Classic Worth Avenue

W

HAT A YEAR! Worth Avenue has shifted into the national vocabulary through its Palm Beach location—which it now shares with the Winter White House. Its merchants’ association, which brings you this magazine, is celebrating its 70th year this season, and we’ve heard that Santa Claus will arrive at our annual holiday tree lighting by yacht this year for the first time. We’ve seen new businesses open on the Avenue, survived a hurricane, and ramped up our website and social media. Still, the enduring magic of Worth Avenue remains the same. It is a boulevard that changes with the times, but is endowed with the classic grace of its historic past—and the beauty of its Old World architecture. Bougainvillea still tumbles from a high wall, fountains dance in secluded vias, and you can hear the blue waves of the Atlantic Ocean just down the street. Underlying it all is the Avenue’s legacy of customer service, its mix of whimsy and haute couture and its special appeal as an international dining and shopping destination. MITCH HERRING PHOTOGRAPHY

We know we are ever-changing, but we also honor our traditions and our commitment to you, the Worth Avenue visitor. Your delight is our objective—and the hallmark of who we are. We hope you enjoy your visit—and will come back again and again.

Marley Herring President, Worth Avenue Association

PARKING IS PLENTIFUL. Historic Worth Avenue is a street of dreams, and parking is a breeze. Valet parking is available at the Apollo parking lot, just north of Worth Avenue, off Hibiscus Avenue, and at the parking garage, at 150 Worth Ave., just across from the beach. Plentiful two-hour parking spaces are available on Worth Avenue itself, and two-hour metered parking can be found on Peruvian Avenue (one block north of Worth Avenue). If you use one of our parking lots, be sure to ask when you are shopping to have your ticket validated by participating merchants. Please visit our website, worth-avenue.com, for our calendar of events, merchandise and news.

Fresh Takes

Try some of these innovative interpretations of menu favorites from some of Palm Beach’s most exciting chefs

F

OR MOST PEOPLE (like me) who live to eat, we are always looking for something new, something beyond the usual suspects that pop up on every restaurant’s menu. (Brussels sprouts, grilled octopus, burrata, truffle fries—we’re talking about you.) On Palm Beach, I went in search of finding some new spins on a few favorites—because “monotonous” is not a word we should ever use when it comes to dining experiences. Kale still seems to be the hip green these days, so most restaurants use it as a base for at

least one salad option. I find kale to be fairly overwhelming to eat in its raw form, and I certainly don’t want six-pack abs badly enough to suffer over choking it down daily. But Café Boulud’s Grilled Romaine and Kale Salad will convert any hard-headed kale-hater into a believer. Locally sourced from Kai Kai Farm in Jupiter, the baby kale in this salad is far fresher and less heavy than the standard version. A special five-vegetable dressing is made in house, and the fresh roasted vegetables used in this recipe are also ingredients in the salad. The first thing that immediately stands out is Chef Ricky Amezcua

28

that grilled char flavor. With just enough intensity, it makes the dish far more indulgent than you would ever expect in a salad featuring kale. The corn adds some sweetness to the dish and a welcome crunch. The other vegetable standout is the spiced carrots, which are so flavorful and interesting that they could hold their own as a side dish (actually, can someone please make this happen?!). It’s safe to say that this dish truly kales the competition. It wouldn’t be Palm Beach without a tuna tartare dish on Every. Single. Menu. Think about it: When was the last time a flavor profile of an ahi tuna dish truly knocked you off your feet? Tuna dishes seem to be more uniform than the eyebrows on Instagram beauty bloggers, so it’s tough to stand out. Chef Ricky Amezcua of Jové Kitchen + Bar understands that, and he decided to make a change by infusing the tuna with flavors of different cuisines. The gingered tuna tartare is a unique marriage of Asian and Italian flavors, with the former coming from the ginger flavor of the tuna, and the latter provided by the sweet pepper coulis that accompanies it. Chef Ricky aimed to create a dish where the tuna would “speak for itself,” so while most tuna tartare dishes say “yawn,” this one is yelling “YOLO!” On first bite, your palate is immediately hit with a kick: the ginger flavor, although not too overpowering, gives the dish exactly what it needs to stand out. The tuna is topped with arugula, which surprisingly brought out even more of the ginger for me. The coulis is bold, flavorful and, although unexpected, tastes right at home with the gingery taste of the tuna. The dish is served with lavash crackers, but I would skip it; the other flavors stand on their own without it (who needs extra carbs anyways, says no one ever). If you’re tired of the usual, these are two dishes that are definitely game-changers in the dining world. Take two doses, and soon enough

Endless Summer, Palm Beach-style Even the cocktails are beautiful at Ta-boó

T

BY JILL PAVLOV

HE LEGENDARY

American bistro and bar Ta-boó claims itself the harbinger of the arrival of social-season residents, purporting that “if you were not seen at Ta-boó, you were not seen in town.” However, what I enjoyed most about my first visit to this famed Palm Beach icon was the lack of being “seen,” namely at its dimly lit but ultra-trendy bar. Ta-boó is the kind of place that you wander in and immediately feel swankier, which sets the tone for one of the musts at Taboo: an expertly mixed craft cocktail. Upon my arrival, I was immediately greeted by friendly bartender Matt, who recommended Ta-boó’s most popular libation, the Endless Summer. The ingredients accompanying this Tito’s Vodka-based drink are just as refreshing as the name would suggest: watermelon liqueur, basil, lime and cranberry. This cocktail succeeds where other tropical cocktails in our region fail, in that although it is very refreshing and uses fruit ingredients, it is, thankfully, not overly sweet. As a girl who’s gone on more first dates than I’d like to admit, I’ve learned a thing or two about men, and that is that they are terrified of “girly” drinks. But despite how the Endless Summer may appear, this drink is for everyone (well, not minors…). The key to this drink is the balance. The watermelon liqueur gives it that cool, refreshing element, and the basil pulls it all together by adding just the right amount of savory to rescue the drink from a potential sugary demise. And social butterflies rejoice: This drink is a true conversation starter! As soon as it arrived, I had other patrons asking me what I had just ordered. Let’s be honest: Craft cocktails are great, but isn’t half the reason we come to a bar for the ambience and camaraderie? Try indulging in an Endless Summer, no matter what the season.

