WELCOME to Jesuit Today. Bidding farewell to the Class of 2011, we witness timeless commencement traditions even as we anticipate the changes ahead for these young men and for the school on which they have left their mark. We send them off with our prayers and hopes as we prepare to welcome the Class of 2015. The end of the 2011 academic year also brings the end of Rev. Philip Postell, S.J.’s nineteen years at Jesuit Dallas.

As I get ready to move on to a new assignment, I can’t help but reflect on the growth of Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas over the last twenty, or for that matter the last fifty years. One of the earliest recollections in my very first year was the opportunity to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the school. The school began in 1942-1943 and celebrated the 50th anniversary in 1993. It was a stellar celebration remembering milestones including the school’s move from the original Turtle Creek site.

In the years since, we have not rested on our laurels. Our enrollment has increased, and rising enrollment has been accompanied by more than doubling of the square footage of classroom space. The number of students involved in extracurricular activities has almost tripled to the point that virtually all students participate in at least one activity and more than 700 students compete on one of the eighteen varsity Rev. Philip Postell, S.J. celebrates graduation with the Class of 2011 athletic teams we offer. Nor can (L-R) Ross Thompson, Thomas Ackels and Kevin Fitzsimmons. we ignore the fact that the debate team has won the state championship several times in these past twenty years.

And, of course, we have reached a rather significant frontier by blowing past the stone wall of resistance to private school participation in the UIL. Clearly, there is much to trumpet about the growth, increase, and expansion of Jesuit Dallas.

However, when I hear about interest from prestigious colleges, significant athletic achievements and growing enrollment, I remind myself that these are not the true measure of a Christian school. Rather, we must always ask ourselves important questions. What are the attitudes of our students? To what extent are they better Christians? To what extent are they more sensitive? Can they reach out to the underdog? Do they work to their potential? Are they respectful of parents, adults, and of women? What about the practice of racism?

MISSION STATEMENT Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas offers young men an excellent, Catholic education in the classical Jesuit tradition with the purpose of forming a community of men of high moral principles and service to others.

With this year’s class as with all that came before, I hope we will see our graduates assume positions of responsibility in the community and in the Church. I would hope that our young men will want to make a difference and that this difference will be more than material success but moral influence. To that extent, we will truly be an educational institution that furthers the performance of human beings and supports the call of Christ.

Message from the President-Elect “Change” is the word that I would use to describe this year at Jesuit. Who could pass by on Inwood Rd. and not notice the giant crane sitting in our parking lot? Its creation, the new Athletic Center, is starting to take on a very recognizable shape. The remodeling project we began at the end of the school year has now taken on a life of its own as the original classrooms, built in 1962, get a much-needed upgrade and refit. Both of these construction projects are part of our physical change. Perhaps not always so evident, but not less of a change, are the ones we have witnessed in our students this year. I began the 2010-2011 school year calling our students to recognize that they represent a critical mass for good.

Throughout the year, I have witnessed the fruits of this critical mass.

I received a note back in February explaining how two Jesuit men, who didn’t give their names, helped an 89-year-old man who broke his ribs when he fell on the ice. His daughter wrote to me saying that if it had not been for these remarkable Jesuit guys stopping to help, the outcome for her father would have been disastrous. The more than 400 special athletes who were hosted by the Class of 2011 for Jesuit’s Special Games created something in the lives of the seniors as well as the athletes. It was easy to see this change just by looking on the participants’ faces.

Other examples of being forces for good are the Clean Water Project, which the school took on to provide a safe, clean, drinking water well for a Nicaraguan community, as well as the border immersion mission trip to our Jesuit parish on the Mexican-American border. The list of our guys practicing being a force for good this year could go on and on.

With our culture often saturated with a bleak forecast regarding teenage boys and the constant negative messages they receive from the popular media, our future as a nation, a culture and a people may appear dim. We have only to look at the work of the young men who attend and graduate from Jesuit College Preparatory School to know with certainty that during their time with us at Jesuit, they are changed. They are changed into a critical mass for good out in our world, that the effects are real, they are powerful and that it is making a positive difference in our world every day.

We pray that God will continue to bless our school and our boys and persist in helping us be the instruments of His work on earth and we ask a special blessing for Father Philip Postell as he continues to be a powerful instrument for God’s work at Brophy Preparatory in Phoenix.

Garrison Named Principal After a thorough nationwide search, Tom Garrison ’92 was chosen to become the principal of Jesuit Dallas. Garrison has served as assistant principal for student academics since 2003. He began his career at Jesuit Dallas in 1997 as an English teacher, after earning a BA in psychology and an MAT in secondary education from Austin College. Endorsing the selection, Mike Earsing, who becomes president July 1, commented, “Tom Garrison brings a wide range of outstanding attributes and skills to the job of principal, most notably his understanding of Jesuit foundational concepts and his innovation and creativity in the areas of curriculum and academic student services.”

