Hachnosos Sefer Torah at Yeshiva of Miami

Rabbi Dovid Wechsler - Yeshiva of Miami (YoM) Rosh Mesivta/Head of School, Netanel Corcos - YoM Talmid, Rabbi Shragi Leizerson - YoM 11th Grade Rebbe, Rabbi Avrohom Rakow - YoM 12th Grade Rebbe (Photos by Mendystudio.com)

Entering the Yeshiva (Photos by Mendystudio.com)

(Courtesy of Yeshiva of Miami) Although the sky was gray and the threat of rain loomed large, 4 Shevat/Sunday, January 14th was actually a bright day in North Miami Beach, Florida as nearly five hundred people joined Yeshiva of Miami in welcoming a beautiful new Sefer Torah. Graciously sponsored by Rabbi and Mrs. Melech and Rochel Josephson and family (Lakewood) l’iluy nishmas their beloved son and brother, HaBachur Yosef Tzvi z”l ben Melech ylch”t, it was a most meaningful event for the entire community. The celebration began at noon with k’sivos oisiyos and the completion of the Torah at the home of Rabbi and Mrs. Dovid and D’vorah Wechsler. At 2:30 PM, music was heard in the street as the Torah was brought out of the house to begin the procession to the Yeshiva. Accompanied by leibidig dancing and singing, the Torah and chuppah were escorted to the Yeshiva’s Bais Medrash, where the dancing and singing continued. There was a little rain along the way, but it didn’t deter the ruach in any way.

It was truly a sight to behold – Rabbeim, talmidim, friends of the Yeshiva and of course, so many kinderlach, participating in this beautiful simcha together. Following Mincha, the family and invited guests proceeded to Congregation Shaaray Tefilah for a delicious seudah prepared by Tastings/Mrs. Cindy Itzkowitz, a former YoM parent and a dear friend of the Yeshiva. Rabbi Josephson addressed those assembled, sharing that Yosef Tzvi was an incredibly sweet young man, beloved to all who knew him. His middos were sterling and he always conducted himself with genuine mentchlichkeit. Additionally, Yosef Tzvi was passionate about achieving the goals he set for himself. Rabbi Josephson stressed that this in particular was a wonderful and important middah to emulate. Rabbi Wechsler (Rosh Mesivta/Head of School) followed Rabbi Josephson, stating that his relationship with the family began many years ago and that he had the opportunity to get to know the niftar, and to see his exemplary middos firsthand.

Indeed, it is his history with Yosef Tzvi and the Josephson family that has inspired and driven Rabbi Wechsler to create and sustain this special Mosad, Yeshiva of Miami. He went on to say that the Josephson family, through this incredible gift, has provided a tremendous chizuk to the Yeshiva, thereby encouraging the development of the Yeshiva’s mission to provide an environment that allows its talmidim to grow and develop as b’nei Torah at a pace and in a way that is sustainable for them. The leadership and staff are dedicated to providing the best possible Yeshiva experience for its talmidim. Rabbi Wechsler added emphatically that “Because Every Boy Deserves to Love Yeshiva” isn’t just a line that sounds great and looks impressive on paper; it is the Yeshiva’s raison de etre. He thanked everyone for joining the Yeshiva on this special day, and added that iy”H the Sefer Torah will be a zechus for the neshama of Yosef Tzvi z”l ben Melech yblch”t.

Credit Card Cash Offers – Bonus or Bogus? By Shmuel Shayowitz

Over the past few weeks, there has been a barrage of credit card promotions promising lucrative cashback offers for those who sign up for the new card and spend a certain amount of money. These offers are circulating throughout New York, New Jersey, and other frum areas who have even seen them on car windshields and as mailbox stuffers. The highly aggressive broadcasting of these offers has worried many, so much so that certain not-for-profit organizations have begun putting out anti-ads warning customers of the dangers of using credit cards. I have received several calls and messages asking for my opinion; I asked some of these callers how they thought I would reply, and they were surprised. In the competitive world of credit cards, offers like receiving $950 cash back for spending $6000 in the first few months are increasingly popular. These cards can be highly beneficial, offering substantial returns while encouraging large, rapid purchases. These bonuses come with risks that need careful consideration to avoid financial pitfalls. The immediate reward of such cards is their most significant appeal. For example, a 16% return on spending is considerably higher than typical credit card rewards. They are particularly advantageous for those planning substantial expenditures, such as home improvements or high-cost electronics. The cashback provides a timely boost to your cash flow, which can help pay down the card balance or fund other necessary expenses. Additionally, many of these cards offer extra benefits like extended warranties, purchase protection, or travel rewards, adding to their overall value. Despite these benefits, there are significant risks. The primary danger is the P. 2 4 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

encouragement of overspending. The need to spend a considerable amount in a short period can push consumers beyond their budgetary constraints. Furthermore, these cards often come with high interest rates and fees. When the balance is not paid off promptly, the interest accrued can quickly negate the benefits of the cashback. Moreover, the lure of high rewards can lead to accumulating significant debt, especially if there is no clear repayment plan or if the cardholder already has balances on other credit cards. The impact on credit scores is another critical consideration. High utilization of credit limits, especially if not paid down quickly, can adversely affect credit scores. Additionally, applying for multiple credit cards to chase high cashback offers can lead to hard inquiries on your credit report, potentially reducing your credit score. With banks continually monitoring customer scores, they have the right to automatically increase credit card interest rates just because of the change in credit. To maximize the benefits and minimize the risks of these credit card offers,

consumers should adopt a strategic approach. This includes ensuring that the required spending to earn the cash back aligns with one’s budget and planned expenses. It’s crucial to avoid interest charges by paying off the balance before the due date. Understanding the card’s terms, including any limitations on the cashback offer, interest rates, and annual fees, is essential. Monitoring the impact of new credit applications on one’s credit score is vital. While credit cards offering high cashback rewards for significant spending in the initial months can be highly beneficial, they demand disciplined financial management. By considering one’s spending habits and financial situation carefully, these cards can be a valuable part of a consumer’s financial toolkit, provided they don’t lead to a debt trap. Each situation must be evaluated on a personal and individualized level, preferably with the help of a financial expert.