MEET WOODY MICHLEB by Louise V.

Woody, thank you for talking to us today, first, you relocated your family to south Florida, and chose Palm Beach as your salon’s home, what drew you to the island? Woody: My wife and I love the area, obviously, it feels like a piece of Europe when you walk around by the salon on Worth Avenue, also we have some Guests that live in the area or visit annually for the winter, so it made perfect sense. You are well-known in your industry for being in the public eye a lot! Tell me about that? Woody: I have been blessed with a great career, I have styled hair for and on television, I teach and perform on stage, as well as I style numerous celebrities, I also lead the hair looks for 30-40 designers every season for Fashion Week. For the Spring Summer 2018 collections in New York we worked with 41 designers on both their runway shows and their look books. So you help design the trends that we all follow and dream of! Woody: Yes we do. I believe there is never one style or hair color in fashion, but many styles depending on what suits the individual person, or designer. We work with some designers that are very elegant and feminine in their collections, and we work with designers who can be extremely couture. I would like to say that we create something for everyone when we plan the hairstyles for the runway!

Who was recently?

your

favorite

look

Woody: We did a fun couture ponytail with Elie Madi’s evening wear collection. I love his designs; they are worn by celebrities like Katy Perry, Mel B, Nikki Minaj, Beyonce and Britney Spears. We got metal rings and white hair extensions to make an extended ponytail on the runway, it was a hit with everyone! You feel strongly about supporting your community; tell me about your charity affiliations? Woody: For decades, as an individual and as a business, have supported charity as much as possible. In Canada we raised over $40,000 for Autistic Families, and also did many fundraisers for other charities such as Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto. I have 4 children, one of which was born very sick and we spent months at Sick Kids, so helping children’s charities is always close to my heart. We also are constantly donating to charity events. Since we opened in Palm Beach we have donated more than $30,000 in gift cards, silent auction items, raffle items and VIP bag gifts to local events. We also support with hair services for models, entertainers or Board Members of the organizations.

Woody Michleb, (pictured left) is a well known celebrity hairstylist and salon owner in Palm Beach

One of your biggest fans is the media sensation Madeline Stuart, tell me about her? Woody: Madeline Stuart (Maddie) is amazing. She was the first model to walk a major Fashion runway with Downs Syndrome, and since then has traveled the world modeling for various events and raising awareness for people with disabilities. She proves that anyone can achieve anything, regardless of the hardships they face and she inspires me. When we work together she won’t let anyone else touch her hair, I am her favorite! Last year she launched her own fashion line, it may not be the most high-end line but I strongly support what she stands for and who she is, so love working on her collections. Let’s get back to talking about hair! What do you love about being a stylist? Woody: I love making people feel good, but also I love helping people. We strive to be a salon that is less about “one visit and one style”, and more of a longterm relationship. We like to make a plan with our Guests so they can achieve “dream hair”! We put a plan in place that continues over a few months, and takes our Guests from good to amazing in terms of hair and scalp health, and hair goals. We use microscopes to conduct scalp analysis, we work with a Doctor to recommend PRP for skin restoration and hair growth, and we offer treatment plans to address specific concerns. We also take the same approach with hair color. We want our guests hair to look and feel its best and plan out the goals to get there together.

That makes me want to come to see you right away! What makes you different to the other salons in Palm Beach, or South Florida? Woody: I would like to say we are approachable and a fun environment where everyone feels welcome and comfortable. We believe you should feel relaxed and at ease when you arrive for a reservation with us, not somewhere people feel intimidated by because it is in Palm Beach. This year we will be holding classes for Guests on how to take care of their own hair, and seminars on overall wellness and health focused around hair, skin and beauty. We also take hygiene very seriously, with individually sealed sanitized hair brushes for every blow dry, and strict hygiene rules in the salon, even down to color bowls and brushes being sanitized. It is not something Guests usually think of, but when they see what we do they are pleasantly surprised and appreciate the extra mile! How can we find you? Woody: We are located on the corner of Hibiscus and Peruvian, just one block from Worth Avenue and across the street from the Worth Avenue parking lot!

You can visit Woody and his team year-round at their beautiful Palm Beach Salon!

A sentence in the New York Times in the 70’s became my justification for buying beautiful dresses when my daughter was born in 1983. “Clever women have discovered that antique clothes have a magnificent cut and handdone details not often found in clothes these days.” My daughter turned the collection into Balatro Vintage Gallery.

It started with decluttering closets, and then it became decluttering all parts of the home. These days, we want to simplify our home décor but keep it stylish and functional. It’s kind of like the decluttering idea: You want to put things that have meaning in your home. ” SHIFT TO NEUTRAL “So many of my projects are going to a more neutral background or using natural color linens and just adding accent colors. If the background is subtler, the room can grow with you and your tastes at the moment.” ENVIRONMENTAL ENGAGEMENT “It’s important to get in touch with the environment and the space so that the space says something about you. You have to feel the space and what it demands. ... Fill the space with pieces that make sense with it instead of clutter it with ... furnishings.” EVERY TIME AND EVERY DAY “It’s important that the space works for you every day. Your home is your castle, a place where we find peace when we remove ourselves from the rest of the world. ... When I design bedrooms, I want the space to coddle you, to rock you to sleep. If you understand the room, then it starts to come to life.”

