JValley news

Dear friends, As we approach Rosh Hashanah I am grateful to be a member of such a strong community, one in which we have so many organizations flourishing (just look at this issue’s datebook!) and where our campus is celebrating a ten year anniversary (more on page 21!) We are told that our names are inscribed in the Book of Life on Rosh Hashanah and our fate is sealed on Yom Kippur. I am proud of our own community members who have inscribed their names in our local Book of Life, the book that lists the names of those who have dedicated themselves to leaving a legacy gift to our community.

Leadership and grass-roots support for local Catholic-Jewish relations

Mission to Mars

By Gabe Paoletti

By Steve Jackson

In preparation for the 50th anniversary of Nostra Aetate, the papal document released by the Catholic Church in 1965 that initiated the new era of CatholicJewish relations, I interviewed some of the most prominent Catholic leaders in Silicon Valley. Through these interviews, I learned about the current state of Catholic-Jewish relations broadly, as well as locally. In both spheres, it seems the relationship between Catholics and Jews is very positive and includes a steady flow of ideas, and a great deal of cooperation between the two communities. The San Jose diocese welcomes a positive and vital relationship with the Jewish community. The Bishop of San Jose, Fr. Patrick McGrath, has built a relationship with Temple Emanu-El, based on a clerical and personal friendship with their rabbi, Dana Magat. The two talk regularly and have visited each other’s congregations on multiple occasions. Fr. McGrath has participated in the dedication of a new Torah at Temple Emanu-El and Rabbi Magat visited the diocese service after the death of Pope John Paul II at Saint Joseph Cathedral. These interactions are indicative of the strong relationship between the Jewish and Catholic communities in San Jose. An important foundation of this relationship, according to the Bishop, is a shared interest in social justice issues. This relationship is part and parcel of Bishop McGrath’s mission to create a Catholic community that is inclusive and tolerant. Another pillar of the Catholic community in Silicon Valley is Santa Clara University, the local Catholic university. Last month I interviewed the president of the university, Fr. Michael Engh and learned about the relationships he has had with the Jewish community in the past, and what his university does to create a relationship with the Jewish community. As dean of Loyola-Marymount, he served on an interfaith committee and, while teaching a class on Western History, worked with a local Jewish group to explain the Holocaust to his students. At Santa Clara University, they currently have a professor of Jewish thought, Akiba Lerner, and offer several classes on Jewish theology and history. These include a class on Judaism in film, one on Jewish philosophy, and several classes in the Middle Eastern Studies department that deal directly with Judaism and Israel. The university is also affiliated with the Hillel of Silicon Valley organization for their Jewish students. These two interviews with some of the most important figures in the Catholic community of Silicon Valley have shown me the level of dedication to interfaith relations present in this community. The local Jewish community, as well, is dedicated to building this relationship. Rabbi Melanie Aron of Congregation Shir Hadash has held numerous interfaith events with her congregation, including organizing a Seder with Fr. Jon Pedigo with teens from Shir Hadash and Our Lady Of Guadalupe Catholic School, as well as participating in numerous interfaith organizations including Big Tent Judaism and Interfaith Partners For Peace. Here at the Silicon Valley Jewish Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley, we, along with Archbishop Mitty High School teacher Steve Herrera, have created a Teen Interfaith Council, in which Jewish and Catholic teens, among a broad mix of faiths, interact and learn from one another. Still, much can be done to improve this relationship further, and to create more understanding and fellowship between our communities. We can analyze the similar values and beliefs between our religions. We can stay in tune with developments and changes within each other’s communities and so have a greater understanding of one another. In a more concrete way, we can participate in upcoming interfaith events in Silicon Valley like the upcoming concert of Jewish music, performed by the Shir Hadash choir, to draw attention to local problems of homelessness that is being held at the Catholic Cathedral of St. Joseph on December 22, at 7:30 p.m. If you want to become more involved in interfaith initiatives contact Diane Fisher of the Jewish Community Relations Council at diane@jvalley.org or (408) 357-7504.

