OUTSIDE OPINION: Renato’s and other Palm Beach restaurants are feeding an increased appetite for outdoor dining.

| EAT & DRINK

The Great Outdoors Owing to the pandemic, al fresco dining is having a moment Al fresco dining has long been a tradition in Palm Beach, where Intracoastal breezes have always paired well with a flavorful branzino. But in the tumultuous spring and summer of 2020, with the coronavirus reportedly spreading 20 times faster indoors than in the open air, outdoor meals evolved from an island luxury to an essential offering—one that has kept cautious patrons fed and saved a number of restaurants from economic ruin. Arguably no Palm Beach mainstay has benefited more from its al fresco model than Renato’s, purveyor of fine Italian cuisine since 1987. From its idyllic and capacious courtyard in Via Mizner, Renato’s is said to offer the most outdoor seating of any restaurant on the island, a claim that holds true even with socialdistancing restrictions. A visit to the restaurant in late August 2020 revealed 14 tables spaced The courtyard at Renato’s the necessary six feet apart—half the capacity of the space in normal times. Despite the virus, and even in an off-season month, by 7:30 most of them were occupied, a testament to Renato’s loyal following. For the average diner, the extra space enhances the coziness, and the romantic ambience, for which Renato’s has long been known. The courtyard is a little slice of Eden punctuated by royal palms and bougainvillea bushes, quaint succulents spilling from baskets attached to trees, and colorful tabletop roses imported from South America. Sparrows flutter on the Mediterranean roof tiles overhead, keeping watch for falling breadstick crumbs and contributing to the evening’s soundtrack. It’s easy to take in every detail, because the dining at Renato’s is slow. Each course is meant to be savored, from the complimentary bread and

22

olives to the artisanal desserts. Start with the local zucchini blossoms, stuffed with ricotta and smoked mozzarella, and served with sun-dried tomato coulis and microbasil, making for a lush, creamy and addictive appetizer. Other highlights include the foie gras in padella, the pillowy duck delicacy collapsing in the mere vicinity of a fork, and sweetly complemented by dried figs, cherries and a blackberry brandy sauce. The Portobello carpaccio, with a base of mushrooms sliced more thinly than this diner had seen anywhere else, bursts with more intricate flavors than the simple topping of arugula, goat cheese and lemon dressing might suggest. For a meatless entrée, the risotto ai funghi is rich and filling; its variety of mushrooms is indeed exotic, and the red wine sauce and white truffle oil make every bite an aromatic delight. It was pasta, more than anything else, that kept Renato’s alive in March and April 2020, when restaurants were forced to close, says Chef Javier Sanchez, who has run Renato’s kitchen for the past 15 years. He eked through the spring with takeout orders delivered from Piccolo Mondo, the adjoining food boutique owned by the same restaurateurs. It seems that in stressful times, comfort food reigns: The aforementioned zucchini blossoms, Sanchez says, also filled to-go boxes with regularity. For enthusiasts of Renato’s, nothing was lost in their curbside orders except, perhaps, the artistic plating of every dish, a facet that’s challenging to replicate in cardboard. Now that Renato’s is booming again, Sanchez’s inner Van Gogh emerges on each plate, the birds are squawking, and the Palm Beach flora is in bloom. At least in this little pocket of paradise, everything is as it should be.

Provisions Visions

THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC may have forced the closure of restaurants beginning in March 2020, but chefs Clay Conley and Zach Bell of the Ember Group did everything but stop cooking. Instead, they decided to turn up the heat in one of their most vibrant kitchens. Conley, the chef behind Palm Beach’s Buccan, quickly launched a nonprofit corporation, Buccan Provisions, to fund the production of nutritious and delicious food for locals suffering the economic fallout of the COVID-19 lockdown. The 6,000-square-foot Grato, Conley’s nouveau Italian spot over the bridge in West Palm Beach, became home base for Buccan Provisions. Conley and Bell outfitted the restaurant with tilt skillets, and added refrigeration and automated food-packing machinery—everything the partners needed to turn out cost-effective meals at high volumes. Buccan Provisions has raised more than a million dollars in funding, allowing the Ember Group to serve 178,000 meals—that’s 10,000 per week—to 20 nonprofit partners in Palm Beach County, which distribute them to those directly in need of hunger relief. Grato is now back open, but the need is still there. Consider a tax-deductible donation at buccanprovisions.org.

Every Wednesday during the busiest season, December through April, local and international visitors have the opportunity to take a 75-minute walking tour of Worth Avenue with historian Rick Rose. Through colorful anecdotes and commentary, the exciting and informative tours explore the origins and character of Worth Avenue, its unique architecture, the historical significance of many of its legendary landmarks and some of its famous residents. Tours begin at 10:30 a.m. in Via Amore at 256 Worth Ave., across from Tiffany & Co. and Chanel. There is free twohour parking along Worth Avenue or at the Apollo Parking lot behind Tiffany & Co. for a small fee. The cost for the tour is $10 per person, a portion of which benefits local charities. At the time of this writing, due to safety concerns regard-

30

ing COVID-19, walking tours are currently suspended until further notice. Reservations are only currently being accepted for groups of 20 or less. To inquire about private tours, reach out to faith@worthavenue.com, call 561/659-6909, or visit worth-avenue.com.

