COMMUNITY NEWS

South Florida Org Helps Those Experiencing a Medical Crisis We sat down with Rabbi Yochanon Klein, co-founder of Healing Hearts, a little over a year ago to get an overview of his amazing organization, which helps bring healing to everyone in their medical need. Now, as we approach 2023’s year-end, we caught up again with Rabbi Klein for some updates on how Healing Hearts has grown (tremendously!), what’s in store next for Healing Hearts (lots!), and how you can help (see below!). Rabbi Klein, Can you please give us a short synopsis of what Healing Hearts does? Our tagline, “medical support me’Halev (from the heart)” accurately and succinctly sums up everything we do. We are a chessed organization geared toward providing any and all assistance that someone may need when they are going through a medical challenge. We support our community along every step of their medical journey, from the time they begin experiencing any concerns until a complete resolution. This includes a dedicated referral department for doctor and facility referrals as well as patient advocacy and guidance; kosher rooms in many of the local hospitals; Chessed Homes near hospitals; hospital visitation; family support and respite; and posthospital guidance. Who is on the Healing Hearts team, aside from you and your wife? My wife and I founded Healing Hearts 20 years ago, never imagining how much our dream would grow. We now have a fullP 1 6 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

with food preparation and maintenance of our Chessed Homes. And of course–our team is not complete without our many amazing volunteers!

time director of operations, Zalman, who oversees every aspect of Healing Hearts to ensure that we are functioning as a welloiled machine. Our powerhouse medical referrals department, comprised of Chavie, Jennie, and Nechie, ensures that anyone in South Florida, from West Palm Beach down to South Beach (and beyond!), has a friend and advocate in their corner. Mushky, our administrative assistant, keeps everything organized on the back end. Dovid is our mashgiach and also handles food deliveries. Our newest hiree, Tziporah, rounds out our team as our volunteer coordinator. We also have a kitchen and cleaning crew who assist

Has the war in Eretz Yisroel had any direct impact on the day-to-day activities of Healing Hearts? The war has impacted everyone around the world, in different ways. And South Florida has seen its own share of trickle-down effects. We have seen a recent influx of Israelis coming to South Florida, some of whom came to stay with family or friends here, but many who came on their own, with no relatives or support system. Refugees come with all types of needs, including medical needs. Some were dealing with an illness prior to October 7; some come here and experience a new medical crisis. And all refugees can benefit from primary care and wellness checks. In response, we formed a Medical Taskforce for Displaced Israelis, which includes a specialized list of resources available for Israelis either with or without health insurance. We always have a translator available if needed. We have also opened our Chessed Homes to displaced Israeli families. Your Chessed Homes have been helping refugee Israeli families? Wow! Can you tell me a little more about that? A family from a small town in Israel was getting rockets landing near their house. They had an incredibly significant challenge, because they have a handicapped child who uses an electric wheelchair. The

COMMUNITY NEWS bomb shelter in their building is in the basement–and they live on the fourth floor. There is no generator. Several times they lost electricity, and the family needed to carry the child in the wheelchair–a heavy, three- or four-hundred pound chair–down several flights of stairs to the bunker. It just wasn’t safe to be there. They reached out to Healing Hearts that a family friend was sponsoring tickets for them to come to Florida, and wanted to know if we had a place for them to stay. Of course, we immediately reserved one of our Chessed Homes for them. The family landed and stayed with us for 4 weeks, until it was safe to go back home. This was just an amazing feeling, an amazing mitzvah, that we were able to help this family whom we’d never even met before, in their time of need! Are there any other unique challenges that Healing Hearts is experiencing, directly or indirectly, because of the war? With the war front and center on everyone’s minds, sometimes it is easy to forget that there are still people going through their daily lives and experiencing “everyday” struggles. Unfortunately, illnesses like strokes and cancer don’t stop for war. People still fall and break bones. Israel is at war, our hearts are broken, and yet life goes on. Therefore our work goes on, and we are and will always be here to help whenever our community needs us. Right after the war broke out, we wanted to answer the call of helping with the war effort. We are all on the front lines, fighting the spiritual effort of the war. We donated several pairs of tefillin to people in Israel. We placed special packages of electric candles in each of the hospital kosher rooms with special labels to “light for Israel” on erev Shabbos, to help spread some light among the darkness. We also added a label to our food packages to encourage people to do a mitzvah for Israel. I think the war has awakened a stronger Jewish identity and Jewish connection for people. So people are more appreciative than ever to get a visit

make a tremendous difference.