Fitness Makeover

Trends, much like seasons, come and go. HIIT, functional training, barre and even vegan gyms top the charts for new workout programs to try this year.

“A

LOT OF TRENDY

stuff is high-intensity interval training, so you’re getting cardio and resistance training at the same time,” says Craig Campbell, of Palm Beach Fitness. He runs the gym with his wife, Aprill, and maintains the belief that boring, same-day-everyday fitness routines are gone for good. Functional training, which centers on balance, flexibility, movement and strength, is more popular than ever. Typical moves include box jumps, lunges, squats and pushups, to name a few. Barre, a low-impact, high-results training program, works the entire body through Pilates and ballet movements. By adding light weights, it gives individuals an extra challenge without compromising joints. It’s a great way to strengthen and stretch muscles simultaneously. SuperFit Gym, owned by Julian and Yvonne Gibson-Serrette, is focused on a combination of fitness and food. The bodybuilding couple started SuperFit in 2010 to help clients train effectively and eat plant-based diets. The owners continue to support healthy eating through organizations such as The Advocacy Vegan Society and Vegan Outreach. If none of the trendy workouts sound like something you want to try, stick to what you love instead. Old favorites like CrossFit, boxing and group classes are still helping people achieve their health and wellness goals. Boxing can burn 1,000 calories per session and decrease stress levels. CrossFit offers a great community training aspect, as do group classes and boot camps. And don’t forget about riding the waves on a stand-up paddleboard (S.U.P.) yoga session at Eau Spa in Manalapan. Eau Spa provides

38

private S.U.P. yoga lessons year-round, with a handful of S.U.P. yoga classes during the summer. According to the spa, S.U.P. yoga has great physical and mental benefits, including weight loss, stress relief and a sense of balance. Private lessons are by appointment only, and package pricing is available. For more information, call 561/540-4960, visit eauspa. com or email concierge@eauspa.com. 5 Tips for Clean Eating Although “clean eating” has been a buzzword phrase for a few years, its definition and principles are sometimes confused with diets, like Paleo or Whole30. Unlike these short-term eating plans, clean eating is a lifestyle change, not limited to a couple weeks or a month. With a few simple tweaks, it’s easy to follow the clean lifestyle and create better eating (and buying) habits.

1 LOAD UP ON FRUITS AND VEGETABLES.

Be sure to shop the perimeter at Publix and stick to whole, raw produce, such as carrots, apples, strawberries, tomatoes, etc. Anything in its original, fresh-from-the-farm condition is fair game. Pick fresh lettuce and spinach over their bagged counterparts when possible.

CHOOSE MINIMALLY PROCESSED GRAINS. Similar to produce, minimally processed grains receive little treatment from harvest to packaging. They provide more antioxidants and fiber than white flour counterparts. Oats, quinoa and wild rice all fall into this category.

3

STAY AWAY FROM SUGAR AND SALT. Sugar has been shown to have addictive symptoms, which makes individuals crave it more. Many processed foods have salt in abundance, which homemade versions lack or have in smaller doses. Flavor dishes with citrus, herbs and spices instead.

4 LIMIT PROCESSED FOODS. Resist the urge to

walk through the chip and cereal isles. Don’t even bat an eye at them. Processed foods lack important nutrients and stimulate the overproduction of dopamine, which can lead to unhealthy cravings and overeating.

5 DRINK PLENTY OF WATER. It’s been said

often enough, but it’s worth repeating. Men’s and women’s bodies are made up of 50 to 60 percent water. Women should aim to drink 9 cups of water daily, while men should try to drink 13 cups of water each day. You’ll stay hydrated and flush out any toxins in your body.

We chatted with famed hair stylist Woody Michleb from his eponymous salon on Worth Avenue for styling tips to make your tresses look their best. BEYOND HAIR Fashion is what suits the individual. It’s what makes you feel good and what gives you energy and a great overall feeling. At our studio, our stylists understand it’s not just about the hair. It’s also about everything else. We utilize the Golden Ratio: the measurement of the face, hair and body and everything else around us to create a hairstyle. Subconsciously, we look at something to see if it is pleasant to the eye, and to do that, you have to look at all aspects of the individual. After you analyze that, you can take the hairstyle and color to sculpture it to the individual person. THE RIGHT PRODUCTS ARE KEY If you’re not receiving the right style and hair care, it’ll cost more to maintain your look. One way to properly maintain your look is by using the right styling products. A lot of hair products are made of polymers or plastics that are used to enhance shelf life. Using these products is basically the equivalent of washing your hair with plastic. In the end, it’s doing more harm than good for your hair. HAIR AT HOME Our professional stylists will have you looking gorgeous by the end of your appointment, but what about when they are not with you? What about all those hours when you’re away from the salon? To keep your hair in perfect order, we’ve created at-home consultation parties that show you how to maintain your hairstyle on days when you’re not sitting in our stylist’s chair. Clients are invited to bring friends, and we’ll provide the hors d’oeuvres and hair-care expertise. A TREND THAT WILL NEVER GO OUT OF STYLE People should always look for trends that suit them and [that are] easy for them to maintain. One trend that will always stay true to me is having a healthy scalp and hair. It doesn’t matter what clothes you’re wearing; having a healthy scalp and hair will always look good on whatever outfit you have on.

