Message from the President It really is a pleasure to work in a school this time of the year and witness the out of high school, college, and graduate school. It is also a time of year when a

All of this being said, and all of the optimism being established, it is amazing to me to see the lack of concrete plans developed by many people as they look forward to new experiences, work opportunities, and even marital commitments. And that is why the scriptural narrative surrounding the ascension, which occurs after Easter and which anticipates Pentecost, is such a helpful and meaningful story. The Easter mystery of the passion, death, resurrection and ascension, and the sending of the Holy Spirit (L-R) Seniors Rossi Walter, Daniel Merrill and Michael Buss receive the Men for Others Award from Rev. Philip Postell, S.J. forms one unbroken reality, which is to be understood by faith. If Good Friday says Jesus truly died, then Easter Sunday says that he is alive. And the ascension adds that the risen living Jesus is together with his Father and Lord. How do we describe the role of this faith event in our lives? We believe that we are redeemed and we enter the future with uncertainty but also with belief. The theological reality behind the ascension and Pentecost gives us the foundation for

and an assurance that the Spirit will take care of us even if we cannot spell out with concrete certitude our future over the next two months and two years. None of us can necessarily plan the proximate future. But for Christians who believe in the reality of Jesus Christ, there is one certainty; that is that even though Jesus died on Good Friday, he was alive on Easter Sunday and now lives with our Father in glory. That is our certainty. That is our assurance. That is our faith.

To the Jesuit Community: As we announced last June, Reverend Philip Postell, S.J. will be reassigned at the end of the 20102011 school year. The Board of Trustees is responsible for hiring his successor, and I wanted to update you on the search process and selection criteria for the next president of Jesuit Dallas. To ensure the next president continues the outstanding legacy of Jesuit Dallas, we have appointed a Search Committee and charged them with conducting a national search for our next president. The Provincial of the New Orleans Province of the Society of Jesus has encouraged the board to approach the search with an open mind and consider all candidates, Jesuit or lay, with appropriate ! " # $ % # Consulting. Carlos Pena and the Search Committee spent several months meeting with parents, alumni, and students; as well as school administration, faculty and staff; and members of the Jesuit ' ' ( ) * ( + The President will champion academic rigor in concert with spiritual direction and personal nurturing; a profound sense of community with individual accountability; transparency and consensus with consistent application of policy and decisiveness; maintaining affordability identity in the context of a student body consisting of men for others. Carlos and the committee are working with sources for candidates and conducting preliminary discussions with candidates. They intend to begin formal interviews over the next 60 days. It is our " /<=< $ We expect the next president will assume his/her duties in June, 2011. Your participation is especially valuable in this process. Jesuit Foundation Welcomes Executive Director Liza O’Connor, J.D. joins the Jesuit Foundation as executive director. She comes to Jesuit from Ireland, where she most recently provided strategic planning and fundraising direction to clients including Glenstal Abbey School and Mary Immaculate College. In her prior role as CEO of The University of Limerick Foundation, she was responsible for fundraising and alumni relations. Before her move to Ireland, Liza was the senior regional director for The American Ireland Fund (AIF) for New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. In that capacity for the AIF, Liza established a program to assist donors with planned-giving needs and served on the leadership team for the $100,000,000 Hope & History Campaign. Liza holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Fordham University and a Juris Doctorate from Georgetown Law School. Announcing Liza’s arrival, Chairman of the Jesuit Foundation John Hubach explains, “Liza’s education and experience uniquely position her to assist in taking our advancement efforts to even higher levels.� Liza will join the Jesuit Dallas advancement team with both administrative and fundraising responsibilities. In addition to focusing on the planned-giving program, Liza will support the J campaign currently underway. Welcoming his colleague, Chuck Vinson, vice president of institutional advancement, commented, “The Foundation’s selection committee demonstrated its commitment to excellence by the breadth of its search to attract and recruit a professional with this level of talent.� The Catholic Foundation recognized Reverend ! 4? ? contributions to the community at an award ceremony February 5. Alumni Service Corps The Alumni Service Corps offers Jesuit Dallas alumni who are recent college graduates an opportunity to spend a year in service to the school. Living in community, the members of the corps teach classes, work with the Campus Ministry and Community Service programs, help with extracurricular or athletic activities and participate in spiritual formation. After an extremely successful inaugural year, Jack Fitzsimmons, Director of the Alumni Service Corps program, is pleased to introduce the 2010-2011 Alumni Service Corps members. Juan Fuentes ’06 graduated from Loyola University Chicago this year and will teach Freshman Biology. Matt McEvoy ’05 graduated from Stanford University in ’09. He will also teach Freshman Biology. Tim Murphy ’06 graduated from Oklahoma State University this year and will teach Sophomore World History. Brooks Oliver ’06 graduated from SMU this year and will teach Argumentation and Debate.

