Thewinningcoverpiece

The African Peacock Necklace and earrings are made from sterling silver and cubic zirconia stones in earthy African colours. Inspired from the diversity in African culture and the vibrant colours and textiles, Retha says she didn’t want to isolate designs by focusing on just one culture or tribe. “I looked at Africa as a unit or one soul celebrating all beauty. The same with the calabash hoops which are inspired by the African pots many women use in everyday life.”

ourfirst2025coverwinner!

Congratulations to Dust Designs Jewellery - founded by owner Retha Minnie - who is the first winner of J-ZINE Edit’s monthly cover competition!

Dust Designs Jewellery started around 2006/2007 when Retha’s mother organised a hobby class for her to do after work. “I used to be a graphic designer in Jo’burg. Back then I wanted to call it ‘Pixie Dust’ and focus on artisanal and kids jewellery range,” says Retha.

“As a child I was always playing around with coloured wires and beads making ring and bracelets I just never realised I could do this as a career!”

The brand was officially established in 2012 while Retha was still studying at TUT (Tshwane University of Technology) where she completed her degree in Jewellery Design and Manufacturing

“Everything is created by myself and my design team,” says Retha. “Nothing is imported or bought through wholesalers. I do a combination of handmade benchwork and wax castings which are 3D printed This helps when clients bring specific ideas to us which they want made. If a client is unsure of what they want, I design for them from scratch.”

Retha says her ‘go to’ or natural style is quite rough or artistic, “But I’m very versatile in the different ranges that I create.

“I have a beautiful African range inspired by different cultures. It’s colourful and beautiful with clean lines and geometric shapes I also love creating botanical or floral jewellery along with Moorish style designs.”

eJ-word

“It’sgotagroove,it'sgotameaning... it’sthetime,istheplace,isthemotion isthewaywearefeeling”

Let’s face it: after the holiday whirlwind – now a distant memory along with (in my case) several soft serve ice-creams –most of us are either clutching our morning coffee with a steely resolve or still trying to find our rhythm (no judgment!) and get our mojo back!

It wasn’t too difficult to find my groove again after my wonderful partner Jenny, sent me a photo of her new 2025 look showcasing a terrific take on the quintessential quiff! I was inspired to dive into January with the perfect theme for our J-ZINE Edit: : ‘refresh’. It’s about shedding the old, embracing the new, and doing it all with a touch of flair and individuality - because why not?

In this issue, we not only explore ‘refresh’ in bringing you the new, the unexpected, the original but sharing what ‘refresh’ means in the digital age - especially in the world of African jewellery; and how as the continent’s first and only hybrid jewellery magazine, J-ZINE Edit fosters a dynamic and everevolving dialogue, engaging both trade professionals and consumers in real-time.

Through our online presence, we have effectively become a catalyst for the growth and international recognition of the African jewellery industry.

Here’s to a year of refreshment and unapologetic African jewellery design brilliance!

Well! We hit the ground running. Our diaries are filling up, we ’ ve implemented small changes, held strat sessions, seen clients and all this while working on our January J-ZINE Edit.

We promised to publish by the 23rd and, here we are.

It is no easy task coming up with fresh content each and every month. Especially after a long holiday. However, we have a wealth of talent to work with on this continent and this certainly does make our job so much easier.

Research does take up much of our time, but the actual physical act of laying out the publication and creating beautiful ads is all down to my amazing partner Jason. How he does it, and still finds the time to smile and be the positive person he is, is mind boggling.

Returning to work with renewed energy, we examined our current business model and added a few refreshing ideas. Our aim is to ensure that J-ZINE Edit is distributed to as many readers as possible, while ensuring accurate information and an entertaining read.

The buzzword of the season seems to be ‘thrive’. What a wonderful word. I sincerely wish this for all our readers.

In the meantime, sit back, relax and enjoy this issue of our J-ZINE Edit.

sugalite - one seriously stunning gemsone!

Be smart and know what you're buying - and wearingwith a reputable and industry-recognised certification

This vibrant, purple beauty is a total showstopper, with rich hues that range from deep violet to a dreamy lavender. Its eye-catching colour is actually caused by manganese.

Sugalite is often called the ‘Stone of Healing’ because it’s believed to bring peace, emotional balance, and spiritual growth. Wearing a sugalite is like carrying around a piece of calm and positive energy all day! And if you're looking for something that’s as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside, sugalite is definitely the gemstone to check out.

Fascinating facts!

Sugilite was first discovered in South Africa’s Northern Cape province in 1973 by accident when a mine roof caved in and was first mistaken to be sogdianite.

ZA is one of the primary sources and richest deposits of sugalite in the world, making it a prized find for collectors and gem enthusiasts.

Similar to lapis lazuli, turquoise and fei cui jade, sugilite is found as massive polycrystalline materials and is suitable for carving because of its granular nature.