We Are Jesuit No corner of campus lacks improvements made possible by the community’s generous support of the We Are Jesuit campaign. From the modernized library to the new athletic stadium, from additional classrooms and those currently being renovated to the athletic tower under construction, the transformation of the campus is dramatic. Jesuit Golfer Shines After securing his third consecutive state championship title, Jordan Spieth ’11 returned to play in the HP Byron Nelson Championship for a second time. Cheered on by hundreds of supporters from Jesuit, impressive play early in the tournament had him within four strokes of the lead as he entered the final round. Spieth will play on the University of Texas team in the fall.

Museum 25th Anniversary Join the celebration during 2011-2012, when the Jesuit Dallas Museum celebrates its 25th Anniversary. From humble beginnings in 1986, with art on loan from alumni, this treasure of the Jesuit community has come to include 500 pieces including such important works as the threedimensional aluminum and acrylic masterpiece “Color & Rhythm” by Israeli artist Yaacov Agam; commissioned in 2004, the piece is a gift from Linda and Sam Kasmir. Mark your calendar for November 5, when the ArtQuest gala kicks off a year of anniversary celebrations.

Celebration Auction Lillian Curran, Pat Sayers and their team of auction volunteers didn’t just create a fun and memorable night with Noir et Blanc Masquerade, the 2011 Celebration Auction. The evening raised more than $650,000 for the Jesuit Endowment. To-date, the auction has contributed more than $12.5 million to fund need-based tuition aid. Challenge Drive After a record-setting Challenge Drive in 2010 when he was drive co-chair, Kevin Bartholomew takes the lead in 2011 with help from co-chair Joe Coleman. The Challenge Drive closes the gap between tuition and the actual cost of educating each student. Through the community’s generous support of the drive and participation by more than 90% of parents, Jesuit maintains a healthy operating budget while holding tuition increases to a minimum. This year, Challenge Drive Sunday will be October 16.

Debaters Dominate The Jesuit Debate Team of Ryan Gorman ’11 and Sullivan McCormick ’11 defended their Texas Forensic Association State Debate Championship with a perfect 10-0 for an historic back-to-back title.

The Texas State Debate Tournament is the largest and most competitive in the country with 110 teams from more than 60 schools competing in the three-day event. The pair extended their success at the National Tournament of Champions, where they were only the second team in Jesuit history to advance to the elimination rounds, ultimately finishing 17th out of the top 72 debate teams in the country.

Grandparents Day Jesuit welcomed more than 400 grandparents to campus February 21 for a special morning and brunch. Thanks to honorary grandparents Ann and Kevin Clancy and the student ambassadors, museum docents and faculty who helped make it a wonderful event.

Alumni Service Corps

New Head Football Coach After 14 seasons as the Rangers head football coach, Bob Wunderlick ’84 was ready for a change. While Wunderlick will remain in the classroom and will continue to help on the field, Brandon Hickman takes charge of the team. After a thorough review of more than 100 applicants, Hickman, who was the team’s offensive line coach and offensive coordinator, was selected as the school’s new head football coach. Hickman played on the offensive line at TCU during the 1993 and 1994 seasons, and helped bring the team a Southwest Conference Championship. His coaching career began at TCU and includes stops at North Garland High School and JJ Pearce High School. Athletic Director Steve Koch explained, “Having worked with Brandon for several years, I am convinced that he uniquely combines a dedication and knowledge of football with an understanding of the mission of the school.”

Alumni Retreat Alumni gathered at Montserrat Jesuit Retreat House for the second annual Alumni Retreat in February. Author of best-selling books about Jesuit spirituality, Chris Lowney brought his experience as both a former Jesuit seminarian and a former managing partner at JP Morgan and Company to his leadership of the retreat.

Three Jesuit Dallas alumni will join the faculty for the 20112012 academic year as the third class of the Alumni Service Corps (ASC). Thanks to the outstanding contributions of the members of the first two classes and the support of the community, the ASC program enjoys great success. The following graduates of Jesuit will return to the school as members of ASC III: Ian Berry ’07 (The University of Texas 2011); Neil DuRoss ’07 (Saint Louis University 2011); and David Pace ’07 (University of Arkansas 2011.) All three men will teach, tutor, participate in retreats and liturgies, help with campus ministry and community service, and assist with extracurricular activities.

Jesuit Family Day Hundreds of family and friends gathered on a beautiful spring day for the first-ever Jesuit Family Day, including a cookout, an Easter egg hunt and fun for all ages. today summer 2011

Drinkable Water When the student body learned about the lack of clean water for millions of people around the world, they recognized access to this basic human need as a social justice issue. They responded by raising enough money to build and maintain a well in Nicaragua that will provide clean drinking water for at least 30 years for 8,000 people.

Great Year for JWA The JWA concluded an outstanding year in which the women of Jesuit had fun while helping the school financially and with volunteer support. Proceeds from JWA activities including the Christmas Bazaar and poinsettia sales enabled a donation to the We Are Jesuit campaign of nearly $25,000 in addition to the annual Men for Others scholarships awarded. The organization provided volunteer support to a variety of efforts including The Magis golf tournament and community outreach such as Adopt-a-Family. The year culminated with a luncheon at which Anne O’Brien was recognized as the Woman of the Year for more than a decade of contributions to Jesuit.

