SNOW TOLERANT VEGETABLES Snow on the winter vegetable garden does not mean the end of harvest.

S

now will insulate winter crops from freezing temperatures and protect them until harvest. A killing frost or freeze will do more damage to winter vegetables than snow. Carrots, turnips, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage, chard, and head lettuce can be harvested from under a blanket of snow. Scallions and fall leeks to the size of scallions can be harvested from under snow. Onions can remain in the garden under snow if a protective layer of mulch lies in between. Parsnips and Brussels sprouts will taste sweeter

after being covered by snow. If plant cell damaging freezing temperatures accompany snow, protect crops with mulch, plastic tunnels, or cold frames. Loose straw or fallen leaves can insulate plants from freezing temperatures as well. The best time for harvesting cold-weather crops from under snow temperatures is when temperatures are in the high 20s or low 30s, especially if you are uncovering only a portion of the crop for harvest and leaving the rest for later harvest.

Crops that can survive under snow—but not sustained freezing temperatures or ice–include asparagus, rhubarb, beets, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, cress, rutabaga, spinach, endive, horseradish, kohlrabi, kale, leek lettuce, onions, parsley, parsnips, radishes, and turnips.

Tesco faces legal threats for using ‘fake farm brand’ Retail giant Tesco is facing legal threats for using the name of a genuine farm to use on the packaging of its 'fake farm brands'.

T

he Feedback charity, an organisation that campaigns to end food waste, is backing the owner of a genuine farm called Woodside Farm, a free-range pig farm in Nottinghamshire. The owner of Woodside Farm claims to sell better quality produce than the supermarket giant, which has used the same name since 2016. The backing stems from the charity’s new campaign, “Total Bull”, which calls out the “biggest bull” on supermarket shelves. Feedback said it is awarding the first “Total Bull award” to Tesco for their “unflinching commitment” to fake farm branding. Supermarkets have been selling meat under fake farm names, which farmers have criticised for deliberately

encouraging consumers to believe that the meat is sourced from small-scale producers.

shoppers know, behind the bucolic mirage could lie a highintensity, unsustainable mega farm.”

The industry has frequently reacted angrily to fake branding, accusing retailers of misleading consumers and riding on the coattails of the trust UK farmers have built.

Despite Tesco’s choice of very British-sounding names, the company’s website acknowledges that not all of the meat sold in their Woodside Farms pork range will have come from UK farms.

‘Bucolic image’ Tesco are not the only supermarkets to use made up farm names in their branding. Other fake farm ranges include Asda’s ‘Farm Stores’, which features an oldfashioned barn and tractor on the label, Lidl’s ‘Birchwood Farm’ meat range (which is marketed as ‘Strathvale Farm’ in Scotland), Aldi’s ‘Ashfield Farm’ and Marks and Spencer’s ‘Oakham’ chicken. The charity states: “For all

6 | Working Farmer | www.workingfarmer.co.uk

Feedback added: “Even for meats which are sourced from UK farms, such as ‘Willow Farms’ chicken, some meat may have been produced under conditions very far from those implied by their labels.” Last year, the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) wrote to formally complaint to the Chartered Trading Standards Institute over the use of ‘fake’ farm branding by retailers on some food products.

'Regrettable move': Arla UK director sacked for 'issues of corporate governance' An Arla Board of Director for the United Kingdom has been sacked for "issues of corporate governance". The Board of Directors of Arla Foods amba has received notification from the UKAF board, the farmer governing body of Arla Foods’ UK cooperative, that it has taken the decision to terminate the membership of Mr Jonathan Ovens. It has been determined that serious failings in corporate governance by Mr Ovens in his role as Chairman of Emerald Debtco Limited are prejudicial to the interests of UKAF. On behalf of the Board of Directors of Arla Foods, chairman Åke Hantoft states: “As a consequence of the decision taken by the UKAF Board to terminate the membership of Jonathan Ovens, which the Arla Foods amba Board agrees with, Mr Ovens is no longer eligible to serve as a board member of Arla Foods amba and

therefore leaves open a position as UK representative on the Arla Foods amba Board of Directors.” The process to elect the replacement to the Arla Foods Board of Directors will now commence and the UKAF board will discuss what steps are required to fill the open position. Arla Foods will communicate to its members when a replacement is confirmed. 'Regrettable step' A statement released from UKAF Chairman Johnnie Russell regarding the decision made says: “This regrettable step has had to be taken as a last measure in a protracted process to resolve issues of corporate governance within Emerald Debtco Limited and takes place with immediate effect. Mr Ovens has been offered a direct contract by UKAF for the supply of milk.

