PROJECT BACKGROUND
Exploring community-led development in Sheffield The project has been developed in collaboration with Sheffield-based social enterprise Studio Polpo and with the nascent Sheffield Community Land Trust. The aim of the project is to explore the potential of community-led approaches to the regeneration of the city’s central areas. What can we do when the market does not ‘provide a solution’? What would be a desirable, ethical and just way of re-appropriating sways of city that are left as land banks or waiting for ‘investors’? And how could be prototype other ways of making the city that embody more ethical values?

CONTEXT & ANALYSIS
Burngreave lies directly north of Sheffield City Centre. It is delineated to the east by the large industrial area of the Lower Don Valley which stretches almost uninterrupted from ponds roundabout to Meadowhall shopping centre. To the west, the area abuts the undeveloped slopes of Parkwood Springs. The old industrial areas of Neepsend, Kelham Island and the Wicker and Nursery area which are currently the subject of separate regeneration initiatives are sandwiched between Burngreave and the city centre. The study area is diverse inner city suburb of Sheffield, containing a broad mix of housing and s diverse multi-足cultural population, including approximately one third from ethnic minority communities, some of whom are refugees or asylum seekers. The area suffers some of the wrost social disadvantage in Sheffield, with Burngreave Ward being in the wrost 1% of wards in England as defined by Government multipul deprovation indices.
SUBJECTIVE MAPPING The street have good commercial atmosphere. Many people come cross this area.
DESIGN PRINCIPLES URBAN FABRIC
The public space did not have activities for local community. It lacks of vitality. The house facade looks like disused and old. It seems to be abandoned for a long time.
Many old industrial storages have already been abandoned.
Many private cars park in the street near the factories.
EMPTY SPACE
LARGE VOLUME BUILDINGS
With the decline in Industry, place was left with large area of empty space.
And some large volume buildings stand tall and uprignt in this area. most of them are old industry and shopping centre.
There are many rubbished along the street in industrial area.
The bridge feel dark. Few people come across here.
HUMAN ACTIVITIES An extra Tesco attract people to shop here, so we can see many people walk or drive to this big shopping centre, Moreover the main street nearby also have some different kind of shops.
This green space might be the only public space with good condition and few people spend their time to relax here on weekdays.
Along the main street several bused link Burngreave to city centre, most people who live here choose to travel to another place from several bus stations.
Around Burngreave, some workshop and factory are still on work, but these areas kept really calm and full of industry refuse. People are busy with work and we can hardly see few people pass by.
LITTLE BLOCKS
TERRACE HOUSES (COMMERCIAL)
In the residential district, the fabric of buildings keep small block but they form a regularly urban fabric.
Beside the main street to city centre, the buildings are mainly in terrance house.

The idea is to form a community land trust led by women. They can help to organize the daily activities and also offer opportunity to them to enjoy the outside world. Moreover, the children who take care by women are also considered important actors to the project.

CRITICAL REFLECTION
This urban design project set up time structured strategies to establish a community land trust, which builds houses and public spaces in the borders of Burngreave, Wicker and Darnall, on both sides of the railway. It considers the community's women the starting point of the organization, reinterpreting their roles in the public spaces. Our main proposal topical is 5 steps towards women-led urban development. We divided our proposal to 5 steps that is really successful. Because viewers can understand easily, and when it is on the billboard, that is clear to help people catch up the main points of the proposals. The position in our project is really interesting and valuable to research. We found this area containing a broad mix of housing and 5 diverse multi-cultural populations, including approximately one third from ethnic minority communities, some of whom are refugees or asylum seekers. We choose women as our main stakeholder; that is a little bit hard to talk, especially with men. And we could not reach Muslim women, if it arose again, I will use Internet to connect them, or distribute card asking for later interaction. When talk about the methods we used in our design proposal, I think we use as much as possible that is helpful for our project, such as reflecting, situating, surveying, mapping, communicating and gathering. To more specific, it is important to do some early site research when we use the method setting up a base. In the final studio day, our group chose 3 sites to present our design proposals. At the bus stop Wicker, it works well. And the most successful site is in the Tesco, which attracted a lot of people. But at the second site the bus stop in Burngreave didn’t worked well. Actually, few number of people stop to see our proposals. I think this space was too tight, and there was a clear conflict of use, annoying the people. If we have another opportunity to hold a present like this, I must have go every site at the same time in a day, observe the visitors flow rate, the site’s extra space and other situations to judge if it is a good site to present. Our methods are abundant enough to help that whole project does well. Taking pamphleteering as an example, we design group own pamphlet hand out to people, that is a real good way to attract people. Interviewing is a good method to get the intuitive perception from people. We interviewed Margaret, she is a member from Burngreave TARA. We learned the history of Burngreave TARA, the main activities this organization hold, and invite she take part in our final studio day. Next time I wander to add another method, use social media to collect more feedback or feeling from public. For the precedents we studied in this project, to be honest, I have to say we searched a large number of precedents at the beginning of the project, that is really helpful to understand what is the project, something about architecture housing, what is community land trust, and how it works. I think in this part we did good enough, maybe next time, I can learn more precedents about how to communicate with Muslim women.