President’s Reception Father Postell welcomed guests to the President’s Reception in June. The event recognizes the school’s most generous annual donors.

Garden Party Holly and Joe Hughes ’71 opened their home to friends of Jesuit whose level of support gained them membership in the Claver Society. A beautiful spring day was the perfect setting for a morning Mass and brunch.

Jesuit Theater The spring theater production of Moliere’s French classic “Scapino!” featured many moments of physical comedy. Make plans to attend a very different performance in mid-November when Jesuit Theater presents Tennessee Williams’ “A Streetcar Named Desire.”

When an earthquake and tsunami struck Japan, the Jesuit community responded as it always does and reached out to those in need.

Donations from alumni, parents, students and friends totaled nearly $33,000.

Robotics In its third year of FIRST Robotics competition, the Jesuit Robotics Team topped 51 teams to win the Dallas Regional competition and advance to the Championships. Facing competitors from around the world, the Jesuit Robotics Team finished 16th in their division out of 88 teams. Jesuit Robotics enjoys the generous support of JCPenney, Atmos Energy, PTC, and Burns Controls. Changes to Foundation Board The Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas Foundation, which was formed to support the mission of the school, welcomes three new members to its board of directors, each of whom will serve a three-year term. Both Joseph Coleman and Elisabeth Struckell are parents of current students, while Douglas Lattner ’69 is an alumnus. Coleman brings legal expertise while Struckell and Lattner bring strong business backgrounds. Thanks to outgoing board members Maureen Kuntz, Mark Godvin and William Hanley ’75 for their careful stewardship of the Foundation during their terms.

Jesuit’s Tireless Champion

B

eginning his new assignment at Brophy College Preparatory in Arizona, Rev. Philip S. Postell, S.J. leaves behind

a school much improved by his 19-year tenure. His vision and leadership have shaped Jesuit Dallas since his arrival and his impact will continue well into the future.

Every aspect of the school—including enrollment, academics, faith formation, student enrichment, commitment to diversity and community service, athletic offerings, financial strength, volunteer support, and physical facilities—bears his imprint.

The Jesuit Today that introduced Postell to the community back in 1992 described him as having “…a quick wit and a dry sense of humor, a ready smile and a sharp mind….”

His initial observations about the school in the same article proved the strength of his insight when he explained, “The potential for growth…is a real asset [but my] only disappointment is the inability of Jesuit to participate in UIL sports and activities.”

He described his greatest concern for the future as “the ongoing challenge of helping our young teenage students to fully integrate the academic, spiritual and physical components of their developing personalities.” In the years since, he has leveraged his quick wit, sharp mind and unbending determination to address those very issues.

enabled improvements to the school that include additional faculty and expanded curricular, extracurricular and athletic offerings. His commitment to developing the whole man is evident in the zeal Postell brings to encouraging extracurricular activities. With his support, the number of sports has grown from ten to eighteen, allowing two-thirds of students to participate on a school team. He led the fight to gain Jesuit students the opportunities presented by membership in the UIL. He has supported the development of clubs and other activities with equal vigor so the school fields exceptional debate, drama, music and extracurricular academic programs.

Joseph Martinez ’07 Because of the Higher Achievement Program (HAP), Joseph Martinez began his academic career at Jesuit when he was entering the eighth grade. The program provides students from traditionally underserved populations with the tools needed to succeed in a college preparatory environment. Martinez took those lessons to heart during the summer he spent at Jesuit, an experience he describes as “rewarding and intense. HAP gave me a picture of what life at Jesuit would be like.

Not only was I guided by the same faculty who continued to influence me throughout my Jesuit career, but I made some of my closest friends.” Martinez is certain that his Jesuit experience is one that “couldn’t be matched by any other school. Although I graduated four years ago, I still miss Jesuit.” A recent graduate from Fordham University with degrees in international studies and Spanish, Martinez is preparing to spend ten months gaining professional experience in Mexico City as a recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship.

With his size and athletic ability, Reggie Stephens could have succeeded in sports at any school.

Thankfully, he was able to gain more than athletic success at Jesuit.

According to Stephens, “Jesuit is a special place that pushed me to excel in every way—academically, athletically and as a person.”

Stephens was fortunate that Father Postell’s effort to join the UIL succeeded in 2003. He is proud that the Jesuit teams on which he played proved worthy to compete in the UIL by advancing to district championships in basketball and football. That stage presented him with the opportunity to continue in football at Iowa State, where he completed his bachelor’s degree early and began work on an MBA while earning first-team All-Big 12 honors. In 2010, he was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals. He has fond memories of seeing Father Postell on campus every day and describes him as a great inspiration who always had something funny to say and uplift people.

