My Shabbos Miracle By Judge Norman Ciment

I was a poor student, wavering between probation all the time, and my parents had no money, which meant I had to work full-time to support myself and pay for school. That meant that I had less time to study because I was busy working all the time. Add to that, I was the only sabbath observant student in my entire school. To fully appreciate one of the greatest turning points in my life, it’s important to realize what was going on in The University of Miami Law School in 1960. A new dean, if you could call him that, came up with the brilliant idea of turning the University of Miami Law School (nicknamed Suntan U) into the next Yale Ivy League type school. How could he achieve this unbelievable feat? By curving all our grades and flunking out seventy percent of the students, of course. During this time, I had a tough professor who would yell, trying to teach us by employing fear tactics and intimidation. So imagine my dismay when I showed up to school after the summer to register for new classes and the assistant dean asked why I was standing in line. I said, “To register of course, why are you asking?” She politely showed me a list of names that I was clearly missing from. Apparently, even though I had left with a C+ average, the university’s new curving system gave me an F, along with countless others. To say I was speechless is an understatement. I had my entire life riding on this and this individual was about to hang me out to dry before I even got the chance to graduate. I was desperate and immediately found my professor and started using the very lessons he taught me, “You taught us to go up against the Judge and to fight for justice. How can you allow this injustice to occur? They’re going to destroy my life!” Unbelievably, he took my hand and stormed into the assistant dean’s office, demanding that she change the grade, allowing me to register. P 1 4 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

She explained that she could not change the grade or allow me to register, as this was the policy of the new dean. Incredibly this professor then stormed into the dean’s office and gave him an ultimatum. Two minutes later he told me to go register. Folks, if that isn’t the hand of God, then I don’t know what is. But as I was about to find out, God‘s hand is very great, because this was just the beginning. Now that one crisis had been averted, I could finally register for more classes. Of course I felt the pressure because I still had to get the grades which was no easy task for me. Well, wouldn’t you know it but my two biggest tests that I had with my favorite professor turned out to be on Shabbos. While I tried desperately to explain to him that I could not take any tests on Shabbos, he would have none of it. So I got notes from prominent rabbis in Miami Beach, explaining how I simply could not write on Shabbos. With great reluctance, I gave the notes to my professor who looked at me and said, “Okay Ciment, be at my house at 9 AM Sunday morning.” I was pretty nervous because I knew he

would scrutinize me even moreso, for having disturbed his private time. I showed up at his house early Sunday morning and as we entered his office, I noticed a picture of a rabbi on the mantel. I was confused, and he explained that while he was a Catholic, his grandfather was born a Jew. I was in a state of shock but said nothing and took the tests. When I finished, the professor, who was angry with me for disturbing his Sunday morning, walked over to my examinations and simply wrote an A on both tests. I thought I was dreaming. He then instructed me to register and take all classes with him and his colleague. It’s close to sixty years later and I still can’t believe that it happened. The simple truth is that if I had to take the test on Saturday, I not only would have violated my principles (and Hashem’s laws) but I certainly would not have gotten two A’s - meaning I more than likely would have failed out of school. Of course if we choose to see it as nothing more than mere coincidence and happenstance, then it’s simply a cute story. But I was the one who experienced it and I can only feel gratitude to G-d for His having taken my hand for reasons I will never know. That’s not to say that I didn’t have to study hard, but at the end of the day, none of that would have coagulated into a law degree unless G-d met me halfway, and then some! What’s interesting about this incident is that what initially appeared to be a hindrance to my career, became the key opening the door to it. The benefits of keeping the Shabbos are beyond immeasurable. Thank G-d, it allowed me to become an attorney, judge, mediator, and City Commissioner and in 1981, the first Sabbath observant Mayor (in America) of Miami Beach. All because of honoring the Shabbos. Once in office, I also had the golden opportunity to once again honor the Shabbos by erecting the first Eruv in Miami Beach.

JELF Empowers Local Students in Broward County through Interest-Free Loans Application for the 2024-2025 Academic Year is Open January 1-April 30, 2024 FT. LAUDERDALE, FL - December 12, 2023 The Jewish Educational Loan Fund (JELF) provided 0% interest loans to 438 students, disbursing a total of $2,025,261 in 2023. Among them, 45 Jewish students from Broward received vital support amounting to $236,223 for their academic pursuits. JELF, the sole Jewish organization exclusively focused on college financial aid, stands out in its commitment to higher education. Since 1961, JELF has provided over $16 million to 5,500 students in the 5-state region of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia (excluding metro DC), boasting a remarkable 99% repayment rate. As the 2024-25 academic year approaches, JELF invites Jewish students to apply for interest-free loans tailored for higher education, covering college, graduate school, and P 1 8 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