On the Avenue... CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING Nov. 28, 2017, 6-8 p.m.

Santa Claus, his elves and performers are decking the halls a little early this holiday season at Worth Avenue’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting, which marks the unofficial start to Palm Beach’s shopping season. Join the Worth Avenue Association and Palm Beach Mayor Gail Coniglio for the annual parade down Worth Avenue and a night of holiday cheer. The parade begins at 6 p.m., but the real magic will be at 6:29 p.m., when the flip of a switch lights the magnificent 40-foot tree. Be sure to get there early for a chance to get your little ones on Santa’s lap.

HISTORIC WALKING TOURS OF WORTH AVENUE Dec. 6, 2017 through April 25, 2018

Every Wednesday during the busiest season, November through April, local and international visitors have the opportunity to take an hour-long walking tour of Worth Avenue with historian Rick Rose. Through colorful anecdotes and commentary, the exciting and informative tours explore the origins and character of Worth Avenue, its unique architecture, the historical significance of many of its legendary landmarks and some of its famous residents. Tours begin at 11 a.m. in Via Amore (formerly Via Gucci) at 256 Worth Ave., across from Tiffany & Co. and Chanel.

There is free two-hour parking along Worth Avenue or at the Apollo Parking lot behind Tiffany & Co. for a small fee. The cost for the tour is $10 per person, a portion of which benefits local charities.

FORK TO FASHION Feb. 21, 2018, 5-8 p.m.

Stroll along the 200 block of Worth Avenue for a glamorous (and international!) evening of food and fashion from Paris, Milan, London and New York.

PET PARADE AND CONTEST March 10, 2018, 9:30 a.m.-noon

The furriest of friends are welcome at Worth Avenue’s 23rd annual Pet Parade and Contest. With categories such as Best Smile, Most Obedient and Best Tail Wagger, owners and their pets have the opportunity to win great prizes and compete for the honor of being one of Palm Beach’s doggy divas. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m., and the contest begins at 10 a.m.

TURTLE TUESDAYS The second Tuesday of the month (during turtle nesting season), June through October 2018

Worth Avenue’s Secret Courtyards Discover the world of Worth Avenue’s charming vias BY MEGA N K E A R N E Y

VIA AMORE:

FIND IT: Between St. John Boutique and Island Company, 200 Block WHAT NOT TO MISS: Via Amore is filled with art and has something eye-catching everywhere you look. Wrought iron gates encompass the entrance walls, and sculptures and fountains line each terrace. Lost? Be on the lookout for the mosaic compass on the ground near Café Via Flora, a quiet café surrounded by trees, flowers and twinkling lights. Additionally, make sure to spot the can’t-miss mural in the via before enjoying a delicious lunch.

VIA MARIO:

FIND IT: Between Maus and Hoffman and Ralph Lauren, 300 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: If you’re looking for a true Italian feel, visit Via Mario. A fountain greets you at the entrance of the via, and a reflecting pond lines the entryway and leads you to another eye-catching sculpture. If you want to have a secluded picnic or lunch, Via Mario is the place for you as it has tables and chairs in every corner.

VIA PARIGI:

FIND IT: Between Brown Harris Stevens and Il Papiro, 300 Block WHAT NOT TO MISS: Although the corridor that makes up the via may feel tiny at first, Via Parigi is anything but. Adorned by a trellis and intricate mosaic staircases, it opens up into a large outdoor terrace. A fountain is the centerpiece of Via Parigi, and abstract iron statues of the four seasons surround it. This is also home to Stubbs and Wootton, one of Palm Beach’s trademark shoe salons, famous for its embroidered slippers.

VIA ROMA:

FIND IT: Between H.T. Stuart Jewelers and Mariko, 300 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: Via Roma may seem small at first glance, but when you reach the end of the thin corridor, be sure to look up at the intricate skylight that shines almost as brightly as the jewelry in the window of H.T. Stuart Jewelers and Mariko.

VIA BICE:

FIND IT: Between Peter Millar and Trillion, 300 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: A blue-and-white arched walkway leads you to a courtyard and replica of Venus de Milo in Via Bice. The via is most notable for Bice, a restaurant with authentic Italian cuisine and romantic outdoor dining in a spacious courtyard. From an extensive pasta selection to desserts like tiramisu and sorbet, Bice offers a great lunch or dinner on the avenue.

VIA MIZNER:

FIND IT: Between Select Fine Art and Style Paris, 300 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: One of the most unique aspects of the via is its small graves, home to Mizner’s pet monkey Johnnie Brown, and Laddie, a dog that belonged to a later Mizner owner, Rose Sachs. As you walk around, if you look closely enough, you’ll see the faded words “Via Mizner” engraved into a small fountain, reminding you exactly how much history encompasses this via.

VIA DEMARIO

FIND IT: Between Courage B and East Coast Jewels Jewelers, 300 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: Before you enter the via, look up at the entrance and spot the regal lion head staring down at you and the beautiful architecture and columns surrounding it. Via DeMario is home to a classic statue surrounded by exotic orchids—pearl white when in full bloom.

VIA ENCANTADA:

FIND IT: Between Maje and Sandro, 200 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: This whimsical via has yellow walls and stark white chandeliers, with pink and blue spiral staircases adding splashes of color. A pink iron rose is showcased within the via, adding to its playful ambience.

