Message from the Board Chair and CEO Dear Friends, What a pleasure it is to reflect on the past year, which was marked by tremendous achievements, outstanding leadership and an overriding sense of Jewish community that extends beyond our campus (which is celebrating 10 years in the new building in October!) The vibrancy of our community has been reinvigorated with innovative new programs and a bustle around campus that has inspired us all. Our Annual Campaign has remained steady and our new Community Legacy Project is going strong— from receiving a coveted 4-star rating by Charity Navigator for the seventh year in a row to drawing sold-out attendance for our annual event, Live with the Beatles. We’ve cultivated partnerships across our Jewish community and, after years of thought, have developed a strong and growing Men’s Division and Women@Night group. Inspired by the 1964 Freedom Summer 50th anniversary, our JCRC wove an amazing thread of relationship building, education and advocacy with our local African American community through five different activities. Throughout the course of the year, we have not forgotten that our roots lie in Silicon Valley and that we must be able to relate to our local Jewish community, both young and old. This year we created multiple ways for people to converse with us—a JValley app (available on iPhones and Androids), unique Twitter hashtags and guides to Jewish life and events, available digitally and in print. Our communication with the community has been at the forefront of all that we did this year. From more personalized emails to a quest for individual stories, we want Jews in Silicon Valley to be heard. The JHist campaign asking people to share their Jewish histories collected dozens of unique stories. You cannot have such accomplishments without dedicated lay and professional leadership, and our Federation is fortunate to have both— all smart, passionate and fully committed to our cause. It has been deeply satisfying for each of us to be part of this wonderful organization, especially during the past year. We hope you, too, feel a sense of accomplishment knowing you helped make extraordinary things possible for so many. We welcome your comments, seek your volunteer efforts and are grateful for your generous donations! B’shalom,
Jeff Kanel Board Chair
Jyl Jurman CEO

The 2013-14 board and campaign chair, Julie Krigel, took the 2014 Campaign to heart, working with Federation staff to create a plethora of new initiatives and means for giving. JHist of it This year’s campaign asked the Silicon Valley community to “give us the JHist of it.” These “JHists” were short (sometimes Twitter short) stories of what inspired our local community members to get involved and give to Federation. It was amazing to watch the campaign grow into dozens of stories, some from as far as the East Coast, all shared via social media. Kiddush Cup Challenge The solicitors of 2013-14 took the responsibility very seriously. A competition ensued where each Kiddush Cup team worked to out-ask the other teams. From new donors to increased gifts, everything was tracked and the winners were announced on June 26. Initiative Funding A result of the strategic planning done by the Federation in 2012 was the concept of initiative funding. The first year resulted in funding specifically for teens and seniors, and in 2013-14 grew to include Russian language programming as well.

AS WE ENTER THE TENTH YEAR OF BEING ON THE LEVY FAMILY CAMPUS, it is a delight to be able to report on some major initiatives and enhancements over the course of 2013-14. All of these advances were accomplished without any increase to the common area maintenance costs (CAM). Landscaping Upgrades The educational wing of campus received enhancements on the lawn and preschool activity areas. Fiber bark and artificial grass were added to preschool play space and a new lawn and drainage system were added to the Yavneh playground. Community Security Briefings In partnership with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) the Levy Family Campus is continuing to host quarterly security briefings. Commitment to Safety & Awareness The campus continues to be an American Red Cross emergency evacuation shelter. In addition to this partnership, the campus has been home to numerous blood drives during the course of 2013-14. The County of Santa Clara considers the Levy Family Campus to be a point of distribution in case of a pandemic event. This year the campus surveillance system storage and communication devices were updated to ensure a more secure space. Lighting This year marked the beginning of a full campus conversion from general lighting to LED, which will reduce operating costs and our impact the environment- in direct relationship with our mission of tikkun olam (repairing the world.) Campus Usage In addition to the many celebrations hosted on campus each year, this year the site was also home to major events including: the Live with Beatles, JCC Gala, JFS’ Small Plates and the Jewish Music Festival.

CARDOZO SOCIETY IS OUR AFFINITY GROUP FOR ATTORNEYS AND LEGAL PROFESSIONALS. The group meets to learn and discuss important and relevant issues regarding local, state and national legal matters. The meetings often provide lawyers with Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) credits. This past year, we collaborated with Congregation Shir Hadash. Under Rabbi Melanie Aron’s guidance, there were monthly lunch and learn sessions led by local legal experts. In addition, we co-sponsored a lunch and learn with Congregation Shir Hadash and the New Israel Fund to hear from two NIF law fellows from Israel studying in the states.