PET PARADE AND CONTEST MARCH 13TH, 2021, 9 A.M.-NOON

Dogs, cats and bunnies, oh my! The furriest of friends are welcome at Worth Avenue’s 28th-annual Pet Parade and Contest at Via Amore. With creative and entertaining categories such as Best Smile, Most Obedient and Best Tail Wagger, owners and their pets have the opportunity to win great prizes and compete for the honor of being one of Palm Beach’s doggy divas. Watch as mistress of ceremonies, Worth Avenue personality Sherry Frankel, introduces each four-legged contestant. Registration starts at 9 a.m., and the contest begins at 10 a.m.

TURTLE TUESDAYS PRESUMABLY: THE SECOND TUESDAY OF THE MONTH, JUNE OCTOBER 2021

Because Palm Beach is one of the largest nesting grounds in the world for sea turtles, Worth Avenue merchants, residents and visitors are welcome on the second Tuesday of the month during nesting season to help collect and remove dangerous debris from the Palm Beaches. The Town of Palm Beach and the Worth Avenue Association provide supplies for the event as part of their community service initiatives. To add your name to the beach cleanup, submit your e-mail address to faith@ worth-avenue.com with BEACH CLEANUP in the subject line.

CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING TBD, DECEMBER 2021

Each Holiday Season, Santa Claus, his elves and performers deck the halls at Worth Avenue’s annual

Christmas Tree Lighting, which marks the unofficial start to Palm Beach’s shopping season. In years past, the Worth Avenue Association and Palm Beach Mayor Gail Coniglio have headlined a festive annual parade down Worth Avenue and a night of holiday cheer. The parade traditionally precedes the fateful flip of a switch that lights the magnificent 40-foot tree. The 2020 iteration of the annual Christmas Tree Lighting was held virtually, and details of the 2021 event are still in the works, so as the holiday season approaches in 2021 be sure to keep your eyes on worth-avenue.com for details about the festivities.

Self-care & Spa-licious The last year has been a test of perseverance, survival, adaptation and scrambling. Which is why taking some time for yourself is the new no-fail beauty regimen. Here are a few ways to take care and take a moment—you deserve it. Eau Spa offers a wide range of massages, facials and beauty treatments, but we like the idea of the hour-long Face Odyssey, described as the “final frontier of facials using space technology of plant stem cells with the highest concentration of proprietary peptides in this universe.” The whole new futuristic you. 100 S. Exploring the Vias Tucked away at intervals along Worth Avenue, the vias evoke European charm

VIA AMORE:

FIND IT: Between Lilly Pulitzer and Arcature Fine Art, 200 Block WHAT NOT TO MISS: “Amore” is Italian for love, which perfectly describes the romantic feel of one of Worth Avenue’s largest vias. Cascading tree branches brush the walls of the via, while sculptures and art lend it its classical character. Wrought iron gates encompass the walls of the first entrance, and statues and fountains line each terrace. Lost? Be on the lookout for the mosaic compass on the ground near Café Via Flora, a quiet café surrounded by trees, flowers and twinkling lights. Additionally, make sure to spot the can’t-miss mural in the via before enjoying a delicious lunch.

VIA NEWSOME:

FIND IT: Adjacent to Only Authentics, 300 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: Small but beautiful, Via Newsome feels like it was beamed from an Italian piazza. A fountain greets you at the entrance, and a reflecting pond leads you to a serene Roman goddess sculpture. If you want to have a secluded picnic or lunch, Via Newsome is the place for you, as it has tables and chairs in every corner.

FIND IT: Between Brown Harris Stevens and Il Papiro, 300 Block WHAT NOT TO MISS: Via Parigi mixes the beauty of South Florida and Europe with Old World architecture and tropical palm trees lining the narrow entrance path, opening to a beautiful Parisian-inspired courtyard. The intricate mosaic staircase is one of Via Parigi’s alluring features, and the many balconies add to its European charm. A fountain is the centerpiece of Via Parigi, surrounded by abstract iron statues of the four seasons.

FIND IT: Adjacent to Mariko, 300 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: Via Roma is small and simple, but it is the perfect spot to relax and stargaze after a shop-till-you-drop afternoon on Worth Avenue. When you reach the end of the thin corridor, be sure to look up at the intricate skylight that shines almost as brightly as the jewelry in the window of H.T. Stuart Jewelers and Mariko.