Palm B By Marie Speed & John Thomason

O

n a map, it’s a small barrier island with the easternmost town in Florida, only 16 miles long. But its influence extends more than 100 years in the past and across the globe. This is Palm Beach, the winter playground for the American aristocracy and the rich from around the world. It’s the place where a Bentley is your second car and your 10,000-square-foot house is a “cottage.” You have one whole room dedicated to eveningwear and a year-round army of gardeners who keep the privacy hedges tall, trimmed and impenetrable. It is a place of winter White Houses and deb balls and bougainvillea and charity boards. It is a place of dreams and tradition, whimsy and wannabes. And there is no other town like it in the world.

Who Lives Here?

P

alm Beach, with one of the richest zip codes in the country, has a population of around 10,500, which swells to 40,000 during the winter social season— and therein lies a great social division: Townies vs. Snowbirds. Females outnumber males, the racial makeup is 97 percent white, and the median age for everyone is more than 68 years old. Census numbers from a few years ago place the median household income at around $125,000 (the median Florida figure is about half of that) and the median house value at more than $1 million. In 2003, The Robb Report named Palm Beach as the “best place to live.” But numbers don’t really show the full picture. Palm Beach is home to the megawealthy of America and a fair number of household names. Houses routinely sell for double-digit millions, and the population is slightly less seasonal, with the Old Guard stereotype starting to erode as wealthy younger families with more money than pedigree take up residence. Charity work is very big here, and balls and benefits are a way of life, from the very formal Red Cross Ball (ladies still wear tiaras) to the gala for the Palm Beach Zoo. And about a million more. Despite its social grandstanding, longtime residents will tell you the town has a real sense of community and a culture that has evolved since its incarnation in the 1920s as a resort enclave.

Dos & Don’ts

A Little History

T

he Palm Beach story started more than a century ago when railroad magnate Henry Flagler extended a railway south and built the Royal Poinciana Hotel at its terminus—in what is now Palm Beach. The raggedy tropical island was thereby ordained a winter retreat for America’s Golden Age society A-list. The railway continued south after that, but this was the start of a legacy shared by few other towns in America—one of privilege and exclusivity, money and manners. In those early days, Worth Avenue was a sleepy little outpost with little more than an alligator concession, a far cry from today’s designer boutiques and luxe restaurants and bumper-tobumper luxury cars. Over the years, as Palm Beach solidified its status as one of the country’s social capitals, an insular community emerged, marked by grand mansions and galas, celebrities and industrialists. These days, the community still retains that cachet although in a decidedly younger, more egalitarian style.

Dos 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Do write a thank-you note. Always. Do register for bridal gifts at Mary Mahoney. Do avoid publicity. And photographers. Do attend the galas your friends chair. Do arrive on time. Especially for dinner parties. Do listen more than you talk (and never interrupt). Do keep a guest room perfectly outfitted, complete with helpful phone numbers and books. 8. Do subscribe to the Social Register. Even though you know it doesn’t matter, of course.

Don’ts

1. Don’t ask people what they do. 2. Don’t jog without wearing a shirt. 3. Don’t order “another” drink; ask that your cocktail be refreshed. 4. Don’t wear a watch after 6 p.m. if you are a woman. 5. Don’t actually kiss anyone on the cheek; air kiss above the cheek. Also, hugs are implied, not given. 6. Don’t compliment someone on an item he or she is wearing and then ask what it cost or where it is from. 7. Don’t steal anyone else’s help. 8. Don’t call a private club for membership information; members are only added via referrals.

CHILD’S PLAY: Best Places to Take the Kids Playgrounds, fields and tennis courts are all at the Town of Palm Beach’s Seaview Recreation Center. (340 Seaview Ave., 838-5485) The beach at Phipps Ocean Park features grassy shade, picnic facilities and a playground, all on the Atlantic Ocean. (2145 S. Ocean Blvd., 838-5400) The Palm Beach County History Museum is housed in the restored 1916 Courthouse in downtown West Palm Beach. Exhibitions feature county history, along with profiles of the people and events that made the area. (300 N. Dixie Highway, 832-4164)

The Look

THERE’S A PALM BEACH LOOK, of course, regardless of what anyone says. The Palm Beach look is studiously casual, with bright colors, a cashmere sweater loosely knotted around the neck, bare legs, good cheekbones. Everyone is very thin, slightly Kennedy-esque, and blonde is standard. Men drift toward an aging preppie look, with a little Italian tailoring thrown in for good measure. Loafers by Gucci.

Must-have Palm Beach accessories For women: 1. Lilly Pulitzer shift 2. Gold Jack Rogers sandals 3. Stubbs & Wootton needlepoint slippers 4. Orange Birken bag by Hermès; summer bag by Louis Vuitton

1. Brooks Brothers notch-lapel tuxedo with a flat-front trouser 2. Brioni navy tropical weight wool blazer, two vents (Cuban Yacht Club insignia optional) 3. Cream gabardine trousers

5. Alhambra necklace from Van Cleef & Arpels

4. Linen drawstring summer trousers

The Legends

Five people who made Palm Beach what it is today

Henry Flagler

E.M. Brelsford

Henry Flagler (pictured left) was a powerful industrialist and founder of Standard Oil who also started the Florida East Coast Railway to open up Florida for development. After he built a magnificent resort hotel in St. Augustine, he began extending the railway south to what is now West Palm Beach and Palm Beach, breaking ground on the Royal Poinciana Hotel in 1893. It took 1,000 workmen to complete what was then the largest wooden-structured hotel in the world. Not to be outdone, he would go on to build the Breakers and Whitehall, among other Palm Beach institutions. The latter, pictured above, came about after his third wife, Mary Lily Kenan, remarked that she wanted to live in a marble mansion. (You could say she gilded him into it.) Today, Flagler is regarded as the founding father of Palm Beach, a distinction he would share with Miami, which he also put on the map with his railroad.

