Division of Surgical Oncology Division of Transplant Surgery Administration Education Research Events

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Welcome to the final newsletter of 2021. It is nice to see us slowly exiting the pandemic and entering a more recognizable reality. During this year we continued to excel with our missions, grew as a department, and added to our individual accomplishments. I would like to highlight the return of Research Day. The research presented was not only informative, but the level of sophistication was impressive. Dr. Herb Chen, from the University of Alabama, capped the day with a Grand Rounds that had many universal lessons, which I am sure, impacted the faculty and residents. The Department of Surgery continues to grow and we are now at 61 clinical faculty. I would like to welcome Dr. Ahsan, Dr. Andacoglu, and Dr. Oseini who have joined the Transplant Division. These talented faculty members will be a welcome addition as the Transplant Service Line accelerates towards regional dominance. I would like to also welcome back Dr. Landmann as she joins the Pediatric Surgery Division, I know she will accomplish great goals. Finally, I would like to thank the entire department for your poise, patience, and perseverance as our academic landscape is continually shifting. I am extremely proud of your leadership, academic vigor, and dedication to our students and residents.

Barish H. Edil, MD Professor & Chair

Awards & Recognition Transplant surgery is the newest division to join the Department of Surgery. In 2021, the transplant team implanted the highest number of organs at OU. We had more than 70 organs transplanted for liver, kidney, and pancreas recipients. The Liver Transplant Program regained its CMS Certificate and ended 2021 with more than 40 liver transplants. The previous record for liver transplants at OU Health was 19 in one year, in 2019. Congratulations to the growing transplant team for their hard work and determination.

As we bid farewell to our graduating residents, we also welcome our new chiefs. Arthur Grimes, MD will be pursuing a Trauma Critical Care Fellowship at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem. Jaclyn Isabella, MD will be pursuing a Colorectal Surgery Fellowship at Louisiana State University - New Orleans. Aditi Jalla, MD will be pursuing a Trauma Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Florida Jacksonville. Bailey Kleis, MD will be pursuing a General Surgery practice with the Air Force. Maureen Mannas, MD will be pursuing a General Surgery practice. Rachael Palumbo, MD will be pursuing a Trauma Critical Care Fellowship at Yale in New Haven, Connecticut.

Over the past year, the Department of Surgery has been preparing to be a part of the national initiative that is EQIP. EQIP is a continuous quality improvement program that will allow surgical Program Directors to assess their programs and make necessary changes to improve surgical training with the ultimate goal of producing the highest quality surgeons. With the constant help of Melissa Pachucki, the Department of Surgery was able to complete the contract with EQIP to use their program for the upcoming years. Last year we participated in the beta test thanks to the help of Dr. Laura Blackburn, collecting data points of graduating residents over six years. This information described the residents’ experience as medical students, the surgical training program, and the performance of the individual residents. The use of this data will be able to create predictors that will be used to analyze the next three years of data and create an observation to the predicted ratio for each program to create information that will be organized graphicly as a caterpillar plot. Every program that takes part in EQIP will receive this plot with their results displayed against all other de-identified participating programs to facilitate the creation of learning collaboratives, pool data, add additional data elements, and look at collaborative group’s outcomes against the rest of the EQIP participating centers.

The Department of Surgery at the OU College of Medicine aims to lead the region in clinical trials, high-impact science, and extramural grant funding because we know our patients need us to continue striving toward new discoveries. Advancing patient care by contributing to high-quality research is a top priority for the Department of Surgery at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. To support surgeon-scientists in this effort, OU CARES was founded in 2018, bringing together people with a wide breadth of skills and a strong desire to help both current and future patients. OU CARES supports our faculty and trainees in projects along the spectrum of translational science, from the bench to comparative effectiveness research. Our research support team includes funded bench scientists, epidemiologists, and biostatisticians with expertise in risk score development and big data sets, regulatory experts, clinical research nurses, and an experienced histologist skilled at creating publicationready images. These services are available to all faculty and trainees at no cost.

To Request Services Check-in with us at the link below and we will be in contact within a week. https://redcap.ouhsc.edu/redcap/surveys/?s=8DCMJAC488

Industry/Investigator-Initiated Trial and Regulatory Compliance Support Our team is currently supporting 136 active IRBs, 15 investigator-initiated trials, as well as 10 industry-sponsored trials. We assure regulatory compliance, support clinical trials, and negotiate industry trial budgets. If approached about a new industry trial, please send all information in regards to the trial to the email below. We review all trials every Friday and will reach out to the interested PI to discuss feasibility. Please send as much information as possible to ensure a quick turnaround: OUCares@ouhsc.edu. Let us help you from the beginning to get the best results!

Access to REDCAP To gain access to REDCAP and design a HIPAA-compliant database for your project, please click on the link below and log in with your OUHSC credentials. If you have any trouble, please email Asaleigh Cline (asaleigh-cline@ouhsc.edu). https://redcap.ouhsc.edu/. If you would like help creating the database, click on the box labeled REDCAP design on the intake form. https://redcap.ouhsc.edu/redcap/surveys/?s=8DCMJAC488

Public Outreach and Research Education Our Research Webpage allows us to highlight our services, team members, and your research accomplishments. At https://medicine.ouhsc.edu/Academic-Departments/Surgery/Research you will find the link to request help through REDCAP, the recent Surgery Department Pilot Grant Awardees, and subpages for bench research labs in our Department. We are working on extending the impact of our department’s research through social media outreach, so please send us your presentations and publications (bonus if you have a picture!) and a link to the publication. We can Tweet it out and increase your readership. Asaleigh Cline serves as our point of contact for medical students interested in collaborating with faculty and residents within our department. She can help assure the student has all the needed research training and assist with getting them Meditech, PACs, and EMR access for research projects. She matches students who do not yet have a research mentor by assessing their interests and available projects in the REDCAPdatabase. Currently, 63 medical students have been matched with research projects in the last two years! You can reach out to her at Asaleigh-Cline@ouhsc.edu.

Epidemiology, Statistics, Study Design, and Translational Project Development Dr. Garwe leads our Epidemiology and Statistics core facility and can match faculty and residents with the team member best suited for the project after receiving requests through the intake survey (https://redcap.ouhsc.edu/redcap/surveys/?s=8DCMJAC488). Her team can assist with study design, analysis of large national datasets such as NSQIP public user files, and power calculations. Request help early in your study design for best outcomes. Dr. Berry is a funded scientist with wide expertise in advanced molecular biology techniques and mouse models of disease. Collaborative discussions regarding translational project ideas can also be requested at the above link.

Surgeons at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center are dedicated to excellence in education, research and patient care. We appreciate the generous support of patients and their families, alumni, physicians, friends and businesses. Your gift can help improve a child’s health, award a resident a scholarship, or provide funds for research, equipment, computers, library materials and more. Every gift we receive makes a difference, and we sincerely thank you for your generosity. Development Office University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center P.O.