“As part of the wider Arla Foods amba Cooperative owned by over 11,000 farmers the UKAF Board must act in the best interests of both its UK farmers and all Arla Food’s farmer owners across Europe and in accordance with the Arla Foods Corporate Social Responsibility guidelines. “The decision means that Mr Ovens can no longer remain part of Arla Foods UK or a board member of Arla Foods amba and therefore leaves open a UKAF board position and that of a UK representative on the Arla Foods amba Board of Directors. “The UKAF board, governed by its byelaws, will discuss what steps are required to fill the open positions and will communicate to its members when the process has been decided.”

Wales wide approach considered to tackle nitrate pollution from farms Wales will introduce a whole-country approach to tackling nitrate pollution from agriculture and improve water quality, the government has confirmed.

F

ollowing an extensive consultation on Nitrate Vulnerable Zones last year, work is now underway to develop a balance of "regulatory measures, voluntary measures and investment". This will also include exploring further options to provide farmers with flexibility, where these would achieve the same or better outcomes than a regulatory approach. Most respondents in the consultation recognised the significant impact nitrate pollution is having on water, businesses and human and environmental well-being throughout Wales and agreed further action was needed. The majority of nitrate in

groundwater in the UK is derived from diffuse pollution from agriculture, with the rest from sewage sludge disposal to land, atmospheric deposition and point sources. According to the British Geological Survey, the loading has significantly increased due to post-1945 agricultural intensification due both to ploughing of grassland and to increased fertiliser applications. 'Major source' The Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs Lesley Griffiths said agricultural use of nitrates is a "major source of water pollution". “Poor nutrient management is still a major problem across

10 | Working Farmer | www.workingfarmer.co.uk

Wales. Pollution of this kind is entirely preventable and is simply not acceptable in the 21st century. “We should not, at the end of 2017, see significant stretches of some of our most well known and popular rivers largely devoid of fish, proving just how much work remains to be done. “Wales’ waters need much greater protection from agricultural pollution and that is why I am minded to introduce a whole Wales approach to tackling nitrate pollution from agriculture.” Ms Griffiths said Wales has some of the finest countryside and stretches of water in Europe, which people have a "duty to protect

NEWS and enhance".'Details and implications' However, the Farmers’ Union of Wales (FUW) has given a cautious welcome to the announcement. FUW President Glyn Roberts, said: “This seems to be a far more proportionate way forward than some of the options that had been proposed, but we need time to assess the details and their implications. “As a member of the three groups which will be looking at these approaches, the FUW looks forward to working on approaches which are proportionate proactive voluntary approaches which deliver positive outcomes. “NVZ and other regulatory approaches are blunt instruments which often do not tackle the main sources of problems, and what can be complex problems. More targeted and flexible approaches can therefore better address the real

causes of problems, as well as increasing engagement with industry.” 'Evidence is clear' NFU Cymru has welcomed the plans. President Stephen James said the "evidence is clear" that there are a range of issues and sectors affecting water quality in Wales, however, the farming union said it recognises the role that farmers have to play in contributing to improved water quality in the years ahead. “Farmers take their environmental responsibilities extremely seriously and NFU Cymru has always championed an approach that sees the Union working in collaboration with Welsh Government and other partners,” Mr James added. “We are pleased that the Cabinet Secretary has made reference to the off-set scheme that has been operating successfully by a group of First Milk farmers

in the Cleddau Catchment. This scheme, championed by NFU Cymru members Will Prichard and Mike Smith, was highlighted in NFU Cymru’s consultation response, and subsequently, as an example of a workable alternative delivering measurable reductions in nitrates. “We are encouraged that the Cabinet Secretary intends to work in partnership with stakeholders to explore a Wales-wide approach to tackling issues influencing water quality through a flexible, outcomefocussed approach that will allow farmers to deliver improvements in water quality. “The Cabinet Secretary has rightly recognised the role of investment support as this highlights the significant costs associated with slurry and manure storage infrastructure on farm, and the Union welcomes this.”

