Learn in a High-Level Beit Midrash While Earning a YU Degree in Partnership with Top Israeli Universities Launching in Fall 2024, The YU in Israel program features yearly tuition of only $17,500.

YU in Israel combines the rich Yeshiva University beit midrash environment with a specially designed curriculum between Yeshiva University and Tel Aviv University (TAU) or Bar-Ilan University (BIU). The new Yeshiva University in Israel program earns students one of two YU degrees that prepare them to enter an evermore-competitive global job market and continue their Jewish learning in a substantial and serious manner. The rigorous coursework—taught in English—will complement YU’s world-class Torah studies, elite academics, rich student life and comprehensive student services.

The daily schedule will be based on YU’s signature model of Torah studies and academic classes, while campus life will be filled with cultural enrichment that will deepen connections with the land of Israel and engaging student activities and extracurricular programs, both during the week and on Shabbat.

“We are excited to offer this unique educational opportunity,” said Rabbi Dr. Ari Berman, President of Yeshiva University. “Especially at this moment in Jewish history, many of our incoming students prefer to continue their studies in Israel. This program provides a new portal of entry to Israel for the next generation who

are interested in top tier Torah study, excellent academics and a vibrant student life of living and studying in Israel”.

The academic curriculum is specifically designed for YU students in partnership with these acclaimed Israeli institutions. Through YU in Israel, students can earn a degree in Business while taking courses at TAU or a degree in Psychology and Multidisciplinary Jewish Studies with BIU.

The schedule includes one or two days a week on the BIU or TAU campus, online courses, and

Torah studies featuring classes in Tanach, Halacha, and Jewish thought, as well as a beit midrash option with chavruta learning, all at the Chorev campus. Women will live on a campus, set on a hillside overlooking the heart of Jerusalem. Students will have the opportunity to take Ulpan, explore Israel through educational trips and seminars, and gain access to the community of Yeshiva University Olim in Israel who will mentor them on how to develop their careers and integrate into Israeli society.

Additionally, the pioneering program features a remarkably attractive tuition requirement of only $17,500 for the year. The program is suitable for alumni of YU-affiliated seminary programs.

“The uniqueness of this program is that it provides women with an open and serious beit midrash with dynamic and comprehensive Torah learning throughout the day,” noted Rabbanit Shani Taragin, Women’s Torah Studies Rosh Beit Midrash. “Beginning with daily “morning seder,” Torah classes, “night seder,” and replete with phenomenal teachers, the YUI Beit Medrash will foster a vital passion and connection to Torat Hashem in Eretz Yisrael.”

Healing, hope, and resiliency - a mission for 22 teenagers of our fallen IDF

Israel Heart2Heart, whose program was created to offer healing to wounded IDF soldiers struggling with PTS through a mind, body, and soul approach, took on a new mission last week to restore hope to the children of the fallen IDF soldiers who are left behind. Despite the short notice and logistical difficulties to host due to the recent arson at their home base in South Florida, there was no question when approached about being involved in this unique mission trip that Israel Heart2Heart staff was all in!

by Mana, done with the Loving Mom’s organization. The night was filled excitement and the teens left with full bellies and full hearts from the beautiful reception they received.

With only two weeks’ notice, the trip was planned, and 22 teenage boys from 14-17 left on a 10-day adventure of a lifetime. This journey to South Florida promised to give this group of teens all the warmth Israel Heart 2 Heart & The Las Olas Chabad Jewish Community had to offer. From the moment the teens stepped off the plane, they were greeted with love. Families were holding signs welcoming them to South Florida, carrying candy and cheers of excitement. “It was incredible,” one teen remarked, “a total stranger spent 4 hours in traffic just greet us!” From there, the boys were taken to an incredible dinner at Fuego

The next day began with water tubing, which gave the group a real taste of life in South Florida. The sun shone as the teens zipped around the lake, flipping the tubes over and having a blast. How many people are in your family? One volunteer asked one of the teens making conversation, “Seven, six, seven, I’m not sure what the answer is anymore,” He responded with a sigh. From the outside, they appear to be like any other teenage boys, laughing, joking, and complaining about a five-minute time out. When you talk to them and get to know their stories though, you will quickly see that their lives are no longer those of innocent children but of young men forced into adulthood before their time.

Another local restaurant, Bowl’d in Boca, hosted lunch. The teens were greeted by a table full of food that they devoured with gusto as only teenage boys could. Our Israel Heart 2 Heart

Bubby, Marilyn Simon Weinberg and Kim Champion of the Boca Rotary Club joined the group for lunch. Bubby Weinberg showered them with gifts and extravagant desserts custom-made for them. From there, the group traveled to Xtreme Action Park, where they enjoyed laser tag, go-cart racing, arcades, and more, allowing them to get their energy out before the evening event.

Tuesday evening’s community event was a living and breathing example of everything the Jewish people have gone through. The event served as a painful reminder that in every generation, an enemy has risen to destroy the Jewish nation. Yet, somehow, the Jewish nation has continued to survive and thrive. Listening to these young men speak about their parents and the legacy they leave behind left the room in tears. Some of these teens have voluntarily put on kitat konanut (community security) uniforms in the absence of their fathers. “Who will protect

P.30 / TSFCOMMUNITYVOICE.COM COMMUNITY NEWS

my mom and my community now that my father is gone,” one of the teens shared. “I used to do security with my father in Sderot daily; now, after school, I use the skills he taught me and continue to patrol his route alone,” he continued. During the evening, the teens were given monetary gifts to spend on items they chose. One teen simply said, “My mom needs this money more than I” and packed it in his suitcase to bring home.

