Welcome

President’s Letter

In a world that is getting progressively more automated, with people plugged into all manner of devices, Worth Avenue represents a welcome alternative. This historic street of graceful architecture and climbing bougainvillea, intimate vias and shaded courtyards, is an experience as much as a place. It is a champagne break at Ta-boo’s cozy bar, or a short walk on the beach before the sun goes down. It is window shopping and courtyard dining, wild parrots and fine art. In short, there is only one street that offers visitors the feeling they are worlds away from ordinary life—and that is Worth Avenue. I’d like to welcome you to the Worth Avenue experience, and invite you to share in its warmth and its long history of personal service and community. For more than 100 years, service has been our gold standard, and it’s a value we hold dear to this day. We also want you to feel at home on our beautiful street, and we’ll do anything we can to answer your questions, point you to a great lunch spot, or give you some neighborly pointers (we’re good at that). Most of all, we want you to know that we value your patronage as much as we cherish this charming street. There is only one Worth Avenue—and we know you are going to love it. So let us share our world with you on this visit—and all the ones that will follow.

Ashley Berry President, Worth Avenue Association

PARKING IS PLENTIFUL. Historic Worth Avenue is a street of dreams, and parking is a breeze. Valet parking is available at the Apollo parking lot, just north of Worth Avenue, off Hibiscus Avenue, and at the parking garage, at 150 Worth Ave., just across from the beach. Plentiful two-hour parking spaces are available on Worth Avenue itself, and two-hour metered parking can be found on Peruvian Avenue (one block north of Worth Avenue). If you use one of our parking lots, be sure to ask when you are shopping to have your ticket validated by participating merchants. Please visit our website, worthavenue.com, for our calendar of events, merchandise and news.

Season’s Best

This Palm Beach restaurant epitomizes the year’s culinary trends. It’s been said that necessity is the mother of invention. But what about reinvention? What drives that, specifically in the food industry? If you ask Jose Gamez, executive chef at the Four Seasons Palm Beach, it’s the desire to give customers an incredible dining experience. Helming the kitchens of the island’s only Five-Star, Five-Diamond resort, Gamez has seen restaurant trends come and go, but the one constant is a chef’s ability to adapt to new demands. “Guests are actually pushing chefs and restaurateurs to think outside the box to find new experiences that will eventually become trends,” Gamez says. “We feel a push to give diners a reason to come back to dine at a specific restaurant not just once more, but several times over.” And he should know. Gamez recently collaborated with the three Michelin-star chef Mauro Colagreco to present the resort’s crown jewel, Florie’s, whose menus combine Florida-centric fare with the spirit of the Mediterranean and farm-fresh produce and ingredients. (Fun fact: The resort’s on-site garden provides much of the flowers and herbs, such as thyme and rosemary, found in the restaurant’s food and drinks, Gamez says.) Along with Colagreco, whose Mirazur restaurant in the south of France was recently named the world’s best restaurant, Gamez sought to give Palm Beach residents and travelers a beyond-amazing dining option, including live-fire cooking from a stone hearth oven, yakitori grill and spit-fire roasting. Despite the Mediterranean leanings at Florie’s, it was important to Gamez and Colagreco to give what the former calls a distinctly Florida “sense of place,” a trend that’s quickly picking up speed. Chefs are taking the farm-to-table trend—a hot movement

for the past decade or so—to the next level by offering dining experiences that are specific to the exact region, whether it’s peaches in Georgia or potatoes in Peru or oranges in Florida. “At Florie’s, we’re playing up the fact that we’re situated in Florida,” Gamez says. “Part of that includes showcasing citrus fruits and other tropical-climate fruits and vegetables. Especially since our restaurants are inside a hotel with travelers from all over the world, it’s important that our guests feel as if they are at their destination. Our job at our restaurants is to show that, yes, this Florida-focused dish is why you need to come to this city and eat at this table.” That reasoning has resulted in dishes such as a local burrata and wild Florida red grouper, both featuring vibrant citrus accoutrements. Craft cocktails also receive the local treatment, including the Dress to Impress, a gin-based drink highlighted by house-made lavender bitters. Gamez says the chefs at both Florie’s and Seaway—the property’s seafood-inspired café—adopt another recent food trend: visiting guests at their tables. It bucks the decades-ago formality of having chefs who were confined to the kitchen, restricted to a “Wizard of Oz”-like platform to perform their craft behind the curtain. Now, the veil has been lifted, giving diners and chefs the opportunity to interact with one another. “We enjoy taking the opportunity to touch the tables, especially our local guests,” Gamez says. “When we go to the table, we have the chance to tell diners the backstory behind the cuisine and dish, and even how certain foods and flavors can play against each other. With the locals, we have more opportunities to connect with them and continue our dialogue over various meals. We can even answer questions diners have about their dish.” Gamez also says