BUSINESS

A Wealthy Secret By Shalom Markman

I received the following voice note today that really struck a chord. “Hi Shalom, it’s Abe. Thank you for allowing me to talk with you recently about your industry and possibly taking me under your wing as I started as a new sales agent. I had an opportunity in the meantime to become a partner in a start up and won’t be pursuing sales with your company. We’d like for you to service us, instead of our current provider, Sqaure. Give me a call at your convenience to discuss this more in depth.” The backstory of this message is that Abe interviewed in our company to be a sales agent. He was in furniture sales for many years prior and had moved to a new state with his family due to his wife getting a promotion. This required him to look for a new opportunity. He met with our company and was given my contact as someone who would happily to give the time, he required to further learn the payment industry. This had all taken place months ago and I had actually almost forgotten this incident. Abe didn’t, however. Fast forward to this morning. Abe was eager to reciprocate my generosity to the point of bringing me his business. Why? I had his trust. Now that he was in a leadership role, he thought of the one person he knew in the payment space he felt trustworthy. As of this afternoon, we even got the process rolling. When Abe first reached out for guidance, P. 2 6 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

I had to push an initial thought out of the way. Here he was, this new potential sales agent, who was going to be added competition for me. In doing so, he would have encroached on my territory as there are no territorial boundaries in our sales department. Instead, it’s the “each agent for himself”, motto. The more crowded a sales department is, the seemingly less opportunities there are for all other agents. I however, immediately pushed that thought away. “Who am I to play God?” “Who am I to make predictions on who’s going to be helpful or harmful?” “There is no one who can affect me if it’s not the will of the One above.” So, would helping someone really lead to a lack of personal success? Wouldn’t that be a warped way of going about my day and personal interactions? On the contrary, helping someone else, will absolutely lead to more opportunities. When we give, isn’t it really us who’s the one receiving? King Solomon in Mishlei (Proverbs) 11.25 writes that “a generous person will become rich.” King Solomon doesn’t say that “a generous person that gives only to those that are not his potential competitors will become rich.” Nor does King Solomon say that “a generous person who gives only when it’s in his or her best interest will become rich.” King Solomon doesn’t even say that “to keep your wealthy status, you should be generous.” Rather, King Solomon

is sharing the recipe to becoming successful in the first place. Focus on the other first, before focusing on ourselves. Leave out those calculations in what we naturally think it takes to see success. As a matter of fact, do the opposite, writes King Solomon. “Give of your own assets, and that will help multiply your own.” Giving to someone else, not only in the form of money, but in time, advice, knowledge, or encouragement, is the real recipe for wealth. I wasn’t surprised then; with the message I had received from Abe. He trusted me. I had been someone willing to help my potential competitor. He saw someone generous. Abe therefore felt comfortable approaching me once again, but this time, for my business. Our friends, colleagues and daily interactions, all have long term memory. Our first encounter can last a lifetime. Let it be a positive one. Whether it’s our friendly demeanor or our willingness to be of value. It might even contradict our very own perception of reality. But, if done putting the other first, we’ll often be the ones who truly benefit.

Muscle Building 101 By Dr. Ezra Miller

Improving how long we live and our overall well-being might sound complicated, but it starts with a simple goal: building muscle. As we get older, our muscles naturally decrease, which can lead to health issues and a lower quality of life. Creating a routine focused on making our muscles bigger, stronger, longer lasting, and quicker can make a big difference in our health. One key way to support a longer and healthier life is to include resistance training in our routine. This means working the same muscle group at least nine times a week, using heavy weights that feel challenging (about a 7/10 difficulty). During each workout, try doing about 10 repetitions in multiple rounds to encourage muscle growth. Doing this regularly and safely can increase overall muscle mass and contribute to our longterm health. Other than growing muscle size, we can also train our muscles to become stronger by lifting even heavier weights, aiming for a 9/10 difficulty while doing fewer repetitions (around three to five P. 3 4 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

in each set). This helps build strength without adding too much muscle mass, which is great for those who want strength without getting too bulky. On the flip side, lifting lighter weights (around a 5/10 difficulty) for at least 15 consecutive repetitions increases muscle endurance. Better endurance is crucial for everyday activities like walking longer distances or climbing stairs. Another important aspect for both athletes and older individuals is the “speed” of muscle contraction. Even in our daily lives, having quick and strong reactions is vital, especially for preventing falls. Training for muscle speed can be as easy as doing quick movements against resistance. For example, standing up rapidly can boost the speed of the leg muscles needed to catch ourselves if we stumble. Talking about building muscle, it’s crucial to consider nutrition, especially protein intake. Protein directly influences muscle mass, triggering its growth. Ideally, aim to eat one gram of protein per pound

of body weight daily. Check the protein content on food labels or online at www. nutrition.gov/topics/whats-food/proteins. Using a food scale for whole foods ensures an accurate measurement of its protein content. By giving our bodies enough protein and combining it with regular workouts, we can prevent muscle loss and even gain more muscle. Incorporating a muscle-building routine into our daily life sets us on a path to a more fulfilling and healthier life. A focused resistance training program, done safely and along with the right nutrition, helps enhance muscle mass, strength, endurance, and speed, paving the way for a longer, healthier, and more active life.
