COWORKING OFFICE
YOU BREW
01
Inspired by the historic H&C Coffee Company’s sign atop of the building, this coworking space is developed around the history of coffee and how it instinctively brings people together. Meant to serve as a gathering place, coffee shops have a distinct character and serve many purposes. The design for this coworking office is focused around a coffee shop culture, based on the idea that coffee shops are extensions of people’s front porches; a place to gather together. Coffee is a conduit of the social experience, so incorporating it within my community based areas is what drives the space planning of the design.
TECH START-UP OFFICES
Coffee is grown in an area of the globe called the Bean Belt, between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. This region has the best climate for the growth and development of coffee beans. The Bean Belt is translated to the floor plan as the central, community centered zone. Offering a space to collaborate, socialize, and interact with one another. Just as the beans grow and coffee is brewed, thoughts and ideas are created and developed within a coworking environment.

HIGHER EDUCATION
MOZAIKO
02
Focusing on the needs of a diverse international and domestic student population, I designed the space for Mozaiko, a new living-learning community on Virginia Tech’s campus. With an emphasis on the social, residential and academic needs and aspirations of the students, staff and community, I designed a space to enhance flexibility with integrated technology and creative design elements. Creating opportunities for residential learning and global exchange while meeting the requirements of higher education design, I bring forth a new idea of how living-learning communities can expand the idea of a classroom and a living space as one.
COMMUNITY KITCHEN
An ecosystem can be described as a system formed by the interaction of a community of organisms with their physical environment. Each organism is independent and different, but are all interrelated elements comprising a unified whole. Mozaiko, too, functions as an ecosystem, its “organisms” - the students and faculty - breathing life and energy into the space. As its inhabitants interact with the environment they are in and become one successful ecosystem, Mozaiko will evolve into a community, promoting self-discovery, personal growth and the sharing of ideas. Each individual plays their personal role in shaping the success of the community by sharing their diverse background and knowledge while interacting with their peers, as well as the built environment.
FLEXIBLE CLASSROOM LAYOUTS
WHY MOZAIKO? Social interaction has become one of the best ways for students to learn. Placing the living room outside of the suites encourages more social interaction and more opportunity to learn within the Mozaiko community.
COLLABORATE
BREAK-OUT
Stimulating and exciting spaces are where people want to be. More learning, socializing and studying can be produced in a stimulating environment. The bright colors, textures, and patterns within Mozaiko are designed to stimulate the brain!
SMALL GROUP
Resourceful amenities withing living learning spaces provide the resident with all they need in one place, offering a variety of helpful sources. An ecosystem provides all that an organism needs to function in the community and work as a whole. Mozaiko mimics this by offering residents with all the helpful resources they could want or need.

TRANSITORY NATURE
RESIDENTIAL GALLERY
03
Andy Goldsworthy’s artwork showcases ephemeral change over time through the repetition of natural elements and materials. Each sculpture expresses the fleeting characteristics of time and the impermanence of nature. The repetition of design elements, which fade into the gallery space will pay respect to Goldsworthy’s process by creating a “change over time” for the user as they progress through the space admiring his work. The use of interactive displays and installations allows the user to experience the ideation of Goldsworthy’s process similarly to how nature interacts with his art, the user will engage with the gallery setting.

OVERLAP
Raw materials are products of the natural world, the foundation behind Goldsworthy’s designs, and the driving force supporting the aesthetic design in both the gallery and apartment spaces. One pattern of biophilic design - connection to nature - states that humans are attracted to elements from and in nature, such as things that we can experience through our senses. The use of these materials, textures and colors created and derived from natural elements will enhance the design concept and create a lasting, comforting environment that one would innately enjoy being in.
“ Language alone cannot adequately convey the full impact of the delights of the natural world.” - Andy Goldsworthy

NEXT MEDICAL GROUP
MEDICAL OFFICE
04
Inspired by the vast, luscious evergreen forests surrounding Seattle, Washington - The Evergreen State - the NEXT Medical Group office is designed to provide a welcoming, multidisciplinary facility that explores the hierarchy and density of spaces that further promote healthy living and active lifestyles as well as emphasize preventative care. The density and resilience of the evergreen tree are translated into conceptual ideas that shape the medical facility and create an office workplace culture to promote and enhance the employee, patient and visitors’ wellbeing. The floor plan is structured around the density of the evergreen tree, where the most dense point translates to the “rooted” like spaces in the central axis of the building.

CIRCULATION
An analogous color scheme mixed with natural materials and elements is derived from the evergreen tree. While the most common species, the pine tree, is green in color all year round, there are many other colors found on evergreen trees. To contrast the year round green environment that the trees offer Seattle, my color palette creates a bright, inviting space that promotes stress free collaboration and one that reflects the unique brand and culture that the NEXT Medical Group strives to promote.