Jose Tello ’91 A fivefold increase in financial aid funding has made a Jesuit education available to thousands of students who, like Jose Tello, would not have been able to attend the school without help. Tello came to Dallas at age nine with his father, a factory worker in Mexico, to seek a better life.

Showing academic promise, Tello was provided with financial help to attend Jesuit. He remembers his initial apprehension to be in an environment that contrasted so sharply with the low-income neighborhood in which he lived, but he also remembers the warm welcome from faculty and students that put his fears to rest. Tello took advantage of all that Jesuit offered, excelling academically, participating in soccer and community service and making lifelong friends. He went on to graduate cum laude from Harvard University before earning a law degree from Loyola Law School. Tello explains that, while he is far from Dallas, the lessons he learned at Jesuit influence the choices he makes, “Each day, I aim to live for the greater glory of God—ad majorem dei gloriam.” Putting his faith in action, Tello has spent his career advocating for workers’ rights for a Los Angeles non-profit legal services organization.

Consistent with his commitment to social justice, Postell extended the school’s legacy as the first racially integrated school in Dallas when he created the city’s first staff position devoted to diversity. Daniel Metcalf ’10 As a home-schooled student before he arrived at Jesuit, Daniel Metcalf didn’t know anyone in the school and describes himself as having been a quiet boy. Freshman football helped him gain confidence and make friends, but rugby—one of the sports added with Father Postell’s emphasis on increasing extracurricular and athletic offerings—literally opened a world of opportunities for him. Since he began playing during his sophomore year at Jesuit, Metcalf has made the most of those opportunities. Rugby made it possible for Metcalf to attend Penn State, where he majors in economics and history. An Under-20 All-American, he played in the Junior World Trophy and the Collegiate All-Star Championship. The sport has enabled him to travel to Canada, Ireland, England and the Republic of Georgia. Of his Jesuit experience, Metcalf says, “Jesuit helped me realize what I am capable of doing.”

Additionally, the school’s Community Service and Social Justice Program has matured into the largest and most comprehensive in the state, serving nearly 90 agencies on a weekly basis and hundreds more through 56,000 student-volunteer hours per year.

Postell is a tireless champion for the needs of the school. His legacy includes three successful development campaigns that have enabled facility, faculty and endowment upgrades that will benefit continued on page 22

After retiring from Mobil Pipeline Co. in 1994, Jerry Durbin ’53 continued working as a consultant for Mobil in Russia, Kazakstan, Azerbeijan, Turkey and Venezuela. He lives in April Sound on Lake Conroe in Montgomery County, TX and his hobbies are golf, cruising, writing songs and poetry. “I also like to read, collect oriental rugs and support the American Indians via casinos!”

Pat Loveland ’56 is an endowed professor at New Mexico State University, where in recognition of his work he has received the Burlington Northern Outstanding Teacher Award, the NMSU Donald C. Roush Award for Teaching Excellence, and the Fort Bliss Teaching Award.

Freddie Schaefer ’57 is busy keeping up with his grandchildren. Kayla is headed to UT San Antonio this fall after graduating from Taylor HS in Katy, TX. Ryan will be a sophomore and plays football and track. Matthew will enter Memorial Parkway Junior High and Brian will enter kindergarten.

Glenn Snyder ’57 retired from electronic sales and marketing after 48 years. With eight grandchildren, he and wife, Sandy, are pretty busy. “Between honey-do’s and various hobbies including flying airplanes, playing the banjo at St. Paul’s Saturday Mass, working on airplanes, time at the farm and occasional trips, I have no time for day-time TV.” Mike Murphy ’59, a 100 % disabled veteran, has been awarded a Soldier’s Medal, four Bronze Star Medals, a Purple Heart, and two Air Medals during his military tour of duty.

1960s Ron Herrin ’60 retired from textile manufacturing in 2006 and now has time to oversee the family real estate investments. For the past 20 years, he and his wife have given their time to one-on-one Christian counseling. “No church affiliation— just independent help for those who hurt. It is very fulfilling!”

Bill Davis ’61 recently celebrated his 41st year in the college textbook industry—36 years with the same company. Both of his children are honor roll students and his wife, Sharon, is the chorale and music director at their church.

Mike Sheaner ’75 received the 2011 Jesuit Gold Ranger Award for his work, along with his father, Herb Sheaner, building the Jesuit-Sheaner Relays into one of the finest high school track events in the country. Steve Kelly ’81, Lt Col, U.S. Marine Corps Retired, and Joe Morales ’81, MSgt, U.S. Marine Corps, Retired, began a journey together that covered 12 states, (PA, DE, MD, VA, NC, SC, GA, FL, AL, MS, LA, TX) visiting family and friends along the way. Steve started from Philadelphia on his 1998 Valkyrie and met Joe on his 2003 Harley Road King in Fayetteville, NC. “Spending two weeks riding 3,700 miles with no media input leads to a lot of thinking, reflection, prayer and figuring out what’s important.”