VIA BICE:

FIND IT: Adjacent to Trillion, 300 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: Via Bice’s blue-andwhite arched walkway leads you to a courtyard with a replica of the Venus de Milo. The via is most notable for Bice, the see-and-be-seen restaurant with authentic Italian cuisine. And you can snag a table outside in its romantic courtyard to fully absorb the via’s vibe.

VIA MIZNER:

FIND IT: Between DEA Luxury Linens and Vilebrequin, 300 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: In this via, you’ll see the faded words “Via Mizner” engraved on a small fountain, testament to the man who once lived there, atop the shops—Addison Mizner himself. One of the most unique aspects of the via is its small graves, home to Mizner’s pet monkey Johnnie Brown, and Laddie, a dog that belonged to a later Mizner apartment owner, Rose Sachs. This via is also home to Renato’s, Worth Avenue’s most romantic restaurant. Sit outside by the glowing lanterns while dining on superb Continental cuisine.

40 VIAS 21 v2.indd 40

VIA DEMARIO:

FIND IT: Between Maus & Hoffman and Ralph Lauren, 300 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: Before you enter the via, look up at the entrance and spot the regal lion head staring down at you and the beautiful architecture and columns surrounding it. Via DeMario is home to a classic Dionysian statue surrounded by exotic orchids—pearl white when in full bloom. Grab a quick bite to eat at the charming Café Delamar.

VIA ENCANTADA:

FIND IT: Between Maje and Sandro, 200 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: This whimsical via is the perfect place for art lovers. At the center of Via Encantada is the Contessa Gallery, a showcase of contemporary art and sculpture. Two spiraling staircases frame the gallery: a bright pink one and a pastel blue one, each a perfect spot for the obligatory selfie. A pink iron rose sculpture adds another note of whimsy to this via.

Concierge

Fits Like a (White) Glove Worth Avenue retailers offer unparalleled concierge services Worth Avenue has long been known for its impeccable attention to personal service. And Michael Maus is a perfect example; part of his family’s company since he was 12 years old, he recalls riding his bike around Palm Beach to hand-deliver orders to customers. That personal touch has remained a signature of Maus & Hoffman’s, as Michael, now in his 30s, helps run the third-generation menswear brand, a staple of classic island luxury for six decades. “A lot of what we do, we did before COVID,” he says. “We’ve been a service-oriented business...We’ve always done local delivery and curbside pickup—much to the chagrin of the town of Palm Beach Police prior to the pandemic! “All of that stems from our familiarity and relationships with clients. Knowing them personally and their buying histories, tastes, sizes, measurements…. A lot of that information on the client has allowed us to serve them better.” Maus says even when the lockdown closed the doors of Maus & Hoffman for part of 2020, customers were “rattling our doors,” seeking custom, hand-tailored shirts, sport coats and trousers. “Consistency is our key; we’re trying to do what we know how to do. That’s our safety blanket,” Maus says. “Even remotely we’re trying to provide that store experience.” Marley Herring, owner and operator of the women’s-wear retailer Marley’s Palm Beach Collection, also offers curbside

concierge 21.indd 45

and in-home deliveries, part of her shop’s increased concierge offerings. She has also enhanced—and personalized—her store’s internet presence. “We provide our clients with FaceTime, or email them photos of what’s new, so that they can shop from the comfort of their home,” Herring says. “We utilize social media and e-blasts to keep our clients up to date on special sales and new merchandise, and follow up with

a personal phone call. We also pride ourselves on special ordering a particular size or style for them with very fast turnaround time. “For those who come to the store to shop for a one-on-one personal experience, we have taken all the necessary precautions to keep our clientele as well as our staff safe and well. We validate parking for the Apollo lot so that our customers can comfortably park without circling around. I have found this service to be extremely appreciated by our clientele. “And, of course, there is always a glass of champagne available for those who wish to linger a little longer.” The Gucci retailer on 150 Worth has also gone above and beyond to ensure that safety and luxury combine for an elevated customer experience. For those who prefer to shop at home, its convenient, revamped website offers a “virtual walk-through” of the store, and its client advisors are on hand to take orders via phone or video chat, and to coordinate a contactless curbside pickup experience. Shoppers interested in experiencing Gucci in-store will discover a fastidiously sanitized environment and the ability to book a private appointment days or weeks in advance—the ultimate way to ensure social distancing. Once a purchase is made, Gucci’s signature packaging and gift-wrapping serve as an iconic reminder of this 100-year-old brand’s staying power.

EVERYONE K NOWS BY NOW that Palm Beach is its own universe of privilege and charm, tropical beauty and the easy restraint of very good manners. Behind those privacy hedges, though, and the manicured estates and historic mansions, a new generation of younger families and school-age kids and active professionals are bubbling up, transforming the island from an Old Guard stronghold to a much more open and lively community. Here’s how to experience Palm Beach and Worth Avenue—in a whole new light.