from a Jewish person from Healing Hearts when they’re in the hospital, and to be able to go to the kosher room and see other Jews and grab a kosher snack. What are some other initiatives that Healing Hearts has launched? We recently started an exciting new volunteer opportunity for families! Families can sign up for a time slot and partake in our food packing program. It is fun for all ages, a great bonding experience, and a chance for families to demonstrate and perform chessed together. Also, although this is not new, it is worth repeating that our medical referrals team is constantly growing and expanding. We help people of all ages and deal with all types of diagnoses. Is there a particular moment or memory that you can share with us? One of the focuses of Healing Hearts is our endeavor to find out what a fellow Jew going through a medical crisis may be missing. It’s not always a doctor referral or a bed to sleep on; sometimes it can be an extremely odd or seemingly insignificant thing. But our attention to these details can change the patient’s day, and potentially their entire outcome. I recall a parent sending me a message at 10pm that their child–who had not eaten in several days due to treatment–had a craving for a peach. I drove around to several locations before I was able to find a peach at that hour. When I brought it to the patient, his mother started to cry when she saw her son’s eyes light up at the sight of the peach, and his enjoyment in eating it. These small details

What else is in store for Healing Hearts? What are some new projects that you are working on? In the near future, we are excited to roll out our plans for a state-of-the-art Healing Hearts Community Center, which will house a commercial kitchen, volunteer hall, family lounge, and office space. This building will provide the muchneeded space for us to conduct all of our food preparation, packaging, volunteer activities, family and caregiver support, and more! I’d love to get involved! What are some ways that I can help? Firstly, look out for our end-of-year fundraiser, which started December 17th and continues through the end of 2023. It’s our biggest fundraiser to date, which really speaks to how we have grown to meet the needs of our community. Next, there are several ways to participate as a volunteer. As mentioned earlier, our family packing time slots are a fun way to get the whole family involved in helping the community! In addition, we have several Whatsapp groups where we post various needs that arise, which include things like rides, meals, and deliveries. Please call 305-676-HEAL(4235) and leave a message, or visit hhflorida.com for more information about volunteering. Any thoughts that you would like to leave us with? Healing Hearts is truly here for our community. We are growing by leaps and bounds, and we invite you all to partner with us and help support our crucial work. Although it sounds trite, it is true that this is a gift that will continue giving. Healing Hearts is proud to be South Florida’s supreme medical chessed organization, and all of our supporters should feel honored to be a part of this tremendous growing organization! Healing Hearts is here for you! DECEMBER 28, 2023 / P17

Heat and Cold - The Shocking Truth By Dr. Ezra Miller

The plethora of health trends circulating on social media often seems like just another fad promoted to draw more attention. From extreme sports to ice plunges to odd diets, people are always chasing the next big thing. Surprisingly, though, heat and cold exposure seem to offer more than just the latest “body hack.” Our bodies’ ability to adapt to stressors outside our comfort zones often leads to long-term benefits; temperature, it seems, is no exception. When done properly, exposure to both heat and cold can enhance our quantity and quality of life. Practices like saunas or hot baths, ingrained in various cultures for centuries, boast numerous health and fitness perks. It’s been associated with improved mood, stress reduction, and the activation of “heat shock proteins,” essential for repairing cell structures. Additionally, heat exposure seems to mirror the physiological effects of exercise, benefiting cardiovascular health. Some studies even link frequent sauna use with a reduction in all-cause mortality. Controlled exposure to heat can also elevate growth hormone production, P 2 2 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