There was no denying the heaviness surrounding the community as these teens recounted what brought them on this unique mission trip. Rabbi Slavaticki retold a story he had heard the week previously about a hero from Otniel, who waved goodbye to his five children on October 7th and spent 14 hours in combat on Kibbutz Beeri. This incredible hero saved over a hundred people until he fell at the hands of terrorists hiding inside a Jewish home; he passed away in the arms of his brother. As the Rabbi finished the story and shared the final words of the dying soldier, you could see a young teen standing by, “he is talking about my father,” he whispered to the person next to him, mixed with both sorrow and pride.

Mixed in with the tears was a buzz of excitement as nearly two dozen local teenagers came to meet this incredible delegation. Together, both groups began to sing and dance, loudly proclaiming Am Yisroel Chai. The excitement and joy of the group of teenagers, standing together

unified was just as palpable as the feeling of grief earlier in the night. It was a roller coaster of emotions for everyone present. As the evening concluded, while the community enjoyed a full sushi and dessert bar from Naama Sushi & Jessica Abrams Bakery, the 22 teens were ecstatic to go on personal Ferrari rides organized by the South Florida Ferrari Club.

Wednesday was the final day of this incredible trip. During breakfast sponsored by Mizrachi Pizza, the Fort Lauderdale marine unit pulled up to the dock at the house where the teens were staying. The boys were shocked as they were taken out on boats by the Fort Lauderdale Police Department through the intercoastal. Knowing that so many of these young teens lost their parents in uniform and watching the positive interaction between these law enforcement officers and the teens was incredibly moving to everyone involved. While everyone wanted to stay out on the water longer, it was time to pack and head back. The boys were taken shopping and then had lunch by Hadekel, followed by a quick trip to the Jazwares warehouse where they met with Judd & Laura Zebersky, the CEO of the company, and received valuable tips for life and were given gifts to bring home for them and their families. While at Jazwares, the teens also had the honor of meeting with Jimmy Patronis, the CFO of the State of Florida. They got to hear firsthand what the State of Florida is doing to Florida has done to support

Israel by purchasing over 250 million dollars in Israel bonds.

The mission of Israel Heart 2 Heart remains unchanged. The organization will continue to support the brave IDF soldiers who are struggling with PTS as a result of their service, and their work is needed now more than ever before. The ability, however, to bring hope and healing to the children of our fallen soldiers “was an honor and a privilege,” Nechama Gutman, a team member at Israel Heart 2 Heart, remarked. As these 22 brave teens return home from their whirlwind journey, they carry with them memories and a profound sense of purpose. Their laughter, tears, and shared experiences have woven a tapestry of resilience, unity, and hope. Through the highs and lows of this transformative trip, we pray that they have realized that they are not just the children of fallen heroes but also integral parts of the strength of the Jewish Nation. As they continue on their journeys through life, may they always find comfort in knowing that no matter where they go they have the unwavering support of the Israel Heart 2 Heart Family and Las Olas Chabad Jewish Center Community behind them.

H3 Florida Business Halacha Summit

Over 400 businessmen and rabbanim from across the South Florida gathered at the JW Marriott Tunberry in Aventura, Florida on April 4th for the inaugural H3 Florida Business Halacha Summit. This project of Agudath Israel of Illinois is quickly becoming one of the most popular destinations for bnei torah in the business world, where they can gain knowledge of halacha, clarity in hashkafa and chizuk in hanhagah for elevated excellence in the workplace.

The event presenters included leading poskim and well-known businessmen, all sharing the common goal of providing proper halachic information and guidance as well as inspiring the attendees to continue improving their integrity in business. The rabbonim spoke about timely topics and answered the questions facing many of the participants while the baalei batim shared personal

experiences and perspectives. The sessions were relatable, informative, and relevant, and during the breaks and first-class meals, many of the attendees took advantage of the opportunity to meet and connect with peers in their industry.

The Opening Keynote Session set the tone for the entire Summit. Rabbi Ephraim Eliyahu Shapiro, the internationally renowned speaker and Rav of Shaaray Tefilah in Miami Beach, opened with a definitive charge to the attendees, “Everywhere that you go, every step that you take, every person that you meet, make it an admas kodesh (holy ground). That is the challenge.” He was followed by an inspirational drasha from Rabbi Joey Haber, Rav of the Magen David Synagogue, who focused on two main topics, making one’s office a location that is fit for a ben Torah and on the proper treatment of

employees and colleagues.

R’ Avi Schron, a well know personality in the real estate industry and in the world of askanus, closed the session from the perspective of a ben Torah in the workplace and the responsibility to create a Kiddush Hashem in in all situations. One specific point he touched upon, is one of the main goals of the H3 Summit Movement; To inspire the participants to take concrete steps to ensure that all business deals are executed within the framework of halacha. He asked, “Businessman have consultants for everything related to their business, why can’t they have a Rav or posek on retainer or payroll to oversee every contract and business deal?”

The Summit was graced by the participation of many renowned Rabbanim and Poskim form across the country. Rav Zev Cohen, Rosh Kollel of the Choshen Mishpat

Kollel in Chicago, electrified his audience in a session about honest business dealings, and Rabbi Yosef Viener, the Rav of Kehillas Shaar Shamayim in Monsey, delivered the closing keynote address. In addition, they both participated in a powerful Q & A session on Thursday afternoon, where they shared clear daas Torah on the topics of bitachon, worklife balance and other businessrelated matters.

