INTERIOR INNOVATION JESSICA W.L. MA | DESIGN PORTFOLIO
THE PURPOSE, THE PASSION
hello.
I knew from a young age that I wanted to work with purpose and explore the capacity of helping those around me. As a transfer student from medical engineering, I advocate for alleviating obstacles that hinder human interactions and lifestyles. I brought this mindset with me when I transitioned to design. I believe whichever path one pursues, there is always the need to consider the bigger picture of leaving an impact on the world, the environment, and its people. As a conscious designer, I am fortunate to find every opportunity to make purposeful mistakes, and to be knocked down in order to rise higher. I cannot afford to be afraid of how the industry will judge me, but what I can do is throw myself in the pool of creativity and exploration. Each and every project reflects a part of me: my passion for working with the community, my yearning for tackling challenging obstacles, and simply my curiosity for what the world can offer to its people and environment.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION 1 in 59 children are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the U.S.A. and need educational services until the age of 21. Centers for Independent Living exist to aid training for ASD individuals to learn and practice independent living. The mission is to create a specialized facility to help teach these individuals with real life experience, accommodating the needs of all users while following universal design principles.
CLIENTS & USERS Locally controlled and non-profit agency operated by people with disabilities for people with disabilities. The centre not only works with autistic members, but with individuals from all spectrums of abilities. They strive to aid these individuals to successfully transition from system dependency to independence.

The traditional approach following the fixed limitations of the rigid and stacked grid.
Shifting the rigid grid in search for new possibilities, alternatives and experiences.
Embracing change and seeking for the unknown, the unanswered and the “new”.
Forseeing the limitations of the grid by empowering and embracing one’s full potential.
AGAINST THE GRID Empowering the mind to its full potential without conforming to the norm. The grid refers to the traditional approach towards living behind 4 walls. Designing for those with autism often leads towards the emphasis of comfort and familiarity. Against the Grid strives to branch out of the comfort zone and seek for one’s full potential.
MATERIALITY & SENSES CEILING SKYLIGHT
Individuals with autism can either be hyper or hypo sensitive in regards to the 5 senses. Therefore, it is important to pick suitable materials for specific areas. Since the form of the design is primarily dominating, materiality is kept to a minimum to draw more attention to the form rather than colour and imagery. The continuous use of timber veneer serves to create an endless tunnel that the space ultimately transforms into.

THE RECEPTION This is the welcoming - where individuals are greeted into the space. Adjacent to the training kitchen and staff offices, the reception area serves as a muti-purpose space that allows staff and users to dine, relax or socialize. Here, one can also pick the tunnel he or she wants to explore.
TRAINING KITCHEN The training kitchen ensures an open space where both instructors and users are exposed and aware of each other, thus ensuring all users are safe. Both sinks and counters are height adjustable and storage is kept at a reachable height for easy access. This ensures that any user, regardless of their abilities, can use the facility and equipment.
ATRIUM Windows are incroporated to ensure safety and regulation of users while offering privacy. Alcove seating is hidden in walls to provide hideouts and areas of solitude.
GROWING AGAINST THE GRID
1. TRAINING KITCHEN ELEVATION ADA | ADJUSTABLE COUNTER | USER FRIENDLY
Tunnel vision is common trait amongst autistic individuals. This is when a person has difficulty responding to multiple dimensions. Instead of forcing the individual to focus, the tunnel structure is taken for inspiration to create a singular path that stimulates the human mind. The timber tunnel encourages exploring and reminisces an altered wonderland.
1.
2.
Importance is given to every space, leaving openings to suggest clues for each space’s purpose. The tunnel ultimately grows into the space, against the grid and coves to create a safe, comforting, yet mysterious environment.

RECREATIONAL LIBRARY Located in the core of the facility, education strives to be an important aspect for all individuals. This library serves to offer a hideout spot for bookworms, a comfortable haven, or for any curious mind lingering around. Alcove seats and beanbags allow for all types of users to use the space regardless of their abilities.
SENSORY INTEGRATION ROOM The sensory room represents the beginning and growth of independence and living. Autistic individuals value their personal time and this must be respected and embraced. The tree signifies the source of energy that comes within individuals. Like a tree, one can grow if he or she does not restrain to any limitations or constraints.
As interior designers, we do not design for anyone, but everyone.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated cities in the world with approximately 6,300 people per square km. With a high demand in apartments and living spaces, living comfortably and efficiently has been a challenge for many individuals, especially young digital nomads. The mission is to transfrom the traditional approach towards living in confined spaces and fuse functionality, efficiency with design and experience.
CLIENTS & USERS Amelia and Julia Evans are two identical twins who immigrated to Hong Kong as freelancers and creative influencers. Both individuals are nomads who value privacy but also social networking with others. As twins, they share many interests but also have cultivated their own unique identities.

MULTI-PURPOSE BEDROOM & WORKING SPACE Digital nomads spend most ot their time working on their electronic devices - often working from home and off site. This multi-purpose space enables individuals to rest but also transform the space into a personalized working office when needed.
FLEXIBLE MILLWORK FOR CATERED LIVING The living space alters according to the needs of the users. The kitchen counter holds all necessary appliances, fixtures, storage and also seating for dining and relaxation. The minimal and clean design decreases the need for space. The multi-purpose closet serves as a moving wall divider and also storage for clothes and other necessities. It acts as a privacy component but allows for the twins to adjust their space accordingly.
THE “BOUNDLESS BRIDGE The twins essentially share the bridge together. This space is comprised of the basic necessities and serves as the shared space for the two independent individuals. Like the connection between the twins, the bridge supports the lifestyle needed when living both independently and interdependently.
PRAGMATIC, EFFICIENT & FUNCTIONABLE It is important that confined spaces can still accomplish certain functions and tasks. The toilet and shower are separated to increase efficiency and accessibility. Instead of following the traditional kitchen setup, the customized counter serves to meet all the requirements needed to cook and enjoy a meal. When needed, the counter can serve as a dining spot with hidden seating stored within.
