It is easy for me to express the dominant emotion I feel as we conclude our We Are Jesuit campaign – for it is a profound sense of gratitude. When we kicked off the campaign in 2007, no one envisioned that we would soon be in the throes of a great global recession. The fact that the campaign was successfully concluded during these trying times magnifies the gratitude I feel. St. Ignatius celebrates gratitude in his Spiritual Exercises, expressing how all good things and gifts descend from God. The work that Jesuit Dallas is entrusted to undertake in educating our students for competence, conscience and compassion is sustained by the success of our campaign. I have to believe that the success of this campaign is also manifested in the sustenance that it brings to the ultimate purpose of Jesuit education; the realization of the Kingdom of God in the whole of human society. With every trip through the hallways of Jesuit and every walk on the Jesuit campus, one gets touched by the fruits of the We Are Jesuit campaign. Sometimes this harvest is easy to visualize for it takes the form of bricks and mortar in the shape of classrooms, learning spaces, gathering halls, and athletic areas. It can also be seen and heard in the joy of learning, the laughter between student and teacher, and in the brotherly camaraderie that is so infused in the Jesuit community. Still, other times and perhaps in a much more profound realization, it takes the form of lives being changed and a future being forged for our world that can be characterized by the single word—hope. Hope for a bright future for our world that is brought about by the graduates we send out into the world as Men for Others. Everything we undertake at Jesuit is made possible through the love of God as manifested by our partners in this mission of Jesuit education. The people who make up a Jesuit school are numerous: students, faculty, parents, alumni, and benefactors. It is through the generosity of you, our partner in this great mission that the Jesuit education in Dallas remains strong and vibrant, an instrument for God’s work and a beacon of hope for the future of us all.

Jesuit Spring Theater: Rumors and Spring One Acts & Musical Revue Jesuit Theater has added another hit to its repertoire with Neil Simon’s Rumors. The cast of 15 performed to packed houses over two weekends in April. Then for the first time in nearly a decade, there was music on the Jesuit stage when the Jesuit Musical Revue performed hits from nine Broadway shows during the always-funny Spring One Acts. A record-breaking 3,200 tickets were sold during the 2012-13 theater season. Next year’s shows are already generating excitement; be sure to see The Crucible this fall and the Mark Twain comedy Is He Dead? next spring.

After heartfelt introductions by Mike Earsing, Lyne Hebig, her husband, Mike, and son, James ’09 (pictured, bottom-right), Lisa graciously accepted the award for her many years of service to Jesuit Dallas. In addition to her time spent in the JWA, Lisa has co-chaired the MAGIS Golf Classic three times, planned auction gift-gathering parties, co-chaired Adopta-Family weekend, assisted with homecoming mums, and participated in the Jesuit Dallas Museum’s Art League.

Celebration Auction 2013: Run for the Roses The 2013 Celebration Auction, led by co-chairwomen Christine Buckley and Patti Bellinger (pictured, left), was a successful Run for the Roses. Thanks to the support of hundreds of volunteers and generous supporters, the event was an evening to remember. At the wrap-up party in May, Buckley and Bellinger presented President Mike Earsing and Jack Wensinger ’77, Chairman of the Jesuit Foundation, with a check for more than $600,000 (pictured, above). The raised funds will provide financial aid to students whose families could not otherwise afford to send their sons to Jesuit. Mark your calendar for March 29, 2014, when the Celebration Auction returns to the Westin Galleria for the 1920s-themed Gatsby Gala.

Jesuit Dallas President Mike Earsing and Jesuit Dallas Foundation President Jack Wensinger ’77 present the 2013 Patrick H. Koch, S.J. Award to Chick and Dianne Young. Photo credit: Vernon Mullen ’05
Chick and Dianne Young Presented with the Patrick H. Koch, S.J. Award Applying their creativity, imagination and professionalism with an unwavering support for Jesuit Dallas, Charles “Chick” and Dianne Young have remained intimately connected with the vision of Jesuit as a Catholic institution committed to academic excellence, formation of the whole person, and an active pledge to justice. Through the establishment of the Young Family Foundation Trust, their work as honorary chairs of the Celebration Auction, and numerous philanthropic endeavors, the Young’s have modeled their lives by espousing the Jesuit ideals of commitment to service and the pursuit of excellence. Beginning in the 1960s when he accepted a position at NASA as a programmer assisting with the Saturn project and development for what would become the Space Shuttle, Chick’s colorful career reflected the dizzying pace of the high-tech revolution. From aerospace, he transitioned to banking where he played a leading role in the development and marketing of Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) software. As a partner with Information Processing Corporation (IPC), Chick pioneered a new application that revolutionized the banking industry by creating new efficiencies through the

