When considering the body copy of these grids it needed to be content that was relevant to the research that I had been doing, this naturally led to the idea of using my actual final dissertation to fill the grid layouts.

So as not to create a distraction from the overall image created, it was necessary to justify the type, this eliminated and large gaps or white spaces and created a smooth flowing layout.

After deciding that the dissertation would be used as content, the scale needed to be flexible to fit this in.

A1 was the only appropriate size, this works well as the large scale shows the grids with higher impact and a clearer view.

So as to fit in with one of the key principles a bright white stock was used. This allowed maximum contrast between the foreground and the background, allowing for a clear figure and ground principle example.

Proximity / Hierarchical Grid

The final four pieces work as a set of four, the four different grids work in conjunction with the four principles that were chosen; similarity, simplicity, symmetry and proximity. These were the most appropriate principles for this specific type of design. The base of the design is one

of the four grids, the dissertation itself is then arranged into designated text boxes that are set out to create certain grouping techniques. The overall result shows that the grid and principle works successfully together, it is clear to see the grouping patterns and how it is working effectively.

Column Grid

Sometimes called a block grid or single column grid, the manuscript grid is the simplest grid structure. It’s mainly a large rectangular area taking up most of the space inside a format. They are good for extensive and continuous blocks of text. They’re used in books and long essays.

Hierarchical Grid

Hierarchical grids are commonly found on the web.

They’re based more on an intuitive placement of elements, which still conforms to the needs of the information. Customized proportions are typically used in hierarchical grids instead of regularly repeated intervals.

Typeface:

The tight layout of Calibri gives it a flexibility that allows it to work in a wide range of text sizes. It is a humanist sans serif typeface, known for its warmth and rounded lines. This works well within the booklet, it is easy and clear to read and is simple enough to work well with a background grid.

Modular Grid

Modular grids are like column grids with the addition of horizontal divisions marked by rows. The columns and rows and the gutters between each create a matrix of cells or modules. Modular grids are good for complex projects that require more control than a column grid can offer.

De Stijl Grid

Headed by Dutch artists Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg, De Stijl rejected pre-war decorative tendencies and pushed Cubism to new extremes: total abstraction consisting of only the most basic design components, vertical and horizontal lines, primary colours