Acqua Cafe

Jose Gamez

another exciting movement in the culinary world has nothing to do with taste. For him, the opportunity to treat dishes like a piece of artwork, to make food not only palatable but also a visual feast, taps into the artistic side of a chef. Sometimes a meeting among members of the culinary team sounds more like a conversation about a painting rather than a dish as they discuss how color schemes work in combination with each other. “Cooking is an art,” Gamez says. “It’s not just about flavors; it’s taking that picture from our head of how a dish should look and making it even more beautiful in real life. That’s a challenge we really enjoy.” For what it matters, so do we.

HERE ON THE ISLAND, new neighbors can be spotted a mile away, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with this addition. Acqua Cafe, a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant that focuses on seafood, made its debut this fall (2875 S. Ocean Blvd.). It’s the brainchild of Arlene Desiderio and Jose Duran, the mother-and-son duo who have built staples such as Renato’s and Pizza Al Fresco. Among several highlights, the restaurant includes a raw bar consisting of oysters, shellfish, lobsters and more. In addition, the eclectic menu of Mediterranean-infused fare uses organic ingredients from local farms and sources. “We chose Mediterranean because it gave us a lot of space to work with different ingredients from a vast collection of regions,” says Anthony Theocaropoulos, the corporate chef of Al Fresco Hospitality Group. But for its signature drink, we say it’s all Italian. Meet Acqua’s Negroni.

GOING COASTAL Finding the perfect home furnishings doesn’t have to be difficult. From bohochic homes to beachy vibes, these hand-picked selections are perfect for any house.

This dining area for a large extended active family opens to the pool and is as easy as it is casual. We love the farmhouse table and wash-and-wear chairs, but its most striking feature is its stunning Cuban-inspired cement tile, which hearkens back to Old Florida as well as Florida’s longstanding romance with Havana.

A Florentine Leather Artisan Atelier . . . just arrived on Worth Avenue. ags, blouses, skirts, dresses — designer Jennifer Tattanelli does it all and has brought her customizable designs to Palm Beach, a place which she is also now calling home after years of splitting her life between winters in Florence, Italy and summers in the Hamptons. Jennifer Tattanelli has created her own success through expanding the family business on her father’s side. But fashion was not always in her plan. Originally, she wanted to follow in her greatgrandfather pathologist Dr. James Ewing’s footsteps and majored in both mathematics and physics in college. However, the sewing machine she received when she was 12-years-old seemed to seal her fate in fashion. Growing up she was inspired by watching her great grandmother in Italy weave

infinity bags from boxes and watch her grandfather create leather goods. “I always knew I wanted to work with people and make them feel good so if I was going into medical and research and help,” said Tattanelli. “I like to make people feel good, see them smile and be happy. Through fashion, I don’t just design for fashion per say, I really design it with you and craft it for you. I like to be in contact with my client. I work with them because I really do custom made pieces for women and men. I work with your body. You’re not supposed to fit into my clothes. My clothes are supposed to fit you.” Along with Tattanelli’s customized approach to fashion, her designs offer comfort without having to compromise style.

Vias |

BY EMILY CHAIET

Exploring the Vias Tucked away at intervals along Worth Avenue, the vias evoke European charm VIA AMORE:

FIND IT: Between St. John Boutique and Island Company, 200 Block WHAT NOT TO MISS: “Amore” is Italian for love, which perfectly describes the romantic feel of one of Worth Avenue’s largest vias. Cascading tree branches brush the walls of the via, while sculptures and art lend it its classical character. Wrought iron gates encompass the walls of the first entrance, and statues and fountains line each terrace. Lost? Be on the lookout for the mosaic compass on the ground near Café Via Flora, a quiet café surrounded by trees, flowers and twinkling lights. Additionally, make sure to spot the can’t-miss mural in the via before enjoying a delicious lunch.

VIA MARIO:

FIND IT: Between Maus & Hoffman and Ralph Lauren, 300 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: Small but beautiful, Via Mario feels like it was beamed from an Italian piazza. A fountain greets you at the entrance, and a reflecting pond leads you to a serene Roman goddess sculpture. If you want to have a secluded picnic or lunch, Via Mario is the place for you, as it has tables and chairs in every corner.

