STÉPHANIE COERTEN Stéph is one funny gal! Besides her career as a comedian, she has been hosting events for 15 years now, wow! Under her belt are events such as Festival Valvert, Anima Festival, Media 10/10, Le Banff Mountain Film Festival and Fête de l’Iris. Let’s see what surprises she has in store for the Imagine audience on Friday night!

BAI KAMARA JR. Bai is an entertainer with a difference. First off he is a Brussels based singer/songwriter and producer from Sierra Leone who has released three solo albums with critical acclaim. He has worked with artists such as Youssou N’dour and Dani Klein (Vaya Con Dios), sharing the stage with Habib Koité, Keziah Jones and Cassandra Wilson. Bai is also a firm supporter of human rights and youth, keeping a critical eye on the world around us whilst bringing a positive message through his music and in everything he does. Bai will be hosting Saturday nights international final and promises to please!

Everyone follows different paradigms in life with or without consciously knowing it. The one that brought these 4 young Romanians together is rock music. It all started in 2004 and since then they toured all around their native country as well as abroad in Hungary, Bosnia, Germany and Spain. Their skills, talent and sheer passion on stage has brought them many followers, good reviews and awards. One such award was their success at Imagine Romania 2010.

Lunar Rays pop (Lier)

Lunar Rays are just back from rocking Imagine Sweden after their winning performance at the Imagine Regional Flemish Finals. They say they are not really searching for a new sound, but trying to be honest and pure. Their performances take the listener through a range of moods from easy listening songs to more danceable compositions. Watch out for these guys!

Abuzska was formed around 2008 and after a few band member changes they managed to find the perfect mix. Always in party mode, their style is a blend of ska, rock and reggae mixed in with a little folk and funk and lot of punk attitude! Their aim is to spread positive fibes through their music with a strong social message.

Sir Francis rock (Hasselt)

Sir Francis has their roots in downtown Hasselt and have been diagnosed with a serious case of the blues. Not to worry though, they spice it up with a a good dosage of rock, garage and jazz, the result is explosive. Although the Imagine preselections was one of their first concerts together they managed to overwhelm the jury with a strong frontman by a solid rhythms section and an amazing guitarist.

Soondage have been rockin under different formations since 2008. In a relatively short time the group has gained local recognition by jamming at renowned events throughout Belgium. Besides preparing to compete for the Imagine title, they are currently recording an EP that is set for release this summer.

Ruth appeared on stage at the Imagine Vlaams-Brabant preselections with just a guitar and a microphone and instantly mesmerized the crowd with her soulful voice and charisma. She is filled with expression and heart, engaging her audience in an emotional experience where music and lyric are beautifully intertwined as one.

Double It Up is a modern retro rock´n´roll group with an original repertoire and a great attitude. They hail from Gotland, Sweden, an island situated in the Baltic Sea and are here to boogie your socks off!

Ziggy pop/rock (Brussels)

Ziggy’s musical world revolves around the songs composed by vocalist/guitarist Pablo. Tommaso (Drummer) met him while playing with Playground, a group who won the public prize at Music Live/Imagine 2009. When Elia (Bass) and Andrea (Lead Guitar) joined them in 2010 the band took the name Ziggy and embarked on a musical trip that encompasses britpop, rock and blues.

Estrange was formed in March 2010 and since then they have already had a bunch of concerts throughout Belgium. Their original music and sheer drive to perform has gotten them places on some of the countrie’s best stages this year, including the Imagine Belgium National Final.

Blackbird rock (Antwerp)

It’s hard to put Blackbird in a box. You can pick up in their music influences from artists as diverse as Radiohead, Miles Davis and DJ Shadow. Did we mention that this is a rock band without a bassist? Come check out how these unusual suspects are breakin’ all the rules..

Green Moon folk/jazz (Ovifat)

Téo Crommen, Lorcan Fahy and Lucas Deru all come from families of musicians. They first met during a Musique Acoustique training camp in Virton, deep down in the Belgian south. Later they got together again in a bedroom studio in Ovifat and the folk trio Green Moon was born!

Swaggalicious hip hop

Swaggalicious (SLB) is a ‘mainstream rap-crew’ formed by two young MCs based in Gent: Aswinundefined and DriesOG. Despite their age they already know how to turn a venue upside down. During the Imagine preselections and Flemish finals they have proven themselves as huge crowd-pleasers, let’s see what they can pull off for the National Final. Hands in the air for Swaggalicious!

