HYDROGEN HEATING FROM RINNAI

Chris Goggin maps out his company’s view and adaption to the changing marketplace in the heating and hot water arena on the road to NetZero

Hydrogen Heating From Rinnai ecarbonisation and NetZero ambitions are prominent issues in global political agendas, forcing debate and discussion that focuses on potential future energy resources. Throughout these dialogues, hydrogen has been identified as a potential energy source for the global mass market.

The applications for hydrogen are many: industrial process, vehicles and building stock are key areas for deployment. A key reason in hydrogen’s identification as a mass market energy solution focuses on hydrogen’s clean content. Hydrogen is environmentally benign and therefore releases no CO₂ emissions. Decarbonizing the industrial sector is vital in cutting heavy emission releases. This includes the steel and chemical industries, both of which are responsible for large CO₂ emissions. The traffic sector believes hydrogen can deliver reduced emissions whilst powering long haul vehicles and local public transport

– note the recent London buses example. Hydrogen is also likely to be integral in domestic energy provision. Future energy mixes of green, cleaner gasses containing hydrogen blends are considered viable replacements of fossil fuels. By 2030 the UK plans to construct ‘hydrogen clusters’ introducing numerous avenues for hydrogen deployment, transfer and consumption to be made possible. The construction of hydrogen clusters will supply local residential and commercial buildings with locally sourced hydrogen. The Hynet Northwest programme has made considerable advancements in this area. One consideration is to link these clusters to the central transmission network to supply the whole of the UK.

Elsewhere away from the UK, there has been development of a comprehensive hydrogen strategy aiming to create a carbon neutral Europe. To further the development of carbon neutrality across Europe, the ‘European Clean Hydrogen Alliance’ an organization comprised of policy makers along the entire hydrogen value chain has been founded. This alliance concentrates on providing viable technologies, investment opportunities and political advice which aims to form political decision making on cleaner energies. Germany has advanced preparations towards a hydrogen economy with a detailed national hydrogen strategy set up in 2020. The Netherlands, France, Spain, Portugal and Norway have also developed their respective national hydrogen strategies. UK recognition of a hydrogen economy is also advanced and a national hydrogen strategy is set to be released soon. As a result, appliance manufacturers are preparing to adapt their products to accept cleaner gasses. To be prepared for a changing technological horizon, Rinnai is assisting future standards for both blends and 100% hydrogen. Hydrogen undoubtedly maintains the potential to be a cornerstone of the European energy transition. For hydrogen to become Europe’s fuel of choice, hydrogen must be produced CO₂-free and based on renewable energies, as so called “green” hydrogen. To date, no large quantities of green hydrogen have been produced, limiting hydrogen’s mass market potential. Production capacities must be created, as well as pipeline and distribution networks; transport and storage facilities. In addition, uniform technical standards remain to be defined. At present there are

no harmonised standards for the percentage of hydrogen that may be added to existing gas grids. The percentage varies between zero and ten percent across European countries. European harmonisation is a long-term undertaking. There are two issues which demand attention within the heating market. The first issue which requires research and data gathering centres on the proposed dispersal of a 20% hydrogen mixture into the national gas grid. The second point of focus is the development of hydrogen as a CO₂free fuel by 2030 - 2050. Additional tests to collect insights into future hydrogen gas blending rates are being carried out by gas utility companies in the UK, Germany and The Netherlands. In anticipation of a future transition to hydrogen, Rinnai’s commercial range of water heaters have undertaken and passed a series of rigorous verification tests that demonstrate their ability to accept hydrogen fuel gas blends of 30%. Rinnai is also positioning future products to receive CO₂-free pure hydrogen. Testing has begun on Rinnai’s Next-gen 100% hydrogen gas ready appliances. Pete Seddon, Technical team leader at Rinnai UK explains further: “The specification of hydrogen differs from natural gas, meaning that flame sensing devices will need modification, along

