THE DESIGN OF SATELLITE CAMPUS FOR THE USC MARSHALL SCHOOL OF BUSINESS This program is a part of the USC marshall school of business. For design this part, I'm thinking of using the element "lines". Lines could seem as the basic graphic, and the different thickness of lines could be use as different function. I want to use lines to create impressive entrance and rooftop, to see what could happened when "lines" meet "geometric".

[01]Nolli in Los Angeles

[02]Transcripts of Los Angeles The first stage of the studio takes its name from Nolli's map. I was to make a direct tracing of Los Angeles through its representation of Plan, bringing it further to trace the representation of its figure-ground relationship. The task was to not simply produce a script that read as a city but to take an image and translate it into objects. From there to begin to consider the activities that take place within such space on a daily basis. As this continuous tracing occurs, one cannot help but daydream about what occurs in the proximity of the line I'm tracing. This brought a deep understanding of the corners, nooks, and cracks of Los Angeles’ mapping.

From these recordings, I gathered the events of the section, then selected stills, moments in the narrative, from which to create spatial diagrams. Each spatial diagram is a transcript of the city, an experienced and processed part of the story.

[03]Constructs of Memory One drawing to be constructed from my ten transcripts. By taking pieces of the events I had witnessed and translated as spacial diagrams, and composing them as one, I made a scene of recollection, richer than my singular elements. Each drawing then served as a piece of a new map. This map is a recomposition of Downtown LA. A map which no longer simply evokes daydreams, but one which is constructed from memory, experience, reality.

The project basic the topic “interiority”. The definition of interiority could be state of being interior, but I addressed more about the transformation between interior and exterior. My precedent is After the Party designed by OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen, which is turning the exterior space into the interior condition and the exterior becomes the interior because add the new part. It is literally operating with space.

For my project, I choose to add a new part for LA center library. I’m working with the representation of an exterior condition, use that to produce a new interior space. Trying to capture the memory of exterior of the existing art-deco building and showing new open public space with the elements of the old one.

Referred to the city of Xi'an, history is the concept which cannot be ignored. In our understanding, history is not a volume of sta c memory, but a dynamic con nua on. Yesterday is the history of today and today is the history of tomorrow. When we walked the mean streets of Sanxuejie, compared to those glorious past which only exists in books, we are more concerned about the present scene of life. Therefore, we do not intend to force back to the vanished history, but tend to focus on the present me, and create a building what the community needs. Only be faithful to today, we may get a more realis c and con nuous history in the future. Architecture is always serving people. In our design, we decided to expand the “people” from calligraphy fans to all the local people and visitors. Thinking about the expensive cket and towering walls of the Bei Lin Museum, what we should inherited is a respect for the art of calligraphy, but not the apathy to residents and low-income people. Therefore, we decided to design a building that is totally opposite of the Bei Lin Museum. The new building should be approachable and opened. It should be a free market for calligraphy fans to exchange, display and sale. It should be loved and used by local residents in our site as their own houses and courtyards.

The sit and its southern monuments formed a vertical axis, and the center of the Bei Lin museum formed a horizontal axis.

Most of visitors will choose the left road, because it is more prominent. The people who go home, the elder and children will be more familiar with the path.

There are three roads around the site, and that accesse to four main entrances. The left side of road contact north and south road, which is the main road.

In the site there are many trees, they have been on the ground g rowt h of d ozens or e ve n a hundred years. These trees carry a generation of memory.

CONTEXT DIAGRAM

The context of tradi onal Chinese Architecture - the central courtyard, in the north side of the site is more complete reservations. We hope that the new building could restore the context of these traditional folk houses , making site more harmonious.

Although the context of the site is sca ered, it formed a lot of small courtyard and space. We want to use these has been formed courtyard, connect them, form a united courtyard. It forms a new public space for children to play games and the elder to play chess.

According to the influence of the new building programs, original context, height and the distribu on of roof shapes of existing residences, determine the loca on of new united courtyard. We divided it into two parts, distinguished with func ons.

The two part of new building are connected with each other by new united courtyard. The two new buildings are connected by terrace that are elevated above the original yard, interacting with the original building and the human ac vi es in the yard.

INTERIOR VIEW Using the calligraphy practice paper called “ � in china as prototype, to discuss the possibility of the building's roof . Dividing four small pieces into eight small pieces, changing the height and angle, forming a variety of morphological changes.

We extract the tradi onal inscrip ons concept of yin and yang seal, using it for the roof design. Yin and yang means virtual and solid , black and white in china, which is what we called inverse.

The changes of roof according to the function of the interior space, and the public space such as the classroom will be higher than other places. Conversely, roofs of offices, cafe space will be lower .In the some part of the roof used white glass for sunlight, on behalf of the inscriptions concept of "Yang" part, the rest of black part of the roof on behalf of the inscriptions concept of "Yin" part. From the bird's eye view we can feel a strong atmosphere of calligraphy. 39

Climbers cons tute a very common groups at present. Unlike tourists, they like to travel but do not take the unusual way. They like adventure but the way for them always lack of security. We think about climbers, and we want to design depots for them. If we could solve the problem about food, water, cooking, armarium and electricity for them, they will get a be er adventure journey. Compared with other mountains, the terrain in Taibai Mountain is rela vely flat, and it has very different climate in itself. With the increasing al tude, the clima c types are distributed in a con nuous strip. The three-dimensional climate differences, so that plants and animals also form a corresponding ver cal distribu on spectrum. So here is not just climbers ' favorite place to travel , it is also the natural laboratory for scien sts. In response to this phenomenon, I want to design a Taibai Mountain supply sta on. According to the climbers' travel routes and travel needs of the inves ga on, I design four main sta ons, including res ng area, armarium, kitchen and dining room in major route where climbers passed by,and each has a specific research area. I also design some sub-sta on beside main sta on, reducing the area and only has basic func ons.

