WEEK 9 READING: PERSPECTIVE AS SYMBOLIC FORM

INVISIBLE CITY: Isidora

Question 1: What are Durer’s rules for perspectival projection? (Maximum 100 words) Durer’s rules for perspectival projection are - by determining the line extended from the eye perpendicular to the plane, it is found that perpendiculars have central vanishing point. - parallels have a common vanishing point in accordance with the planes in which they are laid. - If the lines form a 45-degree angle with the picture plane, the distance is the same between vanishing point to the central vanishing point and from the eye to the picture. - Although dimensions change as the object becomes further, the length can be calculated through the position of the perspective point.

Question 2: Describe homogenous space? (Maximum 100 words)

A homogenous space is the constructed space which can not exist its own in reality. The elements contain points connected to each other with the purpose of showing the location of the objects only. Thus, the content can be interpreted differently since the main purpose is to show only the ideal representation. Thus, homogenous space is the functional space.

QUAD PERSPECTIVE 1 + 2

PERSPECTIVE SCENE 1 + 2 This perspective focuses on the centre of the quad to put the spotlight on the old man daydreaming. This perspective kind of separates the reality from the imagination without the actual separation.

This perspective also focuses on city square where the young boy is playing. The perspective also separates the reality from dreams by the use of different perspectives.

6

The perspective focuses on the old man, sitting and daydreaming at the city square. The desires for perfect city turns into memories with the old man as a young boy. The characters in this scene are those that are in reality. The presence of violin and telescope represents the timeles memories of the old man.

The main focus of the scene is the young boy who is the imaginative character of the memories of the old man. The characters in the perspective are the imaginative characters from the old man’s dreams. The clouds were also put to show the non-realistic experience.

Cities & MeMORies: isiDORA

Question 1: IWhat is the difference between autographic and allographic practice? (Maximum 100 words) There are two types of art forms: autographic and allographic. According to philosopher Nelson Goodman, autographic arts are those which maintain their authenticity through a direct contact between the arts and the maker. Examples of autographic arts are sculptures and paintings. On the other hand, allographic arts are those which can be reproduced without the direct contact of author. For instance, music and poetry are allographic arts which can be reproduced based on one’s own interpretation and notation. Thus, allographic arts uses notations due to its ephemeral nature of the produced works.

Key Crowds Movement Passage of Time

Question 2: Why do architects need new representational techniques? (Maximum 100 words)

Light/Dark

The quad represents a single fragment of the old man’s memories. The movement around the quad demonstrates the path of the authour experiencing the memories of the old man. Moreover, the movement also shows the movement of the characters. The passage of time shows that the authour travels from the present reality to the past imagination in the journey. Light and dark contrast is also portrayed to focus on the real and unreal elements.

Mood(Light/Heavy) Stare/Glance Camera

In the past, representations are used to portrayed stationary objects. Nonetheless, these representations are not enough to express the complex relationship between the cities. A large amount of information in the city is shown through the interactions between the capital and its residents . Therefore, in order to represent these complex relationships of the buildings, architects are in need of new notational techniques to fully describe their design.