Rabbi Shmuel Fuerst, Dayan of Agudas Yisroel of Illinois and close talmid of Rav Moshe Feinstein zt”l, gave a shiur about the halachos of hiring and doing business with other Yidden. Rabbi Ari Marburger, Dayan for the Bais Din Maysharim in Lakewood, spoke about various halachos related to the Employer-Employee relationship, and Rabbi Yosef Kushner, posek for the Bais Havaad of Lakewood, spoke twice. Once about Commerce on Shabbos and another about the hlachos of Tzedakah and Maaser. All speaker marveled at and spoke about the Kiddush Hashem of 400 attendees

taking off a day of work to learn and apply lessons to run their business according to halacha.

In addition to the guest speakers, there were several local Rabbanim representing most of the Jewish communities in South Florida, who also spoke and gave shiurim. A session about Business Travel in Halacha was opened with divrei pesicha from Rabbi Nachman Luban, Rosh Kollel of the Boa Raton Kollel, followed by a shiur from Rabbi Yaacov Gross, the Rosh Kollel of the Miami Beach Kollel, and Rabbi Ephraim Friedman, the Rosh Kollel of the Ezra Franco Kollel in Aventura. In a parallel session on “Avoiding Common Pitfalls in the workplace” the session heard divrei pesicha from Rabbi Moshe Schreck , the Rav of Beis Medrash Heichal Hatorah in Hollywood, followed by a shiur by Rabbi Dovid Schoen, the Av Bais Din of the Bais of Florida, and Rabbi Yaakov Tzvi Blejer, Rosh Kollel of the North Miami Beach Kollel. Each speaker drew upon his expertise on these matters to educate and illuminate these often-complex

issues. To round off the list, Rabbi Yosef Galimidi the Rav of the Beit Edmond J Safra Shul in Aventura and Rabbi Yaakov Gibber of the Jewish Center in Boca also share inspirational remarks. Each session was chaired by a local businessman, giving some perspective on the topic or session at hand, including Josh Kon, Avrohom Liberman, Ari Pearl, Andre Roitman, Meir Rosenwasser, Joseph Saka.

A highlight of the entire event was the closing keynote address by R’ Shlomo Werdiger, Chairman of Agudath Israel of America. Mr. Werdiger emphasized, “The most important thing that I can impart to all of you is consistency. Your home life, your shul life have to be the same as your business life. You do not have dual lives” He then regaled the audience with stories about how acting with dignity and courtesy can make a Kiddush Hashem and inspire others to come closer to Judaism.

Mentalist Michael Samen

Michael Samen grew up in Jerusalem, Israel. As demonstrated by his black belt in Capoeira, ability to play five instruments, and history with extreme sports, Michael was always a man of hobbies. But the one hobby that he eventually pursued as a full-time career was mentalism, the art of mind reading. Over the past few years, Michael has performed countless shows across Israel, the UK, the US, and Europe. This Pesach, Michael comes to Miami to perform at several Pesach programs; we sat with him to ask him some questions about mentalism, his career, and his personal life.

expressions, and body language.

The drastically different training and methods used to perform the two acts also affect the audience’s core sentiment.

class, and a bunch of my friends were doing card tricks; I joined and soon found that I was quite good, only to discover I wasn’t fooling my friends with the card tricks, but instead, I was watching them and guessing the results based on what I saw on their faces, this led me down a long road of discovery. I read books on a variety of related topics, practiced daily for years, and met with professionals in the industry until I had a solid foundation.

I’m sure you get asked this often, but what is the difference between a mentalist and a magician?

On paper, Mentalism and Magic can come off as quite similar; the performer stands on stage and invites the audience to participate, performs acts that seem supernatural, and leaves the crowd wondering, “What just happened?” or “How did he do that?”

But if you look into the science behind it, you’ll see they are actually quite different. Magicians typically use sleight of hand and illusions to create wonder, while mentalists tend to use Psychology, facial

‘Magic’ relies heavily on mystery. “How did I do that? Magic.” The facade of magic is used to mask the illusion utilized to perform the trick. If you’ve ever figured out how a trick is done, it loses all its value.

Mentalism, on the other hand, doesn’t rely on illusion; it uses influence and psychology to create something extraordinary. It is a bit like watching a musician play. There’s no big secret behind how he makes the song sound so good; it is an art that he practiced, can perform, and leaves the crowd in awe.

How did you get into mentalism? Is there a School or training program?

I actually got into mentalism when I was about nine. I was in

I always performed as a hobby but never my career. I went to business school and started a pretty successful career in real estate, But during Covid, things changed, and I decided it was time to pursue Mentalism fulltime. And I guess the rest is History.

Do you use your skills in your day-to-day life?

Absolutely, though not always in the dramatic way you might see on stage. You won’t find me hypnotizing people so that they give me a discount, but Mentalism has taught me to be highly observant and attuned to people’s behavior and reactions, which comes in quite handy in everyday life.

Why do you always wear that hat?

When I started breaking into the bigger market, performing

P.38 / TSFCOMMUNITYVOICE.COM COMMUNITY NEWS

at tech conferences or VIP events, the event planners would often ask me not to wear a Kippah. Given that I am a practicing Jew, I wanted to find an alternative, i.e., the hat. But then, slowly, without me noticing, it sort of became my trademark. People often recognize me as “the mentalist with the hat.” And so, I guess, in a way, it’s become a part of me now.

