MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
Welcome to the Department of Surgery at the University of Oklahoma. This year we accomplished pandemic needs and surgical needs. We balanced working from home and taking care of patients. Simply, we found a way to persevere. I hope you enjoy learning about the continued success and accomplishments of members of this department. First, I would like to highlight that we have a new Division of Transplant Surgery. Our new Division Chief, Tomasz Kozlowski, M.D., has put together a tremendous team that includes transplant surgeon, Narendra Battula M.D. and transplant nephrologist Elzbieta Kozlowska, M.D. I am very excited about where this division will take transplantation for our department and the state of Oklahoma. I would also like to congratulate Suhair Maqusi, M.D. on her new role as Division Chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Her leadership has brought new surgeons, a new educational curriculum, and a vision to take us into the future. Finally, I would like to compliment our graduating residents and fellows. Despite the pressure of the pandemic they performed at the highest level. I believe every year we graduate the top surgeons in the country. I know we will be proud to watch where their careers take them.

Plastics Craniofacial Imaging Lab
The division of Plastic Surgery is happy to welcome Mohammad Abdul-Mukit to expand our Craniofacial Imaging Lab. Dr. Abdul-Mukit is completing his Ph.D. with the University of Oklahoma and brings his expertise in Computer Vision, Machine Learning, and Mixed-Reality Computing. He is currently working on Surgical Enhanced Visualization System (SEViS), a cuttingedge Augmented Reality and Virtual Surgical Planning system. SEViS is the fruit of a research project sponsored by the Office of Vice-President for Research and the OU Foundation Craniofacial Fund. The first application, "IntraOp VSP" transfers pre-operative Virtual Planning for craniofacial surgery to facilitate and guide the execution phase. Future planned applications involve tumor resection (e.g. abdominal, pancreas, liver, etc), applications in surgical teaching (e.g. tracking surgeon/learner hand movements), and workflow optimization. "Mukit", as he prefers to be called, joined us in early January 2021. Please stop by the division of Plastic Surgery on the 8th floor of Andrews Academic Tower to check out the equipment and see how it can be applied to your field. We are looking forward to as much input and discussions from residents and faculty as possible.

The Department of Surgery at the OU College of Medicine aims to lead the region in clinical trials, high-impact science, and extramural grant funding because we know our patients need us to continue striving toward new discoveries. Advancing patient care by contributing to high-quality research is a top priority for the Department of Surgery at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. To support surgeon-scientists in this effort, OU CARES was founded in 2018, bringing together people with a wide breadth of skills and a strong desire to help both current and future patients. OU CARES supports our faculty and trainees in projects along the spectrum of translational science, from the bench to comparative effectiveness research. Our research support team includes funded bench scientists, epidemiologists, and biostatisticians with expertise in risk score development and big data sets, regulatory experts, 2 clinical research nurses, and an experienced histologist skilled at creating publicationready images. These services are available to all faculty and trainees at no cost.
Services Centralized support request - To assure rapid response to requests for assistance from OU CARES as we build our department’s database of projects and enhance collaboration, we have developed an easy online intake form. Once submitted, the members of our team will be notified of the areas you need support. A member of our team will be in contact with further instructions and to set up a meeting to discuss the project. You can request assistance at: https://redcap.ouhsc.edu/redcap/surveys/?s=8DCMJAC488
Industry/Investigator-Initiated Trial and Regulatory Compliance Support Our team is currently supporting 131 active IRBs and onboarding 4 new industry-sponsored trials which are estimated to bring in over $490,000 in research funds. We are able to assure regulatory compliance, support clinical trials, and negotiate industry trial budgets. Please send all information in regards to the trial to the email below. We review all trials every Friday and will reach out to the interested PI to discuss feasibility. Please send as much information as possible to ensure a quick turnaround: OUCares@ouhsc.edu. Let us help you from the beginning to get the best results!
