SMALL BUT MIGHTY – T-shaped steel posts from Jacksons Fencing Fencing and security solutions manufacturer Jacksons Fencing has responded to industry demand and expanded its range of premium quality products by launching a new metal post, Mi-T®. These new posts reflect emerging market trends and offer a sustainable alternative to tackle the destructive nature of concrete posts.

Available in lengths of 2.7m, Mi-T® posts can be used with Jacksons’ framed timber fence panels. They’re constructed from hot-dip galvanised steel, to protect them from rust and corrosion, and they can also be powder coated in anthracite grey for a stylish finish. From the rear of the panels, a narrow strip of steel is visible where the panels are fixed to the post. However, from the front, the post can hardly be seen, creating a seamless fencing run with no posts to interrupt the continuity. With just a population of 2,000, Antarctica is the coldest, driest and windiest continent on earth, so why would you wish to be there? Well, with governments and society across the globe now coming to terms with the climate change crisis, work has been continuing in the Antarctic with some of the world’s top scientists who are identifying the damage we are causing to our only home. Back in the mid-1980’s it was scientists in the Antarctic who uncovered the hole in the ozone layer. Consequently, we managed to ban the use of gases like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in spray cans and refrigerants which break down ozone molecules in the upper atmosphere. The hole in our ozone layer continues to reduce due to the quick action taken across the globe, we now need to do the same for CO2, which is a much greater challenge.

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) continues to undertake groundbreaking research and maintains a Research Station located 67º south on Adelaide

Island which was established in 1975. Known as Rothera, the busy station is used as a hub for other countries working in the area, offering a landing strip and wharf. The site has continued to develop over the years and in 2018 work began on the new Discovery Building, named to commemorate the discovery of Antarctica 200 years ago by the British naval officer Edward Bransfield in 1820. Designed by Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation Partnership, which includes construction partner BAM and their team, Hugh Broughton Architects and design consultants Sweco, with Ramboll acting as BAS’s Technical Advisers, with their team NORR architects and Turner & Townsend. The new building replaces some of the current buildings on the site which are close to the end of their economic life. Construction can only take place in the summer months with the next construction team due to travel

to site from the UK in December 2021 and returning in Spring 2022. The construction team returning in March 2021 have successfully completed the groundworks for the new building. The new operations building will not only offer scientists a far better working environment but will help reduce costs by minimising maintenance and maximising insulation. The two-storey 4,500m2 building will contain preparation areas for field expeditions, a central store, medical facility, offices, recreational spaces, workshops and areas for plant. High thermal performance windows specified on the project have been provided by Aluprof. The MB-86 ST window and door system has been designed to offer outstanding insulation properties. Offered in three varieties, ST, SI and AERO the MB86 was the first ever aluminium system to employ silica aerogel, a nano-porous material that has a very high proportion of free void

volume compared to conventional solid materials. Aerogel’s high pore volume, low solid content, and its ‘torturous path amorphous structure’ offer very low values of thermal conductivity. Since setting up the Aluprof Office at the Business Design Centre in London, the company has rapidly grown their specification influence in the UK with their high-performance architectural aluminium systems. Helping school design reduce carbon emissions With heating being a school’s primary use of energy, leading independent building services specialist Gilberts is taking steps to help the educational estate optimise its carbon footprint.

he move coincides with updates to the required technical standards and performance criteria for schools’ mechanical services, within the Department for Education’s Facilities Output Specification(1). The updates are encouraging specifiers to consider utilisation of heat pumps as the most efficient way of warming, ventilating and cooling the building. When powered by electricity from a renewable source, with their high COP verses oil, gas or direct electrical options, heat pumps offer the school long-term benefits and lower energy bills. However, it is important to ensure the heat pumps are installed with support building services systems that can work efficiently with them, so the school has a healthy internal environment for the pupils and staff. Gilberts’ MFS hybrid ventilation units do just that.

Integrated into the heat pump system, Gilberts’ MFS can utilise the warmth brought into the school from the ground or air to maintain a comfortable internal environment in each individual classroom, year round, appropriately balancing warmth and ventilation as needed.

Typically, LTHW (low temperature hot water) is circulated around the school from system boilers at mean temperatures around 50-60°C. With heat pumps, the water is cooler at around 35°c for heating but there is also the option of 9°C for “free cooling”. Gilberts’ MFS has been designed such that these options can be used to heat the classroom during the cold weather or temper it during the warmer months. Gilberts’ MFS hybrid, stand-alone ventilation system is recognised as being fully compliant with Environmental Funding Agency, Facilities Output Specification and BB101 requirements for school ventilation. Strategically located at high level through the external façade, the unit efficiently ventilates each individual space with no need for ductwork, plant, fire dampers, associated penetrations into adjoining spaces (a growing consideration for schools to minimise Covid) and building work. The core MFS appliance provides natural ventilation and uniquely blends the incoming fresh air with the warmth from the exhaust air. MFS can also be configured to run on 100% fresh air, using the coil to temper the air to provide

Covid compliant ventilation without compromising the internal temperature. Just 2 Mistrale MFS128’s or 1 MFS256 single-sided units will ventilate a standard 32 person classroom, achieving the 8 litres/ sec/person fresh air required and within the particulant levels for Covid currently set by the Department of Education Building Bulletin (BB101) and PBSP guidelines. It brings compliant control over temperature, pollutants and CO2 levels and maintenance of a comfortable internal environment for occupants. There is no need for radiators nor all their associated ancillary capital

expenditure, installation, operating and maintenance cost. As the heat is supplied at high level, the risk of low surface temperature (LST) issues is also eliminated. As a solus ventilation unit, MFS costs as little as £5/classroom/ year(*) to operate. Using it as the means of classroom heating adds just £2.19/ classroom/year(*). Energy consumption and thus energy costs are reduced. Schools account for around 2% of UK greenhouse gas emissions, roughly the same as all the energy and transport emissions of Manchester, Newcastle and Bristol combined; this is equivalent to 15% of the country’s public sector emissions(2).