Do you spend a lot of time abroad? What’s that like?

I do. Having a job like mine means traveling a lot, but I absolutely love it. There have been times when I had to travel without my wife, which made it less enjoyable, but for the most part, it’s great.

How do you adjust your show for different audiences?

To me, the best part about Mentalism is that it changes so much based on the person you are doing it to. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard things like, “I never believed in this stuff until it was done to me,” and so, bearing that in mind, it is really important to me that my audience, no matter how big or small, gets to feel the power of an individualized experience.

I also try to change things up based on the theme of the event, and on who the audience is. For example, if I’m performing at a corporate annual dinner, I’ll ask

them for the final numbers, like earnings and growth, that they want to showcase and incorporate them into the show. Or, if it’s a Bar Mitzvah, I’ll make sure to find a way to include the kid’s hobbies or favorite sports.

What’s performing been like since the war?

Honestly, it’s changed a lot in some ways and not so much in others.

For starters, once the war broke out, all of my upcoming events were canceled, forcing me to rethink a little but also freeing

up my time. So, for the first month of the war in Israel, I went from base to base, performing pro bono for soldiers. It was an incredibly humbling experience, and I’m honored I got to meet so many heroes, put a smile on their faces, and raise morale.

Then I went to London and NY for a couple of months and then back to Israel for more shows and army bases. Now, we are back here in Miami for Pesach for some exciting upcoming programs and events. So, like I said, it’s been a bit crazy, but we made it work.

I think most Israelis have been living with this ongoing conflict of being split between not being ready to move on and life (whether we like it or not) starting to move forward. And so I feel pretty privileged that I’ve gotten a mix of both.

Have you ever messed up on stage?

Hahaha, of course! But a big part of being an entertainer is knowing how to get out of things when they don’t go as planned, And so if I read a person’s tells wrong or make a mistake, usually, the audience won’t even notice!

Special messages were shared by Mayor of Hollywood, Josh Levy, community Rabbis, and pop star Nissim Black among other distinguished guests.

What were these individuals

celebrating? An achievement that has never been seen in the history of Florida. In the heart of Hollywood, Florida, amidst a diverse community of immigrants and working-class families, lies College Prep Jewish Academy—a beacon of hope and opportunity for its students. Against all odds, the Middle School students at College Prep achieved something truly extraordinary, rewriting the narrative of what’s possible for young learners. All students in the 8th Grade Honors class at College Prep passed the PERT college entrance exam and are now taking college classes for college credit. That was not a typo, 8th graders taking college courses! This evening celebrated the triumph of hope, hard work, and determination!

The passing of the PERT exam by the entire 8th-grade class at College Prep is a testament to

students’ academic prowess and determination. Head of School, Rabbi Chaim Albert compared this achievement to the story of Rabbi Akiva, the great Jewish sage who only began learning Torah later in life yet achieved greatness through determination and humility.

The PERT (Postsecondary Education Readiness Test) exam serves as a crucial milestone for students aspiring to pursue higher education, assessing their readiness for college-level coursework. Passing the dual enrollment exam was once believed to be reserved for elite upperclassmen, in 10th and 11th grade. College Prep has shattered all preconceived notions by preparing their middle school students to pass this challenging exam.

These 8th grade students in College Prep are now on their

way to complete over 2 years of college credits while still in high school. This incredible feat will help these students as they attempt to apply for college in the future but will also save families/ students thousands of dollars in the high sticker cost of college. By gaining early exposure to college-level coursework, these students are not only preparing for their future but also gaining a competitive edge in higher education and beyond.

What’s the secret sauce of College Prep? Instead of waiting until students reach high school, College Prep starts laying the foundation for college readiness in middle school. College Prep’s motto is “College Starts Day 1.”

Central to the success of College Prep is its exceptional staff, composed of highly qualified educators dedicated to nurturing the potential of every student. A staggering 100% of College Prep staff hold Master’s degrees, a testament to their commitment to continuous learning and professional growth. At the helm of this dedicated team is the Chief

Academic Officer, a Harvard graduate whose leadership and vision have propelled College Prep to new heights of excellence.

Leading College Prep’s success story are two remarkable individuals—Yaisa Rodriguez and Marie Yoda, the Directors of College Prep and Honors Tracks. With a keen understanding of the unique challenges faced by 8th-grade students, Rodriguez and Yoda have devised a winning formula for preparing them for college success. Their innovative approach combines rigorous academics, personalized support, and a nurturing learning environment, empowering students to exceed expectations and reach their full potential.

College Prep also provides learning tracks to meet the multiplicity of interests of students. These tracks empower students to take ownership of their education, pursue their passions, and cultivate the skills and experiences necessary to thrive in college and beyond. Whether students choose the Honors Track, College Prep Track,

or Jewish Business Academy Track, they are equipped with the knowledge, confidence, and resilience to succeed in their academic and professional pursuits.

Gad Elbaz beautifully summarized the evening by delivering an inspiring speech highlighting the crucial mission of bringing students out of public schools and into College Prep. Money must never stand in the way of a Jewish child claiming his rightful Jewish education. His words resonated deeply with the audience, underscoring the importance of education and the power of community support in shaping the future generation.