THE COMMUNITY RELATIONS COUNCIL IS A COMMITTEE OF THE FEDERATION, focused on strengthening relationships across our diverse Jewish community, building consensus on social justice issues, and using that consensus to strengthen relationships across the diverse faith and ethnic communities of Silicon Valley. Our work is motivated by the values of kehillah (gathering together), tzedek tirdof (pursuing justice), and re’ut (mutual respect). The committee itself is representative of our Jewish diversity in Silicon Valley, including members from 12 Jewish institutions and other at-large members that represent Israeli, LGBTQ, Russian, Holocaust survivor, high tech, government, academic, business and other nonprofit communities. The portfolios covered by the CRC include Israel, interfaith relations, environment, poverty, government relations, civil rights and Holocaust education. The committee is actively engaged with the statewide Jewish Public Affairs Committee of California, and the national Jewish Council for Public Affairs.

One of the many JHists shared this year: “#jhist Here Ruthie and I are visiting with children of newly resettled immigrants in Ashdod. All these seminal moments occurred because of being a member of the National Young Leadership of the UJA, and going on this UJA sponsored overseas tour. The tour let us witness how the money we raised, in various communities in the US, was actually used. We actually witnessed the process, how Jews were assisted to leave countries like the Soviet Union, taken to transport centers in Europe, transported to Israel and then helped to resettle there.” - AL SPORER

Men’s Division THE MEN’S DIVISION WAS LAUNCHED IN THE SUMMER OF 2013 chaired by Joel Rubnitz. The first event was a race car evening at K-1 Speed. In October the men joined together for a poker tournament that raised funds for camperships and scholarships. With events throughout the year and a special focus on social action and philanthropy, the Men’s Division was a great success of the year. Joel Rubnitz, Chair Rick Tavan, Poker Tournament Chair

THIS YEAR THE MIKVAH SERVED 9 SYNAGOGUE COMMUNITIES AND THEIR RABBIS as far South as Monterey and as far north as Foster City, facilitating immersions for new converts, brides and grooms, adoptions and more. Nearly 100 individuals came to the Mikvah for a spectrum of additional life cycle events including special birthdays, emergence from illness or difficult life circumstances, gratitude for new career paths, in order to get personal time for reflection and more. Mikvah guides led tours and study groups for several religious school and day school classes, to acquaint students with the traditions associated with Mikvah. The Mikvah culminated the year with a women’s event called “Embracing Life’s Transitions” which included learning about Mikvah as a way of affirming life changes and discussion with psychologist and Mikvah guide, Louise Stirpe-Gill. The Mikvah is fortunate to have the passion and commitment of Jan Rose who serves as Chair of Mikvah Operations and Deborah Zimmer, chair of the Mikvah Steering Committee. In the next year, the Mikvah seeks to train several new Mikvah guides to participate in this holy work.

THE PJ LIBRARY SENDS APPROXIMATELY 750 MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTIONS TO JEWISH FAMILIES IN THE SILICON VALLEY. PJ Library’s Yellow Comforter community wide philanthropy project, in its second year brought together all the preschools and synagogue religious schools that partner with the program and the JCC to raise over $5000.00 in cash and food. We gave over 1 ton of cans to Second Harvest alone. The program, this year called “Creating Community One Can at a Time” culminated in constructing can buildings in the lobby of the Levy Family Campus. PJ Library once again facilitated the community wide Hanukkah at Santana Row program which PJ Library created 6 years ago. This year, 1000 people from the entire spectrum of our community came out, braving very cold weather to attend. This program has not only offered a very important way for Jews to share communal pride, but has been a significant public space event that has nurtured a positive relationship between a significant communal venue and the Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley through PJ Library. This year, our Silicon Valley PJ Library program was selected to be involved in an alpha test of two new PJ Library initiatives, one, to offer books to children ages 9-11 who have “aged out” of the PJ Library program, and the other, to offer books in Russian to Jewish families previously from the former Soviet Union. In both cases, our PJ Library program is amongst a handful of communities nation wide to be selected to begin these programs which will begin over the next few months. Being selected for these projects is a tremendous vote of confidence by PJ Library national which regularly has recognized Silicon Valley PJL as an innovative leader.

THE SHALOM BABY PROGRAM OF THE JEWISH FEDERATION OF SILICON VALLEY delivers a gift bag and does a “mazal tov” community outreach visit to parents of newborn Jewish babies in our area. This program is a project of Women’s Philanthropy. These deliveries are made directly to the hospital when possible and home visits are also made when that is more convenient for the parents. Deliveries are also made for adoptive families. Examples of what the gift bags include are: a beautiful, laminated guide to celebrating Shabbat with babies and children, information about the PJ Library book program to which the parents can subscribe on behalf of their child, an information and help guide about Jewish birth traditions and how to connect with community, information about the Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley Programs and other communal programs, a stuffed animal, hand-made blankets donated by the “knitzvah” group or the Girl Scouts, under the auspices of Jewish Family Services of Silicon Valley and a copy of the latest jvalley.news . Several hospitals in the area contact us when a Jewish child is born. Local pre-schools, pediatricians, family members and friends also make referrals. Shalom Baby is always delighted to have the assistance of the community in conveying the news when a baby is born.