The Maimonides Society, composed of practitioners of the medical arts, has been part of the Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley for several decades. In the past, several times a year, we have had events that varied in nature, including, among others, talks on medical issues, musical presentations, and lectures on political, social and non-medical scientific topics. While the Maimonides Society has been largely dormant for several years, our hope is to reenergize and reinvigorate it. So, we are beginning with a uniquely exciting evening with a presentation on the first human mission to Mars by Dr. Pascal Lee, chairman of the Mars Institute and a planetary scientist working at the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute. Dr. Lee also is director of the NASA Haughton-Mars Project at NASA Ames Research Center, the project that is instrumental in planning human missions to Mars. Dr. Lee is the author of a marvelous educational (magnificently illustrated) book for children titled “Mission: Mars.” Dr. Lee’s presentation is “guaranteed” to hold you spellbound and leave you intrigued as he brings us cutting-edge information on this space program. Moreover, thanks to graciousness of Drs. Robert Pearl and Susan Smarr of the Permanente Medical Group, this Maimonides Society meeting Dr. Pascal Lee will take place at the new Kaiser conference center in the Kaiser Medical Office Building at 710 Lawrence Expressway. Set aside the evening of November 12, at 7:30 PM for this lecture on space exploration. This event is open to the entire community. Generating ideas in our community By Arielle Hendel The Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley has now concluded the first year of JValley Generator grants and we are gearing up for the next year. The JValley Generator grants are intended to germinate new projects in our community and generate energy around innovative Jewish programming. This past year, the Board of Directors wanted to focus funding on seniors, teens and young adult/family programming. These grants are intended to inspire individuals, organizations, congregations and agencies to develop and implement new or enhanced programs to meet significant community needs or create new and innovative engagement opportunities in the Silicon Valley Jewish community. It is the hope that these programs would have a measurable impact and be consistent with the Federation’s mission – to foster, initiate and preserve activities that strengthen Jewish life. In the first year, the grants were made to these worthy programs: Jewish Family Services of Silicon Valley’s (JFSSV) Community Freedom Seder for Russian Speakers;JFSSV’s Quality of Life Scholarships for Low-Income Seniors; Yavneh Day School’s Tzedek Garden; Shabbat the Queen: a Friday program by Varda Bashan for 5-8 year olds; Teen Leadership/Development Conference Subventions; AddisonPenzak Jewish Community Center’s (APJCC) program for adults with special needs; JFSSV’s HomeCare scholarships for low-income seniors; a music program for older adults through the APJCC; and APJCC’s Center for Jewish Life and Learning for “Wake Up and Taste the Torah” art project. In total, the grants exceeded $43,000. The funding for the next round of JValley Generator grants has been set aside from the Annual Campaign by the Federation’s Board of Directors. This year, funding for community innovative programs has been increased to over $50,000. As with the general allocations made by the Federation, the programs funded by these grants are vetted for their worthiness and efficacy. While grants are not guaranteed year after year, it is evident that these grants have identified and met some unmet needs in our community. If upon reading this list of worthy grant recipients, you feel compelled to perpetuate any of these grants with a personal donation, please contact Arielle Hendel (arielle@jvalley.org, (408) 357-7501) or Michelle Nathanson (michelle@jvalley.org, (408) 357-7508).

l cal news Dr. Michael Harris to speak about BDS at Temple Emanu-El By Nora Rousso, Temple Emanu-El Israel Action Committee The Temple Emanu-El Israel Action Committee cordially invites you to join us for bagels and coffee while we are visited by Dr. Michael Harris, a Bay Area physician and a founding member of San Francisco Voice for Israel. San Francisco Voice for Israel is the official Bay Area chapter of Stand With Us. The event is on Sunday, October 11, 11 a.m. in the Benefactor’s Room at Temple Emanu-El. Stand With Us is an international nonprofit organization, founded on the belief that education paves the road to peace. Stand With Us is dedicated to informing the public about Israel and to combating the extremism and anti-Semitism that often distort the issues. It has a very large presence on social media such as Facebook and Twitter. It focuses on achievements and challenges in Israel in the hope that knowledge of facts can help to correct common prejudices and promote discussions and policies which will lead to peace. Dr. Harris is an accomplished public speaker. He has spoken about Israel at synagogues, churches, political groups and senior citizen centers. He also stands up for Israel at anti-Israel demonstrations all over the Bay Area. He has appeared on radio and television news reports as a spokesperson for Stand With Us. Somehow he manages to do all this while maintaining a busy practice as a pediatrician in Marin County. Dr. Harris will principally speak about the Boycott, Divest, Sanction movement. He will devote some of his time to the history of BDS but will mainly focus on how we, as a community, can effectively advocate for Israel. This event is free and open to the public but RSVPs to Stephanie@templesanjose. org are requested. Bagels, fruit and coffee will be served. Contact Temple Emanu-El for more details, (408) 292-0939.

Congratulations to filmmaker Stephen Brooks on receiving the Remi Award!

