort & Club. One of the Resort’s linchpins, Spielmann has been its pastry chef since the early 1980s. As well as handling the dessert menus for all of the Resort’s restaurants, he contributes sweet confections to its charity galas and parties. Spielmann is an artist whose medium happens to be dough and sugar. He’s made custom cakes for countless visiting dignitaries, from presidents Clinton and Bush to Jennifer Lopez. His creations include a $1,000, 50-scoop ice cream sundae topped with edible 24-karat gold leaf (he’s sold about four of them so far) and a 14-foot cake developed for the Resort’s 75th anniversary. It required a ladder to complete that one. beSt part about HiS Job: “It’s the daily challenges we have, the requests from our guests. They always want something a little bit different, from desserts to wedding cakes.” inSider’S tipS: “If you want to be a baker, the first thing you should do is go to a school where they teach pastries and chocolates, maybe the Culinary Institute of America, but it’s not for everybody, because it’s quite expensive. But they have other schools in Fort Lauderdale and Miami. Start there and get the basics. “Once you finish, I recommend working in a well-known shop, where you can finish learning the tools. It’s a different environment, and you can learn so much. Then, I suggest experimenting with your own ideas, forming your own identity.”

Favorite deSSertS: “I love cold and warm desserts together—like ice cream over a very warm chocolate cake. Or even just a really good apple pie.”

beeR guy

John Rudolph his backgRound: John Rudolph is too humble to call himself a “beer expert,” but the culinary team at the Resort is all too happy to bestow the title upon him. The 27-year-old graduate of the Culinary Institute of America began his tenure at the Resort five years ago as an extern for Executive Chef Andrew Roenbeck, who convinced the promising cook to stay on full-time after graduation. Rudolph has become an aficionado of the numerous beers offered at 501 East, the Resort’s signature restaurant, where he also acts as sous

chef, developing the menu and devising new specials. Groups of 25 or more can imbibe Rudolph’s extensive knowledge of brewskis at the Resort’s official Beer Tastings, where Rudolph pairs beers with inventive small plates. insideR’s tip: “As far as beer goes, the sky’s the limit. It’s not like a wine thing, where white wines pair well with white fishes, and darker wines pair well with red meat. With beer, it’s strictly up to your taste. Indian pale ales (IPAs) go great with fish, but they also go really well with pork and other red meats. It depends on what people like to drink.”

best paRt about his Job: “It’s always a new, unique experience every day. There’s always some different challenge or aspect of the job that’s always changing. I guess it’s the level of uncertainty that I really like. You never know what will come out of left field at any given moment.” FavoRite beeR: “It depends on what I’m in the mood for. I like IPAs, I love stouts. I can’t nail it down, but a couple of my favorite beers are an imperial porter called Gonzo, from Flying Dog, and Dogfish Head, which makes a great IPA and some really unique beers in their Ancient Ales series.”

rackEt man

Eric SilvEr HiS background: An avid baseball and tennis player growing up, Silver decided to drop the bat for a racket full-time. At age 14, he first visited the Resort to be trained by the club’s seasonal tennis pro. He worked his way up to director of tennis, a post he’s held for 16 years. He oversees the Resort’s entire tennis operation, from court maintenance to the creation of programs (he recently launched the Resort’s first competitive junior tennis program) to the private lessons, camps and clinics that he instructs. bESt part of HiS job: “I like the fact that we have the consistency of club members and the inconsistency of people that come in—that we’ll get 300 or 400 new guests coming in each week. It keeps it active.”

AAron Bristol

bESt mEmory from HiS job: “When I started, the tennis center was moving from the old location on the north side of the property to the south side of the property, so nobody was sure what to expect. We were building 18 clay courts above ground, which was unheard of. It was a difficult period, but we got through it— and we’ve been rated among the top five tennis resorts in the country.”

114

mizner’s dream

inSidEr’S tipS: “I usually try to get players to relax. They’re kind of high-strung. Tennis is played best when relaxed; after a day or two down here, they start playing better.”

kite RunneR

Randy Lowe His backgRound: His nickname suggests an obscure superhero, but Randy “The Kiteman” Lowe is an average guy, a retired math teacher from Boston who happens to have the best kite collection you’ve ever seen. A professional kite flyer and exhibitor of some of the coolest “show kites” the world over, Lowe has taken his passion for the high-flying hobby into his latest position, “kite concierge” at the Resort’s Boca Beach Club. Each weekend, the Delray resident

hosts a beachfront kite-flying program for guests at the oceanfront club. insideR’s tip: Don’t run with the kite. “It’s just a matter of putting the kite together and turning it back into the wind and letting the wind do the rest. And spacing, keeping it spaced properly. I stop them when they start running, because they could have an accident. My [top] concern in Boca is safety.” best paRt about His job: “I know that

when I put those kites up in the air, I’m going to attract attention. When my wife and I first came down here, nobody talked to us. We went to the beach, we sat there, and people just went on their way. When I started flying the kites, we met so many people, which is the reason we’d go back time and time again.” FavoRite kite: “‘The ‘Space Racer.’ It’s my best kite because of the attention it gets from young and old, and because it lights up at night, which makes it look real.”

the NotoriouS

BuNNy yeaGer the photographer who made bikinis, Bettie Page and South Florida famous is back in the spotlight.