Celebrating Jesuit Athletics An Evening Celebrating Jesuit Athletics presented by

The 2010 Jesuit Sports Hall of Fame Banquet presented by Prime Lending featured the induction into the Sports Hall of Fame of Joe LaRocca ’50 – Football, Bill Taylor ’60 – Football, Hank Dudek ’87 – Basketball, Mike Cleary ’95 – Basketball, and Chris Martinez ’78 – Gold Ranger Award. In addition, Laura and Dan O’Neal received the Heart Award, the Jesuit ASC members received the John F. Campbell Fan of the Year Award, Casey Wicker received the Athlete of the Year Award and Charlie DeLong was honored as the Coach of the Year. The event raised more than $10,000 to support Jesuit athletics.

Jesuit Debate Sweeps State Tournament The Jesuit debate team won the Texas Forensic Association State Debate Tournament in historic fashion. The teams of senior Joel Diamond and junior Ryan Gorman and senior Carson Young and junior Sullivan McCormick were crowned co-champions second place in CrossExamination Debate. It was only the second time in the 37-year history of the TFA State Debate Tournament that a school has had both ! today summer 2010

1940s Richard McGowan ’46, ordained a priest in 1960, celebrated his Golden Sacerdotal Jubilee on June 15, 2010. A Jesuit for 64 years, he joined the Society of Jesus just two months after graduating from Jesuit High School. Fr. McGowan was a member of the Jesuit faculty for eight years and is currently an associate pastor at Immaculate Conception Church in Albuquerque, NM. Jim McCaffrey ’48 continues his work as Eucharistic Minister to the sick. He is also the Director of Marian Movement of Priests and Associates in San Antonio, TX for Our Lady of Guadalupe.

2000s Ken Larsen ’01 returned to the National Training Center in Hohenfels, Germany where he is based following the completion of his second tour in Afghanistan. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and is a Cavalry

Scout in the U.S. Army. During his deployment Ken served at a remote Forward Operating Base (FOB) near the Afghanistan/Pakistan border and was attached to a platoon of infantry soldiers from the 4th Infantry Division. His whole family is incredibly proud of him and they look forward to his return. Omar Nava ’01, a U.S. Air Force Academy graduate with a B.S. degree in physics, and a 2006 Naval Post Graduate School graduate with a B.S. degree in meteorology, is currently assigned at the Air Force Institute of Technology in Ohio, pursuing a master’s degree in applied physics with a concentration in space physics. Philip Hanley, of Waukegan, IL, passed away Sept. 30, 2009 at Manor Care Nursing Home. He was 76 years old. Born in New Orleans, he lived in the Illinois area for many years. Prior to his retirement, Philip taught high school English for over 25 years, his early teaching years as a member of the Society of Jesus.

Frank Ribelin passed away Apr. 26, 2010 following a courageous 2-year struggle with cancer. Born in Dallas, he attended Jesuit High School and graduated from SMU with a degree in business administration. He served in the U.S. Air Force, entered the family business,

+ = € raw materials distributor. Frank guided the company to become an industry leader in the Southwest. The business was sold in 1987, which gave Frank the opportunity to expand his support of the arts. He served on numerous |# + * + @ Preparatory School of Dallas Foundation, and was instrumental in starting the Jesuit Dallas Museum.

Robert D. Coursey ’59 Robert Coursey, Ph.D., died on Dec. 14, 2009, at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, VA. A professor of psychology at the University of Maryland, College Park, for over 30 years, he received numerous awards for teaching and research in the area of serious mental illness. He was a tireless advocate, who fought for increased respect and more humane treatment for the mentally ill.

Robert Bruce Hart ’50 Bruce Hart died at the age of 77 after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Born in Macon, MO, to Jack and Norma Hart, his family settled in Dallas where he attended Jesuit High School. An athlete, he enjoyed playing basketball, football and baseball. After high school he was drafted into the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant. ~ + @+ > throughout his career and made Houston his permanent home in 1977. After retirement, he went to work for ExpoTech USA and stayed with them until his diagnosis.