E.M. Brelsford, the first postmaster of Palm Beach, named the town after the coconut palms that grew near Lake Worth. The trees were planted following the wreck of the Providencia, a ship from Trinidad, bound for Spain, which ran aground on Palm Beach in 1878. It carried 20,000 coconuts’ worth of cargo, which pioneers sold to locals for two and a half cents apiece.

PA L M B E AC H ’ S FA M O U S FAC E S In addition to heavy hitters like Rod Stewart, Rush Limbaugh, Howard Stern and Donald Trump, Palm Beach has been home to the following notable residents.

Douglas Fairbanks Jr. actor

Addison Mizner

Marjorie Joseph Kennedy Merriweather Post and family

George Hamilton actor

Butch Trucks The dramatic Mediterranean architecture common to parts of Worth Avenue and Palm Beach can be traced to Addison Mizner, an eccentric architect ca. 1918 who found his way to the nascent Palm Beach, teamed up with sewing machine heir Paris Singer and designed his own version of paradise. His first project was the Everglades Club, followed by the extravagant oceanfront estate El Mirasol (The Sunflower), home of Philadelphia stock market titan Edward T. Stotesbury and his wife, Eva, Palm Beach’s first family of society at the time. Mizner went on to build more estates for the rich and famous as well as shops and apartments along Worth Avenue. In 1925 and 1926 he created Via Mizner and Via Parigi, two of the Avenue’s most charming courtyards.

Marjorie Merriweather Post was the General Foods heiress (once married to E.F. Hutton) who reigned as Palm Beach’s society queen in the 1920s and 1930s. She and Hutton built the lavish estate Mar-a-Lago in the late 1920s, which later became a private club and is today a presidential getaway. Mrs. Post was famous for her parties at Mar-a-Lago, including her signature square dances.

In the early 1930s, bootlegger Joseph P. Kennedy purchased the Palm Beach home La Guerida for $115,000, about a third of its market value. It would become the Kennedy compound for generations, a place where both Joseph and his son John would indulge their sexual dalliances—Joseph with film starlet Gloria Swanson, and John, much later, with a roster of mistresses that was rumored to be in the hundreds. Only when he was convalescing from back surgery, in the mid-1950s, did JFK keep his libido in check. While he was recuperating at La Guerida, his wife arranged for mutual friend Grace Kelly to show up in a sexy nurse outfit and administer a feeding. John didn’t even notice her. As Murray Weiss and Bill Hoffman report it in Palm Beach Babylon, Kelly lamented, “I must be losing it.”

The Lifestyle The Palm Beach lifestyle is tough to pin down. It’s part small-town: sand-dusted knees, kids riding bikes, the illusion of a 1960s sitcom. But the looming backdrop of a Georgian mansion tends to alter the vibe, and it becomes clear that, as Fitzgerald famously said, “Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me.” Here’s what we know:

Preferred Address

There’s no bad address in Palm Beach, but oceanfront is primo, naturally.

Schools

Palm Beach Day Academy, Rosarian Academy or Discovery Dayschool (Miss Porter’s and Exeter later on)

Most Coveted Club Membership

The Everglades Club is still Palm Beach’s most exclusive private club, but the Bath and Tennis Club is where most families hang out. For men only, Coconuts (famous for its annual Coconuts Ball) is the golden ticket.

Wedding Reception Venue

The Venetian Ballroom at The Breakers; for the second marriage, the Gold Room. And if you are one of the anointed: The Orange Garden at the Everglades Club.

Party Planner Everyone Hires

Events), with offices in D.C. and New York. Event planner to the stars, Rafanelli has done the Red Cross Ball and the Bal Poudré at the Flagler; he is to society parties what Peter Duchin once was to society orchestras.

Where You Get Flowers for the Home

Tom Mathieu of Tom Mathieu & Company provides weekly flowers to many Palm Beach estates, at a cost that can range from $2,500 to $6,000 a week by some estimates.

Hair Care

Philippe Barr of Frédéric Fekkai Salon is the hairdresser of the hour these days. And that expensive and distinctive Champagne blonde color? Trade secret.

Restaurant Reservation

Table No. 1—the window table—at Ta-boo is still the most coveted seat on The Avenue, but HMF at The Breakers is action central to spot who’s who in town, post-party revelers and local personalities.

American Red Cross International Ball This white-tie-and-tiara evening may be a wee bit stuffy (some would say pretentious), but it has its share of glamour, along with visiting ambassadors and dignitaries. Red gowns are highly favored. Cancer Alliance of Health and Hope “Shop the Day Away” luncheon This luncheon features a silent auction, a celebrity keynote speaker and more—and benefits cancer patients and their families during their treatment periods, easing their financial burdens. Norton Museum of Art Gala This night at the museum is how you show your more cultured side—and it’s always well done.