Energy is also a school’s second biggest expenditure (after salaries) according to the Institute of School Business Learning(3): improving energy efficiency helps deliver best value against budgetary considerations. What is a Heat Pump? It is a direct expansion cycle (DX) that comprises of a Compressor, an Evaporator a Condenser and an Expansion Device. It uses refrigerant as a media to transfer unwanted energy (heat) from inside to outside (cooling) or from outside to inside (heating). In the system there is a reversing valve that changes the evaporator to a condenser and a condenser to an evaporator (hence the reverse cycle term). Why refrigerant? Refrigerant is a chemical gas that changes phase from gas to liquid and visa versa. It is extremely energy efficient and can carry more the 50 times energy per weight than air and 10 times more than water. It boils at as low as -50°C (water +100°C) and condenses at as high as 140°C. These characteristic makes it suitable for most habitable areas of the world, smaller inter connecting pipes and compact and very cost effective. The refrigerant safety class for domestic use MUST be A1 class non-flammable. There are other classes A2, A2L flammables and can be explosive under pressure and A3 highly flammable and explosive. Classes are as defined by ISO817 & ASHRAE 34 standards The efficiency of cooling (EER) cycle or heating cycle (COP) can range anything between 250% (2.5/1) to 500% (5/1) (that is for every energy unit, say1 kW electricity consumed, up to 5 kW can be absorbed from inside (unwanted heat) to be rejected outside or absorbed from outside air or water or ground and transferred to inside to heat a house or domestic hot water). There are mainly Air to Air (most common and cost effective), Water to Air & Water to Water systems. Systems can be compact (all components in one box) or Single Splits One indoor and One outdoor or Multi Splits where multiple indoor units connected to One outdoor unit. The Indoor units can be a wall, floor, Ceiling or Ducted fan coils or a refrigerant to water heat exchanger to provide domestic hot water or medium temperature heating water for under floor heating or radiators. The interconnecting refrigeration pipe work would require specialist approved refrigeration engineers. There are no extra safety control systems (provided the refrigerant is A1 class non-flammable) and no chimneys, extra builder’s work or electrical supplies.

BVC Industrial Vacuum Cleaners for the Construction Industry Within the construction industry, from manufacturers of materials and components, through the distribution channels to the construction sites themselves, controlling the hazards caused by dust and debris is of paramount importance. The hazards include the harm that the dusts can do to the operatives, the dangers combustible dusts can present if they are allowed to accumulate and the physical hazards created by dust and debris in the working environment. Much of the focus of the Health & Safety Executive and the associated guidance and regulations is on the hazards of dust created locally to the process. For example, CIS36 – the HSE’s guidance notice on construction dust, focusses on M and H Class on-tool dust extraction when referring to vacuum cleaners. On-tool extraction equipment, whilst suitable for connection to individual pieces of equipment, is unsuited to volume collection and cleaning within the wider work area. Inevitably, in virtually every environment and work area where construction materials are manufactured, processed and used, there will be a requirement for cleaning up dust and debris. It is within the wider work area that the optimum solution for the application can usually be found within the BVC – British Vacuum Cleaners range of industrial machines. BVC was formed as a company in 1902; it was for many years the brand of specialised industrial vacuum cleaners alongside the domestic “Goblin” branded machines manufactured by the British Vacuum Cleaner and Engineering Co. Towards the latter end of the 20th century the domestic and industrial brands separated. BVC equipment is now manufactured by Quirepace Ltd in our Fareham factory.

BVC Industrial Vacuum Cleaners are intended as “tough machines for tough jobs”, and are ideally suited for all applications associated with the construction industry. The range of machines spans from 1kW units available in 110v and 230v single phase configurations to 15kW 3 phase equipment for the heaviest duty applications.

The smaller machines are available as M Class and H Class designated units for hazardous dusts. BS EN 60335 from which the classes of vacuum cleaners for hazardous dusts derive, is not applicable to large, heavyduty industrial vacuum cleaners, not least because the standard requires collection into disposable bags, which obviously becomes somewhat impractical for a hundred kilos plus of collected debris. At the larger end of the BVC range of equipment the Centurion Ti60 and Ti80 have 60 and 80 litre collection tanks but are also often used in combination with large capacity interceptors such as oil-drum heads for collection into steel drums, and interceptor skips; the

latter having capacities up to 1 tonne or more. These same machines can be supplied with the same grade of HEPA filtration as M and H Class machines and like most of the BVC range are also available as ATEX certified units for dust class 22 ATEX zones where explosive atmospheres, caused by flammable dusts, might occasionally occur. One of the challenges created by hazardous fine dusts that can easily become airborne (and hence must always be well controlled through cleanliness of the work environment), is the fact that these fine dusts do not instantly fall into the collection tank of vacuum cleaners and in fact get easily drawn directly on to the filters collecting on and “blinding” the filters