vocational programs. The application period is open from January 1 to April 30, 2024. Applicants must meet the following criteria to be eligible for a JELF loan: • Permanent resident of FL, GA, SC, NC, and VA (excluding metro DC) • Enrolled full-time in a program leading to a degree or certificate • In good academic standing • U.S. citizen or have lawful immigration status • Able to provide an co-signer that resides in the U.S. • Planning to accept federal subsidized and unsubsidized loans JELF’s interest-free loans cover educational and living expenses often overlooked by traditional financial aid, including travel, rent, food, and books. By offering 0% interest loans, JELF saves borrowers thousands of dollars annually, alleviating the burden of high-interest student loan

debt that affects 45 million Americans. The unique strength of JELF’s “free loan” model lies in its sustainability. Repaid funds continue to serve the next generation of students, forming a cycle of support. While former recipients pay back their loans, community donors remain essential to meeting the challenges of rising tuition and inflation. Recently elected Board Chair Emily Sauerteig emphasizes the enduring impact of contributions to JELF: “As I step into this role, I am deeply committed to ensuring JELF’s continued success in empowering students through education. My passion for the mission, coupled with the generosity of our community, will drive us to new heights. Together, we can make a lasting difference in the lives of aspiring students.” For more information about JELF and to support its mission, please visit jelf.org. Stress - As Bad as Smoking? By Dr. Ezra Miller

In today’s fast-paced world, stress has evolved from a primal survival tool to an everyday challenge. While some stress can be beneficial, many of us grapple chronic stress, linked to a range of health issues such as obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and even cancer risk. Understanding stress, its impact on our health, and how to enhance stress tolerance becomes vital for our overall well-being. Fundamentally, stress primes our body for a fight-or-flight response - a survival mechanism once crucial in extreme situations. Now, however, this same response gets triggered by daily pressures like traffic jams and work deadlines. Though helpful in the short term, when stress is prolonged chronically, it can undermine our body’s systems, making us more susceptible to diseases and compromising our overall quality and length of life. Research indicates that chronic stress weakens our body’s defenses, inviting diseases and accelerating their progression. Moreover, it directly affects cardiovascular health by impacting blood pressure and our heart’s well-being. Robert Sapolsky, in “Why Zebras Don’t Get P 2 4 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

Ulcers,” likens a Type A personality, often associated with high levels of chronic stress, to a higher risk for cardiovascular diseases than smoking. While not all Type A personalities will have heart issues, they do face an increased risk, emphasizing the need for health improvements, exercise, and stress management. Although chronic stress can be damaging to our health, eliminating stress entirely is not the goal; it’s about having times to unwind from the constant “fight or flight” mode. Quality sleep —seven to nine hours—is a foundational step to recover from daily stressors and improve overall mood, motivation, memory, and long-term health. Prioritizing relaxation before bedtimes facilitates the transition into a relaxed state, crucial for quality sleep. Additionally, building our body’s resilience against stress is pivotal. Regular exercise, at least 45 minutes three times a week, exposes us to controlled stress and enables our body to adapt to greater stressors. Strengthening ourselves physically fortifies us to tackle the myriad of life’s challenges. In addition to quality sleep and exercise, fostering strong social connections can serve as a powerful

tool in managing stress. Spending time with friends and family, or nurturing a support network, significantly contributes to reducing stress levels. Engaging in meaningful conversations, seeking advice, or simply sharing experiences can provide a sense of relief and support during stressful times. Cultivating these social bonds not only helps in managing stress but also promotes overall well-being. Stress is like a double-edged sword—it can empower or harm us. Having a positive mindset around stress and maintaining a balance between stress and recovery is key to reaping its benefits. Achieving balance in daily life and managing stressors can significantly impact our health and longevity. By understanding stress, managing it effectively, and building resilience, we can navigate its effects and harness its power for better health and a longer, more fulfilling life. Ezra Miller is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Personal Trainer, and IDF veteran. He is currently the owner of Empower Fitness and specializes in longevity and injury prevention. BUSINESS

Just Give Me A Price By Shalom Markman

A company recently made a presentation at our NY office. They were brought in by leadership to help hundreds of our employees excel in something specific. It was well received. A telltale sign is usually the swarm of folks that approach the presenter with additional questions and desired clarifications. Two months later, I got contacted by this company. They wanted to have a quick chat. It’s always possible that they wanted to follow up regarding their presentation and perhaps take a further step together. In sales, don’t assume. Hear everyone out. As someone in sales, I’ll always make the time for a conversation. Don’t take it as something personal when I do. It was during the first thirty seconds of this call that I learned a lesson I’m still working on applying today. They immediately acknowledged their visit to our company. “It was one of our favorite presentations thus far”, the CEO explained to my curious ears. “But” he continued, “I must have been approached by twenty sales reps trying to get our business. Frankly, I was turned off. As for you, we’ve been interacting for the past six months together on Linkedin and not once was our correspondence a transactional one. While I trust your company, I’ve lost a bit of respect for the way I’ve been P 3 2 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