Quick: Name the woman who helped popularize the bikini, made Bettie Page famous, inspired generations of photographers, and virtually invented the concept of South Florida as the sun-and-fun capital, long before that became a catchphrase? if you said, “Bunny Yeager,” you win. But this isn’t merely a history quiz. Bunny Yeager is back in vogue. More than five decades after she first made a splash as a fashion-model-turnedphotographer, 2013 may be the year the 82-year-old Yeager becomes famous all over again. Of course, she never planned on being anything else. Yeager grew up outside of Pittsburgh, where her father worked for Westinghouse. When his doctor told him he needed a warmer climate, the elder Yeager and his wife moved the family to Miami, bringing their reluctant 17-year-old daughter with them. “i had a boyfriend; it was my senior year of high school,” remembers Yeager. “But they wouldn’t let me stay up there.” When she got here, she was instantly smitten with the surroundings. “i hadn’t been anywhere except Pittsburgh,” she says. “Miami was so beautiful. it was like a movie set.” That’s when the 5-foot, 10-inch auburn-haired beauty, who was born Linnea Eleanor Yeager, decided she needed a more glamorous name to go with the new locale. She remembered a movie she’d seen a few years earlier, “Week-End at the Waldorf.” it was a remake of the classic “Grand Hotel,” and in it, Lana Turner, then in her sweater-girl ascent, played a stenographer who dreams of bigger things. The character was called Bunny Smith. “When i heard that name ...,” sighs Yeager. “i had never heard anything like that before. So when i came down to Miami, i said, ‘That’s going to be my name. i’m going to become something else.’ i just remodeled myself into what i wanted to be.” What she wanted to be was just that—a model. After graduating from Miami Edison Senior High School, she enrolled at the coronet Modeling School and Agency in downtown Miami. From the very beginning, there was something

about Yeager that captivated the camera—a kind of small-town innocence to go with the curvy, voluptuous figure. She drew attention. in 1949 she entered a local beauty pageant and attracted a very famous admirer. “it was some charitable thing; they had this ‘Sports Queen’ contest, and i won,” she remembers. “Joe DiMaggio crowned me.” This was during the Yankee clipper’s bachelor days, pre-Marilyn Monroe. “i went out with him one time,” says Yeager. Then, so that nobody thinks she unduly influenced the judges, she adds: “After the contest!” She did have one unfair advantage: a homemade bikini. “You couldn’t buy one in the store,” she says of the two-piece suit just then coming into vogue. “So i made my own. All of the other girls were dressed more conservatively, but i felt right at home in my homemade bikini.” Bikinis became a signature of sorts for Yeager. Over the next few years, she’d fashion literally hundreds of them by hand—first for herself and later, when she became a photographer, for her models. Some had flowers sewn on; others had animal prints painted on. All were original creations. “i never wore the same suit twice,” she boasts. “it made it easier for me to sell my work to men’s magazines.” She’s quick, though, to point out that she was far from your average slice of cheesecake: “i was a high-fashion model with a legitimate agency. i was coronet’s most popular model for years. it’s just that i happened to do bathingsuit modeling. i was always posing for the city of Miami Beach or the city of Miami. i think i was in more newspapers than any other girl.” All these years later, Yeager still keeps a clipping of a feature that ran in a local newspaper. “it was one of those ‘famous faces’ quizzes, where you had to identify the people pictured,” she says, pointing to the spread. “Most of them were politicians or people like that, except for me.” The journey from model to photographer began almost by accident for Yeager: “[Famed photographer] Roy Pinney used to come down here. i mentioned to him that i was taking a photography class. i just wanted to

be able to make copies of my modeling photos; I didn’t really want to be a photographer. But Roy said, ‘No, no, that’s a good story,’ so he took my picture and put it on the cover of U.S. Camera magazine with the caption ‘The World’s Prettiest Photographer.’” It was yet another nickname that would stick, and one that would prove to be good for business. A female photographer in the early 1950s was, like Yeager’s one-of-a-kind swimsuits, a novelty that few magazines could pass up. “Bunny wanted to look nice in her photos, and that’s how she came to photograph herself,” says friend and former model Mary Robbins. “She felt like she could do a better job [than any man]. Usually people don’t photograph themselves. But she did.” Yeager quickly trained her camera on others. “She was very professional, she

was fast, and she liked taking action pictures, where you were moving around,” recalls Robbins. “Nothing was ever pornographic or suggestive. She always managed to place her photos in very artful magazines.” Yeager’s first sale came in 1954. It was a cover shot of a Miami model named Maria Stinger for Eye magazine. (Dubbed “Miami’s Marilyn Monroe” after winning a local beauty contest, Stinger would become a men’s magazine sensation in the mid-1950s before fading from view.) Not content to just shoot away, Yeager would place her subjects in interesting settings or situations. “I learned by being a model that people always wanted something different,” she says. “So I would constantly look for ideas.” One of these involved taking 10 models, dressing them in sweaters and shorts, and invading the local firefighter school. “We had the girls jumping off