The power of speech and preparing for atonement By Rabbi Philip Ohriner, Congregation Beth David In the coming week, Jews will gather together in communities around the world for a single purpose: to admit our missteps during the previous year and seek forgiveness for missing the mark of proper behavior. Leviticus 16:30 tells us that Yom Kippur is the day “atonement shall be made for you to purify you from all your transgressions. In the presence of G-d you shall be pure.” From this verse alone, it sounds like Yom Kippur is all about our relationship with G-d. There is a passivity within the verse that implies we are spectators on this most sacred of days, rather than the players. This is probably why Jewish tradition goes out of its way to remind us that there are no magic words or heartfelt prayers that can absolve us of the harm we have caused others; only the aggrieved can do that for us. The atonement we receive on Yom Kippur is contingent upon our efforts to right the wrongs we have committed against our fellow human beings. Jewish tradition gives us a nudge in one specific direction as we work towards righting wrongs in preparation for the atonement we seek. A quick look at the confessional section of the Yom Kippur liturgy in any prayer book reveals a pattern of prioritization that emphasizes the weapon we wield most often in hurting one another — our words. In most versions, almost one-third of the confessional focuses on sins committed through how we speak to one another.

Wishing you a Happy, Healthy, and Peaceful New Year! apr.com | SARATOGA

It is so easy to intentionally hurt someone through speech and even easier to unintentionally speak before we think. Like feathers torn from an old down pillow scattered in the wind, words can irretrievably leave our mouths in an instant. The irony in our ability to hurt one another so deeply through our words is that speech is one of the rare features that fundamentally make us human. In Targum Onkelos (the Aramaic translation of the Torah) the verse that we typically translate from the foundation story of humanity as “G-d breathed into Adam the breath of life,” is translated as, “G-d breathed into Adam the power to speak,” differentiating us from the rest of creation. Perhaps this is why the Yom Kippur confessional does little else but draw our attention to the sins we commit through our words. It is the prayer book’s way of reminding us that until we seek forgiveness for the hurtful things we have said over the course of the past year to family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, and fellow community members, true atonement will hang in the balance. The coming days provide us time to consider the difficult, unspoken words that must be voiced and to whom they must be directed for us to emerge on the other side of Yom Kippur in the fullness of our humanity, having utilized that which makes us most human to enable our own atonement. It is up to each of us to make them count!

Legacy Shabbat – we need you to come show your support By Alan Werba

This year Pat and I were tourists throughout Portugal and Spain with three other couples. Along the way we visited Jewish cultural and historic sites, but were dismayed to discover that the majority of Jewish synagogues and historic buildings are museums today rather than active, living institutions. Of course, this vacuum was caused by the Spanish Inquisition and further exacerbated by the events of the Holocaust. This situation made me think, “What if our synagogues, the JCC, Yavneh Day School or other local Jewish institutions are museums 100 years from now? Wouldn’t this state of affairs cause me to turn over in my grave?” The Silicon Valley Jewish Community Legacy Project has been gaining support and recognition throughout our local Jewish Community. For those of you who are still not familiar with this project, there are nine local agencies working on and supported by these efforts. The nine agencies include four of our local synagogues (Beth David, Shir Hadash, Sinai and Temple Emanu-El) and five agencies (Addison-Penzak JCC, Jewish Federation SV, Hillel SV, Jewish Family Services SV and Yavneh Day School). The primary goal of this project is to create a culture in Silicon Valley where legacy giving is included in every Jew’s estate plan. This project began several years ago and today has secured commitments from 94 community members to leave a total of 178 legacy gifts spread across these nine Jewish agencies. What exactly does it mean to leave a legacy gift? Let me illustrate how this might work. Suppose your family joins Temple Emanu-El when you move to San Jose. You join a Havurah, you make wonderful friendships, your children become B’nai Mitzvot and as your finances improve you become a regular donor to support the shul. In time, your daughter’s wedding day arrives and you are waiting with her for the rabbi to arrive for the Ketubbah ceremony. Your daughter looks at you and says how much she appreciates all the support you gave her to get to this moment and she is so glad that she will be married in a Jewish wedding ceremony. Then she asks, “Do you think Temple Emanu-El will still be around when my children reach this point in their lives?” Wow! What a question! You are actually a bit shaken thinking about the consequences if the answer would somehow be, “No.” You can’t fathom or tolerate that result. You resolve on the spot to figure out a way to perpetuate your financial support for the temple. Legacy gifts can be given during a donor’s lifetime or at the time they die. There are many ways to fund a legacy gift. It could involve naming the shul as a beneficiary to a life insurance policy, a retirement account or an annuity. It could revolve around the establishment of a charitable remainder unitrust. It might necessitate drafting a codicil to a will or an amendment to a living trust. Irrespective of the means, the goal is to preserve and perpetuate the institutions that play a meaningful role in our lives. In our efforts to stimulate dialogue and awareness regarding legacy giving, the four synagogues each hosted a Legacy Shabbat last fall along with one or more of the agencies participating in the project. These events were well attended and generated a great deal of enthusiasm for the Legacy Project. My favorite part of last year’s Legacy Shabbats was attending services at other synagogues and meeting new people in the Jewish community. I thought it was a great community-building activity. The calendar is set for this year’s Legacy Shabbat events and we expect the programs to be even better this year. Please mark your calendars and try to attend at least one so you can learn more about Legacy giving, celebrate the commitments already made and meet more of the local Jewish community members. Here is the schedule for this year.