February 2022 fitted with Y piece inlets allowing two operatives simultaneously, or indeed, can be connected to small fixed-pipe installations where this is the most appropriate solution. Large fixed-pipe installations or Central Vacuum Cleaning (CVC) systems are also designed, manufactured and installed by Quirepace’s BVC division. This type of installation may use a 20-50kW exhauster plant combined with hoppers, various discharge mechanisms, and fixed pipe networks capable of servicing many operators simultaneously. Like all BVC equipment, CVC installations are available with ATEX ratings and with many different options. Within the construction industry CVC systems have been installed by Quirepace within, for example, cement works, minerals processing and gypsum manufacturing plants. A typical installation may have 30 hose connection points spread over several floors of a facility with collection rates around 1 tonne/hour or more. Quirepace provide a complete service for Central Vacuum Cleaning equipment from initial consultation by our specialist sales team, through design, manufacturing, installation, commissioning and after sales service. and hence decreasing the efficiency of the machine. One of the remedies to mitigate this problem is to ensure that equipment has big filter surface areas, thereby reducing the air-flow rate through the filter per filter area. Another remedy is to continually agitate the filter medium which helps to ensure that the collected material more readily falls away into the collection tank keeping the filter clear and operating efficiently. Machines in the BVC range including the Tower TS60, and Centurion Ti60 and Ti80 are available with the BVC “Clearflow” filter. This is a unique design which consists of many individual filter socks fitted over spring cores. As the machine operates both vibration and the pressure fluctuations cause the springs to agitate and this, combined with the very large surface area created by the Clearflow design helps to clear the filter ensure that filter blinding is minimised during operation. Manual agitators are also provided to assist filter shaking if required. It is important to match the Industrial Vacuum Cleaner unit itself and the tools and hoses used with it, to the materials to be cleaned and recovered. For

example, it would not be appropriate to choose the largest 15kW machine unless the airflow through the machine can be maintained at the high level required by the powerful vacuum exhauster to allow it to operate efficiently; too little airflow would cause the components to overheat. Similarly some products require aeration pickup tools to ensure that the product to be cleaned can be held in and pulled efficiently through the airstream without blocking the hose. Quirepace’s specialist sales team will evaluate the application and advise the most appropriate hose sizes, machine ratings and tools which are best suited for the particular application. In fact Quirepace offer a range of filter mediums, hose sizes and lengths and tools, and evaluating and advising the correct combination is one of the principal objectives of any demonstration carried out by the Quirepace sales team. For ATEX environments hoses and tools will be manufactured from conductive materials to prevent static discharges. How construction firms can combat fake ID with digital identity checks Tony Machin, CEO of TrustID, discusses how construction firms can help their subcontractors detect illegal workers and protect their reputations.

Now that the deadline for workers to apply for the EU Settlement Scheme has officially passed, UK construction firms have been warned to expect a rise in the number of illegal documents being presented as evidence of right to work in the UK. 22

ost large construction firms rely on subcontractors and, whilst they are not directly responsible for their Right to Work (RtW) checks, that doesn’t mean they have no cause for concern. Though constructors may not shoulder the financial burden of penalties, they might well suffer reputational damage and disruption if they are found to have illegal workers employed on their projects. In a competitive environment, your reputation can make or break a deal – especially as developers are becoming increasingly concerned about the ESG credentials of suppliers. For sensitive projects – such as public sector buildings – there is an even greater need to demonstrate compliance with illegal working checks. To mitigate the threat to their reputation, main contractors must therefore ensure that all staff accessing a site, including subcontractors, are robustly checked. However, monitoring this can be particularly challenging for project managers, if they are dealing with hundreds of staff at any one time or have a high turnover rate. Project managers also often need to get people on site quickly, and lengthy checks can cause delays. Processing RtW checks correctly can also be resource- and skills-intensive – and some subcontractors may be unwilling to shoulder the costs. Main contractors therefore need to be able to recommend a fast, reliable, and affordable way to support their subcontractors’ RtW checks.

How to solve the problem UK construction specialists are increasingly keen to promote and support the highest levels of compliance among their supply chain and network of subcontractors. They recognise the risk that illegal working presents to both their business and to their supply chain, including the threat of modern slavery, as well as potential damage to their brand and reputation, which could exclude them from future opportunities, particularly in the public sector.

February 2022 One such way to drive compliance is by promoting the use of digital identity checks, and forwardthinking contractors are increasingly encouraging their strategic partners to deploy a reputable identity checking service. Such services support fast, compliant, straightforward Right to Work checks, confirm the authenticity of identity documents and build a higher level of protection against illegal working. A main contractor can then request to see proof of checks as sub-contracted workers arrive on site.

What is the real risk? At TrustID, we keep a record of the number of fake documents submitted to our identity checking service. When we recently assessed the digital RtW checks made by one construction firm’s supply chain partners, we found that 11% of submissions would not have been accepted as evidence in a Home Office audit. Examples included submissions with ineligible or incomplete documentation, and even one fake British passport. At another major construction project, to refurbish a London shopping centre, all subcontractors were required to deploy TrustID digital identity checks to gain access to the site. In one year, we flagged 15 fake documents in the supply chain, which could have led to civil penalties of up to £300,000. The percentages of different document types identified almost mirrored the overall picture in construction (the most common being passport and ID cards) – adding supporting evidence to the effectiveness of the checks.