The name ‘sugalite’ comes from its discoverer, Japanese mineralogist Ken-Ichiro Sugi, who found the gem in the 1940s.

Ensure your sugalite and other gemstones make the grade with EGL!

Picture this: it's 2025, and African jewellery isn’t just about heritage; it’s about innovation! This year, ‘refresh’ is the mantra breathing new life into the continent’s adornments.

It’s a celebration of tradition reimagined, where ancient techniques meet bold, contemporary flair. It isn’t just about sparkle; it’s about soul!

‘Refresh’ in African jewellery design is a vibrant remix. Designers are blending sustainable materials with cultural motifs, creating pieces which tell stories of resilience and renewal. Think upcycled metals adorned with colourful beads or natural gemstones transformed into statement pieces that radiate joy and meaning.

Shapes and forms are getting a reboot, too. Classic cowrie shells now dangle from modern, geometric frames, and traditional African beadwork dances on avant-garde chokers. Colours? Oh, they’re unapologetically bold! Picture electric blues, fiery reds, and sun-kissed yellows bringing every outfit to life.

But it’s not just about aesthetics, it’s about connection. Jewellery with modular designs lets wearers customise their look, celebrating individuality while honouring collective heritage. Imagine a bracelet that evolves with you, piece by piece. What about solar-powered African gemstones which glow after sunset? And why not, Africa is all about innovation!

As we stride into 2025, African jewellery is the ultimate refresh: a fusion of the past and the future, sparking joy, sustainability, and a deep sense of identity Ready to shine?

When it comes to diamonds, the ‘4Cs’ are your best friends! They help you figure out what makes one diamond sparkle a little brighter than the next.

Cut: This is all about how the diamond is shaped and faceted. A great cut makes a diamond sparkle like it’s got its own spotlight. The better the cut, the more light bounces off, giving it that dazzling glow. So, a perfect cut? Total game changer.

Colour: Believe it or not, diamonds come in a variety of colours, from colourless (the super high-end, toptier stuff) to shades of yellow or brown. The less colour, the more valuable the diamond. So if you ’ re aiming for that ‘ wow ’ factor, go for a colourless or near-colourless gem!

Clarity: This one ’ s about the diamond’s inner and outer blemishes, aka inclusions and imperfections. A diamond with fewer imperfections will sparkle more and be worth more. But don’t sweat the small stuff! Most inclusions are microscopic and only visible under magnification.

Carat: This is all about size. One carat equals 0.2 grams, so a bigger diamond = more carats. But remember, bigger isn’t always better. A smaller diamond with a perfect cut can still steal the show!

When you ’ re hunting for your perfect diamond, keep these four Cs in mind It's all about finding that balance between sparkle, size, and your budget.

Happy diamond shopping!

Jewellery Afrika has quickly become a shining star in the world of African jewellery design, thanks to its innovative digital platform that brings local talent into the global spotlight. By breaking down barriers and embracing the power of the internet, Jewellery Afrika has turned into a go-to hub for designers and jewellery lovers from all over the world.

One of the key reasons for its success is how accessible and inclusive the platform is. Traditional jewellery markets, especially in Africa, often struggle with limited reach and lack of visibility for designers.

Jewellery Afrika has flipped the script by providing a digital space where creators from all over the continent, no matter where they are based, can showcase their work to a global audience. This opens up incredible opportunities for African jewellers to grow their brands, attract customers, and compete on the world stage

But it doesn’t stop there. Jewellery Afrika’s digital nature allows it to constantly evolve and engage with both industry professionals and consumers in real-time.

The monthly digital magazine, J-ZINE Edit, is a big part of this. As Africa’s first hybrid jewellery magazine, it’s packed with everything from spotlighting new designers to diving into trends and techniques. Because it’s online, J-ZINE Edit is super easy to access from anywhere, making it the perfect way to keep up with the latest happenings in the African jewellery scene.

The interactive side of the platform is another reason ewellery Afrika is such a hit. Social media and community features allow designers to chat directly with their customers, share feedback, and build lasting relationships. These personal connections are especially important in a market where storytelling and cultural context play such a big role in jewellery This real-time engagement helps designers grow their brand and keep customers coming back.

The platform also unlocks exposure which would otherwise be out of reach for many From live-streamed events like Jewellex Africa to virtual pop-ups and podcasts, designers now have the chance to showcase their work on a global stage. These events are archived and available anytime, creating ongoing opportunities for learning, collaboration, and inspiration. And let’s not forget about the power of real-time analytics. Jewellery Afrika’s ability to track user behaviour helps designers understand what their customers want, allowing them to fine-tune their collections to meet demand.

In short, Jewellery Afrika is leading the way by combining accessibility, global reach, and engagement in a way that traditional markets just can’t. By embracing the digital world, it's giving African jewellery designers the tools they need to grow their brands and gain global recognition.

The 21st century is here, and Jewellery Afrika is ready to take it on!