VIA PARIGI:

FIND IT: Between Brown Harris Stevens and Il Papiro, 300 Block WHAT NOT TO MISS: Via Parigi mixes the beauty of South Florida and Europe with Old World architecture and tropical palm trees lining the narrow entrance path,

opening to a beautiful Parisian-inspired courtyard. The intricate mosaic staircase is one of Via Parigi’s alluring features, and the many balconies add to its European charm. A fountain is the centerpiece of Via Parigi, surrounded by abstract iron statues of the four seasons.

VIA ROMA:

FIND IT: Between H.T. Stuart Jewelers and Mariko, 300 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: Via Roma is small and simple, but it is the perfect spot to relax and stargaze after a shop-till-youdrop afternoon on Worth Avenue. When you reach the end of the thin corridor, be sure to look up at the intricate skylight that shines almost as brightly as the jewelry in the window of H.T. Stuart Jewelers and Mariko.

VIA BICE:

FIND IT: Between Peter Millar and Trillion, 300 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: Via Bice’s blue-and-

white arched walkway leads you to a courtyard with a replica of the Venus de Milo. The via is most notable for Bice, the see-and-be-seen restaurant with authentic Italian cuisine. And you can snag a table outside in its romantic courtyard to fully absorb the via’s vibe.

VIA MIZNER:

FIND IT: Between Select Fine Art and Style Paris, 300 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: As you walk around this via, you’ll see the faded words “Via Mizner” engraved into a small fountain, a testament to the man who once lived there, atop the shops—Addison Mizner himself. One of the most unique aspects of the via is its small graves, home to Mizner’s pet monkey Johnnie Brown, and Laddie, a dog that belonged to a later Mizner apartment owner, Rose Sachs. While this via certainly has historical significance, it is also home to Renato’s, Worth Avenue’s most romantic restaurant. Sit outside by the glowing lanterns and string lights while dining on superb Continental cuisine.

VIA NEWSOME

FIND IT: Between Courage B and East Coast Jewelry, 300 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: Before you enter the via, look up at the entrance and spot the regal lion head staring down at you and the beautiful architecture and columns surrounding it. Via Newsome is home to a classic Dionysian statue surrounded by exotic orchids—pearl white when in full bloom. Grab a quick bite to eat at the charming Café Delamar.

VIA ENCANTADA:

FIND IT: Between Maje and Sandro, 200 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: This whimsical via is the perfect place for art lovers. At the center of Via Encantada is the Contessa Gallery, a showcase of contemporary art and sculpture. Two spiraling staircases frame the gallery: a bright pink one and a pastel blue one, each a perfect spot for the obligatory selfie. A pink iron rose sculpture adds another note of whimsy to this via.

Your guide to a magical island of luxury and legend The story of Palm Beach privilege began more than 100 years ago, and it’s never wavered from that theme—an island with miles of dazzling coastline, enclaves of opulent estates, and a rarefied tropical beauty that is at once wild and perfectly landscaped. And despite all this one-percent-er panache, it is also a place that is enjoyed by thousands of visitors every year who flock to its resorts, its restaurants, its fabulous shopping. Palm Beach is a world unto itself, a portal to a modern-day Gatsby dream.

Here’s how to start exploring.

country’s premier winter resort. He next built the Palm Beach Inn, later known as The Breakers, which burned down twice, in 1903 and 1925. In 1926, it was rebuilt, and it still stands today, one of the most beautiful and famous resorts in the world—and still owned by the Flagler family.

ALLIGATOR JOE’S

OK, so you can’t actually see this one, but you have to know about it. It’s so Florida. At the turn of the century, an enterprising man named Warren Frazee operated what might be the area’s first tourist attraction: One hundred alligators and crocodiles in a pen on a property that is now the Everglades Club golf course—a quirky start to the la-la land Palm Beach became.

EVERGLADES CLUB

WHITEHALL

The island’s only museum is Whitehall, built by Standard Oil tycoon and father of Palm Beach, Henry Flagler, in 1901 for his wife, Mary Lily Kenan. In 1925, it was sold by his heirs and used as an elegant hotel residence. In 1959, Jean Flagler Matthews purchased the property, and opened it as the Flagler Museum off Cocoanut Row.

The Everglades Club, at the westernmost end of Worth Avenue, was envisioned initially in 1918 as a WWI wounded soldier hospital called the Touchstone Convalescent Club. Although its demographic may not be too far from that description today, it became the Everglades Club, Palm Beach’s most exclusive private club.