After 35 years in Dallas, Jim Lesniak ’81 moved to Boulder, CO, for something new and exciting. They live 7,400 feet above Boulder and enjoy mountain biking, skiing and family.

Greg Leveling ’81 is looking forward to his second year as Runaway Bay, TX, city administrator. He is also the owner and president of Professional Protective Services, Inc. providing investigative and personal protective services.

John Regan ’82 has represented the benefits program to members of the Knights of Columbus for 25 years. He currently manages the agents for the Diocese of Dallas, Ft. Worth and Tyler.

Lee Siegmund ’83 and wife, Doreen, celebrated their 10th anniversary by getting married at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Venice, CA. Legally married since 2000, Doreen was initiated into the Catholic Church on Easter Sunday.

They celebrated by driving up Pacific Coast Highway through Big Sur and Monterey.

Jason Terk ’85 is the Chair of Texas Medical Association’s Council on Science and Public Health. Named a “Top Doc” in Fort Worth Texas Magazine for 2010 and 2011, he is the Legislative Committee Chair of Texas Pediatric Society. Jason was named “Best of the Best” pediatrician by the Keller Citizen Newspaper poll of subscribers.

he practiced law for 14 years and recently became the executive director in Dallas for Heroic Media, a pro-life non-profit media organization.

Stan Ledford ’88 lives in Georgia and is based in Newark, NJ flying International B777s for Continental Airlines.

Trey Hammond ’89 lives in St. Louis, MO with his wife, Nancy, a physical therapist, and their four boys: Jacob (8), Lucas (6), Nicholas (4) and Andrew (2). He is an associate professor in the Department of Theological Studies at Saint Louis University, where he serves as the director of the doctoral program.

He was recently named the chair of the department with its 31-member faculty.

He remains passionate about Jesuit education.

James Logan ’89 has appeared in many movies but his latest role in the new Jason Statham film The Mechanic, is getting a lot of press. The Dallas Morning News reported that the first person you see on-screen is James Logan. On James’ website he states, “Man, what a great time! Two months in New Orleans working for director Simon West… an amazing experience!”

Taylor Brinkman ’02 married Talia Gursky in Newport, RI with Robert Woolnough ’02 serving as his best man. The couple lives in Dallas. Taylor graduated from Boston College Law School and is clerking for a federal judge in Fort Worth.

Kelly Welch ’92 and his wife and business partner, Kate Yonkers, celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary and the 10th year anniversary of Welch &Yonkers, LLC., their acupuncture practice. Their office was named an official offsite teaching facility for the Georgetown University Medical program. “Residents in the program come to the office and follow me on clinical rounds throughout the year as part of their training.”

After moving around the country for 11 years working as a television news reporter, Brian Barker ’94 is now living in Portland, OR and working as a communications officer at Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue. The father of a 2-yearold daughter, he and his wife spend their weekends working as ski patrollers on Mount Hood and racing bicycles in the summer.

Ryan Golden ’94 recently began an executive master’s degree program in software engineering at UT Austin. He and wife, Nicole, welcomed their second son, Asher, into their family.

Steve Graham ’94 and wife, Donielle just had baby number four, a boy named Holden Allan Graham. “Sophomore English remains one of my all-time favorites.”

After completing course work at Northwestern University, Matt Keirstead ’94 is working through residencies in prosthetics and orthotics. “Sarah and I think y’all should visit Bend and enjoy the outdoors of central Oregon. Also, nice work, Kieran!”

Todd McGowan ’95 assumed a new role as director of mortgage loan analysis for the correspondent lending channel at CitiBank. He finished a second master’s degree in decision sciences and is now working on a doctorate in information sciences at the University of North Texas.

Nate Stricklen ’95 and his wife, Alli Matthews Stricklen, welcomed their first child Feb. 4, 2011. Ainsley Elizabeth Stricklen was born at 9:58 p.m. and weighed 7 lbs. 14 oz. Her Baptism took place Easter weekend at Emmaus Catholic Parish in Lakeway, TX. Nate is a vice president in commercial brokerage with CB Richard Ellis. Alli is a marcom manager with Freescale Semiconductor. They reside in Austin, TX.

Warren Young ’95 and wife, Anne, are proud to announce the birth of their baby girl, Natalie Anne Young, born Sept. 30, 2010. Warren is the associate athletic trainer at SMU for the men’s basketball team and the men’s and women’s golf teams.

After graduating from the University of California San Francisco with a doctorate in Pharmacy, Curt Allday ’97 works as a pharmacist for Safeway, Inc. He also pursues the arts and has released several albums under the moniker, geppettoGESTAPO, an experimental avant-garde hip hop project based in San Francisco. His wife, Karen, works as a forensic psychologist at San Quentin Prison, and they enjoy the northern California lifestyle with many friends and their two Persian cats, Garfield & Peaches.

Jeff Fellows ’97 is living in Fallon, NV, enjoying his tour at the Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN) as an instructor. “The family is flourishing and we are thrilled to take a break from sea duty and deployments. In bigger news, we are happy to report that we are expecting our third child this fall. We miss all of our friends back home! Take Care.”