BEACH DAY

Nothing says “island” better than a day on the beach—swimming, snorkeling and windsurfing in the aquamarine ocean at the foot of Worth Avenue. And for lunchtime you can towel off, shower, jump into your clothes and wander up Worth Avenue to snag a casual meal at Pizza Al Fresco (14 Via Mizner), or Cafe Delamar (Via DeMario, 326 Peruvian Ave., 561/659-3174). And for ice cream? Piccolo Gelato is a sure thing (66 Via Mizner, 561/814-5966).

SUNDAY BRUNCH

Brunch had never been bigger, and it was available all over the island—but since the pandemic, the days of lavish buffets may be over for the time being. Still, this weekend diversion is alive and well, albeit in more modest form at several places. We love Café Boulud at the Brazilian Court (everything from paté to a Cuban sandwich) or the new Henry’s at 229 Royal Poinciana near The Breakers. Henry’s has taken up the slack while the Breakers “reimagines” Sunday brunch, offering lemon ricotta streusel pancakes, fried chicken with red velvet waffles, crab cake Benedict—the works.

Local Hangs

NOAH FECKS

Happy hours and watering holes have been just a memory for most of the past year, but people will return to a glass or two with friends over time. When they do, we like a local’s top three picks:

CAFE BOULUD

The bar at Bice, “tried and true, always a who’s who, A-Z Italian.”

A “lively legendary Palm Beach institution, with a Happy Hour menu that is superb.”

WORTH AVENUE: FUN FINDS

TORY BURCH

Shopping is at the heart of the Worth Avenue experience. Here are a few don’t-miss places to put a little fresh retail fun in your day.

No wonder this designer has a cult following—she’s got it all, and it’s at once sporty, feminine, classic and young, from sandals and sneakers to frilly dresses.

LILLY PULITZER

VINEYARD VINES

No store says Palm Beach more clearly than Lilly, who started it all around 1959 when the then-socialite made a few shifts to disguise the juice stains she’d get at the citrus stand she ran (her husband owned citrus groves). A fashion icon was born, and the flagship store on Worth Avenue is its own homage to that story.

Preppy isn’t dead; it’s just reimagined with a looser style and more contemporary feel, a nod to comfort and a burst of energy. The whole family can update itself at Vineyard Vines.

POOL LABSHOW

This edgy luxury clothing store features a curated collection of cutting-edge European designers.

STUBBS & WOOTTON

Another Palm Beach staple, these embroidered slippers for men and women can be customized any way you like. The hardest part here is trying to leave the store without multiple pairs.

INTERMIX

This collection of designers offers everything from boho to modern, Rag & Bone to Alexander McQueen, Ulla Johnson to Jimmy Choo.

DAY TRIP MUST-HAVES

 We like the Petal shorts from J. McLaughlin—especially if you’ll be biking the island.  The classic Panthere Wild de Cartier sunglasses from Edward Beiner are a PB favorite.  The Cult Gaia Jila Bauble-heel wicker mules from Saks are perfect for a day of shopping on Worth Avenue.  You can’t not buy a Lilly when you visit Worth Avenue; the new Kelia tunic dress is perfect for afternoon adventures.  Sun hats are still a must-have in the tropics; try Eugenia Kim’s Mirabel straw sun hat from Saks.

Nothing’s better than a scenic (and socially distanced!) bike ride, and Palm Beach is the perfect place for that. Skirting the western perimeter of the island is the Lake Trail, a major thoroughfare 100 years ago, but today a great bike and walking path that offers an up-close look at Palm Beach. THE GULF STREAM WATERS

Palm Beach waters are crystal clear to the bottom, with all kinds of marine life, from lemon sharks to sea turtles to parrotfish and pompano. In addition to the public access at the east end of Worth Avenue, you can hit the beach via public easements between private properties all along the coast. Surfers, divers, snorkelers, sunbathers and treasure seekers all have their favorite spots (though finding parking can be tricky). On the north end, the Atlantic surf breaks are best at the east end of Reef Road. The coral reef offshore at The Breakers is teeming with tropical fish, sea turtles and graceful manta rays. Open to the public, America’s only country club for scuba divers is The Scuba Club in West Palm Beach. Its dive masters know all the best dive sites accessible by boat, from wrecks to colorful drift dives, and they always have Oreos and fresh watermelon on hand for midday snacks in between dives (nothing better!). As the sun sets, you and your sweetie can head to Root Trail for a little sunset snuggling and Chardonnay. You can even bring your pooch! Sandy paws are a welcome sight here.

ONLY IN PALM BEACH The Palm Beach lifestyle is part small-town: sand-dusted knees, kids riding bikes, the illusion of a 1960s sitcom. But the looming backdrop of a Georgian mansion tends to alter the vibe, and it becomes clear that, as Fitzgerald famously said, “Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me.”