Tourists littering when they climb the mountains, causing great damage to environment. In the mountains where near the res ng sta ons design place of waste separa on and recovery, and then transport garbage out of the mountain, back to mountain green.

Climbers choose to rest in the familiar venue, but the original site of the cabin is too old to be use. The original log cabin is demolished and the reusable wood is picked and then re-polished and protected them so that it can be reused in the new building. shabby

The original site is used, if we choose a new place in the mountains to build, will undermine the original ecological balance. It is an environmentally friendly approach when we choose to rebuild building at the old site.

PROGRAMS The basic func ons of the res ng sta on includes kitchen, restroom, res ng area, dining room and so on. The tents were sta oned at the campsite around the res ng sta on. In addi on to these basic func ons for mountain climbers, four res ng sta ons are also set up different functions of scientific research sites. These research sites are not only for scholars, but also for tourists and enthusiasts to learn.

The al tude and loca on of the four res ng sta ons are very different, so the func on of scien fic research space is also different. The rest sta on of lowest al tude is near the water source, so its research func on is hydrological sta on. The researchers can easily measure the water level and collect sludge in there. Taibai Mountain at an altitude of 2000-3000 place, there are many rare plants, so the researchers could collected the seeds of plants and study the growth of leaves. In more than 3000m, there are many rocks and special geological, suitable for geological research. At the top of the mountain, there is no obstruc on of vision, suitable for the observa on of the stars, so the research ins tu ons designed for the Observatory.

The site near the campsite named Tie Jia tree, where is temperate monsoon climate, located at the bottom of mountain and near a river. The surrounding plants are mostly deciduous broad-leaved forest, such as poplar, lacquer tree and elm.

The site near the campsite named Res ul Temple, where belongs to cold temperate monsoon climate zone, surrounded by rich plant species. And there are many rare plants only survive in Taibai Mountain, which have a good scien fic research value.

The site near the campsite named Old Temple, surrounded by coniferous forest. In this place,nine months of the year is winter, and it is more cold in the evening, and often fog in the a ernoon.

Mountain Breeze

Valley Breeze

During the day, the air over the mountain slope heats up more than the air at the foot of the mountain. The warm air over the slope reduces in density. A low pressure is created at the top of the mountain and high pressure from the cool air below forces a cool breeze to move upward. This condition generates a breeze which we call Valley breeze, and it is very common during warmer months when there is a lot of heating from the sun.

Baxian Platform is the peak of Taibai Mountain, where most of the me in ice and snow. In there, the climate is cold, thin air, strong sunlight, often winds. In the top of the mountain, vegetation is less, so you can better observe stars.

In the night, it is a lot cooler as the sun goes to sleep. So the air at the upper slope of the mountain cools off very quickly and becomes dense. A high pressure is created. At this time, the air at the valley floor is a lot warmer (low pressure) and is forced to give way to colder air moving down the slope towards the valley floor. This is called mountain breeze, and it is a lot common in the colder months when there is less warming from the sun.

Because of the influence of the valley and mountain breeze and the relationship between the terrain itself, we decided to divided four sites into two groups.

The Taibai Mountain climbing route can be divided into four parts depending on the al tude, and the geology, climate, vegetation, oxygen consumption are all different. We set up four res ng sites and research centers for four clima c zones, based on the climbers' needs. For example, high al tude areas are colder, and climbers require more oxygen and longer rest periods, more likely to feel cold at rest me. In night, they will also need a thicker sleeping bag. Conversely, at low al tudes, people are more physically fit and there are many rivers, people won't need to worry about the lack of water.

The type A applies to Res ul Temple and Old Temple, for against single-sided The type B applies to Tiejia Tree and Baxian Pla orm, for against double-sided cold winds. In the surface where cold wind could come, created double curved cold winds. In the forest to design a rest space for those backpackers, starting from t he m ost b a si c s ha pe -rectangular.

Combined with the location of site to create an additional research space--observatory.

Reduce the size of the research space to make it more flexible, which also could produce some terrace.

Design a teaching space between observatory and the rest space , and blend the two spaces.It is a method to sandwich the teaching space horizontally in two spaces.

The original resting area can also be divided into kitchen, restroom and dining hall. High ceiling makes the space more open.

We split a part of high ceiling space, making it the right size of kitchen and the place for drink tea.

We divide the high space into two parts, one for meals and one for teaching.

Connecting the kitchen and dining roo m t h rou gh t h e ste ps a n d connecting the hall and the second floor through the staircase, where could learn about astronomical knowledge and rest.

Because the original terrain has a small slope, we heightened the ground floor of kitchen space to make it more fit terrain.

The observatory is divided into two parts, one carrying the activities of the people, one part is used to rotate.

We i n c r e a s e a s p a c e i n t h e observatory for stair between the second floor and third floor.

The design of pivoted scuttle and roof makes the observation of stars possible.

The curved walls can make the cold wind flow along the direction of the wall, making the room will not face the cold wind attacks.

Double wall could form an air insulation layer.

The spherical wall allows the cold wind to flow away from both directions.