Chris Noon ’02 is living in New York City employed as an analyst at an investment banking company. Chris completed the New York Marathon in 4 hours and 8 minutes.

Ryan Higgins ’97 has been reassigned

by Nestle from Jarkarta, Indonesia to Harare, Zimbabwe as head of Channel Category Sales Development for Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

He and his wife, G, are glad they have Ultimate frisbee and scuba diving in Africa.

2000s James Henry ’00 has completed his MBA in finance from SMU and joined Sloan Wealth Management in Dallas as an associate portfolio manager after 6 years at Neuberger Berman.

Patrick Wilson ’00 is a Coloradolicensed attorney living in Wellington, New Zealand for the remainder of 2011.

He works as a legal adviser for the Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand.

The position combines his passion for aviation and the law.

Dana Collins ’01 recently returned from a deployment in Iraq with the Texas Army National Guard. This past November, Dana married attorney, Laura Van Tuyl, in Austin. Together they are reestablishing their law firm which practices family law, estate planning, civil litigation and criminal law.

Omar Nava ’01 was recognized as a Distinguished Graduate when he graduated from the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH on March 24, 2011 with a Master of Science Degree in Applied Physics (with a concentration in Space Physics). His next assignment will be at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California as the Weather Specialty Team Flight Commander.

Evan Benedetto ’02 is an art director at the New York ad agency, Bartle Bogle Hegarty, creating brand strategy for Google, Sprite, Axe and Westin Hotels.

Adrian Sanvictores ’01 married Kathleen Fox at Prince of Peace Church in Houston, TX. Former Jesuit teacher and family friend, Fr. Martinez, officiated the nuptials. The couple honeymooned in Aruba and will reside in San Antonio, TX. Adrian is doing research for various pharmaceutical companies.

John Grabiec ’02 lives in Berlin and has started a magazine called The Travel Almanac. The magazine focuses on travel from the perspective of artists, musicians, filmmakers, etc. The magazine includes interviews, as well as personal travel stories and reviews of the most exceptional hotels worldwide. Tommy Werner ’01 and wife, Karin, are celebrating the birth of their daughter, Elleigh Kalia Werner. Tommy is back from his second deployment in Afghanistan flying the F-16CM for the Air Force. He has been deployed in Afghanistan for 10 out of the last 14 months and made it home just in time for the arrival of his daughter. He is currently stationed at Hill Air Force Base in Utah with the 4th Fighter Squadron.

John Paul Cook ’02 earned his master’s degree in mathematics at the University of Oklahoma and is now working on his doctorate at OU. He and wife, Regina, had their first son, Nicholas James Cook, in October 2010.

Dustin Sheffield ’03 met Ally Hollowell at Auburn University and they were married on Mar. 6, 2010. They moved from Atlanta to Palo Alto, CA in early 2010 to work for a start-up company in Silicon Valley. They enjoy taking frequent ski trips to Lake Tahoe on weekends.

Kyle Walker ’03 received his M.D. from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston in May. He is moving to Boston to begin a psychiatry residency at Harvard this summer.

Luis Arango ’04 received the American Jurisprudence Award in legal research, writing and advocacy at OU College of Law. He has a legal internship at the Dallas and Tarrant County District Attorney’s offices.

Randy Reichenbach ’04 is currently serving as a strike officer on the USS Preble—one of the ships assigned to escort the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier. This portion of the Pacific Fleet is currently off the coast of Japan assisting with humanitarian relief efforts.

Nick Valladarez ’04 recently returned from a six-month deployment to the European theater aboard the fast-attack submarine USS Boise (SSN-764) Bradley Williams ’05 graduated from TCU, Summa Cum Laude in 2009. He was the top student in the economics department and won the Boller Award for an outstanding senior honors presentation. He received his Masters degree in economics from UTD in May and will enter SMU Law School in the fall.

Alumni in the News Ten years ago, while enjoying the success of producing such popular teen movies as “She’s All That,” Rich Hull ’88 felt a desire to do something more. With Halle Berry, he began a project that was to become the awardwinning documentary “For Love of Liberty: The Story of America’s Black Patriots.” The film details the accomplishments and sacrifices of African American service men and women since the Revolutionary War. Letters, diaries, military records and historical accounts bring to light never-beforetold stories of brave Americans who sometimes did not enjoy the rights they fought to protect.

Beginning with an introduction filmed at the Pentagon by then-Secretary of State Colin Powell, the stories are brought to life by a star-studded cast that includes Morgan Freeman, Danny Glover, Walter Cronkite, Bill Cosby, Robert Duvall, Susan Sarandon and dozens more. Halle Berry serves as the on-camera host.

The resulting film is so compelling that “For Love of Liberty” beat out the highly touted “Waiting for Superman” for the NAACP Image Award for best documentary. The award celebrates “outstanding achievements and performances of people of color in the arts as well as those individuals or groups who promote social justice through their creative endeavors.”