It was pretty inventive stuff for the 1950s, and Yeager knew it. “You had to have a little more talent to do that than the [typical] leg shot,” she says with obvious satisfaction. If Yeager had spent the rest of the decade doing similar work, we still might know of her today, but a fateful phone call all but guaranteed her place in pop history. “Bettie called me—everybody had my number back then—and told me she was a New York model,” recalls Yeager. “I took her sight unseen. I figured any New York model had to be something special. I didn’t know she was doing bondage [photos].” Bettie, of course, was Bettie Page, the model whose black bangs, wayward schoolgirl looks, and come-what-may sexual posturing would eventually make her the most famous pinup of the Twentieth Century. To Yeager, only one thing mattered: “I found out she didn’t mind posing nude.” The fledgling photographer had never had a model willing to pose in the buff. It being late 1954, Yeager decided to spice up the holiday season by putting Page in a Santa hat— and nothing else. The resulting photos, including one of Page winking knowingly at the camera while she hangs ornaments on a Christmas tree, were just the right mix of playful and provocative. Yeager had gotten some great shots; the only question was what to do with them. “It was near the end of the year and so I thought maybe I could sell a calendar for the new year,” she says. “But I didn’t have the mailing address of any calendar company. Instead I sent [the photos] to Playboy.” Hugh Hefner’s magazine was in its infancy, but already shaking up American mores. A naked, naughty Santa was an early Christmas wish come true for the young publisher. Hefner called Yeager and told her he’d buy the photos for $100. Page made her Playboy debut in the January 1955 issue and a legend was born; two, if you count her photographer. Yeager would become one of Hefner’s regular shooters, piling up eight centerfolds over the years. Page would become Bunny’s most famous

The 1950s and 1960s went by in a whirl for Yeager. “She was a celebrity,” says Robbins, and her imprint was everywhere in South Florida. Sammy Davis Jr. and Maria Stinger during a photo lesson Bunny gave to Sammy, Miami Beach, 1955; Bunny doing a self-portrait

collaborator. Together the two trekked up to Africa U.S.A., a wildlife theme park in Boca Raton where animals roamed free. Opened in 1953 (and closed in 1961), the 300-acre park’s star attraction was a pair of trained cheetahs named Moja and Mbili (“One” and “Two” in Swahili). It was rumored the cats had been featured in the 1951 Hollywood spectacular “Quo Vadis” as the personal pets of Emperor Nero’s wife. Why not make them Bettie Page’s pets in a pictorial? Yeager outfitted Page in a custommade, leopard-patterned jungle suit and posed her with the two cheetahs, as well as monkeys, other animals, and even actors portraying African cannibals. (The cannibal shots, in which Page is often tied to a tree, are a sly nod to Page’s bondage roots.) The resulting photos are among the most iconic images of Page. While Page would soon gravitate away from pinups and toward religion—she found God in, of all places, Key West—Yeager’s star continued to rise. She appeared on the television shows ‘What’s My Line?” and “To Tell the Truth,” where, in both cases, the source of the fun was the same: reconciling the fact that the beautiful Yeager was also an accomplished photographer, and the creator of all those racy pictures everyone was talking about. Then there was her guest spot on the “Tonight Show” starring Johnny Carson. There to plug her book, How I Photograph Myself, Yeager ended up stealing the show. “I was on for 23 minutes,” she says. “Today you get five minutes—if they’ll even let you on to talk about a book.” Sometimes Yeager’s work brought her in proximity to the Hollywood dream factory that first inspired her. In 1962 she traveled to Jamaica to shoot behind-the-scenes photos on the set of “Dr. No,” the first James Bond film. Her beach shots of original Bond girl Ursula Andress in a bikini were probably as instrumental as the film in making the

Swiss bombshell an international star. Yeager even managed to make it into the movies herself. When Frank Sinatra came to town to film his tough-guy detective flicks “Tony Rome” and “Lady in Cement” in the late 1960s, Yeager, by this time a blonde, scored a couple of bit parts. The 1950s and 1960s went by in a whirl for Yeager. “She was a celebrity,” says Robbins, and her imprint was everywhere in South Florida. In fact it would be no stretch to suggest that the dominant image most people had of South Florida—beautiful girls and palm trees, a beguiling mixture of sun, fun, and implied sin—came straight from Yeager’s camera. It was a grand moment in time. But unlike in a photo, time doesn’t stand still, and the world kept turning. In the 1970s, the relatively tame girl-next-door quality of Playboy’s early centerfolds gave way to the all-you-can-see-andthen-some spreads in Hustler and Penthouse. Nudie cuties were supplanted by hardcore. And Yeager’s style, so indebted to postwar pinups and Classical Hollywood, all of a sudden seemed passé. As the

NinaRaynor_mizner1213.indd 1

culture became more crass, Yeager was done in by what she calls her “tasteful” approach. Maybe that’s the reason her office, in Miami, feels like a paean to the past. Stacks of black-and-white photos piled so high visitors can hardly move about, notebooks labeled “Bikini Girls 1960s,” a box tagged “Camping trip—Bettie Page and two models.” All are, in a way, reminders of a simpler, better time, when Yeager was at the center of the action. Not that cultural relevance translated into a lot of money for Yeager. There was the bathingsuit line with her name on it that was supposed to take off and never did. The fashion spreads, clearly mimicking her work, which showed up in magazines with no acknowledgment or payment forthcoming. The photos she took of (and with) Bettie Page that have been copied and sold by others. The 2005 film “The Notorious Bettie Page” did much to resurrect interest in the pinup idol, but almost nothing for Yeager. That’s starting to change. In 2010, Yeager had her first museum show, “Bunny Yeager: The