How to choose a digital RtW service Look for a digital service that is cloud-based, so that you can access it online from any connected device.

If your requirements are likely to vary from job to job, look for a RtW service that offers a pay-per-check basis, so that you don’t have to pay for more than you need. In terms of functionality, think about how you want receive documents to the digital service for verification. Some services enable employees to upload images of their identity documents themselves. Your service provider should then be able to quickly confirm document validity and provide an electronic report – sometimes within minutes. Look for a service that is backed by a SLA that meets your business needs. With the right provider, workers should be able to arrive on site the day after verification (or even the same day) with proof of Right to Work in the UK.

Should your business promote digital RtW checks? Given the ongoing risk of identity fraud and potential tough penalties, there is a clear need for constructors to protect their sites from illegal workers, whether they are directly employed or operating through subcontractors. As digital checks are cost effective and quick to complete, they overcome the main objections that subcontractors may have to performing enhanced identity checks on staff. Indeed, many subcontractors introduce digital ID checks to meet compliance requirements for one project, then continue to run them voluntarily as they see the benefits. Because digital identity checks are proven to be reliable, they bring valued peace of mind. The answer is clear: if you want to protect your construction firm against the reputational loss, fraud risk, potential disruption to your site and significant fines that illegal documents can cause, digital identity and Right to Work checks are the foundation.

Zentia ceilings rise to the challenge in Plymouth Sloping ceilings at a Plymouth primary school feature Zentia products. A new school for a new community in Plymouth has relied on ceiling solutions by leading UK manufacturer Zentia for delivering both form and function. Some 1,200m2 of Zentia’s Perla OP 0.95 Tegular 600mm x 600mm tiles, which were the first mineral tile in the world to win Cradle to Cradle status, feature in the classrooms, offices, stores and communal areas at state-of-the-art Morley Meadows primary school. Part of Persimmon Homes’ Saltram Meadows development in Plymstock, the £5.8 million primary school also features Zentia’s 100% humidity resistant Hydroboard 600mm x 600mm tiles with Prelude 24 non-corrosive grid in the kitchen, showers, toilets and changing areas. Designed by Stride Treglown architects, and delivered by main contractor Halsall Construction, the two-form entry school accommodates 420 pupils, with part of it able to be cordoned off so it can be used by other community groups out of hours. Specialist sub-contractor Vizion Interiors had a team of up to 10 on site for eight months, installing a total of 1,650m2 of the Zentia products on ceilings, that in the main part, unusually, sloped to degrees of 35® to mimic the sloping roof.

The grid coped with the design magnificently and the client and local authority have all commented very positively.” He added: “This project was challenging due to the design and numerous clashes on site with other trades. Setting out was laborious as all the classrooms had to follow the raking roof pitch but in the end it was effective. Adam Church, director in charge at Persimmon Homes Cornwall, said: “Saltram Meadow is a major development which has already rejuvenated the area. As well as delivering much-needed homes, we are committed to providing the infrastructure essential for building a community for new residents and a key part of that is the school. Utility strikes and use of trenchless technology – using the bore hole created by removing the old pipe to install a replacement pipe Simon Drain – CEO, Kobus Utility strikes represent an ever-present threat to human life, yet, thousands occur each year in the UK, exposing workers to risks including electrocution and explosion. The issue is costly and disruptive as well as dangerous: with millions being subsequently spent rectifying the damage caused by ill-judged digging, not taking into account the environmental impact and at the very least, service delays to end customers. There are over 12,000 works taking place every day across the UK, it is critical that we learn from near misses and lower consequence strikes to minimise the risk that workers are facing on a daily basis. The utility networks that run over our heads and below our feet extend to over 1.5 million km and are fundamental to daily life. The Utility Strikes Damages Report, published by Utility Strike Avoidance Group (ASAG) found that over 2500 utility strikes took place across the UK in 2019, and that there is a necessary need for more robust survey practices to be put into place, and improved execution of works. One organisation that exists to reduce this risk is Kobus which offers a trenchless technique for water and gas service pipe replacement. Kobus technology uses the pathway of the existing service pipe thereby greatly minimises the risk of striking another utility, despite it being a trenchless method. If a pipe already exists, Kobus can use the bore hole created to install a new pipe as the old piping is removed, with a significantly less risk of damaging another utility. Many leading global water companies and contractors have fully invested in Kobus technology, including Wessex Water and international operators in the US, Poland, and the Netherlands, after recognising the financial and safety benefits. So, just how big an issue are pipe and cable strikes?