The story of College Prep demonstrates the Jewish belief that greatness may be achieved through humility and hard work. May this evening bring inspiration and hope to the Jewish future!

Operation Inspiration

Let Them Eat (Pesach) Cake

When told that the French peasants had no bread to eat, Marie Antoinette is reputed to have said, “Let them eat cake.” Intended to show just how out of touch she was with the population, leading to the angry feelings of the populace during the French Revolution, this phrase was actually not cake, but “brioches,” a type of enriched bread with eggs and cream. The idea was that when they had no plain bread to eat, she suggested they should eat better bread. It’s kind of like saying, “My Honda broke down,” and someone responding, “So take the Tesla.”

To be fair, this story was originally said about “a certain princess” who was unnamed in the publication, and first written in 1765, when Marie Antoinette was nine years old and had never been to France, so the likelihood of her actually saying it is pretty slim. It may never have happened at all and just been a story made up by the author.

However, this concept popped into my head when someone asked me why it is that on Pesach we eat all sorts of “delicacies,” with great gusto, but the minute Pesach is over we don’t want to touch them. I wouldn’t say that’s entirely true, as we had a package of rainbow cake in our freezer from last Pesach that we dipped into every so often and it was only finished very recently. However, I think that is more the exception than the rule.

All those delicious shehakol cookies and the crackers that are “really not bad if you eat them with dips,” aren’t first on our lists when we can have anything we want, but on Pesach, we all tend to go a little crazy for them.

The analogy was made to

Shabbos, and we all know the famous story of the king who smelled fragrant aromas coming from a Jewish home one Saturday and was invited to partake of the meal. When his chefs tried to recreate the food in the King’s kitchen, they were unsuccessful. The man told the King that the Jews have a spice called “Shabbos,” which cannot be bought or sold and that’s what gave the food its divine taste.

I had a friend who used to say cholent was just for Shabbos, because during the week you don’t have a neshama yesaira to protect you from it. Indeed, some foods are fantastic on Shabbos but somewhat lacking other times.

I think the same applies to Pesach foods. We do the best we can to make enjoyable items for the holiday, and when we do, we appreciate them. They’re the best we’ve got, and we recognize that. We appreciate the spiritual goals of ridding ourselves of chametz and it adds to the enjoyment of these items. Inherently, though, they may not be as good, and unless you have gluten issues, you will probably choose something else when it’s not Pesach.

What this said to me, though, is that we can change our objective feelings with a decision to do so. Making the most of what we have in any given situation and being happy with it leads us to overall happiness in life. Sitting there at the Yom Tov meal lamenting that the chocolate chip cookie bars you made with almond flour are not as good as your Bubby’s chocolate chip cookies will not make you happier. It will only steal the happiness from

the moment because you will be unable to enjoy what you have, thinking it’s inferior to what you could have had, if not for Pesach.

This is a slippery slope, because you will also likely lose some of the pleasure and appreciation of the festival itself, and maybe even “blame” Hashem, chas v’shalom, for not being able to enjoy yourself to the fullest by having leavened foods. So many people don’t enjoy Shabbos for the same reasons, because they look at it as a day when you can’t do things you want to, instead of appreciating the special sanctity, beauty, and enjoyment that only Shabbos can offer.

If you make a conscious decision to enjoy what you have, though; to appreciate whatever Hashem has given you in the moment, then even the cake which falls apart because it’s made of potato starch can compare to the finest baked goods at other times. When we say the bracha of Shehechyanu, thanking Hashem for bringing us to “THIS” time, we should remember that each day we live, and whatever is in that day, should be special and enjoyed to the fullest.

That’s the secret of enjoying Pesach foods today, even if next week we’ll opt for the pizza. In fact, it’s the secret of living a good life, content that there’s nothing else we’d rather have at this precise moment in time.

El Al Launches Year-Round Service Between Fort Lauderdale and Tel Aviv

TEL AVIV & MARGATE, FL, APRIL 16, 2024 — Yesterday, EL AL Israel Airlines operated its inaugural flight on its 787 Dreamliner aircraft from Ft. Lauderdale to Tel Aviv. This new, non-stop service between Fort Lauderdale - Hollywood International Airport and Tel Aviv, brings the weekly South Florida schedule to seven flights, just in time for Passover and the busy summer travel season.

“In response to increased demand, EL AL is expanding its U.S. operations and flight schedules. EL AL exists to keep community connected and when all other airlines stopped flying to Israel, EL AL morphed from airline to lifeline.” said Simon Newton-Smith, EL AL Senior Vice President of the Americas. “With Broward County home to a strong Jewish community of 230,000, FLL was a natural choice for EL AL. Both Miami and Fort Lauderdale offer passengers access to many domestic and international connections, especially with our codeshare partners Delta Air Lines and JetBlue”, Newton-Smith concluded.

Beginning this week, EL AL will operate seven weekly flights between South Florida and Israel. The new, additional flights (LY22) are based out of the new FLL gateway and are scheduled to depart Monday evenings and arrive Tuesday

mornings in TLV. On Saturdays, flights depart FLL late night and arrive Sunday evenings in TLV. The outbound flights (LY21) operate on Mondays, leaving TLV in the morning, arriving in FLL in the afternoon and on Fridays,

departing TLV late-nights and arriving in FLL Friday mornings. Maor Elbaz-Starinsky, Consul General of Israel in Miami stated, “The new EL AL Airlines Fort Lauderdale-Tel Aviv flights build on the strong bonds between

Broward County, Florida and Israel! The two sunshine-blessed states will count on more ways to further expand the already vibrant political, commercial, cultural and tourism ties. It is only natural that the two most innovative and diverse states in their respective regions have such deep connections. More so since South Florida is home to the world’s top 4 largest Jewish population.”