with some other components. The temperature within the appliance is very similar however, meaning that durability and reliability won’t change. Other positive elements associated with hydrogen within appliance combustion is that the heaters can be constructed in such a way that they are the same size as natural gas variants, simplifying appliance replacement and maintaining continuity. The Wobbe index for methane and hydrogen is also very similar, whilst the efficiency of the appliances is also like that of natural gas condensing variants.” The UK hydrogen strategy will be released alongside the Heat in Buildings strategy, which is expected to mandate hydrogen ready equipment. The growth of UK hydrogen clusters continues at pace and hydrogen blending is expected in the short term. Rinnai is well placed to deal with any current and future heating requirements and endeavours to support customers and partners throughout Rinnai’s future hydrogen decarbonisation pathway. Twinned Therm’s Facade Cavity and Aperture Protection System (FCAPS) Encouraging news for the occupants of ALL ‘at risk’ properties There have been many examples of total loss fires in the UK attributed to the ingress of smoke, heat and flames into buildings’ cavities. They vary from residential, commercial and industrial buildings, old and new, and the lack of robust protection of these cavities has led to the total loss of the buildings and, in some cases, fatalities.

These losses are avoidable After recent events there has been a lot of focus on High Rise Residential Buildings (HRRB’s), yet combustible materials feature in all building envelopes for consideration when it comes to fire safety. The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) acknowledges the risk to life in HRRBs is low; last year 91% of all residential fires were in houses, bungalows, converted or low rise flats and only 9% in blocks of flats of four storeys or more. MHCLG, acting on advice from an independent expert group, recommends a more proportionate and evidence-based approach to fire safety. The removal of the requirement for EWS-1 forms for buildings less than 18 metres should free leaseholders from cost and delay and restore balance to the housing market, helping flat owners to buy, sell or re-mortgage their homes. The Twinned Therm Facade Cavity and Aperture Protection System (FCAPS) is a robust, physical installation that provides this proportionate defence to all buildings and is a cost-effective alternative to other routes aimed at securing properties from the risk of fire.

FCAPS derived from an industrial smoke, heat and fall protection roof light where the insulation in the sandwich panel required protection from the exhausting smoke and heat. With a tested and certified A2-S1-D0 level of integrity, the FCAPS provides a cavity barrier to prevent the spread of the fire through the building. Furthermore the FCAPS will protect the cavities between a building’s outer wall and any rain screen cladding and has been independently tested and proven to do so. The system has the fluidity to protect any building envelope and is bespoke in both design and performance. Similarly they are equally as effective with door and window apertures as they are with flue or air vents. Furthermore their protective qualities allow buildings to be insured, another real solution in the marketplace today giving leaseholders some more encouraging news. Magply A1 Boards selected for fit out of London apartments One of the UK’s premier housebuilders has switched to specifying Magply boards as part of the wall construction, within the exterior elevations for an apartment development in a prime West London location, chosen in place of the plywood alternative because of the MgO boards’ outstanding physical characteristics and other practical benefits. oyal Warwick Square is a development by St. Edward – a joint venture company owned by M&G Investments and Berkeley. The scheme is part of the Warwick Road Masterplan that is providing a thousand new residences, a new school and landscaped spaces across seven acres of Zone 1 land in the Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

With work near to completion, Watford based PIB Contractors has been installing the Magply boards, supplied through MP Moran of Watford as ‘pattresses’ or backing blocks for fixings, within the light gauge steel wall panels. The pattresses are sized and positioned in line with a

pre-designed layout: facilitating the hanging of fixtures and fittings like shelves, radiators and kitchen units. St. Edward is amongst a growing number of sector specialists turning to IPP Ltd. and its Magply range where high performance panel products are required to meet specific technical challenges. In the case of Royal Warwick Square, a member of the project team contacted IPP Ltd. during the early design stages, leading to the Sales Manager for Magply delivering a full technical briefing on the versatile product, which has found many similar applications, particularly in Ireland and on student accommodation buildings across the UK.

