Des Moines is a capital city in State of Iowa where many cultural groups live together side by side. Within mixed soft and hard infrastructures throughout the town, the project focused on three distinctive neighborhoods that serve different needs; Martin Luther King Area is dominated by African American community, Capital East is dominated by young children and teenagers, and Capital Park is dominated by Hispanic community. The design studio is a collaborative project together with Community Design Lab at Iowa State University Extension. The students came from

diverse backgrounds and were split into five teams in the first phase which focused on different issues such as housing-preservation, housing-land used, recreation-transportation, walkability-transportation, and social-arteducation. The second phase is individual extended development based on something that the person was passionated about.

Project Timeline

This is a professional semester-long studio where the students can learn intimately about these three neighborhoods to connect different perspectives from big to details analysis.

Mission: To rehabilitate and improve Gowanus Canal and surrounding environments through Dewey Degrass park revitalization project which become the water healing center with phytoremediation and rain storage systems. 12

Project Description Gowanus Water Works was a part of Gowanus by Design annual competition in Brooklyn, NY. All student from Urban Design studio were participated to be the part of design competition. Gowanus Water Works theme was about water rehabilitation and revitalization from Gowanus canal, the infamous superfund site in Brooklyn, NY. Requirements of the project was to connect gowanus canal to Dewey Degrass park. Some programs elements need to be included in the park as well such as community center, swimming pool, basketball courts, volleyball courts, etc. My design approach was to utilizing plants as the

healing tool to solve drought issue around the areas with cleaning gowanus water that can be used for street trees irrigation around the park. Another system which is being proposed in the park was rain water storage system to keep and utilizing rain water for swimming pool water supplies.

Project Timeline

Gowanus Water Works project was three months long design development which involved site visits, design charrettes, and various medias exploration. The final product of this studio was presented and submitted into Gowanus by Design annual competition. Gowanus project was a

B project where I explored different design development for the first time from scientific research, abstract design, grading construction, to actual visualization.

Challenges/Takeaways

Adjusting vision and ideas that we had to connect with design competition requirements was challenging. There were many required amenities in the proposed lists but actually less space provided in exisitng site condition. The challenge is to be creative with the amount of spaces to build parks amenities as well as healing Gowanus water quality.

My Roles

In this individual project, I did analysis and research phase then did the exploration stage, from creating models, lighting studies to field sketches. In the production stage, I worked on plan, section views, perspectives, planting plans.

It shows environmental process to heal Gowanus water in Dewey Degrass park. There will be two processes that will happen as healing systems; phytoremediation and rain storage systems. The main purpose of Phytoremediation process is to recycle Gowanus water to be used as irrigation water throughout the park. Another system, rain storage system will be functioning as the water supply for swimming pool during summertime as well as secondary water storage if more water needed for irrigation. Since the dearth of water around Gowanus area, the main purpose of the park is to sustain itself.

Project Description:

Mapleton is a close-knit community located in Iowa. There was major tornado that hit the town on 2010.Mapleton recovery process has been gone on ever since. Three years ago, Mapleton was chosen as one of the towns which selected for Community Visioning Program. Community Visioning is program lead by Iowa State Extension and Iowa Department of Transportation. After that Mapleton project was being introduced for studio case analysis for landscape architecture students since 2012-2015 The students in studio were divided into five different groups; walkability, trailhead, trail connection, campground, and nature play. I involved

ideas in two public meetings to communicating with community about their preferences. Having experiences with children help me to be more understanable how children development based on psychology, physical behavior, and social economic conditions will stimulate them to thrive.

Challenges/Takeaways

The prominent challenge in design development was to make sure open communication happening between student and Mapleton community to cater their needs. Having closed interactions with the community helping me to understand as a design to create better place for community.

A//

The nature play team did participatory research with Mapleton first-fifth grades students and their parents to find out how many hours students can play outside and the distances from homes parents will let their children go unsupervised.

B//

Research and development to focus on physical, mental, and social abilities of different age groups. These series of forms show specific age range abilities to perform physically. The goal of this study is to better understand the ability to derive forms from developmental needs of childrena and the way they utilize their spaces.

Mission: Connecting infrastructures throughout Lincoln Way that connecting Iowa State campus with Campustown to create safer and comfortable environments for everyone. 30

Project Description:

The design studio cherished and recognized Lincoln Way as the first road accross America which also pass through Iowa State Univesity. In City of Ames, Lincoln Highway become the major street which also serves to connect Iowa State campus to downtown area. Through research and analysis, I decided to focus on safety and comfort issues along Lincoln Way that located side by side with Campustown area. There are several areas which create uneasiness for pedestrians that pass through them. Lack of street lights, paths, pedestrian crossing lanes, shelters become some issues that need to be addressed around the area.

Welch Ave

Project Timeline

There were three different design stages during the implementation of this project. From research analysis about the town existing condition, individual design exploration, to the improvement of final design stage. I divided the final project with two different focus, walkability and circulation flows.

Challenges/Takeaways

It is both comforting and challenging to work on my own campus on the same time. Comforting because I know exactly what is missing and things

that need to be improved around the area. The challenging part was after the research process. When finally I took time to narrow the focus, it was pretty challenging since I want all the issues that I found to be addressed but focusing on improving particular thing will be more efficient. Since this project also an individual design exploration, it was pretty challenging to figure it out everything by myself. Because other students had different approaches and topics that they wanted to address, it was hard to connect and relate of how what they did would help me to improve the designs.