consolidation of operations. He was one of the first entrepreneurs to recognize that outsourcing could extend state-ofthe-art technology, talent and resources to companies in nearly any industry. A devoted mother and longtime volunteer committed to community service, leadership development and cultural education, Dianne has served on the Jesuit Dallas Financial Aid Committee for the last 10 years. Along with her daughter, she was also a founding member of the Golden Corridor Chapter of the National Charity League, whose mission is to foster mother-daughter relationships in a philanthropic organization committed to inspiring a legacy of social awareness and compassion. Along with her husband, Dianne is deeply involved with the Hale Kau Kau program, which is centered on feeding the hungry in the South Maui community. In addition to continued support to several Catholic schools in Colorado and Texas, Dianne’s prime focus is Angels’ Place, a hospice care in New Orleans for children diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses. Her work with the program also includes assistance to families as they emotionally struggle for understanding. Chairman Emeritus of the Jesuit Dallas Board of Trustees, Chick’s 13 years on the board is exceptional in both length
of service and impact. In 1994, he applied his corporate experience to the challenge of balancing funding a modern Catholic high school with the justice and diversity demands of the Jesuit philosophy of education. Through his leadership, the trustees guided the school through a period of tremendous growth and maturation that was highlighted by three successful capital campaigns, improvements to compensation and benefits to attract and retain exceptional teachers, the purchasing of real estate and other profitable investments that strengthened Jesuit Dallas’ financial standing, and the doubling of needbased financial aid. Chick and Dianne’s support, which also includes a gift to assist in building facilities and bolstering an endowment fund for scholarships, has served as the impetus for support from other donors, resulting in unprecedented contributions to the school. Chick and Dianne’s leadership reflects a commitment to excellence and dedication to Jesuit Dallas’ mission of forming young men who are equipped and willing to serve others. Their devotion to Jesuit is marked by a rare blend of community involvement, family dedication, creativity, and courage. Jesuit Dallas will be forever grateful for their work, wisdom, and generosity.

Hockey Celebrates Historic Season Behind a stunning state championship and the program’s first-ever trip to the USA Hockey High School National Championships, Jesuit Dallas hockey provided an emphatic exclamation point to a memorable year in Ranger athletics. On March 7, Jesuit Dallas knocked off two-time defending state champion Plano West, 4-2, en route to the 2013 Texas High School State Championship. Alex Mersch ’13 keyed the thrilling victory with a hat trick, which also decided the championship of the AT&T Metroplex High School Hockey League. The win also cemented an invitation for Jesuit to compete at nationals, where the team registered a 2-1 record in pool play. Under the tutelage of first-year head coach Kevin Smith, Jesuit established a single-season school record with 24 wins (24-2-1) en route to its third state crown and first since 2008. Hayden Meshell ’13, who was named the AT&T Metroplex Hockey Varsity Offensive Player of the Year, capped his high school career as Jesuit’s all-time leading scorer. Drew Brunts ’13 also drew postseason laurels by being named to the All-Scholastic Team. Meshell and Brunts joined senior forwards Nick Alexander and John Leflore, and freshman goalie George McBey as selections to the AT&T Metroplex High School Hockey League Varsity All-Star Game, which was held at the American Airlines Center, home of the Dallas Stars. The Rangers, who finished the year as the state’s top-ranked team, dropped a hard-fought, 4-3, decision to eventual national champion Saint Margarita (Calif.) on the opening night of the national championship tournament. Jesuit bounced back on the second day of action with a 6-5 shootout victory over John Jay (N.Y.) and closed out the banner campaign with a 3-2 victory over East Lake (Fla.).