Running-in your new home Practical advice for homeowners moving during Covid f you are moving into a newly built home, it’s important that your home can ‘settle’ – just like you, particularly in these uncertain times.

Giles Willson, Standards and Policy Manager at NHBC, the UK’s leading warranty and insurance provider for new build homes, said that there are a number of simple steps to take to help you ‘run in’ your new home. “Easy day to day measures can prevent or limit problems occurring, with the three key factors of moisture, condensation and shrinkage being the main causes of potential damage at any time of the year,” he said. “With UK mortgage approvals rising to their highest level in more than 10 years*, partly driven by buyers reassessing their living situation during the pandemic, it is clear that many tens of thousands of people have been busy and making the move during lockdown.” It is common that during construction, the materials used to build your home will have absorbed water. Although it is something you won’t notice, it’s important that this moisture evaporates slowly and be ventilated away. Decelerating the drying out process reduces the visible

effects of shrinkage, by letting things take their natural course. Stop moisture spreading: Extractor fans and cooker hoods, where fitted, should be used whenever water vapour is being produced, such as when cooking, washing clothes and showering. Also ensure that windows are opened regularly to allow excess moisture to escape. Keep a constant temperature to limit cracking: Try to keep an even temperature in the house so that the structure warms up and dries out gradually. Dealing with minor cracks: Small cracks in the walls and gaps in joinery are both common signs of shrinkage. These should be left for a few months and then sealed after your new home has dried out. When you redecorate, use a good filler for any gaps and plaster cracks that may have arisen from normal drying-out and shrinkage. Reduce condensation: Keeping your trickle vents within your windows open

will reduce condensation. If it does appear on your windows, simply wipe it away. Left alone, condensation can cause a lot of damage, and lead to unnecessary repair costs. Redecoration: The builder will probably have painted the walls with a light paint that lets moisture get out during the drying out period. Further coats of emulsion and oil-based paints or wallpaper can be put on after about 9-12 months. Wardrobe ventilation: Built-in wardrobe doors should be kept slightly ajar during the drying out period, especially if the wardrobe is on an external wall. And finally… Loft care: Check the loft regularly for signs of condensation. The builder will have put permanent ventilation in the roof, usually at the eaves, to avoid condensation. These openings, which take the form of slots or holes, should not be covered. Do not leave the loft hatch open because this will allow warm moist air into the loft, wasting heat and increasing the risk of condensation.

Passivhaus training to support drive for net-zero CSIC to deliver Passivhaus in Practice programme for Scottish construction sector workers onstruction Scotland Innovation Centre (CSIC) has launched a new initiative to train construction sector professionals in Passivhaus standards – a worldrenowned approach to the design and construction of highly energy efficient buildings.

Working closely with a range of Passivhaus experts, CSIC is offering funded training opportunities to boost skills in Passivhaus systems and meet the demand for a more sustainable built environment. Passivhaus certified buildings can achieve a reduction of up to 75% in space heating requirements compared to the UK’s typical newbuild homes and are proven to reduce carbon consumption, lower energy costs and improve the health and wellbeing of occupiers. Supported by the Scottish Funding Council, Passivhaus in Practice aims to promote the wider adoption of environmentally friendly construction to help reduce the sector’s carbon footprint, in line with Scotland’s national net-zero emissions targets. The initiative is designed to provide up to 500 participants with the foundations for formal accreditation and will include a mix of online, augmented reality (AR) and hands-on training modules delivered at CSIC’s

Innovation Factory near Hamilton. Learners will explore the pillars of Passivhaus design - including thermal bridging, airtightness, and ventilation - and discuss the wider environmental, societal and industry benefits of the standard. The Future Of Electric Heating - Are You Ready? Electric Heating systems are said to last 50% longer than oil or gas boilers. his innovative and forward-thinking project by Four Architects has created a relaxing and welcoming space at a Manchester office building for commuters to shower and change after cycling into work. Dekton® by Cosentino in 4mm Kreta was specified for the walls and 8mm Lunar for the flooring, both from the Industrial collection, along with 11 Exelis shower trays in Nolita and three Silence basins in Miami Vena. Dekton® is a carbon neutral product for its entire life cycle, making it a truly sustainable choice perfect for climate conscious contractors. It’s also highly durable as it’s resistant to UV rays, scratches, stains and thermal shock and it can also be used for wall cladding and flooring both inside and out for a fully co-ordinated look.

