HEAD A MESSAGE COACHFROM CHARLIE THEDELONG MEINTSER FAMILY Soccer was in our father’s blood. He loved to play, teach, referee, and coach. We have many memories of when we were little, going to watch him play on the GermanAmerican soccer team on Sundays, sitting on the sideline and cheering for him. There was always a gleam in his eye in that he was doing something he loved. When he got older and couldn’t play as much, he started refereeing and coaching. Jesuit was a perfect match for him. Our family shared the same values and beliefs that the School held. He believed that each player should have a chance to play, fairly and cleanly, and to always respect players on both sides. At home, he would always be thinking about strategies, offense and defense, and which players to put where. When we saw him doing that, there was that gleam in his eye again. After he retired from coaching, and the tournament was established, he loved to come and watch all the games. He visited with the coaches, players, soccer alumni and friends he had made throughout the years. We came to many of the tournaments and sat with him while he followed each game intensely. We could still see that gleam in his eye. We are always humbled by this tournament and we know my father was too. It was established to honor him, but he felt that he was already honored to be a part of his soccer tradition that has grown at Jesuit and throughout the Metroplex. It is a great privilege to see this tournament, now in its 44th year, carry on the same standards that our father lived by. Good luck to all the participants of the 2024 Jesuit-Meintser Soccer Invitational. The Meintsers Erik Meintser ’74 Hans Meintser ’68 Anneke Dishaw Jocelyn Meintser

ABOUT HANK MEINTSER

The annual Jesuit-Meintser Soccer Invitational is named in honor of Henk Meintser, who founded the Jesuit Dallas soccer program and served as head coach for 22 years.

Meintser was picked up by the Germans and sent to a slave-labor camp. In 1944, he was liberated by American forces and served as a translator.

To many soccer enthusiasts in the Metroplex, Meintser was the Dean of North Texas soccer. He devoted more than half a century to the game, making many contributions to the sport. One of the founding members of the North Texas Soccer Association, Meintser served as its first president. He also served as the president of the North Texas Referees Association. In 1960, Meintser founded the Jesuit Dallas soccer program and began to build a foundation for the School’s winning tradition. The Jesuit Dallas program secured 17 state titles during its time in the Texas Catholic Interscholastic League (TCIL), then became the first private school in Texas history to win a UIL State Championship after defeating Strake Jesuit in penalty kicks to capture the 2010 UIL 5A State Championship. Jesuit would win its second state title in 2017, defeating Arlington Sam Houston, 2-1, in overtime to secure the UIL 6A title. Born in Amsterdam on September 27, 1923, Henricus Meintser played soccer for many clubs in his home city during his early years. During the occupation of the Netherlands in World War II,

After the war, he stayed in touch with an American officer from Texas whom he had befriended. In 1949, Meintser married Petronella (Nel) and moved to Texas. The young couple worked hard to succeed in their new setting and eventually settled in Dallas. Meintser started a prosperous accounting career, one that allowed him the opportunity to sponsor his brothers and sisters-inlaw as they immigrated to America. In addition to coaching at Jesuit Dallas, Meintser coached at St. Rita Catholic School and the University of Dallas, founding the soccer programs at both locations. Meintser retired in 1982 and Jesuit Dallas played the inaugural Jesuit-Meintser Soccer Invitational, geared to feature the area’s top teams and players, that same year. Meintser was inaugurated into the North Texas Hall of Fame in 1990 and was a member of Jesuit’s inaugural Blue and Gold Sports Hall of Fame class in 1999.