Animal Housing

Housing Cattle

H

ousingWhether cows are housed in cubicles, straw yards or cow sheds, in order to maximise performance and to ensure satisfactory standards of welfare, the accommodation must at least provide for the animal’s most basic needs. As an absolute minimum, the housing must provide a comfortable, clean, well-drained and dry lying area together with shelter from adverse weather, space to allow the animal to move, lie down and rise freely as well as access to adequate food and water. All housing for cattle should include an adequate provision of calving pens and sick pens for isolation of sick or injured animals. All cattle farms should also have provision for isolation and quarantine of bought-in animals in a separate building, unless the herd is genuinely closed and never buys in replacement or breeding animals. If the housing system does not provide for these basic needs, then not only will both production and welfare be compromised, but it is likely that you are also failing to comply with the welfare codes and the law relating to animal welfare in your area.

Cubicles CubiclesCubicle management should be similarly well planned, as uncomfortable or unsuitable cubicles can lead to poor occupancy, wet and soiled cubicle beds, increased risk of udder disease and lameness as well as physical damage to the cows. Appropriate cubicle length will accommodate the need for both forward lunging space and rear clearance to ensure the animal doesn’t soil the bedding. Equally important, the cubicle should be wide enough for the cow to lie down without rubbing against the partitions, but narrow enough to prevent them turning around. The required dimensions of a cubicle are dependent on the size of the cow, however DairyCo have created a useful guide to calculating the right sized cubicle for your system. To compliment a good cubicle set up, a suitable depth and choice of bedding will ensure comfort when lying down as well as preventing knee and hock injuries. When choosing bedding, consider: Thermal insulation properties Softness, Traction, The use of lime under fresh bedding, not on top of it, Low risk of abrasion, Easily maintained, Cost effective Cubicle bases other than concrete should also be considered. Sand (must be washed) and limestone, in particular, have advantages over concrete-based beds with regard to cow comfort, but require careful maintenance.

14 | Working Farmer | www.workingfarmer.co.uk

Loose Housing Appropriate design of yards, avoiding dampness and contamination from water troughs and narrow entry points, is equally important. Separate housing of first calving heifers should be considered (see also Herd Health for more on disease risks associated with housing) The lying area must be under cover and bedded. The additional area may be inside or outside and does not have to be bedded.

Loafing Areas A loafing area is a space cows can use for behaviours other than feeding or lying- such as displaying oestrus behaviour and social bonding. Cattle can spend a lot of time utilising outdoor loafing areas, often using the area to regulate body temperature when humidity and temperature are high. It is advised that the loafing area size is 120% of the cubicle lying area. Loafing areas can include nonfeed passageways and non-lying areas. Although loafing is provided at pasture, the weather limits utilisation of such areas and thus an indoor loafing area with access to an outdoor loafing area is desirable. As with housing, the amount of slurry in the loafing areas should be managed, and scraped at least twice daily to prevent health problems and encourage use.

Cow Comfort A comfortable cow is a happy cow, and a happy healthy cow in turn, proves to be a profitable cow. Grooming aids are a great addition to any farm, and are often used extensively by cattle once installed. Grooming is a natural social activity for cows, and brushes have proven to positively contribute to the welfare of housed animals. Working Farmer | www.workingfarmer.co.uk | 15

UK dairy industry surpasses environmental targets The UK dairy sector has achieved an 18.05% energy efficiency improvement since 2008, according to recently published results.