The campaign represents a celebration of achievement for the Jesuit Dallas community and its triumph is an affirmation of the role Jesuit has played in the formation of Men for Others. While an extensive physical transformation showcases the success of the five-year campaign, the unparalleled support from the school’s farreaching community has helped solidify Jesuit’s legacy as an academic and spiritual beacon. “The most satisfying part of the campaign was the overwhelming participation from not only alumni, but parents, grandparents, and friends of the school,” remarked campaign co-chair Mike Terry. “Although I am not an alumnus, Jesuit Dallas has influenced and had a major impact in my life as well as my family’s. I also know that each and every family connected to the school has a similar story to tell.” The start of the largest campaign undertaken in Jesuit’s 70-year history began in earnest during the summer of 2007. The Board of Trustees authorized a working goal of $26.5 million, but through outstanding leadership, the hard work of the administration, and an impressive display of devotion from the extended community, the campaign far exceeded its initial expectations. When the books finally closed in 2012,
1,073 donors had contributed $30,580,642.38. “Our community believes in Jesuit’s mission and has seen the school’s immeasurable benefits and influence in the lives of our sons,” continued Terry. “Jesuit Dallas has uniqueness in spirit that you cannot get anywhere else, and while the young men are attracted by the outstanding education, they also gain an enrichment of faith to become great examples of future servant leaders.” In addition to the nearly $24 million in capital projects, $6.5 million was raised to strengthen the endowment. With an emphasis on the Jesuit Fund for Excellence, this fund will help control future increases in tuition, ensure that any qualified young man will be able to attend Jesuit Dallas without regard of their ability to pay, and allow the school flexibility to respond to unforeseen opportunities and needs. “As the campaign was being conceived, it became evident that our community wanted it to be comprehensive, and include a significant augmentation to the endowment along
with funding for capital projects,” said Vice President of Institutional Advancement Chuck Vinson. “The focus on both current and future needs reinforces our commitment to provide a peerless education for today’s students as well as future generations.” The immediate impact of the campaign has greatly enhanced Jesuit’s already strong admissions demand. The construction and remodeling of the library, 30 classrooms, athletic stadium, locker rooms, and auditorium has resulted in a major change to the look and feel of campus. While the school’s original facilities were built to accommodate 600 students, the increase in enrollment combined with an ever-expanding number of extracurricular activities, signaled the need to overhaul the existing space. In the fiveyear process of renovating and rebuilding, over 40% of the campus’ architecture was upgraded while another 50,000 square feet of building space was added to campus. Despite the radical changes, the impact on student and Jesuit community life was minimal and all of the improvements were completed without any financial impact on tuition. “From the very beginning, we were mindful to limit the disruptions to our students,” reflected President Mike Earsing. “We didn’t want our boys to leave Jesuit with a lasting memory of construction. The culture that we have established has always been one of support, and we remained focused on being responsive to the needs of our students while facilitating major structural changes that would make for a healthier student body as Jesuit Dallas moves into the future.”
With renovations complete, the change in experience for the students has been tremendous. The library space was gutted and transformed into an information commons, while separate rooms were designed for art exhibits and a historical library. Often underutilized prior to the change, the space is now continually packed with students conducting a myriad of technology related projects along with quiet study in the various conference rooms. The addition of 18 classrooms and the renovation of an another 30 has created a more comfortable environment for both faculty and students, while the massive changes to the auditorium in Hughes Hall has sparked a beehive of activity in a space that was barely used. “The academic environment at Jesuit Dallas cannot be taken for granted,” said campaign co-chair Chick Young. “From the very beginning of the campaign, we were steadfast in identifying the best solutions to strengthen the learning climate while implementing architectural changes that reinforced our commitment to an outstanding education.”
The classroom expansion is especially important as it provides Jesuit students with better flexibility in coordinating their course schedule. In addition, it marks an opportunity to introduce more course offerings in keeping up with the advancement in today’s curriculum which will better prepare our students for higher learning. The athletic stadium, which was the recipient of improved sound and lighting systems, now serves as a gathering point for many of Jesuit’s 18 varsity sports. The upgrades in the stadium also included improved access to spectator seating, new concession stands and