ADDISON MIZNER & PALM BEACH

Addison Mizner, a talented architect/ roustabout, came to Palm Beach in 1918 determined to recreate the distinctive MoorishMediterranean-style architecture he’d seen on his travels to Central America. He dove into Palm Beach, starting with the Everglades Club, followed by grand Palm Beach estates for some of the island’s most influential residents, including the Phipps and the Vanderbilts. Mizner is also credited with Worth Avenue; in 1925 and 1926 he created Via Mizner and Via Parigi, two of the eight charming side streets that would come to define this world-famous street’s special charm.

FY I Two Palm Beach buildings, The Breakers & The Biltmore, were hospitals during World War II. In the 1920s, there was a “dress censor” on the beach to make sure no skin was showing. The Cartier panther [designed in 1917] was inspired by Florida panthers that roamed Palm Beach in the 1900s.

The Breakers

THE BREAKERS

Another landmark of Henry Flagler’s (credited with bringing the world to Florida via the railroad he built) is The Breakers, which helped create the initial notion of Palm Beach itself. It all started when Flagler opened the Royal Poinciana Hotel in the winter of 1894 and claimed the island as the

PAN’S GARDEN

Children and adults alike will revel in exploring the botanicals at Pan’s Garden (311 Peruvian Ave.), where the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach has collected more than 300 native Florida plants.

WILD PARROTS

No, you are not imagining those junglemovie sounds. A flock of about 150 greencheeked Amazon parrots, along with a few related varieties, have been flying around the island for about 70 years, from its northernmost end to their nesting areas near The Breakers on South County Road. No one is certain where they came from, with theories ranging from released pets to a quarantined colony set loose during a hurricane.

BEACH

Palm Beach waters are crystal clear to the bottom, with all kinds of marine life, from lemon sharks to sea turtles to parrotfish and pompano. In addition to the public access at the east end of Worth Avenue, you can hit the beach via public easements between private properties all along the coast. Surfers, divers, snorkelers, sunbathers and treasure seekers all have their favorite spots (though finding parking can be tricky).

THE PHILIP HULITAR SCULPTURE GARDEN AND THE FOUR ARTS BOTANICAL GARDENS

The Philip Hulitar Sculpture Garden and the Four Arts Botanical Gardens, on the corner of Royal Palm Way and Cocoanut Row, are both associated with the Society of the Four Arts, a revered nonprofit cultural organization founded in 1936 to fill the cultural gap on the island. Visitors can enjoy the sculpture and fountains or wander through the gardens; both are a great respite from shopping, and celebrate the tropical yet decorous ambience of Palm Beach.

FYI The Atlantic surf breaks are best at the east end of Reef Road.

This impossibly chic and exclusive salon in the Brazilian Court Hotel is one of the namesake salons of Parisborn stylist legend Frédéric Fekkai. The website states, “Everyone who sits in his chair emerges as a force of pure allure.” Top that.

The Gilded Age Italian Renaissance icon, The Breakers, is a must-stop on the Palm Beach tour— starting with a stroll through the ornate lobby with its soaring hand-painted ceilings and then perhaps to the Seafood Bar for a drink and a dazzling ocean view. HMF at the Breakers offers true glamour in a retro cocktail setting, and there are lovely shops as well, including Lilly Pulitzer and Guerlain.

WORTH AVENUE Worth Avenue is arguably the most exclusive shopping district in the world, and the commercial heartbeat of Palm Beach. Its growth was an indirect offshoot of The Everglades Club, whose weekly luncheon fashion shows served as a launch pad for designers like Valentino, Blass, Givenchy, Madam Greis and Pauline Trigère—the beginning of Worth Avenue’s rich fashion history. In 1938, the Worth Avenue Association was formed, incorporating in 1961. WORTH AVENUE

House

Hunting Vintage photo, the Kennedy compound

The Kennedys he house at the north end of the island—1095 North Ocean Boulevard— was once the location of the Kennedy compound or the “Winter White House.” John Fitzgerald Kennedy and other members of the large Kennedy clan were the “first family” of Palm Beach, from the time of the presidency to the scandalous Kennedy-Smith rape case in 1991. Joseph P. Kennedy bought the Mizner-designed house in 1933, and it was where the family celebrated Jack’s 1960 presidential win, and spent many winter vacations. The Kennedys attended Sunday mass at St. Edward Catholic Church, and Teddy and Rose were photographed shopping on Worth Avenue. When Joe Kennedy died in 1969, Teddy took over the estate. By the 1970s and ‘80s, Rose Kennedy’s visits became infrequent, and the house began its long downhill slide. By 1991, when Patrick Kennedy Smith was accused of rape at the compound, the days of the dynasty were over. The house was sold in 1995 for $4.9 million.