FLL CEO/Director of Aviation, Mark E. Gale said, “Adding EL AL to our airport’s roster of international carriers is a feather in the cap for FLL as we strive to increase our portfolio of global airlines and destinations. Now

South Floridians have a new year-round nonstop option from Fort Lauderdale for traveling to Israel for leisure or business.”

Lorin Maugery, Israel Ministry of Tourism’s Consul to South US, remarked, “I wish to congratulate all the El Al team for adding this very important service between Fort Lauderdale and Tel Aviv. Since the beginning of the year, travel has been slowly resuming and growing and this is another strong sign of this recovery of tourism to Israel.

The residents of South Florida and Florida in general have a deep connection with Israel, and this direct route makes it even easier to visit our beautiful destination.”

Since October 7, EL AL has strategically adjusted its U.S. flight schedule to maintain a vital air bridge to and from Israel. With plans to operate over 50 direct weekly flights to Israel this summer, EL AL’s expanded route network is made possible by the optimization of its Dreamliner aircrafts’ schedules and changes to the rest of its international routes. All EL AL flights from North America are operated with Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft featuring the latest amenities including lie-flat seats in Business Class, gourmet meals, and an extensive choice of wines and beverages.

Smash House Burgers

What a smashing idea! Let’s grab a burger and get smashed! Whoops! It’s the burgers that get smashed, not the diners!

What makes smash burgers a smashing success is because the juice is sealed into the burger which is smashed within the first thirty seconds of the ball of beef hitting the griddle. You now have the two most common secrets to a successful smash burger: a loosely packed ball of high-fat beef thrown on a hot grill and then flattened with a special utensil. This assures a thinner patty with juices seared in with a nice caramelized, crusty outer coating.

There’s more meat to this story than just another hamburger joint. Benjamin Haimoff wanted to bring a kosher hamburger restaurant to Florida, one that would offer fresh food, consistency, and fast service whether for carryout or for sit-down… and one that would be just as appealing to the nonkosher consumer as well.

Smash House Burgers is a kid-friendly family style restaurant in North Miami Beach. The franchisee is Yitzi Yeret, a Ger Chasid from Yerushalayim, who was the mashgiach at Benjamin’s previous restaurant. Smash House opened under the ORB with Yitzi as the mashgiach. Appreciating his hard work, integrity and knowing the needs of his young family, Benjamin turned over the franchise to Yitzi. Yes, you read that right. Giving to the community is an integral part of Smash House Burgers’ plans. Discounts are generously given to hatzalah, schools, shuls, and other organizations. Additionally, free food is given to Chai Lifeline, to rabbi’s with a recipient list, and to families that know they can come in and place an order.

Success can be measured not only by the 200 meals a day served, but that 30% of the customers are non-Jewish and repeat diners. Happy employees are another sign of success. But the real success is in the hamburger.

The menu is simple, family oriented, and offers reasonably priced options whether for the famous burgers or for healthier food choices. Yitzi recommended I try the smash burger of course. Benjamin insisted I had to add their unbelievably delicious, realistic pareve cheese. Oh, and throw some beef fry on top. My plan was for carryout, but I decided to wash, make hamotzi, and then wrap up my lunch to finish in the car for my ride home. Once I took my first bite, I couldn’t put it down. I’m not such a hamburger maven, but I scarfed it, whoofed it! Best hamburger ever!

I can’t wait to go back! And when you go, be sure to let Yitzi know you read the smashing review in the South Florida Community Voice and get your 10% discount.

The System is Broken

A patient went to the Doctor and asked him to check his leg. “Doc, something is wrong. Just put your ear up to my thigh, you’ll hear it!”

The Doctor cautiously places his ear to the man’s thigh only to hear, “Give me $10! I’m begging you! I need $10!”

“I’ve never seen or heard anything like this before! How long has this been going on?” the Doctor asked.

“That’s nothing, Doc. Put your ear to my knee.”

The Doctor put his ear to the man’s knee and heard it say, “Please! I really need $5! Just $5! Please, $5, that’s all I am asking for!”

“Sir, I really don’t know what to tell you. I’ve never seen anything like this.” The Doctor was truly dumbfounded.

“Wait, Doc, that’s not all of it. There’s more. Just put your ear down on my ankle,” the man urged him.

The Doctor did as the man said and was amazed to hear his ankle plead, “Please, I just need $20! Please lend me $20, please! I am really desperate!”

“I have no idea what to tell you,” the Doctor said. “There’s nothing about it in any of my books,” he said as he frantically searched all his medical reference books. “However... I can make a welleducated guess. Based on life and all my previous experiences, I can

tell you with some certainty that your leg seems to be broke in three places.”

Just when everyone kept promising that inflation was under control, we got the March Consumer Price Index. The CPI report, an important metric for tracking inflation, showed that overall inflation rose 0.4% for the month, which was hotter than estimates of 0.3%. Year over year, inflation increased from 3.2% to 3.%, which was hotter than the 3.4% that most expected.

