Precedent Analysis

Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.

According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols? (100 words Maximum)

Diagrams are used as medium between spatial relationships and time.Whereas, symbols are used as representations of specific objects. Diagram is used especially to describe time, space and their relationships in an organized manner. In addition, diagrams are portrayed in precise and definite way. On the other hand, symbols can be used to portray abstract space. Furthermore, the limitations of diagrams made design concrete and resistant to constant change while signs demonstrate virtual and nonrealistic design. Thus, it is crucial to understand the relationship between actual and symbol depicted design. Plan of the Pavillion with openings

Halbe, Rolland. Burnham Pavillion, 2009. Archdaily. Assessed March 10, 2018. https://www.archdaily.com/33110/burnham-pavilion-zaha-hadid

Section of the Pavillion

Plan of the Pavillion

Firstly, the base lines for roof were traced on section of the pavillion. It was then raised vertically to create the entire structure. The uneven ground plane was also traced and raised. The inner skin of the pavillion was also created by lofting the curve. Lastly, the openings are created by trimming the extrusions on the pavillion surface.

Isometric

Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture. Burnham Pavillion

Herzberger discusses how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use. (100 words Maximum)

The isometric mainly shows the position of openings and exterior design. The intricate roof design was modelled based on sectional view of the pavillion. In terms of circulation, the model has mixed private and public zones. Some enclosed parts of the roof provide private spaces while main public space was in the middle of pavillion between transition of two openings. Moreover, the design of the pavillion allows people to wander around inside. In addition, the key concept of the precedent study is the effect of the versatileness of the design on people.

According to Hertzberger, design should not be limited to only one purpose and be flexible to various usages. Burnham pavillion by Zaha Hadid Architects clearly portrays this versatility of design. The fluid outer skin of the pavillion not only intrigue people but also represent multifunctional use. The inner fabric of the pavillion also allows people to explore along its passage. Moreover, the shell-shaped pavillion was created using reusable goods. Furthermore, the fabric of the pavillion is used to display the installation processes. Thus, design fluidity of Burnham Pavillion was evident in both exterior and interior structure.

Threshold Diagram

The above diagram shows the differentiation of public and private zones and the movements within the pavillion. Different colours were used to show different zones. Moreover, the arrows show the entrance and movements through and in the pavillion.

The diagram portrays each layer of pavillion to show the intervals between them. The transition between two openings serve as main public area. The inner skin of the pavillion also affects the circulation..