The underground utility infrastructure in the UK is vast and congested. Over four million excavations take place each year in Britain, and a 2017 industry

survey shows that 44% of these took place with out a detailed examination for existing underground assets. With a lax approach being taken, the chances of strikes rise astronomically. Taking a five-year period between 2013 and 2017 the rate of strikes rose by 668% from 162 to 1,244. Providing a headache for workers on the ground and local government officials responsible for the pipes and cables. Underground strikes between July and September last year jumped by a further 20% compared to 2019 with 2020 Q3 at 46% higher than the previous quarter. The reason behind the upwards trend is hard to uncover. A survey released by the Energy Networks Association shows 93% of workers believe they operate safely whilst simultaneously 31% revealed they did not always check for underground cables before commencing the excavation. Data from the Utility Strike Avoidance Group shows most strikes are caused by excavating machines. Furthermore, handheld tools such as pneumatic drills, shovels and crowbars also expose workers to avoidable danger. There is an inherent risk involved with all pipes and cables. Whether they exist to distribute gas, electricity, water, cable TV, or sewage waste. Add individual property service lines to the mix and you are suddenly standing atop a variety of hazards which, thanks to oft times inaccurate historical maps can leave you in the dark. Where does the solution lie? The ability to simultaneously pull decommissioned piping from the ground whilst installing new service pipes using the same bore path sounds like a dream. This is precisely what is on offer with Kobus’ Pipe Puller. With the added mobility and efficiency of the pipe puller tool, work is faster and better for the environment as

old piping are removed from the ground avoiding a potential long-term degradation underground and added congestion. It is a trenchless, low-risk alternative that avoids much of the risks previously faced. Community pressure for a more effective solution is just as strong as the need for the industry to innovate from within. Trenchless technologies are already a dominant feature of utility infrastructure maintenance. Needing just two small excavations disruption is minimised, roads can remain open and people are free to carry on with their lives. On the industry side, Kobus is playing its part in driving towards Ofwat target of reducing leakage by 16% in this AMP period. Particularly because the pipe puller machinery removes rather than repairs which the industry is now embracing as the way to go. Utility strikes are avoidable, preoperation mapping of existing utilities is the first step to a safer future, and a move away from moling towards the simultaneous pulling and laying of new pipes is the next step towards a future without strikes altogether.

Gilberts helps create the right ambience at the Metquarter Whether wanting American chicken and burgers to the delicacy of Asian cuisine, visitors to Liverpool’s newest and biggest food hall- GPO at Liverpool’s Metquarterwill be assured of a great atmosphere, thanks to the local air movement specialist with an international reputation, Gilberts. Double deflection grilles from the Blackpool-based ventilation manufacturer have been fixed into the distinctive oval ducting running the length of the main food hall in the Metquarter. The grilles ensure a consistent flow of fresh air without draughts nor transfer of aromas from one zone to another from the 12 independent kitchens in the converted former General Post Office. The strategy has been designed and installed by JD Engineering M&E contractor to the brief from development management company Queensberry and restauranteurs The Milestone Group. The open plan 11,000 sq ft food hall with exposed building services limited available space into which to install the ventilation to ensure compliance with the diverse mix of needs.To balance ventilation, extraction and odour control requirements within the space constraints, JD Engineering proposed flat oval ducting to run the length of the retail area, with Gilberts GHV double deflection grilles strategically positioned along the sides. Adjustable blade dampers, fixed horizontally to the front and vertically to the rear of the grilles circulate the conditioned air. The design delivers 70% free ventilation area, deflecting incoming air vertically and horizontally to optimise rapid mixing and entrainment without draughts. The separate dishwash area is addressed via Gilberts GECA removeable core

eggcrate grille. The WCs are served by Gilberts’ GX extract valves specifically designed for removing stale air from washrooms. Explained a spokesperson for JD Engineering, “Having 12 kitchens on one area, all providing very different styles of cuisine, was a challenge for the ventilation, to ensure the dining experience was pleasurable and not diluted by an influx of potentially conflicting aromas from other areas. The constraint in ceiling height added a further dimension to address. Gilberts’ grilles matched the requirements in terms of the requisite throw and air distribution we needed, and provided the quality and appearance requirements.” Matt Bigland, Founder and Director at The Milestone Group, added, “GPO will be a hub for Liverpool’s emerging food scene and will showcase the best in up-andcoming food and drink talent in the heart of Liverpool. CPA Installs Fall Protection at Aerospace Facility Casper, Phillips & Associates Inc. (CPA) has designed and installed a bespoke fall protection system for a large commercial airplane supplier.

was contracted to integrate it with 67 separate bridge cranes that vary in capacity from 34 tons to 40 tons and cover three million square feet. The galvanized chain-link (ASTM A392-07) installation allows crane operators and maintenance personnel to transition from a 90-ft.-high catwalk to crane bridge egress platforms without wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), which involved the timeconsuming process of attaching and disconnecting harnesses etc. Overall dimensions of the frames are 10 ft. 5 in. by 35 ft. 1 in.; the bridge girders are 12 ft. on center; and the chain link area is 7 ft. 6 in by 9 ft. 2 in. Richard Phillips, mechanical engineer at CPA, said: “It was a

voluntary upgrade. The bridge egress platforms were not previously equipped with fall protection. It’s not that the [safety] codes changed; the owner wanted to no longer require that workers be tied off. Maintenance personnel work at height to perform routine upkeep, such as greasing bearings, changing gearbox oil, and replacing the hoist wire rope. Crane operators access the bridges via catwalks and only use the egress platforms if the bridge or cab breaks down—or if there is an emergency.” Phillips explained that the crane bridge spans vary between 100 ft. and 150 ft. Lift heights are all approximately 67 ft., he added. A low-weight solution was needed to not structurally impact the bridge and rail system. The CPA net frames offer the added benefit of allowing

workers to see through them. A solid platform would have also been considered a working surface, which would have still required additional guarded edges for fall protection. The system was tested by dropping a 400-lb. sand bag from a height of 55 in. The factory was divided into two halves—the old and new part of the factory. The new area had a frame system that slipped in around the existing egress platforms, while the older half required the existing egress platforms to be removed and new platforms integrated into the net frame. The old half had much shorter bridge bumpers and the net frame was designed to overlap from an adjacent bridge so the bridges could still go bumperto-bumper. No two net frames

February 2022 across the factory were the same because conduit, junction boxes, lacing, and as-built egress locations varied from one bridge to another. The chain link to frame interface was consistent for all net frames.