Legendary Queen of the Pin-Up,” a collection of 28 Yeager self-portraits, at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. Citing Yeager as an influence on such renowned self-portrait photographers as Cindy Sherman and Yasumasa Morimura, the show was a key first step in elevating her oeuvre beyond the realm of pop culture. The museum show was followed by the publication in 2012 of Bunny Yeager’s Darkroom: Pin-up Photography’s Golden Era, a volume of rare and never-before-seen photos with text by Petra Mason. Next up: a new exhibition space in Miami’s Wynwood arts district devoted to her work (which was scheduled to open in late 2012); gallery shows in New York and Dallas; a collaboration with German apparel firm Bruno Banani, to produce contemporary redesigns of Yeager’s classic 1950s bikinis; and a careerspanning documentary. Waldorf aStoria through the yearS new Vp of marketing Stuart foster discusses everything Waldorf, then and now.

Stuart Foster

S

tuart Foster knows his Waldorf Astoria history. As the company’s newest vice president of marketing, hired last spring, one of the first thing Foster did was hit the books—learning about the 110 years of history behind the world’s foremost luxury resort brand, from the New York location’s progressive technological insights to a certain movie duo who danced the night away in Boca. But Foster’s job is really to position Waldorf Astoria for the coming decades. He has been hired during a boom time in Waldorf acquisitions, with the company blossoming from three hotels just five years ago to nearly 40 on the ground or in development across the globe. The brand is already preparing resorts for openings in 2020. Foster shared his insights about the past, present and future of Waldorf Astoria with Mizner’s Dream.

What do you look for in a property that you acquire? We’re looking for iconic locations. Every Waldorf Astoria has a sense of place. It has an inspirational environment. For example, we took over the Shanghai Club, which is a more than 100-year-old international club in Shanghai, China, with a real sense of place and a real sense of heritage, and a DNA in its hardware. The Boca Raton Resort & Club has that same iconic location. In Waldorf Beijing, there’s this tree. It’s a 50- or 70-year-old tree. Part of the deal, in looking at this space, was that we couldn’t cut the tree down. So this entire $250 million hotel is being built around this tree, and special protection has gone up around the tree, and the tree is going to be the focal point and the architectural detail that gives people that sense of ‘Wow.’ There are other hotel brands out there that don’t have the legend. They don’t have the history, and when you look at every single one of our properties and where we’re going, all of them have this incredible history and legend to them. That’s what exciting about working for a brand like this.

hoW do you think that Waldorf aStoria haS managed to groW aS much aS it haS in the midSt of a global receSSion? A lot of what’s in the pipeline now started prior to the recession [and] these

things take time—they take years to build. But what you also have is a return to travel. Our business is up, we’re growing, people are traveling more. Luxury now is really about time. People always ask me, “How do you define luxury?” I distill it down to one word: time. People with more money than others use their money and pay for things in order to get more meaningful time for themselves. The explosion is built on the fact that we expect luxury travel to continue to grow. We are a privately held company, and we have very fortunate investors who are willing to invest behind us, because we see in the long run a very strong business opportunity.

What’s your job like? are you required to knoW everything about every resort and to see every property? My job is to oversee the marketing initiatives for Waldorf Astoria and Conrad Hotels and Resorts. My job is to help create the vision for what those brands stand for, and to make sure their positions are very clear—and then to help the company articulate that positioning through not only the marketing efforts but development as well as guest experience, so that we can really convey that grandeur, those extraordinary experiences that folks have when they visit a Waldorf Astoria...We have an arWaldorf’s The London NYC Hotel in New York chive at the Waldorf Astoria in New York that has lots of original documents: original menus from the ‘30s, guest folios, letters, because culturally, it’s important that you’re not riding with staff in the elevator, photographs. There have been many books written about the history of the because you as a guest are much more important than any staff. When you [New York] Waldorf Astoria, since it’s been in existence for 110 years. There’s a very high staff hoW much has the brand changed since concept in some of those countries.

those early years?

Not a lot. When I read these books, I was pulling out phrases like “anticipatory service.” It’s a tenant we train to our staff. We want to anticipate the guest’s needs, not just service their needs. That’s a really important thing, and those words were actually written by William Waldorf back in 1893, when he founded the hotel. A lot of things have been very consistent over the years. We’ve always been very innovative. When the Waldorf in New York opened in 1931, it was wired for television, decades before television was commonplace. The brand was envisioned to be contemporary, modern and high-tech. It was the first hotel to have telephone service to every room. There was enough phone service in the hotel to service a small town. So there was a lot of technology that was put into that building, and of course it’s now been updated, but the tenets of the brand have been very consistent since its origins.