W

ith this improvement, the sector has already exceeded the 2020 Climate Change Agreement and Dairy Roadmap targets of 13.6% and 15% respectively. The 2020 package is a set of binding legislation to ensure that EU Memebr States meets its climate and energy targets for the year 2020. The package sets three key targets: 20% cut in greenhouse gas emissions (from 1990 levels); 20% of EU energy from renewables; 20% improvement in energy efficiency.

The results for the dairy sector, from the Environment Agency in the Climate Change Agreement biennial progress report, are complemented by those of the 2017 Dairy UK Environmental Benchmarking Report, which details substantial environmental improvements within the UK dairy sector. This includes a 23% increase in water efficiency and a 30% increase in the amount of waste recovered or recycled since 2008. The main findings of the 2017 Dairy UK Environmental Benchmarking Report are;18% increase in primary energy

efficiency (kWh/tonne); 23% increase in water efficiency (m3/tonne); 17.5% increase in raw effluent efficiency (m3/ tonne); 56% decrease in COD per m3 raw effluent and a 30% shift in the destination of waste away from landfill and towards recovery or recycling. Dr Judith Bryans, chief executive of Dairy UK commented on the results, saying: “These are incredibly positive results which demonstrate the effective steps taken by the UK dairy industry to reduce its environmental footprint and meet the targets of The Dairy Roadmap.

UK bird flu threat remains low following Netherlands outbreak The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) says the risk from avian influenza to commercial poultry in the UK remains low.

D

efra reviewed bird flu risk in the United Kingdom following a new outbreak across the North Sea in the Netherlands. A 16,000-bird flock of fattening ducks in Flevoland was culled following confirmation of highly pathogenic H5N6 virus. The same farm was infected last winter with H5N8 - the strain that spread across Europe and the UK last year. Some 13 cases were found in the UK last winter, although none involved layers. Despite a number of new cases of avian influenza in Europe, Defra has decided not to increase the threat level in this country. The risk for commercial poultry remains low; the risk for wild birds remains medium. Migratory birds In its latest risk update, Defra says: "Many of the wild migratory waterfowl have now arrived to overwinter in northern Europe and the UK from their breeding grounds in Central and North Eurasia." Indeed, many wigeon

started arriving in the UK in September. Compared to the situation at this time in 2016, the outlook for H5N8 in Central Europe is much more favourable with relatively fewer cases in wild birds.

increase in detections anticipated since the last report has not materialised in November at least but other factors such as cold weather movement also need to be considered.

"With the exception of the wild duck case in Germany on the 23rd October, all the wild bird outbreaks (and poultry outbreaks) reported in Europe since the last report are south of the main migratory waterfowl flyway to the UK.

"It is possible that local maintenance of H5N8 virus could still be occurring at sites in northern Europe from October and spread via other routes such as ongoing outbreak locations in Italy and Bulgaria. "The latest case of H5N6 in the Netherlands is a significant new event that merits close monitoring of any developments.

"Thus, on this basis, it appears less likely that wild birds will bring H5N8 to the UK from these southerly regions of Europe. "However, we cannot rule out that the wild birds are succumbing to infection but outcomes such as high mortality (as observed last year) is not occurring because many birds in the population are likely to have been exposed last year and survived infection." 'Significant new event' It says: "Although new incursions of H5N8 HPAI through wild bird migration to Europe remains continuous risk up until February, the

18 | Working Farmer | www.workingfarmer.co.uk

"Furthermore, a cold winter in Central Europe would encourage more waterfowl to migrate west and into the UK up until February and freezing temperatures in the UK (as being experienced at present) could mean waterfowl move away from coastal sites to more sheltered inland areas." Defra is advising all poultry keepers to review biosecurity measures and business continuity plans in case the risk of AI increases over the coming months.