3D scanning technology Andrew Hanek, a civil engineer at CPA, said: “The project was unique because of the time constraints required to install the frame and no two bridges were alike. They all appear alike at first sight, but the location and orientation of limit switches etc. always changed. As-built conditions of things like the ladder and ladder cage changed or had angles mounted backwards. Space limitations were also a huge concern since the bridges still had to go bumper-to-bumper for picks and we had minimal clearance vertically with the roof truss system.” Many of these differences were either inadequately documented or not documented at all. CPA decided that the best path forward was to leverage handheld 3D scanning technology and scan all the cranes for these minor differences. CPA created a primary design that could be slightly modified to fit each crane without any costly interferences. As Phillips said, “A minute in the shop is worth five

minutes in the field so it was very important that everything dropped in and fit to minimize downtime.”

The top of the platforms did not have a lot of unique features so stitching the point clouds across the platform did not give good results. CPA decided to reference the point clouds to the bridge girder and assume that the 12-ft. on center spacing was precise. This

Installing the bespoke fall protection system “The first few bridges were a learning curve,” Hanek acknowledged, “But the installation crew eventually got it down to the entire process for a single bridge being performed in a 12-hour window. Net frames were fabricated and staged ahead of time so they could be hoisted into place and installed. If needed, relocation of electrical conduit and junction boxes was performed prior to the frame installation. The short install time was a huge success since production was not able to lose bridges for days at a time. All work was performed between shifts and pick moves while the factory remained at full production. Kier appointed to start construction of 142 new affordable homes at Macfarlane Place, Television Centre in March 2022 Stanhope, Mitsui Fudosan and AIMCo, on behalf of certain of its clients, (the joint venture “JV”) announce today that they have awarded to Kier the contract for the construction of 142 new affordable homes for Peabody in two new buildings called Macfarlane Place at Television Centre, London, W12. Construction of Macfarlane Place will commence in March 2022 with delivery expected in early 2024. The buildings form part of the wider Television Centre development which will eventually have c 950 homes in total. Stanhope is the development manager for Television Centre and Cantillon was the demolition contractor for the multistorey car park.

Wood Lane. Peabody will be responsible for managing the homes when completed. The JV is working closely with Transport for London, who own the adjacent arches below the elevated Hammersmith & City line, to help improve the wider area for the local community.

Meet the Expert: Oliver Lawton and Andrew Surtees, Co-Founders of the Copper Sustainability Partnership (CuSP) What’s the background to CuSP? How did it come about and what do you do? AS: The initial idea to set up CuSP came about following the closure of a similar organisation in the UK called the Copper Development Association. The closure left the UK copper industry without a voice for its products, so we set up CuSP to promote copper and build on the growing demand to use more sustainable products in the construction industry. OL: The partnership’s mission emerged from the growing demand for sustainability and longevity we’ve seen in the construction and plumbing industries. We aim to challenge, educate, and inform the industry and the public on how copper plays a vital part in a more sustainable future. We’re passionate about telling the story of copper and standing up to the inaccuracies commonly seen in the plastics greenwash.

What would you say are the top three benefits of using copper in the construction industry? AS: There are many benefits to using copper in the construction industry, but I would say the top three advantages are its longevity, its proven performance, and how fit for purpose it is. For example, if installed with care, copper pipes in homes can outlast the life of your home as copper retains its properties for hundreds of years – it’s one of the construction materials that truly stands the test of time.

Copper is extremely fit for purpose - because of its versatility, it can be used across utilities such as water, heating, gas, air conditioning, and even electrical applications. It also has an ability to withstand extreme temperatures, pressures and exposure to UV and oxygen, so can be used for a range of purposes and across a multitude of environments, without its integrity being altered. OL: I would say that perhaps the greatest benefit of using copper in the construction industry is its sustainability. As a material, it is infinitely recyclable and has the unique ability to be safely recycled over and over without any loss in performance or properties. We are in a great position in the UK as we have a well-established end-to-end recycling and scrap industry, encouraging a strong circular economy and retention of the material’s value after use. For example, a three-metre length of scrap copper tube can be remanufactured into a brand new three-metre length of tube, without loss, and a production emitting 85% less carbon compared to the production of tube from mined copper. Copper really does last forever!