Who are some of the most famous people Who have stayed at Waldorf astoria properties? You have stories of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dancing in the Palm Court of the Boca Raton Resort & Club. It’s a place where they now serve breakfast, but it used to be an open-air dancing area for parties. In New York, I could go on for hours. Every president since Truman has stayed at that hotel, and they’ve never stayed anywhere else while in New York. Queen Elizabeth famously stayed there. The Duke of Windsor, when he abdicated and married Wallis Simpson, took up residence and lived there for many, many years. And today, you have everybody from Angelina Jolie to Johnny Depp; when they do their press junkets for the openings of their new movies, they always take a suite in the towers, because it’s so New York, and it’s such a luxurious, rich environment to host somebody.

What are the cultural differences betWeen the properties: for instance, hoW does the property in saudi arabia differ from the one in jerusalem, and hoW do both differ from the boca raton resort & club?

What’s the protocol like When one of them arrives, and When they’re staying there?

Every hotel has to have its own local flavor, but what’s common across them are the pillars of the brand, such as the True Waldorf Service. It’s something we do in every single Waldorf Astoria around the world. But there would be a little bit of a difference in Saudi Arabia. For instance, the concierge would not go up with you in the elevator to your room. The concierge actually goes up on a separate elevator and beats you to your room,

Usually, privacy and discretion is tantamount. I was in the Waldorf Astoria in New York when Hillary Clinton was staying there, and the GM was extremely discreet about it. Some of the properties, like New York, have private elevators, and ways for cars to get in and out; they have a motor court that’s extremely secure. Those people don’t want to be paraded through the front door, so there’s a big protocol in offering them some discretion to privacy.

What’s in a name?

n Jan. 1, 2012, the Naples Grande Beach Resort, A Waldorf Astoria Resort, gained a new level of prestige overnight. That was the day the property finally earned enough stripes to be rechristened the Waldorf Astoria Naples. It was a happy new year indeed. To a layman, the significance of the renaming may be a matter of semantics, with The Waldorf Astoria name simply gravitating from behind the word “Naples” to in front of it. But in the Waldorf world, the change is akin to a karate expert achieving a black belt, or even a general gaining another star. Much more is expected of the property now. “The Waldorf Astoria name is such an iconic name in the hospitality industry worldwide, and to be associated with that name provides an opportunity for international exposure,” says Hunter Hansen, managing director of the property since 2006. Visitors took notice. In the first two months of the name change, leisure bookings shot up 40 percent. Guests were drawn in, perhaps, by the increased signage—the giant “W.A.” logo atop the 18-story edifice is now visible from a five-mile radius—and other cosmetic improvements on the resort grounds. But they stayed because of the level of service they knew came along with vacationing at a Waldorf Astoria resort. “Changing the name is the easy part of the execution,” Hansen says. “The more important part has to do with product and service enhancements. We knew that we had one chance to wow every guest that came to the resort after the name change. For customers that have been here

“it’s a wonderful place to escape,” says stuart Foster, vP of marketing for Waldorf astoria. “When i visited, i felt i had gone as far as people who fly to the Caribbean or go to Bermuda. it’s a long way from the hustle and bustle of the east coast of Florida.” before and that heard of the change, they’d be looking for something different. For customers who had never been here before and saw that there was a Waldorf Astoria in Naples, they would expect a phenomenal guest experience.” So, beginning Jan. 2, Hansen sat down with his employees in groups of 10 or less, starting with the doormen and valet parkers and moving on to the desk clerks, cleaning staff and beyond. These intimate meetings ran two-and-a-half hours each, with Hansen explaining the significance of the name change, the expectations their guests will now have, and the enhanced service required from them. Team members absorbed a 75-page booklet of new service requirements, which ranged from the general “be genuine,” or “do something special for children,” to the esoteric: Offer a black napkin, instead of a white one, for guests wearing black pants or skirts. In the end, everyone had to be certified to the new service standards, committed to delivering 100 percent of the standards to 100 percent of the guests 100 percent of the time. “It was a very rigorous process to sit with team members, and it took two to three weeks to do that,” Hansen says. “I was the first one to take the certification exam, and I had to pass it at 100 percent. We knew and felt that the service standards were very serious to the guest experience.”

As Southwest Florida’s premier vacation resort, the Waldorf Astoria Naples sits on 23 waterfront acres, along three miles of crystalline beaches and amid a 200-acre nature preserve and mangrove estuary. From the Boca Raton Resort & Club, it’s a little more than two hours away, across I-75 North. For Stuart Foster, VP of marketing for Waldorf Astoria, it’s a trip he made often from his former home in Delray Beach. “The Naples property is an iconic location,” Foster says. “It’s earned its heritage to become a Waldorf Astoria. It offers a sanctuary that is different than Boca. You don’t have the same architectural inspiration that you have with Mizner’s design in Boca Raton, but you have this interaction with mangroves, and this connection to a white, powdered-sugar beach on the Gulf. “It’s a wonderful place to escape for two or three days,” he adds. “When I visited the Naples Grande, I felt I had gone as far as people who fly to the Caribbean or go to Bermuda. It’s a long way from the hustle and bustle of the east coast of Florida.” Recognizing that the resort draws much of its appeal from the beautiful and fragile ecosystem that surrounds it, Hunter Hansen helped usher the Waldorf Astoria Naples toward a One Palm designation in the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Green Lodging Program. Companies and trade organizations that seek environmentally conscious lodging and meeting facilities couldn’t do better than the Naples Waldorf. It operates all of its dining and beach service facilities in accordance with state and county environmental guidelines, it has saved more than 6 million gallons of water through its resort-wide laundry recycling program and the installation of low-flow toilets and faucets, and it uses an ultraviolet light filtration system, among other green advances. Then there’s the estuary, a popular guest attraction in which guided eco-

