A TRANSITION INTO THE FUTURE

Chapter One The Creation of Trendition > Definition of Trendition > Summary

“The future is not written, rather it remains open. The future is multiple, undetermined and open to a large variety of possibilities. That which will happen tomorrow depends less on prevailing trends or any sort of fatalistic determinism, and more on the actions of groups and individuals in the face of these trends. Professor Michael Godet, Laboratory of Innovation, Strategic Foresight and Organization.

> DEFINITION OF TRENDITION A mixture of Trend, Transition & Rendition were blended together to create the title Trendition. TREND [Noun] - The general direction in which something tends to move. TRANSITION [Noun] - Passage from one form, state, style or place to another. RENDITION [Noun] - A translation, often interpretive. All these words linked together have the meaning of moving forward, dealing with consequences of the future and solving them.

Chapter Two Scenario Planning > Scenario Planning > Vincent Callebaut

“Strive for perfection within everything you do. Take the best that exists and make it better. When it does not exist. Design it.” Sir Henry Royce

> SCENARIO PLANNING Scenario Planning depends on “might”. “Might” is the operative word, an opening quote that suggests many different routes for the future. A scenario planner will carefully decide how the shift is likely to change the cultural, social and environmental structure of people’s day-to-day lives.

> WHAT IF “What if” is a good start on a way to plan a scenario. Designers use their creative and imaginative abilities to add depth, dimension and perception to how the future could be. Think the Unthinkable.

CALLEBAUT’S LILYPAD The Lilypad designed by architect Vincent Callebaut, is a “floating ecopolis for climate refugees” designed in order to tackle the ongoing issue of climate change. He has adressed it in a way that is both practical yet visionary. The Lilypad is completely self-sustainable through a number of technologies; solar panels, wind & water turbines. Each pad is proposed to hold 50,000 residents in the event of rising sea levels continuing. This project uses “scenario planning” in order to get brand’s and businesses to “think the unthinkable” when tackling the growing issue of climate change.

Chapter Three Dreamtelligence >Definition of Dreamtelligence >Dreamtelligence Creations

“The ability to dream, to spot what might otherwise be hidden, and to innovate to create what previously could only be imagined, will increasingly seperate the winners and the losers.” Scott Anthony, President of Innosight

> DEFINITION OF DREAMTELLIGENCE A new, vital and visionary way ahead that embraces science, techonology, play, fantasy and “wild sky thinking” to create products that are both revolutionary and unexpected. Global and Economic uncertainities are forcing us to see beyond what is rational and practical and use our imaginations and dreams to identify solutions in a visionary way. Dreamtelligence can be used for anything from food shortages to religious issues. The future is moving away from “Brainstorming” and rational ideas to a more visionary solution using “Heartstorming” to make things happen.

THE AQUADUCT BIKE Safe and secure sources of drinking water is becoming a growing concern around the world. The Aquaduct bike is designed to solve these issues and more. It works by using pedal power to drive the water through a filter into the clean tank. The bike can carry enough water for the entire family, having the ability to hold up to 8litres; and can filter whilst moving of stationary. “A pedal powered concept vehicle that transports, filters and stores water.

Chapter Four Water: The Most Powerful Element > Water as an Element > Ice Hotel

“Nothing in the world is more flexible and yielding than water. Yet when it attacks the firm and the strong, noone can withstand it, because they have no way to change it.” Lao Tzu, Philospher

> WATER: THE MOST POWERFUL ELEMENT Seventy percent of the human body is made up from water, Seventy percent of earth’s surface is made up from water and Ninety percent of plant’s life is made up of water. Water is the most powerful force of mother nature, whether it be floods, snow storms or tsunamis. Many catastophic events have been conducted due to water clearing an area on earth, destroying mankind. It is guaranteed that in a lifetime you will witness the effect of mother nature, and who’s going to stop her? There is no way of changing how water reacts. The Ocean floors are opening and the heat is rising, is there a chance that Atlantis may re-appear? There has been many speculation as what lives beneath the sea; it really is a world of it’s own, with secrets yet to be discovered.

THE ICE HOTEL The first and largest hotel made from snow and ice is situated within Jukkasjarvi, Sweden. The hotel is built fresh every year, embracing the local water source from the River Torne as their starting point. Not only is this hotel an inspiring art project yet it also attracts visitors from around the world. Visitors pay on average £800 to optionally sleep in arctic conditions of -5 degrees. The latest trend in Swedish Lapland seems to be getting married within the on-sight church at the hotel. Is this a sign of what’s to come in the future? Ice and water are definitely here to stay and with water being the most powerful element it won’t be long until it dominates earth itself. What’s next in the world of ice, we have hotels and churches? Anything is Possible.

Chapter Five Atlantis > What is Atlantis? > Platos Atlantis

“The collection predicted a future in which the ice cap would melt, the waters would rise and life on earth would have to evolve in order to live beneath the sea once more or perish. Humanity would go back to the place from whence it came.” Alexander Mcqueen, on Platos Atlantis Collection.

> WHAT IS ATLANTIS? Atlantis is a beautiful island, that sunk to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean “in a single day and night of misfortune” after a failed attempt to invade Athens. Researchers dispute whether the story of Atlantis is true or whether the account was inspired by ancient traditions. Real or not Atlantis today inspires literature, films and fashion trends. Afterall, Mermaids need to live somewhere.

“I don’t think it makes sense to play safe in these times, at times like this the world needs fantasy. Not reality, we have enough reality today.” Alexander Mcqueen

“We came from water and now, with the help of stem cell technology, we must go back to survive.”

Summary

The foundations of Trendition came from the third life and the conflict between tradition and modernity, natural and manmade. The third life is a life not so many people today are aware of, a life that exists in the future with floating Ecopolis and Atlantis. The life of Trendition.
