Thermal Mass

Fig.1. Heat gain and loss

Daylight Access

The Dining room and kitchen is designed to have large windows that could allow the natural light to come in. It is benefit for both lighting up the living space and warm up the house duing winter. Louvers and Awnings equipped along the window correspondingly to avoid receiving too much sunlight during the summer season. The sunlight coming from the west in the afternoon is really warm, therefore an angle applied on the house could reduce the ammount of sunlight that the bedrooms receive in the afternoon. The dining room receive the most daylight dur to the North-west and North-east windows. The kitchen receive secondary most of daylight because of the large window area. Bedrooms are designed to have less daylight access.

‘Thermal mass is the ability of a material to absorb and store heat energy.’ It works through absorbing heat during the day and releases it by night. It is important due to a big different of outdor temperatures between day and night. Thus, the material used for wall and floor Summer might absorb the heat from the sunlight and release the heat at night.

Ventilation

The house is set in an angle where the diagonal line of the house are rotated and placed on the same line. Therefore the ventilation happens trhoughout the diagonal line of the house. Ventilation is very important in this residential house especially for the dinning room, more importantly the angle of the house. Due to an internal wall constructed in the middle of the house, the major ventilation happens from the North sliding door near the dining room to the front door. Secondary ventilation path starting from the North east sliding door beside the dinner table towards the front door. Due to the angle, another ventilation path will go through from the Northeast sliding door to the South-most bedroom, there are two windows helping with the ventilation. Weaker ventilation happens within the North-west bedroom, from the north window towards the west window. Moreover is the ventilation from the laundry room towards the Sout-most bedroom.

Fig.3.ventilation

Winter Shading Eave

The shading eave apply all around the roof. Normal length of eve may help to block some of the directional sunlight especially in summer. More importantly helps to avoid the rain that directly meet with the wall and the window.

Adjustable Louver

Fig.5.louver

Adjustable louvers can equip on most of the windows . By adjusting the angle of the leaf, various area of shade could provide into the room. The adjustment of angle is according to the season. It reference to a more perpendicular sunlight during the summer, and more horizontal sunlight during the winter.

Adjustable Awning

The Sliding door in the North will receive the most sunlight, therefore an adjustable awning can equip upon the sliding door can help to avoid the sunlight and create some shadow. The reason of using adjustable awning is to open it during summer and close it during winter. After closing the adjustable awning, more sunlight will shade into the room and helps to rise the temperature in the house. Fig.2.Adjustable awning

Hung and Double Hung

Hung will equip on the window near the kitchen. Less consideration of privacy in the kitchen therefore the window could be open most of the time helping for ventilation. It helps the feul fume smell to move out.

East pergola

The timber shelf pergola is located in the east side of the house. It will cast shadow in the beneath area. Moreover, some vine and fruits such as grapes can be planted along the pergola to fresh the air through photosynthesis and cooling the area.

Fan

Ceiling fan helps to improve the movement of air within a large zone. Ceiling fans that have variable speed control thus the speed of air movement can be adjust. In addidion, the blade for ceiling fan should be curved in order to produce more air movement.

Embodied Energy(EE)

Fig.3.Roofing

Trapezoidal metal roof is used on top for roofing. Metal roof has high EE and advantage in longevity and durability. It can reduce heating of the house since the surface will reflect the sunlight ray back. This feature is helpful for the Carltons due to the location of the house is in Melbourne where has high average temperature. A light colour painted on the surface of the roof will enhence the reflectiveness of heat The sloping roof enhence the collective of rainwater on the roof cause the rainwater will flow into the gutter along the sloping roof. Moreover, the solar panels will receive more sunlight in an angle and generate more energy.

Life cyc embodied energy include operation and disposal of building material.

Insulations are installed in the ceiling between the roffing plat and base plate to isolate the inner space from the environmen. The reflective foil sarking is a relective insulation provides limited R-vaue. It is an effective membrane and barrier to radiant heat. It is installed under the trapezoidal metal roof to reflect way unwanted heat in summer. For the sarking to fit in, it is necessary to have an air gap of 25mm beneath the foil in the roofing system according to the rule of thumb of installation of reflective foil.

Brick veneer is used for the external wall. Bricks are constructed outside the wall which has the minimal thermal mass benefit. The bricks will heat up in summer season and and heat will radiate out in the evening while the temperature gets low due to the thermal equilibrium. The construction method is stud frame with cladding, therefore a timber frame will erected first and the Hempcrete will installed outside the brick layer.

