RESEARCH
Research for this project began by taking a look through previous art work done for the work of chosen artist - Alt-J. From the bright colours to the abstract shapes inspiration was taken from all aspects of the designs to understand the tone they were aiming to communicate with the audience. Research then branched into event posters and interest began to form in creating a design that would stand out from other gig and Below is the Delta symbol, this is the result of pressing ‘Alt’ and ‘J’ on a keyboard and has become the symbol at the root of the identity of the band.
event posters that were displayed around the city. Looking at tone, audience and the message being communicated this led into the focus of layout and colour being a large playing part of creating a poster that would jump out. Looking into the band members themselves was also key to understanding the overall personality of the band, beginning to put together a visual of their characteristics and what the band represents.

INITIAL IDEAS
Following on from the research it seemed logical to place a strong emphasis on the delta symbol strongly related the Alt - J and their brand identity and background story. It was at this point that the key information is necessary to mocking up some layouts, the name of the band, and possibly the supporting act should be the main feature text wise. The following information should also be present; the date, the time, the venue,
ALT - J
the website or platform in which the audience is able to purchase tickets. All of this information needs to be clearly presented and easy to read immediately. The design of the poster needs to stand out amongst others, their current poster is pasted onto the posted boards around town and it is easy for posters to be lost amongst others. A specific characteristic needs to be designed so this poster catches the eye first.

DEVELOPMENT
Experimentation with colour, layout, medium and stock was the next step, to find a combination of the four that worked in harmony with one another. The colours were initially taken from an image related to the band and some mock-ups were designed with this palette before being taken to a neon selection of each version. The neon was representative of the current poster they were using for advertisement, a simple
neon orange, this was pushed further into a range of neons. The typeface is clear and concise, a simple sans serif designed to convey the information in a highly readable manor. The layout is a centred design with focus on the imagery, the type at the bottom allows the audiences eyes to be guided from top to bottom in the most methodical and logic pattern ensuring that all areas of the design work together to communicate.

To the right the layout is a simple centred design with a grid of three columns by five rows, this is restrictive enough to create enough structure but offers room for movement if and when is necessary. The design is purposely balanced to create that even visual with heavy imagery at the top followed by all type information below to create an equal amount of visuals across the entire design.

FINAL / CONTEXT
As a final design this event poster is successful is creating a dramatic and loud impact amongst other designs, it communicates a message in a loud and fun way. Printing on the stock was very successful, after experimentation with how to prepare the handmade stock it became apparent that the heat press was key to creating the ideal surface to screen print onto. The scale was A3 which would be slightly too small for
where it would need to be placed, however due to paper making restrictions this was the only size it could be done at for now. For further prints it would be necessary to produce this at a much larger scale, potentially up to A1. The gradient of the colour worked smoothly and the type has been produced to a standard that is crisp and clear enough to be visible at a distance. The use of white space has worked really well.