pivotal for muscle growth and metabolic boosts. Start with 5-20 minutes of heat exposure before bedtime to enhance sleep quality and use a gradual approach based on individual comfort levels. The recent surge in popularity for cold exposure, from polar plunges to ice baths, also has its merits. Deliberate, safe cold exposure seems to bring a range of health benefits. It amps up energy levels, sharpens focus, and fosters resilience. It triggers dopamine release, which plays a role in motivation, focus, and mood. Cold exposure is also linked to reducing inflammation, aiding recovery from physical activity, and increasing metabolism. Timing matters, however; avoiding cold exposure just before bedtime is wise, as the body tends to heat up afterward, potentially affecting sleep quality. Yet, morning cold exposure can energize and prep you for the day, aligning with the body’s temperature dynamics to promote alertness. Taking on extreme temperatures needs to be done slowly and safely. Start with moderate temperature levels

and gradually increase the intensity to gain the desired adaptations without overwhelming the body. Additionally, pregnant women and individuals under 16 should avoid excessive heat entirely. For men planning to conceive, avoid deliberate heat exposure at least 60 days before conception as excessive heat can negatively impact sperm count. By providing specific stressors for our bodies to adapt to, we can greatly improve our overall health and wellness. Temperature is no different and can provide truly amazing benefits when done appropriately. Safely and gradually increase exposure to these stressors, and you will see a tremendous, positive impact to your health, wellness, and longevity. Ezra Miller is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Personal Trainer, and IDF veteran. He is currently the owner of Empower Fitness and specializes in longevity and injury prevention. BUSINESS

The Sale That Seemed Like It Wasn’t By Shalom Markman

My calendar got pinged 100 days ago with a new meeting. I didn’t schedule it and I didn’t recognize the name of my next day’s virtual coffee date. Someone made it for themselves. I was curious. I have Calendly. This is an online calendar that allows anyone to book a zoom session together within my work calendars’ availability. I keep this link public on LinkedIn, but I usually have at least a small established connection before a meeting is initiated. Not this time. So, I took the liberty to email a ‘looking forward to our meeting’ message. It was going to be with a BOM, or business office manager. She had been tasked with the research into a new payment processor for their medical company. If you haven’t yet experienced major turbulence, our next day’s zoom meeting would be a prime example. It was so choppy that my coffee almost spilled. My prospect had to go out to their car and finish our conversation. At the end of our fifteen-minute chat, ten of which were taken up by technical difficulties, we bid goodbye. “I’m never getting this account,” I thought. I wasn’t quite sure how I could salvo this opportunity. While an email summary was sent by next day, radio silence ensued. No response for weeks. My question to the reader is, would this be considered a lost opportunity? Or maybe this should be looked at as the beginning of the process? How would you follow up, or would you? I did the following and they are now a client as of a week ago. I waited six weeks to follow up, and another month for a response. Why? Because I didn’t initiate P 3 4 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

this contact. It was my prospect. My value was recognized. In return, it led them to action. This isn’t a flat-out rule. A carpet cleaning business getting an inbound call, should approach the situation a bit differently and attempt to close on that initial call. The client is calling for a one time home clean and will likely decide on their desired company in just a few calls. However, in this scenario of a continuous service such as what I offer, combined with the office staff doing delegated research, my job is to give decision making the space it requires. There are multiple levels involved in such a decision. It usually ends with a landed recommendation on the desk of the C-level. We must understand that our value add was heard and researched. It’s now time to relax and keep a note in our CRM for following up at a later date, not being tomorrow. My email six weeks later was simple. “Hi Sara, it was wonderful briefly connecting. How much the world and our lives have changed since then. I do hope

you had a nice Yom Tov and your research on this project is coming along. I’m available to touch on any payment follow-up questions together. You are welcome to call, text, or WhatsApp me on my business line or cell. Best.” I didn’t go into detail. My previous call summery was on that same email thread. That follow up ultimately garnered a response a month later in the form of: “Hi Shalom, thanks for reaching out. Sorry it took a while for me to get back to you. My boss asked if you could reach out to him. He would like to set it up. His email is…” On our set up call, the boss asked me a question which I loved. “So how did we hear about you?” I had a one-word answer. “LinkedIn”, I enthusiastically responded. “Interesting”, responded my new client. When positioning ourselves in the public eye, our value should catch others in such a way that we are contacted and referred. In this case it was those combined, with an added internal referral up the chain of command. Nothing is quite as powerful as an internal referral. That recipe consists of a three-word winning combination: Positioning, Patience, and Pleasantry. Four if you’re reading this in turbulence. Shalom Markman started selling merchant services by door knocking in NYC. He currently lives in Norfolk VA with his family and visits Florida when he gets hungry or brings on a new client. You can find him on LinkedIn.