“When it came to designing the shower block and bike store, we knew we had to use durable, hardwearing materials,” explains Matt Atkinson, Director at Four Architects. “At the same time, the space needed to be easy to clean, hygienic and low maintenance as well as offering commuters and workers somewhere comfortable, warm and welcoming for them to shower and change after cycling into work then get

The whole project took around 12 weeks in total and this included tiling, laying the Dekton® surfaces, installing showers, basins and the bike store. The result is a really forward-thinking space that commuters can use to help get their working day off to a great start. The eco-credentials of the Dekton® also help to give this Manchester city centre office building a sustainable building solution.

Welsh Slate heads up Sarah Beeny’s new home Roofing slates by Welsh Slate star in presenter’s new TV programme. oofing slates by Welsh Slate were the material of choice for TV property expert Sarah Beeny’s own home-inthe-making which is the star of the Channel 4 series “Sarah Beeny’s new life in the country”.

The “Homes on 4” series follows Sarah and her family (husband and four sons aged 11 to 17 years) as they swap London life for a new start on a 220acre, semi-derelict former dairy farm in Somerset, where they are building a modern and sustainable stately home of their dreams. Episode 8 of the first series shows the family visiting the Welsh Slate quarry where the Penrhyn Heather Blue slates are produced that are then shown

being laid on the 15m x 16m mainly mansard roof of the three-storey, sevenbedroomed mock stately home. Sarah even has a go at splitting the premium slates herself, remarking that it was “seriously impressive” that every one of the slates used on the house was split by hand. Welsh Slate commercial director Michael Hallé explained on the programme how the quarry once employed 3,000 people and still produces three million slates per year. Also, that maximising yield is very important and not only do they make roofing slates but also walling, paving, decorative aggregates and landscape products.

Roofing contractor Geoff Spinks of G&L Roofing agreed with Sarah that the slates were “a joy to fit” due to their flatness. He described the Penrhyn Heather Blues as “really, really nice slates” that were “lovely to lay”. They also feature as vertical cladding on some elements of the steeply pitched mansard roof. The scaffolding came down some seven months after work started on site, with Sarah exclaiming the newly revealed limestone-clad house, now waterproof in readiness for the winter, was a “thing of beauty”. Welsh Slate is also expected to feature in the second (commissioned) and third (to be confirmed) series of the show. In the second, scants (large slabs) of slate will be used as landscaping around the pond, and in the third, on a patio in the walled garden to the main house which was designed by husband Graham (Swift). Michael Hallé said: “Not only do we feel privileged that Sarah recognised that our slate is ‘the best slate you could possibly have’ but also that she was genuinely enthused at how the slates are produced.” The focus on sustainability has included the use of ICF (Insulated Concrete Forms) for the building’s shell, recycled plastic windows, water from a bore hole, and a modern wastewater plant which returns cleansed wastewater to the land. #SarahBeenynewlife

Why is EPDM so long-lasting? EPDM became a natural choice for roofing solutions following the introduction of the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Passage of Clean Air Amendment Act, which came into law in the 1970s and negatively impacted asphalt.

Alternative flat roofing options to EPDM are prone to degradation due to the loss of mechanical properties caused by exposure to UV. Temperature fluctuations, even those that are normal for the changing UK seasons, cause stress in materials with low degrees of flexibility and elasticity. This results in cracks and tearing – particularly at any joints or details.

