READINGS AND LECTURES

WEEK 1

Reading Fumihiko Maki & Masoto Ohtake - Investigations on Collective Form

-The force of the contemporary urban characteristics makes it impossible to ‘visualize urban form’ and ‘perceive a hierarchical order’. -Urban society should be seen as a ‘dynamic field of interrelated forces’. It is a combination of variables which can expand to infinite series but mutually independent. -Concern should be for ‘master program’ instead of ‘master plan’, which effect the ordering concept. -‘Master forms’ respond to the dictates of time -Cities are lack in physical and visual consonant, and restrict by monotonous patterns of static elements -We have prompted to investigate the nature of ‘collective form’ which group buildings and quasi-buildings in our city -Compositional Form Compositional apporach -Mega-Structure (Form) Structural Approach -Group-Form Sequential Approach Compositional Form The compositional approach is a commonly accepted and practiced concept in the past and at present.

Megastructure -Large frame -Manmade feature -‘the megastructure which is composed of several independent systems that can expand or contract with the least disturbance to others would be more preferable to the one of a rigid hierarchical system.’ Each system as a whole maintains its ‘identity and longevity’ without being affected by others while they have a dynamic contact with others. Promise for: 1) Environmental Engineering Japanese lineal village 2) Multi0functional structures 3)Infra-structure as public investment Group Form -System of generative elements in space -Factors: 1) Basic materials and construction methods 2) Use of dramatic geography and topography 3) Human scale 4) Sequential development of basic elements -Louis Kahn: ‘There is a need to distinguish ‘form’ from ‘design’’. -Form is the basic form of where the design will be depending on site condition, budget limitation or client’s idea, etc.

Collective Forms 1) Wall 2) Floor or Roof 3) Column 4) Unit 5) Link -It is perhaps a mistake to insulate types of links one form another by categorizing them. The activity we are discussing, is, after all, a singular one- that of making a comprehensible and humanly evocative urban environment. -The city as a pattern of events -Linkage is a glue of a city, we unite all layers of activity and resulting physical from in the city. 5 basic linking or operations: 1) To mediate Connect with intermediate elements or imply connection by spaces that demonstrate the cohesion of masses around them 2) To define To surround a site with a wall, or any physical barrier, and thus set it off its environs 3) To repeat To link by introducing one common factor in each of the dispersed parts of a design, or of an existing situation. That common factor may be formal, or material, or even functional-historical 4) To make functional path; and finally To arrange buildings, or parts of multi-use buildings in a sequence of useful activity. Further, to reinforce such a path by an means necessary to propel persons along a general, designated path Finally, to design a path, or reinforce a path in the natural landscape which will catalyze and give direction to new development along its course. 5) To select To establish unity in advance of the design process by choice of site.

WEEK 2

Reading Stan Allen - From Object to Field The field describes a space of propagation, of effects. It contains no matter or material points, rather functions, vectors and speeds. It describes local relations of difference within fields of celerity, transmission or of careering points, in a word, what Minkowski called the world.” From Object to Field -Overall shape and extent should be highly fluid -internal relationships of each part define the behaviour of the field Geometric vs. Algebraic combination -Parts form well ensembled to create a larger wholes -Individual elements are arranged in hierarchy order in order to preserve overall unity. Walking out of cubism -’walk out of the imperatives of cubist space and close the door behind him’ -aspirations of minimalist work towards ‘unitary forms, direct use of industrial materials, and simple combinations: a “pre-executive” clarity of intellectual and material terms’. Minimalism’s decisive tectonic shift activated the viewing space and reasserted the artwork’s condition as “specific object” Think 2D: Moires, Mats -All grids are fields, but not all fields are grids. -The potential of the field is to reorganize and redefine the relation between figure and ground. -A moire is a figural effect produced by the superposition of two regular fields. -shift -change in scale -repeat Flocks, Schools, Swarms, Crowds -the Boids were programmed to follow three simple rules of behaviour: 1) Maintain a minimum distance from other objects in the environment 2) Match velocities with other boids in the neighbourhood -Move toward the perceived center of mass of boids in its neighbourhood Distributed Institutions Strong historical connection between the precise rules of axiality, symmetry and formal hierarchy that master classical architecture and the traditional type-forms of Western institutions -‘There are no simple equation of organization and behaviour of politics and forms.’ Becuase the crowds always ‘present a different dynamic, motivated by more complex desire, and interacting in less predictable patterns’. -Michel Foucault:’ Liberating’ ‘is a practice’.