DIY: THE LAKE TRAIL Skirting the western perimeter of the island is the Lake Trail, a major thoroughfare 100 years ago, but today a great bike and walking path that offers an up-close look at Palm Beach. These are your points of interest: ♦ Begin at the North Bridge. E.R. Bradley’s casino once occupied the corner; all that remains on the site now is a fireplace. ♦ The Biltmore once housed exclusive shops near the Beaux Arts Fashion Center complex, which was the shopping center of the day. ♦ The houses on Hi-Mount Road, built on what is known as the coral cut, north of Country Club Drive, and the famous iron grate long rumored by children to house a witch. ♦ The shingle-styled private home at 549 N. Lake Way was built in 1894 and served as Palm Beach’s first church until 1925 when the Gothic-style Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea opened on South County Road. ♦ An 1897 house called “The Vicarage” at 475 N. Lake Way was once home to Bethesda’s vicar and later to the swashbuckling Douglas Fairbanks Jr. ♦ Duck’s Nest (561 N. Lake Way), built in 1891, was thought to have been assembled in two parts and shipped by barge from New York. ♦ All that is left at the northernmost end of the island is a broad dock, once home to Annie’s Tackle Shop and Dock, torn down in the early 1980s, a mainstay for boaters and residents alike.

Things To Do

South Florida: Where to go, what to do With Palm Beach as your launch pad, you can plan day trips throughout South Florida, from flower power in West Palm to free-roaming wildebeest west of town. FLAGLER MUSEUM, PALM BEACH

The development of Florida’s economy and status as a tourist destination can be attributed to Henry Flagler, who built the Florida East Coast Railway from Jacksonville to Key West. Flagler and his wife Mary Lily Kenan spent their winters in the Beaux-Arts mansion Whitehall, known today as the Flagler Museum, a beautiful, well-preserved national historic landmark. Visitors to the museum can take selfguided brochure tours, self-guided smart device tours or docent-led tours of the estate and Henry Flagler’s private railcar, built in 1886 for his personal use. Visitors can also download the free Flagler Museum app on their smartphones prior to their visit to learn more about the history of the museum as well as have access to audio tours, an orientation video, events calendar and more. Those who visit on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. have the pleasure of hearing Whitehall’s weekly organ demonstration, and throughout the year, the Flagler hosts a rousing bluegrass concert, a chamber music series, a lecture series and art exhibitions evoking aspects of the Gilded Age. At the corner of Cocoanut Row and Whitehall Way, the museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Regular admission is $18 for adults, $10 for kids ages 13 to 17, $3 for children ages 6 to 12, and free for children 6 and younger. Worth Avenue Recommends There is no lack of delicious dining when it comes to Worth Avenue and Palm Beach Palm Beach isn’t just a destination; it’s an experience. When you’re in Palm Beach, you’re not here just to live—you’re here to live life to the fullest. Part of that is exploring all the tantalizing restaurants this island has to offer. Whether you’re a full-time or part-time resident, or visiting on vacation, the Palm Beach vibe is all about relaxing. So we’ve done your thinking for you: Visit our choices for the best of the best restaurants, and

90

do what you came here for—eat, drink and be merry.

ACQUA CAFÉ 2875 S. OCEAN BLVD., PALM BEACH The eagerly anticipated Acqua Cafe, a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant that focuses on seafood, is making its debut this fall. The brainchild of Arlene Desiderio and Jose Duran, who have built staples such as Renato’s and Pizza Al Fresco, is bound to be a hit on the

island with a raw bar and an eclectic menu of Mediterranean-infused fare based on organic ingredients from local farms and sources.

BICE 313 WORTH AVE., PALM BEACH, 561/835-1600 Bice, which originated in Italy’s fashion capital, Milan, has been a mainstay on the Avenue since the early 1990s, and known for its authentic Italian cuisine and glamorous European (and sea-

sonal Palm Beach elite) clientele. It is one of Palm Beach’s see-andbe-seen spots, with legendary bartenders and a Tuscan menu that is solid gold. People rave about the butternut squash ravioli, the seafood risotto, the veal scaloppini. But it’s all divine.