Ancient Wisdom for Modern Success: Life and Financial Lessons from Parshat VaYechi By Shmuel Shayowitz

thrive in varying circumstances teaches the value of resilience in personal and professional growth. Similarly, Yoseph’s forgiveness of his brothers exemplifies emotional intelligence, a critical skill for success in any endeavor. It shows the power of letting go of past grievances to focus on a more prosperous and harmonious future.

We know that our Torah is timeless and continues to guide us every day. This weeks Parsha, Parsaht VaYechi, offers an eternal treasure trove of wisdom. As we navigate the complex world of personal finance and strive for success in our life endeavors, these ancient teachings provide valuable insights that can help us succeed in all aspects of our lives. Harnessing Individual Talents Yaakov’s blessings to his sons are not just paternal parting words but strategic acknowledgments of their unique talents and potential. For example, Yehuda is praised for his leadership skills and Yoseph for his resilience – each tribe getting its own unique marching orders for how they can achieve their own personal success. Personalizing Financial Strategies The itemized blessings for each brother remind us that each person must align their personal goals and objectives. In personal finance, this translates to recognizing our individual strengths and weaknesses. For some, it might mean utilizing the help of a financial professional or working with a personal mentor. For others, it might mean focusing on investments that match their individual risk tolerance. Predetermined Paths Another lesson is choosing career paths that align with our inherent abilities. So many youngsters follow a track predetermined for them by their parents or some preconceived notion that they must adhere to from their youth. There is no set course that people should follow mindlessly; instead, it must P 3 8 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

reflect unique personalities and personal aspirations. Economic Acumen Yoseph’s story of managing Egypt’s resources during years of abundance and famine is a masterclass in economic planning. His approach underscores the importance of saving during prosperous times to cushion against future downturns. This principle is vital in modern financial planning, where building an emergency fund and investing for the long term are foundational strategies for financial stability. Legacy and Wealth Transfer Yaakov’s specific instructions for his burial highlight the significance of thoughtful estate planning and the responsible transfer of wealth. It’s a reminder that managing our finances goes beyond our lifetime, impacting future generations. Effective estate planning ensures that our assets are distributed according to our wishes and that our legacy is preserved. Cultivating Resilience Yoseph’s journey from being sold into slavery to becoming Egypt’s second-incommand is a testament to resilience. His ability to adapt, learn, and ultimately

Embracing Vision Yoseph’s ability to interpret dreams and plan for the future provides a blueprint for long-term vision in achieving our goals. Whether it’s setting financial objectives or career aspirations, having a clear vision and a plan to achieve it is crucial. Yosef not only had the foresight, but he took action to execute his dreams and bring them into reality. By applying these timeless teachings, we can develop a more thoughtful approach to our financial planning and a more resilient, emotionally intelligent mindset for personal growth and success. Kosher Recipes Made Easy By Jamie Geller

ENCHILADA CROCKPOT CHICKEN This is a REALLY tasty dish to serve on Shabbos day as the main dish (move over cholent). • 20 HOURS COOK TIME • 5 MIN PREP TIME • 8 SERVINGS INGREDIENTS • 1 whole Whole chicken, cut into pieces can use as much chicken as can fit into the pot • 1 onion, diced • 1 green pepper, chopped • 1 can stewed tomatoes (14.5 oz) Is have used Italian Style and Mexican but others should work too • 1 can chilli beans in chilli sauce (15.5 oz) • 1/2 cup enchilada sauce Have used Ortega (bottle) or Target brand (can) with kosher certification PREPARATION Place ingredients in crockpot and leave on low for about 20 hours (we use this on Shabbos). For weekdays putting it on all day should work too (but the Shabbos version is the best). The result will have a lot of liquid so don’t be concerned about burning. No need to add any water. Jamie Geller is the Chief Media and Marketing Officer at Aish. She is also a best selling cookbook author, celebrity chef, television producer, and businesswoman. She’s author of eight cookbooks and the founder of Kosher Media Network. P4 2 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M