Lecture

Reflective surface Project1

Utilize the reflective surface constructed to reflect the sunlight into the lower building in the middle. Reflective surface Project2

Consider the receive of sunlight. Think the building as solar envalope white outline the largest space that a building can be designed in to receive enough sunlight per day.

Sunlight is a very important factor when designing the building, not only to match the legal policy of having how long of sunlight in hours, but only create lightness, warm up temperature, and increase the mood of happiness while people using the building.

Use reflective material to wrap around the building surface in order to reflect the sunlight to all the corners instead of blocking the sunlight.

Think 2D: Moires, Mats -All grids are fields, but not all fields are grids. -The potential of the field is to reorganize and redefine the relation between figure and ground. -A moire is a figural effect produced by the superposition of two regular fields. -shift -change in scale -repeat I like these parts, the combinition of curve ling and straight line create unstructured but organized space.

I used the technique to Morie, to generate some new shapes by overlapping the negative and positive shape with simialr pazzle shape.

I developed the strategy based on layering the form, but I think I could zoom in a little so that there is not a clear boundary

Assignment 1 Framework: Group / Field

I like the idea of the arrangement in this part. The circular space here is the public space int this site. But I could think more about the adjustment of length of each rectangular block so that the public space will be more wide and prepare fo large events

I really like this part , three white parts create like a leading path guide attention towards the top

I like this part very much. It creates a vision that the curvy white lines are strings going through a circular ring. I may try more in this next test out.

I really like this part, there are large building blocks in in a orgainzed space

Tutor feedback: The building blocks are too small. Think more about the scale of each element

READINGS AND LECTURES

WEEK 4-5

Reading Recovering Landscape-Essays in Contemporary Landscape Architecture James Corner, Editor

The Contemp0orary Metropolis Architecture today cannot concern itself only with that one set of structures that happen to stand upright and be hollow “buildings” in the conventional sense. It must concern itself with all man-made elements that form our environments: with roads and highways, with signs and posters, with outdoor spaces as created by structures and with cityscape and landscape. A Field of Social Instruments -The surface had to be equipped and staged in such a way as to both anticipate and accommodate any number of changing demands and programs -OMA responded with the superposition of four strategic laters for organizing different parts of the program: -the “east-west strips” of varying synthetic and natural surfaces, -the “confetti grid” of large and small service points and kiosks, -the various “circulation paths” -the “large objects, such as the linearand roud forests Mobility and Access: Surface as Collector and Distributor -The importance of mobility and access in the contemporary metropolis brings to infrastructure the character of collective space. An Inhabitable Surface -The more amorphous connective web of road has rarely been recognized as a collective space unto itself. -Italian architect Vittorio Gregotti: “We are trying to return a positive morphological value to the road... in an attempt to revive it as a component of the settlement event and by restoring the road to the architectural realm (while) forcing one’s discipline to consider the problems it implies as its own specific ones.” Waiting for Appropriation Flow and Surface Surface Strategies Group Form

WORKING PROGRESS

The main concept of my design is harmony and peaceful. I was inspired by the Chinese YinYang diagram. I has black and white colour. Black colour represents woods which includes grass, shrubs and tree. White colour represents water. The twisted shape means a mix of wood and water, which symbolized a mixture and interdependent of these two element. I wanted to bring this idea into my site design and create a space where the wood and water will peacefully interact with each other. Meanwhile when people enter the space, they will feel a a sense of embracement by the natural environment around them. I also wanted to enhance the corporation of human and natural, when people enter into the site and they can also feel immersion into the natural environment. I bring the inspiration of Yin Yang diagram into the central communal pavilion design and the water around them. The water shows a outline of the shape of Yin Yang diagram. At the same time, the lotus float above it emphasis a mixture and interaction of wood and water. The pavilion and sink down into the ground to moreover create a sense of immersive. I wanted the pavilion wall to be see through therefore people inside the communal pavilion will be able to vision the water and plants flowing around them. For the round pavilion located throughout the site, I was first inspired by the natural lotus leaf and how they grow together. After rain, there will be rain on top of the higher lotus leaf and flow towards the lower ones. The round pavilion as a shelter have different height located on the landform. It enhance the water flow across the site and break the limit of water only flow around the ring-shape in the middle.

