Make the Best of Your Children’s Free Time Toveedo. The popular streaming platform that offers hundreds of Torahbased entertainment for boys and girls of all ages and interests. In a day and age where secular children’s videos are no longer the safe place it used to be, Toveedo. com prides itself as being the leader in Kosher video entertainment for children. As one subscriber recently described, “what made me take the plunge was because I really wanted my son to be watching age appropriate content that incorporates Yiddishkeit, and with the shows available to me now, I have to keep skipping things.” Incredible 3D animation, Live-Action films and much more are all on the Toveedo streaming platform. Want to see more without taking the plunge? Toveedo.com will be airing 4 free shows on Motzei Shabbos starting December

30. With the long winter nights, many parents and children are looking for quality entertainment in the comfort of their homes. Special guests will include illusionist Shlomo Levinger, hilariously funny ventriloquist Yisroel Silverstein, crafts with Mushky Avton and of course the fantastic science show with Dr. Schnitzel. New episodes from the popular Toodaloo series and top quality 3-D animated show, The Secret Room will be aired as well. Interspersed will be footage and interviews from our very own Toveedo Stars! So why do a Motzei Shabbos Live show? Many years ago, Chaim Hershkowitz of Toveedo, used to host a Motzei Shabbos radio show and the feedback he received back then, always stuck with him. “I grew up listening to Country Yossi on Motzei Shabbos, and it was a highlight of our week”.

Chaim explains ” When I stopped doing the radio show, I knew I always wanted to get back into it in some capacity. Toveedo is definitely a part of the long Motzei Shabbsim, and we wanted to do something extra for our subscribers. We also wanted to give parents and children who are not yet subscribers, a taste of some of the amazing videos that we offer with a free live show.” It will definitely be something the kids remember, so Tune in on December 30, January 6, January 13 and January 30 for an unbelievable show beginning at 7:00pm. Show will be streaming exclusively on Toveedo and will be free to watch. Toveedo can be watched on Toveedo.com Toveedo can also be downloaded on Smart TV’s such as: Roku TV, Apple TV and Apple TV

COMMUNITY NEWS

Project Twenty Four: Rebuilding Lives, Building Hope In the Heart of Broward County’s Orthodox Jewish community a powerful initiative is set to take center stage on Monday, December 25, 2023 at 10 am. Bubu (Ron) and Daniel, survivors of the October 7th attack in Israel, will share their inspiring journey of rebuilding and healing through Project Twenty Four. Bubu, once an Israeli farmer, found himself fighting for his life on that fateful day in October. Since then, he and his lifelong friend Daniel have been actively engaged in rebuilding and healing their community, not only in Israel but also reaching out globally. Project Twenty Four: Healing Through Strength, Support, and Contribution The founders of Project Twenty Four, Bubu and Daniel, are set to address the Young Israel of HollywoodFt. Lauderdale community, offering insights on how communities can come together to support individuals, families, children, business owners, and entire communities affected by traumatic events. This transformative project, grounded in three core principles empowering individuals through their strengths, promoting mutual support, and involving everyone in meaningful contributions - aims to initiate projects that heal and rebuild lives in the P 1 8 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . aftermath of the October 7th attack on Israel. The start of Project Twenty Four occurred when Tzuf, a 19-year-old teenager with Autism, was displaced from his home after the terror attack. His daily routine, centered around building with Lego, was disrupted, causing immense distress. Project Twenty Four stepped in, connecting with local businesses like Funky Monkey, to provide Tzuf with a new Lego set and then expanded their efforts to bring Hanukkah gifts to kibbutz children. From Local Toy Store to Global Impact: A Chain of Positive Change Jared, the owner of Funky Monkey, initiated a ripple effect within his Scarsdale Jewish community. Parents and children came together to purchase, wrap, and personalize Chanukah greetings for kibbutz children, fostering a sense of global community and solidarity. Project Twenty Four now stands as a beacon, calling on everyone to contribute and create positive change together. It emphasizes that the power for change is within each of us - Project Twenty Four: It’s Within Us. A Worldwide Movement for Empowerment and Change Project Twenty Four is not just a local initiative but an opportunity