Rotonde Madame’s Tout Le Monde acoustic (Brussels) 15:00 to 15:25 Isabelle and Camille met during their secondary studies through their common passion for music and writing, it didn’t take them long to form Madame’s Tout le Monde. The recipe is simple but effective: two voices and one guitar telling stories through their music. After a few gigs they gained momentum and soon participated in Imagine 2010 where they won a tour to Sweden.

X-plod was established in 2006 by the Comaroni brothers Andrei (Vocals) & Cristian (Guitar). They were later joined by another set of brothers: Florian and Iulian, playing bass and drums. At the time they had composed a few demo songs, which they played live during a series of club concerts in Bucharest and other cities. In 2007, Bubu Cernea and Mihai Cerbu replaced the drummer and bassist. They have won received several local distinctions and have recorded an album due to be released soon.

What do you get when you combine the melancholies of Bon Iver with the sounds of Andrew Bird and the vocals of the Fleet Foxes? You guessed it… Gepetto & The Whales! This folky quartet from Malle won the Imagine 2010 Belgian National Finals with verve and now return to give us a piece of their magic.

Jan Ivar Trio jazz (Norway)

This eclectic trio came together to perform in Imagine Norway/UKM where they worked their way to the top. They are experienced musicians who have been playing together in several different projects. Jan Ivar Ekroll has played the piano and trumpet for over 9 years, Brynjar has played the electric bass since the age of 12, recently having started the upright bass as well and it is rumoured that Andreas Juliebø was born with drum sticks in his hands! These grooving jazzers are sure to add a unique flavour to the competition..

Noordung rock/metal (Slovenia)

Noordung are 5 dudes from the towns of Idrija and Rovte in Slovenia. Formed in 2009 the group has written 11 of their own tracks to date, covering a wide musical territory between nu-metal, alternative and modern rock. They have won some of the biggest national competitions for young musicians in Slovenia, one of them being Imagine Slovenia/NajstFest in 2010.

Melting Time indie/folk/rock

They play something they describe as hyperactive-indie-pop-punk. Melting Time were winners at the Imagine Belgium Final last year and went on to perform at Imagine Festival 2010 in Norway. They have just released an EP championing their original style influenced by the Arctic Monkeys, Test Icicles, Foals and The Hives.

Born in Montpellier in southern France, Lea Addou now lives in Agde. With a musician for a father, she was given her first instrument (a violin) at the age of 5. At 8 she decided to learn to play the piano and began singing a few years later. She’s currently in High School, juggling her studies and passion for music. She lists her major influences from Janis Joplin to MGMT, David Bowie to Chily Gonzales and Serge Gainsbourg to the Beatles. For Lea, creativity has no limits, especially not in style!

EPepE was formed in 2008 and before participating in Imagine had been gigging regularly in their hometowns of Koprivnica and Zagreb. They impressed the Imagine Croatia jury with their own mixture of punk and rock, which draws its influence from The Ramones, The Stooges, The Police and even Hanson. Given their sheer enthusiasm and energy on stage it was no surprise when they won their national Imagine Final and are now in Brussels to represent Croatia at Imagine Festival 2011.

Opmoc ska/funk/jazz (Brussels)

Six guys armed with six instruments, Opmoc bring with them a loads of energy and good vibes wherever they go! They call their music «Skunk» , a unique genre found somewhere between ska and funk. Opmoc were Imagine Belgium winners in 2009 and have recently toured Europe on the ‘Opmoc Bus’, cruising from Italy to Spain. This year they haven taken the Belgian festival scene by storm and promise to bring some musical madness to Imagine Festival 2011.

A young exciting folk music duo that performs tunes from their native region of Ångermanland in Sweden as well as self penned material of their own. Magdalena Eriksson plays the fiddle and Mattias Mårtensson provides a steady groove on the cittern/bouzouki. They won Imagine Sweden 2011 and are now ready to take on the competition in Brussels!

Lucy Lucy! indie/pop/folk (Brussels) The musical landscape in Brussels is brimming with more and more young and promising artists, one such group being Lucy Lucy!, a band who have quickly made a name for themselves by appearing alongside the biggest bands in the Belgian scene, such as Girls in Hawaii, The Tellers and Sharko. Signed up by the Belgian label 62tv Records, they produced The Morning Can Wait EP, released in September 2009. Lucy Lucy! are in rapid ascent with their luscious mix of rock and folk ready to win over any listener in their path.