If you’d like to cover more ground—and get a glimpse at some of the great houses of Palm Beach—take a driving tour of the island with your own private guide through Leslie Diver’s Island Living Tours (561/8687944; islandlivingpb.com). Driving tours range from 90 minutes to 2.5 hours and include a walk through the vias on Worth Avenue. The island’s grand landmarked estates were largely designed by the “Fab Four” of esteemed Palm Beach architects: Addison Mizner, Marion Sims Wyeth, John Volk and Maurice Fatio. Here are some of the houses to look out for:

 The Kennedys’ house at the north end of the island—1095 N. Ocean Blvd.—was once the location of the Kennedy compound or the “Winter White House.”  John Lennon’s house, which he and Yoko bought in 1980, was called El Solano and was designed by Addison Mizner. This landmarked property is at 720 S. Ocean Blvd.  One of Jimmy Buffett’s island houses in the north end, at 309 Garden Road, just sold.  Lilly Pulitzer’s whimsical and lush estate house was called “The Jungle” and was at 710 S. County Road.  The main house of Wilbur Ross, commerce secretary under President Trump, is at 328 on the classic El Vedado Road.  Mar-a-Lago, the private club and winter residence of Donald Trump, once belonged to Marjorie Merriweather Post and is at 1100 S. Ocean Blvd.

Marina Cocher considers St. Barth to be the most beautiful island in the world. “Here, I can rest and recharge my batteries in harmony with nature,” says the French-born world traveler and owner of her brand and namesake boutique, Marina St. Barth, the newest chic addition to Worth Avenue’s world-class fashion landscape. Mother Nature wasn’t always so endearing to Marina, who survived the tsunami in Thailand in December 2004. Turning near tragedy into triumph further inspired Marina’s passion to live life gratefully, gracefully and in magnificent full color. Celebrating nature’s beauty and the exotic cultures savored throughout her lifetime of insatiable wanderlust, Marina’s boutiques are awash in spectacular collections from renowned European labels and new designers “Who I won’t mention,” she teases. “You need to come in and discover for yourself. From my original location in St. Barth to a pop-up store at Pierre’s restaurant in Bridgehampton, to my latest addition at 240 Worth Avenue, Palm Beach, in front of Café Flora, I love seeing my clients surrounded by the beauty that defines my brand and me.” From flowing floral silk dresses to beautiful bags; colorful resort wear, men’s and women’s Italian classic linen to Marina’s own creations of beautiful facial masks, hand sanitizer, organic body products and customized jean jackets, you will find something uniquely yours. “I’m so excited to be in Palm Beach and welcome you to my new boutique!”

The Face of American Works of Art CLAY K. SUROVEK Surovek Gallery

SUROVEK GALLERY 561.832.0422 clay@surovekgallery.com

Clay Surovek’s affinity for fine art developed at an early age, growing up surrounded by his father John’s collection of 19th and 20th century American paintings that filled their home. The senior Surovek is considered an expert in the genre, and Clay has spent the last 23 years expanding his legacy at the family named gallery. “We are among the few galleries in the country that specialize in the early American works through to the 21st-century contemporary art market where there is great interest among collectors and vast availability of work that we are able to access,” Clay explains. One of Clay’s personal favorites in the gallery is a Robert Indiana painting entitled Picasso, which pays homage to Picasso the year he died; a strong example for the artist in vibrant colors. Indiana is also notorious for the iconic LOVE painting, the universal pop art image featured first on postage stamps back in the 60s. American painter and muralist Thomas Hart Benton’s depiction of everyday life is also among Clay’s favorites, and collectors worldwide. “Our clients say that they enjoy browsing through the gallery because we amass such an eclectic array of works. One can find pieces here from as early as circa 1890 to a painting or sculpture from one of our great established living artists that has recently arrived, as well as so many gems in between.”

ACQUA CAFÉ,

ALMOND,

2875 S. OCEAN BLVD., 561/547-0005

207 ROYAL POINCIANA WAY, 561/355-5080

This new-ish restaurant is the brainchild of Arlene Desiderio and Jose Duran, who have built staples such as Renato’s and Pizza Al Fresco. Generously spaced outdoor seating complements the cool-as-the-ocean indoor vibe, with its sleek and wavy cobalt bar and consummate wine list. Sharable plates, salads, seafood and meat options fill the coastal Italian-themed menu, with favorites such as squid ink cavatelli pasta, mushroom truffle risotto and snapper al cartoccio.

All over the map in the best way possible, this artisanal hot spot borrows from French, Italian and ethnic street food cuisines for a menu that is as surprising as it is delightful. Proudly sourcing its whimsical and ever-changing menu from fresh Florida purveyors, Almond’s dishes might include raw-bar staples, an eclectic halal cart, Mediterranean mezze, and potato tostones with pickled green papaya. Daily happy hour runs from 3 to 6, and

there’s even a special Meatless Monday menu for vegans (or the vegan-curious).