Breaking down the numbers, we see that “Shelter costs,” which make up 45% of the core index, rose 0.4%. Shelter remained up 5.7% year over year, and is not making any progress. Rents rose 0.4% last month, and Owners’ equivalent rent, which tries to capture the increase in homeownership costs, rose 0.4%. Of significant note, the biggest spike was 22.2% for auto insurance.

In his annual shareholder letter, JPMorgan Chase CEO

Jamie Dimon highlighted concern that markets “seem to be pricing in at a 70% to 80% chance of a soft landing” modest growth along with declining inflation and interest rates” while he believes “the odds are a lot lower than that.” Others seem to be slowly joining the bandwagon citing a very challenging economy that most aren’t properly accounting for. This persistent inflation will make it hard for the Fed to reach its 2% target rate. Unfortunately, as I have been saying, the only thing that will help lower inflation is a higher unemployment rate. We see the underlying cracks, but the Fed will likely wait for the jobs market to break before appropriately addressing rate cuts. Like I said, the whole system is broken.

Selling With Freedom

It was just last month that my proposal was turned down. “No thank you”, they said. Earlier today though, my phone buzzed. It was them again. Not to say hi. They wanted my services after all. So, what changed?

Did they have a change of heart? Had my competitor not come through? Maybe they gave it a bit more thought?

For some background, this potential client was a government municipality. I’ve never dealt with client like this prior. They apparently wanted to change the way that their residents interacted with customer payments. This included courthouse fees and other dues. Until now, all payments were made on a physical terminal in the courthouse. While there’s nothing wrong with accepting credit card payments this way, it does have some limitations.

For one, customers, and in our case, residents are only able make a payment when the doors of this municipality building are open for business. Because someone is required to be manning the device, the transaction needs to take place at the business’s convenience instead of the customers. Second, did you know that keying in a transaction on a physical device is more expensive for the business? On average, a business that is keying in a transaction on a physical device is paying at least an extra twenty percent on the cost of the transaction.

The solution for this prospect would be a simple one. Keep their physical device for in person transactions while having an available online payment site and 24/7 phone number for customer

payments after hours. Keying on an online portal is less expensive than keying on a physical device although nothing beats the low cost of swiping which can be another twenty basis points lower than keying on an online payment portal.

All this information was something I highlighted not just in our last months conversation but in my proposal. Unfortunately, they came back the next day saying, “no thank you.” What should my next approach have been? I understood that a potential customer had a very real need. I simultaneously understood that I’m the right person to solve this need. Something from my offer just didn’t fit them. Maybe it was my product? Maybe it was my price? Should I have gotten more clarity?

In short, they didn’t want to take on a new system from what they already were using especially if it came with an added cost. I wasn’t sure why I was brought into the conversation in the first place. Welcome to bureaucratic red tape, I guess.

Their email read: “I spoke with our office today and it seems like we’re not receptive to making the system change. Because it’s our office manager dealing with the payment system, it was her call. My department isn’t thrilled with a new expense to expand this service with a different company.”

Now it was time to respond. There are many ways one could do so, but the writing was on the wall, so I kept it simple: “Thanks for getting back. Completely understand. Who wants to be learning new software?

I usually don’t offer but if covering the monthly cost would help the decision, it would be my pleasure.”

That’s it. Nothing more. I felt that cost was part of their decision so I’m not against waiving some cost of it means bringing on a long-term client. There are some offers I don’t initially make but they made clear that cost ultimately influenced their decision. Or did it? I didn’t follow up after that email and neither did they. Case closed. They knew my value offer and moved on.

Just this week, one month later, my phone pinged. It was a text. Their office wanted to know if I can just set them up with online payments. Now we’re back and forth again and a new proposal is on its way. I believe I’ll be bringing on a new client for a very simple reason.

I was involved when my number was called and stepped back after it was no longer. They understood my value. They came to me in the first place because of that. I’m not here to push a prospect. I’m here to have full confidence in my approach. When the need was therefore re-examined, they were back at my doorstep. They felt no added pressure.

Be active. Create value. Let your prospects dictate. You’ll experience freedom when selling.

Shalom

Zucchini and Cheese Rolls

Courtesy of: Yo Chef

We are all looking to diversify and innovate our Chol Hamoed meals, so here is a delicious and easy recipe for a light and kosher lunch for Pesach.

INGREDIENTS

• 3 medium green zucchini

• 150 grams of mozzarella cheese

• 150 grams of feta cheese

• 100 grams of cream cheese

• 2 tablespoons chopped parsley (optional)

• 2 tablespoons chopped dill (optional)

• For tomato sauce:

• 4 medium tomatoes finely chopped, or a can (15 oz) of crushed tomatoes

• 2 cans of tomato sauce (15 oz)

• Glass of water

• 2 tablespoons of sugar

• Teaspoon of salt

• Half a teaspoon of black pepper

• 4 crushed garlic cloves

PREPARATION

1. We will take 3 medium green zucchini, remove the head, cut slices along the length of the zucchini with a thickness of about half a cm, place it neatly on an aluminum pan, cover it with aluminum foil, and put it in the oven at a temperature of 350 degrees for fifteen minutes, after fifteen minutes check that the zucchini has softened and it is possible to roll It’s easy - the

purpose of the oven is to soften the zucchini so that we can work with it, but not to overcook it.

2. In the meantime, put all the cheeses, crushed garlic and a little salt (and herbs for those who like) in a bowl and mix into a filling that is easy to fill.