for Israelis and Jews worldwide to unite. By leveraging skills, expertise, connections, and know-how, the project addresses the real-life needs of those affected by the October 7th massacre. Together, they are creating a life-forward movement, constantly engaging with impacted communities, listening to their needs, and initiating projects for tangible and real impact. Join the Global Community of Doers Project Twenty Four invites everyone to join their worldwide community of doers with the shared goal of empowering the Jewish community globally. As a non-profit organization, they actively work on impactful projects, foster connections, and make a positive difference in the lives of those affected by adversity. On Monday, December 25, 2023, at 10 am, Young Israel of HollywoodFt. Lauderdale will host Bubu and Daniel, inviting the community to be a part of this inspiring movement Project Twenty Four: Rebuilding Lives, Building Hope. Hebrew Academy Miami’s GrowTorah Class Cultivates Connections Between Torah and Nature In the recent weeks of the GrowTorah class at Hebrew Academy Miami, led by Mrs. Perla Salver, students have been exploring the intersection of gardening and Torah teachings. Amidst discussions on various Mitzvot and laws related to farming and planting, students delved into the narrative of Gan Eden—the very first garden in the Torah, described as a place of beauty, peace, and life. Inspired by this connection, students took part in painting the planters that will give life to the Hebrew Academy’s inaugural elementary community garden. Engaging in brainstorming sessions, they

P 2 0 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

sketched garden plans and articulated their visions and goals for the space. Following this planning stage, the practical aspects of gardening then unfolded. Juniper oil was carefully applied, liners were measured and placed, and the soil then carefully leveled. Students in grades K-5 not only gained insights into the diverse components of soil, but also learned about the life cycle of plants and embraced the values of teamwork and collaboration. A significant milestone was achieved as students planted their first crop: celery/ karpas!

GrowTorah is dedicated to developing experiential and environmentally-focused Torah education programs for Jewish institutions. Hebrew Academy Miami is an exceptional Jewish day school dedicated to nurturing students from early childhood through Grade 12, inspiring them through Torah to develop our future Jewish leaders. Anshei Chesed Congregation of Boynton Beach welcomed two new Torahs on Sunday December 17.

Especially at this time, we need each other, we need our tefillos, and we need to sing through the night - and Torah Academy of Boca Raton did it all at this year’s 9th Annual Chanukah Concert! Joey Newcomb, Baruch Levine, and Eitan Katz lit up the stage, with our Torah Academy Boys Choir amplifying the heartfelt music with their talent! Special thanks to Mrs. Linda Love Golden and all our sponsors, our VIP Dinner guests, and the huge crowd of TABR family that came together to celebrate Chanukah, chinuch, and the chashivus haTorah at the center of it all.

Young Israel of Hollywood-Ft. Lauderdale Brotherhood’s Annual Chanukah Texas Hold’Em Charity Poker Tournament was held Wednesday, December 13, 2023. The night started with pizza, pasta, eggplant parmesan, and salads sponsored from Lenny’s Pizza. Beverages were sponsored by Primo Liquors. 48 players were seated to enjoy playing poker. Before play started, everyone was treated to a d’var Torah from Rabbi Weinstock, Senior Rabbi. Players enjoyed wine at the tables sponsored by Jeff Simon. In under 2 and a half hours everyone was able to get to the final table. Last year’s second place finisher Jason Segelbaum had a strong night finishing on the bubble in 6th place with an honorable mention. Kobi “Shortstack” Berkson finished in 5th place. Ronen Zour finished in 4th place. The final 3 players decided to chop the pot based on the current chip stack allowing us to finish at just 3 hours. In 3rd, with 17% of the pot, was Ilya Chern. In 2nd (formerly in 1st), with 36% of the pot, was Josh Loberfeld. In first place, with 46% of the pot, was Aron Burger. The total pot was just shy of $4,000. There was also a TV sponsored by Active Trade (Aron Burger, Jeff Simon, Naftali Simon) and 4 hours on a boat with activities by Josh Einhorn. Thank you to all the sponsors! Yeshivat Torat Yosef children performed and participated in the 2nd annual Channukah Art Show. Each class explored a different modality of art and created tremendously creative and gorgeous paintings and Menorahs. DECEMBER 21, 2023 / P23