Society of the Four Arts

South Florida Has it All

Florida’s Gold Coast has something for everyone, from major sports teams to wild animals roaming free to stately gilded mansions and museums. Get out there! BY JACKIE SMITH AND JOHN THOMASON

Arts & Culture FLAGLER MUSEUM, PALM BEACH

The development of Florida’s economy and status as a tourist destination can be attributed to Henry Flagler, who built the Florida East Coast Railway from Jacksonville to Key West. Flagler and his wife Mary Lily Kenan spent their winters in the Beaux-Arts mansion Whitehall, known today as the Flagler Museum, a beautiful, well-preserved national historic landmark. Visitors to the museum can take self-guided brochure tours, self-guided smart device tours or docent-led tours of the estate and Henry Flagler’s private railcar, built in 1886 for his personal use. Visitors can also download the free Flagler Museum app on their smartphones prior to their visit to learn more about the history of the museum as well as have access to audio tours, an orientation video, events calendar and more. Those who visit on Sunday

90

at 3:30 p.m. have the pleasure of hearing Whitehall’s weekly organ demonstration, and throughout the year, the Flagler hosts a rousing bluegrass concert, a chamber music series, a lecture series and art exhibitions evoking aspects of the Gilded Age. At the corner of Cocoanut Row and Whitehall Way, the museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Regular admission is $18 for adults, $10 for kids ages 13 to 17, $3 for children ages 6 to 12, and free for children 6 and younger. Call 561/655-2833 or visit flaglermuseum.us.

SOCIETY OF THE FOUR ARTS, PALM BEACH

For more than 80 years, the Society of the Four Arts has presented top-shelf cultural programming to the Palm Beach community. As its name suggests, its multi-building campus houses a quartet of disciplines, with

hundreds of events filling its concert hall, gallery space, cinema and library each year. The Four Arts’ signature O’Keeffe Speaker Series, running Tuesday afternoons from January to April, welcomes nationally renowned figures from the realms of politics, media, arts and entertainment. Its concert series features the best in orchestral, chamber and jazz music on Wednesday nights and some Sunday afternoons in season, and its film series features foreign and domestic titles fresh off the arthouse circuit on select Fridays. All year round, visitors can enjoy the Philip Hulitar Sculpture Garden and Four Arts Botanical Garden. All programs are open to the public, with admission reasonably priced. Most buildings in the Society, at 2 Four Arts Plaza, are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, with select hours on Saturday. The sculpture garden and botanical garden are open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 561/655-7226 or visit fourarts.org.

NORTON MUSEUM OF ART, WEST PALM BEACH

One of the Southeast’s premier art museums, the Norton Museum of Art has been a cultural fixture in West Palm Beach since 1941. Founded by Ralph Hubbard Norton and wife Elizabeth Calhoun Norton, the museum is known for the quality of its permanent collection, traveling exhibitions and innovative educational programs. The internationally renowned permanent collection features more than 7,000 works, concentrated in European, American, Chinese and contemporary art and photography. The museum also offers a year-round schedule of special exhibitions. A great time to visit is during the Norton’s weekly Art After Dark festivities. On Thursdays, the museum remains open until 9 p.m., offering live music, drink specials, gallery talks and craft activities. The Norton is currently undergoing an exciting expansion and renovation project that will transform the museum into the “New Norton” by early 2019. In the meantime, admission is free to all visitors. The Norton Museum of Art, at 1451 S. Olive Ave., is closed on Mondays and on major holidays. tio—can wander the grounds and admire Ann’s artwork, including the nine monumental sculptures she left behind, eight in brick and one in granite. Seasonally changing exhibitions feature sculptures from contemporary and classic artists nestled among Ann’s work. In addition to her love for sculpting, Ann had a passion for wildlife, and she wanted her work to be placed among plants and animals. The luscious garden holds native plants as well as more than 300 rare palms, and welcomes birds and other animals that seasonally migrate to the area. On 2051 S. Flagler Drive, admission to the gardens and home is $15 for adults, $10 for seniors, $7 for children ages 5 and older, and free for members; however, the gardens are closed during the month of August. Most recently, the Science Center unveiled 18 holes of miniature golf on its Conversation Course, a Jim Fazio- and Jack Nicklaus-designed layout that combines ecological education with short-game challenges. It joins such new developments as a 5,000-square-foot Hall of Discovery with 100 new or revamped interactive exhibits, an upgraded theater and a new science laboratory. Additional activities include a winding science trail where visitors can dig for fossils and pan for gems, a butterfly garden, a collection of rare space artifacts and a nanotechnology exhibit. At 4801 Dreher Trail N., the Science Center is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. General admission is $15 for adults, $13 for seniors (60-plus years) and $11 for children between the ages of 3 and 12. Admission to the planetarium is $5 extra for adults and seniors and $3 extra for children. Call 561/832-1988 or visit sfsciencecenter.org.

Opened in 1967, the zoo sprawls over 600 acres in Palm Beach County and is home to more than 900 animals living in large, natural exhibits. In Safari World, the walk-through area of the park, visitors can explore a plethora of bird, reptile and mammal exhibits, and spot animals like Caribbean flamingoes, spider monkeys and giraffes. For $2, you can feed the latter their breakfast. There is also a petting zoo that holds goats and sheep, which guests can feed for $1 or brush for no additional fee. PALM BEACH ZOO, WEST PALM BEACH

With more than 190 species and 550 animals on display, the Palm Beach Zoo at Dreher Park features unique creatures unseen anywhere else in the region, from black bears to komodo dragons to giant anteaters. In keeping with its mission to propagate endangered species, the zoo participates in more than 50 Species Survival Plans, helping to manage threatened animals such as the red kangaroo, Malayan tiger and Indian pygmy goose. Most recently, the zoo debuted Fiona, an orphaned jaguar rescued from Panama, and announced the births of a red-crowned crane and five Perdido Key beach mice. The zoo frequently plays host to family festivals, children’s educational programming, holiday breakfasts, keeper talks and wildlife shows. Visitors can also partake in close-up “experiences” with sloths, capybaras, tortoises, koalas, giant anteaters and flamingoes— feeding, bathing and taking photographs with the animals for $35 per person.