Hempcrete is used for living room and dining room a sustainable material made with Hemp, lime and water. It is carbon neutral. It is also energy efficient which matches the client’s will of having energy efficient house. Also it is durable. It is 300mm thick insulation with R-value of 2.8. It operate moderate thermal mass. Strawbale is used for bedrooms. It is the most effective thermal resistance insulation with low EE value. It allows moisture through into the house. It is healthier as insulation for a family like Caltons who have yound childrens. Strawbale is very thick and has high R-value of 4.8 which reduce the heat loss in the house. The densely-packed straw will ectend the life span of the house. Moreover, it is a material that can be find locally, thus less greenhouse emission is produced due to a no need of insulation transportation.

It reduced the efficiency of concreate slab absorbing the heat since it cannot directly receive the sunlight. But ‘in slab’ heating, the pipe is attatched with the concrete while construction, it is inside the reinforcement. Therefore it can store heat during the day while sunlight is shaded on the floor and the heat will evaporate out through convectiona nd radiation while the temperature is lower then it, due to thermal equilibrium

Concrete slab is used for the whole house. A layer of timber will layed on top of the concrete slab in living room and kitchen. The colour of the timber surface will be light, therefore the sunlight will reflect away from the floor and keep a cooler temperature in the living room and kitchen. Tile will layed on top of the concrete slab in the laundry room, bathroom and toilet to prevent from moisture the floor system. Moreover, it will be easy to clean. Carpet will layed on top of the concrete slab in the bedrooms. Carpet is soft, thus can increase the comfortable rate. The colour of the carpet will be dark, thus the carpet will absorb the most heat from sunlight during the day and can evaporate out the heat in the evening. It is a good material to keep the warm temperature in the bedroom.

Wet system also called a ‘charged’system, it is used to collect water from whole roof catchment. It used downpipes that plumbed underground to a tank and then rise up vertically into the tank from top. Wet system remains full of water up to the top of the vertical pipe. The horizontal drain pipe requires a water flow velocity of 0.7m/s to flush sediment, and the vertical pipe will need even higher velocity.

Garden Irrigation

Fig.2.Slope

Stormwater VS Rainwater Stormwater is the water that collected from the rain that falls onto the ground and roof, and everything it carries with it such as soil and litter from garden. Rainwater refers to the rain that only falls on the roof and collected by pipe. It is usually more cleaner. Rainwater is collected through downpipe to the rainwater tank. Things to consider: Soil type-Sandy soils are excellent for infiltration Soil depth-If granite, shale or limeston is placed underlain will impede infiltration, therefore a stormwater pipe is required to remove water off-site Groundwater-High groundwater table will reduce the effectiveness of infiltration Slope-Severe slopes increase water runoff -Avoid cut and fill of block for building foundations -retain deep-rooted trees, it is for binding the soil and filter nutrients in order to decreace runoff velocities. -Minimise the area of impervious surfaces : paved areas, roofs and concrete driveways. The water that can be recycled is the water that contains limited amount of organic matter and pathogens, such as water from laundry and showers. The water from kitchen sinkd, dishwasher and toilet can not be re-used. The recycled water cannot be held for more than 24 hours and discharge into sewage.

Sewage-rule of thumb -The lowest point in the site is the sewer pit in the corner. -Always use gradiant to move the waste Fall of discharge pipe -minimum gradient of pipe determined by pipe size(Fig.2) -Smaller the pipe diameter, the steeper the gradient -Adequate gradient should provide ‘self-cleaning action’

‘In slab’ heating is used instead of ‘on slab’ heating because ‘on slab’ heating have the pipe underneath the floor. It reduced the efficiency of concreate slab absorbing the heat since it cannot directly receive the sunlight. But ‘in slab’ heating, the pipe is attatched with the concrete while construction, it is inside the reinforcement. Therefore it can store heat during the day while sunlight is shaded on the floor and the heat will evaporate out through convectiona nd radiation while the temperature is lower then it, due to thermal equilibrium.

Zoning

The house is divided into 4 parts corresponding to varying degrees of the need of heating

Bedroom

Fig.1

Bedroom coloured in red is for children. They need constant

heating to ensure their room is warm enough to avoiid get cold. The hydronic panel is installed near the window to avoid creating pocket of warm and cold air.

Living room Living room coloured in green need high efficiency

heater for this large space due to fas evaporation of large area. Compare to other spaces, living area is larger. Hydonic slab heater constructed under the ground is the easiest way to utilize space. It is very efficient when integrated with Thermal Mass. It transfers heat through conduction and radiation instead of convection, therefore it is heating up the person instead of the space. It is suitable for constant occupancy, therefore it is very fit for the Carltons family. The reason for it is because the yound age of children and working condition of Mrs Carlton, they stay at home for a long time.

Good heating

Bed heating

Bathroom

Bathroom coloured in yellow will use bathroom heating lamp on the ceiling to warm up the space through radiation. The heat which radiated out warms up the space, moreover the warm lighting help with the rise of temperature as well. It can warm up the space really quick also because the space of bathroom is small. It is useful for the Carltons because they have yound children who has low immunity. The bathroom heating lamp could warm up the space really quick and prevent children from getting cold while showering. Hydronic towel rail constructed in the main bedroom bath room. It can constanly provide heat through radiation and conduction. Moreover, this heater takes minimal space. Hydronic towel rail can also used in children’s bathroom because it has rounded edge and will noe cause harm.