BICE, 313 WORTH AVE., 561/835-1600

Bice, which originated in Italy’s fashion capital, Milan, has been a mainstay on the Avenue since the early 1990s, and known for its authentic Italian cuisine and glamorous European (and seasonal Palm Beach elite) clientele. It is one of Palm Beach’s see-andbe-seen spots, with legendary bartenders and a Tuscan menu that is solid gold. People rave

about the butternut squash ravioli, the seafood risotto, the veal scaloppini. But it’s all divine.

THE BREAKERS, 1 S. COUNTY ROAD, 561/655-6611

The iconic Breakers is a destination unto itself (see page 88) with a wide range of dining options, each one excellent. Here is a brief synopsis: • Henry’s is The Breakers’ newest restaurant, a bistro-style neighborhood hideaway awash in singular salads, wines by the glass and nostalgic spins on comfort-food staples: Think pigs in pretzel dough blanket, oysters on the half, and tavern beef Wellington. • HMF is the grand hotel’s sumptuous “cocktail couture” destination featuring hand-crafted and vintage cocktails, a warm and clubby vibe and exquisite small plates (everything from Hong Kong dumplings to SoCal fish tacos). • The Flagler Steakhouse is a richly appointed first-rate chophouse with USDA Prime cuts. • The Seafood Bar is one of The Breakers’ iconic rooms, with spanking fresh seafood, an aquarium bar and jaw-dropping ocean views. • Echo is the hotel’s gourmet pan-Asian restaurant. • The Italian Restaurant is the resort’s family-friendly option with a wide array of Italian favorites. • The Ocean House, overlooking two pools, and The Surf Break are The Breakers’ more casual options, offering light bites, great views, cocktails and a laid-back vibe.

them a bargain at $14. From sushi to California artichokes to slow-roasted baby-back ribs and jumbo lump crab cakes, BrickTop’s is a comfort foodie’s globetrotting catcher’s mitt, studded with menu items that speak to the region. Try the Palm Beach salad, substantial enough to be listed as an entrée, with crab meat, poached shrimp, remoulade, avocado, tomato and chopped egg.

BUCCAN, 350 S. COUNTY ROAD, 561/833-3450

Specializing in what it calls “big flavor, small plates,” this bustling tapas-forward restaurant offers the best of both nightlife worlds: a club-like atmosphere with a techno thump and a quieter area for romantic dining. It is the prime laboratory for chef and James Beard Award semifinalist Clay Conley to indulge in his culinary chemistry experiments, resulting in addictive shareables like the steak tartare with black truffle and egg yolk; the hot dog panini with sauerkraut, Gruyere, mustard and chili, and the out-of-this-world sweet corn

agnolotti with ricotta, bacon and espelette butter. Buccan’s adjacent Sandwich Shop, featuring grab-and-go lunches also curated by Conley, is the island’s premier source for deli takeout.

CAFÉ BOULUD AT THE BRAZILIAN COURT HOTEL, 301 AUSTRALIAN AVE., 561/655-7740

First of all, three words: Chef Daniel Boulud. Born in Lyon, France, this acclaimed chef and his local counterpart, Rick Mace, have an impeccable ability to bring world-class French dishes to the palates of Palm Beachers. And nothing says elegance like the sleek vibe of this dining destination. While menu items change, you can always count on house-made pasta, the freshest seafood and a prix fixe menu that offers three courses for just $32. Known for its brilliant seasonality, the Café Boulud menu is constantly updated, so while there is no “signature dish,” be assured that any item on the menu will keep you coming back for more. Additionally, Le Passage at Café Boulud, the restaurant’s newly remodeled craft cocktail lounge,

offers small plates in a casual atmosphere; and Brazilian Court guests and locals can now partake in contactless curbside service with the “DB Drive-Thru.”

CAFÉ FLORA, 240 WORTH AVE., 561/514-4959

Not in the mood for an eighthour flight to Italy? Step into Café Flora, where at one bite, you’ll forget that you aren’t right in the heart of Tuscany. This café offers authentic twists on Italian fare, such as lobster bruschetta or veal piccata. (There’s even a lighter menu for those watching their weight.) Between the fountains and the beautifully manicured gardens, the surrounding Via Flora is filled with more romance than “The Notebook.” And for the ladies, if you’re not into your date, enjoy the meal and take comfort in the fact that right next door is Jimmy Choo and Hermès.

THE COLONY, 155 HAMMON AVE., 561/655-5430

Dining contemporary American dining influenced by British cuisines as well as European techniques— with an emphasis on local seasonal delicacies. The vibe is bright and lovely, but the cuisine is serious—with everything from oysters Rockefeller and stone crab claws to meatloaf, swordfish and roasted cauliflower. • Café 155 is perfect for the Palm Beacher on the run. Enjoy the café-style atmosphere to have a light breakfast or lunch, or try a grab-and-go selection, perfect for fueling up before a stroll to the nearby beach. • Swifty’s popular pop-up bistro returned this season—a Palm Beach take on the legendary Swifty’s on the upper east side of Manhattan for decades. This chic dining spot offers dinner classics (everything from steaks to oysters) and is complemented by its more casual Swifty’s Pool which offers a deliciously similar menu plus music and occasionaldiversions, like rum tastings.