press box, and an overhaul to the restroom area. The baseball stadium also received a boost as the addition of sunken dugouts, premium spectator seating and a new press box have transformed the space into one of the best high school facilities in the area. Seeing the cascading water amenity around the Father Postell cross and the athletic tower with “JESUIT” prominently displayed on the facade, serves as a constant reminder to our students and fans in the athletic complex of who we are and the Jesuit mission. Built on the footprint of the original locker rooms, the athletic tower is a marvel not only in its design but by how quickly the space has become an integral part of student life.
In addition to expanded locker rooms and new coaching suites, the hallmark of the facility is a 9,000-square foot weight room, which with its state-of-the-art construction and amenities, would be the envy of most small colleges. “To see the athletic tower, and specifically, our performance enhancement facility is something that has been phenomenal,” said Earsing. “The decision to place the weight room on the top floor was intentional. Not only were we focused on providing our students with the tools to become physically stronger, but we were also conscious of designing an open, airy, well-lit space that would help make our students stronger physiologically.”
Although they may not be as visible as some of the striking capital improvements, a number of other changes materialized during the campaign that have created a significant affect in the learning environment. Chief among the changes was replacing the infrastructure of the heating and cooling systems, the installation of new carpeting and lighting, new efficiencies in the cafeteria, and the move to a wireless network throughout campus. Of course the senior class might say the greatest improvement is the artificial turf in the Hansen Senior Courtyard that allows for year-round activity as well as an “ant free” lounging area to relax. The Jesuit community has always been supportive of Jesuit and its mission, although the We Are Jesuit campaign provided tangible testimony of the value in a Jesuit Dallas education. As Mike Terry reminded, “It is with great care and deliberation that we seek the best for our student body. We must continue to improve the environment for learning, which in turn will attract and retain the best faculty around. The success of the We Are Jesuit campaign has set the stage and created the atmosphere for Jesuit Dallas to move into the next generation.”
The campaign was a product of professional hunger, educational scrutiny, and faith inspiration. We felt limited by space restrictions, growing tuition, and limited athletic and academic facilities, all of which impact morale and instructional efficacy. We spent years looking at real estate, increasing financial strength, and assessing our present space. We looked at improvements for extracurricular activity and seriously addressed quality of education. The impetus toward improvement and growth helped us to evolve into a status which places us second to none in the Greater Dallas area.

WE ARE JESUIT CAMPAIGN ACCOMPLISHMENTS Endowment $6.5 Million
Because Jesuit is committed to educating qualified young men without regard for their ability to pay, maintaining a robust endowment is vital. The Jesuit Fund for Excellence is a permanent endowment that provides a predictable source of funding. This endowment will enable financial aid to continue while limiting tuition increases, supporting faculty development and academic and extracurricular programs, and providing the administration the flexibility to respond to opportunities that arise.
Facilities $24 Million
Jesuit is committed to offering an ideal environment for formation of its students. Such an environment provides sufficient space, appropriate resources, and effective tools. To honor that commitment, Jesuit identified the following needs:
Student Commons, Counseling and Student Services The auditorium was transformed into a multi-use Student Commons that provides meeting space for 300 people with audiovisual display capabilities. It also houses the Office of Student Affairs and the Office of Campus Ministry. In addition, the space yielded counseling offices, enabling the creation of six classrooms in the space previously devoted to counseling offices.

Stadium Renovation
The library was restructured to create an information commons that meets all student study needs. The traditional library area houses print works in a comfortable environment for reading while another area houses computer workstations and worktables for portable computing devices. Additional space accommodates group work and study.
Our stadium is used for competition yearround by seven sports. Eleven additional sports use it for training and conditioning. Renovations provide a safe and comfortable environment for athletes and spectators:

Classrooms
Athletic Complex
Baseball Stadium
A wing constructed on the northeast corner of campus added eleven classrooms. This space and the six classrooms created through the auditorium conversion allow improved course scheduling, as well as additions to the curriculum. The new wing houses two rooms equipped with language learning laboratory equipment that improves foreign language proficiency. The original 1962-built classrooms were renovated and updated to meet modern teaching requirements.
Enrollment has nearly doubled since the original athletic facilities were built. In addition, the number of sports in which students compete has increased to 18. A new structure meets the needs of these students with locker rooms, training facilities, coaches’ offices, and modern concession stands.
The baseball stadium was improved by the addition of sunken dugouts, premium spectator seating, a press box, and a new backstop structure. These upgrades improve asthetics and safety.