UK will be 'worse-off' under most plausible Brexit scenarios, report finds The UK will be economically worse-off outside of the EU under most plausible scenarios, according to economic analysis. Whether Brexit is judged to be success or not will depend to some degree on its economic impact, according to the influential US thinktank the Rand corporation. Much of the debate around Brexit has been focused on a 'hard' or 'soft Brexit', which relates to whether the UK should leave the Single Market and the Customs Union. However, there are a range of different trade opportunities and arrangements that could happen between the UK and European Union, and other countries, such as the U.S., post-Brexit. The chosen trade arrangement will largely depend on the UK's negotiations with the EU. 'No deal' Rand has explored eight plausible post-Brexit trade scenarios involving the UK, EU and U.S. after Brexit. Game theory insights were also used to create a better understanding of how a variety of factors might affect the outcome of Brexit

negotiations. The UK is likely to be economically worse-off outside of the EU under most plausible scenarios, particularly if the UK leaves the EU with no trade deal. This would reduce future GDP by around five per cent over ten years, which is a loss of $140 billion. Under WTO rules, the EU would also lose out economically, but nowhere near the same proportion as the UK — about 0.7 per cent of its overall GDP, which is $97 billion. Indeed, the British farming industry has stated its worry of the catastrophe a ‘no deal’ scenario and moving to WTO ‘most-favoured nation’ status would bring, severely impacting the industry's ability to trade. One report has concluded that a ‘no-deal’ outcome would lead to a collapse in trade, with a 90% drop in beef exports and 53% drop in lamb exports from the UK to the EU. UK-EU-US agreement The Rand says it is in the UK's best interests to achieve

some sort of open trading and investment relationship post-Brexit. The most beneficial trade scenario would be a trilateral UK-EU-US agreement, but this is seen as very unlikely in the current political environment because President Donald Trump does not approve of the TransAtlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). Under this scenario, UK GDP would be 2.2 per cent higher – or 7.1 percentage points better – than under the WTO rules scenario. The report says this scenario would make the UK better off compared to its current membership with the EU. But farmers are wary that this scenario could flood Europe, and the UK, with cheaper, sub-standard produce, which will have a big impact on British farm incomes and food safety. Overall, the thinktank says it is in the best interests of the UK, and to a lesser extent the EU, to work together to achieve some sort of trade deal postBrexit.

CLAAS presents the new SCORPION series o well proven SCORPION models from CLAAS have with LIEBHERR The now presents a completely new SCORPION series, w The new SCORPION models offer greater handling performance, thanks to increased lifting capacity and new advanced driverassistance systems, improved driver comfort and efficiency, along with improved safety and reliability. These benefits stem from a range of new features, such as DYNAMIC POWER for engine management, the new SMART LOADING driver-assistance system for fine control of the working hydraulics and overload protection, a fully automatic parking brake, controlled crab steering as a fourth steering option and an all-new cab configuration. Better handling performance All new SCORPION models boast improved working hydraulics and increased lifting capacity of 3.2 to 5.6 t, enabling optimal handling performance and productivity, thanks to quick cycle times. From December 2018, an additional SCORPION model will be available to meet the highest handling performance demands, with a 6.0 t lifting capacity and 9.0 m lifting height.

Another major improvement in the new series is the high-performance drive, which guarantees particularly convenient and precise manoeuvring. The proven hydrostatic VARIPOWER or VARIPOWER PLUS transmission has three speeds, which are easy to control using the joystick. Safety and driver comfort are guaranteed, thanks to an electrohydraulic parking brake which is automatically activated if the driver leaves the seat, the machine stops or the engine is switched off. When the driver puts a foot on the accelerator to travel in a set direction, the parking brake is automatically deactivated. As in the previous series, all models come with Deutz diesel engines, which develop up to 156 hp (115 kW) and meet Stage IV (Tier 4) emissions standards. The new DYNAMIC COOLING concept The existing airflow system has been further optimised in the new SCORPION series, thanks to the new DYNAMIC COOLING concept. DYNAMIC COOLING automatically controls the fan speed and guarantees demanddriven cooling

