Overview Mobile technology has been an integral part of learning at JESS since 2012 when we became one of the first schools in the world to integrate iPads into teaching and learning. Since then, JESS has developed an international reputation as a beacon of best practice in the use of technology in education, winning severalawards in the process. In 2018, the JESS Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) scheme was revised to ensure all learners had access to the same level of technology and the same level of rich learning opportunities. The BYOD scheme is now active for Year 3-6 in both JESS primary schools. This guide will help to ensure that you understand the hardware requirements andoptions available to you as well as answer many common questions. If you haveany further queries, please do get in touch.

Device Management At JESS we use the Mosyle MDM (Mobile Device Management) system which means that all iPads are managed by the school. This allows us to deploy apps to devices with ease, as well as apply restrictions on the school network to ensure that online safety protocols are maintained. There are many benefits to using an MDM with our devices:
Devices NOT managed
Devices managed
by school MDM
by school MDM
•
Safety protocols left to family discretion. Student device will not appear on teacher's Apple Classroom
•
School-wide safety protocols – Teacher can view students iPad in lessons via Apple Classroom
•
Apps need to be manually installed at home
•
Self-service: students can install school apps independently
•
Parents pay for educational apps
•
School pays for educational apps
•
Delays when installing apps - Apps need to be installed and updated through personal app store
•
No delays - apps can be used as required
•
Non-educational apps are available on student iPad including games and messaging apps
•
Time-stamped profiles ensure only educational apps are available during the school day (non-school apps are inaccessible during the school day)

Device Options Since September 2018, we standardised the iPad models we use in Key Stage 2. This is to ensure that all students have access to the same level of technology and can access learning content in the same way.
The device we recommend is: • • • •
9th Generation iPad - 64GB and 256GB models are available. We strongly recommend 256GB for longevity. Apple Pencil or Logitech Crayon. Wireless Keyboard.
This device is designed for education and boasts many common features of the iPad Pro but at a fraction of the cost. You may compare this model against others here: http://www.apple.com/ae/ipad/compare
What if you already have an iPad? Whilst we recommend that students are equipped with the 9th Generation iPad, we do understand that, in some situations, this may not be feasible e.g. thestudent has recently been gifted an alternate model iPad. Students are allowedto bring in other model iPads, but we would highlight the fact that some learningcontent may not be accessible on older devices. PLEASE NOTE: If a student brings an iPad into school that was not purchasedthrough our official partners (JTRS), then the device will need to be erased and reset to be enrolled onto our device management system. With theappropriate backups no content will be lost and all prior purchases on the devicecan be reinstalled at no additional charge. More information about how to do thiscan be found later in this document.

Purchasing through JTRS At JESS we work directly with Apple Solution Experts JTRS for sourcing iPads in our primary schools. JTRS can provide parents with a bespoke offer on a device as well as the ability to purchase additional peripherals such as the Apple Pencil or a keyboard.
We would like to draw your attention to the following key points: •
Purchasing through JTRS will mean the device arrives to you, ready to use!
•
Purchasing through the portal is not compulsory. However, we have worked on securing a cost-effective and long-lasting solution for families.
•
We recommend getting the proposed Nutkase cover and the JTRS device warranty, not Apple Care. However, this is completely optional. The benefits of all children having the same cover allows us to plan storage and charging solutions for classrooms, as well as purchasing additional equipment required with known dimensions of covers. Students are familiar with using the covers which have name tag pockets and are easily distinguished from other students’ devices.
•
The JTRS warranty will cover the iPad for 3 years. This does not include accidental breakage. (NB Apple Care can be purchased to cover accidental damage).
•
All maintenance of devices can take place through school, there is no need to find a repair centre or visit an Apple Store.
To purchase your device from JTRS, please visit this link: http://www.jtrs.ae and click eSTORE. You will sign up to create an account at JTRS and then select the correct branch of JESS (Jumeirah or Arabian Ranches). After completing the sign-up process, you will be emailed a username and able to sign into the website and make your purchase.

Online Safety at JESS Online Safety (Digital Literacy) is allocated to a third of our Computing curriculum time, which highlights its importance. As a school, we focus on developing the skills necessary for children, staff and parents to use information and technology in a discriminating manner, so that they can make responsible choices and remain safe online. We work closely with National Online Safety, a partnership that supports us in keeping all stakeholders as safe as possible with their use of technology, in line with UK Government guidelines. You can find out more about NOS during our annual Parent information sessions and on their website that you can access here.

Frequently Asked Questions What happens with the device/apps if my child leaves JESS? If your child leaves JESS, their device will be removed from the school’s system. Apps that were deployed to the device by the school will be removed, but any personal apps will remain. JESS also invest in site licenses for Windows devices for software that your child will use for learning. We utilise Microsoft Endpoint Manager, which allows us to make sure the apps needed for teaching and learning are effective on your child’s device. In recent years, we have invested in Classroom Cloud, which allows us to monitor devices whilst on our school site. This has huge advantages from a safeguarding perspective as we can make sure that students do not access content that is inappropriate. Our child already has an iPad and you say it needs to be wiped in order for our child to use it at school. Will we lose all our apps? Any content purchased using a personal App store account can easily be redownloaded for free from the App Store. Please ensure you back up games such as Minecraft, to a cloud storage solution. What about photos, videos and documents? These need to be backed up either to a cloud storage space like iCloud, Dropbox or OneDrive or by connecting the device to a PC and manually transferring files. We can also assist you with backing up files to the free 200GB iCloud account that each student is provided by the school. What about games, progress and worlds that my child has saved? Progress and scores are generally saved to the Apple Game Centre and therefore safe. Worlds created in platforms like Minecraft need to be transferred manually. Please contact parenthelpdesk@jess.sch.ae for support with this. What if my child is joining JESS in Year 6, do we still need to buy them an iPad? All students in KS2 use iPads across the curriculum daily. As such it is crucial that your child is equipped with the correct device whilst in the JESS primary schools. JTRS offer bespoke education discounts to JESS families as well as providing after-sales support. If your child is joining JESS mid-way through Year 6, pleases peak with a member of the school management team in order to explore the best practical option for you. Please also note that JESS Secondary operates a separate initiative using Windows 11 devices rather than iPad.