THE WOMEN’S PHILANTHROPY BOARD CONTINUES TO BE A GROUP OF DEDICATED, PASSIONATE WOMEN. Year after year, the women commit themselves to the important work of the Jewish Federation by supporting the campaign, soliciting donors and holding events. In this campaign year, we upheld our tradition and broke new ground for programming. The board was led by President, Susan Gavens and incoming President and VP Campaign, Alyssia Berkowitz. Ginny Baird served as Past President, Doris Katz and Karen Guggenheim served as VP’s of Outreach, Marcia Klein served as VP Education, Crystal Ouzillou served as Secretary, Sylvia Metz chaired the Lions division and Elise Wolf chaired the Shalom Baby program. General Board members who served (alpha by first name) were Barbara Bleadon, Bonnie Slavitt Moore, Danielle Robinson, Fran Chevlen, Jane Jacobson, Joelle Pluemer, Rene Prupes, Susie Brenner and Wendy Shapiro. Along with our dedication to the community, the women meet monthly to learn and discuss a wide variety of topics. This year, we learned Torah with Rabbi Leslie Alexander at our installation of the board; Linda Hurwitz, JFNA National Campaign Chair led a special campaign training just for Women’s Philanthropy; we heard from Lori Cinnamon from Jewish Family Services about the Embrace a Family program; Joe Viramontez of the Santa Clara Fire Department conducted a private safety training; we cooked Shabbat dinner for the Hillel students; we explored our local Vasona Park; and, we heard from local activist, Jean Wohlman about the issue of human trafficking. Our programs this year were also wide and varied. We started our year with a Jewish Heritage Trip to Italy which was chaired by Paula Levitt, Barbara Bleadon, Sylvia Metz, Susan Gavens, Alyssia Berkowitz and Susie Brenner. This trip was remarkable in the breadth and history of the Jews in Italy. We witnessed communities which dissolved into history, those which were forced into termination and those which continue to thrive even through hardships and the Holocaust. The travelers challenged themselves to think about our community and how each person is responsible for
16
the health and maintenance of a community. These heritage trips are valuable in observing historical trends for Jewish communities and recognizing the need for personal engagement in maintaining our local community. The trip was fun too! Locally, we held a very successful Thanksgivukkah event to celebrate the coincidence of Hanukkah and Thanksgiving on the same day. We attracted over 100 women to hear from Chef Rachel Wilson, taste and take home recipes for the unique celebration and to enjoy the private studio of designer, Julie Cavanaugh at Design Matters in Los Gatos. We held our Annual Mah Jongg tournament with a record number of attendees. This year, the proceeds benefitted projects to reduce hunger and food insecurity. Three $750 micro-grants were given to Project Noah of our local Jewish Family Services, Project Leket in Israel and the PJ Library’s Yellow Comforter Project which supported the Second Harvest Food Bank in San Jose. In December, our Lions of Judah ladies were treated to a private rehearsal of the San Jose Ballet with visiting Israeli choreographer, Danielle Agami. This was a special performance where the women became part of the performance as well and then were able to meet with the dancers. Danielle Agami and members of the San Jose Ballet staff joined the Lions for dinner. Finally, this year, in an effort to recognize the changing and challenging lives of women in Silicon Valley, Women’s Philanthropy launched its WP @ Night group. The hope is that this group develops a cohort of women who prefer to meet in the evening to mirror the daytime group to share their time, talent and treasury with the community.

THE JEWISH FEDERATION OF SILICON VALLEY IS THE CONVENER OF LOCAL YOUNG ADULT LEADERSHIP. Meeting monthly, this group shares resources, provides a space for collaboration and professional growth. In partnership with these groups, the Silicon Valley young adults produced two major events for the 21-45 crowd this year. The annual Hanukkah bash, Light it Up, saw over 200 people in attendance. The Purim Ball also had record-breaking attendance of over 150 participants. In addition to the community events put on annually by this team, the Federation was able to provide community to development to three Silicon Valley adults and sponsor their trips to TribeFest. TribeFest is a bi-annual conference put on by the Jewish Federations of North America that provides a space for innovative, out-of-the-box thinking and programming.