THE CHESTERFIELD PALM BEACH, 363 COCOANUT ROW, 561/659-5800

• The Courtyard: The Courtyard is the more casual al fresco dining option within this hotel, with an eclectic menu by Chef Gerard Coughlin that offers everything from chicken curry with mango chutney to a shrimp stroganoff— even a beef and pork chili. • The Leopard Lounge & Restaurant is the heart of this hotel, and is known for its over-the-top décor as well as its fine food. For starters, the rails on the bar are secured by the trunks of brass elephants. There are hand-painted murals on the ceilings. The lighting is low—and a little dangerous (in a good way). The menu covers all the bases, from lobster risotto to veal chops, and there are 18 martinis you may choose from, which pretty much says it all.

86

EAU PALM BEACH RESORT & SPA, 100 S. OCEAN BLVD., MANALAPAN, 561/533-6000

• Breeze Ocean Kitchen: If you’re truly looking for the ultimate Florida experience, then dine al fresco at Breeze’s oceanfront terrace, where Executive Sous Chef Matthew Gale has created a menu that infuses flavors of the Caribbean, Latin America and Asia. Treat yourself to the shrimp and chorizo empanadas or the seafood Cobb salad. Personal favorite? The Island Chips, plantains topped with taro root boniato chips, guacamole and charred tomato salsa. Don’t leave without sipping on the Caramel Cream beer float with vanilla ice cream and Due South Caramel Cream Ale. • Temple Orange Mediterranean Kitchen: Enjoy Mediterranean noshes while donning your “resort casual” wear (after all, this is a restaurant that gives you a beachfront view). The extravagant breakfast menu has it all: chilled seafood, inventive egg concoctions, griddle favorites and an indulgent battery of desserts. Sunday Fundays feature house-made bloodies, mimosas from fresh Florida oranges, and a personal favorite, the Veuve Clicquot Rich Champagne Garden. • Angle: Angle, the Resort’s “fine dining” option, offers a farm-tofork menu featuring prime meats and fresh seafood. This isn’t for the faint of heart (or wallet); for example, the $32 lobster tail is listed as a mere “enhancement,” and the $22 lobster mac and cheese with bacon is a “side.” Not to mention the $125 Seafood Tower, which just about empties the Atlantic Ocean.

FOUR SEASONS, 2800 S. OCEAN BLVD., 561/582-2800

The newly revamped Four Seasons Palm Beach offers the

unparalleled French Riviera-inspired Florie’s, with a team led by three-star Michelin chef Mauro Colagreco. The menu is rooted in classics (like the heirloom tomato and peach carpaccio) with a seasonal spin and exquisite execution. Seaway is the resort’s more casual restaurant, with a European terrace vibe, great ocean vistas and signature dishes like the tuna and salmon chirashi. Expect the best from both.

LOLA 41 PALM BEACH, 290 SUNSET AVE., 561/599-5652

The country’s second LoLa 41, following the flagship spot on Nantucket Island, this restaurant features delicacies found along the 41st longitude/latitude parallel—hence its name. This means specialties of the Mediterranean, Western Europe, Japan and the Northeast U.S. appear on its diverse menu. Sushi rolls span from traditional to rarefied (the “Capt’n Jose” includes spicy salmon and cucumber topped with salmon, kiwi, and sesame aji mirin aioli), and other favorites

include Hong Kong chicken lettuce cups, king crab rangoon and hefty brunch selections.

NYY STEAK, IN SEMINOLE CASINO COCONUT CREEK, 5550 N.W. 40TH ST., COCONUT CREEK, 954/935-6699

Visitors from New York who do not mind a short trip south from Palm Beach may have found their new home! Within the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek, NYY not only boasts a mean cut of meat, but it also provides a swanky lounge for gamblers and diners to relax. NYY’s in-house butcher (how many steakhouses can actually boast that?) dry-ages its USDA Prime steak for 21 days; you might view this as the Babe Ruth of steaks. It also has an impressive caviar selection. A fan favorite is NYY’s thick-cut bacon, housecured and smoked, and presented on what looks like a clothesline, so that the maple lacquer drips into the warm cornbread positioned below. Being a Yankees fan for one night is completely worth it here.

PICCOLO GELATO, 66 VIA MIZNER, 561/814-5966

This cozy, indulgent gelato shop tucked discreetly in Via Mizner is a wide draw for Palm Beachers in search of homemade gelato, gelato pops, gelato cakes, espresso and Italian specialty sodas. This is where you go when the grandkids are in town or if you just want to feel like a kid again.