THE BREAKERS 1 S. COUNTY ROAD, 561/655-6611 The iconic Breakers is a destination unto itself (see page 94), with a wide range of dining op-

tions, each one excellent. Here is a brief synopsis:  HMF is the grand hotel’s sumptuous “cocktail couture” destination featuring hand-crafted and vintage cocktails, a warm and clubby vibe and exquisite small plates (everything from duck bao buns to wild boar empanaditas).  The Flagler Steakhouse is a richly appointed first-rate chophouse with USDA Prime cuts.  The Seafood Bar is one of The Breakers’ iconic rooms, with spanking fresh seafood, an aquarium bar and jaw-dropping ocean views.  Echo is the hotel’s gourmet pan-Asian restaurant.  The Italian Restaurant is the resort’s family-friendly option with a wide array of Italian favorites.  The Ocean House, overlooking two pools, and The Surf Break are The Breakers’ more casual options, offering light bites, great views, cocktails and a laid-back vibe.

updated, so while there is no “signature dish,” be assured that any item on the menu will keep you coming back for more.

CAFÉ VIA FLORA 240 WORTH AVE., 561/514-4959 Not in the mood for an eight-hour flight to Italy? Step into Café Via Flora, where at one bite, you’ll forget that you aren’t right in the heart of Tuscany. This café offers authentic twists on Italian fare, such as lobster bruschetta or pompano piccata. (There’s even a lighter menu for those watching their weight.) Between the fountains and the beautifully manicured gardens, Via Flora is filled with more romance than “The Notebook.” And for the ladies, if you’re not into your date, enjoy the meal and take comfort in the fact that right next door is Jimmy Choo and Hermès.

THE CHESTERFIELD PALM BEACH 363 COCOANUT ROW, 561/659-5800

The Courtyard: The Courtyard is the more casual al fresco dining option within this hotel, with an eclectic menu by Chef Gerard Coughlin that offers everything from chicken curry with mango chutney to a shrimp stroganoff—even a beef and pork chili.  The Leopard Lounge & Restaurant is the heart of this hotel, and is known for its over-the-top décor as well as its fine food. For starters, the rails on the bar are secured by the trunks of brass elephants. There are hand-painted murals on the ceilings. The lighting is low—and a little dangerous (in a good way). The menu covers all the bases, from sea bass to veal chops, and there are 18 martinis you may choose from, which pretty much says it all. 

THE COLONY 155 HAMMON AVE., 561/655-5430  CPB at The Colony serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and

offers refined yet approachable contemporary American dining influenced by British cuisines as well as European techniques—with an emphasis on local seasonal delicacies. Try the imaginative rotating chef’s tasting menu. The vibe is bright and lovely, but the cuisine is serious—with everything from veal sweetbreads and caviar to gnocchi, risotto and roasted cauliflower. A delight.  Café 155 is another dining option at The Colony that is perfect for the Palm Beacher on the run. Enjoy the café-style atmosphere to have a light breakfast or lunch, or make use of the grab-and-go selections, perfect for fueling up before a stroll to the nearby beach.  Bimini Bar The Bimini Bar is your tropical laid-back hangout outdoors (try the hot dog—we mean it!) with casual fare. An island motif on The Colony’s patio is better than being there, in our opinion. Cafe Boulud

301 AUSTRALIAN AVE., 561/655-7740 First of all, three words: Chef Daniel Boulud. Born in Lyon, France, this acclaimed chef and his local counterpart, Rick Mace, have an impeccable ability to bring world-class French dishes to the palates of Palm Beachers. And nothing says elegance like the sleek vibe of this dining destination. While menu items change, you can always count on house-made pasta, the freshest seafood and a prix fixe menu that offers three courses for just $32 (as of this printing, the prix menu featured gazpacho Andalou, a duck confit with caramelized apples, and vanilla crème brûlée). Known for its brilliant seasonality, the Café Boulud menu is constantly WORTH AVENUE

Dining EAU PALM BEACH RESORT & SPA 100 S. OCEAN BLVD., MANALAPAN, 561/533-6000  Breeze Ocean Kitchen: If you’re truly looking for the ultimate Florida experience, then dine al fresco at Breeze’s oceanfront terrace, which has a stellar view as well as a refereshing menu that infuses flavors of the Caribbean, Latin America and Asia. So treat yourself to the red chili pork with mango-pineapple salsa or the seafood Cobb salad. Personal favorite? The Island Chips, plantains topped with taro root boniato chips, guacamole and charred tomato salsa. Don’t leave without sipping on the blood orange float made with Temple Orange sorbet and Copperpoint Blood Orange Wit.  Temple Orange Mediterranean Kitchen: Enjoy Mediterranean noshes while donning your “resort casual” wear (after all, this is a restaurant that gives you a beachfront view). The extravagant breakfast buffet has it all: chilled seafood, carving

stations, a wood-fired pizza oven, Mediterranean-inspired small plates and an indulgent battery of desserts. Sunday Fundays feature endless visits to the gourmet Kettle One Bloody Mary Bar, beer garden and a personal favorite, the Veuve Clicquot Rich Champagne Garden.  Angle: Angle, the Resort’s “fine dining” option, offers a farm-tofork menu featuring prime meats and fresh seafood. This isn’t for the faint of heart (or wallet); for example, the butter poached lobster is listed as only a starter. Then there’s the $115 Caviar Staircase, which, when paired with Champagne, may be the official snack of Palm Beach.