At 1301 Summit Blvd., the Palm Beach Zoo is open daily (except Thanksgiving and Christmas) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Regular admission is $19.95 for adults, $17.95 for seniors and $14.95 for children ages 3 to 12. Children 2 and younger enter for free. Call 561/547-9453 or visit palmbeachzoo.org.

RAPIDS WATER PARK, WEST PALM BEACH

Rapids, South Florida’s premier family waterpark, features 30 acres of attractions. Thrill-seeking visitors can hurtle down one of 35 water slides, including Big Thunder, on which riders fly 20 mph down a 45-degree drop. In 2011, the World Waterpark Association and the International Association of Amusement Parks & Attractions named Rapids Racer “Best Ride.” The park also includes a 25,000-square-foot wave pool and quartermile lazy river. One of its wettest attractions, the FlowRider, moves 30,000 gallons of water per minute to create a simulated wave system for riders to body-board over a fixed surface at 35 mph.

The Palm Beach Zoo

The park, at 6566 N. Military Trail, is open year-round, but hours vary seasonally. Regular admission is $42.99 per person Monday through Friday and $47.99 per person on weekends. Children 2 and younger are admitted free. Parking is $10 per vehicle. Call 561/848-6272 or visit rapidswaterpark.com.

THE EVERGLADES & AIRBOAT RIDES

Environmentalist Marjory Stoneman Douglas said it best: “There is only one Everglades.” A World Heritage Site and the largest subtropical wilderness in the world, the “River of Grass” is two and a half hours south of Palm Beach and is best accessed by a guided tour. Two-hour tram tours at Shark Valley (305/221-8455) introduce visitors to the wildlife and nature of the Everglades, and include the opportunity to walk up the Shark Valley observation tower for a panoramic view of the heart of the Everglades. At Everglades Safari Park, on Southwest Eighth Street in Miami, sightseers can watch the Alligator Wildlife Nature Show, walk down the Jungle Trail and take a 30-to-40-minute airboat ride through the wetlands. The park is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call 305/226-6923 or visit evergladessafaripark.com.

The Garden Club

The green-thumbed members of this Palm Beach institution have been beautifying the town for nine decades. BY JOHN THOMASON

P

ALM BEACH HAS always been a cultivated town, in more ways than one. Entering its landmark 90th year in 2018, the Garden Club of Palm Beach has been synonymous with the island’s growth and beautification since its inception. From helping develop Palm Beach’s very first town plan to financing its three blocks of iconic coconut palms on Royal Palm Way to creating the vertical Worth Avenue garden known as the Living Wall, the Garden Club’s members have acted as pioneers and watchdogs, advocates and educators. As the Worth Avenue Association’s charity of choice for 2017/2018, the Garden Club’s service will be recognized all season. The Association’s historical walking tours of Palm Beach will benefit the Garden Club, which supports civic projects and maintains the Society of the Four Arts Botanical Garden, a free community resource. “The Board of Directors selected the Garden Club as our charity of choice this year as a way of showing appreciation for the amazing job they do for Worth Avenue and the town of Palm Beach,” says Marley Herring, president of the Worth Avenue Association. “The Garden Club has been instrumental in the beautification of Worth Avenue, and many of its members are longtime patrons of our shops and restaurants.” “We have a very worthwhile mission,” says Sue Strickland, immediate past president, and a member for nearly 15 years. “It’s education, conservation and love of horticulture. ” “This is the only club I’ve ever belonged to where people actually enjoy doing the work,” adds current president Elizabeth Thebault, a more than 20-year member. The Four Arts Botanical Garden is a verdant sanctuary divided into nine demonstration gardens with sculptures, burbling fountains and ponds—and a towering sausage tree. You’ll sees the aromatic ylang-ylang flower, which became the basis for Chanel No. 5; and Florida’s The Four Arts state tree, the cabbage palm. Designated Botanical Garden Historical & Specimen trees, such as the 104

Chinese Garden’s ilex, are protected by the town, and require a certified arborist to trim them. “It’s a great place to come often, because it changes so much,” Strickland says. The Garden Club’s 125 members include some heritage members, but all active members sit on two committees, and from November through April, they’re required to spend a morning each week tending the garden. As Thebault says, “everybody works.” “A criterion for the membership is a love of gardening, so it’s not just, ‘I want to join the garden club because I want to hear a lecture,’” adds Strickland. That said, the annual lecture is a generous perk. Last year, the Garden Club hosted Martha Stewart, and previous speakers have included interior designer Charlotte Moss and garden architect Daniel Ost. On Feb. 28, 2018, the Garden Club will welcome Emma Manners, Duchess of Rutland. Other popular Garden Club events include its House and Garden Tour, of some of the island’s most outstanding private gardens, which raises funds for the club in March. Each Arbor Day, it lectures schoolchildren on the importance of horticulture, then assists them in planting a tree in Bradley Park. The club’s other community donations include its annual Pine Jog Environmental Education Center scholarship, which funds the tuition for one of the school’s graduate students. The Garden Club’s efforts to keep the town green have faced inevitable impediments from developers. As members described it in the Four Arts Garden guidebook in 1985, “Notwithstanding all our efforts, we have had to suffer helplessly as more and more of our island’s trees and native growth disappear forever beneath the juggernaut called ‘Bulldozer.’ … Nevertheless, we still believe our Town to be more beautiful than most!” Few would disagree with this statement, a testament to the Garden Club’s dedication. “[The Club has] this history of a shared common goal to improve the community,” Strickland says. “We credit the people who came before us for making it a wonderful organization.”