The blessing of grand-parenting

By Arielle Hendel

Our tradition is ripe with references to the importance of grandparents as the backbone of our families. There are many biblical examples, including Jacob’s blessing of his grandsons, Ephraim and Menasseh, as well as the core of the Sh’ma, from Genesis, that commands us to teach our children and our children’s children. The former speaks to a deep and holy relationship, the latter to the transmittal of our faith and traditions.

PJ Our Way is the ‘next chapter’ for PJ Library. Even if you did not participate in PJ Library, you can join the PJ Our Way. It is a program for 9 through 11 year olds to receive free monthly Jewishthemed chapter books from the Harold Grinspoon Foundation and the Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley. You can sign up online at: pjourway.org. A parent needs to be available to facilitate the sign up. In addition to receiving free monthly books, the program boasts a robust website where the readers can post reviews of the books (written or video), parents can read about the books to determine if the content is appropriate for their child, and the National Design Team provides additional content. The National Design Team is made up of 10 kids from across North America. These kids Skype monthly to discuss book selection, meet with authors and post their reviews on the PJOurWay site. This is an amazing opportunity for kids who want to step into the driver’s seat and create content for the website in a safe and fun environment. Through October 19, we will be accepting Design Team applications. Please help us spread the word! Here are a few tools to help you recruit for the Design Team: • Design Team application link: www.jvalley.org/pjdesign • Link to Design Team outreach video (made by Teen leader, Zachary Charlick from Ohio) https://vimeo.com/134021646 We would love to have our community represented on the National Design Team! If you know a “tween” aged 9 11 years old who might want to have this kind of experience and exposure, please pass on this information and have them submit their application! If we get enough interest in our community, we could start a Local Design Team as well. If you are interested in the Parents’ FAQs, please contact Arielle Hendel at arielle@jvalley.org or (408) 357-7501.

The Jewish family has always been at the core of Jewish practice and observance, second only to the community. Both the family and the community, in the form of the synagogue, Jewish Community Centers and other Jewish institutions, are at the center of Jewish life today. The goals are still the same – creating strong and loving Jewish families, committed to the Jewish life of their communities and beyond. However, there are new twists that require some new ways of thinking and acting. Rarely do adult children settle down in the same location as their parents. College choice, online dating, and the global job market, to name a few, result in children literally “leaving the nest.” As they have children we see the common emergence of the long-distance grandparent. There has also been a dramatic increase in Jewish intermarriage, another newer twist on being a grandparent. Much research and many books have been written on these topics. Putting that aside, many of us and our friends are dealing with these challenges. Two local couple’s stories of grand-parenting speak to all of them. Naomi and David Kalmus, Saratoga, are the proud grandparents of Ryan, 2 years old. Ryan, their daughter Lisa, and son-in-law Jared reside in Stamford, CT. They travel to CT every two months to spend quality time with Ryan and his parents. Naomi desires a strong relationship with her grandson and to foster a deep sense of family. Technology also helps as they FaceTime on their computers with Ryan weekly. Reading Jewish books and lighting the Chanukah menorah are also regular practices, giving Ryan the sense of Jewish tradition through the generations. Naomi kvells at seeing her daughter now a mother. She observes that Lisa’s transition to motherhood was very smooth, and Lisa is a much calmer parent than Naomi was! Ryan is old enough to recognize his grandparents, and Naomi looks forward to deepening their relationship as Ryan gets older. Gail and Jack Long, Los Gatos, have two granddaughters, Navah, 7, and Molly, 3. They are also not local, but still drivable – they and their mother, Rebecca, and son-in-law, Steve, live in Santa Clarita, CA. Gail and Jack have a small apartment nearby, and are there one week every month. Gail is looking to duplicate the very close and personal relationship her mother had with her daughters. Gail’s grown daughters are very close, and Gail would like foster that in her two grandchildren as well. Gail loves that every trip south involves taking Navah to have their nails done, and then to a tea house for a formal afternoon tea, where they have great conversations. Trips to the park and the zoo are regular outings with the younger Molly. The Longs have affiliated with a local synagogue in Santa Clarita, where Navah is now an enthusiastic religious school student. Congregation Shir Hadash, 20 Cherry Blossom Lane, Los Gatos, extends a warm invitation to the community to attend Grandperson & Me in the Sukkah on Monday,September 28, 10-10:30 a.m. Children, ages 0 to 6, are invited to bring their grandparent(s) or grandfriend(s) to join Rabbi Aron, Cantor Felder-Levy and Robin Adelman for a Sukkot service, activity time and snacks in Congregation Shir Hadash’s Sukkah. If you don’t have a grandparent locally, you are still welcome. Parents can join us, too. Please RSVP to Robin at robin@shirhadash.org or (408) 358-1751.