Roofing & cladding When applied correctly, to adequately prepared roof decks, EPDM rubber roofs far outperform other types of roofing. EPDM is resistant to UV radiation, as well as ozone and temperature fluctuations, and has excellent waterproofing, which would otherwise age the product significantly. EPDM membranes have elasticity of over 300% to accommodate building movement and extremes in temperature. At temperatures as low as – 45oC, flexibility and elasticity are retained. One of the many benefits of RubberCover roofs is that they can be adapted throughout their long life span to incorporate such additions as rooflights and vent pipes, meaning homeowners have a roofing solution that works for their evolving house plans. As EPDM membranes are manufactured in very large sizes for up to 15.25m x 30.5m, many small flat roofs can be installed with a single sheet of membrane. This further reduces, or often completely removes, the need for seams, in turn extending the product’s waterproofing efficiency over time.

Installing for longevity While the system is designed with longevity at the forefront, to ensure it is truly futureproofed, it must be installed by a fully trained contractor. The application is as important as the product. Although EPDM is a simple system to install, even the most qualified roofing professional should continually invest in their training and development by attending courses, such as ones on single ply roofing solutions. Training programmes are designed to take individuals through the entire process of implementing EPDM systems with quality, longevity and effectiveness guaranteed. The best way to ensure the longevity of a roof’s performance – and avoid problems and failures down the line – is to use a full water-proofing system of compatible products, which consists

of a membrane, adhesive, tape and primer from the same brand. It also helps to aid traceability, which is increasingly important on commercial projects, and helps to keep a high standard of roofing in the UK. Rubber roofs can be applied using cold, water-based adhesives. This results in a safe, faster application method, and a lightweight and flexible result. Adhered roof systems also have a high wind uplift performance rating, which makes them a good choice to further enhance the resilience of a structure.

A future proofed solution The natural characteristics of EPDM, and how it is supplied and applied, are the key reasons for its outstanding longevity. With this in mind, it’s no surprise that installations are still as effective today, no matter the tornadoes, snow, or sun they have been exposed to.

Howells Supplies Conservatory Roof For Mansion Refurb Until recently, Doxford House in Sunderland was a derelict Georgian mansion, listed on the 2009 Heritage at Risk Register. Now in private ownership the property has been restored to a single residence, undergoing significant remodelling and refurbishment. atent glazing specialist, Howells was selected to manufacture and install a new roof for the ‘Winter Garden’, a large conservatory and part of the formal entrance onto Warden Law Lane.

“I was searching the internet for an appropriate rafter glazing system, and I found Howells,” says Gary Lax, Doxford House site manager. “I was impressed by their skill and capability, and experience with period buildings. Having spoken with Walter (Howells), we decided to go with them; he was such a nice character.” Built in 1775, only two elements of Doxford House are Grade II listed – a mosaic floor and areas of decorative stonework. However, to help retain the character of the property, the owner chose to use authentic materials wherever possible.

The Winter Garden ‘The winter garden is a unique iron and timber framed conservatory containing decorative stonework...The room appears to have been inspired by the Victorian passion for romantic, idealised notions of landscape and legend...’ (source: sunderland.gov.uk)

Sadly, the original structure of the winter garden was beyond repair and has been rebuilt using C24 grade construction timber which is capable of withstanding high loads and wide spans. New Accoya timber windows were installed on sandstone dwarf walls.

New Aluminium Roof Howells’s HGR1 aluminium rafter bar system was chosen as a sympathetic yet high-performance solution for the new conservatory roof. Glazed with 11.5mm clear laminated and toughened shaped glass, the roof required additional support to comply with building regulations. To accommodate the weight of the glass, the reinstated C24 timber rafters were laminated to a steel subframe, determined by steel calculations. The HGR1 aluminium rafter bars then fit seamlessly atop the new timbers.

For a cohesive and complementary finish, the aluminium rafter bars were powder coated in anthracite grey (RAL 9023). The roof was completed with bespoke pressed metal in the hips and ridges. “Howells were a pleasure to work with. They were fast, reliable and efficient.