FOUR SEASONS 2800 S. OCEAN BLVD., 561/582-2800 The newly revamped Four Seasons Palm Beach offers the unparalleled French Riviera-inspired Florie’s, with a team led by three-star Michelin chef Mauro Colagreco. The menu is rooted in classics (like the heirloom

tomato and pear carpaccio) with a seasonal spin and exquisite execution. Seaway is the resort’s more casual restaurant, with a European terrace vibe and great ocean vistas. Expect the best from both.

NYY STEAK

PICCOLO GELATO

IN SEMINOLE CASINO COCONUT CREEK, 5550 N.W. 40TH ST., COCONUT CREEK, 954/935-6699 Visitors from New York who do not mind a short trip south from Palm Beach may have found their new home! Within the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek, NYY not only boasts a mean cut of meat, but it also provides a swanky lounge for gamblers and diners to relax. NYY’s in-house butcher (how many steakhouses can actually boast that?) dryages its USDA Prime steak for 21 days; you might view this as the Babe Ruth of steaks. It also has an impressive caviar platter served with egg, red onion, crème fraiche and chives. A fan favorite is NYY’s thick-cut

66 VIA MIZNER, 561/814-5966 This cozy, indulgent gelato shop tucked discreetly in Via Mizner is a wide draw for Palm Beachers in search of homemade gelato, gelato pops, gelato cakes, espresso and Italian specialty sodas. This is where you go when the grandkids are in town or if you just want to feel like a kid again.

PICCOLO MONDO 87 VIA MIZNER, 561/655-9599 Piccolo Mondo is elegant Renato’s (next door) casual little sister, serving yummy wraps, sandwiches, salads and pastas in a casual atmosphere. It’s open from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., and is perfect for an after-tennis meal, or lunch on the run— with a decidedly sumptuous spin, of course. This is, after all, Palm Beach.

PIZZA AL FRESCO 14 VIA MIZNER, 561/832-0032 Pizza al Fresco offers excellent dining (indoors and out) in a romantic via, but without the—ahem—romantic prices normally attached to island dining. You can choose from apps and entrees ranging from lobster bisque, lamb sausage, roast chicken and several pastas to a battery of pizzas locals swear by—especially the Palm Beach Pizza, with mozzarella, smoked salmon, caviar, red onions, capers and sour cream. This hidden gem is a locals’ favorite.

romantic restaurant in South Florida, with old-fashioned topdrawer service, a tinkling piano, an outdoor patio space that feels positively European and a fine dining menu that is superb. Renato’s has everything your heart desires, from foie gras to lobster risotto and more. Don’t wait for a special occasion; it’s always a special occasion here.

STARBUCKS 150 WORTH AVE., 561/651-7740 Starbucks had to leap a few hurdles to land on Palm Beach, which is famously anti-franchise, but it is now a popular meeting spot right smack on Worth Avenue in the Esplanade. Caffeine close to both

the beach and action central is all you could ask for.

TA-BOO 221 WORTH AVE., 561/835-3500 Ta-boo is a tradition on the Avenue, and arguably its most wellknown culinary landmark, the place to see and be seen for more than 60 years and counting. It is a local favorite for its happy hour, and regulars know to ask for certain tables. Ta-boo stories include the one that says the Bloody Mary was invented here, and that Joe Kennedy had a tryst with Gloria Swanson in the ladies’ room. True or false, it’s that kind of place—full of great gossip, better steaks and a buzz that never really goes away.

Eau Palm Beach

Laps of Luxury

The waves of the ocean and Intracoastal are never far from these first-rate resorts and hotels. Palm Beach hotels are

legendary for glamour and service—and a real amenity for the Worth Avenue visitor. We suggest you make a holiday of it and rediscover the pleasures of top-ranked lodging and luxury.