l cal news Beth David adopts voluntary dues model By Jeff Warwick and Rabbi Leslie Alexander It doesn’t matter how old or young you are, if you are Jewish, you have heard, and probably believe the refrain “synagogues are always asking for money” and “you have to pay to be Jewish.” It is a stereotype of synagogue life that has spanned several generations. The “it’s all about money” excuse for refraining to participate in synagogues isn’t really as true nowadays, as synagogues almost always make financial arrangements with people who want to come but can’t afford membership. Yet, there has been an element of truth to these notions. The truth isn’t evil or underhanded; after all, money is necessary to keep synagogue doors open, but none the less, the stereotype persists. Recently, synagogues across America have been eliminating charging required dues, where people had to ask permission to pay less than the set rate. Instead, dues are seen as a voluntary contribution to support the synagogue, perhaps with a suggested amount. The first synagogue to use this contribution model was in the Woodstock Area Jewish Congregation, in Woodstock, Vermont. Since they opened their doors in 1988, they have never charged set dues and they have existed successfully. In 2009, only six congregations used this model. In 2010 through mid-2014, at least fifteen more congregations adopted this model. In mid-2015, The New York Times reported that thirty congregations are now using this model. It is clear that a new way of looking at synagogue membership fees is emerging. Rabbi Dan Judson of Hebrew College Rabbinical School calls the synagogues adopting this new model “Free Will Congregations.” Barry Mael of United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism calls this new type of synagogue membership a “sustaining number dues model.” What that means is that a synagogue tells members and prospective members an amount per member that would sustain the synagogue community, to keep the synagogue functioning in a vibrant way. And that’s it! The member then pledges any amount he or she wants to the synagogue for that year. No one in synagogue administration or the board is contacted for permission, no synagogue financial official meets with the congregant who may be seeking reduced dues. No one is ever embarrassed or challenged. The wonderful thing is that in practically all of the synagogues that have opted for a sustaining model, the longtime and new congregants have responded very positively to choice and have stepped up to support the life of the synagogue in significant ways, some much beyond the sustaining number. In our South Bay area, last fall Congregation Beth David in

Saratoga adopted a membership promotion, mimicking the contribution model. Then, on July 1, 2015, Congregation Beth David eliminated required dues for all congregants and initiated a sustaining number model. Congregation Beth David’s letter to congregants read “the congregation expressly entrusts each and every congregant with the responsibility of sustaining our synagogue. Sustaining the synagogue becomes a choice of tzedaka, instead of a bill. The board, the finance committee and the rabbis place their confidence directly in your hands to sufficiently support the community. Our congregants have been unwavering in their support of our synagogue and synagogue life; we have no doubt that we can rely on this dedication.” Initial results are similar to other congregations that have adopted this model, with increased membership, and pledges for contributions that already exceed the amount collected in dues the prior year. We all know that people decide to join or not join synagogues for many reasons; money should not be one of those reasons. Today, many people hesitate to label themselves or affiliate with groups. Community means something different to many younger adults than it once meant to their parents and grandparents. Numerous Jews of all generations may sometimes feel uncomfortable or embarrassed when entering a synagogue if they aren’t familiar with liturgy or ritual or the people inside, even if they also have a desire to discover what it means to be Jewish and to broaden that identity. Congregations around the country, including Congregation Beth David in Saratoga, want members and seekers alike to find an open door, trust, and respect. They hope that they can help Jews to feel wanted and needed by their community even if they have questions, doubts and feel disaffected. One way to convey that message is to lower financial barriers and with that, to also lower barriers on other ways of engaging as well. Fortunately, it is no longer necessary to be “all about the money” to ensure the vibrancy of synagogues. As a matter of fact, it may be stepping away from that focus that will ensure the success of communities all around the country and imbue them with a sense of possibility, optimism and creativity in the future. Congregation Beth David is located at 19700 Prospect Rd. Saratoga, CA 95070. For more information: www.beth-david.org, (408) 257-3333.