3. After the zucchini are soft, we will take each slice, put a spoonful of the filling and roll into a nice roll, place neatly in aluminum in a round pie pan.

4. In a separate bowl, mix well all the ingredients for the tomato sauce, taste and adjust the flavors.

5. Pour the tomato sauce over the zucchini rolls in the pan, cover and put in the oven for half an hour at 30 degrees, after half an hour raise the heat to 425 degrees for another ten minutes until the zucchini browns a little.

6. Before serving, sprinkle some chopped parsley leaves.

7. Serve hot or at room temperature.

Kosher Recipes Made Easy

• 75MIN DURATION

• 60MIN COOK TIME

• 15MIN PREP TIME • 6 SERVINGS

POTATO KUGEL CUPS

THE BEST KUGEL YOU WILL EVER TASTE.

To get the best results from this kugel, use a great quality extra virgin olive oil.

INGREDIENTS

• 3/4 cup extra virgin olive oil, such as Colavita

• 3 eggs

• 2 teaspoons kosher salt

• ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

• 6 large Idaho potatoes

• 1 large onion, quartered

PREPARATION

1. Preheat oven to 425°F. Liberally oil six (4- to 6-ounce) glass dessert dishes or custard cups with 1 to 2 tablespoons of evoo each. Place custard cups on a baking pan.

2. Fill a large bowl with cold water and, as you peel potatoes, place them in cold water to prevent browning.

3. Place the pan of cups in 425°F oven to heat up the evoo (be very careful with glass, extreme temperature changes can cause it to shatter) .

4. Beat eggs in a small bowl. Add salt and pepper, mix well, and set aside.

5. Pour ¾ cup of evoo in a small saucepan and place over medium-low heat.

6. Cut potatoes lengthwise into halves or quarters so they fit into food processor feed tube. Process potatoes and onions using the blade that creates thin, shoestring-like strips.

7. Transfer potatoes and onions to a large bowl, add egg mixture and heated oil from stovetop, mix very well. Remove any large pieces of potatoes or onions that weren’t processed properly.

8. Remove heated cups from the oven and spoon potato mixture evenly into hot, oiled cups.

9. Bake at 425°F for 1 hour. If the sides are still

pale, cook for 20 minutes longer until the tops look crunchy and sides look golden and browned. Loosen edges with a knife, unmold and serve on a platter.

TIPS:

To make this as a potato kugel pie, bake at 425°F in a 9-inch round glass baking dish for 1 hour 20 minutes, depending on desired crunchiness. Make Ahead Tip: While potato kugel will be at its best made fresh (refrigeration or freezing will cause it to lose some crunch), you can make it ahead and even freeze it with these instructions.

1. 1. Slightly under bake, cool completely , wrap tightly and freeze.

2. 2. Thaw at room temperature, reheat, uncovered at 375°F for 10 minutes.

Short Ribs Stew with Root Vegetables and Chestnuts in Wine

A festive recipe in honor of Yom Tov, a slow-cooked short ribs stew with root vegetables and chestnuts in wine, so many flavors and depth with minimal work.

INGREDIENTS

• 3 pounds short ribs on the bone

• 2 peeled carrots

• 2 medium white onions

• 4 stalks of celery

• 10 mini potatoes (optional for those who want)

• 5 peeled garlic cloves

• 2 packets of ready-to-eat chestnuts

• 3 glasses of good dry red wine

• 2 cups of beef stock or water

• 5 sprigs of thyme

• 4 tablespoons of olive oil

• 6 tablespoons of date silan

• Salt

• Ground black pepper

• Chopped parsley for serving (optional)

• 4 crushed garlic cloves

PREPARATION

1. We will take the meat and cut it into medium cubes, put salt and black pepper on the meat from all directions.

2. We will take a cast iron pot that can be put in the oven, put 4 tablespoons of olive oil and turn on the fire on a large flame, until the pot is really hot, put the cubes of meat in the pot (not too crowded) and sear from all sides until the meat is brown and nice and take out into a bowl.

3. Cut the onion into slices and put it in the same pot, fry until it starts to turn golden (if necessary, add another 2 tablespoons of olive oil) then add 3 tablespoons of silane and fry for a few more minutes until the onion is caramelized but not too fried.

4. In the meantime, cut the carrot and celery into medium pieces,

5. After the onion is caramelized, add the carrot, celery, garlic to the pot, and fry for another 3-4 minutes until the vegetables brown a little, add the potatoes and chestnuts, mix everything well and place the meat cubes in an orderly manner between the vegetables, add the wine and simmer for 10 minutes until the alcohol evaporates and the wine will be reduced a bit,

6. Then add the beef stock or the water, (make sure that the liquids cover the meat, if necessary add another glass of wine and a glass of beef stock or water) put the thyme sprigs on the meat, pour another 3 tablespoons of silane over everything,

7. We will cover very well with two layers of aluminum foil, then the lid of the pot, (we will make sure that the pot and the lid can go into the oven so that they will not be damaged, if the lid has a plastic handle that cannot go into the oven, we will be satisfied with just the aluminum foil) We will leave the pot on the fire in a medium flame until Once everything is boiling, carefully transfer to a hot oven at 300 degrees for 4 hours, then check that the meat is soft and tasty, if the meat is still not soft enough, continue in the oven for another hour.

8. When serving, add chopped parsley (optional)

9. It can be prepared a day or two in advance and kept in the refrigerator, the flavors only get stronger and better.

10. Enjoy your meal.