WEEK 6

Development of Concept

Test with one circle. It failed due to it appears too organized. Moreover, too much empty space on the site that is haven’t designed.

Circular shape appears to be an organized shape. The intention is to breaking up the organized space by using the curvy line s. Thus new sahpes can be form based on the overlapping.

I tried to clear the curvy line by using the edge of the circle. I think it is too organized and betray the intention

Main curvy lines that dividing the space. Supplementary curvy lines that is hidden, which helps to divide the space

Show only the Pavilion(Figure)

Consider the necessarily and whether people could access

I thought about the YinYang diagram which is a misture of two elements. It inspired me on arranging the curvy line. Also, the appearance matched with my intention. I test more in the figure ground

I quite like the design idea of lotus, but the placementt looks too messy. Therefore I decide to delete them

Test curvy line without circle

Plateaus Landform

The circular pavilion is too organized that placed arouund the circular central pavilions. It did not match with the intention of breaking up the organized space. Thus, the location of placement of palivion should be considered

Triangular Landform

The Pavilion here is too small, the purpose of use of this pavilion and whether it is necessary should be considered

Patch Landform

The entry of the site is from the east, therefore the necessary of the pavilion in the west should be considered.

Steppted Contour Landform

These spaces are really large and empty, try to consider the use of these area. It cannot be only grass, the plants and road that set in these areas should be considered. Moreover, the experience of visitor entering these space need to be designed.

Vignette perspectives of seasonal changes in your proposal Reference: Weather in Melbourne. https:// www.australia. com/en/factsand-planning/ weather-in-australia/melbourne-weather. html

Spring (September – November) During spring average temperatures range from 9.6 - 19.6°C (49.3 - 67.3°F). The season is known as the most variable of the year, when weather can quickly change from calm and sunny to cold and windy. Pack your umbrella – October is the wettest month with roughly 10 days of rainfall.

Summer (December – February) Melbourne warms up in summer with mean temperatures between 14 - 25.3°C (57.2 - 77.5°F). These months are dry, with occasional hot spells that can last more than three days. Melbourne’s top temperatures are usually in January and February, when temperatures can occasionally soar past 30°C (86°F).

Autumn (March – May) Autumn sees cooler weather with average temperatures ranging from 10.9 – 20.3°C (51.6 - 68.5°F). Morning fog usually clears to welcome fine, sunny days, however toward the end of the season there can be extended periods of light winds.

Winter (June – August) In winter, average temperatures range from 6.5 - 14.2°C (43.7 - 57.6°F), and snow falls in the north-east of Victoria, known as High Country. The weather is frequently cold and cloudy, and nights can be accompanied by frosts. Heavy rain is rare at this time of year.

WEEK 10

Model Developement & First Floor Site Plan

Tutor Suggestion: The pavilion is too narrow to fit all the facilities in, think about thick the pavilion, in a way of merge shape with the inner circle.

WEEK 11

Experiential Image Angle Selection

Experiential Images You will complete two perspective images which will allow people to get a sense of the kinds of atmospheres and experiences you intend to cultivate in your proposals. These perspective images should be views of: A.- an exterior garden(s) viewed from the interior of one of your pavilions. This may be seen through a large window, an open door or on a terrace. The mainaspect we would like to see captured is the way in which the relationships between interior and exterior spaces may be experienced. B.- a view from a garden towards a pavilion(s). We should get a sense of how the pavilions frame or form a continuity (or clear separation) with the garden spaces. Besides the material and atmospheric quality of these scenes, some sense of the activitties enabled by your proposal should also be evident both images.

Site & Site Plan Development

Tutor Suggestion: Whether the exhibition board can be a conticuous of the curvy cutting line?

Tai Chi Harmony Land

TaiChi Diagram reoresents the idea of harmony merge between elements. The black and white curvy shape with the opposite colour in the middle represents one contains anothoer. In this idea, all the word that seems opposite with each other in another way contains each other. We can loose neither sun or moon; Grass cannot survive without water, vice versa; Women and men brings new and new generations. I took the idea of this into to the design, taking the Taichi shape as the main form involving with curvy line to divide the spaces.