Theatre Chevruta to perform Arthur Miller’s Broken Glass By Doug Brook Theatre Chevruta – A Jewish Readers Theatre begins its third season at the APJCC with a rarely performed Arthur Miller play, Broken Glass. This later play by the writer of Death of a Salesman, The Crucible, All My Sons, and countless other contemporary classics, will be performed on Saturday, October 17 at 7 p.m., and Sunday, October 18 at 2 p.m. As always, the popular audience talkbacks with the cast and staff will occur after each performance. Theatre Chevruta will also perform the updated stage version of The Diary of Anne Frank in early April. Broken Glass is one of Miller’s final plays. It premiered in 1994, and originally starred Ron Silver, Ron Rifkin, Frances Conroy, and Amy Irving. It soon became a television movie starring Mandy Patinkin and Elizabeth McGovern. “Broken Glass explores assimilation and the dynamics of a Jewish family with differing relationships to their Judaism,” says artistic director Doug Brook. Set in the 1930s, a vibrant woman is mysteriously paralyzed and devastated by news from Europe about Kristallnacht. Her husband is far less comfortable with his Jewish heritage and grapples with how to fit in to the worlds he occupies at home and in business. “It’s a recently written look at an earlier generation struggling with some of the same issues that many people, and families, face today,” says Brook. Theatre Chevruta’s third season rides the momentum of last May’s very popular performances of My Name is Asher Lev. Attendance and audience response were at an all-time high. “We couldn’t be happier about how much people got out of it,” says Brook. “People have come to me in the months since to talk about story details, debate who was right and wrong, relate how they reread the novel, and even adopted some words and Shabbat dinner practices from the play.”

Not sure what staged readings are like? Watch the brief video available on Theatre Chevruta’s page on the APJCC website, www.apjcc.org. See for yourself just how funny, dramatic, and entertaining they can be. Since its founding, Theatre Chevruta has filled a unique place in the local theatre community. In just two years, it has already performed a rarely-seen version of the timeless story of Tevya, one of the most infamous plays from the once-dominant age of Yiddish theatre, a world premiere biblical satire, and a recent adaptation of a classic Jewish novel. “When Theatre Chevruta started,” says Brook, “we wanted to provide something you don’t get elsewhere. Worthy plays that don’t get their due in the mainstream. Something entertaining for those who want just entertainment, but also with deeper layers for those who seek them.” Brook, a longtime director and actor in the local theatre community, is also Executive Director of Silicon Valley Shakespeare. “It’s gratifying to see the mix of people we get here at Theatre Chevruta, in our audience and on our stage. People from the JCC community, the local theatre community, and beyond.” Auditions for The Diary of Anne Frank will be announced later in the fall. Theatre Chevruta will perform the version of the play updated in the late 1990s, based on the less abridged version of the diary that had been released a few years earlier. For all Theatre Chevruta news, including updates related to Broken Glass and Anne Frank, visit http://svjcc.org/jplace and click on Theatre Chevruta. Also, see the latest by following Theatre Chevruta on Facebook at http://facebook.com/theatre. chevruta. For more information, contact APJCC Cultural Arts Program Administrator Emily Somma at emily@svjcc.org or (408) 357-7492.

Theatre Chevruta performs fully-rehearsed staged readings, much like the New Works Festival at TheatreWorks and offerings at other local theatres such as City Lights Theatre in San Jose, for whom Brook has directed numerous readings.