The Breakers 1 S. COUNTY ROAD 655-6611, THEBREAKERS.COM The Breakers is synonymous with Palm Beach history and grandeur and is known for its sweeping hotel amenities—four pools, nine restaurants, a fabulous spa, endless beachfront. But we don’t want you to overlook The Seafood Bar, with its bright oceanfront setting, or HMF, for a sumptuous retro bar experience.  Specialty dishes at the Seafood Bar include pan-seared sea scallops and lobster tails. The Seafood Bar is open daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. for both lunch and dinner.  Transport yourself to a world

94

of glitz and glam at HMF, The Breakers’ retro-style bar. Select a drink from HMF’s acclaimed, 2,200-varietal wine list and order a meal from their globally influenced menu. HMF is open on Monday-Thursday and Sunday from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to midnight.

Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach 2800 S. OCEAN BLVD. 582-2800, FOURSEASONS. COM/PALMBEACH One of South Florida’s most elegant oceanfront boutique hotels offers impeccable amenities. The hotel underwent a multimilliondollar renovation a year ago which includes an enhanced beach experience, remodeled pool deck and guest rooms. Its restaurant Florie’s is directed by the 2019 “world’s best restaurant” chef Mauro Colagreco.

The Brazilian Court Hotel & Beach Club 301 AUSTRALIAN AVE. 655-7740, THEBRAZILIANCOURT.COM The graceful Brazilian Court has everything—including a phenomenal Daniel Boulud restaurant—but an essential experience here is the Frédéric Fekkai Salon & Spa. After opening in 2004, it quickly became one of the most notable in the Palm Beach area, with a talented staff and top-notch amenities. This year the Brazilain Court will be undertaking substantial room renovations that will complement both its vintage legacy and its sunny South Florida character. Café Boulud, Daniel Boulud’s awardwinning restaurant, serves an impressive menu of modern French cuisine. The restaurant serves breakfast from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. daily, lunch from 12 p.m.

to 2:30 p.m Monday-Friday and from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, and dinner from 5:30 to 10 p.m. daily.

The Chesterfield Palm Beach 363 COCOANUT ROW 659-5800, CHESTERFIELDPB.COM It’s a delight of a hotel—one of the island’s really great spots— but we’d have to make our favorite amenity The Leopard Lounge. Known as one of the best places to get a drink and people-watch, the venue has live entertainment every day of the week as well as great drink and food specials. This can’t miss nighttime hangout serves hand crafted cocktails as well as bar bites made by Executive Chef Gerald Coughlin. If you’re out for the day, join the Chesterfield for afternoon tea from 1 to 5 p.m., complete with tiny sandwiches, scones and pastries.

Eau Palm Beach Resort 100 S. OCEAN BLVD., MANALAPAN 533-6000, EAUPALMBEACH.COM Eau is whimsical and fully loaded with luxury amenities, but we have to stake our don’t-miss claim on its fabulous Eau Spa, a lavish, 42,000-square-foot “water playground” complete with a bath lounge, salon, spa treatments, garden villas, DIY scrub and polish bar, fitness center and a “bEAUtique.” Looking for a relaxing day to yourself? The spa offers a pass to the Self-Centered Garden, bath lounges, sauna and steam showers and meditation area for just $60 for hotel guests—a fee that is waived if you book a spa treatment. For fine dining made from local and regionally grown products, head to Angle for contemporary American cuisine. The restaurant serves fresh seafood and prime meets in a sleek, modern atmosphere. Angle is open from Tuesday-Saturday from 6 to 10 p.m. Temple Orange is the perfect spot for a casual yet delicious meal. The Mediterraneaninspired restaurant is known for its fresh seafood and signature Mediterranean breakfast buffet served exclusively from Friday to Sunday. Temple Orange is open for breakfast from 7 a.m. to 11:30

a.m. daily and for lunch from noon to 2:30 p.m.

The Colony Palm Beach 155 HAMMON AVE. 655-5430, THECOLONYPALMBEACH.COM The Colony is another classic Palm Beach address, with a pedigree that dates to the days when the Duke and Duchess of Windsor were winter guests. We love, love, love it, but we have to say that its new iteration, including the exquisite CPB restaurant, brings it to a whole new level. Only steps from Worth Avenue, with a pool shaped like the state of Florida, this is Palm Beach at its Palm Beach-iest.

Palm Beach Historic Inn 365 S. COUNTY ROAD 832-4009, PALMBEACHHISTORICINN.COM In the heart of Palm Beach, within walking distance of shops, restaurants and the beach, the Palm Beach Historic Inn is equipped with modern amenities—yet stays true to its historic charm. Only a short distance away are golf courses, luxury spas, bike trails and other attractions unique to the Palm Beach area. After a long day of exploring the town, relax with an in-room spa treatment.