Is copper suitable for use in both commercial and residential buildings? AS: Absolutely, copper is the professional choice for all kinds of construction projects, whether commercial or residential. One reason for this is because of copper’s safety credentials for use in buildings, especially compared to alternative materials such as plastic. Copper is known for its thermal resilience and has the ability to withstand fluctuating temperatures. In fact, its incredibly high melting point means copper pipes won’t melt, burn, or give off toxic fumes in a building fire. Many plastics are intumescent materials, meaning that they grow in size in the event of fire, creating extreme fire hazards because of how they allow fires to spread. With this in mind, the safety of both homes and commercial spaces is improved by using copper pipes. OL: As well as homes and offices, copper is also commonly used in hospital and healthcare environments because of its resilience and natural anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties. Copper tubing and copper surfaces are used to reduce the risk of infection and spread of bacteria and research shows that, when copper alloys are used, infection rates from contaminated surfaces fall by 58%. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the UK’s Nightingale hospitals used medical

copper to prevent contamination and bacterial growth and copper has been recognised by the Environmental Protection Agency as being able to kill 99.9% of bacteria that cause hospital-acquired infections within just two hours. As you can see, copper plays a vital role in healthcare settings as well.

What other construction materials does copper work well with? AS: Copper can be used with all types of plumbing and heating products – it is versatile and can be adapted to fit most other associated products. OL: With the sustainability agenda becoming increasingly important in the construction industry, I think one of the areas where we’ll see copper get more actively involved is sustainable heating, particularly heat pumps. Many heat pumps rely on copper pipes in order to improve efficiency, as copper is a superior conductor of heat and can withstand large variations in temperature, without expansion or contraction issues. Water safety must also be considered when installing heat pumps as they operate at lower temperatures than gas boilers, so stored water may only be heated to around 50 degrees Celsius. This is often fine for household use but does pose the risk of Legionella build-up. Using copper pipe mitigates the risk of Legionella build-up due to its natural anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties.

Following COP26, how can construction professionals work to improve the sustainability of the industry? AS: I think the main thing that construction professionals need to focus on is making sure they use products made from recycled materials that will continue to be recycled at the end of their life. They should always ensure the circular economy is at the forefront of their decision making – we need to challenge norms, stand up against inaccuracies, and break the mould in order to achieve greater environmental thinking throughout the industry.

Hopefully, with the introduction of the Plastic Tax, construction professionals will turn towards more sustainable materials and this figure will begin to decrease.

What are your ambitions for CuSP in 2022? AS: In 2022, we’ll be working to build on the great start we’ve made with CuSP, encouraging conversations surrounding recyclability and engaging with professionals to recommend and support them to use the most environmentally friendly products. Copper is one of the most important and versatile metals, so we need to spread the word and boost its use at the expense of more environmentally damaging materials. OL: I think one of our biggest ambitions will be to continue supporting the UK copper industry to constantly look at ways to remove plastic from its production and distribution chain. For example, many companies in the copper industry use single-use polyester slings to carry tube bundles internally and when loading and unloading copper tube from lorries. Currently, as an industry we are using approximately 500,000 plastic slings a year, which are either burnt or sent to landfill, so there is a challenge for every company and individual to step up and do their part. Collectively, we can make a difference before nature takes this choice from us.

Newton Waterproofing delivers comprehensive gas protection solution When it comes to the challenge of waterproofing and gas proofing a below-ground structure, Newton Waterproofing Systems, the UK’s leading independent designers and suppliers of guaranteed waterproofing systems, stock a range of products that combine effective waterproofing and gas protection. Section 4 of the British Standard for Waterproofing, BS 8102:2009 states that “it is essential for the success of any project involving below ground structures that strategies for dealing with groundwater, soil gases and contaminants are considered”, and consequently, Newton Waterproofing will always recommend waterproofing products that also have third-party tested gas resistance.

Combining Waterproofing and Gas Protection Below Ground Newton has a range of products that meet the necessary standards for use as protection against belowground gases. These include the third-party certified HydroBond 403 Plus GB, which meets with Annex C and section 7.2.4 including table 7 of British Standard 8485 (the Code of Practice for the Design of Protective Measures for Methane and Carbon

Dioxide Ground Gases for New Buildings) and provides resistance to methane, carbon dioxide and hydrocarbons. This is in addition to radon in accordance with BRE211 (2015). Excellent products must always be paired with sensible design however, and, as with waterproofing best practice, the most effective combined gas and waterproofing designs combine multiple forms of protection, and always include a Type C cavity drain membrane system. When either vented to external air or positively pressurised the Newton CDM system using the 508R membranes can also contribute to gas resistant designs. These include Protech GM Super, a high-performance reinforced gas barrier that incorporates an aluminium foil layer for maximum protection against ground-borne gases. The membrane is extremely robust and flexible, and is therefore easy to install on site, while also providing protection from damp when placed below the slab, meaning there is no need for a separate DPM. Newton also supplies Protech VOC Flex, a high-performance, six-layer flexible reinforced VOC gas barrier suitable for use on brownfield sites that require protection from dangerous contaminants such as hydrocarbons. Protech VOC Flex has also been developed to ease installation on site due to the flexibility of the membrane, and is also suitable as a high-performance damp proof membrane. Both Protech GM Super and Protech VOC Flex have been BBA certified and protect against radon, methane and carbon dioxide. For 3 days, the 1,481 companies and brands exhibiting and the professional visitors met up with pleasure to chat and do business together.

THE FRENCH MARKET IS VERY BUOYANT Paysalia benefitted from the buoyancy of the gardening and landscaping market in France. In fact, the number of French visitors to the show was up 3.5% in 2021, reflecting this very high growth, particularly in the private home market with record growth up 17.5% in the first half of 2021, very welcome after the drop in 2020.