Israeli singing sensation David Broza to appear at SVJFF opening night As it enters its 24rd year, the Silicon Valley Jewish Film Festival (www.svjff.org) is moving to a new centrally-located theater in the South Bay, announced Executive Director Tzvia Shelef. “The Festival is very excited to be offering movies and events for two weeks at the AMC Saratoga 14 in the El Paseo de Saratoga Shopping Center,” she said. The AMC Saratoga 14 offers comfortable seating, easy parking and access to numerous closeby restaurants. The Festival will also continue to offer films and events for two weeks at the Oshman Family JCC (OFJCC) in Palo Alto, including exciting Opening and Closing Night events. At the AMC Theater, movies will be shown on Saturday evenings, Sunday afternoons and evenings, as well as screenings MondayThursday, October 17-October 29. It is still possible to become a Patron Donor of the Festival, and your benefits will include early seating and may include tickets to special events, including Opening and Closing night tickets at some Patron levels. Visit www.svjff.org/securedonation/ or call (408) 498-0904 for more information. The excitement of the 24th Annual Festival begins Opening Night, Saturday, October 10, at the OFJCC with a special appearance by David Broza, one of the most well-known Israeli superstar recording artists. Broza, who appears in the Opening Night film, “East Jerusalem West Jerusalem” will perform and speak about the movie. His charismatic and energetic performances have brought to worldwide audiences a fusion of music from three different countries: Israel, Spain, and England. He has entertained at concert halls around the world with guitar playing that ranges from flamenco-flavored rhythmic and percussive techniques, to whirlwind finger picking, to a signature rock’n’roll sound. The Centerpiece Event will be held Sunday, October 25 at 3 p.m. at the AMC Saratoga 14 with the screening of “Above and Beyond.” In 1948, a group of World War II pilots, mostly from America, volunteered to fight for Israel in the War of Independence. This ragtag band of brothers turned the tide of the war and laid the groundwork for the Israeli Air Force. Roberta Grossman, the film’s director, will be present to speak about the making of the film and this amazing group of men. The Festival concludes November 8 at the OFJCC with the movie, “The Outrageous Sophie Tucker!” Six-time Emmy awardwinning comedy writer Bruce Vilanch, along with the film’s producers, will provide insights into this provocative film. The 24th Annual Festival EAST JERUSALEM includes more than 35 WEST JERUSALEM film screenings, from documentaries that inform to features that both entertain and inspire. Tickets are now on-line and can be purchased from www. svjff.org. Here is a preview of just some of the many highly-rated films of Jewish interest from the United States, Israel, and other countries. Disney, sushi, tequila – oh my! By Rabbi Leslie Alexander One of the most important things about belonging to a synagogue community is feeling connected to the people who are there, of recognizing folks and feeling a sense of contentment when you walk through the doors, of being missed when you can’t make it. We know that shul or Temple is about learning and prayer and connecting with the One who created us, but the name of synagogue is Beit Knesset, a house of gathering. One of the issues in synagogues mirrors a societal reality: people almost always socialize with their peers; they often don’t know any of the people who aren’t in their age group. In this kind of socializing they may miss connecting with a kindred spirit who just happens to be 30 years older or younger than they are. At Congregation Beth David in this last year, the community has worked hard to enhance community enthusiasm for their shul based on bringing folks together intergenerationally, share commonalities and to realize that a synagogue is meant to bond people together beyond our “demographic.” On July 12 Beth David offered CBD@Homes, something new that the synagogue hopes will lead to a continued fun connection between congregants in ways that they didn’t ever expect. CBD@Homes was an evening for congregants in seven different homes of members. These events happened at exactly the same time and Beth David members chose where to go based on what they love. An exceptional committee chaired by Barb Green put together beyond wonderful experiences in each location. People who love Disney, Israel, Italy, Sushi, Chocolate, Hawaii, and Bar B Que and Bourbon (Tequilla, too) signed up to enjoy congenial company, activities, amazing food and drink together with a goal of meeting new people who share interests. For instance the Disney evening, at the home of Debby and David Hoffman offered a talk by Scott Nathanson, a former Disney Imagineer who helped design the Disney park in Hong Kong, dinner of Disney favorites including gumbo, Disney pin trading, themed drinks (poison apple martini anyone) and more. Those at the home of Sue and Ron Maltiel entered a Hawaiian Paradise including tropical drinks, a hula performance and class and a sumptuous luau – minus the roast pig, of course! 225 people attended the event which also had a special location, dinner, babysitting and a myriad of activities for kids, so parents could just go and have a good time together.

l cal news Kever Avot services set for September 20 From the Cantors and Rabbis Association of Greater San JoseCRAGSJ Each year between Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur, time is taken to remember those members of our family and community who have died, either recently or in years past. The holidays bring up many feelings and the absence of loved ones can be felt more acutely at this time of year. Temple Emanu-El and Congregations Beth David, Shir Hadash, and Sinai jointly sponsor these services which are free and open to the entire community. The custom of visiting the graves of deceased parents (thus Kever Avot, the graves of our fathers), either during the month of Elul or during the days between the High Holy Days, is of longstanding within the Jewish community. It is often traced back to Jacob’s having buried Rachel on the way to Ephrath near Bethlehem, so that she could later pray for her children, the people of Israel, as they passed by her grave on the way to Babylonian Exile (Jeremiah 31:15) and to Caleb who we are told in the Talmud, took time during his scouting out the land, to visit the graves of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs in Hebron. In our community special services will be held at both Jewish cemeteries, Shalom Gardens in the Los Gatos Memorial Park, 2255 Los Gatos Almaden Road, and Home of Peace, at Oak Hill Memorial Park, 300 Curtner Avenue, San Jose. Rabbis Aron and Berkenwald will officiate together at Shalom Gardens while Rabbis Magat and Ohriner will officiate at Oak Hill Memorial Chapel and then make separate visits to Shalom Gardens and Beth David Memorial park. The Services will begin at 1 p.m. and conclude by approximately 2 p.m.