BUSINESS

I Referred My Competition and Won By Shalom Markman

I have an unexpected meeting scheduled for this week. It’s with a company that has no idea who I actually am but are nevertheless clawing for my time. I used to think that sales opportunities only come once we build up a trust factor with the businesses, we’re after. I’m wrong. I’m very wrong. Even if we do finally build up that trust factor, it’s highly unlikely that our popularity will lead to a weekend 12:00 AM meeting request. A newly acquired company has been hired as a contractor by a Fortune 500 company to interact with its customers. They’ve tried multiple integrations to receive those customer payments, but to no avail. Three months into this acquisition, they are pulling their hair out. So much so that they decided to take their frustration to a very public platform, LinkedIn. Someone I don’t know firsthand, suggested they talk to me and tagged me. Their frustrations where now in my feed. There are many approaches one can take in such a scenario as the one called P 3 2 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

upon. In this public forum, I had one goal. Piggyback off that referral and further cement an authority. I tried something clever, and it saw instant results. The first step was to drop the commission breath. A prospect can tell when we’re just out for the sale and solely thinking about ourselves. It’s a turn off. So how can we drop our excitement while creating an awe of authority? I decided to mention my competition as a possible solution for them too. What? Really? Yes! Instead of taking on the role of trying to simply sell them my product, I decided to take on the role of a consultant. I publicly talked about two competitors of mine, and only after mentioned that “I’m biased so how can I not mention my company too?” I publicly talked about a few common scenarios that my new prospect might be dealing with and invited them to a private chat. They bit thirty seconds later. By the time you’re reading this article, we met too. There are two lessons I’d like to share

though I’m sure we can find more. One, make sure that others around you know your value. They are often not your potential clients. However, they have circles of their own. No need to sell to them. Instead, help them understand your own value every so often. It’ll work its own magic. Two, selling doesn’t have to be about coming in guns blazing to convince the other. A true salesman is comfortable suggesting other solutions if it so suits the prospect. Your now future customer will better understand that you also have their own interests in mind. Very soon, you’ll have the liberty of turning down 12:00 AM weekend meetings. Shalom Markman started selling merchant services by door knocking in NYC. He currently lives in Norfolk VA with his family and visits Florida when he gets hungry or brings on a new client. You can find him on LinkedIn.

REAL ESTATE

Buyer’s Remorse and Beyond: The Consequences of Impulse Spending By Shmuel Shayowitz The holiday season, marked by the frenzied shopping extravaganzas of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, has become a hallmark of American consumerism. It’s a time when retailers promise unbeatable deals, and shoppers line up in droves to snag the best bargains. But beneath the excitement and discounts lies a harsh reality: Black Friday and Cyber Monday have morphed into a shopping scam, where retailers rarely offer genuine discounts, and consumers are lured into spending money they don’t have on items they often don’t need. Black Friday, the day following Thanksgiving, has a long history that dates back to the 1930s. It is believed by many that the term Black Friday originated from the concept that businesses operate at a financial loss, or are “in the red,” until the day after Thanksgiving, when massive sales finally allow them to turn a profit, or put them “in the black.” However, this is untrue. Originally, the term was used to describe the chaotic and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic that occurred after Thanksgiving parades in Philadelphia. The huge crowds created a headache for the police, who worked longer shifts than usual as they dealt with traffic jams, accidents, shoplifting, and other issues. It wasn’t until the 1960s that retailers began to associate it with the start of the holiday shopping season. In the early days of Black Friday, shoppers could genuinely find remarkable deals. Retailers would offer significant discounts to attract customers and clear out inventory. However, as the years passed, the meaning of “discount” began to shift. Retailers found clever ways to manipulate prices, creating the illusion of massive savings. Today, many Black Friday deals are not as they seem. Retailers often mark up P 3 6 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