of the engine, no matter what the operating conditions. Air is drawn in at the front and flows around the engine and before exiting out the back of the machine. The reversing fan system also works fully automatically, based on the settings selected by the operator. When working in particularly dirty conditions, the driver can also reverse the fan manually at any time, at the touch of a button. More models for every application CLAAS now has a machine for every application, having extended the product range to include the new SCORPION 741 and 1033 models. The SCORPION 741 is a compact, manoeuvrable all-rounder, boasting an above-average lifting capacity of over 4.0 t. The SCORPION 1033 has been developed for areas where a particularly long reach is needed. For example, with its lifting height of 9.75 m, bales can be easily stacked at greater heights, and dozing work can be carried out in grain stores. Proven quick-release plate As with all machines in the series, both models are equipped with the proven and robust SCORPION quick-release headstock, which is compatible with older attachments. In the new series, a side support for the telescopic arm is

of telehandlers, developed in cooperation

e been raising the bar in terms of telehandler technology for many years. CLAAS which has been developed in cooperation with Liebherr. now available for the 1033 and 741 to 635 models. This additional support provides even greater stability and protection of the machine when work involves significant extension of the arm and major lever action. For businesses in which the demands on the telehandler will not be so high, basic entry-level models without VARIPOWER are also available outside of Germany. The expertise of Liebherr In developing the new series, CLAAS has drawn on the expertise of Liebherr, the construction machinery specialists. This innovative family business will continue to collaborate with CLAAS on future projects. They worked together to develop an intelligent chassis and bonnet design for the new SCORPION models, which ensures optimal visibility. The attachment point for the telescopic boom now lies lower on the chassis, significantly expanding the field of view to the right and to the rear. Cab redesign The cabs in the new models have also been completely redesigned, and offer complete 360° visibility. All the important switches and controls have been sensibly arranged and are easy to operate. The central gauges/ indicating instruments have

been bundled together in a 3.5” screen, so that the operator can see all the important machine statuses at a glance, such as the speed, steering type or level of hydraulic oil. From spring 2018, a 7” display screen that combines all these functions will also be available as an option. Shorter cycle times with SMART LOADING The SMART LOADING system in the new SCORPION models combines all the systems to ensure optimum use of the machine’s capacity, and is equipped with automatic overload protection to ensure that the operating functions are always well coordinated. An automatic bucket return for loading operations with a set bucket position can also be included as an option, which the driver can set at the touch of a button on the joystick. SMART LOADING also enables fine control of the working hydraulics, to enable stacked goods to be positioned with greater accuracy. The speed of the working hydraulics can be easily halved via a toggle switch. Optimal engine speed for all applications With SMART ROADING and DYNAMIC POWER, the new SCORPION models have two systems to ensure an optimal engine speed, both on the road and during operation.

The enhanced SMART ROADING automatically adjusts the speed when accelerating and once the maximum speed is achieved. If lower output is required, the engine speed is automatically lowered. In the 756 and 746 models, DYNAMIC POWER regulates the engine speed based on the joystick movements. The use of both systems in tandem ensures a comfortable ride in all applications, saves fuel and reduces noise. Controllable crab steering In addition to the standard front steering, all-wheel steering and crab-steering mode, the new SCORPION models all come with an additional fourth manual crabsteering mode, as standard. In contrast to the traditional crab-steering mode, in this mode, the front axle can still be controlled, which offers distinct advantages for certain applications, such as compacting the edges of clamps or moving along the walls of buildings. In addition, all new telehandlers are optionally available with CLAAS TELEMATICS. The SCORPION 741 and 736 models can also be fitted with large 500 tyres, which offer improved stability and reduce ground pressure when working in the field.