Access to REDCAP To gain access to REDCap and to get a specially designed database for your project, please click on the link below and you should be able to log in with your OUHSC credentials. If you have any trouble, please email Asaleigh Cline (asaleighcline@ouhsc.edu). She will be in touch soon with further instructions. https://redcap.ouhsc.edu/
Public Outreach and Research Education Our Research Webpage allows us to highlight our services, team members, and your research accomplishments. At https://medicine.ouhsc.edu/Academic-Departments/Surgery/Research you will find the link to request help through RedCAP, the recent Surgery Department Pilot Grant Awardees, and subpages for bench research labs in our Department. We are also planning to have an Abstract and grant submissions calendar soon. We are actively working on extending the impact of our Department’s research through social media outreach as well. Please send us your Presentations and Publications (bonus if you have a picture!) and a link to the publication so we can Tweet it out and increase your readership. Asaleigh Cline serves as our point of contact for medical students interested in collaborating with Faculty and Residents within our Department. She can help assure the student has all the needed research training and assist with getting them Meditech, PACs, and EMR access for research projects. She matches students who do not yet have a research mentor by assessing their interests and available projects in the RedCAP database. Currently, 31 medical students have been matched with research projects in the last year! You can reach out to her at Asaleigh-Cline@ouhsc.edu.
Epidemiology, Statistics, Study Design, and Translational Project Development Dr. Garwe leads our Epidemiology and Statistics core facility and can match faculty and residents with the team member best suited for the project after receiving requests through the online RedCAP survey (https://redcap.ouhsc.edu/redcap/surveys/?s=8DCMJAC488). In the Community
CIVITAS MINISTERIUM In 2020, the world saw itself waging a war against an enemy that was difficult to contain. Governments and communities around the world were moving in concert to mobilize resources to slow the spread of Covid 19. Efforts such as requiring people to isolate themselves and to wear personal protective equipment were helping to mitigate the human costs of this disease, but the devastating effects that Covid 19 had on the economy forced governments to perform a delicate balancing act between protecting the public's health and stabilizing the economy. Loss of jobs, and consequently people's ability to provide for their families was reminiscent of the Great Depression and required financial measures of epic proportions. Fortunately, communities were just as duty-bound as governments in ensuring everyone's safety and economic well-being. In spite of these dire times, communities reached out across physical, political, and economic borders to help each other. They rose to the occasion by doing their part through an outpouring of support from churches, organizations, and private citizens, bridging the gap between state assistance and the unmet needs of the many. The surge in giving and service is an example of how we continue to come together as a community in the wake of a global crisis. The Latin term, civitas ministerium, which means community service, is a word embedded in our culture. It implies a duty to serve. Countless people, such as our doctors, are taking up the charge to help their communities combat this insidious disease by serving on the front lines in hospitals, research centers, and health care facilities. Our doctors embody the essence of civitas ministerium. They are the fearless warriors who are worked tirelessly to treat infected patients, slow the spread of Covid 19 and develop effective treatments for patients.
Our doctors were prepared to take the necessary measures to protect their patients. They not only are experts in their respective fields but are trained in critical care and authorized to use their emergency privileges during times of crisis. Doctors changed the way they did business in finding other ways to provide treatment by triaging patient care and scheduling more telemedicine visits, limiting the number of patients in hospital rooms, and having patients wait in their cars when they have office visits. These were all protocols to protect the public. Protocols in place at OU included requiring all staff to wear face masks and ensuring staff who care for cancer patients to wear N95 ventilators. Both types of PEs help prevent transmission in either direction, making it less likely to spread the disease. We also practiced hand hygiene and social distancing as we lived a 'new norm'. Today, we have a vaccine. While not mandatory, it is highly encouraged to get vaccinated. As we begin to return to pre-Covid times, we must still use precaution around those who have not been vaccinated, where mask in large settings and practice hand hygiene and sanitizing. ~Yolanda Boyer