tours are offered via canoe or kayak. Everything from egrets to alligators can be spotted in their natural habitats, along with indigenous plants from mangroves to ghost orchids. “We have a software program that produces a document that says if you hold your meeting with us, this is the carbon footprint you will save, based on the energy conservation initiatives we have in the resort,” Hansen says. “We were told by the county that our beach is the cleanest in the whole county. We have team member outings where we go out and clean the beach every four or five months.” And it shows.

All the rest According to Hansen, the resort’s most popular attraction is the Golden Door Spa, a Zen-inspired oasis of tranquility. An indoor-outdoor spa village, it includes 12 treatment rooms, a soaking tub, whirlpool bath, sundeck and patio, plus a “floating” hair and nail spa, a pedicure banquette and the Golden Door’s signature meditation labyrinth. “It’s unlike any spa experience because of the Asian design and decor,” Hansen says. “It’s a surreal experience as opposed to a traditional spa.” Guests interested in keeping active during their stay can enjoy the 15 clay tennis courts managed by Peter Burwash International; readers of Tennis maga-

zine designated the property as the eighth-best tennis resort in the country. The 18-hole championship golf course features less-than-two-year-old greens, featuring a course design by environmentally conscious architect Rees Jones. “He’s known for how he contours fairways and bunkers and provides for exceptional drainage, which results in impeccable grass,” Hansen says. “It’s reputed to be one of the top 10 courses in the state of Florida; that’s how the players rank it.” Lastly, of course, you’ll never have to leave the resort for fine dining, with seven on-site restaurants/cafés and 24-hour room service available to guests. Highlights include Aura, a casual, comfortable, all-purpose restaurant; the Beach Bar & Grill, which serves salads, sandwiches, snacks and beverages; and Strip House, modeled after the Zagat-approved Manhattan steak house of the same name. A Michelin two-star chef from France holds culinary fort at the resort. If you want to enjoy the city surrounding the Waldorf Astoria Naples, you can venture out to Olde Naples, a quaint village of open-air art galleries and restaurants that has been likened to Carmel, Calif. The resort is two blocks from the high-end Waterside Shops and less than a mile from the Venetian Village, a boutique shopping area designed after Venice, Italy. But everything you need for a tranquil escape is right there on the resort property—a verdant destination that’s green in more ways than one. Naples, welcome to the True Waldorf Service.

sprawling fire-engine-red steel sculpture rises from the croquet field. A gleaming stainless-steel figure greets visitors from inside the Tower Lobby. Two whales’ tails jut out from a pedestal at the entrance of the Beach Club. These impressive pieces—the work of artists Steve Tobin, Ernest Trova and Peter Busby, respectively—are just three of the 16 sculptures dotted across the 356 acres of the Boca Raton Resort & Club and its sister property, the Boca Beach Club. The works have been acquired by Elaine Baker Gallery, which was recently rebranded Baker Sponder Gallery, a Boca institution that also operates a small ancillary gallery inside the Resort. The gallery is entering its fourth year on the Resort grounds, and it has sold more than $4 million in art since it opened. But the gallery is not resting on its laurels. Gallery director Deborah Sponder’s latest aim is to make Resort members and visitors aware of the enormous sculptures that surround them, not just the 60 or so pieces in the Baker Sponder space. To that end, she developed a Resort sculpture tour along with her brother, Steven. Debuting last summer, the tour includes a map guiding guests to every sculpture on the property. Each sculpture now has a new placard with a phone number to call; when dialed, guests will be treated to 90-second audio clips about

Simply scan the code with your smartphone, and a page full of information about the artwork and the artist pops up on your screen. “The idea was to bring the contemporary art museum experience out of museums and galleries and bring it here,” says Steven Sponder, who handles the technical and marketing aspects of the tour. “The piece of the puzzle that was missing was the information that goes along with the art. So we did all the research. We went to MoMA, we went to all the top galleries. Baker Sponder Gallery has plans to expand its presence to the Waldorf Astoria Naples and Key West Casa Marina, as well as two resorts in California. “[The tour] has changed the whole complexion of everything we do here,” Steven says. “Before, people saw the art, and they’d walk right by it, or they’d say, ‘Well, that’s a pretty piece of decorative art.’ Now they read this, and they go, ‘Wow, this is a Manolo Valdes, he’s a major artist, I didn’t know that.’ It opens up a whole new experience for them.”