NEWS

The Importance of Sprayer Testing Everyone will agree that accurate application of pesticides is not only desirable but essential whether for the environment, the consumer or the grower

A

ccurate and targeted use of pesticides is all part of modern agriculture. That’s why back in the mid 90’s the Chemical Application members of the Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA) devised a test for application machinery to make sure it was working as intended. In the early years of 2000 this test became the National Sprayer Testing Scheme as one of the main pillars of the Voluntary Initiative. NSTS now tests around 16,500 machines annually with the test also satisfying the requirements of the Sustainable Use Directive (SUD), which requires that all pesticide application equipment, sprayers, slug pellet applicators, granular applicators etc., need to be tested by 26th November 2016 and at regular intervals thereafter. NSTS is an accepted part of arable agriculture and requirement of the major crop assurance schemes and

supermarket protocols, requiring that farmers and growers have their sprayers inspected annually. This requirement continues with one of the annual tests satisfying the SUD requirements. The NSTS is available through a network of test centres who have qualified examiners available to inspect and confirm the equipment is of the standard required. The test is usually carried out at the machine owner’s premises and at a mutually agreed time. The examiner will charge for the inspection, the cost is commercial at the point of use. Additionally machine owners are free to use their nearest or preferred test centre. The operator or owner of the machine can prepare the sprayer for the test using a test sheet available from the NSTS website. Owners and operators are encouraged to take part in the test and will receive three NRoSO points for doing so. As confirmation of the result of the test the examiner will apply a pass sticker

to the machine and a copy of the test report form will be sent to the owner. Other copies are returned to NSTS Administration where the information is retained on a database of all tested machines. This information is available to Crop Assurance Certification Bodies and others for verification purposes. With the continued threat of more pesticides being lost, now is the time to contribute to accurate and targeted application procedures, NSTS testing helps achieve that. Having a NSTS test will also satisfy the Sustainable Use Directive which requires all sprayers to be tested by 26th November 2016. Find out more by visiting the NSTS website www.nsts.org.uk Duncan Russell NSTS Manager October 2016

Volvo has again proved its technological leadership, winning four awards at the Car Tech Awards 2018.

V

olvo was named Car Technology Brand of the Year for the second year running, while the Volvo XC60 was awarded Best Safety Technology for its revolutionary Steering Support system, Best SatNav for its Sensus Navigation, and Best Safest Car as a result of its remarkable Euro NCAP crash test result. The Car Tech Awards celebrate the best in-car technology launched over the past 12 months, as voted for by the experts from buyer’s guide Carbuyer and technology website Alphr.

Commenting on the awards, Stuart Milne, Editor of Carbuyer, said: “Volvo’s success in the Car Tech Awards is remarkable. The company scooped Car Technology Brand of the Year for the second year in succession. Our judges were impressed by the way Volvo refuses to rest on its laurels, developing a series of products and philosophies that build on its Vision 2020, that no one will be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo by 2020. “These include its commitment to stop producing cars powered

solely by petrol and diesel starting from 2019 – a scheme recognised by the United Nations – as well as the launch of an evasive steering system in its new XC60 and forging a close relationship with Google to develop better-connected cars. This is in addition to the continual and incremental improvement in new car technology that all customers can enjoy.” Every XC60 comes with Volvo’s groundbreaking Steering Support technology as standard. This automatically provides steering assistance in an

emergency to help avoid potential collisions. The judges were impressed, saying: “It should come as little surprise that a brand so closely associated with safety should take our Best Safety Technology award. The new Steering Support system is a development of the firm’s City Safety system. In situations where braking alone won’t avoid a collision, the XC60 is able to take charge of steering. With the system, Volvo claims a 45 per cent reduction in rear-end frontal crashes.” The XC60 was named Best Safest Car after its outstanding Euro NCAP crash test result, where it scored 98 per cent for adult occupant protection and 95 per cent for its safety assistance features. The XC60’s Sensus

Navigation system – also fitted as standard to every model – was praised by the judges as well. “Its display is a model of clarity and uses the same stunning, efficient design the brand is fast becoming synonymous with. It’s not style over substance, though. The large screen makes destinations easy to input, and efficient and accurate routes are displayed. The whole system is responsive, simple to use and sets a new benchmark.” Jon Wakefield, Managing Director of Volvo Car UK, said: “Winning such a wide range of Car Tech Awards highlights

the breadth and quality of industry-leading technology in our cars. These innovative features are designed to make our customers’ lives easier, safer and more enjoyable, and these awards prove that they do just that.” For more information on the Volvo range, and to use the new online configurator, please go to www.volvocars. com/uk