Fans Fan could immediatedly produce cool wind and cool down the space. In human mechanism, perspiration is the most obvious way and more sweat evaporation people would feel. Thus it is the more efficient way Distance between each fan should be at least three times the fan’s diameter Ceiling fans-whole room cooling, with light located in the living room and main bedroom. Ceiling fans without light located in the children bedrooms. Children might afriad of the light on the fan which is wobble in the air. The ceiling fan chosen should have variable speed control therefore the temperature is justable. In addidion, the blade for ceiling fan should be curved in order to produce more air movement. Portable fans- personal cooling, can be placed in the bedrooms. Due to its small size, it is only working for small area cooling. Therefore it is mainly utilized while stationary in one place and no need strong cooling system.

Planting

Tall tree grows like a wall in the North side of the yard in spring and summar. After the trees grow taller, it can block lots of sunlight and cooling the space. Plants activate photosynthesis and help to cooler the atmosphere.

Intergration with passive design

Fresh and cool air brings into the house by ventilation and cool down the temperature inside the house. Moreover, small windows are installed to enhance the ventilation.

Fig.3. Swimming pool

Water Pool and Pond

Large swimming water pool located in the yard for the Carltons to swim and play together as an activity. While it is not in use, water is a good medium to balance the temperature through convection As well as the water pond. There are small and large water pond in the yard not only used for fishing and courtyard landscape, but also cooling the temperature around it. Fig.4.Water Pond Fig.9. Adjustable Awning

Underground cooling and heating system, coorporate with water pool and pond in the yard as well. It is depends on latitude, ground temperatures range from 7 celcius degree to 21 celcius. The ground temperature is cooler than the air above it during the summer and warmer during the winter. This technique can be used with radiators. For underground, the trench is usually between 1-2 meter deep, boreholes are between 15-100 meter, it is depends on the energy needed. The loger the coil, the more energy it produces.

Adjustable Awning

Air Condition

The angle of blade can be adjust for the awning just like the louver. Thus, the amount of sunlight that shade in could be adjust by turning the angle of the blade. While it is closed, it is utilized for blocking the sunlight and create shade underneath.

Adjustable louver constructed in most of the window. It is not only to maintain privacy but also to block the sunlight and light from outside. To closed the louver could avoid sunlight from the outside, and also stop some of the conduction of heat which trying to get into the room through window. While the window is open for ventilation, the louver could block some of the strong wind. Moreover, block the vision from outside or neighbour and keep some privacy.

Air conditioner has really high reactivity. Less wind is produced thann fan and could cool the temperature into really low. But the filters need to be cleaded regularly to avoid smelly and to ensure the air comming out is not poisoninng the children. Air conditioner can be used for both heating and cooling.

Activity

Due to the Covid 19, people are restricted with their range of activity. Therefore it is important to have activity space inside the site. There is a vegetation planting area in the North corner provided for the Carltons to grow their own vegetation and fruit, or it is a parents-child campaign instead. Moreover, the raised garden bed with sleepers around the fence in the North could be utilized as a tool for relax activities while the family is at home. A sand pit in the garden offers a safe space for the children to play outside. They also could stay outside on the timber decking to enjoy the sunlight and natural environment while they cannot leave home. A adjustable awning constructed over head could block the strong light in summer, and allow the sunlight through in the winter. The timber shelf provides some shade as well, the bench underneath could also allows the Carltons to lay above. In this position, it is easy to see the childrens playing the garden or the sand pit, therefore they can taking care of them.

Preventivee Measure

Working at home

Since Carlton’s family has two children who are only two to three years old. They will need child tables and seats which is matched with their age and height. The table and chair need to avoid sharp angle to ensure children are safe while using them. Since the Covid-19 situation, the Carltons have to work at home. Due to a miss of working space, the main bed room has divided into two spaces, one is resting space for bed, one is working space for the Carltons to work at home. Due to Mrs. Carlton is a freelance graphic designer, she might need a larger working table to put all her working equipment such as graphing paper and laptop. The bedside table on each side is removed and, the bed is moving forward to the corner in order to create more space for the working table. In this circumstance, the bedroom is seperated into two spaces. Outdoor-There are multiple tables for the Carltons to work in the outside while taking look at the children playing in the yard. They can decide to sit in the North and enjoy the sunlight with their children, or sitting in the South where has more shadow and pool. Moreover, these tables are not only for working, but also for dinning and family party. They might want to choose sitting outside in the evening during the summer and have dinner together around the table.