approached by your associates. They did get me thinking about my processing rates being too high, though. After our past interactions and getting to know you in a low-level way, I feel comfortable with you. Why don’t you see what you can do to lower my cost, and you’ll have my business?” I was floored. I couldn’t help but wonder how these sales reps, most of whom were more advanced than I, had struck out. Don’t they know how to make a sale? There are many ways, but how did each of strike out? I couldn’t wrap my head around it. Part of this phone call was of course talking cost. Instead of presenting a new cost on the spot when asked, I explained that I needed a bit more data from him prior to being confident in presenting a new price. My prospect was confused. “Just give me a price,” he said. “Your associates gave me a new price on the spot.” I instantly recognized that I had a bit of education to teach about my product. A broader understanding about my service was necessary before moving forward together. It now became clear. My associates were too busy selling the end product. They were selling on price without recognizing that this prospect inherently valued more than just end result. He would

have been equally impressed with a bit of product education in addition. In most cases, there’s always space to undercut the other, but this prospect needed more. I’m here today to suggest that your clients won’t choose you based on price. Yes, it’s a factor. Understanding the needs of a future client, however, is often the difference in making the sale. The key in this case, was helping expand my prospects knowledge. I’d like to prove this further. I came back a few days later with a new price, lower than his current cost but higher than what was offered by my associates. Fast forward. They are a new client of mine. (I don’t over promise if I can’t guarantee it.) The lesson here is a simple one. In sales, you don’t have to be the best. You don’t need to be the most aggressive. You don’t even need to offer the lowest price. Instead, find a way to make yourself known in your industry while being a pleasure to deal with. This builds trust and they will push their way into you. Shalom Markman started selling merchant services by door knocking in NYC. The Guessing Game. What To Expect From The Fed. By Shmuel Shayowitz Seymour and Irving, two elderly residents at the Senior Home, are sitting next to each other in the lounge. Suddenly, Seymour says to Irving, “I bet you can’t guess how old I am!” “I bet I can,” replied Irving. “Well, I’ll bet you can’t,” declared Seymour. “You’re on,” says Irving with a smile. “Care to make this interesting?!” The two seniors agree to wage $100 each, confident in their position. Irving tells his friend, “Now please stand up so I can properly investigate you.” Seymour does what he’s told. Irving looks him up and down. “Now turn around,” says Irving. Again, Seymour does what he is told so his friend can analyze him up and down. “Now turn back around and jump up and down on one leg,” says Irving. Again, Seymour complies while Irving carefully evaluates him up and down. After much inspection, Irving confidently says, “You are 83 years old!” Seymour was amazed and couldn’t believe what he had just heard. “Wow, Irving,” he says, “you’re absolutely right! I am 83. How on earth did you work that out?!” After receiving the prize money, Irving says, “You told me yesterday!” Speaking of “told you so,” – as I have written and predicted, the Federal Reserve did not make any moves at its December meeting. I would also like to go on record as ‘guessing’ P 3 6 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

and predicting that the Federal Reserve will be cutting rates very soon. I posted a survey on my social media accounts asking how many people think The Fed will cut rates in 2024. To my surprise, most said they would not. The fact that most people assume that The Fed won’t be cutting rates makes me concerned that many aren’t positioning themselves for success. More than 60% of bond analysts predict a Fed cut as early as March. I don’t think we will see a cut in March, but I do believe we will see a potential 50 basis point cut in May. So, how can the average homeowner or homebuyer take advantage of this information? Knowing that the “cost of funds” for all debt will be lower a year from now should give everyone insights into how to operate now. Many mistakenly believe they need to wait until lower rates present themselves to take action. This is a mistake. In fact, I have daily conversations with homeowners who lament the fact that they missed the boat regarding lower Home Equity (“Heloc”) rates. Anyone who thinks that is unaware of how home equity lines of credit work. Rates on HELOC loans are variable, and are not locked – ever. This means that regardless of whether you took out that HELOC in 2020 when rates were below 3%, that loan is now at least 8.5% - just like for those who took out a loan last month. The same holds true for credit card debt and most other debt tied to the Fed Funds Rate, which is what the Federal Reserve will cut in 2024.

Some people whom I speak with are shocked when we have a consultation, and I give them my time, attention, and advice - and it does not have anything to do with getting a new mortgage. They appreciate my guidance and insights but feel bad for “wasting my time.” The truth is, I would rather spend the time and effort now being proactive to help someone with their finances than to speak with them a year from now and regret the fact that they didn’t take action sooner. Take the guesswork out of your finances by reaching out to someone knowledgeable today!