John E. Finn Jr. ’55 After a valiant battle with cancer, John Finn of Los Angeles passed away Dec.12, 2009 at his home with family members at his side. Born in Dallas, he was a graduate of Jesuit High School and a 1959 graduate of the University of Notre Dame. A boxing champion in college, he would later meet the former heavyweight champion of the world, Jack Dempsey, who kindly advised John to get married and have a family, rather than pursue professional boxing. John was a wonderful father, a former history teacher at Jesuit Dallas and a successful businessman in California.

Frank Satarino, born at St. Paul Hospital in Dallas to parents Pete and Grace Satarino, died peacefully Jan. 26, 2010 at the same hospital. A graduate of Jesuit High School, he served in the U.S. Army and worked at the Dallas Times Herald newspaper for over 25 years. He enjoyed his family, reading and Italian food.

Eugene F. Rushing ’60 Eugene Rushing, 67 years old, passed away on Nov. 3, 2009. Born in Crandall, TX, he moved to Austin in 1964 and began his career at The University of Texas Applied Research Labs. He retired in 1997 after more than 32 years of service. He was an avid bowler and played bass guitar for The Statesman. He coached Little League baseball and enjoyed University of Texas and Dallas Cowboy sporting events.

Paul Chitwood passed away Apr. 21, 2010. Born Jan. 27, 1944, he graduated from Jesuit High School and served in the U.S. Army as a pilot, achieving the rank of captain. An avid Scrabble player, he was ranked in 2009 by the National Scrabble Association.

Jack Daniel passed away Jan. 2, 2010, after a long battle with cancer. Jack was a poverty law and civil rights attorney with Central California Legal Services. Known for his work with several legal aid organizations, he defended the poor, the mentally ill, children and farmworkers. He died at his home in Laton, CA with family at his side.

Dennis Landin, Sr. passed away Apr. 1, 2010. A longtime employee at Mercado Juarez restaurant in Dallas, he enjoyed his time at Jesuit and had a particular fondness for Fr. Pat Koch, S.J., the principal at Jesuit when Dennis was a student at the school. It was because of this relationship that Dennis was so dedicated to having his sons’ attend his alma mater.

H. Norman Bockemehl, Sr. ’64 Norman Bockemehl passed away Apr. 15, 2010. Born and raised in Dallas, he attended St. Augustine School and graduated from Jesuit High School. Following in his father’s footsteps, Norm worked for Halliburton for over 30 years. After retirement, he opened “Norm’s Photography,” his own photography studio, and was currently employed by DNS Tool as a machinist and shop foreman.

Robert J. Jennings ’65 Bob Jennings passed away Dec. 4, 2009 following a long battle with cancer and heart disease. He was born in Dallas, the son of William and Elizabeth Jennings. He attended St. Pius X Catholic School, Jesuit High School and was a graduate of St. Louis University. Bob began his teaching career at St. Rita Catholic School in Dallas and later pursued a career in the insurance industry. After retirement, he returned to teaching.

Joseph F. Coerver ’68 Joe Frank Coerver was born in Dallas on Nov. 8, 1949 to Mildred and Marion Coerver. He graduated from Jesuit College Preparatory School, Northwestern University and University of Texas Law School. He loved sharing in his children’s activities, participating in his church as a lay reader, and his love for music lasted throughout his life.

Michael D. Roberts ’93 Michael Roberts was born July 23, 1974 in St. Louis, MO, to Jack and Barbara Roberts. A beloved son and brother, he passed away Dec. 24, 2009. A graduate of Jesuit Dallas, he received his BS from Texas Tech University # He was an avid music lover and enjoyed being physically active. Mike liked telling stories, never met a stranger and was a friend to many.

John Mark Knight ’73 Mark Knight, of Goshen, NY, died Mar. 11, 2010 at his home. He was 55 years old. Mark was born in Brooklyn, NY, the son of the late John F. and Marilyn (Rockefeller) Knight. He served honorably in the Marine Corps and was a member of the New York City Police Department for over 20 years, retiring as a sergeant.

Federico Garcia ’03 Federico Garcia passed away Nov. 3, 2009 in Denton, TX. While at Jesuit, he was a 4-year member of the soccer team and Latinos Unidos. He is survived by parents, Federico and Sylvia Garcia.
