To add something more to an appointment card that’s a bit different sets it apart from all the others. From the research I’ve done onto different processes the four above I think are the most interesting. It needs to be designed at the standard 3.5inch x 2.5inch format as this fits the best in the purse or wallet of the customer, hence they have less chance of losing it. Foiling and embossing is the strongest as it combines two different processes that offer two completely different finishes that work well together to create a sophisticated finish.

RESEARCH

An appointment card is sometimes something that the client has to keep for a long period of time, advance bookings for bug events such as weddings are quite frequent at the salon. This needs to be considered when choosing the stock, it needs to be a thick stock that wont bend or crease easily, but at the same time it still needs to be able to fit into a purse r wallet slot. Some form of coating or laminating could be useful for making it last longer and stay in a better condition.

These two designs are for business cards but it’s the style of them that I’m more focused on, they’re just different to the stereotypical design, they’re more minimal and the white space catches my eye much quicker than overcomplicated designs.

RATIONALE

JESSICA JOHNSON

Purpose To create an appointment card to give to customers upon booking their next appointment, it is an important part of the stationary in a hairdressers, it is proof of the correct time and also allows the customer to keep something to remind them.

Audience The audience would be the clients that have their hair done at Mr Henri’s, it would also be prospective clients who might see this at a friends house and be interested.

Message The message will be to communicate the service, it needs to obviously demonstrate it is a hair salon and state the information needed for the clients next appointment.

Tone of Voice The tone of voice will be classy and sophisticated, it needs to show elegance and professionalism to represent the business in a positive manor.

Format The appointment cards we use at the minute are the same size as a standard business card; 3.5inch x 2.5 inch. This is the size that I will be keeping for this design at it fits perfectly into a purse or wallet, this lessens the chance of the customer losing their card before their appointment.

Materials This will be printed on Harman stock, 350 gsm. This means it will be sturdy and durable but it will also still be thin enough to fit easily in the allocated purse and wallet slots. It will be matt with a feature, this could be done by a specific process to give it an edge.

Placement/Distribution As this is an appointment card it will be placed in the shop on the till, it will be given to customers upon booking the appointment.

Must Do’s/Must Dont’s/Time Frame I must create something that is practical I must create something that is classy I must not create a design that is stereotypical or tacky I must not stray from specific dimensions Time Frame: Complete by 20th March

DESIGN CHOICES

3.5 inch

2.5 inch

Colour The colour palettes chosen are specifically quite subtle, there are no bright colours or gender specific colours. I need to keep it quite neutral so that it isn’t biased to women or men, it becomes easy to make it quite girly but my audience is both genders. The red will be for appointments made around the festive Christmas period, this will make them stand out more. The black and white will be the key colour scheme with the grey representing the silver which will be used to foil.

Logo Creating the logo I had to keep in mind the specification given to me. As a result of these the logo is clean and obvious, it clearly symbolises the service of hairdressing through the use of equipment incorporated into the letter. The comb is an obvious item that everyone connects with a salon environment and would be recognisable before turning over the card.

Foiling On the front side of the card there will be a foiled design, this will be done in silver as this is classy and sophisticated and the reflection of the silver is representative of a mirror reflection. It will be done for the logo only so as not to overcomplicate.

Design & Typeface The reverse side of the card was designed keeping simple in mind, the colour scheme continued and the negative space was key to not overcrowding the layout. The typefaces I used were ‘Riesling’ and ‘Champagne and Limousines’. They were the chosen combination and worked really well together due to one being quite extravagant and decorative to a more clean and simple sans serif for all information on the reverse side.

FINAL DESIGN

The final design is practical and looks clean and tidy. The foiling on the front makes it seem classy and adds something different to what you would usually receive in a hairdressers. The black and white colour scheme is neutral and unbiased, it is sleek and will fit in with the colour scheme of the salon which is constantly changing. The typefaces work well together and the key information is all that is on the card, to keep some white space is important so as not to overcrowd the layout.