Hull is proud of the connection between the award and the Jesuit emphasis on promoting social justice. He confirms that “there’s no question that Jesuit prepared me for Hollywood and for life.” He describes a lesson shared with him by David Oglesby, his freshman honors English teacher,

Jay Wellik ’06 is studying natural hazards preparedness and active volcanology through Michigan Tech’s Peace Corps Masters International program. His 27-month Peace Corps service program will have him teaching high school English in East Java, Indonesia while he conducts his field studies.

Hull reflects that the echo of “men for others” from his Jesuit days was one of many ways the school continues to influence his life. He describes a visit by their freshman theology teacher, Father Jeff Dillon, S.J., a sick classmate in Seattle last year as one of many examples of “the Jesuit bond that continues to be important to me.”

Daniel Metcalf ’10 was selected to the Men’s Junior All-American Under-20s squad to represent the USA in Junior World Rugby Trophy tournament. The team will train in London before heading to Russia for the tournament.

John P. Buettner ’44 John Buettner, of Lake Jackson, TX, passed away on Mar. 29, 2011. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Catherine Buettner; two daughters, Mary Buettner and Ann Buettner Honea; and three grandsons. Born in Peoria, IL, he graduated from Jesuit High School in Dallas.

He received his B.S. and Master’s degrees in chemical engineering from Rice University and a master’s degree in chemistry from Texas A&M. He was employed by Texas Dow Operations for 39 years. He was an avid reader, gardener, and golfer and loved his family and dog, Willow.

Bob Conway passed away Nov. 29, 2010 at the age of 75. He is survived by his sister, Louise Mehan, and his brother, Leo Conway ’53. His brother, Patrick ’47, passed away in 2006.

After graduating from Jesuit, Bob served in the U.S. Navy. He donated his body to the UT Southwestern Medical School at Dallas for the benefit of science.

Felix Alfieri, of Atlanta, GA, passed away Jan. 17, 2011. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Janie Alfieri; son, Tony Alfieri; daughter, Anna Maria Goldstein; son, Victor Alfieri; six granddaughters who were the love of his life; brother, Jerry Alfieri ’62; and sister, Antoinette Carr.

Ronald D. Brady ’48 Ronald Brady, loving husband, father and grandfather passed away on April 18, 2011.

Ron was born in Guilford, MO. He owned Brady Furniture in Dallas for 37 years until he retired. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Beverly; his five children, Michele Janes, Beverly Tackett, Kathy Rosenberg, Ron Brady, and Shawn Brady; and 10 grandchildren.

Laurance W. Lucas ’55 Luke Lucas, of Festus, MO, passed away Jan. 22, 2011. Born in Dallas, he attended Jesuit High School and graduated from St. Edward’s University in Austin. He later moved to Memphis, TN where he lived for 36 years, working as a regional sales representative.

Luke was an ardent bridge player and was responsible for starting two clubs in the Festus area. He also taught bridge to middle school students, at the YMCA, and the public libraries. He is survived by five children, 22 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Nicholas G. Mehl ’60 Nick Mehl passed away Nov. 5, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer. After graduating from Jesuit High School, he attended the University of Notre Dame, and was a devoted ND football fan. Nick had a long career as a CPA and loved working for Chapman Construction. Nick is survived by his wife of 44 years, Bettie, three children and four grandchildren.

Frank L. Horak ’49 Frank Horak passed away Nov. 3, 2010 at Baylor Hospital in Dallas. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Delores Horak; daughters, Jennifer Horak Pali and Julie Horak of Dallas; and twin brother, Emil J. Horak ’49. Frank was a member of the band at Jesuit High School and a long time parishioner at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Dallas.

Arthur W. Wear ’61

F. Steven Sellers ’59 Steve Sellers passed away on Jan. 29, 2011.

Born in Dallas, he was a graduate of Jesuit High School and St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. He worked for, and then owned, The Flag Store and Sellers Advertising. Steve was a lifetime member at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Anne Marie Sellers, three children and eight grandchildren.

A graduate of Stephen F. Austin University with a degree in Business Administration, Arthur spent his working career as a longtime employee of HAS Marine Construction and later opened his own company, A.W. Wear & Co. He was a lover of the outdoors and an avid football fan, especially faithful to his beloved Longhorns. Most of all, he was a devoted husband and a loving father.

Jeffrey Seabrook, of Fort Davis, TX, passed away Nov. 10, 2010. Jeffrey is survived by his wife of 35 years, Diane Seabrook; daughter, Becky Seabrook; brother, John Seabrook ’61; and sister Sue Ellen Seabrook. He was a graduate of the University of Texas and his master’s degree in entomology from the University of Hawaii helped him start his own pest management business. Jeffrey loved the outdoors and was passionate about history. He especially enjoyed visiting Civil War historic sites.