THe new Body Language The Cenegenics institute at the Resort spreads the word of preventive medicine.

e

veryone knows that some Americans tend to take better care of their cars than their health, disassembling and reassembling engines, scrubbing between nuts and bolts until every gear glistens—all of this to ensure that their vehicles will run in top shape for years to come. Doctors have long maintained that if the same mind-set and passion can be put toward the human body, then we might have the ability to slow down the deterioration of our own engines that comes with the aging process. Dr. Robert Willix Cenegenics Medical Institute on the grounds of The Boca Raton Resort & Club is on the forefront of this overhaul, getting patients excited about feeling good and being healthy again. A major pioneer in the field of preventive medicine, Cenegenics prides itself on the depth of its medical diagnostics as well as patientspecific nutrition and exercise programs. Nick Balestriere, an exercise and lifestyle counselor at Cenegenics Boca Raton, is a 40-year-old living in the body of a college athlete—with an attitude to match. “Someone may come to me and say ‘my back hurts.’ And my response is, ‘Well, let’s figure out the 50 reasons that is happening,’” Balestriere says. When a patient visits Cenegenics for the first time, he or she undergoes a seven-hour battery of diagnostics, from bone density tests to blood pressure and even oxygen consumption. Cenegenics uses this extensive information to help the patient “connect the dots,” in a learning process that helps each person understand how the comprehensive medical data translates to their personal lives, their habits, their avenues for improved health and wellness. This exhaustively comprehensive examination covers interior, as well as exterior, degradation of the body, using state-of-the-art instruments. Patients will have their bone density and body fat checked by the GE Lunar, a $20,000

machine, and have their metabolic measurements tested by a ParvoMedics device, the instrument of choice for NASA astronauts and Olympic athletes. In another exam room, medical professionals will study patients’ balance, gait and how the body is functioning as a whole. Cenegenics is also not afraid to dip into Eastern medicine, fighting “invisible” as well as visible diseases. “In this day and age, we fight things we don’t even see,” Balestriere says. “We’re trying to stay ahead of [the patients’] nonphysical manifestations.” Finally, patients spend two hours with a physician, and more if they need it. They leave with a 72-page book and DVD about the program, with plans to visit again for follow-up examinations. And it seems to be this very emphasis on the patient as an individual that has made Cenegenics so successful. “When you have the exact information based on your body, the success rate is so much higher, so much faster, and so much safer because you’re not just rolling the dice based on what everyone else has done,” Balestriere says. Finding and preventing potentially damaging health problems, rather than treating them after they have appeared, is at the core of the Cenegenics philosophy. Dr. Robert D. Willix Jr., chief medical officer at Cenegenics, constantly works to make preventive medicine a standard and more widely used practice. He has expanded his scope beyond age management to the battle lines of heart health through an innovative heart disease and stroke prevention program. This pioneering program is designed to identify people who may be at risk for heart disease or stroke at any age. “There are teenagers now who are struggling with risk factors for diabetes and heart disease,” Willix says. “We are now seeing heart attacks occurring in 20 year olds.”

mizner’s dream

137

CenegeniCs Lifestyle counselor Barbara Schuman offers hands-on diagnostics.

Willix, who has written five books on health and aging—as well as a newsletter that drew 82,000 subscribers—is a former cardiothoracic surgeon and an outspoken critic of the typical patient mind-set; he doesn’t mince words when assessing the state of medicine in America. “People would rather buy a flat-screen TV for $5,000 than spend five grand on their bodies,” he says. “They believe health is an inalienable right. With modern medicine, it’s like ‘Let’s wait until you’re broken.’ We only pay for illness. People take better care of their teeth and their cars than their bodies.” That’s why Cenegenics is working with two of the best laboratories in the country on screening heart disease and stroke risk by studying everything from DNA to corroded arteries and inflammatory markers, and observing how this all plays a factor in disease prevention. “Things like cholesterol levels on their own are irrelevant now. There are so many more elements that we can observe that allow us to pinpoint the problems before they really start causing trouble,” Willix explains. “For that reason, this program is good for people who have had disease, but it’s even more powerful for people who are in great health.” As the world of preventive medicine continues to gain ground, many doctors are seeking ways to expand their traditional training and work with Cenegenics; the institute trains around 300 physicians a year, and has 20 educaExercise counselor tion centers in the country. A relatively Nick Balestriere new Cenegenics Fellowship is available for doctors interested in training to work in a Cenegenics center. Lately, Cenegenics has been receiving calls from physicians around the world requesting that the institute open up even more centers; part of the rising interest is a result of Cenegenics’ increasing involvement with stem-cell science. “There are a lot of exciting things going on in the world of stem cells that are being blocked in part because there’s the misconception that we’re talking about cloning sheep,” Willix says. “Here’s the deal: Currently, your body repairs itself because in every organ of your body you have innate stem cells. If you break your arm or have a heart attack, those stem cells are why you don’t die. We’re talking about taking your stem cells, something that is already inside of you, and using them to heal your body.”