While there was incredible creativity at each location, the most significant aspect of CBD@Homes is that everyone reported meeting and engaging with people they never knew before and wanting to get together again. Who knows, one day you may see a CBD intergenerational group together on a tour of Tuscany, enjoying sustainable chocolate at a local cafe, together at a Yom HaAtzmaut celebration or wearing those iconic ears on a ride at Disneyland. Connecting as synagogue members or guests through what they love just adds an additional dimension to the definition of synagogue community, one that we all need as we seek meaning and fulfillment in Jewish life. l cal news Need cash for conventions? By Arielle Hendel There are many teens who want to go to a youth program convention, but are constrained by financial burdens. As part of the JValley Generator grants, the Federation awarded a $10,000 grant to our community’s Jewish youth/ teen groups, specifically NIFTY, USY and BBYO. Eligible teens can receive up to $300 for local conferences and up to $600 for national conventions. Application forms for this Teen Leadership grant can be found at www.jvalley.org. Adult advisors and/or Rabbis can nominate up to two teen leaders from their respective programs. The teens will be:

- One identified emerging leader (8th-10th grade)

- One current leader stepping into an executive leadership role (11th-12th grade) The nominated teens will be asked to submit a written (300-400 words) or video (2-3 minutes) essay answering one of these prompts: -Where do they think the Jewish world is heading? -What is the biggest challenge for the Jewish community? -Whose Jewish leadership style do they admire most and why? Awards will be made based on cohesiveness of the essay and the points of view do not need to match or represent any particular movement or ideology. Any questions, please contact Arielle Hendel at arielle@jvalley.org or (408) 357-7501.

Fall internship opportunity at Jewish Family Services By Mindy Berkowitz Following our successful summer internship program, Jewish Family Services of Silicon Valley has an internship opportunity for a college student or recent graduate interested in non-profit management, volunteer engagement, and social media. JFS SV is seeking an intern to work in supporting the Coordinator of Volunteer Engagement. The intern will help develop JFS SV’s new Young Adults Volunteer Initiative Program for 21-39 year olds as well as coordinate our wildly successful Embrace-AFamily program. Applicants should be great team players, have social media and communications experience, and be able to assist in organizing events. The internship is 15 hours per week at JFS offices through December 2015 at the Levy Family Campus in Los Gatos. (There will be an opportunity to extend the internship into 2016.) Work will be during typical business hours with some evening and weekends. Contact Lori Cinnamon, Coordinator of Volunteer Engagement at (408) 357-7467 or loric@jfssv.org.

Local ritual director and educator Barbara Biran embarks on new fellowship opportunity The Good People Fund, a non-profit, tzedakah initiative deeply rooted in the work of tikkun olam in the US and Israel, welcomes Barbara Biran, ritual director and educator at Congregation Beth David, to a new fellowship program. This will mark the first partnership between the Good People Fund and the national education consortium NewCAJE. Biran will join four other Jewish educators, who together will spend a year focused on merging Jewish education strategies with service-learning and social action tactics. “Through a targeted year-long program, this new fellowship opportunity was created to enhance and support the work of Jewish educators who, like Biran, are focused on service-learning, tzedakah or social action content in their settings,” explains Robyn Faintich, The Good People Fund’s education consultant. “We are looking forward to combining the launch of the fellowship with the annual NewCAJE conference, which took place early August in Hartford, Connecticut, which emphasized the sharing of information, learning new Jewish education techniques, and sharing problem solutions.” Biran is an ideal fellow for the program. She is the ritual director at Congregation Beth David, and an educator in the religious school. Biran believes highly in the value of lifelong giving, not only money but also time and resources. As an educator she is constantly looking for new teaching ideas and utilizing a curriculum that involves more experiential/non-frontal based teaching to demonstrate examples of tzedakah and social action. Biran and the other fellows will take part in a series of sessions led by Faintich and Rabbi Steven Bayar that will focus on the building blocks of service-learning and goals, as well as strategies of volunteerism and social action. Additional sessions focus on the Good People Fund Grab ‘n’ Go Lessons — modular curriculum guides, which provide educators with an all-encompassing lesson including everything from set induction activities to text study to hands-on application. The Grab ‘n’ Go Lessons are each centered on a Good People Fund grantee and the passionate work they do to improve the world. The lessons are designed so educators can easily adapt them for a variety of learning settings. Fellows will utilize these and other Good People Fund education tools through the year. Following the conference, the fellowship will continue through a series of webbased meetings. Founded in 2008, The Good People Fund, inspired by the concept of tikkun olam (repairing the world), responds to significant problems such as poverty, disability, trauma and social isolation, primarily in the United States and Israel. For more information on The Good People Fund visit www.goodpeoplefund.org. NewCAJE is a pluralistic organization that brings together all settings of Jewish education; welcomes anyone involved in the transmission of Jewish culture, custom and belief; includes people in all job descriptions in the field including both professional and lay leaders; advocates for Jewish education and for Jewish teachers; and is a forum where new ideas are explored, new talent welcomed, and a multitude of ideas and resources shared. More information on NewCAJE can be found at www.newcaje.org.

Kevin cherished his happy home and loved his young family dearly. A blood drive in Kevin’s memory will take place at Congregation Shir Hadash on October 18 in the sanctuary.