prices in the weeks leading up to the shopping event, only to offer what appears to be deep discounts on Black Friday. In reality, these “discounted” prices are often higher than the original prices before the price hike. With the advent of e-commerce, Cyber Monday was born in the mid-2000s as the online counterpart to Black Friday. Online retailers promised exclusive deals and discounts, and consumers eagerly embraced the convenience of shopping from their screens. However, just like its predecessor, Cyber Monday has fallen victim to deceptive pricing tactics. Retailers employ tactics such as “dynamic pricing,” where online prices change based on demand and browsing history. This means that consumers may not see the same prices as others, leading to a sense of urgency to make a purchase. Additionally, the rise of “doorbusters” and limited-time offers often creates a sense of scarcity, compelling shoppers to buy quickly without considering whether they truly need the items. Retailers capitalize on this “fomo” (fear of missing out) tactic to boost sales. This year, Black Friday and Cyber Monday saw a surge in the use of Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) services, allowing consumers to make purchases with deferred payments. While these services offer convenience, they also encourage impulse buying and can lead to financial strain. There are reports that BNPL may have gone up by as much as 83% from last year. Consumers may not realize the true cost of their purchases until it’s too late, with interest and fees accumulating over time. In a world where conspicuous consumption often reigns supreme, it’s easy for consumers to fall into the trap of spending money they don’t

have on items they don’t need. The holiday season, once a time for reflection and gratitude, has become an exercise in excess. Many shoppers emerge from the holiday season with depleted bank accounts, steep credit card debt, and a sense of buyer’s remorse. As Black Friday and Cyber Monday continue to evolve into massive shopping spectacles, it’s critical for consumers to exercise caution and mindfulness. True savings come not from scoring the biggest discount but from making informed, intentional purchases. It’s time for consumers to reclaim the shopping season by embracing conscious consumerism and resisting the allure of excessive spending. After all, genuine savings and financial well-being are worth more than any discounted item.

FOOD

OSSO BUCO OF BEEF WITH SUN DRIED TOMATOES By Jamie Geller 4 SERVINGS Derived from the recipe featured on the television show “Sopranos,” this dish takes a substantial amount of prep time and effort, but it sure is worthwhile for that special occasion!

PREPARATION

INGREDIENTS • 4 large veal shanks, about 1 to 1/14 pounds each • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, for dredging • 1 cup olive oil • 1 large yellow onion, diced • 6 ribs celery, cleaned and diced • 4 carrots, diced • 1/2 cup dry red wine • 1/2 cup minced fresh basil, plus additional for garnish • 2 cup chicken broth • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Lightly dust veal shanks with flour, shaking off excess. Heat oil in a large sauté pan over medium-high flame. Add veal shanks and brown well, 2 to 3 minutes on each side and on edges. Remove shanks and place in a heavy, ovenproof pan or roasting pan. Drain part of oil from sauté pan, leaving about 1/3 cup. Reduce flame to medium and add onions, celery and carrots. Cook and stir vegetables until softened, 6 to 7 minutes. Add wine and basil, increase flame to high, bring to a boil, then pour over veal shanks. Add chicken broth and, if needed, water to roasting pan to reach about halfway up the shanks. Cover the pan and place in preheated oven and roast shanks for 30 minutes, then reduce heat to 325 and cook for about 2 more hours. If there is too much liquid, uncover for the final 30 minutes. Once cooked, transfer shanks to a serving dish and cover to keep warm. Place roasting pan over a high flame and bring juices to a boil until slightly thickened. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Spoon sauce over each veal shank and serve with pasta or risotto and more of the sauce. Garnish with basil. Optional Gremolata topping: Combine 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest, 2 tablespoons minced, fresh flat-leaf parsley and 2 or 3 cloves of garlic, finely minced. Stir the sauce in the pan at the end, after cooking is finished, and baste meat. Jamie Geller is the Chief Media and Marketing Officer at Aish.