138

mizner’s dream

Cenegenics’ desire to encourage healthy living is a great complement to the Boca Raton Resort & Club’s destination experience—perfectly poised to offer residents and visitors alike a new dimension in wellness and quality of life, with some one-on-one enthusiasm. “My job is the greatest job in the world. It is so much fun because what we do for Cenegenics is very hands-on,” says Cenegenics exercise and lifestyle counselor Barbara Schuman. When Schuman works with a new patient, he or she becomes part of her life; she follows up on their daily diet and offers ideas on how to tweak their nutrition without sacrificing all of their favorite foods and restaurants. “And I’m so inspired that I go home and try new recipes,” she says. One of Schuman’s favorite success stories is the 57-year-old real estate developer from the Northwest who wanted to lower his body fat, increase his muscle mass, regain his mental sharpness, increase his energy and regain his libido. “This was a guy who played basketball in college,” Schuman says. “But then all he did was work for most of his adult life. He stopped going to the gym. He weighed 258 pounds. He was tall, but he had this belly that hung over his pants. He looked like hell. And he felt like hell.” The patient changed the way he ate, and, under Schuman’s oversight, began a regular cardio and weightlifting routine. After being prescribed hormones and adhering, he began to change. “When a man has low testosterone or is overweight, he doesn’t have the will to exercise. But when you change his nutrition and give him a gradual change in his exercise, the patient becomes excited about feeling good.” Eventually the patient took up yoga and spinning—and had a whole new lease on life. “This was a guy who in a million years would never believe he’d be going to a yoga class,” Schuman says. “But he was willing to try anything after seeing the results. For the first time since college he was open to new things, and he started to push himself further. “We’re in the business of helping people remember what it feels like to feel good. Look at me,” says Schuman, flexing her bicep. “I’m 60. We are the role models for our patients. People need to see the embodiment of what is possible. You don’t have to be a crotchety old person. I know that we don’t have to accept old age.”

One thousand Ocean

star power propels this iconic property into its final sell-out season

I

n the realm of luxurious oceanfront condominiums, it comes as no surprise that Boca Raton’s iconic One Thousand Ocean continues its impressive sales success, along with its notable significance regarding location, lifestyle and design. These factors, collectively, have propelled the uniquely modern, seven-story boutique building into what many real estate specialists believe will be its final selling season. As one of South Florida’s most sought after and lauded properties, One

Thousand Ocean has thrived in the spotlight. In addition to reporting record sales since its completion in 2010 (including fetching the highest price for any new condominium in Palm Beach County in 2011), this trophy condominium has been singled out as a shining “star” in many ways. When the property was still on the drawing board in 2007, the Developers & Builders Alliance named One Thousand Ocean its Project of the Year winner in the luxury multifamily residential category. The Southeast Florida/

Clockwise, from top: The Kleiers featured One Thousand Ocean on two separate episodes of HGTV’s “Selling New York; an aerial view of the property; a sky-high kitchen, Jennifer Lopez with the “Parker” film crew in front of One Thousand Ocean; LXR ‘s Jamie Telchin with actor Jason Statham and One Thousand Ocean’s Maria Scarola.

Caribbean District Council of the Urban Land Institute followed suit in 2010 by selecting One Thousand Ocean (together with the neighboring Boca Beach Club redesign) its Vision Award “Project of the Year” finalist. One Thousand Ocean also piqued the interest of the Kleiers, who are among Manhattan’s leading and most highly visible residential real estate brokers. This led to the condominium’s prominent role on two separate episodes of HGTV’s highly rated reality series, “Selling New York.” Airing in 2010, the first episode featured the Kleiers’ visit to the building while it was still under construction. A follow-up episode, in 2011, showcased the completed building and all of its beauty. In addition to being a TV star, One Thousand Ocean is expected to play a part on the silver screen in 2013, when the action thriller “Parker” opens in movie theaters nationally. The film’s producer selected the building and area around One Thousand Ocean’s sales center as the backdrop for some scenes with A-list actors Jennifer Lopez and Jason Statham. One Thousand Ocean’s own celebrity status continued this past summer when Ocean Home magazine included the building’s largest penthouse among its Top 25 Coastal Homes For Sale in the U.S. Furthermore, in fall 2012, Florida Design magazine published a story about V*Starr Interiors’ furnished One Thousand Ocean model designed by Venus Williams. This was the first time in the magazine’s history that a person, in this instance Venus Williams, was ever placed on its front cover.

“Media interest must be earned, and One Thousand Ocean deserves to be in the forefront because we feel it is ‘the’ building in South Florida,” says Jamie Telchin, president of development for LXR Luxury Resorts & Hotels. “All of this TV and film coverage confirms that One Thousand Ocean is truly a building with an unparalleled location and lifestyle at the gateway of a world-class city.” Finished one-story Residences and two-story Beach Villas are available for immediate occupancy. Additionally, designer-ready Penthouses with 14-foot ceilings may be customized to transform a buyer’s grand vision into his/her dream home. Prices range from about $3 million to $15 million. Most apartments include private elevator lobbies, floor-to-ceiling walls of glass, fireplaces, top-of-the-line kitchens, spa-like baths, oversized terraces with a private plunge pool and outdoor kitchen, and an enclosed two-car garage. Residents of One Thousand Ocean who elect private membership at the Boca Raton Resort & Club enjoy innumerable amenities and services, both at the Resort and at One Thousand Ocean. As an example, due to the building’s proximity to the Resort, member residents are able to opt for room service from the Beach Club in the privacy of their own homes.