Born in Philadelphia, Jamie Burns passed away April 12, 2011 in Dallas, TX. His survivors include his children, Maggie and Patrick Burns; and wife, Carla Burns. Jamie was an ESL teacher at Brookhaven College, where he was loved by all of his students. A life-long cyclist, he raced with teams in the Dallas area and went on several long-distance bike trips across the U.S. and abroad.

Victor Barlow, was born in Fort Worth, TX, to Joan and Tom Barlow ’60. He passed away Apr. 27, 2011 in Austin, TX. He is survived by Bettina Babbitt and sister, Melissa Motta. Victor was loved by all his family and friends. He was especially fond of his nieces and nephews, James and Miranda.

Lee A. Falvo ’95

P. Anthony Schurba ’72 Anthony Schurba lost his battle with cancer on Nov. 5, 2010. Raised near White Rock Lake, he was a well-known local artist. His work was shown at numerous places including the Children’s Medical Center of Dallas, the McKinney Avenue Contemporary, and the Arlington Museum of Art. Before his death, a Dallas art gallery held an exhibit featuring all the remaining pieces of his art collection. His wish to have the public enjoy his work while still alive was realized.

Lee Falvo, the eldest child of James and Mary Jo Falvo, passed away Dec. 2, 2010.

After graduating from Jesuit, Lee attended Michael J. Werr ’76 the University of Oklahoma and pledged Phi Gamma Delta. He transferred to University Born in 1958, Michael Werr passed away on of Texas at Arlington where he majored in Jan. 20, 2011. After graduating from Jesuit College Preparatory he attended Austin College business administration. A licensed Texas real estate salesperson he worked for DFW in Sherman, TX. Advisors in Dallas. He loved helping and caring for animals especially his dog, Susie Q, and cat, Bootsie.

Raymond J. Steele ’78

Michael A. Barragan ’75 Michael Barragan died Apr. 24, 2011. He is survived by his wife, Beverly and daughter, Kathryn. After graduating from Jesuit, he attended the University of Texas at Austin where he earned his B.S. in political science and began his affection for all things Longhorn.

He remained in Austin at UT and received his JD in 1982. He joined the law firm of Gardere & Wynne and worked there for almost twenty years. In 2003, he opened his own practice, specializing in probate litigation.

Ray Steele was born in Detroit, MI, and died Dec. 2, 2010 in McKinney, TX. He attended school at St. Paul the Apostle Elementary and Jesuit College Preparatory before going on to earn his BSBA in Management Information Systems at the University of Texas at Dallas.

He was worked at Torchmark Insurance as a computer programmer, and enjoyed golf in his spare time. Ray was preceded in death by his mother, Dolores Kusiak Steele.

Constantino A. Fontes ’10 Constantino Fontes died March 21, 2011 in Tuscaloosa, AL. He is the son of Michael and Madeleine Fontes and the brother of Gabriella and Pia Fontes. A member of the Jesuit swim team and an honors graduate of Jesuit in 2010, he was a freshman in the Honors College at the University of Alabama. He never spoke an ill word nor failed to share a smile with others and his arms were always open to embrace.

Entrusted by the Community A visit to campus any time of day confirms the important role of volunteers at Jesuit Dallas. One group of volunteers—the School Board of Trustees—provides support that pervades the entire Jesuit experience. Members of The School Board of Trustees are entrusted by the community to manage all aspects of the school while acting in the best interests of students, alumni, faculty, parents and friends. Through its responsibility for setting policy, the board determines the identity of the school in important ways. The trustees determine enrollment, approve the annual tuition rate, hire and evaluate the president, approve significant expenditures and hold the administration responsible for maintaining Jesuit identity.

Members of the board bring expertise in management, law, finance, education, theology, technology, and more. The women and men on the board draw upon this expertise and an understanding of the Jesuit mission to make decisions that advance the school. Typically, board members serve for three to six years.

Outgoing Chairman of the Board Charles “Chick” Young is exceptional in both length of service and impact. In the twelve years during which he served, the board achieved milestones including a doubling of financial aid, purchases of real estate and other profitable investments that strengthened the school’s financial standing, improvements to compensation and benefits to attract exceptional teachers, and three successful capital campaigns that allowed improvements and a three-fold expansion of facilities.

Dianne and Chick Young have provided years of faithful support to Jesuit.

While the quantifiable improvements during Young’s tenure are impressive, his vision and values have shaped equally important qualitative changes. His commitment to social justice influenced every aspect of his term. His emphasis on enriching the diversity of the school is manifest in increased opportunities for traditionally underserved populations, including enrollment, financial aid, cultural sensitivity and academic support services. Our community is richer for these efforts as it is by all the ways in which Young has impacted the school. His creativity and professional management oversight leave Jesuit Dallas a far better institution than he found it.

Commenting on the contributions of Young, whose tenure on the board nearly parallels his own time as Jesuit President, Philip Postell, S.J. said, “His guidance, generosity and devotion are instrumental to the success of Jesuit Dallas. His example of sincere humility is an inspiration.” I echo Father Postell’s sentiment, and offer the thanks of the entire Jesuit community to Charles M. Young.