For three days Paysalia promoted my company’s national and even international brand awareness. In the same place, at the same time, we talked directly to the end users of our products as well as specifiers, architects and their clients. This unique opportunity is given to us in the Auvergne-Rhone-Alps region – the region where we do the most business.

Yet again this year Paysalia, the benchmark trade show for the sector, targeted professionals designing, installing and maintaining private and public gardens and green spaces. Paysalia is the only Show in Europe to propose this coverage with an offer renewed each time (30% of first-time exhibitors in 2021) and even more (+25%) exhibitors from outside France. Paysalia 2021 reasserted its main objective - to assist all Gardening and Landscaping sector professionals in finding solutions to meet the new challenges and changes with which they are confronted - climate change through the Biodiversity & Environment Village and the Green City Day on Thursday, December 2nd, sector attractiveness and new team skill requirements with the Jobs and Training Employment Village and the new markets to conquer (urban agriculture, building vegetalisation …) - the focus of the conferences in the Paysalia Forums. Over and above the challenges facing the sector, Paysalia addresses the changes in our society by convincing landscape designers, public authorities, innovative businesses as well architects and manufacturers to share the same ambition: i.e. to participate in ecological transition and build a world in closer harmony with nature so we can all live better together today - and tomorrow.

SHOWS OPEN TO STUDENTS IN THE SECTORS CONCERNED businesses and a host of opportunities in natural stone trades, getting employers and students together is essential for the future of these sectors. During this edition partnerships were also consolidated with several Apprentice (CFA) training centres and for the first time Student Juries were formed to judge the Carré des Jardiniers and Paysalia Innovations Awards contests, which awarded the “student’s favourite” prizes.

Paysalia and Rocalia always host nearly 1,500 landscaping and natural stone students led by trainers and teachers. They were helped to prepare their entry into the working world by meeting suppliers and discovering the latest trends. They also participated in workshops and conferences at the Paysalia Jobs and Training Village and the Rocalia Trades and Skills area. With over 6,000 job vacancies in landscaping

For our business, we try to use natural stones from the area where we work to avoid longdistance transport to limit our carbon impact and to coordinate our works with the architecture of our heritage buildings and obtain a coherent landscape in this way.

The synergy developed since 2017 between Paysalia and Rocalia made it possible again this year to propose a true added-value in both the contents of the Show and the complementarity of the sets of themes treated to all the professional buyers and specifiers present. A unique conjunction of minerals and plants which attracted 29,000 visitors (construction and outdoor installation professionals, public authorities, private developers and specifiers). The Show sponsors actively organised many much appreciated events and demonstrations for the visitors. Major challenges for the sector highlighted at Rocalia 2021 included the environmentally-friendly properties of natural stone, its use in restoring heritage buildings, the use of digital technology and training in the Jobs and Skills Space and “On the way to THE WorldSkills trades competition.

With the acquisition of Cleanroom Solutions and the introduction of the new division Isoblok, three become five. The existing divisions include Guardtech Cleanrooms, which will now cater specifically for the modular cleanroom market. CleanCube Mobile Cleanrooms will continue to provide portable solutions for businesses all over the world, while Isopod Rapid Cleanrooms will offer a quicker, more flexible and cost-effective alternative for clients – standardised models made from stock held by Guardtech, available for ‘flat-pack’ delivery and with the option for self-assembly installation. Cleanroom Solutions, the Sussex-based firm with a rich history in high-quality controlled environment design & build services, will remain a specialist for our larger turnkey construction projects. The ‘Fit and Forget’ sanitizer system

After 18 months during which hand hygiene was thrust into the spotlight like never before, SEKO’s groundbreaking DispenserONE® sanitizer system – purpose-designed in response to coronavirus – has transformed the way building managers deliver hand hygiene. But disposable and conventional light-duty sanitizer systems have been on the market for decades, so why the need to replace them? Such systems were adequate in the pre-COVID world, with their basic pump mechanism and low capacity capable of meeting low demand which was limited to hospitals, doctors’ surgeries and other healthcare sites. However, when COVID arrived and the need for hand sanitizer systems increased, these light-duty devices were expected to deal with constant, widespread use despite their limitations. The sight of a pelican pump, usually placed on a countertop or small table at a building entrance, has become common during the pandemic as managers attempt to deliver COVID-secure arrangements. As well as being unhygienic due to their manual operation, pump-action devices are messy, unsightly and unsafe as they leak and leave sanitizer dripping onto the surface and floor where they may create a slip hazard. An alternative to disposable dispensers are lightduty refillable systems mounted to walls and stands, which also splash and leak due to their primitive pump design. These units require regular repair and, ultimately, replacement after around six months on average. For building operators, this results in constant cleaning, refilling, repairing and replacement of dispensers – increasing staff workload and incurring hidden costs. From these limitations, the DispenserONE® range was born, as the SEKO R&D team worked to create a series of “fit and forget” systems to provide hassle-free, yet highly-effective infection control in any building. Built around an ultra-reliable motor-driven pump, DispenserONE® provides a consistently smooth, soft flow of sanitizer and because residual product remains within the mechanism once dosing is completed, the system is completely leak-free.