PICCOLO MONDO, 87 VIA MIZNER, 561/655-9599

Piccolo Mondo is elegant Renato’s (next door) casual little sister, serving yummy wraps, sandwiches, salads and pastas in a casual atmosphere. It’s open from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., and is perfect for an after-tennis meal, or lunch on the run—with a decidedly sumptuous spin, of course. This is, after all, Palm Beach.

PIZZA AL FRESCO, 14 VIA MIZNER, 561/832-0032

Pizza al Fresco offers excellent dining (indoors and out) in a romantic via, but without the—ahem—romantic prices normally attached to island dining. You can choose from apps and entrees ranging from lobster bisque, short rib Primavera, roast chicken and several pastas to a battery of pizzas locals swear by—especially the Palm Beach Pizza, with mozzarella, smoked salmon, caviar, red onions, capers and sour cream. This hidden gem is a locals’ favorite.

RENATO’S,

EMILY HAWKES

87 VIA MIZNER, 561/655-9752

Renato’s is arguably the most romantic restaurant in South Florida, with old-fashioned topdrawer service, a tinkling piano, an outdoor patio space that feels positively European and a fine dining menu that is superb. Re-

nato’s has everything your heart desires, from foie gras to lobster risotto and more. Don’t wait for a special occasion; it’s always a special occasion here.

STARBUCKS, 150 WORTH AVE., 561/651-7740

Starbucks had to leap a few hurdles to land on Palm Beach, which is famously anti-franchise, but it is now a popular meeting spot right smack on Worth Avenue in the Esplanade. Caffeine close to both the beach and action central is all you could ask for.

SURFSIDE DINER, 314 S. COUNTY ROAD, 561/659-7495

Possibly the only spot on the island to offer a three-egg omelet with home fries and arugula salad for the un-Palm Beach price of $8.95, Surfside Diner is a beloved locals’ hang. All your favorite breakfast and lunch dishes are here, with ingredients that are impeccably fresh. And like any diner worth its weight in spoon grease, it serves milkshakes from the counter, cakes from coconut to chocolate, and mimosas and bellinis for workfree mornings.

TA-BOO, 221 WORTH AVE., 561/835-3500

Ta-boo is a tradition on the Avenue, and arguably its most well-known culinary landmark, the place to see and be seen for more than 60 years and counting. It is a local favorite for its happy hour, and regulars know to ask for certain tables. Ta-boo stories include the one that says the Bloody Mary was invented here, and that Joe Kennedy had a tryst with Gloria Swanson in the ladies’ room. True or false, it’s that kind of place—full of great gossip, better steaks and a buzz that never really goes away.

Temple Orange is open for breakfast from 7 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. daily and for lunch from noon to 2:30 p.m.

The Colony Palm Beach

THECOLONYPALMBEACH.COM The Colony is another classic Palm Beach address, with a pedigree that dates to the days when the Duke and Duchess of Windsor were winter guests. We love, love, love it, but we have to say that its new iteration, including the exquisite CPB restaurant, brings it to a whole new level. Only steps from Worth Avenue, with a pool shaped like the state of Florida, this is Palm Beach at its Palm Beach-iest.

Palm Beach Historic Inn 365 S. COUNTY ROAD 832-4009, PALMBEACHHISTORICINN.COM In the heart of Palm Beach, within walking distance of shops, restaurants and the beach, the Palm Beach Historic Inn is equipped with modern amenities—yet stays true to its historic charm. Only a short distance away are golf courses, luxury spas, bike trails and other attractions unique to the Palm Beach area. After a long day of exploring the town, relax with an in-room spa treatment.

White Elephant 280 SUNSET AVE. 844/876-1848 Palm Beach’s latest and buzziest hotel has risen from the ca. 1924 building that was once the Bradley Park Hotel as a luxury boutique hotel numbering 13 rooms and 19 suites. Although the orginal footprint and Mediterranean Revival facade was preserved, the space was transformed by Boston-based Elkus Manfredi Architects into a contemporary but elegant space (complete with dipping pool, pool deck and garden area) that is a five-minute walk from the heart of Palm Beach dining, shopping and beach. Some suites boast private rooftop terraces— perfect for entertaining.

Environmentalist Marjory Stoneman Douglas said it best: “There is only one Everglades.” A World Heritage Site and the largest subtropical wilderness in the world, the “River of Grass” is two and a half hours south of Palm Beach and is best accessed by a guided tour. Two-hour tram tours at Shark Valley (305/221-8455) introduce visitors to the wildlife and nature of the Everglades, and include the opportunity to walk up the Shark Valley observation tower for a panoramic view of the heart of the Everglades. At Everglades Safari Park, on Southwest Eighth Street in Miami, sightseers can watch the Alligator Wildlife Nature Show, walk down the Jungle Trail and take a 30-to-40-minute airboat ride through the wetlands. The park is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call 305/226-6923 or visit evergladessafaripark.com for current scheduling and pricing. Marlins Park