Just Super! For 70 years Jesuit Dallas has showcased a rich athletic history that has included over 100 state championships and a number of student-athletes who have navigated their way into the professional ranks. In 2010, Reggie Stephens ’05 made history by becoming the first Jesuit alumnus to be selected at the annual NFL Draft. This past February, Stephens accomplished another historical first as the Baltimore Ravens hoisted the Vince Lombardi Trophy following a rousing victory over San Francisco in Super Bowl XLVII. Getting a call in early January, Stephens joined the Ravens organization just in time for the postseason, and although he didn’t play during Baltimore’s impressive postseason run, his impact within the organization was immediate and set the stage for a bright future. “The timing of the call was impeccable,” offered Stephens. “I was headed to Arizona to begin my offseason training and my luggage was already in Phoenix. It was such an incredible blessing.” Stephens understands how volatile life can be as a professional athlete. The 6'3", 300-pound offensive lineman was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals just three years ago, but has already served six stints in the league with four different teams. And while he maintains high aspirations for his athletic future, he’s quick to point out that his experience at Jesuit Dallas laid the foundation for his success as he transitioned to Iowa State University. “The education I received at Jesuit is incomparable. My mom always stressed academics, and I’m so glad that she did. The academic rigor at Jesuit fully prepared me for life as a college athlete, and that was tremendously helpful in my development as a player.” Stephens, who shared that his most memorable moment in high school was the day Jesuit received the news it was joining the UIL, points to the camaraderie among friends and guidance from the staff in facilitating his academic, athletic and spiritual growth. “Jesuit Dallas is such an amazing community and I’m proof of the positive impact that our teachers and administrators have on its students. When I first came to Jesuit I had no intention of playing football, but I have Coach Wunderlick to thank for changing my focus. Coach Hickman shaped my football career, and I’m still implementing the techniques he taught me.” “Then there are the administrators,” continued Stephens. “I know they touch so many people in meaningful ways every day, but from Mr. Donahue to my junior counselor, Mr. Fitzsimmons, their perspective and counsel helped make me the man I am today. I am especially grateful for Father Postell, who encouraged my pursuits and always took the time to offer his wisdom and guidance.” As Stephens prepares for NFL mini-camp, he is encouraged by his own development and excited for the opportunity to suit up for the defending world champions. This year marks the first time that he has participated in a full off-season program with the same team and he has been projected second or third on the Ravens’ depth chart at center by numerous publications. “This is the best off-season I’ve ever had. There’s no substitute for experience and my commitment level has never been higher. Beyond my academic success, Jesuit Dallas always fostered my competitive spirit, and those lessons in discipline and determination have been invaluable. My experience at Jesuit will always remain a constant source of inspiration.”

A L A S T I N G L EG ACY The message is simple. Inspiration. At least that served as Paul Billings ’83 motivation when he gifted a $1 million life insurance policy in the name of Jesuit Dallas. A second generation alumnus entrenched in the school’s mission of developing Men for Others, Billings’ enthusiasm for Jesuit and its impact as an educational and spiritual beacon is evident from the get-go. “Attending Jesuit Dallas was one of the single best experiences of my life,” reflected Billings. “As I look back at that time in my life, I realize how my education at Jesuit helped shape my professional path. The academic rigor fully prepared me for college, but the camaraderie and life-long friendships make up my fondest memories.” Billings, who joined the Jesuit Dallas Alumni Board immediately after college, also spent six years as a member of the Jesuit Dallas Foundation Board. His career has included a distinguished record of service to the school, but it’s his most recent display of devotion that will ultimately have the greatest impact. “My drive has been fueled by my love for the school and the people who went here. I wanted to leave a significant gift that would underscore what Jesuit has meant in my life, but I didn’t have millions to give. That’s why planned giving had so much appeal for me. It provided the best opportunity to make a transformative contribution at a relatively low cost.” In 2005, Paul and his wife started the Paul and Kristy Billings Scholarship Fund. He began the process of making a planned gift without any considerations to estate planning. It was his keen understanding regarding the rising cost of education and his ability to contribute to Jesuit’s future that guided his involvement. “Beyond everything else, joining the St. Ignatius Society was about providing scholarship opportunities to those in need,” continued Billings. “I want future generations to be able to share that experience. My dad was on work grant when he attended Jesuit, and for the students that are on financial aid, it’s a big deal for me to see them being able to attend.” “There’s never a perfect time to make a planned gift, but I was glad that I chose to participate in Jesuit’s future so early in my life. My hope is that other alumni will follow the example set by myself and others. Their willingness to invest will have a huge impact, and will enable Jesuit to maintain its position as one of the finest college preparatory schools in the nation.”
The St. Ignatius Legacy Society was founded in 1992 to recognize individuals who have established bequests or other planned gifts to benefit Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas. This generosity from our members places an enduring imprint on Jesuit and expresses faith in our educational mission: cultivating a community of men committed to excellence, faith and service to others. We acknowledge these individuals for their committment to Jesuit’s future.
